I have to tell you that I'm still experiencing numbness in my lips and bit of my left facial cheek.  It's really quite strange more than 12 hours after the last shot.

Thanks to those who offered vibes.  Much appreciated.

Yes, DR Jose, the next chocolatine I eat will definitely be weeks away.  The morning bun may be a bit further out.  And no more monkey bread for a while.

Butchaknowhat?  I was pondering just how much variety I was gonna be able to get into my diet over the next week or so...and it dawned on my that one thing was missing:  Puddin'!

That's right...chocolate puddin', vanilla puddin', butterscotch puddin'...and maybe even some banana puddin'.

I ain't had me no puddin' in quite a while.

Of course, soup, yogurt and mashed potatoes (preferably sweet potatoes, diet-wise) will be the mainstays.  I might puree some veggies of some sort if I think I can make' 'em tasty.

For lunch I had garlic/cheddar mashed potatoes.  Comforting, yes.  Tasty, yes (well, at least on the right side of my mouth).  But there's no nutritional value in smashed taters, I'm afraid.

I had a nice long nap this afternoon.  I then watched everything left on my DVR cache and now have 0% in my DVR memory.  What possibilities that offers up!

I, too, rewatched the "Ghost Whisperer" and "Moonlight" episodes and thoroughly enjoyed them.

When I leave here, I'll pick up my niece Lauren and drop off our out-of-state speaker in Columbus and Lauren and I will proceed to Celina to meet her parents and my DH and DS.  Tomorrow, we're all off to Payne for Timothy's baptism.

TOD:

President Kennedy's funeral - so sad.  Maybe you had to be there, but even as a young person, it seemed to me that Jacqueline Kennedy kind of kept the country together by her dignified mourning, and her son's salute was a moment I will never forget.  I didn't expect that.

The Twin Towers of course, which because I was working, I heard about on the radio, but then later in the morning watched.  Hearing about the second plane and seeing it were TWO very different experiences.

FICTION:

Miss Elizabeth Montgomery's performance in A CASE OF RAPE.

But NONE of the NBC Must See or Special episodes of any comedy.

Good morning, all! DR Ron Pulliam, I hope you will be feeling perky in no time today. My first dental memories are of the drunken Dr Leggett my mother's family used, and he terrified of dientists for the remainder of my life. It's been over 20 years since I had dental insurance, thanks to the cheap shits who owned the Drama Book Shop, and my pathetic teeth have been at the mercy of NYU dental students ever since. I like the clinic, but after you've found a dentist you lke, they graduate and the next ambitious student has other plans for making his career on your dental problems. The last one terrified me so I haven't been back in several years, but it's time. If nothing else, all this angst has made me a confirmed supporter of government supported health and dental insurance.

Today, I have luncheon plans with Bruce Pomahac and a matinee of TAKE ME ALONG at the Irish Rep.  After that, back here to continue on the Duke Ellington scores.

TOD:  9/11 without a doubt; I was in London, so the disaster was horrifying for several reasons:
    1. I didn't know if any of my friends could be in danger and a friend of DR Ginny and mine from my hometown worked in one of the buildings in the Trade Center complex
    2.  I was completely powerless to do anything in the way of volunteering or anything else
    3.  I didn't know how this would affect my getting back to the USA or if I'd get back safely

I am old enough to remember the Kennedy assassination and its aftermath on television, right down to the moment in which Jack Ruby crept from the shadows and shot Oswald.
Neil Armstrong walking on the moon.
Ingrid Bergman proclaiming, "It's a tie!"
Nixon resigning.
The LAPD chasing the white Bronco.

The pull-back from Matthew Fox's eye to show the aftermath of the plane wreck.
Sammy Davis Jr smooching Carroll O'Connor.
Harry Belafonte smooching Petula Clark.
Rock Hudson's haggard entrance on DYNASTY.
Joan Collins' faboo entrance on DYNASTY.

As for the Topic of the Day...

9/11 - I had just gotten back into town (Richmond) the night before from the fall SETC auditions in Charlotte - I decided to go ahead and fly back Monday night after I was done playing rather then waiting until Tuesday morning.  I woke up, turned on the TV, started watching "The Today Show"... I was about to go back to bed when they got word that "something" had possibly flown into one of the World Trade Center towers...  Then they started showing the footage...  That plane really did look so small in comparison to that building... A couple of hours later, I finally left the apartment - and the TV - to meet Steve for lunch at work...  That was weird in its own way too.  Since most of the hospital workers had been on shift since 6:00am, a few of them had no real idea what happened that morning since they weren't near a TV or a radio while doing their rounds...

More Topic of the Day...

As for real life events...

The Challenger Space Shuttle Disaster - I was a senior in high school, and we were watching the launch coverage in class.  Besides the actual disaster, I also remember footage of the teacher who was the runner-up in the "Teacher in Space" program.  He was being interviewed and filmed that morning during the launch... His reaction and the look on his face as he asked the cameras to be turned off...

The Rodney King and OJ Simpson trial verdicts (both of them).

Michael Jeter's Tony Award acceptance speech.

John Hinckley's attempted assassination attempt of President Reagan.  -A father of one my classmates was in the Secret Service and was working that detail that day.  We were watching the coverage in class - sixth grade, I think, - and had just spotted him in the background a few feet behind President Reagan...

Weird Daisy Fuentes moment on Paula Dean's Party show last night.  Paula had made a big speech that Daisy was going to tell a story about how if success could happen to Daisy, it could happen to anybody, which seemed like it was going to be something inspirational that we could all take comfort and hope from.  The story turned out to be that a photographer who was a relative of Daisy's sister's friend had seen how gorgeous Daisy was and offered her, out of the blue, a modeling shoot.  So I guess it's an "it could happen to you" story if you happen to be stunningly gorgeous like Ms. Fuentes.

Also on Paula's Party, they were promising a special appearance by Gloria Estafan, and Ms. Estafan appeared only briefly and only on tape - both of us thought this was a little bit of a cheat, but of course she did "appear," so it was not really false advertising, I guess.  :)

But I do love Paula's Party, anyway.  Can't wait until Skip makes those yummy-looking plantain cups.

TOD: As other people have mentioned 9/11. My most striking memories of the day are walking across midtown with a co-worker- the streets were filled with people and no cars and we would stop and look downtown each time we got to a new street. We saw the second tower fall. And later that morning getting on a bus heading uptown. It was completely packed, people jammed in, and everyone completely silent. It was eerie.

DR Ron Pulliam - You could always do the "pureed cauliflower" trick in place of mashed potatoes.  -Or actually blend them together.  I also like blending sweet and "regular" potatoes into a mash.  And a trick that I picked up from a "Cooking for Kids" book - mash some steamed broccoli and mix that into your potatoes.

In my youth the Loma Prieta earthquake, in 89 was it? My entire family was at home, I was in 8th grade. The ground started rolling and shaking like I'd never felt before. I stood in my bedroom doorway and my parents stood in theirs. My little sister was at the other end of the house and we could hear her calling. Afterward, we and all of our neighbors gathered on each other's front lawns and assessed the damage. Fortunately nobody suffered any great losses.

SNICKERS THE PUPPY RESCUED AFTER DRIFTING AT SEA, SCAVENGING ON PACIFIC ATOLL
Friday , April 18, 2008

Snickers is only eight months old.
But the cocker spaniel already has spent three months adrift on a 48-foot boat and survived four months on a tiny Pacific atoll where his owners, Jerry and Darla Merrow of California, left him when they were rescued by a cargo vessel.

The report said the Merrows' catamaran developed mast problems after setting out from California. In the first week of December, the vessel finally drifted to Fanning Island, a populated but tiny atoll about 1,000 miles south of Hawaii. It hit a reef and the couple swam 200 yards to shore with Snickers and their macaw named Gulliver.

The pets were left in the care of some islanders, but Baurile said the animals apparently weren't cared for very well, "because they don't have the same concept of what pets are."

Joslin said the bird was being taken of, but the dog was actually "left to fend for itself."

Snickers got a trim and flea treatment before boarding the cruise ship. Getting the canine cleared for travel involved the Hawaiian Humane Society, state agencies, and the Department of Homeland Security.

The pup was living in luxury for the last week as the first pet on the Pride of Aloha. He was a little uneasy with all the attention but he is a much different dog now than when the cruise ship first came to his rescue, according to crew members.

"[He was] very unsure of himself and a little bit suspicious of people and it was amazing how just in the course of the first 24 hours and day by day he turned right around," Hoyt said.
The cruise may be over but the crew won't soon forget the pooch they pampered.

It did snow early last evening at around 6:00, but it didn't stick and it didn't last more than a few minutes.  It was kind of weird to see the snow coming down; and at the same time, have bright sunshine coming from the horizon.

I watched a horror film (really not a horror film) last evening from Netflix Online entitled, THE CAT AND THE CANARY.  It was a really enjoyable 90 minutes starring Carol Lynley, Michael Callan, Edward Fox, Daniel Massey, Wendy Hiller; with Honor Blackman and Olivia Hussey as the Lesbians.  It was a delight.  Now I want to see the Bob Hope version from 1939.

I had time to watch a couple of things this afternoon.

Then I started with INDY JONES CHRONICLES. I never watched the show when it ran for two seasons on ABC. I had not seen any of the episodes in the previous two boxes (they've split the two seasons into three volumes).

What they've done is combined two episodes to make "a movie" (as it's called on the menus). The first one I've watched combines adventures during World War I in Italy (where Indy meets Ernest Hemingway and then is rivals with him for the hand of a lovely Italian girl.) Then, the action switches to Morocco where Indy is captured.

I haven't gotten to any of the four documentaries that accompany this first "movie." So, I don't know if the featurettes are five minutes long or an hour long. Should be interesting.

I can certainly tell I'll be many days with this set of episodes and documentaries.

I can say that I can see why the show never really caught on in a big way. There's not enough rip-roaring adventure that one finds in the INDY JONES movies, and the actor playing Indy at this stage in his life (Sean Flannery) isn't very charismatic.

I absolutely loved the Irish Rep TAKE ME ALONG; it's well-crafted, the songs are delightful, and it's full of heart. My friends Willam Parry and Don Stephenson were both delightful, as was the rest of the cast.  I liked the little ragtime combo which I thought sounded just right for a 1910 Fourth of July.  I would kill to score this show for a real ragtime ensemble of piano, flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, banjo, string quartet, bass and drums. I had a great afternoon.

DR TCB, I love THE CAT AND THE CANARY! It's a delightful horror-comedy that deserves more stage productions; I was lucky to see a wonderfully stylish staging off-Broadway in 1979 that walked the edge of camp and melodrama, had a great cast, and succeeded admirably.  The original leading man on Broadway was Henry Hull of THE WEREWOLF OF LONDON and the original leading lady was Florence Eldridge. I love the Hope-Goddard version, which is closest to the actual feel of the play, but it's only available as a Region-2 DVD. I first saw it on a double bill with GHOST BREAKERS around 1981 but with the death of movie revival house in NYC, I doubt that will ever happen again.

I also like the silent version, which is quite creepy and gothic but the comedy is downplayed, as I remember.

I first met Peter Howard, one of Broadway's great dance arrangers and MDs, when he was conducting BARNUM around 1980. He was always friendly and kind, always complimentary of my work when we'd end up working on some benefit together - although he never did hire me for anything! - and always interesting to talk to. I love his dance arrangements for HELLO DOLLY! (the "Waiter's Galop" is one of my favorite dance pieces) and CHICAGO, which sound so right for the shows. On a lot of revisicals, the dance music sounds as if the arranger never had a clue to what the original score sounded like.

This is leading up to the sad news that Peter Howard died yesterday of pneumonia; he was staying in a retirement home in New Jersey. Don Pippin told me a couple of weeks ago that he'd just been out to visit Peter, and I know that Steve Ross had been out a couple of times to visit. Listen to the CDs of CHICAGO and the HELLO DOLLY! revival our BK produced and listen carefully to Peter's wonderful dance charts.

T.O.D.

Real life:

1963 - the shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald live on National television.  Of course, the Kennedy assasination affected me, BUT we never saw the shooting live.  I was sitting in my pajamas, and my mom and grandmother were at the door ready to leave for church when they switched live to the basement of the police station and Ruby shot and killed Oswald.

1969 - The first man on the moon.  I was in summer quarter at college and my apartment had no TV; so I hiked down to the Ellensburg library, which had been opened on Sunday just for that reason.

2001 - 9/11 was the most horrific thing that I had ever seen.  My clock radio woke me just about six with the news that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center.  I jumped out of bed and ran into the living room and turned on the TV.  I was looking at what I thought must be a replay of the plane hitting the tower.  It was only when I realized that both towers were now burning, did I realize what I had seen.

I was delighted to see Daniel Massey in last night's CAT AND THE CANARY.  I think I only knew Mr. Massey for the OBC of SHE LOVES ME.    Looking at his credits, I assume I had seen him in other things, but I was never aware that was who I was watching until last night.  I have never seen STAR so I have never seen his Golden Globe winning performance as his own godfather, Noel Coward.

Anyhow interestingly ryan won veto. I really have no idea if he will stay with adam. Or with sharon. Or who he will want to be voted out.  It's confusing because i'm not sure if adam wants F2 with sheila or with ryan.

And if ryan keeps the noms the same, will adam do it? I have no idea if ryan will trust adam. And i have no idea if adam would vote out sheila if ryan tells me he has to.

More on TOD:

Dorothy walks out of the door.  (You never forget the first time you saw it on a color teevee).

As for 9/11, my memory of it is not completely tv-related.  I got the news as I was getting ready to go out the door for work (as Sam Morgan's) on the rec.arts.theatre.musicals newsgroup as it was happening.
Sam Morgan's had twelve television sets at that point, including one widescreen flat-screen hung above the fireplace.
I was the only server on that particular day, and working a double.
Needless to say, we tuned all of the tvs to the news channels, and there they remained.

I heard the sad news about Peter Howard early this morning, from Michael Lavine.

Today's Pitney Bowes screwup - when we got the machine I'd already advanced purchased an extra 100 bucks in postage.  We plugged the phone line into the machine and it added the postage just fine.  We then spoke to the PB people and they told us exactly how to add further postage, which is done by plugging in the phone line, telling it how much you want, and then it automatically charges my cc.  Only, we're getting an error message that says "no dial tone" so we can't add postage.  My phone certainly works so it has to be on their end because we've done everything exactly as it should be.  The problem?  They're not back in the office till Monday, so all this postage we were going to do today now can't get done until Monday, which means I'll be up at seven calling them.

I have had a very busy day.  I knew I had to do office work one day this weekend, so I decided to take today off.  I wandered a little and ended up looking at trees at Bomgaars. The guy helping me really seemed to know what he was talking about, so I ran home took a good look at the yard, went back and bought 2 apple trees, that have 4 different kinds of apples on the same tree for the side yard, and a linden tree for the front yard.  I managed to get them in the Prius and brought them home and planted them

Then I went to the library's annual book sale and bought things I really don't need, but they are cheap, so why not buy them, then to Lowe's to get blinds for my office room then to the grocery store to stock up.  Now I need a shower very badly.

I need to do some laundry but will do that tomorrow. My client's wife brought him clothes to wear, but they reek of smoke, so I'm washing the shirt and pants and may need to patch a place on the pants.  She's supposededly bringing different clothes on Monday for the rest of the trial.

Jim was unable to see the movie as he had to take his dog Scruffy to the vet. Scruff kept vomiting all last night and this morning....so Jim went to the Indiekids Short Subjects series this morning with me and we both had lunch with Mustafa at India Palace (Mustafa's new favorite place to eat...however, he still doesn't like Bollywood movies).

After wishing Jim luck at the doggie clinic, Mustafa and I went to the Grand Theater (built in 1900) and watched and laughed and enjoyed DRIVING TO ZIGZAGLAND...it is about an actor from Palistine who goes to Hollywood to make it big...only gets offered "terrorist" type roles and ends up a cab driver and starving actor. Really, really good film.

Mustafa then admitted to me that he (a Muslim) was fascinated by the Jewish religion, which I thought was neat.

I believe MOONLIGHT was expected to be a new episode, but GHOST WHISPERER had scheduled a rerun.

Correct about GHOST WHISPERER; incorrect about MOONLIGHT. It was always CBS' intention to replay the last previously aired episode of MOONLIGHT (where he becomes temporarily mortal) before launching into the rest of the season's episodes next week.

MattH, personally I've much preferred the documentaries on the Indy boxed sets to the actual episodes.  They're longer than 5 minutes.  :)

They sure are. They're about 30 minutes each (at least the five I've watched thus far) and very well done; kind of like mini-BIOGRAPHY episodes.

I never watched the YOUNG INDY CHRONICLES when it was on TV so this is my first experience with them. They just don't have the verve of the movies though they try in fits and starts to match it. Pairing two episodes together into a "movie" is a lame idea. And it seems very forced to place him in plots with historical personages in every episode.

Thanks for the GHOST WHISPERER info. I guess i just thought all episodes for now would be new!

You fell right into the trap CBS set for you to do. They had a week or two of new episodes to get people back into the mood of watching CBS and then this week, almost all of their showcase series were back in reruns for a week. New episodes start back up full time next week for their series.

I finished the second half of the first Indy Jones Chronicle. In this one he meets and becomes very fond of author Edith Wharton and she with him(who was actually old enough to be his mother in real life).

That first movie had four documentaries attached to it including pieces on Edith Wharton, Hemingway, and the French Foreign Legion.

I then started the next Indy Jones chronicle. The first part of it took place in Turkey as Indy strove to find who a traitor was who was selling French military secrets to the Turks. The perp was obvious, and once again, Indy was given a serious love interest. He even went so far as to propose to her. Naturally she HAD to come to a bad end.

What a season finale!

Next year's show will certainly be different.

Then, I finished the second part of the Indy Chronicle. In this one he heads to Romania where he and his party come into contact with Dracula. This Dracula was made to resemble Murnau's Nosferatu rather than the Lugosi Dracula. There were a couple of good fright moments, and so far this came the closest to matching the verve and tongue-in-cheek of the movies.

There are four documentaries connected with this episode as well, but I skipped to the one on Dracula and watched it to end my evening.

Richard, Rob, and I are settled into the Holiday Inn Express here in Celina, OH, after my fun drive from Columbus with niece Lauren and a visit at her parents' lake house.  They fed me much-needed wine.

The conference went almost perfectly and I'm exhausted.  I did win 2 silent auction items - a Vera Bradley handbag and an assortment of Robert Rothschild snacks and dips.

Gotta sleep now - see y'all in the morning!

But I must say I was most excited to get to my email and see some really heartfelt thanks from Samuel Bronston's son and Bronston's biographer for my review of The Fall of the Roman Empire which just went up.  I was blown away.

Good Evening!

Well... Here's today's Shopping Report:

1 Victorinox Wheeled Tote
1 Victorinox Wheeled Travel Bag (Carry On Size)
-Both in Sapphire Blue - and both were 1/2-off plus an additional 15%! :)
1 Set of Bose In-Ear Headphones
2 Pairs of Reebok Running Shorts

So, a bit of splurging when it came to the luggage and earphones, but well-worth splurges I believe.

As for the other three members of today's shopping crew, well... Jeans, shirts, dress shoes, shoe trees, sneakers, a Bose clock radio, two suits, dress shirts, etc.  In other words, we all ended up splurging a bit today.  :)

*And the Woodbury Commons' VIP Shopper Coupon Book really came in handy today too.

DR Jane - You're very welcome.  So... How many more dough balls do you have left in your freezer?  ;)

*And I really can't imagine them making them as big as the original recipe.  To me, that would sort of be an overkill of both peanut butter and sugar.

OH!

bk - As for you Pitney-Bowes woes, have you tried the following:

-Turn the machine off.  Connect the phone line, then turn it back on. Sometimes they will not recognize the phone line after it's been turned on/booted up.

-Have you tried different phone-line cords?  If you're house is wired for multiple lines - and many are - you may just need to use another phone-line cord.  Have you tried plugging in your the phone-line that connects your phone right now?  -As opposed to using the one supplied with the machine.  -Oh, and if you have digital phone service - if it's tied into your cable TV service - sometimes the machine can't recognize digital signals.

In any case, I hope your problems are solved sooner rather than later.

Only, we're getting an error message that says "no dial tone" so we can't add postage.  My phone certainly works so it has to be on their end because we've done everything exactly as it should be.

Hint: if you have call waiting turn it off. (Call waiting modifies the dial tone and some interfaces may not recognize it.)

Again, it worked perfectly yesterday - no problem at all.  Well, I'll be hornswoggled and pickled in brine.  Something der Brucer said about call waiting gave me an idea.  I knew it wasn't the call waiting because it had worked the day before.  BUT - I hadn't retrieved messages from my voice mail and when there are voice mails the dial tone beeps on and off.  I retrieved the messages, got a clear dial tone, tried it again, and voila!

DR JoseSPiano - congratulations on all your purchases.  Sounds like you had a great time.  Shopping is hard work!  :)

Well, I did a bit of shopping today, too!  I finally bought a high-definition TV!! ;D I haven't taken it home, yet...but I'm getting ahead of myself.  So today, after my niece's both-sides-of-the-family get-together/birthday dinner at my parents' house, I decided to go to Circuit City, just to look around and see what TVs they had in stock.

Title: Re:THE SHIPPING NEWS
Post by: George on April 19, 2008, 11:59:49 PM
When I got to Circuit City, one of the employees told me that they had some coupons that expired today...and one of them was $150 off any TV that's $999 or more (excluding clearance items).  That's a good deal!  I looked at all of the TVs and one display showed an "open box special" for only $1109.96 (Amazon lists this model, the Panasonic TH-50PX75U 50-inch 720p Plasma HDTV, at $1407.95, full price is $1999.99)!  It's the same model that Costco has, but $190 less!!  So what if the box is open, it already costs less AND it'll be another $150 off!  I decided to get it, and when the guy scanned the TV's "open box special" barcode and the coupon into their computer, the total before tax was $799.96!!  WHAT??  ONLY $800??  That's ANOTHER $160 off!! :D Even the Circuit City guy was surprised.
Title: Re:THE SHIPPING NEWS
Post by: George on April 20, 2008, 12:00:31 AM
Well...the bad news as to why it's another $160 off:  It turns out that the "open box" isn't so much an open box as a non-existant box.  It's a display model (still in great condition, though) but they don't have the box AND they don't have the stand!! :( Anyway, they were able to put together another box and they'll pack it very carefully.  But about the missing stand, I was thinking about getting a high-def TV stand/shelf unit at Costco that has a post you attach your TV to, so that you can swivel it back and forth.  I guess I'll get it.  And with ALL the money that I'm saving ($1200 less than the full list price, $500 less than Cosco!) I can get the stand and still be ahead!!

Title: Re:THE SHIPPING NEWS
Post by: George on April 20, 2008, 12:01:28 AM
As for me not taking it home tonight...the TV in the box is too big to fit in Larry's Honda CRV, but my friend Margo said that we could borrow her Honda Odyssey tomorow.  Her back seats can be taken out, so it'll have plenty of room for the TV box.
