Well, you've read the notes, the notes were yours all yours, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - today is theirs all theirs.
-
And the word of the day is: LOOBY!
-
DR SingingNymph:
I had quoted and replied to your comment about the pronunciation of Hvorostovsky's last name, but when I "posted" BK had already locked things down.
My best guess: VOR-OH-STOF'-SKI. The "H" is likely silent, but they may do a quick, audible exhalation when pronouncing the "VOR...".
-
One can no longer call someone a looby and expect it to have the impact it once had.
Especially among the loobies.
-
In my DVR no longer: three episodes of "Kyle XY" that I just finished watching. :) I now have only two more episodes, then I'm finished with this season...as short as it is.
Also in my DVR to be watched either Saturday before our final show or Sunday, when I'm totally and finally Side Show-free: several episodes each of "Reaper," "Eli Stone," "The New Adventures of Old Christine," and some other shows that I can't remember right now.
:)

In my CD player at work: Loesser by Loesser: A Salute to Frank Loesser (http://www.amazon.com/Loesser-Salute-Frank/dp/B000000PEU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1207295585&sr=1-1), that I got in the mail yesterday. After that will be other CDs to be decided later.
-
In my DVD player: "Enchanted." I almost bought the Blu-Ray DVD at Costco (even though I don't have a Blu-Ray DVD player, yet ;)), but I bought the standard DVD used at a local video rental place for only $9.99. It's good enough for me.
-
I did order my very first Blu-Ray title, yesterday:
I wanted to get something very special and I think that this might be. I can't think of any feature film that is "special" enough to be my first Blu-Ray DVD purchase. My sister bought the standard DVD and on her high-def TV, it looks great. I think that this (when I get a high-def TV and a Blu-Ray DVD player ;)), will be in-freakin'-credible!!
:D
-
At least, I hope it will be in-freakin'-credible. ::)
-
Singingnymph, thanks for the link to the "Straight Brochure."

Patti Lupone "Soft and Low - Romantic songs of the 1890s"

Lovely pics last night, DearReaderLaura DR! :)
Hope you wake up this morning feeling infinitely better, DR Cillaliz!
Still thinking of DR JRand57 and sending hugs and ***COMFORT VIBES*** to him

I did watch "Life After Tomorrow" which I enjoyed - the joy and sadness.
The advice to Mrs Worthington rings true.
(I'd love to see Allison Smith back in a starring role on Broadway)
-
DR George - I was reading at Amazon regarding the books you posted about last evening. My, the culture wars continue there unabated, eh? :P Too bad these people can't channel their zeal and energy into something more positive and productive.
-
I may watch "Carry on Camping" in the next few days. I am need of culture.

Goodnight DR DrawBridge.

Goodnight, DR Tomovoz - good to see you about! :)
How does your computer operate without power? ???
Hope your power is restored quickly!

DVD is a BBC DANCE TO THE MUSIC of TIME, based on the Anthony Powell novel series; It got good reviews when it came out(mid 90's)but for some reason never showed up on my local PBS or A&E; It covers the same social set as in BRIDESHEAD, but over a longer time frame.Instead of'1920-40, It covers pre WW I up to the swinging sixties, so the Tv version has a lot more ground to cover.People pop up in one scene only to commit suicide in the very next; Still it's enjoyable, with James Purefoy(ROME) as the hero.iCar DVD had Miss McKechnie's concert, the next installment of that bargain complete Mozart.Interrupted my reading of Hist of Eng speaking people since 1910, to focus on one person, Miss Julie Andrews-A very well done book, informative and enjoyable

God morning, all! DRtomovoz, is today April Fool's Day in Oz?
I've got orchestra parts to finish up today, and perhaps I'll see a movie with DR Jose. Yesterday afternoon I had an enjoyable lunch with a friend from Canton, OH, whom I met through friends with theRodgers & Hammerstein Organization. we talked musical theatre, library archives, problems in locating musical materials, and library archive accessibility; it was a mix of erudition and complete absurdity. And a great deal of fun.
Speaking of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, everyone must be bouncing off the walls today after all the raves for SOUTH PACIFIC. Good for them! I am so happy, and I cannot wait to see it.

I have been presented with a project that must be completed in about 2 weeks. Since I'm the expert on this information all my time will be taken up by this so I won't be around much. It's like Sing's Cranberry project.
I'll pop in when I can but I'll see you all later (and maybe some on the weekend).

We'll miss you Ben!

Friday morning greetings! Another behind-the-scenes day for me, before tomorrow's Grantseeking Basics performance.

The Blu-ray of PLANET EARTH is incredible looking (though I do think some episodes show greater depth than others). The episode I always use to impress newcomers to the joys of HD is "Shallow Seas" (which is on disc 3, I believe).

Good morning!
Overcast with rain early this morning and more promised for later in the day. It IS going to warm up, however, which makes the rain more tolerable. For me, nothing is worse trudging around doing Friday errands in a cold rain.
-
TV Reminders:
new episodes of GHOST WHISPERER and NUMB3RS tonight
new CANTERBURY'S LAW (its penultimate episode, I believe)
-
Aww, Matt. You know we'd give anything for a little bit of your rain!
-
Friday Media Check:
CD - GARLAND AT THE GROVE
DVD - COLLEGE HILL INTERNS (ugh)
KINGDOM OF HEAVEN (Blu-ray) to completion
THE OMEN
DVR - last night's CSI
-
Aww, Matt. You know we'd give anything for a little bit of your rain!
And I'm not really complaining as we need it desperately, too. Since I do my errands on Friday, rain is inconvenient on Fridays, but even then, I know for the greater good we do need it.
-
Friday media check -
CD(car) - audiobook - Joyce Carol Oates' The Falls, narrated by Anna Fields. Yes, it's the same one I reported 2 weeks ago, but missed about a week of listening when in Minneapolis, away from my car.
DVD - whatever DH Richard has received from NetFlix.

So, I'm guessing that SOUTH PACIFIC is now the unqualified favorite to win the Best Revival Tony (over SUNDAY IN THE PARK and (shudder) GREASE).
Let's see:
CAROUSEL and THE KING AND I have won Best Revival Tonys.
OKLAHOMA! and THE SOUND OF MUSIC lost the Best Revival Tony.
-
I got such an early start this morning that I already mopped the kitchen floor (a detested Friday ritual), and now that I'm finished surfing the net, I'm ready to head down and get started on the rest of the day.

The two revivals REALLY in the running are South Pacific and Gypsy. Sunday will be nominated but most likely won't win. The category doesn't have to have 4 nominees and based on how the community feels about Grease I doubt it will even get a nomination.
Mr. Riedel has an interesting take on the situation. I think DR Jose linked this column on Wednesday when it was published.
Gypsy South (http://www.nypost.com/seven/04022008/entertainment/theater/gypsy_revives_tony_spat_104605.htm)
I think, and this is only my opinion, that the Tony voters will probably give the nod to South Pacific. Both Gypsy and SP got wonderful reviews but there were some quibbles about Gypsy (direction and pacing mostly) and the talk about SP runs from rapturous to glorious and everything in between. With reviews this good they may extend (until the opening they were only selling tickets through the end of June or whenever it was scheduled to end), especially if it wins the Tony.

Based on the number of that last post I could, perhaps, qualify to work at the Off-Broadway facility on the East side of Manhattan which houses Primary Stages and had Skip's work a few months ago, 59 East 59th

DR Jose, if you're free tomorrow afternoon, it would be a better time for me. We can see whatever of the three we talked about.

DR Jane, re: the show LIFE.
When I said I wondered what "special powers" the lead guy has it didn't come out like i meant.
What i meant was he seems to hear things, and things come out (at least in the first show) that don't seem quite normal. So i was just wondering what that was about.
-
I am very happy that GHOST WHISPERER has a new episode tonight.
Btw, has anyone who watches AMERICAN IDOL ever seen a show called AMERICAN IDOL extras. I have no idea what channel it airs on in the US. Here in canada i caught it on STAR when i was flipping through the channels last night.
It had the eliminated contestant. And had a segment on clay aiken and broadway.

As for the Topic of they Day...
I've finally started importing a couple of CDs into my iTunes on a semi-regularly basis, and I'm trying to balance out my "old" with my "new", so...
Tuck & Patti - "Tears of Joy"
The Who's Tommy OCR
Ben Folds Five - "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner"
"Finding Nemo: The Musical" OST (It's available on iTunes)
"High School Musical 2" OST
Billy Joel - "An Innocent Man" - After all these years, I still love this album.

It's a syndicated show, and I can't remember which channel(s) it pops up on here stateside. It is an interesting show. They cover not only the people who made the finals, but also some of the more memorable auditionees. It's actually sort of well put together, and there's no sense of condescension or mean-ness either.

And regarding the pronunciation of the Siberian baritone's last name, it's actually sort of "easy". Russian is basically an "open" language, meaning that almost all of the syllables which make up their words end in vowel sounds (much like Italian and Spanish). "Hvorostovsky" is an English transliteration of his Russian/Cyrillic, so if you break it up by the syllable, with the vowel "stops"...
Dmi -tri Hvo - ro - stov - sky - Just consider the "v" a vowel too in the third syllable. And, yes, there is a brief, almost guttural exhalation of air before the first "v".

Hmm, I think I mentioned this in my earlier post about South Pacific and Gypsy.
No surprise.

Unfortunately, again no surprise, they also raised the ticket prices. I'm glad I'm seeing it on April 15th at the lower Loge price.

Losing your touch?

If they're still selling Lincoln Center Theater memberships: It may actually be cheaper to buy an annual membership for $50 and then buy a member ticket to South Pacific for $50, than to pay the $120 ticket price.
Just an idle musing.

I would have bet money that adam would have nominated sharon and james. That is what i thought he should do. But he did not. He nominated sharon and sheila. It seems like it happened in a really odd way (i forget if i posted any of this yesterday, i think maybe just the noms?). Anyhow i believe adam was prepared to nominate james. But then james started crying. And adam agreed not to nominate him (only if he would not use the veto if he wins it).

Now the interesting part here is that adam is easily swayed. And the diary room made sure to call natalie into there so she could not talk to adam before he made the nominations. I really think that adam is an idiot. Not so much because he did not nominate james. But if james wins the veto and he takes sharon off the block (which he told adam he would not do) then adam will have to have one of his alliance members voted off. I really think this would be james' best move. But i will not be happy if this happens. IT's too bad if james goes against his word that natalie will most likely suffer. I would rather that adam be booted. Anyhow with a double eviction coming up things will change rapidly!

JRand, I'm so sorry to hear about Miss Blue Moon. My thoughts are with you.

So, today I received most of the nice e-mail I was waiting for - it was actually sent two days ago and for some reason never arrived (very unusual with gmail). It finally appears as if all is well (those who made a certain preorder a couple of weeks ago know from whence I speak), and an official announcement will be made Monday or Tuesday and a certain website will have said announcement and people will be happy and be able to order a title they might very much like to have. And that's the most current news I have.

I did not get any mail today. I was NOT a happy person.

The rains have held off, but so did the sun. It didn't get anywhere near as warm as they predicted. I had to wear a heavy jacket while running my errands, and I had to turn the heat on in the house.
-
I began my afternoon of viewing with last night's CSI. A pretty interesting case and a pretty neat surprise ending I didn't see coming. The business of several guys on the staff having the flu seemed rather pointless.
-
Next I finished KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. Long, heavy, sad. Not the feel-good movie of its year, for sure. I didn't much care for Orlando Bloom in the leading role either. He didn't quite have the presence here that he needed to carry such a mammoth epic film about the Crusades.
-
I am really looking forward to the weekend. I cleared a lot of paperwork off my desk today and will be out the door promptly at 5PM.

To get in a better mood, I watched ICE AGE-THE MELTDOWN on Blu-ray. Looked wonderful, of course, as most CGI animation does in HD. And the DTS-HD Master Audio track was another stupendous production. I thought I'd revisit another favorite film of the past, so I picked THE MIRROR CRACK'D (Angela Lansbury version).
I haven't watched this in a long time. It's my least favorite of the Agatha Christie series produced by Lord Braborne, and yet it's still a lot of fun.
-
And I ended the afternoon skimming through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Yep, the boys were on (along with Emeera and Luke's faux-boy friend).
They were not featured in the previews for next week.

(With that much botox, however, I am surprised she was able to open her mouth for the photograph.)
I think she had it surgically set to always be gaping open like that.

I was in NYC for the very first time and I was taken to Radio City Musical Hall and I saw a show and a very bad Disney film called The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band which is only remembered today as being the first film that Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell appeared in together.
The cast included Walter Brennan, Buddy Ebsen, Leslie Ann Warren, John Davidson, Janet Blair, Wa;;y Cox, Richard Deacon, & John Walmsley who went on to play Jason Walton for the rest of his life.
BTW Goldie was known as Goldie Jeanne Hawn back then

Whilst 1000's of homes are still without power in some areas of Melbourne we were only without power for a day. Most problems are in the expensive "leafy" suburbs and in the hills (near here) where fallen trees have caused many power lines to be damaged. I did not tie Magnus to a wheel driven generator to provide electricity for last night's post.

That was fun, DR Ginny - thanks for the link! :)

When one works for a library, where intellectual freedom is paramount, that freedom must be extended to all viewpoints. I truly believe this. HOWEVER...I didn't make the decisions, but I just had to order this title and this title and <gag> this title for the library system.
GAG, GAG, GAG, I’m sure. I’m sorry you had to do the ordering.

That is good, DR Tomovoz! Glad that you and DP Colin and DD Magnus are safe & sound!!

Thanks to all and sundry for the thoughts, hugs, vibes, and poems. They were very helpful this morning.
I put away her food dish and water bowl this morning, so that is that.
:'( That is so very hard. We still have Echo's last version of her favorite toy. Hanging from it (it's a duck) is her tag, and Belle's (our beloved dog prior to Echo) tag. I kept echo's spare dog leash in my car for half a year.

From the email I received today from DR TCB, it seems you are not the only one who doubts "sound" DR TrickCyclist.

How wonderful to be 70+ and not have a wrinkle on your face!
(With that much botox, however, I am surprised she was able to open her mouth for the photograph.)
With as many lip injections as she's obviously had, the greater wonder would be if she could CLOSE her mouth.

We'll miss you Ben!
Admit it, Laura, we won't miss Ben; we will miss his damn oatmeal bowl.

Great email news Bruce. Continued vibes all goes well!

It all depends on how the voters feel about GYPSY!I wonder if Gypsy might have less of a chance because of the revival only five years ago. Even though it was a completely different production, it was still the same show. :-\
I believe that is why they call them "revivals."

I put my ancient cat's rabies and id tags on my wind chime. Whenever the wind would blow and the chimes would ring, I would feel like he was saying hello.
I kept one of his fangs that had broken off, and snipped some of his fur and a whisker. When I cremated him, I sent a lot of things with him, including snippets of our hair, piano music (he played piano every morning), flowers from both yards, his favorite treat (Arby's) pictures of us and one of his favorite toys. I took a picture of him, wrapped in his blankie, tied with a huge bow and all the goodies tucked inside, since Greg wasn't able to spend the day with me getting him ready. When I showed him the picture, he said I would have been a good Egyptian. :)

In fact, just had an e-mail from the composer/lyricist responsible for the announcement we'll be making on Monday, and said composer/lyricist was thrilled with the packaging, and only had three little corrections for us to make in the printed lyrics we're including (which, ironically, came from his office - I found two typos myself that I'd already fixed). So, the packaging is now approved and done and will go off to the printers on Monday or Tuesday.
So, for those who may have been holding off on preordering, it is now safe to do so. If you have no clew as to what the HELL I'm going on about, just send me an e-mail. Once the announcement is made, and once the fan-atical fans of this composer/lyricist hear about it, I'm praying this thing will sell out quickly.

Time to start the weekend. Whoohoo! What a week!

Cilla:
Maybe he shoudl call HGTV "Sell This House"
;D I would if his loft were tacky. With all the moves throughout his life, he learned plenty how to present a home. Not that it didn't look good to begin with, he inherited his father's organizational & artistic skills.
I’m glad Boo is doing better. I’m with you, I don’t leave my pets unless it is absolutely necessary. Leaving them is often more for convenience than anything.
I hope you are also feeling better.

The flowerbed I cleaned out today is where our pets are buried -- our personal pets are around the border, and the fostered kittens that didn't survive are in the flowerbed under stepping stones (because it was the only place I could dig at the time). It is all tidy now.

If the community is thrilled with the new "Gypsy", I don't believe they'd hold the Peters version against it.
It will boil down to which show thrilled 'em, moved 'em, wowed 'em the most.

I know what you mean. And then there are the John Williams fans who swoon ecstatically over "Hook"...which is, for me, is a dismal film with one of Williams' most lugubrious efforts. I cannot bring myself to listen to it.

Actually tomorrow is going to be absolutely beautiful here, so I may work a little, but am planning to open the windows, do laundry, maybe work in the yard a litte. Sunday is going to be crummy weather, so it will be a good day to go to the office.

From Jennifer:
DR Jane, re: the show LIFE.
When I said I wondered what "special powers" the lead guy has it didn't come out like i meant.
What i meant was he seems to hear things, and things come out (at least in the first show) that don't seem quite normal. So i was just wondering what that was about.
;D I got it now.
I don't know, maybe it is his Zen thing. I have to admit, it did throw me off at first.

BTW Goldie was known as Goldie Jeanne Hawn back then
Well, how many other Musicals have a song dedicated to the Dakota Territories.

His Mom's situation resolved itself, quite sucessfully, sooner than anticipated. He seem happy to see her, but he did decide to slip his leash and go dashing down the hill to go exploring in the wet lands. He wouldn't come when she called, but Woody was able to go down and recapture him with ease. She admitted that her other dog had Wiggles cowed, so it should be interesting to see how the newly independent Wiggles makes out on his return. She said she wants to stop back and see us some time. Truth be told, we had already decided we wouild keep him ourselves if his home situation did not work out.
His last learned bad-habit was to jump on Woody's bed in the morning and give him a "time to go out" stare. :D

GOOD EVENING DRs!
Long working day at Borders today, but, not a lot of selling. . .however, we were told at this morning's meaning that since we need the sales (and points) and we were in the midst of Educators' Appreciation Week, that we should push the 25% educators' discount to everyone - i.e., if one had eve walked past a school, consider them an educator - which did indeed make for a lot of discounting going on.
I would merely nod my head while asking, "You ARE and educator, aren't you?" to get the message accross, but, subtlety doesn't always play in The Pittsburgh Mills. . .

DR Matt - Did I miss which version you were watching? Was it the extended cut or the theatrical release? I'm not high on Orlando Bloom in either version, but, I think the longer cut is a much more coherent, dramatic and enjoyable film. It's one of those epics which I do revisit when the mood strikes me for something heavy.

Have had an interesting day listening to speeches given in ND by Obama and Clinton....
Love Clinton's remark about FEMA. She alluded to the fact that Bill Clinton was involved in the flood recovery in Grand Forks, etc. She alluded to the fact that James Lee Witt know something about natural disasters... Unlike the person in power in FEMA during Katrina.
It has been interesting and both candidates make some good points...
There are some interesting snarky remarks made about Bush...

$120 top ticket? Do they just raise these prices higher every time there's a new hit? It's really ridiculous.
Well, the top ticket price for some shows is actually $125.00 - or $126.50 with the Theatre Restoration Fund added in. However, Broadway tickets prices are actually lower than some of the larger touring houses. I believe the standard top ticket price at the Kennedy Center is now $145, and there is similar pricing out in L.A. at The Pantages. *When I saw Hairspray at The Pantages four years ago, the top ticket price was already $150.

I met up with the currently errant and truant Jason earlier today for lunch and a movie. We lunched at Spring Street Cafe in SoHo, and then caught a late matinee of "Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day". What an absolutely charming movie! And what a great cast too: Frances McDormand, Amy Adams, Lee Pace, Ciaran Hinds, Shirley Henderson, Mark Strong, and Tom Payne. Lee Pace - of TV's "Pushing Daisies" is particularly adorable.

Cillaliz, I was discussing something with a friend today and we disagreed.
Do you have to have a unanimous decision in a criminal trial? All criminal trials? Or just "big" crimes?
All criminal trials need a unanimous verdict. Civil cases don't. I don't think that's been changed anywhere, but the way the consitution has been eroded.....
A hung jury is when the jury isn't unanimous. Even if it's 11-1 it isn't a decision.

And since we had had lunch in SoHo, and since we passed by the store on the way to the Subway, we stopped into Kee's Chocolates (http://keeschocolates.com/). Well, more like I stopped into Kee's Chocolates. However, I was not in the mood for any her exquisite chocolates today. Instead, I decided to try some of her macaroons. She only had four flavors left, so I got one of each: Rosewater-Lychee, Passion Fruit, Kaffir Lime and Strawberry. They were all quite good, however, with the exception of the Rosewater-Lychee one, they were actually filled with dark chocolate ganache, rather than a fruit-based cream filling.
Then since we had seen the movie at Chelsa Clearview Cinemas down on 23rd Street, I showed Jason where Madeleine Patisserie was too. ;) So... Just two from there today: Banana-Guava and Port Wine/Cassis. :)

Yes, it's the longer director's cut which is on Blu-ray. I understand that this version does make the most dramatic sense and the early added scenes add a great deal to helping an audience identify more with Bloom.

As for tonight's recital at Carnegie Hall by Joseph Kaiser and Craig Rutenberg, well...
First of all, I had thought the recital was at 8:00. I had stopped by DR elmore's to drop off "something" on my way back uptown, and was planning on heading back to the apartment to put on something less casual, and then head back on down to Carnegie Hall. While I was walking to the train, I thought, "Wouldn't it be funny if the recital was at 7:30?" Well, lo and behold, when I looked at the ticket, it said "7:30"! So, I picked up my pace to the subway station. I figured I would have just enough time to make it back uptown, run into my apartment, put on a nicer sweater, and then run back down to catch the D Train downtown. Well, as I was waiting for the C Train (the local) at 81st Street, three express trains went by. As I waited and waited, I did the math and realized there would be no way to make the trip uptown and back, so I hopped on a B train downtown. By the time I walked up to Carnegie Hall it was 7:15...

I began my evening of viewing by finishing THE MIRROR CRACK'D. Of the 4 Christie movies made betweenb 1974-1982, this was the only one where I guessed the murderer's identity before it was revealed. Nice to see it again.
-
Finished up MADAME X, which I guess in its first version was one of my grandmother's favorite movies. I know that when I was growing up she talked a lot about IMITATION OF LIFE, MADAME X and STELLA DALLAS being favorites of hers. Obviously my grandmother had a hankering for the five-hankie school of cinema. . . .
-
THE MIRROR CRACK'D is a lot of fun, even with a predictable murderer; the banter alone between Kim Novack and Liz Taylor is deliciously delirious. :D

Then I watched 7 episodes (out of 9) of COLLEGE HILL INTERNS. Just exactly what you'd expect it to be - 10 students, young 20s, vying for an intern position in a Fortune 500 company, but they have to win this competition to get the job.
The tasks they're given to do are really not particularly challenging: win some team character building competitions; organize a fund raiser for HIV Awareness, and spend a day assisting in the building of a Habitat for Humanity home. One girl broke down crying because she had to rake soil in the front yard so grass could be planted. One of the guys got so drunk partying the night before that he couldn't make it to the building competition, so he stayed in bed all day!
Naturally, there are the constant confrontations between clashing egos, some sexual heat stirred up between some of the competitors. Naturally, the producers put one lesbian into the mix of contestants to see how they'd react to that.
-
I'll finish the remaining two episodes and one more bonus feature tomorrow.
I did get two bonus features watched tonight: a compilation audition reel of interviews with the 10 chosen contestants, and a separate audition reel of some folks not chosen for the show.
-
The reason I had so much time to watch COLLEGE HILL INTERNS tonight was that we had a tornado watch tonight in our area during the 8-9 p.m. hour, and all network programming for the CBS, NBC, and ABC affiliates was preempted for 40-45 minutes with the same information repeated ad infinitum.
So, I didn't get to see tonight's GHOST WHISPERER. I was not going to try to get in on the plot with only 20 minutes of show left.
-
I did get to see CANTERBURY'S LAW. I enjoyed the episode, but the case was pretty predictable with the two "best friends" who ended up betraying one another.
-
I watched tonight's NUMB3RS, too. Lots of stakeouts tonight with a rather slow-moving case.

When I walked up to the entrance of Weill Recital Hall, I noticed a sign for an upcoming recital by mezzo-soprano, Sasha Cooke... Then as I looked at the date for that recital, I noticed it said "April 4, 2008". Tonight. -Hmm... Is she singing in another hall? That's when I noticed the pieces of paper taped to the doors. Apparently, both Joseph Kaiser and his accompanist, Craig Rutenberg, were sick, and Sasha Cook and her accompanist, Pei-Yao Wang, were recruited on very short notice to fill in for the evening.
For a few moments, I had thought about asking for a refund, but since I hadn't heard a mezzo-soprano or soprano in recital in a while, I went ahead and headed into Weill.
Her program consisted of some of my favorites: Debussy's "Chasons de Bilitis", Schumann's "Frauenliebe und -Leben", and de Falla's "Siete Canciones Populares Espagnolas", as well as a set of songs by John Harbison, "North and South".
All in all, it was a wonderful recital. I've never heard Sasha Cooke before, and I was pleasantly surprised by her very "soprano" sounding mezzo-soprano voice. Bright, clear, without that (stereo-)typical smokiness of some mezzos. Her accompanist was very good, although, I did find myself wishing for some more colorations in the Debussy and de Falla - but I also thought the piano seemed to be voiced a bit on the bright side too, so that may have been the issue. Alas, the charms and appeal of Harbison's music still seem to elude me. There were a few nice moments during "North and South", but those were during passages where I thought he was sounding like William Bolcom and Ned Rorem. ;)
For her encores, she performed Rachmaninov's "Spring Waters" - which I had just heard the night before in the larger hall, and a truly hauntingly beautiful aria from John Adam's "Doctor Atomic" - she'll be a part of the Metropolitan Opera's production next season.
*There was one interesting flub during the de Falla set. The pianist started the intro to one of the songs... -Hmm, that's not the next one in the set... Then Ms. Cooke gestured to stop and briefly chatted with her accompanist. Her pianist had accidentally turned one too many pages, and had skipped over one of the songs. Oops!

THere has not been a lot for telly viewing up here tonight iwth the local coverage of Clinton's and Obama's visits.
-
Going to write for just a bit and then will head off to bed.
Good night!
-
Back from SOUTH PACIFIC, which was magnificent. And the audience, as the first audience after the show's reviews came out, seemed thrilled to be there from the start, adding to the excitement.
-
I'm not surprised, you seemed to be enjoying him too much :) Did you tell her that, just in case?
You betcha :D

A sad loss for Canada:

• April 4: Firefighters battle a blaze at one of Quebec City's most historic buildings. Fire broke out at the Quebec City Armory, located just outside the walls of the Old City, at around 9:30 p.m., witnesses said, and caused a major explosion and flames that tore through the site. Most of the building, which was built in 1884, collapsed about two hours later, leaving only a brick wall and two towers at the main entrance standing.
