I really liked A Catered Affair. It's a lovely, small, sweet show with beautiful music and some beautiful performances. It's a chamber musical with a deliberate slow pace. The songs (by John Bucchino) are complex and need more than one listen for maximum effect (IMHO). While I find the music touching and full of meaning I don't think there will be any standout numbers from the show. The number played on the radio commercial, Never Stop Saying I Love You will come closest to being the big number. It's beautifully done by Leslie Kritzer and Matt Cavanaugh. Tom Wopat's number near the end of the show is a standout (for me). He is great as a hardscrabble taxi driver just trying to get along and survive.

It's hard to say how the show will fare with critics. Friends who also saw it last night (we ran into them as we were leaving) did not like it. They thought it was boring and bland. Well, to each his own. I saw from the last row of the balcony and I will see it again (not sure when) when a friend finally settles his calendar and we can get tickets.

Good morning, all!  I'm off to Toyland, to my accountant, and to lunch with a friend I've not seen in over a year.  I've got to finish up this work I'm doing for Harvey and Tom so I can take a bit of time off to perhaps catch a movie with DR Jose tomorrow.  Along with he Brain surgery, I have to do a bit of minor work for the New York City Gay Men's Chorus.  I've been taking on all I can this month to dig myself out of the debt I acquired druing the January-February bug battle and pay my estimated taxes.

Last night I watched the LAW & ORDER repeat and then caught the repeat showing of TOP CHEF while I finished readingDenis quilley's biography.  My copy of JOHNADAMS arrived, so I think I'll begin it next, I still haven't caught this week's episode.  I did watch tHE TUDORS; I always wondered how one was boiled in oil and now I know.

That leads to the TOD.  I had a great salad recently, but I forget where.

I can't remember any memorable salads.

As for dressings, I vary the bottled dressings I use. Right now, I'm using Wishbone Deluxe French, but I've got Thousand Island and Kraft's Catalina dressing in there, too, ready to be opened. Usually when I eat out, I get Ranch dressing. Obviously, I like the creamy dressings rather than the oily dressings. (I'm sure someone will take that last statement and do something suggestive with it.)

TOD:  We tend to make our own balsamic vinaigrette with mustard most nights at home - and we do have a salad most every night.  As for the greens, we tend to go with the pre-washed, bagged mixes to save time and effort.

As far as bottled dressings go, this is delicious and contains no sugar:

Salads?

The greatest salad the world has ever known was the Cobb Salad, as invented by the old Brown Derby restaurant.

Many restaurants have tried to copy it, but none have come close.

Second place would have to be a lobster salad that I had a couple of times at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles.  It's been years since I was there, but I do remember it.

Picked up a couple of Blu-Rays yesterday to try on the new Duo player and must say on one of them at least I was quite disappointed--House of the Flying Daggers looked pretty bad, especially in the opening scenes.  I need to get my SD version out and see if it has the same distress as the HD version did.  Hellboy was marginally better, but I have to say so far I think HD-DVD has (had) better video quality.

As for the Topic of the Day...

The only thing that comes to mind right now is that Salad Kit from Costco - the one with Radicchio among the greens, and the White Balsamic Vinegar Dressing with Hazelnuts.  A pack of that was always kept in the staff kitchen at Arena Stage, and it would always be happily gobbled up by the staff, myself included.

Speaking of my mom, we had a nice dinner and then over to the theatre for the movie DESIGN FOR LIVING which she slept through, but that I and the rest of the audience very much enjoyed.

And while we were waiting for the film to begin, the screen showed a list of upcoming live shows...one is a concert of one of my favorite Punjabi Bhangra singers, Gurdus Maan...coincidently, I just got his most recent movie, in which he stars, in the mail last week! I am very excited (and surprised!)

For a taste of Gurdus Maan, just click here and see what Bhangra music is all about....just makes you want to  get up and dance...

HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS was among the first Blu-ray releases and admittedly one of the worst. Sony was using an ancient codec (MPEG-2) and old video masters to get product to the market for launch. They got so many complaints on THE FIFTH ELEMENT that they HAD to redo it. Now it looks spectacular.

Don't judge a format by a couple of lemons. I can tell you that TERMINATOR 2 and G.I. JANE don't look much improved from their sDVD counterparts either.

But you watch CHICAGO, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III, CASINO ROYALE, RATATOUILLE, or THE LAST SAMAURAI on Blu-ray, and you'll see it's easily the equal of HD-DVD.

The best salad I've ever had was called a Southwestern Chicken Salad.  It was not "chicken salad" the way most folks think of same.  It was a wonderful salad with lettuce, dressed with black beans, tangerine slices, avocado slices and chicken strips with a chipotle crust.  I've never identified the dressing, but it was neither sour nor sweet.  It was totally yummylicious.

Alack, alas, ah heck...the restaurant that served it closed about five months ago, presumably awaiting a liquor license.  The place is still closed.

Thanks (as always) for the info, Matt.  When I popped in HOTFD yesterday I about soiled myself it looked so bad.  One interesting thing about this Duo player--HD-DVD goes through the loading process once and then it's good to go.  Blu-Ray loads each element separately (i.e., studio logo, FBI warning, menu, etc.), with the loading icon in between.

DR JRand and birthday twin - I usually end up having my salads undressed now too. When possible, I order my salads with the dressing on the side, and then I use the trick of dipping my fork in the salad dressing before skewering up some greens.  I get just enough of the seasoning from the dressing, and it always looks like I never touched the small cup of dressing once I'm done.  Although, if the components of the salad are very fresh and tasty, then I'll just keep eating it sans dressing.

I'm hoping I can get another chance to see the show.  After the past couple of days of work, and after spending the afternoon with my parents, I was not as bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as I like to be when I see shows.  -Which explains my nitpickiness - I just started noticing all the small things.  It really is a beautiful production of a beautiful show.

*Oh, and a sort of funny thing: The one time I actually teared up last night was during the Overture.  It's amazing just how much sound - and Beauty - 30 musicians can make!  -31 including the Conductor.

Last night we watch the perfect movie to keep me distracted; STARGATE: THE ARC OF TRUTH.

Since Beau Bridges joined the cast, IMHO, he has not been filmed at flattering angles or given scenes which demonstrated his acting skills.  This time the angles were more flattering, or he lost weight, & he was given a good scene.

Okay, Jose....name the opera, and the aria, that begins...:

Ya vas lyublyu, lyublyu bezmerno

Extra points if you can identify the movie which has, as its main thematic movement, a note-for-note development of this aria, sans words, with no credit anywhere for its "actual" composer.

Well, the opera is the easy part of the answer for me: Tschaikovsky's "Pique Dame" ("The Queen of Spades") -Gambling actually figures into a couple of Russian operas, including Prokofiev's "The Gambler" which is about to be remounted by the Met - the set is basically one giant roulette wheel!

As for the movie.... Hmm... Let me pull my recording of the opera off the shelf to get reacquainted with it...

Big Hint:  It was a "big" production of a classic (made in the past 15 years) with one of Britain's leading actor-directors (noted for said big productions) collaborating with his "house" composer.

Most of the film's main thematic material was based upon Yeletzky's Aria.

I agreed to play one rehearsal of a local production of The Light in the Piazza.  I picked up the score last night - the MD told me he doesn't know what will be covered at the rehearsal I'm playing at - So... if I'm e/t (more than usual) the next few days, you'll know where I am... OY

(side note:  for those pianists that know the vocal selections of the show know that most of it seems impossible to navigate, however, the score is easier to read as the melody is not in the accompaniment... thank God for some small favors)

Agreed!  "The Beauty Is" is rendered unplayable in the vocal selections.  Why Adam Guettel(?) approved(?) that format for the vocal selections is beyond me.

It was interesting to me because on last night's show they actually updated us with what had really happened. Usually when it is eviction night they don't show us all the discussions beforehand.
But i felt like last night they really showed us that nat et al were planning to screw over james/josh.

I was happy to see josh go. I felt bad watching his parents. I'm sure he can be a nice and decent guy. But he just behaved so poorly so much of the time. I did not like him.  I was happy to see adam win hoh (don't especially like him). But did not want to see james win. It was interesting to see sharon blow it (she really had it but blew it big time). I'm curious if she lost on purpose or not. I'm curious to see if adam will nominate sharon/james. I'm guessing so.

I just wanted to add that i was not at all surprised with the winner. Both on the US version and on PROJECT RUNWAY CANADA they often try to choose who they think will be the next big talent. Not totally just who has the best runway show.  I think that the winner was consistently strong and he was my bet to win for a while.

I actually found myself disappointed chris did not make to fashion week as one of the final 3. I thought what he showed looked quite interesting.

Thank you for asking.

The dentist said it was an easy fix, until he realized he had permanently cemented in the crown.   Awhile back the crown fell out so he made sure that wouldn’t happen again.  ::)

So he offered to replace it for a mere $500, which will cover the lab costs.  He removed the broken piece so it is more comfortable.  I still don’t like eating on the side of the tooth.  Since I have a major nerve problem on the other side I don’t have a lot of choices.  I’m going with uncomfortable vs painful.

As I said earlier, I chose PINOCCHIO to watch when I got back in from lunch. Such a fine film, but it's one Disney classic that needs a bit of work and that hasn't been given the Platinum Edition treatment with a disc full of bonus features. The movie has some dirt specks and other debris (not much, but it's there). They repurposed the soundtrack to form a Dolby Digital 4.0 mix, but the original mono is not on the disc. That certainly needs to be added to the next release.

I think I read Disney is doing a new edition of the film for 2009. Certainly it needs a new edition, more so than SLEEPING BEAUTY which gets another special edition in the fall (along with a Blu-ray release).

Yes and no.  It was been in a few years & he also feels I should wear a night guard to protect my teeth.  I didn't want to spend the $1,200.  I am wondering about the cost of the lab-rather high.  But then I think the crown he put in for Keith was close to $3,000, which is why Keith is using a different dentist this time.

MattH, the Platinum Series PINOCCHIO is set for 2009.

Much sooner, by the way, is a Tyrone Power box set July 29th, if you haven't already heard.

Yes, I had heard, but thanks for the reminder. That seems like a long way off, but it'll be here before we know it.

I'm waiting for the tree guys to finish before taking Sherlock.  They moved their very loud truck next to my car just as I was about to leave.  The car is parked so I can get out, I just don't want to walk Sherlock past the noise if I don't have to.  They are throwing all the tree branches into a bed shredder.

Aside from trimming trees they have removed a few dead trees off of our deck.  Now the deck will need fixing to fill in the holes.  Not the best timing for us to be cracking portions of our teeth off. ;D

I hope that Bravo Cucina Italiana is not related to Cucina Cucina which we have out here.  Awful food.

Well with adam as hoh i was expecting sharon and james to be nominated. But apparently james cried and cried and adam agreed not to put him up (james agreed not to use the veto if he wins it). It is sharon and sheila. I am sort of surprised. I wonder if adam and sheila talked about it before he did it (i thought he said he would never turn on sheila). I am curious to read if adam will backdoor james, or if he is just intent to get sharon out this week.

TOD: The Ensalata Especial at The Treehouse, at the end of my street. Although it's really just a bar (it's been there for decades) it also has excellent food! (We had dinner there tonight.)

This salad has field greens, blue cheese, avacado, toasted pecans, mandarin oranges and a homemade citrus ponzu dressing. I usually add their grilled salmon. Soooo good!

Speaking of salads, I have to mention that for the last 3 days I've ordered salads for lunch (twice from Panera and once from another local restaurant.) Panera's Fuji apple chicken salad came with NO chicken either time (my client got the half salad, which did have 2 small pieces of chicken) and the other place delivered their salad without the salmon I ordered for it. So...just a bunch of field greens with a few diced tomatoes.

I was in a stressful situation trying to meet a deadline and had already missed breakfast, so this made me quite cranky! And Panera even forgot the bread. BAD PANERA!

We were almost late for class because Sherlock decided not to get in the car.  Instead he ran around playing.  I suppose he figured we already went for a hike & this excursion can't be that exciting.

A few times I pretended to drive away without him.  Each time he ran in front of the car and sat down.  Finally I sat in the back seat for awhile thinking he would come to me-nope.  I then got out of the car & told him to stay, walked up and took him by the collar.

I've never had a dog that didn't just hop in the car.  Echo used to bang herself getting in so quickly.

JRand, I will light a candle at 10PM Monday night (est) with all the other folks at Petloss.com. This has been the ritual in our house on Monday nights when someone we care about has lost an animal companion or has one that is ill. We've done this ever since our ancient cat crossed over.

The folks there are very caring and compassionate, and helped me tremendously on those nights I was so sad that I couldn't sleep.

Even though I now have a house full of cats, I still go there to offer support to others in gratitude for how they helped me through one of the saddest times in my life.

We'll think of you and your Miss Blue Moon as we light our candles, and hope that all the vibes from around the world will help to heal your heart.

I began my evening by watching KINGDOM OF HEAVEN on Blu-ray. Superb transfer and the DTS HD Master Audio 5.1 track is stunning.

Still, it's a lumbering epic. Was delighted to see Kevin McKidd and Liam Neeson in the cast (I had no idea), but neither one hangs around for an extended period of running time.

I watched not quite two hours of the three hour film. Will be finishing it tomorrow.

Boo hadn't kept any food down for a couple days, so I took her to the vet this morning. They wanted me to keep her there over night, but I said no, I would prefer that they did whatever they needed to do and I would take her home.  She got fluids and a couple shots.  I brought her home and then went to work. I have been very tired lately and pretty much hit the wall and was at my wits end. It seems everyone else was too and the morning was just insane.  I was totally stressed, exhausted and wasn't really thinking clearly.

So, at noon, I came home, curled up with Boo and slept for about 5 hours!  Boy did I need that.  I'm already sleepy again and plan to get some more sleep.

Boo is doing much better. I think it's part hairball (she won't eat the hairball medicine) and part japanese lady beetles that she thinks she needs to eat.    She had some dinner tongiht and so far so good.

At 8, I watched tonight's one hour version of MY NAME IS EARL> Pleasant rather than fall down funny. Nice to have it back with episodes, but they've stretched things out with various plot lines way too long this season. The prison stay was too long. Now they had Earl in a coma for what would normally amount to two episodes. One would have been a gracious plenty.

Boo is on my lap sleeping soundly.  I'm glad I said no to an over night. There was no reason for her to stay there when she could be home where she is comfortable and happy.

I watched the LOST pop-up rerun tonight. I've enjoyed revisiting the early season episodes as names, faces, and motives are much clearer now than when I saw the episode the first time (assisted by the pop-ups, of course).

For some reason, I didn't think they had as many pop-ups this week as in previous weeks.

ELI STONE had two cases, one involving Eli's brother Nate in a malpractice case.

Nice courtroom conclusion to the plot followed by a very beautiful and moving hospital scene. The other plot with the sparring husband and wife was rather silly with an obvious resolution.

I recorded tonight's CSI, but that'll be what I watch while I cook and eat lunch tomorrow.

I have six or seven episodes of "Eli Stone" recorded!  I can't wait for Side Show to be over (Saturday!) so that I can start watching TV regularly, again. ;)

When I woke up I hurt all over.  I have a head ache and my muscles ache.  I took a coule Aleve and plan to get some sleep.  Hopefully I'll feel better in the morning, but I'm very glad I came home and slept.

I must vent (but not rant):

When one works for a library, where intellectual freedom is paramount, that freedom must be extended to all viewpoints.  I truly believe this.  HOWEVER...I didn't make the decisions, but I just had to order this (http://www.amazon.com/Coming-Out-Homosexuality-Freedom-Women/dp/0830816534/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1207278423&sr=11-1) title and this (http://www.amazon.com/Homosexual-Agenda-Exposing-Principal-Religious/dp/0805426981/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1207278474&sr=11-1) title and <gag> this (http://www.amazon.com/Parents-Guide-Preventing-Homosexuality/dp/0830823794/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1207278535&sr=11-1) title for the library system. :P

End of vent (and personal commentary, but not a rant).

Good Evening!

I'm back from Carnegie Hall.  It was a truly wonderful recital. Both singer and pianist were in fine form.  For the second of his three encores, Dmitri Hvorostovsky came out on stage by himself, played a note on the piano, and then sang a beautiful Russian lullaby/lament.  Breathtaking!  *I'll have to check Carnegie Hall's website in the morning to see exactly what he sang.

With many shows coming back this week and next, it's a good time to be wrapping the show up!

DR JRand - Peace and Comfort To You And Miss Blue Moon

We shall rest. We shall hear the angels.
We shall see the sky in diamonds.
We shall see all the earthly evil,
All our sufferings sinking in the kindness

That will fill the whole.
And our life will be as peaceful,
as tender, as sweet as a caress.
I do believe, I do believe...
We shall rest... We shall rest...

Thanks, I'm sure it's nothing.  I've been totally stressed out lately and I think it was just time to stop and regroup.  I'm sure I'll be much more productive after a little more rest

Ick. I don't know how people live with themselves, treating it like a choice or a disease. As a society, we really should know better by now.

If there's a table or board for local fliers, maybe you can print this brochure out & stick it in with them. :)

Back from a rough run-through.  Way too much line calling and missed blocking for my taste, but it's really only the second time all the way through.  The stage manager has put a deadline of Saturday for knowing music and lyrics, and Tuesday for being completely off book, and for line calling to end soon thereafter.
