In my DVD player that I just got in the mail yesterday: a live performance of Candide with Kim Criswell as the Old Woman. It's hysterical! It's set in the 1950s/1960s with a Kennedy-like family and Lambert Wilson is Pangloss, et al. All of his spoken dialog is in French, but most of everyone else's dialog is in English and all of the lyrics are sung in English. Very strange concept, but a very good production (in my opinion). Kim Criswell is fabulous, but I think they cut her role a bit as compared to the concert version with Patti LuPone. :-\

Idol Tracker: Johns but not forgotten
This is traditionally the point in the Idol season where early favorites begin to falter. At roughly here in previous years, the Idoldome has been shocked to see Angel of Death Seacrest swoop down without warning on sensations Chris Daughtry, Mandisa and Jennifer Hudson. But the dismissal of Johns, the oldest of the remaining candidates who often seemed to be operating on another plane entirely, seems particularly cruel while perpetual denizens of the bottom three Syesha Mercado and Kristy Lee Cook linger on.
Ulitimately however, Johns dismissal proves, once again, that you can not ignore the youth vote on American Idol. The smoldering performer offered a very grown up appeal that did little to play to the ten year old set, and like Daughtry, Mandisa and Hudson before, the neglect of that critical demographic may be what ultimately cost him his place in the Idoldome.

Good morning, all! It's going to be a nice spring day in Manhattan, and I think that around noon I will walk down to Lincoln Center and play at the NYPL for a while. I have to look at the Act One draft of The Lady Of The Slipper and its lyric sheets to finalize something in my critica report. I also need to confirm on the online newspapers a tin-eared critics comment about Cinderella's Act Two waltz being a tango. Elsie Janis may have been not particularly pretty or a good singer, but I've heard her existing recordings and I know she shouted in rhythm. Here's a shot of Elsie and her mother, Mrs Bierbower who may have been a more monstrous stage mother than Madam Rose. Like the real Rose Hovick, Mrs Bierbower was a big lesbian, but so was Elsie.
DR George, my friend Bill Burden told me at Kim's engagement party that the CANDIDE was being released on commercial DVD. Is this a commercial release you've been viewing? Bill's a great guy and I've known him for several years now. I got him the role of the doctor on the John Yap MOST HAPPY FELLA. Bill's wife beautiful wife Carol was the Dory when I worked on GREENWILLOW for Utah Festival Opera. Bill and Carol met on a production of CANDIDE; she was the Cunegonde.

As for the Topic of the Day...
Well, I had actually meant to listen to a few more things this week, but I seemed to be in not much of a listening mood. -Although, I think seeing two shows this week has to count as some sort of "media". In any case, I did pull a CD off the shelf that I don't think I ever listened to after I bought it. It's the complete songs of Henri Duparc sang by the venerable bass-baritone, José van Dam. It's from the early years of the CD, so the sound, at least to my ears, is a bit too reverberant and "spatial" in some places, but van Dam's artistry comes through loud and clear. His young accompanist, Maciej Pikulski, handles Duparc's more technically difficult and Wagnerian accompaniments with great ease and musicality too.

Well, the "thorn" on the right is my buddy, Michael Minarik. We actually both grew up in Northern Virginia. It turned out that we went to competing high schools, but our paths never crossed until we were in college and I stared playing for the state and regional SETCs auditions. A couple of times, we almost worked together at Ford's Theatre in DC - only one of us ever ended up getting the gig. A few years ago, we finally got to work on the workshop of a new show. Such a great guy, and he actually made his Broadway debut in the revival of Les Miserables singing on the barricades with his girlfriend. I'm hoping to get down to Signature to see The Happy Time - hopefully, next weekend.

I was lucky to see the Goodspeed production in 1979, which had a large - for Goodspeed - orchestra of around 15 players, and a good cast except for the Robert Goulet role. It was a wonderful production that put back material that Gower Champion foolishly cut and there were three more songs, as I recall, that helped the show a lot. I told Michael Price they should have brought it in so all the little boys who couldn't be in ANNIE would have a show running in New York.

I have one of those as well, though I rarely use the DVR part of it unless the DVR in my cable box is busy with two other shows. The hard drive isn't nearly as big as the one in my cable DVR box.
When I want to burn a DVD-R from something in my cable DVR cache, I already have that hooked up, too, so it's an easy matter to record from the cable DVR box.

If they knock THAT score, then they are blasted idiots; it is one of the greatest scores ever from a flop show. I saw the original Broadway production and was transfixed by it. Grand showstoppers, Robert Goulet at the height of his matinee idol appeal, the superb Michael Rupert in an early showcase role for him. This show had everything but an audience, and I lay that at Gower Champion's feet for not letting the show exist in a smaller theater. It was not the HUGE blockbuster that DOLLY was, and it shouldn't have been made to be in (then) Broadway's largest theater.
I often wonder how long it would have run if it had played the Booth and IF all that brouhaha with the curtain being held on opening night for one late critic didn't rile the others into dumping on the show.

About Michael Johns' elimination. Although I could see him getting as far as to third place, I never felt he was one of the favorites. At this point, I could see the three guys: Castro (ugh!), Cook, and Archuleta as the final three (not based necessarily on talent but in overall popularity down through the weeks).
I will be very surprised if we don't see a succession of ladies going in the next several weeks.

I was pretty surprised. Not really with the B3. But more with who went home. I suspected Syesha would be bottom 3. And with carly's reviews and performance this week i was not surprised that she was B3 either. I guess since Kristy is now popular. And since the judges praised Jason Castro so much this week, someone else had to be in the bottom. So i was not totally shocked to see michael there. Maybe that is what the judges meant when they said they were okay with the bottom 3. Probably a lot of it was based on this week's performances only. I thought it was interesting/sort of mean that ryan said "well last year during idol gives back the person with the lowest votes did not go home (pause) ... but this year michael you're leaving!". I guess that was to add to the suspense since everyone (myself included) was wondering.

I will say that i liked the person that went home. Well actually i think he had a lot more potential than he showed. I remember that Bohemian Rhapsody during Hollywood week and it was incredible. I just wish he had done as well during the actual show.

On a happier note, the "King's Barcarolle" from the Bill Burden-Anna Christy-Kim Criswell-Lambert Wilson CANDIDE at the Paris Opera.
DR George, I'm sure of one thing about CANDIDE: Kim Criswell has to sound better in the role for a legit mezzo than the over-parted Lupone. Also, I believe this production was based on the Scottish Opera libretto and not the 1973 Broadway Theatre version.

KISMET.....I have only seen the VHS, but I like the movie. It did take me a moment to get used to Howard Keel being Ann Blyth's father, but then I was fine.
My favorite moments - well the set designer really should have talked to Tony Doucette (I think he did the costumes) - every time Sebastian Cabot comes through a door, he has to duck to get his hat through....it becomes fun to watch for! And he can walk, talk, and duck all at the same time.

I've heard. I need to get it from Netflix and watch it. She released two recordings from her 1911 show The Slim Princess and she's really a lousy singer, but neither she nor Montgomery & Stone recorded anything from The Lady Of The Slipper. Elsie's mother hung out with the Elsie de Wolfe-Bessie Marbury lesbian theatre crowd. Marbury was one of the producers with Ray Comstock of the Princess Theatre shows. Elsie was involved with Eva LeGallienne for a while, as were many other ladies.

I'm off to the post office and NYPL. I am having a bitch of a time finding anything online concerning "men in white" that makes sense to The Lady Of The Slipper. In Act Three, to punish Montgomery & Stone for leaving the ball too late with Cinderella the Fairy Godmother turns them into "men in white" (whatever the hell that means) and they end up in white makeup and white satin clothes to perform a Harlequinade involving slapstick, cops, a cat, Harlequin and Columbine.
I can find plenty on the pantomime Harlequinade, and I even have a book KING PANTO about it all, but was "men in white" a pantomime term? a common expression beyond reference to the Ku Klux Klan or specialists in insanity (men in white coats)?
Off to NYPL to ponder all of this.

Re: The Happy Time. I had a regular piano bar gig for years at a really nice place across from Keller Auditorium, which used to be the main concert hall in Portland. Goulet came in after a concert late, late one night (it was almost closing time, which, IIRC, was 1:00 a.m.), and I started playing The Happy Time when I saw him. He grinned and gave me a thumb's up and left a rather sizable tip. ;D

DVD: I am in reviewing boxed sets hell right now. Just finished the mammoth musicals set, only to be given the 17 disc (yes, you read that right) BBC Natural History set, which includes Planet Earth (which, luckily, I've already seen), Blue Planet, and a bunch of other stuff. I also have a Daniel Radcliffe feature called My Boy Jack and some Bronte BBC adaptation. All of this whilst Betsy and I attempt to make it through Sweeney Todd. Speaking of which, it's been a while since I've seen the show, but doesn't the "old woman" first show up right when Sweeney gets off the boat? Or am I misremembering that?

She was a woman of indeterminate age. In any case, she knew only one chord progression, and every song fit into it, whether it wanted to or not.
Furthermore, the piano was in a side alcove on the way to the restrooms, and whenever anyone that she knew passed by, she'd stop - right in the middle of a phrase - and chat. And when her conversation was completed, she'd jump back in, mid-phrase, just exactly where she'd left off. What a hoot!
Thank you, music lovers! I don't remember how the food was; we just went for the entertainment! :)

My favorite daffy woman lounge pianist story concerns Jeannie Hoffman, who was a legend 'round these parts and actually had charting albums in the late 50s on Capitol, IIRC. Jeannie had a bit of a drinking problem by the time I saw her. One night I asked her if she knew "You Go to My Head" (which, if you ask me, any lounge pianist worth their salt should know), and she paused for a moment, where you could literally see the little wheels spinning in her head making one of those stream of consciousness connections, and then she slurred, "Well, I don't know that one, but I can do 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.'" And she did.

Book: Setting the Table, by Danny Meyer. It took him six chapters to get through all the "and then I did such and such" stuff, but now that I've gotten past all that, his comments on how to run a business are pretty interesting.
DVD: Stargate SG-1, Season Two, disc two. And I've the second half of Howl's Moving Castle to watch.
CD player in my room: Mike Oldfield's Music of the Spheres. Some of the rhythms are directly lifted from Tubular Bells, but there's lots of other interesting things going on musically.

It's never too late...
I had LANAP surgery and it went very well. The dentist took care of the right-side uppers and lowers. I have spent a good part of my life in a dentist's chair, but in the past few years I fell victim to an assembly-line practice set up by my dental insurance provider and the results were decidedly mixed. I had a number of teeth crowned, only to later have them re-crowned because the "insurance" would not authorize a root canal before the crown was installed. I had co-pays, etc., but the dentists never said, "You need this, and your insurance won't cover it, but I can do it for $_____.
I will spare details of a very painful abscess that was the last straw (it was a tooth that had been crowned less than six months before). I decided that was my last visit there.
I switched dental plans at work and went searching for someone who would tell me exactly what I need and would work with me, over time, to ensure I got what I could afford at the time, with a definite goal for near-future continuation.
I found her last year, and we have been moving toward what I believe will last me the rest of my life. Today, however, we started laying the foundation. LANAP is the laser, less-invasive, version of periodontal gum surgery. It's also pricey. But I decided I'm worth it.
The mouth has four quadrants -- upper and lower, right side and left side. My dentist does two quadrants at a time. Today we did the right side. We do the left side next Friday.
I am one of those people who have a tough time getting completely "numb" during the preparation for dental work. Sometimes, the dentist hits the right spot. Sometimes not.
Today, it was important that the entire right side of my mouth was good a numb. It didn't "quite" get there, but I toughed it out. And it was interesting. When you can partially feel what is being done, you get a mental image of the laser at work. I was never in pain, mind you. Sometimes you just don't want to feel what is being done, even if you can hear it (like the planing of the root of a tooth!!!). It was a 2-hour procedure, and now I am home and cannot eat anything but soup/mushy stuff for the next three days, and only on the opposite side.
There! Now I've shared and you all get an idea of why I'm home and why I'll also be home next Friday!!!

In other news, I did step out a little earlier to get my hair cut. I was afraid that since it was Friday, and since I was getting to my barber shop a little later than usual that there would be quite a wait for a free chair/barber. Well, when I got down to Chelsea, all the chairs were filled, but no one was waiting! And, of course, as soon as I got seated, one of the barbers went on his lunch break, and three more guys walked in. All in the timing. :)

DR George, my friend Bill Burden told me at Kim's engagement party that the CANDIDE was being released on commercial DVD. Is this a commercial release you've been viewing? Bill's a great guy and I've known him for several years now. I got him the role of the doctor on the John Yap MOST HAPPY FELLA. Bill's wife beautiful wife Carol was the Dory when I worked on GREENWILLOW for Utah Festival Opera. Bill and Carol met on a production of CANDIDE; she was the Cunegonde.

On a happier note, the "King's Barcarolle" from the Bill Burden-Anna Christy-Kim Criswell-Lambert Wilson CANDIDE at the Paris Opera.
DR George, I'm sure of one thing about CANDIDE: Kim Criswell has to sound better in the role for a legit mezzo than the over-parted Lupone. Also, I believe this production was based on the Scottish Opera libretto and not the 1973 Broadway Theatre version.
I love Patti, but I love Kim, also. Kim sounds and is WONDERFUL in this. :D

I then had a problematic phone call from the Chance saying they didn't know if they were going to be able to afford the musicians for the show. Needless to say, I was not happy and I have written a strong e-mail about it. Obviously, at the very beginning it was agreed that they would pay for the piano, bass, and drums, and I would donate my salary back to pay for the additional two musicians. Now I'm being told that we'll probably only be able to have the three. Our musical director cannot possibly play all the stuff the reeds and second keyboard do, and I'm really annoyed about this. Their having a board meeting tomorrow and I've suggested strongly they do what need be done to have this be right. Frankly, I would not have agreed to doing the show had I known this back in January. It's part of a big festival and a lot of people are going to be coming and I don't want the show presented in a way that doesn't serve the score.

My sympathies with DR RON. Back when I had dental insurance they never wanted to pay for my crowns, despite charging high premiums. One year I joined what was supposed to be a top-rated HMO. The dental care I received from that dentist was far below what I'd received from any other. I haven't had dental insurance in many years and I don't miss it. In my view, there are areas in life where you can cut corners, and some where you really don't want to. Dental care is one area where I want things DONE RIGHT. I have a wonderful dentist now--and he isn't even expensive! I will indeed miss him when I move.

While I cooked and ate lunch today, I put in the episode of BONES that's going to be shown tonight on Fox, and I had the Toshiba HD-DVD player do the upconverting.
The BONES second season box is the closest to HD-DVD when upconverted than any other TV series I have in my collection. Many times while watching this episode I had to keep reminding myself that it was sDVD.

When that was finished, I watched BLAST OF SILENCE, the Criterion DVD that's coming out next Tuesday. It was made on a budget of $20,000 back in 1960 filming in the streets and stores and bars of NYC. Very much like BREATHLESS in Paris (but without the great actors, the breathtaking camera set-ups and superb story), BLAST OF SILENCE did bring back memories of old NYC, but I'm frankly surprised the film has gotten this revival of attention. It's OK for a low budget quickie, but I saw nothing about it that would make it something to be heralded as a lost masterpiece.

Next, I watched the bonus features on BLAST OF SILENCE. It begins with a 60 min documentary on the making of the film which was cobbled together from a film made in 1990 and some beginning and end pieces added in 2006. Star-director-writer Allen Baron walks around to the various locations and comments on how things have changed since 1960.
Most interesting fact: Peter Falk was slated to play the lead but landed MURDER INC. and had to bow out, so director Baron played the lead himself.

There are two photo ste-through sections on the disc: one comparison locations then and now and another a selection of 39 Polaroids made during filming of various actors and locations.

I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS with, once again, all my predictions about the direction of the plot coming true.

Speaking on tin-eared critics, one of the DC reviewers knocked the HAPPY TIME score, which I think is one of Kander & Ebb's best. I was lucky to see the Goodspeed production in 1979, which had a large - for Goodspeed - orchestra of around 15 players, and a good cast except for the Robert Goulet role. It was a wonderful production that put back material that Gower Champion foolishly cut and there were three more songs, as I recall, that helped the show a lot. I told Michael Price they should have brought it in so all the little boys who couldn't be in ANNIE would have a show running in New York.

One was a song near the end for Joe Masiell as the uncle called "Running." Another was for the parents of Bibi, and the third is too vague at this point.
There's this funny Verizon commercial running now in which a young lady comes upon her ex "Kevin" and comments on his fear of commitment. The actor playing Kevin looks so familiar I keep thinking, did we work on something together? NYSTI? Encores? Auditions? I hate it when this happens!

Tried to listen to Frances Reid (Alice from Days of Our Lives) I believe this was recorded prior to her stroke, but being well into her late 80's/early 90's at that time she had a hard time remember anything and was surprised that she had done things. She seemed to like everyone that she work with except for Susan Seaforth Hayes who seemed not to like Frances Reid and didn't understand why. It was rather sad to see this. She is now 94

I've been reading up on the Harlequinade and its place in pantomime history. I think the "men in white" reference has to do with the pantomime clown makeup. The clown usually interrupted the romance of Harlequin and Columbine in the comicinterlude. The great British clown Grimaldi was usually the star of the pantomime of the 1850s.

I have to sing at a black tie gala event next Saturday. I've been dreading it. So about a month ago, I printed out all my words, laminated the sheet, and have been carrying it around with me every time I take the dog for a walk.
And I guess it worked! First rehearsal with the accompanist last night, and I didn't forget any of my lyrics!

Good Evening!
Well, it's been a day of laundry, cleaning and clearing things off the DVR for me. One of things that I happened to record was this week's ABC Primetime Live - "The Last Lecture: A Love Story for Your Life". I had decided at the last minute to set the DVR to record it before I headed to the theatre, and, boy, am I glad I did! Yes, I cried during almost every segment, but they were good tears. -And talk about putting things in perspective!
In short, one of the most inspirational, moving and motivating hours of TV I have ever watched. -And I'm setting aside some time to watch the "real" Last Lecture.
The story centers around Carnegie-Mellon professor, Randy Pausch, and how he has lived his life and continues(!) to live his life. Just an amazing person, an amazing example, and an amazing Teacher.
There's no real way I can describe "everything", however, ABC does have the Primetime Live show on their website, and it is divided into segments for easy viewing. Once you watch the first segment, I'm sure you'll watch the rest.

The Sarah Jane Adventures got off to a good start tonight. No, it's not as complex as Doctor Who or Torchwood, but it's not supposed to be - it's the kid's version. Anyone who's seen the early episodes of Doctor Who - the original version with William Hartnell, back in the days when he was a crotchety old man travelling around through time and space with his granddaughter Susan, and accidentally kidnapped teachers Barbara and Ian, will recognize SJA's heritage.
Good to see Elizabeth Sladen back in good form. And Samantha Bond makes a great villian, not just the cool and sexy Moneypenny from the Bond films.
And that's as far as I can go without SPOILERS.

I'm watching the MANSFIELD PARK from this year's Masterpiece Theatre Jane Austen Festival. The story's there, greatly condensed into 90 minutes, but the dialogue is blatantly obvious, not at all Miss Austen's style, and the tone is off. The Crawfords are much too obvious, as is Maria Bertram's leering at Henry Crawford behind her husband's back. And where's the evil Mrs Norris, one of the great villains? She hardly exists. Not too good, I fear.

Aww... They just featured one of my old hangouts, The Village, in Richmond, VA on "Diners, Dives and Drive-Ins". Damn! Now I'm craving some of their beer-battered onion rings!

My mom sent me an e-mail today to let me know she spent the past two days in a hospital, but that she didn't want me to worry so she told them all to say nothing to me.
That said, she had something called A-fibrillation. She said her jaw had been hurting her a couple of days and she knew that was the sign of a hear attack. My aunt drover her to an ER on Thursday morning. They both returned this evening around 6 p.m. She said the doctor scared her with his spiel on what all it "could be", but as things progressed, etc., he assured her she was okay and that it can be controlled. She has some medicaton to take and she has to schedule a stress test in a couple of months.
So...I called her and told her about "my" day. I think "this" is truly what it is to get older/old!

I thought it was a step above the kiddy far. sarah janes character is quite complex. Afterall she was a companion
The regular series is only 30 including commercials so unless the stories are multi part it just might be for the kids.

Now I am relaxing with a Bollywood (actually, Tollywood, as it is in Telugu) movie called SYE (2004), about two rival college rugby teams...the film started out with a violent and gory scene involving gangsters, which I did not like, and I presume they those characters will re-enter the plot at a late time...the wonderful musical numbers made up for the rough start, however.
