Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a syndrome, and now it is time for you to post until the post syndrome cows come home.

Last year in March we broke every posting record we'd ever had and that total (over 15,000 posts that month) has never been bested.  This month we've had our lowest posting month since last November - go know.

I can't get it to load on my PC, but apparently Craig Bierko has started a web Talk Show where he bathes celebrity interviewees in a bathtub.  Sounds pretty far out!

DR Cillaliz - what a thoughtful and beautiful birthday gift for Paul!  Glad the show opening went well, and can't wait to see some pics!

DR dB - the Luhrmann.  Didn't know about the other one.

Beautiful pictures, DearReaderLaura DR!  :)

DR Danise - Congratulations on your new bed!   :)

Glad that DR Ginny arrived home safely.

Wow, that's a great word of the day - Obsequious!  Never in the history of words of the day has there been such a perfect choice of word, and I'm amazed by the grace and sophistication with which it was handled.

Good morning, all! I'm off to Toyland: I've got some scores to photocopy for THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER, and I'll hang out at the office for a whle.  When I get back, I need to move some furniture around to accommodate the plasterer(s) who are arriving early tomorrow morning to do some repairs.

Last night I fnally watched STARDUST, and what a lovely fantasy it is. Mark Strong, who plays the gangster-ish nightclub owner in MISS PETTIGREW, is the evil Prince Septimus, and I loved the whole madness of the brothers killing each other off to inherit the throne because it hits so close to home.  Seeing Henry Cavill in it reminded me that tonight THE TUDORS begins, but I have to see the new SENSE & SENSIBILITY on PBS, so I guess I'll catch it tomorrow on the On Demand channel.

BK's posting last night about the letter from the Nudie Musical fan makes me wonder how many of you ihave contacted people who were an influence and told them?  I've spoken to Judy Collins and the men in the Chad Mitchell Trio  about how important they were to me in shaping my thinking and listening, and a couple of years ago I tracked down a person I worked with in the summer of 1966 to thank him for his counsel and thoughts during a lousy summer of working construction.

My last post reminds me that I just got the new SONDHEIM REVIEW yesterday. I just wish occasionally it would get over its general Sondheim's-used-toilet-paper-is-manuscript attitude.  Especially when I got to the John Doyle is saving musical theatre piece.

Off to Toyland.

Oh, I'll post some later today. Right now I'm in the process of copying them all to disc for Paul's out of town friends who came from Michigan, NYC, Washington DC, Denver and Kansas City.  We're all having brunch at 11:00 AM and I decided to give them each a disc as a momento of the show

JRand, you must remember this is a show about graffiti and litter art. Many of the people there participated in wearing Paul's stencils on t-shirts, hats, jackets or scarves to surprise him.  So it isn't a high fashion thing - it was a crazy fashion thing.

He still can't believe that what today is considered vandalism and what he did just for kicks while he worked at an accounting firm in New York is being treated like it's high art.  I think he's getting the biggest kick out of that.

Now they are trying to put together a tour of homes to go to all the homes in town where he has done murals in living rooms, dining rooms, the kitchen he did as a 50's diner etc.  That could be a lot of fun.

Hmm... Well, I guess that explains why I haven't run into Mr. Bierko at Joe Allen lately. ;)  -There was one period of time where I would end waiting next to him at the bar for a table.  It happened about four times in a row... Not that I minded staring at waiting next to him.   :P

*And on a semi-related note, I haven't run into Donna Murphy at Rachel's lately either.  However, with the way they semi-revamped the menu - and the vibe - last year, I guess I can understand why.  :-\

*OH!  And it's currently listed as Bargain Book on Amazon.com - only $8.99.  So, if you're looking for less-stuffy, less-fussy version of the "Cook's Illustrated" approach to finding the "perfect recipe", I'd say it's more than well-worth the $8.99.

And one of this morning's giggles was provided by Steve Suskin.  In his latest On the Record (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/116299.html) for Playbill.com, he has this to say about the Ken Page's new recording (of his solo act):

Quote
The narrative begins to lag in the latter portion of the second act, as does the career...

;D

However, he does give the 2-CD set an overall "thumbs up".  And he also give very high praise for Susan Watson's new Jones & Schmidt CD.  -Which I'm going to have to seek out now for my own collection.

From JRand:
DR JANE - after I read a book, I put a pencil circle around Page Number 26, my birthday, that way I know I've read it.....even if it's years later when I pick it up again.

That is a clever idea.  I can’t bring myself to write in any book-it just seems wrong to me.  I’m also getting rid of all most of my mass market paperbacks & books I just don’t feel the need to keep.  Even with the tons of book shelves in this house, we are overflowing here.  First the mass market are going, and then the books I didn’t really enjoy to begin with.

As I’m clearing out I realize I will end up with empty space on the shelves.  I have now begun a pile of books I don’t need to keep that might have to go back on the shelves.

I am sitting here in front of the computer, but I am in horrible pain.  I guess my rowing on the lake has finally caught up with my back.  Wednesday I was a little sore, Thursday a little more, and by yesterday afternoon I was starting to eat the Vicodin like candy.  (That is not really true, I only took two yesterday, but I wanted more.)

This morning I had to take one in order to sit at the computer, but so far, it is barely taking the edge off of the pain.  I am supposed to be going to see my dear friend, Betzy, in her one woman show GERTRUDE STEIN X 3 this afternoon.

Good morning!

Cold and overcast here, but it's going to start warming up tomorrow. I've been so busy this morning and early afternoon that I haven't noticed the cold. I had to go downstairs for something, and it was FREEZING down there. Turned on the heat instantly.

You aren't complaining about your shoulder.  Does this mean it isn't bad, or just not worse after rowing?

I can't get it to load on my PC, but apparently Craig Bierko has started a web Talk Show where he bathes celebrity interviewees in a bathtub.  Sounds pretty far out!

It was pretty funny!  Obviously, it wasn't the whole interview...they were already in the tub when it started. ;)

Good Afternoon!

Well, I have "spree'd", and my room is now back in some semblance of order.  I also put on the OCR of The Who's Tommy for the first time in a long time.  I had forgotten just how much I loved that show - I saw it three times on Broadway - and just how many times I had listened to the OCR.  The staged overture still ranks high on my list of "theatrical thrills".

DR Jose, I have added the peanut butter cookie recipe to my on-line file & printed it out for easy reading.  Now I need to have an excuse to bake them.

Well...

Once you measure out all the ingredients, the dough comes together in well under 10 minutes.  Then since you have to freeze the balls of cookie dough, you can just choose to bake as little or as many as you choose at a time.  When I was living in Richmond, there was a time when I would keep a batch or two in the freezer since my roomie was addicted to anything with peanut butter in it.  Sometimes we'd bake just two or three of them.

With more prime time network shows rejoining the line-up each week, it's an exciting time once again for TV watchers like me. When one is in a show, evenings get swallowed up weeks at a time. Fun for sure, but if you watch a lot of TV, you have a lot of catching up to do.

I began my afternoon viewing by finishing the GREY'S ANATOMY episode I had started last night - the one where we got our first glimpse of Mark Sloan. At the end of the episode, he was headed back to NYC without Addison.

How lucky we fans of the show are that he decided to return to Seattle in Season 3.

Had a reasonable stumble through the show.  Several actors attempted to be off book for act one with predictable results.  Lots of missed blocking, but we'll clean all that up this week.  We got through it (sans the choreographed musical numbers), though, so that's good.  The theater's dramaturge and artistic director were there, very nice people both, but I found it odd that they would sit in on a rough stumble through such as this, since the cast was just worrying about where to be and what to do rather than performances.

BK's posting last night about the letter from the Nudie Musical fan makes me wonder how many of you ihave contacted people who were an influence and told them?

Just one--Van Dyke Parks. He wrote me back and was unbelievably gracious (this was about 10 years ago) and we have continued to correspond, as well as work together, and he has even visited us in Atlanta. No one else has been such an influence in my life as an example of not selling out and following your creative instincts. Next, I put in THE LAST STARFIGHTER on HD-DVD. I haven't seen this film since I reviewed it way back in 1984 for the newspaper syndicate that employed me. It was nice revisiting it, and I didn't remember a whole lot about it. Yes, the special effects are cartoonish in the extreme (one of the earliest examples of computer graphics), but it's still a lot of fun.

I had about 25 minutes before the 9 p.m. shows started, so I watched the "making of" documentary on the HD-DVD of THE LAST STARFIGHTER. Only got a little more than halfway through it, but the grown up cast and crew had nice words to say about Robert Preston, and there was some behind-the-scenes stuff filmed that they showed of him getting into make-up and playing certain scenes. How lovely to see him again.

I had decided to watch COLD CASE "live" and record JOHN ADAMS and THE TUDORS. Of course, no sooner do I get to CBS than I see BIG BROTHER is still on, so obviously a basketball game must have run late. Rats!

I waited 9 minutes and then just switched over to NBC-HD to see a LAW & ORDER repeat, the one about the poison toothpaste. It was a good episode, so I didn't mind seeing it again.

I have a question.  I'm going to have some time while I'm in NYC to see a couple shows.  I am thinking about going to see CURTAINS one more time, just because I really want to. But I'm not sure what else to go to.  I'm thinking maybe 2 shows, but it may be more.  The first two nights I'll be at the Marriott Downtown, and will probably be doing the NACDL stuff there is a possibility I may be availble to do something Friday night, but that's up in the air. So I'm thinking Sat and Sun which means 2 or three shows max.

So, I'm looking for suggestions.. I'll put it this way. If there was only one show you could see between May 1-5 what would it be?

Cilla - If you're thinking musicals, I'd suggest IN THE HEIGHTS, among the new musicals.  The story is a little preposterous at (rare) times, but what an exciting show.

If you want something Greenwich Villagey and funky, and if you don't mind a show being a real downer as long as it's brilliant, I'd suggest off-Broadway's ADDING MACHINE.  Discounts are sure to be had, but I thought it was a slit-your-wrists dramatic musical gem.  And it features the excellent Joe Farrell, whom some may remember from TRADING SPACES FAMILY.

Thanks for the suggestion. There is a big Gala the Friday I'm at the meeting and I just refuse to pay $275 for dinner, so unless someone bought a table, has an extra seat and offers it to me, I may have Friday night free and being downtown, the Village would be fun.

I really don't know how much I'm going to hang out at the meeting. I will go to the CLE sessions that I need to go to, but other that that??? I went to NACDL meetings 3-4 times a year for almost 10 years, so I have a lot of friends there. After getting off the board of directors, I haven't gone to a meeting in 2 years. Things change rapidly in an organization like that and sometimes if you're not around you're really out of the loop. I have no idea how it's going to go down.  So I'm either going to have a great time with my friends there and want to stay or I'll be ready to go to a show by Friday night and will be looking for HHW friends who may want to play.  That Saturday and Sunday night I'll be at the Edison Hotel.

My friend Pam, from here, will be sharing a room with me at the Downtown Marriott. She goes to see a friend of hers from college and we just share hotel expenses. She's got tickets to a Central Park birding walking tour on Saturday AM and has invited me along. Has anyone taken that tour?

Well, RENT is still playing, isn't it?

Actually, Yes it is. It will be playing through the summer now.  I've seen it 5-6 times. The first time was the very first stop on the very first tour. Then I saw it a couple months later on Broadway with most of the original cast.  It's really sort of been downhill from there as far as the productions I've seen (different tours) and after the last one I decided I really don't ever need to see it again.  I did go to the movie with DR Samantha when it first opened and we both loved it.

The field trip to Zombie Prom was a success. For the most part the kids enjoyed the show and the experience- there was some disappointment that I would not buy them unlimited snacks at intermission. A few were very into the show and later said that they had never been to a live show before, so I'm glad I went to the trouble of organizing.

We had a very good show this afternoon and a very good audience.  We found out officially that we will NOT be having a Wednesday night performance.  We were told to plan on a Thursday show, but they might contact everyone if it's not to be.

Did ya know that there's a musical based on this movie??  It's pretty good, too.

;)

Well, I am going to bed.  We have three days off from the show and I want to enjoy them...and one of the cast members is having a Brisket-O-Rama at her house tomorrow night, and it starts earlier than when I normally leave work, so I want to get to work early.

Good night, all. :)

I had decided to watch COLD CASE "live" and record JOHN ADAMS and THE TUDORS. Of course, no sooner do I get to CBS than I see BIG BROTHER is still on, so obviously a basketball game must have run late. Rats!
I hope you still recorded it - one of their better episodes.

The show had a guest spot by Shoshannah Stern, the deaf actress who played Bonnie in Jericho.
