Well, you've read the notes, the notes were foolishly foolish, and now it is time for you to post until the foolish cows come home.

-
Are any of you Fools?
-
Will we never get to page two?
-
I gotta tell you.
-
Good morning, Cilla.
-
I'm trying to get sleepy enough to actually fall asleep. Right now it isn't working. Maybe it's the ice tea that the waitress kept refilling at dinner
-
Good morning BK
-
If you could see one show on Broadway right now what would it be?
-
Why aren't these guests sleeping?
-
I think I better try to sleep. I have to get up in less than 4 hours and have a lot of work to do tomorrow.
-
Happy birthday to anyone having a birthday
-
I would see South Pacific, I think - or Gypsy - or both.
-
I'm a fool.
-
What kind of fool am I?
-
A fool for the city.

Hi, singingnymph. :)

I don't feel like an April Fool today.
Years ago, an April 1st we used to leave "While You Were Out" messages on colleague's desks, saying that "Mr. Wolf" had called. The call back number was the phone number for the local zoo. At the time, we thought it was hilarious. But we were much younger then. :-\
-
Yes it is Tuesday, April 1, 2008.
Happy Birthday to DR ANN.
Work today oh well.
-
Best of feel better vibes to DR TCB.
DR JMK sorry to hear about your coffeemaker. I don't drink coffee myself, but since there are two of them here, and LOTS of company coming in and out, we have an emergency coffeemaker on a high shelf in the pantry.
-
DRtd thanks for the Monster Bash link.
TOD:
To Kill a Mockingbird, of course
AND:
True Grit
The Carpetbaggers
Far From Heaven
The Ten Commandments
Walk on the Wild Side
AND:
Robot Monster and Cat Women of the Moon (on one of which he is listed as Elmer Bernstien).
-
Off to work.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up.... And I would have posted earlier, but... "Too Many Connections". :-\
-
-Although, looking at the time stamp on DR JRand's latest post, it seems that that TMC issue only lasted a few minutes. ???
-
Good Morning, DR Ben.
-
Good Morning, DR TCB. -Wishing you a better day than yesterday. :)
-
Good Morning Jose, just us.
-
Hugs and vibes to our dear TCB
-
And Happy Birthday to Vintek
-
Now I must get back to Robert Wood Johnson
-
Good morning one and all!
I have several Elmer Bernstein scores which I am quite fond of:
TO KILL A MOCKINBIRD
HAWAII
THOROGHLY MODERN MILLIE
FAR FROM HEAVEN
are at the top of my list.

Good morning, all! I slept late. After watching MEDIUM, I watched THE TUDORS on Showtime on Demand. I've also been rereading Denis Quilley's autobiography, and it's most enjoyable. He was a lovely gentleman, and I'm happy that I got to know him slightly before his death in 2003. His chapters on working with the National Theatre of Great Britain and Olivier are wonderful, and Olivier's firing of Anthony Hopkins for being a Macbeth too fond of alcohol before performance is a hoot. His chapter on how much he enjoyed living in Australia and starring with June Bronhill in ROBERT & ELIZABETH begins enthusiastically and ends quite sadly with the death of his newly-born son. The chapter about closing the Broadway company of IRMA LA DOUCE and touring the USA with it for a year are also wonderful.
The plasterers were a friendly older gentleman as overseer and a younger, rather pudgy Mexican, who did an absolutley gorgeous job, repairing my radiator and sealing it to the wall, repairing the wall, and redoing the ceiling of my bathroom. Last year, after the water in the building was turned off for boiler repair, when the water was turned back on, every toilet in the building reacted violently by flushing over and over until the tenant fiddled with the handle. The neighbor above me wasn't around all day, and his toilet overflowed, sending water crashing through my bathroom ceiling. I was not amused to return to find several inches of water on my floor and a huge crack in my ceiling. Now it's repaired/
Today, I have sme orchestra parts to lay out on paper, count the pages and send off an invoice. I've also been asked to write a piano part for a Mario Frangoulis chart. Hoepfully, I'll get a chance to watch Sunday's episode of JOHN ADAMS.
-
Well, it's time for me to head down to Ripley-Grier once again for another round of auditions. -Sort of funny thing: To enter the building - at least to get to the elevators, you have to "check-in" at the desk. You stand on the line, say your name and what floor and/or business you're going to while the guy at the desk takes a digital pic of you. (This is a common procedure in many of the buildings here in NYC that have a lot of "visitors".) Well... Due to the amount of work I've had lately - and most of it being at R-G - I'm at the point where the morning desk guy just waves me in. -I don't even see the little green light go on on the small digi-cam that's mounted on the podium. ;)
So, in any case...
Laters...

Most of this is from tightened security after 9/11; I can remember when I could come and go without being stopped in the Equity building, and the same was true pf the Sixth Avenue building the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization. Now you can't get in without giving blood and three proofs of family going back to the 19th Century.

I love this show. And this particular 2 parter mesmerized me. I especially loved little bridget having the visions of a white haired man. And the story with cynthia and her dead daughter was quite interesting.

I had not been expecting cynthia to be killed. But i must say i was sort of startled by the ending. Even though MEDIUM has done similar things before. I am not sure if this is the end of that character. Or if we will see any type of trial. It was a little weird of her to call allison to the scene! I'm not sure the ending really satisfied me though. I think it would have been possible for allison to get the goods on the girl. She almost always does!

DR Jose, re: your suggestions re: egg whites (for my orange julep/julius recipe)
You wrote
Dr Jennifer - If "egg safety" is not a concern in your area, then using "regular" egg whites is fine.
Egg safety is not a concern i don't think. But the idea sort of grosses me out. Although i was wondering if it was safe to use raw eggs.
However, pasteurized eggs (still in the shell) are now available in the supermarkets - although at a premium price. Egg substitutes are primarily made from egg whites - with color added to give that egg-yolky color.
I don't know pasteurized eggs still in shell. And i don't know egg substitute. Would that just be in the egg department? What do egg substitutes come in?
You could also used reconstituted powdered egg whites. In fact, I've seen "imitation" Orange Julius/Julep recipes that call for adding powdered egg whites directly to the orange juice before blending.
Gee i must an egg-noramous :) I don't know powdered egg whites either. I would consider using this. Although again i would not know where to look for them in the store.
Note that the egg whites just contribute to the texture/viscosity of the finished product, they do not - and should not - add any flavor. -Oh, and they also up the protein content of the drink.
Yes the orange julep i know and love has a certain texture. And i'm pretty sure the egg white will make it like i remember! Although i'm wondering now if the powdered stuff would give it that same frothy texture.
Thank you.

Tonight on tv for me:
IDOL, BIG BROTHER, DWTS results show and BEAUTY AND THE GEEK. Woah, reality heavy!
I am worried for marissa on DANCING WITH THE STARS. I think she will be in danger. And i really don't want her to leave. I know the judges scores don't make that much difference. But if marissa has similar amounts of fan votes as cristian/cheryl and priscilla presley and marlee matlin. Well they all got higher scores (especially the first two who i think are the least popular ones). :(
-
Tuesday morning greetings! Back to real life today, the first of a Tuesday-Saturday work week for me.
-
DR Cilla asked if we could see one show (musical?) on broadway what would it be.
I think for me it would be either:
GYPSY
SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE
or
A CATERED AFFAIR
Btw, I was checking out the off broadway musicals and saw that there was one called PINKALICIOUS. My 2 year old niece has this book and i have read it. HAs anyone seen this? I wonder if there is/will be any type of recording. She loves cds and she loves this book and pink cupcakes!
(it's the story of a girl who eats a lot of pink cupcakes and turns pink).

Good morning!
Only cloudy, rainy day here, though the right has been light. We need all we can get (we're still running 2 inches below normal for this year and we were 14 inches below normal last year). Whatever rain we get can only ease the drought situation we've been in for quite a while.
-
TOD:
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD without question; one of the all-time great scores. Just hearing the music can make me tear up immediately, a sure sign that music has affected me deeply.
I also think THE TEN COMMANDMENTS is very impressive.
-
TV Reminder:
CSI: MIAMI (conclusion of a two-parter that began last night)
a Barbara Walters special on living to be 150
lots of reality (IDOL, HELL'S KITCHEN, BIGGEST LOSER, BIG BROTHER, DANCING/STARS)
-
So sad to read this morning about the death of director Jules Dassin whose American films I've just gotten to know deeply during the past year.
What a great talent, shamelessly treated by his country and the film industry blacklist.
Was Robert De Niro's character in GUILTY BY SUSPICION based on Jules Dassin?
-
Page Three Scarecrow, Dorothy, Lion, and Tin Man Dance!!!
-
I have two TV shows to catch up with this afternoon: last night's CSI: MIAMI and OLD CHRISTINE. As for the remainder of the afternoon, I have PAL JOEY that I started last night to finish up with, and then I'll probably rewatch something from one of the season box sets. Or I may open the first season of PSYCH which has been sitting here for awhile.
-
TOD:
HOLLYWOOD AND THE STARS
-
Hello, everyone.
I, too, was saddened to hear about Jules Dassin. I admire his work.
-
Where did March go? I cannot wrap my head around the fact that it's already April! My goodness, how time flies!
-
The internet is kind of quiet this morning, so I'm going to head on down to get the rest of the day going. Washing sheets and towels today in addition to preparing lunch. The living room was cleaned this morning, so that chore is done.
WBBL.

TOD:
HOLLYWOOD AND THE STARS
Mike, you've probably answered this before, but please humor my failing memory:
Do you have the Bernstein (by Bernstein with the RPO Pops Orchestra) recording on which he conducted the beautiful main theme to "Hollywood and the Stars"?
-
I'm alive and back at work.
What a four-day weekend.
I'm tired, tired, tired.
But I got it all (mostly) done.
I've actually got room to walk around without sidestepping something in a pile, or something I couldn't decide whether to store or keep or give away. It's amazing. Now if only I could get caught up watching my DVDs and listening to my CDs.
-
TOD: I'm in agreement with MBarnum about "Hollywood and the Stars", but I'm extremely fond of his theme for National Geographic, his "Hawaii", his "Hallelujah Trail", his "Sons of Katie Elder" and his "To Kill A Mockingbird."
And then there is "From the Terrace" and "The Magnificent Seven". And the haunting "Summer and Smoke".
I cannot really pick a "favorite".
-
Is everyone out pulling April Fool's pranks or something?
Gosh, it's quiet!
-
Really? No one else is going to post this morning?
-
I'm up, I'm up, and have been up for most of the evening with acute heartburn which was anything but cute.
-
For those who say they don't know from Elmer Bernstein, he had an amazing career writing some of the most memorable film scores ever written, to wit:
To Kill A Mockingbird
The Magnificent Seven
The Great Escape
Summer and Smoke
The Ten Commandments
Sweet Smell of Success
The Man With The Golden Arm
Walk On The Wild Side
The Sons Of Katie Elder
The Gypsy Moths
True Grit
The Commancheros
Heavy Metal
Airplane
Stripes
The Grifters
The World Of Henry Orient
The Carpetbaggers
My Left Foot
Love With The Proper Stranger
Birdman Of Alcatraz
and many, many others

Big news from England!!!
Press Release
Mr & Mrs Smith by Royal Appointment:
Buckingham Palace set to become the ultimate British B&B
In a move that will shock traditionalists, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II today announced that Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the British monarchy since 1837, will open its doors in October this year to paying hotel guests. Mr & Mrs Smith, the London-based boutique-hotel specialists, will handle all bookings.
An entire wing of the iconic 18th-century building, designed by architect John Nash, will be given over to what will, from this summer, be known as The Royal Windsor Palace Suites. A consortium behind this radical new concept is currently talking to renowned hotel designers - including, it is rumoured, Philippe Starck, Tom Bartlett and Terence Conran - about providing the decor for this enviable project.
'We're aware that many will be surprised by Her Majesty's decision to open up a wing of her London residence,' says Royal Press Secretary Oona Abrillo. 'But, in the light of recent events, she feels that the time is right to do so.'
'Princes William and Harry are particularly concerned about the role of royalty in the 21st-century,' says one source close to St James' Palace. 'And, what with Al Fayed's conspiracy theories, the Labour government using the issue of royal taxation to drum up votes and Prince Harry's forced withdrawal from Iraq being seen as a PR stunt by a cynical public, they are determined that the Windsors should not be seen as remote and untouchable.'
James Lohan, managing director of Mr & Mrs Smith - which has proudly added the 'By Royal Appointment' shield to its logo - is delighted to have won the contract to deal with the bookings for what will be the most upmarket B&B of them all. 'We're overjoyed to be working with Her Majesty on this project,' he says. 'Our American clients, in particular, are very excited about the prospect of a weekend in the Palace.'
Both Mr & Mrs Smith and Buckingham Palace are keeping exact details of the project under wraps for the moment, but it is believed that activities available will include corgi-walking in the Palace gardens, a day with the horse guard and cosy tea-and-Q&A sessions with the likes of Princess Anne, Freddie Windsor and Camilla Parker Bowles.

Well, we were up before 7:00 AM, had breakfast and the folks were on the road by 8:30 AM. Whew! I'm really tired today, but my house is cleaner than it's been in a long time and I have no more familial/friend obligations until April 12th. I called Paul to say hello and he said the last of his out of town guests left and he loved every minute of them being around, but he's so glad that they are all gone. We laughed that we are both mentally in exactly the same place
-
Well I'm in my dining room and just finished my lunch of left overs.
-
I am about to leave and go back to the office.
-
I made an interesting discovery in the house here - actually in the garage. I found an etching - a print on tissue paper - that is framed and is by Olive Fell. The back paper on the frame says they purchased it in Yellowstone in 1948. Turns out Olive Fell was a well known artist and a friend of Georgia O'Keefe. She did a series of bears that were used as postcards from Yellowstone. I haven't found "A Good Will Tour" (the name of mine) anywhere, but similar looking works by Olive are around $600 or more. This frame is a mess. I think I'm going to see about having it mattes and reframed. There is also a bio of Olive framed with the print. This could be a found treasure!

In just a few minutes, we will have been on page 3 for FOUR (count 'em 4) HOURS!

It would seem the American Idol 9 break into three groups:
David C., David A. and Michael J. -top three
Brooke W, Carly S. and Jason C. - middle of the pack
Kristy C., Ramiele M. and Syesha M. bottom of the pack
Tonight I’ll watch to see if Carly can break into the top three, or if Jason can avoid falling into the bottom three.
If I were betting, I'd say that the ultimate final four will be David. A, David C,, Michael J. and Carly S.

No, it's not a joke. I really don't know what it's worth. I found it a while back and just put it with some things I had stacked up. I found it again yesterday when I was cleaning and decided to google the artist

Good Afternoon!
We ended up with a surprisingly lower than normal turnout for today's open Equity Chorus Call. We only had about 73 men signed up by the time I got there a little before 10:00, and I think we just ended up with a little over 100 men total. We were done by 12:15! *The women's call is tomorrow, and we're pretty sure that we'll be in for a longer day.

That's right...you want to keep it in its original condition.

I wouldn't take it out of the frame and remat it, then.
Well the frame is falling apart and it's got cardboard as part of the backing, which can harm the print itself. Hmmm not sure what to do

Mine is similar to this, but it's not the same one. I like mine a lot better ;D

Since I had an expectedly early lunch break, I treated myself to the Chinese "point and pray" spot again for lunch. Roast Pork, Chinese Broccoli and Steamed Rice - all of that for just $5.00! I decided to grab one of the small tables in the back, and it was fascinating watching some of the "regulars" eat. At various points throughout my meal, another fresh tray of food would come out of the kitchen. I saw more than one person follow the person carrying the tray to counter, and order a serving of the latest offerings. I also realized that some of the regulars were camping out at the tables with the complimentary cups of vegetable soup/broth waiting for a fresh tray of their favorite dish to come out of the kitchen. Now that's a system!
-
Well the frame is falling apart and it's got cardboard as part of the backing, which can harm the print itself. Hmmm not sure what to do
I would also leave it as is until you can get it appraised. Changing anything could lesson the value. And if the cardboard backing has not ruined it yet, then I don't think keeping it a bit longer will harm it.
-
DR Jennifer - "Egg-Beaters" is an egg-substitute. It's made from real eggs, so I guess the whole "substitute" label is sort of a misnomer. Maybe "whole egg substitute" is a better way to put it.
Egg-Beaters - and some other companies - also sell and package containers of pasteurized egg whites. They can come in milk carton-like containers or in small screw top jars. They're usually kept near the regular eggs in the grocery store. "All Whites" is the brand I usually see on the shelf.
Powdered egg-whites are usually in the baking section. They have been in use for years for Royal Icing - sometimes it's labeled "meringue powder". "Best Whites" is the brand I usually see in the store.

They may well, but I doubt that EastEnders falls into the category of sitcoms. While there are certainly laughs in the show it's considered a "soap opera" or drama, not a Sit or Brit-com

Is there no Blu-Ray release of Sweeney?
Got my duo Samsung player yesterday and it has pluses and minuses. Haven't checked out any Blu-Ray stuff yet, but the HD-DVD stuff we watched yesterday looked really sharp. In fact, too sharp a couple of times--I had my free 'Hulk' DVD that the kids and I watched and all I can say is that Sam Elliott's mustache was doing some really weird s*** due to aliasing or ringing or some other technical glitch. It was actually kind of funny.
The one thing that kind of annoyed me is it evidently doesn't recognize full frame as my Toshiba HD-DVD player did. That was one thing I loved about the Toshiba--if the menus were enhanced but the feature was 1.33:1, it just converted automatically. We popped in a Cholly Chan last night in this new one, and while the extras, which go back and forth between the ratios, worked just fine, the feature itself simply would not display in full frame, no matter how much I futzed with settings on the tv or the player. Luckily we still have our SD DVD player, too, which I also use to record stuff with.
-
The sun is out brightly and the skies are clearing? Huh? It was supposed to rain for two more days.
-
I thought Hillary Clinton's challenge for a bowl-off was a cute April Fool's bit.

And one for Cholly

Is there no Blu-Ray release of Sweeney?

Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal have neither announced any specific releases for Blu-ray, only that they will be coming by the second half of 2008.
The PlayStation 3 does not recognize full frame either. I have to manually adjust the aspect ratios on my TV to get it to display a full frame release properly. (That's why I rarely use the PS3 to upconvert 4:3 material. The Toshiba HD-DVD and my Sony DVD player and my Panasonic player/recorder do this flawlessly.)
-
I began my afternoon viewing by watching last night's season finale of OLD CHRISTINE. It was the best episode of the season: hilarious from beginning to end as Christine inadvertently rubs herself with testosterone cream and begins being aggressive with everyone in her orbit, particularly the Meanie Moms who constantly give her grief. To see her upbraid them FINALLY was so hysterical.
-
Next, I watched last night's CSI: MIAMI. Calleigh's got a stalker, Horatio's been extradited to Brazil, and the team still manages to solve a murder.
The show's second half runs tonight.
-
Next, I watched the remainder of PAL JOEY which I had gotten about halfway through last night. It's not the stage show, of course, but it's OK entertainment.
Frank Sinatra won the Golden Globe for his performance in the film.
-
Next, having enjoyed revisiting PAL JOEY, I decided to revisit another musical from the musical shelf. So, I picked HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN. This is an old HBO DVD release, but the transfer still looks very good. I was expecting the worst, but I was pleasantly surprised.
And is that score magnificent or what! All those songs, and not a bad one in the bunch!
-
I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. No Luke or Noah, and they're not in tomorrow's previews either.
-
My thanks to Jennifer, Cillaliz, Matt H, MBarnum, and DakotaCelt for their kind wishes last night after I left for the evening.
I apologize to anyone who I forgot to thank, because believe me, the good wishes are appreciated.

Best of feel better vibes to DR TCB.
DR JMK sorry to hear about your coffeemaker. I don't drink coffee myself, but since there are two of them here, and LOTS of company coming in and out, we have an emergency coffeemaker on a high shelf in the pantry.
Thank you Jrand57.

Hugs and vibes to our dear TCB
Thanks to Ben and an additional thanks to Jose.

Now... Didn't Orange Julius's used to come out of a sort-serve type of machine? Or was that a different type of OJ product?
Must be something else. They always mix the Orange Julius's in the blender. The best place to make them was across from the Bruin Theater in Westwood. He always used more than the standard amount of the powdered mix.
-
Today, I have sme orchestra parts to lay out on paper, count the pages and send off an invoice. I've also been asked to write a piano part for a Mario Frangoulis chart. Hoepfully, I'll get a chance to watch Sunday's episode of JOHN ADAMS.
Oh, I do love the Sme Orchestra. You are a very lucky man, elmore.
-
I don't feel like an April Fool today.
Years ago, an April 1st we used to leave "While You Were Out" messages on colleague's desks, saying that "Mr. Wolf" had called. The call back number was the phone number for the local zoo. At the time, we thought it was hilarious. But we were much younger then. :-\
I did something like that to Keith one year, only had his secretary leave the message to call Mr Lyon. He tried all day to return the call & the line was busy. ;D
-
I made an interesting discovery in the house here - actually in the garage.
WOW! 8)
-
FJL, regarding the house seats. Aside from the fact these people were rude, I’m confused they didn’t pay for the tickets up front, making them responsible for missing a show.
Oh, I see they asked for their money back. I’m shocked you would be asked to undo the purchase, even if it is possible.
Are house seats created unequally, those you purchase & those which are gifted?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY VIN TEK! HAVE A GREAT DAY! [/b][/size]

Mine is similar to this, but it's not the same one. I like mine a lot better ;D
And yours is better-NICE!
-
Oh, I do love the Sme Orchestra. You are a very lucky man, elmore.
It's always good to see the MRSA hasn't affected that evil mind!
Today in the post I got the new Julie Andrews bio, and that gives me pause to wonder whatever hapened to DR Francois?
-
Perfect TOD timing; just last Fri, I watched my dvd of The GRIFTERS; Another fave Bernstein score=Far From Heaven and The Age of Innocence; Oddly enough he didn't win the Oscar for these. Nor did he win for TEN COMMANMENTS, MAGNIFICENT SEVEN or TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD; He won for THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, which has a wonderful title song, which is by Cahn/Van Heusen. At least he did win one, but what an odd choice given all the other splendid scores.
-
I certainly wish that some day I could meet either Mr. David, or Mr. Bacharach, or possibly both. I would love to be able to thank them, in person, for writing the theme from THE APRIL FOOLS. It remains one of my favorite songs of all-time.
-
Dr Elmore,I bought the Andrews bio at Borders and will begin reading tonite. By MRSA, do you mean methecillen(sp?) resistant staph aureous? or am I just too plugged into my hospital life?
-
DR Jennifer, Egg Beaters (http://www.eggbeaters.com/index.jsp)
-
I'm interested in the Andrews' biography, too, but I'll probably opt for a used copy later. I read the review in ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY (very positive) which said this stage of her story ends when she heads to Hollywood to make MARY POPPINS. Wonder how that turned out?
-
I meant to post this yesterday, so I'm guessing most who would be interested have already read it, but for those fans of THE WOMEN'S MURDER CLUB TV series, it returns to ABC for its final three episodes of the season (hopefully, these won't be the last ever) at the end of April. But it won't be coming back on Friday night. Instead, it'll be slotted in the Tuedday at 10 p.m. timeslot bumping BOSTON LEGAL to Wednesdays at 10 for three weeks, and driving MEN IN TREES into hiatus again.
-

Heading back down now to get back into viewing for the evening. I'm planning on watching the NCIS rerun tonight since from the description, it's one I haven't seen. I'll speed through IDOL at 9, flip over to see who gets eliminated on DANCING WITH THE STARS, and then at 10, I'll watch CSI: MIAMI.
WBBL.

I did go to the doctor today, he took a culture, he lanced my stomach, and he put me back on Sulfa drugs.

Is there no Blu-Ray release of Sweeney?
It looks like there was supposed to be an HD-DVD of "Sweeney Todd," but that (of course) has been cancelled. I just got back from going to Costco at my lunch time and was hoping to buy the Blue-Ray DVD of "Sweeney" and if they had had it, I would've gone right across the store and gotten a Blue-Ray DVD player...because I can...right now and only right now. :) Anyway, they didn't have it, so I bought the "Fleet Street Gift Set" that includes the 2-disc DVD and a photo book. It's a limited edition gift set of only 3000 copies. So, that's what I got.
-
That would be what I have.
DR TCB, Doctor Phil had a whole show on MRSA today. I was horrified by the stories so I hope things are going well for you and the treatments are taking affect.
-
I just bought tickets for the Carl Rosa Opera Company's production of The Mikado. Supposedly, they are using the costumes from TOPSY-TURVY. I'm going to take Greg's sis and her DH for his birthday present. Anyonme seen this production? I'm quite excited...

This exact production came to Olympia last year...or was it 2006? It was wonderful! They are also coming again on April 25 with "HMS Pinafore." I'm ushering for that, so I'll get to see it for free. :D

I don't know if the cast is the same as the videotaping they're selling, but Donald Maxwell and Gillian Knight were with the D'Oyley Carte company for years.

This is the first day in quite a while when I have been able to choose what to do. With family, meetings, deadlines, etc., I have been very busy.
-
Thanks for the link, Elmore! I couldn't find much info on the production, but couldn't imagine it not being exciting. The only G&S that has been available here is our own Atlanta company (which isn't bad.) so I've never seen a production like this. I read Greg the description form the website:
Carl Rosa Opera’s production of The Mikado, seen for the first time in 1998, was based on the original Savoy production of 1885. Gilbert’s own prompt book was the source for the direction, staging, and choreography.
It also presents a faithful reproduction of the original stage settings, using the costumes and sets seen in Mike Leigh's film. Many drawings, photographs, designs, and other research material have been unearthed for this ongoing project that has taken four years to co-ordinate.
...and he suddenly became interested, because it sounded similar to the work that our own Elmore does!
I'm glad to hear that George liked it, too! Perhaps the other productions will come here as well. (HMS P & Iolante!)
-
Yes, but is dear reader Laura reading what she should be reading? Yes or no?
-
I gotta tell you.
-
Will we never get to page seven?
-
I'm listening to four CDs worth of Bill Conti's score to North and South. One or two would have sufficed, really, as there is a LOT of repeated music - a LOT.

Mr. Rothman is here and we're just waiting to find out when Miss Patti will be at the subway station so we can be on our merry way to the Heim of Ana.

Any opinions about the Eric Idle version? I've almost bought it a few times but never followed through.

I got a nice package in the mail from Francois several weeks ago...the bio of JACQUES BERGERAC. Of course it is in French, but I can look at all of the pretty pictures!
(I keep hoping the book will be out in English someday...after all the man had quite a career in the US, what with THE HYPNOTIC EYE and all)

TCB - From the Village theatre site:
"Single tickets are available for Village Originals Workshops and Developmental Productions. All other events, including the Annual Festival of New Musicals, Mondays at Seven are for Members only."
So, single tickets will be for sale (I'm sure they'll be very reasonable) for the workshop. Just that members get in free.
It was only for the Annual Festival and Mondays at 7 that tickets were Members only.

Sorting though all my paperbacks is creating a big mess. The mass paperbacks need to be bagged & moved out of the house. Most of the others will go back on the shelves. I want to move books around and make a section for books I don't really need to keep, just am to fill in space & look good.

I just got the new issue of my alumni magazine and I was saddened to learn that my friend Bill Aue died last August. He was a good friend in college, a very good actor who didn't pursue it after he moved here. In the past 29 years I've lived in Manhattan, I probably saw him maybe four or five times. He clearly did not want to maintain old friendships but every time I saw him it was a nice visit. I ran into him last year and he looked fragile, but he was always tall and thin so I just thought it was age.
He and Dan Dietrich, a grad student in the very sexually repressed atmosphere of Donald Rosenberg's tenure for far too long as director of Miami University Theatre, dared to become a "couple" in 1968 or 1969. Dr Rosenberg was as lousy a man as he was a stage director. He still reminds me of Joseph McCarthy. He had a lovely wife who drank too much and a predilection for casting cute blondes with huge bazooms in his leading lady roles; most couldn't act, move, or chew gum and walk at the same time. He was evil, narrow-minded, bigoted, and worst of all a boring teacher.
When I got to New York, Dan had given up acting - he has a brief scene in one of Romero's Dawn/Day of the Dead movies - and he was in the Men's Chorus. I remember visiting Dan in the 1970s on one of my visits to New York and he was working with the WPA and letting some porn maker - Jack Deveau maybe? - film in his apartment for extra cash. Miami alumni Steve and Rebecca Young, married puppeteers who worked with Wayland Flowers at the Village Gate in an erotic puppet show called "Kumquats,", and I went to see a crazy midnight show at the WPA with Dan. I remember we had to wait for him to lock up the theatre and I have this memory that we went to Phoebe's - another long-gone hangout - on the Bowery.
He and his companion moved to Los Angeles around 1983, and he died of AIDS around 1985 or so. Both Dan and Bill died too young and I hope they achieved as much as they could from their lives.
And we who survive must tell the tale. They're not for the memoirs.

George, we also went to Costco today. I purchased more books to read.
Okay, here's an April Fool's Joke that happened to me...it's really funny, but it isn't a joke. It really just happend today. ;D
At Costco, when I bought the "Fleet Street gift set" for "Sweeney Todd," I also wanted a 100-pack of the "Forever" stamps, so I grabbed the cardboard thing that you're supposed to take up to the register and get the stamps there. Well, I paid for both and left, but the person at the register forgot to get me the actual stamps (and keep the cardboard thing). I didn't think about it either and I left with the cardboard thing! I came back to work and tried to open it, but there was nothing to open! It was just a piece of cardboard with the notice, "Please take this package to the register to purchase" written on it. AND the person at the door who marks off the receipt when you leave didn't question it when I left, either!
Back to Costco. ::)
;)

So... The plan for tomorrow, as it stands right now, is that my parents will be taking the 5:30AM bus from Atlantic City and getting around 8:00. I think. And I may or may not be meeting them for breakfast. Then I start my auditions at 10:00, and if things go like they did today, I may be done by 1:00 - which means that I might be able to meet them at the theatre before they going into Curtains - and I may even go see the show again too myself! -Then after they show, we'll meet for dinner before they get back on the bus to Atlantic City. After I see them off, then I'll be seeing South Pacific tomorrow night.
In other words, tomorrow is going to be a long day.

Thanks, DR Cillaliz. I'm sure I'll be fine. However, I always worry a bit about my Mom when she comes to NYC. It took me about 10 minutes today to explain where the theatre was. They know that Port Authority is at 42nd St. and 8th Ave. The Hirschfeld is at 45th and 8th. "So, how many block away is it from Port Authority?" -Just three. "So if we're at 42nd, where is 45th?".... :P

I think I'm going to try to see IN THE HEIGHTS. I don't quite know my schedule yet, so I'm not sure when I'll go. They have a different schedule, no matinee on Wednesday but 2 shows on Saturday and Sunday. That's good for me since I'll be there over the weekend

Well over the past month or so I've had about every checkup I can have. So far the only thing they can find wrong are slightly elevated cholesterol levels. So, time to change my diet. At least it's getting close to summer and fresh vege time
-
I don't know if Costcos everywhere have the same food. But the bean salad they sell here is divine!
-
Thanks to DR Jane too!
-
DR Laura, which movie did you watch?
April Fools!

You can find an amazingly well-written review of this set at DVD Talk. ;D
I cannot tell you how envious I am. Here you're getting to do these Davis classics and the class musical box coming up, and what do I have?
That college intern reality show from the BET network and today I was SO pleased to get
ANOTHER REALITY SHOW - this time from MTV: a kind of BACHELORETTE show with a single girl being courted not only by a bunch of straight guys but also by a bunch of lesbians. It seems our lucky bachelorette is bisexual! Does THAT sound like a fun show to review? Well, maybe for a straight man it would be. For me, not so much.
-
Tonight I watched BIG BROTHEr and finally the 2 part finale of PROJECT RUNWAY. I skimmed thru DANCING WITH THE STARS to see the elimimination. I still have to watch IDOL.
DR Cilla, do you have a fav yet on DWTS?
-
I began my evening by finishing HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN. Always enjoy revisiting this wonderful classic. I wish the soundtrack could have been expanded into at least a stereo mix if not a full blown 5.1 mix, just for the marvelous music.

OY!!!! You have to review "A Shot of Love (with Tila Tequila)"?!?!?!? UGH! -Why would that DVD set need a review? I seriously doubt that anyone who would buy that set would actually read a review before buying it, let alone know how to read?!?! ;D
*I only know about the show from the clips on "Chelsea Handler".

Next, I pulled DIRTY HARRY off the shelf, a movie I haven't watched in probably a decade. I had forgotten so much about it. I was astonished to see that Andy Robinson was identified as the killer very early in the film. For some reason I had it in my mind that we didn't even see his face until the stadium showdown. Wrong!
The copy of DIRTY HARRY I have must have been one of the first Warner DVDs. There was no FBI warning screen, and the movie just started without going to the menu screen first. Even in that first year, Warner was doing anamorphic transfers of many of their films (but not all; the first BONNIE AND CLYDE was full screen).
I read recently that the DIRTY HARRY series is coming out on Blu-ray later this year, so I was eager to see what kind of transfer this was. There's dirt, and there has been no elimination of reel change markers or other artifacts. Surely the new Blu-rays will be struck from a better element. Still, they did repurpose the mono tracks and made a not bad 5.1 surround track.
I got DOG DAY AFTERNOON on Blu-ray for Christmas, but I haven't watched it yet. Seeing what it looks like on Blu-ray will likely provide a clue as to what DIRTY HARRY will look like in HD if I decide to buy it.

That is PRECISELY the show that came today. It is a multi-disc set, too, so it's going to take me hours to go through it all.

Well, with the amount of commercials that MTV's packs into their programming, hopefully it won't take too many hours. :-\

Next, I watched an entertaining NCIS with a little boy being accidentally discovered as being kidnapped. A very intricate search for the father was launched and a nice surprise ending came out of the blue. Good job all around.

April Fools!
;D ;D ;D

IDOL came next. I wasn't sure what to expect with country/Dolly Parton night. In years past, country has often been a disaster. Tonight, it was the best night all around for almost everyone. The rotten singers stayed more on pitch tonight than usual, and the strong singers chose songs that really showed off what they could do. My favorites (in order)
David Archuleta
Carly Smithson
Michael Johns
David Cook
The worst:
Ramiele who REALLY needs to go.
Brooke who went first and by the end I had forgotten her performance completely (she did "Jolene")
Cristy Lee who was more on pitch tonight than she has ever been, but I found her completely detached from the audience and possessing ZERO showmanship. Of course, I said the same thing about Carrie Underwood, and look what happened to her!
-
I did flip over to see who got eliminated from DANCING WITH THE STARS. Since I didn't see the routines, I had no idea whether this person deserved to go or not.
-
And I ended my evening with the conclusion of the two part CSI: MIAMI, a preposterous episode with Deadeye Horatio mowing down a gang of Brazilian gang members with just his trusty revolver and then a frantic search for Calleigh who, as I knew she would, left clues behind so the team could trace her steps.

April Fools!
That wasn't Gregory Peck! That was Jack Lemmon!
-
Heading down to bed now.
Good night!
-
I was watching a movie directed by Gene Nelson, starring Elvis.
Elvis started singing, in a strawberry blond toupee)!, a song about "This Tender Feeling" and I nearly had a kinniption fit for the tune was that of "Shenandoah!"
Later in his film career, Elvis would sing the title tune of STAY AWAY, JOE to the tune of "Greensleeves."
-
Well... Since it looks like I'll be breakfasting with my parents in about eight hours...
Goodnight.
-
Did I mention that I got eye-tested today and will have new glasses in about a week?
-
Good choice of show, Cilla!
-
Comforting thoughts and vibes to Larry

Well, I would *love* to get all the Criterions like you do. :)
Actually, the "good stuff" lately has really been luck of the draw. What doesn't get assigned goes into a screener pool, and for some reason I keep getting there at just the right moment to pick off some of these treasures. I have to say one of the best things I have gotten recently is a 7 DVD set of a BBC art history series called "Private Life of Masterpieces." It was really exceptional.
-
And I knew more about the team members than the guys sitting next to me. :)
Yup - that's one of "The 100 Easy Ways to Lose a Man".

I don't normally enjoy marinated artichoke hearts. I found I really like the ones at Costco, even better after I get remove the excess oil. I just indulged in a plateful.
Try taking a whole grain type crisp cracker (like a Triscuit or a bit of Rye Crisp, add a dollop of sour cream and top with a marinated artichoke heart - dress with fresh cracked pepper if you'd like.

Well, Syesha did better than usual, and Ramiele has her fan club, so Brooke may on her way out.
I was really pleased to see Carly do so well.

Back from a good rehearsal. Had dinner at Mimi's Cafe - only adequate.

I've lost track how many times Francois has come and gone and I have no idea what the last thing was that drove him away. It's a shame, but, you know, he's an adult.
