Well, you've read the notes, the notes were hot, and now it is time for you to post until the hot cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ABULIA!
-
Ooh, first post after BK
-
Re the Word of the day: The abulias are in bloom, or something like that
-
Will we never get to page two?
-
What is FJL doing up so late?
-
FJL, I'll be shipping out the Starfighter CDs on Monday morning.
-
With the heat come my allergies.
-
With my allergies comes the heat.
-
Welcome six GUESTS. Looking for anything special?
-
Make that seven GUESTS.
-
Make that eight GUESTS. Remember that wacky night when we had like 226 GUESTS?
-
Had an annoying bout of almost-post-tax-season reflux, and had to get up to have some Tums.
-
BK - Great, let me know what the postage is. Thanks.
-
Thankfully I haven't need Tums for the last week, because I'm out of them and have to buy more.
-
I am now siting up for a while to allow said Tums to get to my stomach (or is that an old wives' tale that you need to sit up for a while)?
-
Spoo, meant sitting up, not siting up (thought I guess I did visit this here site while the Tums work their magic)
-
Somehow, the notes seem even better at 3 a.m., when they're spanking new
-
Notes always seem better when your tummy is upset and it's the middle of the night.
-
Well, I guess I'll toddle off to the bedroom environment now. Teeth are all sparkly clean.
-
Larry and Skip are going to Red Bank to see Maureen in Glass Menagerie today.
Meanwhile, i shall do a few stray returns here in NYC - but I believe that with the exception of a very few strangglers, all have either gone out or are on extension.
-
That's stragglers, not strangglers, of course.
-
I made a typo, fixed it, but then decided that I had enjoyed the typo. :)
-
Brings to mind Larry Gelbart's advice to struggling writers:
"Stop struggling and write."
-
And the word of the day is: ABULIA!
And The Song Of The Day Is: SHE DIDN'T SAY YES
-
Good morning, all! As DR FJL posted earlier, I am going to see THE GLASS MENAGERIE with Skip and I need some vibes: I discovered on one of my nocturnal ambulations that something in my lower back has gone awry since last night, and while I am moving, I am in pain and discomfort. I'm also ambulating slower than I qwould prefer. I blame DR Jose, since he was the last person I saw yesterday.
That said, I need some vibes that his discomfort is of short duration because I am looking forward to my visit with Skip, the play, seeing Maureen, and having a generally pleasant trip. Thanks!
I have nothing else to report
-
The Glass Menagerie report will be appreciated.
Keir Dullea found a hat, film at eleven.
-
I forgot to post on the TOD yesterday.
I also think movie theatres were a most magical place, BUT for me, the most magical place I visited when I was a child was THE PUBLIC LIBRARY with ALL of those books on EVERY subject!
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And actually my lower back is not feeling so hot this morning either. DR elmore, I wonder if it was the seats in the movie theatre? -As comfortable as those "reclining" movie theatre seats are nowadays, I do find myself constantly adjusting my posture in order not to recline - or incline(?) - since the seats don't lock into place. In the meantime.... s-t-r-e-t-c-h...
-
However, I have already taken my walk up the street to the bodega/deli to get a copy of the Sunday Times. The walk and the fresh air felt good.
-
In other news... Well, I have not other news right now.
But at least this was a post.
-
I drove to the gasoline station to get my newspaper. Some drizzle and cooler temperatures, but not as cold as predicted.
As I paid for my newspaper, the clerk said, "I have to ask you something, I just have to ask."
So I said, "Okay."
She said: "What do you have to do to get to be Mayor of Gasburg?"
I said: "I don't know."
She said: "Oh, that's not you?"
I said: "No......."
She said: "It must be another PT Cruiser that has that license plate on the front."
I said: "Must be. But my guess is that it's an appointed rather than elected position."
-
I have not other news either, Birthday Twin.
-
I enjoyed Torchwood very much....all of the backstories. There are still some mysteries about everyone, but the slight changes to their appearances to reflect the previous years/months were very clever.
Sometimes when Owen - Burn Gorman - is photographed from certain angles, he is kind of scary looking.

Back vibes for DRs Elmore and Jose! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As MAD magazine said:
All the news that fits, we print.
-
Well, since I bought it, I might as well read it - the newspaper, that is.
Laters...

And the word of the day is: ABULIA!
American Idol judge Paula ABULIA has long covered her inability to say anything constructive about the contestants by simply aping what fellow judge Randy Jackson has said, and then saying something nice about what the contestant is wearing.

I have previously read spoilers re the Torchwood season finale.
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%] :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o[/move]
And that's all I'm going to say on the subject.
-
I don't i-Pod.
-
About a week ago, I conned one of my fellow cashiers, Brenda, into renting Sweeney Todd. She loved it, but admits to watching all the slashings through her fingers.
Today, I'll be loaning ST to another co-worker, Jaquie. It'll be interesting to see if she has a similar reaction.
-
My pursuit of Stargate SG-1, in episode order, has run into a brick wall. It seems that our copy of Season Two, Disc Two has a crack in it. Not a terrible crack, but just enough of a crack to keep it from loading on the DVD player in der Brucer's room.
:'(
I suppose I'll just have to read the synopsi of the five episodes on-line - there's plenty of sites that have 'em - but it just won't be the same as watching Richard Dean Anderson wincing every time Michael Shanks and Amanda Tapping spout a bunch of technobabble. Lordy, Richard Dean Anderson is cuter here than he was in MacGyver.
-
I'm up and about to shower. Looks like a pretty day, but I can't tell if it's hot as it's always quite cold in the morning inside the home environment. Didn't sleep all that well due to thoughts on band.
-
{{{{{{{{{BK}}}}}}}}}

And, with that, I've got to head to work. (The've called me in an hour early. Since it's Sunday, that's an hour and a half.)
Hasta La.

Good morning!
Beautiful day though we've gotten cooler than all last week. We'll be lucky to hit 60 today and will only be in the 50s tomorrow.
-
{{{{{{{DR Elmore}}}}}}}
Having back trouble is something I absolutely dread. Not only is it uncomfortable to get around to do one's normal daily routine, but when my back is out, I find it nearly impossible to sleep or to sleep for very long since once you move even a little, the spasms of pain wake you right up.
I hope your problems will resolve themselves quickly.

Yes, DR JMK, I remembered you mentioned something earlier about the sound for HIT THE DECK, so I'll pay close attention to it when I watch this afternoon.
-
I'll also be watching another one of those Janus Films short movies this afternoon for review purposes: WHITE MANE from Spain. It's 40 minutes long.
-
Shortly I shall be on my way to rehearsal.
-
Welcome eleven GUESTS. Finding anything interesting?
-
There was a nice profile of ELI STONE's Jonny Lee Miller in this morning's Parade Magazine. I had NO idea he was Angelina Jolie's first husband. They must have been together when she won her Oscar, but all I can remember is Angelina's bringing her brother to the event.
Anyway, here's the adorable Jonny Lee.
-
Good Morning, once again.
There's some good stuff in today's New York Times. The article on Greek yogurt in the Magazine was particularly rich and tart. ;)
-
Oh! And the two-page ad spread for South Pacific! -I guess they had to raise their ticket prices after the extension was announced to pay for that!
-
One of the national tours of WICKED is in Charlotte for the next couple of weeks. I have some friends who are going tonight. Having seen the Broadway incarnation, I won't be going to this one.
I couldn't if I wanted to. It sold out minutes after announcing ticket availability after season subscribers were allowed to order additional tickets.

I have never heard of Greek yogurt. Do you eat the bottom first?

Guess I'll head down now to get laundry sorted and ready for washing. Then, I'll start thinking about what's for lunch.

Speaking of laundry, I"m on my third load and have about one more to go. I hope to be done by noon so I can head to the office and work for awhile. Then I may do a little yard work, vacuum the house and settle in to watch John Adams.
That's the plan anyway. Who knows what will actually happen
-
Page Three Dorothy and Toto Dance!!!
-
And now I'm REALLY going!
:D
-
The sun is shining today. Looks nice
-
Yesterday, my ticket to In The Heights arrived at my very own mailbox. I am very happy about that. Depending on how things shake out, I'm considering skipping Curtains and maybe seeing August Osage County. Any thoughts from those in the know?
-
I haven't been doing my walking for the past week or so. I can really tell it too. I need to get back into it. I better add that to the daily list of things to do.
-
I can't tell you how much I needed to stay home this weekend. I am so glad that I didn't go to the meeting on the other side of the state or to my mother's house, especially since she had other things she wanted to do and me visiting was going to conflict with that. Nothing beats both people being glad that getting together can't happen, lol
-
Better go and get the last load of clothes from my room and take it to the laundry room. laters
-
DR Cillaliz - Go see August: Osage County!
-
Thanks DR Jose.
May 3 and 4 (Saturday and Sunday) are my days in Midtown. Think I'll try to get a ticket for that Saturday night. I'm doing a bird watching walking tour in Central Park with my friend Pam on Saturday morning. I'm sure it won't measure up to Jose's Central Park tour, but I'm still looking forward to it.
I'd like to leave Saturday afternoon and Sunday open for whatever and then see In The Heights on Sunday night. Sounds like a plan. Time to search for tickets while the laundry tumbles
-
Good morning/afternoon!
We had a warm evening. Had to sleep with a fan running. Very unusual feeling for mid-April.
-
DR TCB: No, you eat Greek yogurt like you would anything else. Unless you live in Australia or some other country below the equator.
-
My cousin Ashley has gone to the hospital in Simpsonville SC.
It seems she's in labor.
My mom and Aunt (Ashley's grandmother) are driving up there from Johnston SC as I write this.

Woo and Hoo! I love Telecharge. Unlike Ticketmaster, you can keep asking to see the next seat available. After about the third or fourth try I found a great seat on the aisle. So, I got it! Saturday Night August:Osage County and Sunday night In The Heights. I am very happy one musical and one play. Perfectamente.

DR Ron Pulliam - Congrats to your cousin Ashley and the rest of your family!
And on a genealogical note... Does this make you an uncle? I always get those parts of the tree mixed up, confused, etc.

Yeah, I've read about that. Both you and a friend of mine in Sioux City recommended both. Whenever the two of you have agreed I've liked the show ...I think I would have even liked Spring Awakening if I had seen it from the audience. It's going to be in Des Moines on tour. I may have to see it there.

I get confused too, is it a second cousin? And where does the once and twice removed stuff come in? I know I learned all this back in law school when we did estates and trusts, but I don't remember it at all
-
Hmmm if I get talkative I could hit a milestone today
-
But I think I'll make lunch, finish the laundry and go to the office...I can do milestones later.

I'm so glad bk was impressed by The 11th Hour.
Maybe we can anticipate his behavioral modifications to do his part to avoid ecological catastrophe:
Back-yard Composting
No internal combustion engine driven vehicles
Maximum use of Public Transportation
No swimming pool
Hand wash and line dry all laundry - no dry cleaning!
Reject use of all non-recyclable containers (no plastic bags from markets, no Styrofoam take-outs)
No use of home air conditioning
No grassy lawns
Solar panels on the roof
Elimination of all investments, including mutual funds, which own oil stocks.
Avoid all public entertainments that use electrified instruments, like keyboards.
Remember BIG OIL only has the power that the consumers give it!

Actually, the simplest thing we could do in the US is to build more nuclear power plants.
US gets 20% energy from Nucelar
Japan gets 30% and is building out to an 80% level
France gets 80%
Ontario, Canada gets 50% of their power from nuclear plants!

Note: 20-40 people die in coal mining accidents in the US every year - none from Nucelar Power accidents!

Larry and Skip should just about now be watching the curtain go up on the final performance of the Two River run of Glass Menagerie, starring Dear friend Maureen.
Or at least they would be if there were a curtain. :)

It was a beautiful day outside, but I had chores and movies to watch inside, so here I am. It is a nice day, though. I may sit outside on the porch a little later. We'll see how quickly I can get the review written and posted.

I began my afternoon watching HIT THE DECK. It is one of THE best transfers to DVD that Warners has ever done. Quite a few times I convinced myself that this HAD to be Technicolor rather than Eastmancolor. But, no, it's Eastmancolor all right, and sharp, free of dirt and defects and puts my laserdisc and DVD-R (from TCM) to shame.
As for the sound, DR JMK, I chose the Dolby Digital 5.1 track as opposed to the original 4 channel track. I found no obvious problems with it. Now, the voume level at the very beginning of "Cheribiribin" was a little low for Kay Armen's part of the vocal, but it quickly rose to the correct volume.
And the sound of the "Hallalelujah" finale number has always sounded echoy and a little hollow. But other than those two places, I could discern no problems at all. Sure, I'd have liked for more separation to be sent to the rear channels; it's a very front-heavy mix. But that's typical of a lot of older musical soundtracks when they've been brought to DVD.
So, for me, HIT THE DECK is the finest transfer I've watched yet from the musical box. I wish KISMET had been this sharp.
-
Next I watched WHITE MANE. It's a bittersweet story of a boy and a wild horse. I'd never seen it before, but the 40 minutes flew by. It was over almost before I knew it.
A little surprised that this won the Grand Prix at Cannes. It's well done (filmed silent with sound effects and voices dubbed in later), but it's hardly a masterpiece or even a film I would think would rank among the best of its year. It must have been a sluggish year at Cannes.
-
I concluded my afternoon watching the first 50 minutes of TWO WEEKS WITH LOVE. Robert Harris mentioned that Warners had to work from problematic elements with this movie, and there is some color fluctuation (nothing like the abomination with Fox's CAN-CAN), but overall, so far at least, it looks lovely (maybe just a little dark) with rich Technicolor and a really wonderful score of period tunes. Looking forward to finishing it later this evening.

Actually, derBrucer, I agree that nuclear energy would be a very welcome change for America; but sadly nuclear energy does nothing about solving the problem of auto emissions in the atmospheres caused by the millions of automobiles in almost every country in the world. Also, turning the U.S. to nuclear energy does nothing to stop the continuing pollution for the 99% of the world's countries that have no nuclear energy.
-
Tomorrow I'll likely start the next Criterion DVD: DEATH OF A CYCLIST. This is another film I've never seen before.
-
I have about 40 more minutes with TWO WEEKS WITH LOVE. After that, I think I'll probably watch THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHHAUSEN on Blu-ray. Eager to see what that looks like in high definition.
-
Going to sign off for a bit now and write up WHITE MANE. I'll be back later in the afternoon.
-
Matt, my problems on both the 5.0 and 5.1 mix start at the first ostensible "outdoor" SF shot of Martin, Damone and Tamblyn about the enter the club. Volume levels drop precipitously (at least on my system) there and continue to do that intermittently until the last half hour of the film, when everything is fine.
-
Sunday afternoon greetings! DH Richard and I just returned home after church in Cincinnati, lunch with Rob and Mary Linda, and a shopping errand for each of us. He picked up his 2 new suits (both black, a 2-button and a 3-button) and I went to Barnes & Noble for a christening gift for our great-nephew Timothy and a big-brother gift for his...um...big brother Nathan. We will be attending the christening next Sunday in Payne, OH, where their mother, Richard's niece, Rev. Amy, is a Methodist minister.

Hi all!
I hope eveyone is having a wonderful day.
Well, I believe I have solved the Bear/bed problem. I bought Bear a 36" Wide X 48" Long and 6" Deep Orthopedic Bed.
I swear that dog knows when your trying to do something for him. When I brought it in and laid it next to my bed he looked up a me and went "Wooorrrrr". He then climbed on it, circled 3 times and laid right down! :D
I was so happy for him! I've looked over at him several times during the past couple of nights and he seems both happy and snug.
Sheena just jumps up with me so she's ok as well. I think this worked out well.
:D :) :D :)

Thelma, Her DH and I went out to a very nice dinner last night at Cafe Don Jose in Temple Terrace.
I had Chicken and Yellow Rice with the wonderful house salad and brown bread. Yummers!
I've wanted to go back to that place for years but never seemed to manage to get there.

I have to go check on my meatloaf. Alas, not the singer. But I have seen his new phone commercial. Just about fell out of chair because I only half watching the first time I saw it.

Good Evening!
Well... I ended up back at Carnegie Hall this afternoon. Kathleen Battle was making a sort of "I'm ba-ack" appearance, and since the cheap seats were really cheap, well, I figured what-the-frell?
It was an interesting recital. She sang relatively well in a dress that she kept getting caught up in, literally kicking it to the side regularly throughout the recital. And, yes, her accompanist had his foot on the soft pedal the whole time it seemed.
Ms. Battle has quite the "history" and reputation - both good and downright awful - but, I have to say, she still has quite a fan-base - VERY vocal. The program was basically a sort of "greatest hits" for her. A lot of chestnuts from the classical art song repertory, along with her requisite Negro spirituals. Frankly, I thought she gave the classical rep a bit of a short shrift. Yes, she sounded pretty, but some of the interpretations were quite mannered and "literal" - lots of hand gestures. It was until the second half of the recital where it finally seemed that she just wanted to SING! In any case...
She did sound lovely, and she still has that bright, pingy, clear soprano. However, I could tell there was some natural "color" that comes with growing older that she was trying to avoid... hide...deny(?). She also took some of the longest between-song pauses I've ever experienced in a song recital. Sometimes she was waiting for people in the audience to get settled. Other times she was checking her lyrics from the crib sheet she had on the piano, or she was being fed them by her accompanist - sometimes during the songs! -At least it appeared that way to me. And there were times it just seemed like she was waiting for the song to come to her - or, at the very least, make her fans come closer to her by some manipulated anticipation.
Although, since I'm partially deaf from the "Brava's" being shouted by the two gentlemen behind me after almost every single number - she was also greeted with a partial standing ovation before she sang a note - maybe I'm just being too cynical.
;)
-
Back from a good work session. We reblocked I Need An Earthman the way it was at LACC and it's now much easier for our Yoni to sing it, so I think she's happy. We worked through some specifics again and it seems like we're all on the right road. And now, it's just a lot of run-throughs to tighten and hone and find new things. I'm still unsure how to approach the scene shifts, which are all done by the company. In LA they were very fluid and done in quarter light, but I really didn't have to do anything special. In NY, Adam added fright and business to them, and I recreated that here and it's just not working for me. So, I'll probably go back to just having the scene shifts done simply and as quickly as possible.
-
I had a long conversation with David Wechter about the band situation and I've had an e-mail volley with the head of the Festival, who completely understands the dilemma.

bk - I know it's been posted before, but just exactly when does The Brain from Planet X go up again? -I haven't been back out to L.A. since I did What If, and since I just got the latest issue of "Los Angeles Magazine" which features "LA's 75 Best Restaurants", well... ;)

I think we open May 2 (if that's a Saturday night) and then we play through June 15. Hope you can make it!

TCB - The 3:00 show was over about 5:25 or so, and they're taking a 6:20 train back into the City.
That's a relief. I thought maybe they were doing the unabridged version.
-
I'm doing a bird watching walking tour in Central Park with my friend Pam on Saturday morning. I'm sure it won't measure up to Jose's Central Park tour, but I'm still looking forward to it.
I think a bird-watching tour in Central Park sounds like great fun! Take good binoculars!

Well, the prospective minister came this weekend and preached this morning; the good news is that we voted to call him to be our minister and he accepted.

Donations are now being accepted, so that DR Jose can finance his tour of the top restaurants in Los Angeles on his next trip to the left coast.

May 2nd is also the day our new store, in Longneck, opens. And we're hoping to have our grand re-opening after our remodel on the same day!
That's for everyone who can't make it to the Heim of Ana. ;)

Well, there's the Lemon Menage-a-trois, which comes with a tart and two ....oh, never mind

It has a-peel

The LA Musicals festival is doing it at Citrus College, I hear :)

Woody, have you and derBrucer met Fay Jacobs since moving to Rehoboth?
Yes.
-
Yes.
Is she as delightful as her writings?
-
Oh, you probably wanted more than a simple yes or no answer.
Yes, der B and I have met Fay. She's very active in the community, what with running the downtown business organization. Unfortunately, our paths cross infrequently - she either shops at one of the other supermarkets, lets her Bonnie do all the shopping, or the two of them starve. But I don't think it's the third option, as she has a very healthy figure.
Or they may be frequent diners at the restaurants in town, of which there are many.
-
And yes, her writings are very much like she is in person. In fact, I boned up on her columns at Camp Rehoboth (http://www.camprehoboth.com/index.html) before we made the move, to get a feel for the community.
-
I don't see Herfy's on the list. I guess they don't go above 4-stars.
Oh, Herfy's!!!!
When we lived in Seattle, my brothers and I loved it when our Mom took us to Herfy's after school. Their kid's meals were the best. Not only did you get a toy, but you also got a punch-coupon good for a free soft-serve cone for dessert. -And I still remember my Mom asking the people behind the counter to check the other kid's meal boxes for other toys whenever any of us ended up with toy we already had. ;)
-
TCB - The 3:00 show was over about 5:25 or so, and they're taking a 6:20 train back into the City.
LOL, this sounds like Jane when Bryan is traveling ;)
-

I think it will be fun too. I'm not as into bird watching as my friend Pam, but I love the peacefulness of birdwatching. The birds are ok too
-
Well, the prospective minister came this weekend and preached this morning; the good news is that we voted to call him to be our minister and he accepted.
Congrat to you and your congregation. Hope it works out well
-
I think so, too, DR Laura, and am eager for a full report from DR Cillaliz!
Once again, I'm on a quest for an apartment for DH Richard and myself for Labor Day weekend and a few days before. The place we rented last October isn't available then, so I've inquired about another at 53rd and Broadway.
Labor day? hmmm.
-
LOL, Cilla. Sorry about that, but TCB did sort-of ask (in his own cute way) how long the production was. :)

I'll let you know about the tour. I know the tickets are $15.00 and I think it starts at 9:00 AM. I think it's sponsored by Central Park. I'm not sure though. Pam got 3 tickets, one for the friend she always goes to see when she's in NYC and one for me. Pam and I have gone to NACDL meetings in NYC in the past and shared a room to cut expenses. We generally do about one thing together and the rest of the time she's off with her best friend from college and I'm off with my friends. We see each other here fairly often so it's a really good deal for both of us. She and my friend Gretchen are hard core birders. They are trying to get me involved. I'm not that into watching birds, although I wouldn't mind photographing some, but I do like to just go along for the walk or ride
-
Today I got all my laundry done. I went to the office and brought home some work, then I raked all the flowerbeds in the back yard, cleared the dead wood out of the bushes, raked the back yard and put it all in bags and containers for pick up. I need to run to the store and get a couple things, then it will be time for John Adams. I'll have to do some office work after that's over. It feels good to be so productive.
-
LOL, Cilla. Sorry about that, but TCB did sort-of ask (in his own cute way) how long the production was. :)
Don't apologize, I think it's cute. ;D And I think it's cute when Jane does it too. ;D ;D
-
Ok, two more to go and then I'll go to the store
-
This is my 14,000th post!
-
Congrats on your plateau, Cilla.
-
CONGRATULATIONS to DR Cillaliz on your lofty new perch in the clouds! :)
-
CONGRATULATIONS to DearReaderLaura DR on the new minister. I wish you and your congregation many happy years.
-
After some scary problems with the computer yesterday and today, my Federal and my two state returns have been e-filed.
-
And that merits a Whew! :)
-
Congrats to DR Cillaliz on #14000!
-
Thank you for the good wishes. We are due a good one.
-
What a long day! What an exhilirating day! What a good time I've had! It was long, though: Toyland from 9 to 12:30, during which I finished photocopying charts for Lady of the Slipper and located one that was missing from the Appendix materials, a wonderful train ride with Skip in which the turmoils of the cosmos were discussed and pondered, a great play in a production that should have been greater, a short visit with Maureeen, and a wonderful train ride back wth Skip. I'm very tired now.
I think that there were wonderful moments in the production, but I also felt the director let the cast and the material down at times: the moment I rememebr best is in Act Two when the power in the apartment has been turned off, and everyone's supposed to be dealing with only candelight for illumination. Laura is showing the Gentleman Caller her high school yearbook and the picture of him in the operetta; they're standing above the candelabra which is sitting on the floor. If all the lghts are out, shouldn't they be looking at the photos close to the candles?
It's a great play and its power still kicks you in the gut, and I had a wonderful time seeing it. And I dearly love Maureen.
-
Thank you, everyone, for the vibes! My back feels much better but it's amazing how well you feel after three Tylenol with codeine! I hope it's more improved tomorrow!
-
This is my 14,000th post!
Hmmmm....
Comparing your 14,000 with my just over 12,000....
And I've been with the board for more than a year longer than you....
Yep, you're a lawyer!
;D
-
(in his own cute way)
Why, I will take that as a compliment....... or as a condiment.

Laura, I hope this pastor turns out to be a perfect fit for your church.

I've just pulled dinner from the oven, a sort of tamale pie which I've done before.
To be honest, I'm not sure if it is a tamale pie. But it's very tex-mex in style. And der Brucer liked it last time.
Meanwhile, he's watching yet another Law & Order. Strange, how many cop shows he watches, but we don't know any cops personally.
(Of course, I don't know any space aliens, but I'm a Doctor Who fan.)

Ah, just found the website for the Chance Theater (http://www.chancetheater.com/). According the website, the show runs May 3-June 8. -With special previews on May 1 and 2.
I believe they state the 8th for the usual reasons - so they can say extended by popular demand. Pretty standard here in LA. It's always been the 15th.
-
As to that list of LA restaurants, not only have I not been to any of them except for Spago, I've never HEARD of any of them. Cut? Who names these restaurants? It sounds like the usual trendy horse manure from the usual trendy LA dining "critics." I guarantee you, half of these jernts will be gone within two years.
-
So, I put on Taras Bulba. It begins. Four minutes later I'm asleep. I wake up five minutes before it's over - THAT'S comedy. Nice transfer, though.
-
"It Might Be Tamale Pie."
Preheat oven to 350.
Chop up an onion and three rashers bacon, saute in a large skillet. Add 1 lb. ground beef, crumbled, and brown. Drain. Add chile powder, ground cumin, garlic powder (or fresh garlic) to taste.
Spread contents of two 4 oz. cans chopped green chiles and one 2 oz. can olives over meat mixture, then sprinkle with grated cheese to cover (about 1/2 of a 2 cup bag, maybe a little more.)
In a bowl, mix 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup corn meal, six eggs (!!!), a pinch of salt, and the chopped white parts of a bunch of scallions. Pour the mixture over the meat mixture, spread to cover, then sprinkle some more cheese over the whole.
Bake for about 30 minutes or so. Pull from oven, let cool a little, cut into wedges and serve.
This SHOULD serve six. Only der B and I are hearty eaters, and it never serves us as six servings.
-
I dunno, BK. Some of these restaurants have been around for some time:
Water Grill, Saddle Peak Lodge, Campanile, Spago, Valentino, Lucques, Patina, all restaurants I'd heard of before der B and I moved, just off the top of my head.
Osteria Mozza/Pizzeria Mozza have the provenance of Mario Batali's successes in NYC, added to Nancy Silverton's success with La Brea Bakery - it's their partnership driving the two restaurants. (I still fondly remember a dinner der B and I shared at Po, Batali's original NYC outpost pre-FoodTV fame - yummers to the max!)
Craft - don't remember who's in charge, but this is the LA outpost of a successful chain that started in New York, and has also travelled to Las Vegas, Dallas and Atlanta.
These guys have deep pockets, and won't be disappearing soon.
Meanwhile, you weren't familiar with Mimi's Cafe until about a week or so ago. Mimi's Cafe has been around since, like, ages ago.
You might want to grab a copy of the magazine, and read. And maybe Jose will take you with him to sample the food at one or two of the jernts.
Well, you can hope. ;)
-
And one for Caller
-
Good evening!
I've been catching up on everyone's back, teeth and mother ailments, kitty birthdays, kitty condos, gigantic millstones, tax frenzies,new ministers and talk about TV shows that I know nothing about.
I am apalled at the recent development concerning the BRAIN musicians. That's ridiculous and unfair. I hope it is recolved soon, and to bk's satisfaction.
-
Regarding the talk the other day about azaleas, I started thinking that maybe what Jose saw that he thought were rhododendrons were the invicta azaleas. They have a much larger blossom and leaf structure than the average azalea.
I took a picture of the ones in my yard so you can compare the size of the blossoms, side-by-side.
Also, rhododendrons aren't blooming here yet, and I think they bloom earlier here than up north. Anyway, here's the two azaleas:
-
Beautiful azaleas, DR Edi!
-
We had an unexpected visitor show up after midnight on Friday; our friend John (the Merchant-Ivory editor). We stayed up until after two talking, and then had to hie ourselves to a glorious brunch on Saturday AM at the home of some dear friends in Marietta. They let us bring John along, and he had a great time. Some of our friends had met him years ago, so it was nice for them all to get reaquainted and for him to meet some of our other friends.
The house is an impeccably restored Victorian house from the late 1800's. The owners won an award from the state preservation organization for their work. (They did most of it themselves.)
Greg and I filmed and photographed their restoration over the years, and a few years ago I edited it into a 15 minute documentary to show on the Christmas tour. It's one of the favorite things I've worked on, because it was such a labor of love for all of us.
-
Beautiful azaleas, DR Edi!
Thanks! I can't take any credit---they were already here...but having some rain for the last few weeks has made this one of the most beautiful springtimes in recent memory.
I have been doing all the mowing of this huge yard, and lots of cleanup work...moving plants, mulching, etc. My DR has been tending to the soil and planting our newly aquired plants. It's such a huge bed I wonder if it will ever look full?
-
Another lovely plant that was already here is the bletilla orchid. It's thrilling when they bloom! They are perennial and hardy.
-
DR edisaurus - Azaleas it is! (are?)
-
DR EDISAURUS - isn't it great when friends meet friends and it all works out?
Congrats to DR CILLA LIZ on 14,000 posts....each and every one a GEM.
Improving back vibes for DRs ELMORE and JOSE, although they seem to have recovered as they are traveling all over HAA seeing plays and hearing singers.
-
DR DANISE what a GREAT solution to the Bear dilemma!!! I love it!
-
Azaleas....a strange flower....I carried them on my wedding day, and now I carry them in memory of something that has died....
No wait, that was calla lilies.....Oh heck....just make it zinnias!
-
There are also a lot of bluebells, one of my favorites, and these plants are particularly robust.
-
~~~Back Vibes for DR Elmore!!~~~
-
I want to see a picture of Bear in his bed. I enjoyed seeing T-Punk's kitty condo, with various kitties enjoying it.
-
Thanks all for the congrats!
I've been watching John Adams. Of all the episodes, I think I liked this one the least. There is only one left and that one I'm looking forward to.
-
bk - In addition to what DR SWW already said....
I thought you had at least mentioned Crustacean, Lawry's (in one of it's incarnations), and The Ivy in your notes and/or posts at one point or another? Hmm.. Maybe that was another L.A.-based DR or two.
A bunch of those places are downtown, and were set up around the Disney Concert Hall, so they've already been around for a couple of years - and show no signs of stopping or closing right now. And according to the descriptions in the magazine, only a small handful have been open less than two years. Again, the list seems to be very slanted toward "fine dining" experiences, and you don't seem to slant that way.
I think they also do a "Cheap Eats" issue, so you may be more familiar with some of the places listed there. *And I do not treat "Cheap Eats" as something bad or "low". Heck, my favorite issues of Washingtonian, New York and Time Out New York magazines are their "Cheap Eats" issues. Low in price, high in quality and flavor.
-
Today we did more yard work with a brief break to attend a baby shower. We were both hungry but we arrived at the end of the party and the caterers had already put away the food. But I'm sure some of it will make an appearance at work tomorrow, since the hosts are the people I'm working for this week. (One of their editors and his wife are the expectant parents.)
-
DR Woody, You must remember we get posts from 2 people at your house and only one in mine....if we add you and Der Brucer together, it's over 23000!!! Just something to think about :)
-
I used a "Cheap Eats" guide in Rome and had some of the most memorable meals of my life!
-
DR SWW - Tom Colicchio is the chef/founder of "Craft" (and many other restaurants). -Oh, and he's one of the main judges on "Top Chef" of course.
-
I am beginning to understnad why people hire gardeners. Ouch.
-
Beautiful flowers, Edisaurus!
-
Back recovery vibes to DRs Elmore and Jose. Those reclining movie theater seats just might have been the culprit!
I'm off to bed to rest up for my day off tomorrow...'night!
-
LOL, I was just about to ask if you are sore from doing yard work, DR Edi...I know I am
-
I knew Cut had a provenance of some sort.
It's a newer restaurant in Wolfgang Puck's brand.
It was also one of the 2007 nominees for Best New Restaurant by the James Beard Awards. That's not something insignificant.
-
6 words that are music to my ears....last load is in the washer
I'm just about to start my first load...but fortunately, I only have one load to do. :)
-
Yes, Lovely flower photos
-
This is my 14,000th post!
Congrats to Cillaliz for reaching 14,000+ Posts!
-
Sounds like a plan, DR CILLA LIZ....very close to 14,000 posts you are!
JRand, you're close to 30,000! :D
-
Was I imagining this? They were just referring to Cheese Whiz as "the Wiz" on Bobby Flay's Throwdown, and it sounded like they were playing the vamp for "Ease On Down the Road" from The Wiz in the background.
And der B has almost reached/topped my posting total. Talkative, isn't he!
-
DR FJL - Hmm.. I'm watching "Throwdown" right now too, but I didn't hear any vamp. Of course, I could have been distracted by the Philly Cheesesteaks being prepared.
ROTFLMAO!!
Thanks to all the DRs for the back vibes. I/it is feeling better, but I still get a twinge every now and then. Alas, I think it's just my sciatica flaring up again. :-\
-
Today, I went to my parents' house and swapped out four, count 'em FOUR light fixtures. The hardest part was the very first one I did. It was an outside fixture and the screws to attach the light fixture to the brace that attaches to the light box in the wall were too long (what an unseemly sentence ;)). Anyway, I went to Lowe's, which is only a couple of miles away and got some shorter screws. Otherwise, everything was simple and went quickly. My mom went to Costco and bought a couple of pizzas. My mom likes the combo, but my dad and I prefer the pepperoni, which was very good. I now have half a pepperoni pizza in my fridge. :D
You forgot Iron Chef America on FoodTV.
But it's a rerun, so I'll forgive you.
;D
I've never professed that my list is all-inclusive; we all have our favorites. I try to mention shows that get some discussion here by members, but I love it when others (like DR Jennifer) add their own favorites, particularly when I haven't included them.
-
I finished TWO WEEKS WITH LOVE. Phyllis Kirk's Valerie is SUCH a bitch in this movie. It just irritates me that poor little Jane Powell can't see what she's up to until so late in the movie.
Ricardo Montalban is still the same dream hunk in this movie that he's always been.
-
I keep hoping someone will find evidence that the Debbie Reynolds rendition of "The Hammer Song" was meant as an elaborate joke.
-
Next I watched THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN on Blu-ray disc tonight. Unquestionably the best the movie has ever looked on home video, and I don't remember it looking this good in the theater where I saw it.
The film's always been a big mess, but there are enough entertaining passages and eccentric contrivances for me that it's always a fun ride.
I really should sit down and watch BRAZIL again. I haven't watched it in at least a decade.
-
DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: kind of fun but I got really irritated with Gaby's self-centeredness.
Some nice hunks on display tonight, BTW.
-
And I loved ELI STONE again tonight. Great ending.
But PLEASE don't have the annurism taken out! The visions are so entertaining.
-
On "Throwdown," I'm guessing that the person being challenged knows the plan all along and is just pretending to be surprised when the throwdown challenge happens.
-
DR SWW - Tom Colicchio is the chef/founder of "Craft" (and many other restaurants). -Oh, and he's one of the main judges on "Top Chef" of course.
Thank-you.
Only, I don't watch "Top Chef." I've seen a couple of episodes. Just never got hooked.
Wait a sec, doing some cross-reffing...
Colicchio. Before Craft, he was the chef at Gramercy Tavern. Part of Danny Meyer's USHG - Union Square Hospitality Group. As in Danny Meyer, as in Setting the Table, the book I've been reading. Which means that Colicchio will be well-versed in Meyer's attitudes about hospitality. Which are incredible.
And, Colicchio has also written a few cookbooks. And, hey, Think Like a Chef is now in paper, on sale at Jessica's Biscuit for less than $15 (http://www.ecookbooks.com/p-20819-think-like-a-chef.aspx)!
Cool!
-
Well I am very tired. I must read a couple files and try to get some sleep
-
I don't know how prepped for the challenge on Throwdown the real chefs/cooks are. I honestly believe that when the series started they hadn't known what was coming down.
But, seriously, by this time, if FoodTV shows up at your doorstep saying they're doing a special or a new series and they want you to be the star, I'd start looking around for a redhead with his own camera crew.
At least Flay loses (and loses graciously) most of the time.
-
I feel brain-dead today. sigh.
You are not alone....
-
I have nothing to write up, so it's time to head down to bed.
Good night!
-
Congrats Cilla and SWW on your lofty new perches!
-
Beautiful flowers Edisaurus...
But PLEASE don't have the annurism taken out! The visions are so entertaining.
And great guests. Katey Sagal and John Billingsley, both in perfect form. In a word, WOW!
-
AFter reading the title of today's notes, I now have the song "I'm Hot" by Buster Poindexter running through me head.... :)
-
It was nice here today... It may hit 70 on Tuesday...
-
And I should quit for the night myself.
Der Brucer will be pulling a night-owl shift pretty soon, I'll bet.
-
I keep hoping someone will find evidence that the Debbie Reynolds rendition of "The Hammer Song" was meant as an elaborate joke.
And I'm waiting for the same thing regarding the sequel to Phantom of the Opera
-
Lawry's and Crustacaen weren't on the list Jose posted, hence I did not mention them. I like Lawry's and love Crustacaen, and one of our ensemble gals has just become a hostess there, so I'll never have a problem having to wait again.
-
Will we never get to page nine?
-
Finished Kings Of The Sun.
-
I shall not sleep until I see page 9 (almost a Ragtime reference)
Or is that i shall not marry until I see page 9?
-
Are we there yet?
-
Finally, I may sleep
Page 9 anti-reflux dance
Come back if you can't sleep. I'm just surfing the net whilst trying not to vomit on the ground. I ate three hot dogs at Carny's today - just totally yummilicious going down, but now they're still sitting in my stomach like so much fish. But, I have a whole brand new jar of Tums here.
-
Welcome ten GUESTS. Finding anything interesting?
-
I do know that some of our Chance Theater folks are lurking - come on in and join us - everyone would love to meet you.
-
I gotta tell you.
I'm using my new dishwasher for the first time (I mean personally using it) and holy moley on rye does it take a long time to wash dishes. I really don't remember any dishwasher I've ever had taking this long. I thought something was wrong, but I looked in the instruction booklet and it says that the normal wash takes 115 minutes!
-
Front! Had a good time in Fresburg (Fresno). Saw my: grandparents, mom, brother +girlfriend, dog, cats, & several friends. Made new friends, celebrated my grandfather's 82nd birthday, celebrated a friend's 40th birthday, made myself sick on my own hard punch, hit on my ex-fiance's sister's ex-husband, {deep breath} & started a fascinating book called "STIFF: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers," which I'm thoroughly enjoying & already highly recommend.
It better do a damn good job, then. ;D
