I've just finished burning another DVD on my brand new (to me) DVR/DVD burner! :D It's ever so much fun. I've discovered that you can make chapters within a title and then delete certain chapters, so you can delete commercials...I love that!
But when you originally record onto the hard disc drive whatever it is that you want to record, you have to decide what speed/quality to record it at because that's the speed/quality that it has to be dubbed onto the DVD. For instance, I've been recording from my Comcast DVR onto the DVD burner using the XP speed, which is the best speed, but that means that I only get one hour on a DVD. If I want two hours on a DVD, I have to record using the SP (next lower quality) speed, etc.

DISCOUNTBOOKS (http://www.discountbookdistributors.com/greatglobalwarmingswindledvd.aspx)
Everything you’ve ever been told about Global Warming is probably untrue. From Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth to news reports from the popular media outlets and even public classrooms which, in chicken little fashion, are screaming - the sky is falling. But is it really?
This documentary, which contraditcs these claims and has been described by some as the most explosive film of the year and the definitive answer to Al Gore features interviews from some of the Worlds leading scientists, climatologists and former environmentalists...
The Great Global Warming Swindle blows the whistle on what may be the biggest swindle in modern history:
Proponets of man made global warming warn that climate change is the greatest threat ever to mankind, and, if we do not change our ways and reduce CO2 emissions - polar ice caps will melt, coastal areas will flood and hurricane like Katrina will become common.

Tomovoz, do you remember her early album called "Short Sharp Shocked"? (Of course you do!)
I was thinking of it when I was at THE MIKADO. "One of the lyrics included the phrase "Short Sharp Shock" and wondered if that was a MIKADO reference. But I was also thinking she might have been referencing Billy Bragg. Now if it was Todd Rundgren, I would have thought differently.

Anti-bullying bill dies on final day in legislature
No gay issues move in 2008 session
...
Disappointed by a lack of movement on hate crimes, Jamie Ensley, president of the Georgia Log Cabin Republicans, found assurance in HB 89, which expanded the right to carry concealed firearms into restaurants, MARTA, workplace parking lots and state parks.
“Over the past couple of years, including this session, our legislature has expanded our right to carry firearms almost anywhere, as long as you have a concealed weapons permit,” Ensley said. “All LGBT Georgians [except convicted felons] can now legally defend ourselves with deadly force when necessary without an obligation to retreat when attacked.”
A well-armed gay population can take care of the hate-crime problem!

I just received this "snippet" from a friend which was good for a very hearty morning laugh (imho). ;)
A very loud, unattractive, mean-acting woman walked into Wal-Mart with her two kids, yelling obscenities at them all the way through the entrance. The Wal-Mart Greeter said pleasantly, "Good morning, and welcome to Wal-Mart. Nice children you have there. Are they twins?" The woman stopped yelling long enough to say, "Hell no they ain't" The oldest one's 9 and the other one's 7. Why the hell would you think they're twins? Are you blind, or just stupid?" "I'm neither blind nor stupid, Ma'am," replied the greeter. "I just couldn't believe someone would sleep with you twice. Have a good day and thank you for shopping at Wal-Mart."
Good Morning!

Greetings all.
We are without phone at the home environment. It started as a partial phone outage. We could make calls but not receive calls. We called Verizon and someone came over fairly quickly (for a beautiful Saturday afternoon). They spent time in the back area and "fixed" the phone by patching us into another "port" whatever that means. They told us the box in the back is old probably won't last but another couple of years. When I asked if we should call to have it replaced he said "it's Verizon's problem and they probably won't deal with it until it's absolutely necessary and that means digging a hole in the street to replace necessary components". He then told us that there is no dial tone on the phone but it should come back any time between 10 minutes and two hours. There is a backlog on Saturday work orders so don't worry, it will work eventually This was at about 1:30pm). Well, the back order never got through because by 7pm the phone was still not working. We called the 24 repair line and the person told us that due to the lateness of the hour and the fact that tomorrow was Sunday we wouldn't have a phone until Monday. All the workers from the Saturday shift had left the building and no one works on Sunday. We are supposed to have a working phone by noon today. I'll believe it when I hear it! I'm glad we don't have any emergencies.

Goold morning, all! The back is still out. Once again, I awoke in the middle of the night in great pain. Since this is now two days old, I don't believe the problem is the mattress; I think I did something foolish like bending wrong or sitting in the wrong position. The last time this happened was in 2004 and had to do with moving a television as I recall. Unfortunately, the 2004 problem was acerbated at the same time with the walking problem, the perianal abscess, and 18 feet of bookcases collapsing. That megillah took over 9 months to clear up so please keep them vibes on the burner!
Today, I have to schlep down to Toyland to pick up everything I left there yesterday, and then I've got some work on Mr Duke Elington's music.

I had a nice weekend, sort of.
I had no pain, so there was THAT. I did take more than my normal ration of naps, though.
And I cleared my DVR cache, including the watching of two rather entertaining motion pictures:
"Toys in the Attic" isn't exactly a classic motion picture, but it has a splendid performance by Wendy Hiller, a scenery-chewing performance by Geraldine Fitzgerald, and some good supporting performances including top-billed Dean Martin (but hardly the "star" part), Yvette Mimeux (at her long-blond-haired loveliest) and Gene Tierney (looking rather striking, IMO). Topping it off, though, was a very atmospheric and lovely George Duning score.
"Panama Hattie" was a sheer delight, although it wasn't intended to be a top-drawer MGM musical. In excellent black-and-white, this film starred Red Skelton and Ann Sothern (Sothern clearly the star but not top-billed), with some sterling supporting characters including Rags Ragland, Virginia O'Brien, Lena Horne (for the specialty numbers) and a very young, very dashing Dan Dailey (before he became a big Fox ego). Everyone had "numbers" -- Sothern, O'Brien, Horne, Skelton, etc. Cole Porter was the composer of note. Other MGM music department talents also lent songwriting support, including Roger Edens. It was great fun and lasted 79 minutes. If only ALL movies could at least be as entertaining.

I have that effect on people.

RE: BIG BROTHER (just a general comment) not re: last night's show or a spoiler.
Does it bug anyone else that they are so far behind? For example last night they showed what happened on wednesday only. But there are 4 more days of stuff that have happened.
I hate that they are stuck to their formula where they have to show who is nominated on sunday's show (even though they have already done pov in real time).
I get that there are no CBS shows between wed and sun. But to me they should have to show everything that has happened until that date. So on sundays show they should show thurs, fri and sat!
End of rant!

I am still on page 1. But i will assume that nobody has done my favorite soap actress on Y&R, Michelle Stafford (phyllis).

Michael "Mike" Seaver -- "Growing Pains" character played by Kirk Cameron.

I loved loved loved last night's ELI STONE. I will miss this show after its finale this thursday.
I have not caught up on others posts. But i wasn't as thrilled was DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. I found the bed scene completely predictable!
I guess i was expecting more.
Tonight I have DANCING WITH THE STARS. BUt i am most looking forward to MEDIUM!

No...because I am unaware they are so far behind. I only watch once or twice a week. Real-time goings-on aren't an issue for me...this season, anyway.

ROTFLMAO!!! ;D

DR George,
On my DVD burner, there is next to no difference in XP and SP quality (I find them virtually identical), and you do get one hour more recording time, so I always record on SP.
I was wondering about that. My coworker Ruth (who has this model) said that, too, but I needed something to compare. Now, I'll rerecord something onto the DVD burner again in SP mode and compare for myself. :)

George - Would you mind sharing the make/model of your DVD burner?

Goold morning, all! The back is still out. Once again, I awoke in the middle of the night in great pain. Since this is now two days old, I don't believe the problem is the mattress; I think I did something foolish like bending wrong or sitting in the wrong position. The last time this happened was in 2004 and had to do with moving a television as I recall. Unfortunately, the 2004 problem was acerbated at the same time with the walking problem, the perianal abscess, and 18 feet of bookcases collapsing. That megillah took over 9 months to clear up so please keep them vibes on the burner!
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]~~~Extra Strong Back Vibes for DR Elmore!!~~~[/move]
-
George - Would you mind sharing the make/model of your DVD burner?
No, I would not. It's a Panasonic DMR-EH50. The significant part of it is that it has a hard drive. There are a lot of DVD burners out there without hard drives, so you can only just record directly to DVDs without the ability to edit. And from what Ruth said, they're not making the hard drive burners anymore. :-\ I think that they expect that everyone will now do all their editing on their super-dooper computers. Maybe someday I'll get a new super-dooper computer, but I don't have one now.

His name is Mister Snow[/b]
And an upstanding man is he....
:D
And now, I'm off to work. Until later!
-
The Mister Miss rule is simple - the character really had to be called that and not by their first name, i.e. Mister Magoo, Miss Moffat, Mr. Ed.
And since elmore and fjl haven't done it - Maureen Silliman.
-
Excellent MS choices - I must say, Mark and I got most of the ones listed.

Oh, and I'm up. Had a decent night's sleep and have been doing online stuff for a while. A few more orders came in this morning, and a bunch of pending eChecks should clear sometime today.

Oh, my. I have friends who live there. In the early 1900s there was hospital on that site. I can't find any verification that it was the current New York hospital but I have pictures of it from the early part of the 1900s that identify it as New York Hospital. It was torn down in 1935 and replaced with other residences and then in the 60s (if my history contact is correct) they built 16 W. 16th.
-

Arnold, when you moved in was Xavier still the old school facility or had they already torn it down and built the new building? I have pictures of the old structure as well. The block has changed a lot (obviously) since the early 1900s. There was a restaurant at one point at 55 W. 16th (again I have a picture) and some of the brownstones had gorgeous detail, now all stripped and modernized.
-
Murray Sidlin, conductor
Murry worked in Portland forever. He helped me track down Irwin Shaw's unpublished play "The Quiet City," which Frances starred in (briefly--two performances) in 1939. Murry did the first production of the play since the Broadway run, and restored the original Copland underscore.

In the weird but true synchronicity department, I just this morning received an email from a woman whose email address was Mrs. Sardonicus. Said woman took me to task for not mentioning in my Farmer article that Frances' appearances on Ed Sullivan featured her singing "a demeaning religious tune" and that she went on the show to prove she believed in G-d. Of course, the fact that Frances sang "Aura Lee" and "Red River Valley", and never mentioned the Deity in either of her appearances, didn't seem to matter to Mrs. Sardonicus. ;D

Has
Morley Safer
been mentioned yet.
Who can quote the episode of Maude with the clever play on Morley Safer's and Dan Rather's names?
-
Mary Shelley!
-
Matthew Sklar - composer of The Wedding Singer (I have this CD with me at work)
-
Murry did the first production of the play since the Broadway run, and restored the original Copland underscore.
And he was also instrumental in developing, performing, and recording the chamber orchestration of Copland's opera, The Tender Land. Reducing the full orchestra to a configuration equivalent to the original small orchestration for "Appalachian Spring".

There are two other MS names in the cast...hurry up. Someone else post names! ;)

I walked out to the garage to package stuff to find a whole stack of boxes had toppled over. It was a hideous mess and took me an hour to clean up. It's fine now, but not pleasant. I believe my dishwasher takes from 60-70 minutes for the normal wash/dry cycle.

I let der Brucer handle the dishwasher.
I scrub the pots and pans by hand.

When I got home, I watched DIRT! which was the season finale and likely the series finale, too. The show had filmed seven episodes when the writers' strike hit, and during the strike, FX decided to simply call it a day with seven episodes for the season. I have a feeling this will be all for the show.
Disappointing because I didn't feel very satisfied with any of the storylines except Lucy's. It's obvious that several other stories which were on-going would have been extended in additional episodes, so I was not very pleased with this serving as a wrap-up.
However, there has been no formal cancellation notice yet, so I'll keep my eyes open to read any news of note about the show's future.
-
Next I watched DEATH OF A CYCLIST which I had never seen before. If this had been made in Hollywood rather than in Spain, I could see Barbara Stanwyck or Joan Crawford playing the femme fatale in this decided melodrama. A decent enough film, made by a Communist director of note, but usually Criterion choses movies of a slightly loftier stature than this.
-
There is only one bonus feature on the disc, a documentary on the life and times of the director, and I'm a little more than halfway through watching that. Lots of talking heads and surprisingly, this featurette is not anamorphic, rare for a Criterion bonus filmed in widescreen.
-
So, hopefully, I'll be able to get to COLD CASE when I go back down later this afternoon.

*sigh*

Hey, I did it!

Cool, sunny, windy day here.
Went to lunch and the breezes were gusty.
And there's lots of stuff in those breezes, too.
Am having serious sinus issues right now...and my eyes are watering to beat the band!

ChokeblokeChoctaw/ StockJawXXX. dkdjfjfk;lkjl;kj shanghaw.d.dljdkjldjlklkj l;kj l;kj fljkarjklajk;lkjdflk j I watched last night's BBC production of "A Room With A View" and, for the most part, enjoyed it a lot, although it could have done with some of the film's production values, especially in the "music" department.
The characterizations were pretty much spot-on, although I was annoyed by the harpiness of Mrs. Honeychurch when Lucy announced her intention to go with the Misses Allens to Greece and Constantinople. It seemed wholly out of character with the woman we previously saw in the story, but if it's true to Forster, then it must be what he wanted.
The ending wasn't at all something I admired about it. It is quite true that nearly a whole generation of men was lost during WWI, and Britain paid dearly for her involvement. It's quite possible that George Emerson might have been a casualty. But Forster didn't write it that way, and I'm not at all happy with the premise that Lucy would hook up with the driver of la carrozza some 10 years after her visit to Florence and, obviously, after George's death. It turned a rather interesting presentation of the novel into a rather unpleasant experience since "imagination" is what I appreciate in the "happily-ever-after" tales...not someone's desire to "fix" a destiny for the main characters, only to intimate something else (i.e. Lucy's romantic leanings toward an Italian peasant).
I may watch it again, because some of the cast were just marvelous...but I hated the ending so much, I doubt I'll ever retain a copy of this version in my library. Xlkdkjjf dThaj;lkj;lsij e eikdkdj kj;lkajpoygfjhflkjl;kjd fjfjfkdj kjdflkjdf slopjar stopgap stroppaw schnappesjowl.

Because there's only one subway on theEast side, it's always always congested and if it's delayed, your only options are taxi or bus. It's really not my idea of a pleasant part of town to live unless you're rich and don't mind sitting in taxis going nowhere because of the congestion. I lived on 80th and First Avenue thefirst summer I was in Manhattan. Never again.

Btw, I watched the first episode of PSYCH on NBC (still have the second one). And i quite liked it.
Btw, i have 2 questions that are TV RELATED that maybe somebody will know the answer to? (DR MATTH or RONP?).
The first is does anyone know when HOUSE is returning (and what day and time)? My dad is going on vacation and he loves this show.
The second, is, has SMALLVILLE been repeats the past 2 weeks? We get it here on sundays. And it is usually the same episodes you guys get the week before. But i had 2 weeks of repeats.
THANKS.

The Hawaii Chair (at one time this took you to the link)
-
Well, I must be leaving. My sister and I are going to Costco to look at HD TVs! For me!! :D Film at 11:00.
;D
-
JR--she didn't say which songs she "knew" (not thought) Fran did, just that they were "demeaning religious tunes."
BTW, if I'm not about to get majorly ripped off (which I don't think I am), I am the proud new owner of that cool pastel based on the Valente photo. But not at the eBay price. ;)
-
CONGRATULATIONS - I hope - DR George!!!! :D
-
Congratulations JMK-hope you haven't been ripped off vibes!

Teaching Sherlock to rest his head on my lap has been the most difficult trick to teach him. Unlike the 5 minutes we usually take, this has been going on for a couple of weeks now. He got the basic idea fairly quickly, it is keeping his head down while I pet him that has taken longer.
It is so sweet, I now say lap and he rests his head there while I pet him, then comes up for his treat.
Now that he has it down, without too much drooling, I had Keith do it with him. Oh it was so cute. About that drooling-LOL-when Keith stood up it appeared as if he had an accident. Good thing we aren’t out in public. This may turn out to be a very embarrassing trick. ;D
-
That's cute, DR Jane! Zach drools, too, when he knows that a treat is coming.
-
Sherlock drools without treats, just imagine what that becomes when he knows there is a treat. ;D
-
A veritable fountain? ;D
-
DR George - I just won "your" model DVD Burner on eBay!!!! :D

Whew! Time for bed!!
Smooches, kids!

The last two days it has been t-shirt weather. It is currently snowing :o

I've been compared to far far worse people than Jane in my day, and to none better than Jane in my estimation.
-
BTW, Skip went to Costco and brought home loads of multi-pack goodies. He left at 9:30 a.m., arrived at Costco at... oh never mind. :)
-
Thank you, DR Jane.
DR Jennifer, HOUSE returns in two weeks - Monday nights at 9 for four new episodes.
-
I am sure Maggie Smith has been mentioned, but in case she hasn't, I will.

Good Evening!
For a Monday, it wasn't a bad day.
I did indeed end up at MoMA (http://moma.org/) earlier this afternoon, and ended up having quite a good visit. I checked out two new exhibitions.
Color Chart: Reinventing Color, 1950 to Today (http://moma.org/exhibitions/exhibitions.php?id=3990)
Who knew that so much Art could be inspired by - and in some cases, made up of - paint chips/samples? And I really mean that. It was quite a fascinating exhibition, and it actually made me start to fully appreciate some of those "color block" paintings.
Design and the Elastic Mind (http://moma.org/exhibitions/exhibitions.php?id=5632)
This exhibit made my head hurt, but in a good way. It's part Art Exhibition, part high-end Science Fair Project, and part Mind Bender. There's even an installation of Electric "weeds" which is just a little too hard for me to explain, so I won't. ;) There was also a display of some computer-designed origami figures which just blew my mind, and made my fingers hurt just looking at the folding diagrams.
-
Page Fourteen Tin Man, Wizard, Dorothy, and Toto Dance!!!
-
Obviously the Masters ran late yesterday, and so COLD CASE was late starting. Knowing I wasn't going to get the entire episode, I deleted it without watching.
-
Instead, I watched the last film in the MR. WONG box set since it was only an hour long: PHANTOM OF CHINATOWN.
In this one, Keye Luke replaced Boris Karloff as Mr. Wong though it was really a restart for the series since Detective Street (Grant Withers) didn't even know who Wong was. I guessed the identity of the murderer once again making me 4 for 6 in this series.
-
After a trip back uptown to the apartment to drop off my stuff, I headed back down to Times Square to meet up with Jason to catch "Smart People". -What a good movie! Great cast: Dennis Quaid, Sara Jessica Parker, Thomas Haden Church, Ellen Page. And a great little story about some not so little subjects. Yes, it's a Smart movie.
-
BONES had a very entertaining and funny outing tonight. Some good looking motorcycle racers were also part of the package, too, though I didn't get the correct murderer.
-
Oh...
And I had already mentioned Margaret Sanger earlier today. ;)
-
Enjoyed the last NEW AMSTERDAM very much. John's past as a grifter was very interesting, and, of course, I liked the final scene very much.
-
MEDIUM brought back a character from a previous season and did a very nice episode with him.
I was too smart to listen to the ghost of the dead agent. I did what I've fussed about other characters not doing: I believed in Allison's visions despite what others say. So, I figured out what he was up to pretty easily.
I understand Kelly Preston is going to be in several upcoming episodes as Joe's partner. I smell trouble there.
-
Tomorrow I'll be getting around to THE TUDORS and JOHN ADAMS from Sunday. I also recorded SAMANTHA WHO? from tonight because I thought I recognized Timothy Olyphant in the previews, and I wanted to see him in a comedy series. (Loved him in DEADWOOD and THE BROKEN HEARTS CLUB.)
-
I've also chosen what the next review disc set will be - THE BIG GAY SKETCH SHOW - Season 1. I'll be starting on it tomorrow. It's two discs so I'm not sure how long it will take for me to watch everything. There are a fair number of bonus features.
-
Well, I must be leaving. My sister and I are going to Costco to look at HD TVs! For me!! :D Film at 11:00.

NYC DRs: We have a lead on an apartment to rent Aug. 27-Sept. 1, located on E. 89th St., between Park & Lexington Avenues. Would that be totally inconvenient? It would certainly be different from staying in the Times Square area.
DR Ginny - Well, I don't mind the Upper East Side. ;) There are some great places to eat, and if you're at 89th, you're just three blocks from the 86th Street subway station where you can grab the 4, 5 and 6. -The 5 is the express. Just take the train to Grand Central then take the L to Times Square - or just walk over the three long blocks. And as for the subways always being crowded, well.... Have you been on the 1 train lately? ;)
You're also a few blocks from Central Park (right at the top of the Reservoir, in fact) and Museum Mile.
OH! And if you want to visit DR elmore, you can just walk up to 96th Street to take the crosstown bus to the West Side ;)

Yep! In fact, Dennis Quaid portrays a professer at CMU, and his movie son is a student there.

Got a little bit of writing to finish up, and then it's off to bed.
Good night!

Thanks for the infor DR Jose. My friend Bruce (from Sioux City) said the same thing. I'm hoping to see it later this week.

I was back at the office for a few hours tonight. I left there about 20 minutes ago. I said good night to my office neighbor...he's an accountant, lord only knows when he'll get home tonight
-
Well, I've been up since 6:30 this morning, so...
Goodnight.
-
Singingnyph-I’m pleased you had such a good time visiting your family & friends. I tried reading STIFF and didn’t get very far.
It shouldn't be read on a hot crowded bus, seated next to smelly neo-hippies, when one is prone to reading-induced car sickness. ::)
Otherwise, I'm quite enjoying it.
-
Back from a good run-through. The show is really starting to run smoothly now, and each act is now down to only three minutes over what I want it to be.
-
I must now write some notes.

Well, earlier tonight, my sister and I went to Costco to look at HD TVs for me (for my birthday, which is next month...she's contributing some $ :D). We just looked. Here are the ones that I will probably choose from:
Panasonic 50 inch Plasma
1366x768
$1399.00
Visio 50 inch Plasma
1366x768
$1199.99
Visio 47 inch LCD
1920x1080
$1299.99
Sony Bravia LCD
?x? (this is the only one that I couldn't find on Costco.com)
46 inches
$1399.00
-
But looking through Costco.com, there are a couple more that I'll do some research on.

DR George - I just won "your" model DVD Burner on eBay!!!! :D
Cool! I was told to make sure that in the settings, you set it the "record for high-speed dubbing" is set to on...otherwise, when you burn a DVD, it'll burn at real-time. Not a good thing.
-
When you get it, I'll tell you where that is, and then write it down in the manual. If you lose power, you'll have to reset it.
