Title: LIFE IN THE FAST LANE
Post by: bk on April 21, 2008, 12:12:58 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in both the fast and slow lanes, although they didn't know which, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're always in the slow lane, hence they're not being home in over six years.

Well, I need to get to sleep.  At work, I'm on a committee to come up with ideas to help celebrate Timberland Regional Library's (http://www.trlib.org/) 40th anniversary at the end of this year.  We have a meeting today at noon, so I'll need to bring something for lunch, since that's most people's lunch time and we were told that it's okay to bring lunch...so I will.  But I have to get it before I go to work, because I don't really have anything here that I could would want to bring.

So, good night Der Brucer and any guests. 8)

BK's left slow left lane puzzle:

A. When the Eastbound Glendale Freeway (134) merges with the Foothill Freeway (210), which enters from the left, the 134 left hand labes back up.

B. When the Eastbound Riverside Freeway (91) meets the Orange Freeway (57), there is traffic existing right from the 91, which often speeds up those lanes, the the 91 left hand lanes must cope with the traffic entering from the 57 and the congestion just ahead when the 91 meets the 55.

C. When a freeway loses its Diamond lanes, the left lanes slow down to accommodate the resulting merge.

This is why savvy commuters use a helicopter!

U.N. Chief Warns World Must Urgently Increase Food Production

ACCRA, Ghana —  The U.N. chief warned Sunday that the world must urgently increase food production to ease skyrocketing prices and pledged to set up a task force on a crisis threatening to destabilize developing nations.

The cost of food has increased by around 40 percent since mid-2007 worldwide, and the strain has caused riots and protests in countries like Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Haiti and Egypt.

"We must make no mistake, the problem is big. If we offer the right aid, the solutions will come," U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said at the opening of a five-day U.N. conference on trade and development in Ghana's capital, Accra.

"One thing is certain, the world has consumed more than it has produced" over the last three years, he said.

The UN bureaucrats are missing the boat, as is often the case. The primary problem is one of distribution, not production. Hell, we're paying farmers NOT to grow crops! If somebody could afford to buy it and ship, we would grow it.

Charles Champlin, former film critic for the Los Angeles Times...

...who, I just found out, now lives with macular degeneration.  He's even written a book about it, titled My Friend, You Are Legally Blind: A Writer's Struggle with Macular Degeneration (http://www.amazon.com/Legally-Writers-Struggle-Macular-Degeneration/dp/1880284480/ref=sr_1_33?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1208782466&sr=8-33).  Apparently, he's taking the irony of his condition gracefully.

(My finding this out came from checking on the correct spelling of his name.  Interesting, the sidebars I find here on the Internet.)

Charles Carroll of Carrollton - signed the Declaration of Independence

(Not included in the stage musical or film 1776, presumably because of problems with crowding.  The only representative of Maryland in the show is Samuel Chase.  Kind of a pity - the story goes that Carroll simply signed his name to the Declaration.  When challenged by another member of the Congress (who bore a grudge against Carroll because he was the lone Catholic in that corps), saying that there must be a number of other men named Charles Carroll, making him anonymous and therefor hard for King Charles to persecute, Carroll went back to the document and added "of Carrollton" to his name.

Interesting trivia.)

Chris Cwej

(I know, I know.  "Huh?"

Chris Cwej is a fictional character, a companion of the seventh generation of the Time Lord known as the Doctor.  He appears in a series of novels published by Virgin Books known as the New Adventures - they were written after the original Doctor Who series was cancelled by the BBC, before the BBC's own publishing arm grabbed the rights to the series back to coincide with the movie of Doctor Who which introduced the Eighth Doctor as played by Paul McGann.  These novels, along with a series of audio plays released on CD, helped keep interest in Doctor Who alive up to the time of the current revival of the series, but are not considered "canon."

If all this isn't trivial, I don't know what is.)

I know we're not supposed to use reference sources to contribute to the initial game, but the name

Charles Cellarius (http://www.middletownjournal.com/n/content/oh/story/news/local/2008/04/20/hjn042108mudesign.html)

appears in the 3rd paragraph from the end of this story in today's Middletown Journal.  It would not have jumped out at me as I read the paper if we had not been playing this game.

Mr. Cellarius was an architect, responsible for the Georgian style in which the Miami University campus in Oxford is built.

Fresh or Frozen?

In either case, tilapia is a very versatile and "forgiving" fish.  Sauteeing, frying, baking and broiling seem to suit it best, imho.  -Although, I guess with enough aromatics, you could steam it too.

When it comes to preparing fish at home, simpler is always better for me - I'll leave the fancier, more time consuming preparations for when I eat out and someone else is doing the cooking.  I usually just slick the bottom of a baking dish with some oil, place the fillets in the pan, season as desired, then bake for about 10-15 minutes at 350-400 degrees, or until the fish flakes easily when pierced with a fork.

This was an interesting morning. I was at the federal building around 7:15 AM to drop off the street clothes for my client to wear in court.  I went back at 8:10 or so for court and the magistrate judge said "Oh, by the way, the district Court judge can't get here until sometime tomorrow afternoon, so we're going to pick the jury and not start the trial until Wednesday"  So nice you let me know.

So I got out my cell phone to have my assistant let people know.  Of course I forgot to turn it off so it rang in the middle of selection...

We picked the jury and then as I was walking down the hallway I wiped out.  I mean totally wiped out.  my heels weren't high, but I looked like one of those fashion models wiping out on the runway.  Luckily only one person was in the hallway.

One of my witnesses has been a pain in the ass.  She's played all kinds of games and told me today she doesn't have a ride and I'll have to get her a bus ticket.  I can't buy it, it has to be arranged through the Marshal Service and they  need more than one day notice.  So, I decided I can do without her.  She would have been helpful, but I think I can get the info in other ways and I need to focus on the trial not her game playing.

So, I've decided that today wasn't really going well.  We have our jury and now I'll have a chance to regroup and go on Wednesday.

I feel much better now.  I just knew that something was a little off and I felt that way last night too (I get "feelings" when things are off - I just wish I could interpret the feeling when I have it).  Well, something was off and the trial has been delayed a day.  I feel like it's all back as it should be and I'll be ready to go on Wednesday.   I've also felt like the witness I cancelled was going to hurt me as much as help me.   I don't want her here anymore.

Thanks for the advice.

Frozen.

I agree, when I'm cooking fish at home I want it simple and easy. This sounds good!

You're very welcome.

I've grown very fond of the various spice blends that Penzey's (http://www.penzeys.com/cgi-bin/penzeys/shophome.html) makes/sells.  -They have a counter in the Grand Central Market.  Sometimes if I feel like being "adventurous", I'll sprinkle their California Seasoned Pepper on half of the pan, and Sunny Spain blend on the other half.  This works well for baked or grilled chicken breasts too.

Two weeks ago, our esteemed BK set the rules as such:

Quote
So, the game we’ve been playing is Initials. We are given two initials and our job is to come up with names for those initials, said names being known people in the worlds of entertainment, sports, news, or politics.

If we allow Catholic Charities, we also have to allow Cubic Centimeters and such nonsense.  I hope you understand.

I came up with this:
When Missus Ned McLean (God bless her)
Can get Russian reds to "yes" her,
Then I suppose
Anything goes.
When Rockefeller still can hoard en-
Ough money to let Max Gordon
Produce his shows,
Anything goes.
The world has gone mad today
And good's bad today,
And black's white today,
And day's night today,
And that gent today
You gave a cent today
Once had several chateaux.
When folks who still can ride in jitneys
Find out Vanderbilts and Whitneys
Lack baby clo'es,
Anything goes.

Refrain 3

If Sam Goldwyn can with great conviction
Instruct Anna Sten in diction,
Then Anna shows
Anything goes.
When you hear that Lady Mendl standing up
Now turns a handspring landing up-
On her toes,
Anything goes.
Just think of those shocks you've got
And those knocks you've got
And those blues you've got
From that news you've got
And those pains you've got
(If any brains you've got)
From those little radios.
So Missus R., with all her trimmin's,
Can broadcast a bed from Simmons
'Cause Franklin knows
Anything goes.

Got my DVD copy of EVENING PRIMROSE today (ordered via the iOffer website for $13.99).

Picture quality was advertised as 6/10, which I would say is a tad generous. I would say 4 or 5 out of 10. Still, there doesn't seem to be any other way to view the film at the present time, so this will have to do. I am watching it on my computer with the screen size reduced, as it drastically helps the integrity of the image.

Good Evening!

I headed out earlier down to the Barnes & Noble in Tribeca to attend a reading and book-signing by Chelsea Handler (http://).  In a word: HI-LARIOUS!!!!!

I managed to get down there early enough to get a seat in the third row, and save a seat for my roommate, Jim, as well.  My roommate and I watch her show on E! each night.  She read a good chunk of the first chapter from her new book, "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," then took a couple of questions from everyone before signing.  Since we were seated so close, we got out of there pretty fast. But it was also fun watching her interact with her fans - some of whom were actually emotional - crying - when they got up to her.  ;)

Two funny things-
-The area set aside for the reading was right next to the Children's Section, and since Chelsea likes her expletives, well... It was fun watching the looks on the manager's face every time a four-letter was uttered.
-The first person to get their book signed was a 12 year-old boy - who was there with his baby sister and father.  After the boy pointed out where his father was, Chelsea commented, "You're a bad parent."  ;)

Had another full evening of INDY JONES and his assorted documentaries.

The episode itself was the one where Harrison Ford guest starred as the 50-year old Indiana Jones though it's really just a bookend cameo. The majority of the episode had Indy in 1920 in CHicago with Eliot Ness as his college roommate, Ernest Hemingway writing for a Chicago paper and his direct rival at another paper, Ben Hecht.

Is there anyone Indy didn't run into during his lifetime?
