The first car I ever bought with my own moolah was a 1972 Toyota Corolla - yellow. It cost $1750. We put $200 down and our payments were like $30 a month. Those were the days.

Worst car EVER - there were two: Absolute worst - a Peugeot, a luxury car that broke down every other week. In second place, another luxury car, an Audi - just terrible.

Best car - my current Infiniti I30 and before it, my Infiniti J30. I have had my Infinity for close to ten years and it's simply the best, most dependable car I've ever had. I have spent less on servicing this car than any other. Knock wood it will give me another couple of good years.

My favorite car that I've owned: any of my many Toyota Camry's - very reliable.
As you can see, I don't get too excited about cars. It's just basic transportation to me.

First car: My sister and I shared a blue Plymouth Fury ll in high school
One of my favorites: The little white VW bug in college (the only time I've driven a stick shift) -- my second favorite car.
My all time favorite: My current white Toyota Prius -- I love it, love it, love it!
The worst: it was so bad I can't even remember the name or brand, but it was some little beige hatchback my folks gave me as my college graduation gift -- and it was a real lemon -- something was wrong with the design (I think they pulled it after that one year -- 1977) I think it was too heavy for the front axle and made it bow out cause of the way the tires wore on the inside and I had two flats in the first year of owing it. Anyway, I never trusted that car so was never comfortable driving it.

Oh, and DH and I had a silver K car with a sun roof during our early years that I liked and enjoyed driving...and my LeBaron convertible was fun!

Good morning, all! Another round of Ellington today. Will it never end?
DR FJL, good news! Our MUSIC MAN tickets were charged this morning.
I have to do some laundry today, so that's my first project of the morning, then the Ellington.
TOD:
First car: in college, a green VW Bug. I loved it, and when that died, I was given a used car - I have no idea now what the model and make were - my dad bought from a friend of the family. The car had been sitting out by the road on the family's farm, and the seller had painted "Fast Green Roadster" on its driver's side to alert any passing driver there was a car for sale. After washing off the paint, I discovered the car's actual paint had faded so the "Fast Green Roadster" survived in the original color of the paint like a ghostly shadow. I was known all over Oxford, OH, as FGR.
When I finished my M.A, my dad bought be a light blue Plymouth Duster, which I owned between 1971 and 1976, when I bought my brother Tom's Gremlin. I sold it after I moved to New York.[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]

Thank you, DR Miss Karen. Things seem okay at 202 West 82 for the nonce. The bugs seem to be lurking outside my parameters now, and I'm determined to keep it that way. As to my back, it seems fine as well. All the kinks appear to have worked themselves out without benefit of neurosurgery, chiropractics, or voodoo. I credit, of course, the powerful HHW vibes for all my good health at this time.

As for the Topic of the Day...
Almost all of my cars were hand-me-downs from my parents, so I never really had to deal with a "lemon". -Since if the car was a lemon, then my parents would have gotten rid of it. However, my parents seemed to have pretty good luck with cars over the years. In any case...
My first cars were: a 1985 Nissan 510 (a very small station wagon), a 1985 Ford Mustang, and a 1983(84?) Chevrolet Impala. I had access to one of those cars while I was in college. They all basically ran very well, and were very functional. The Mustang lasted the longest, and was the last hand-me-down until I bough my own car, a 1993 Ford Escort Wagon.
I really liked my Escort and it really liked me. It lasted 14 years, got great mileage (anywhere from 40-45mpg!), and survived two round-trips to Chicago from Richmond, two round-trips from Richmond to Ft. Myers, FL, and countless(!!!) trips between Richmond/DC and New York City. By the time I gave it to charity last year, I believe I had put about 215,000 miles on it.

I had a hand-me-down Buick Skylark when I was in college that my sister, who had owned it before I did, neglected to inform me had a leak in the brake line. My dad had had a very serious heart attack so I had moved back in with my parents to help with everything. My parents lived at about the 5000 foot elevation level, with a drop of at least 1500 feet to the valley floor to get on the freeway to drive to the University of Utah. I'll let you work out the physics of the first morning I discovered I had no brakes. It was a minor miracle I didn't hit anyone. I just managed to swerve into a parking lot at the base of the mountain where I was able to buy brake fluid at a store there.

My first car was given to me by my aunt and uncle as a high school graduation present (they wanted to be sure I'd come home regularly on the weekends from college and have a way to do so). It was a white Chevy Chevette with a faux vinyl blue top. It had no air, no power brakes, no power steering, but it was an automatic. I'm not sure, but I don't think it had a radio either. I added an 8-track tape player to have music available. But it got GREAT gas mileage, and I drove it into the ground during my four years in college.

When I started earning money by teaching, I bought my next car with my own money - a Dodge Dart Swinger. It was gold, and it's probably my favorite car I ever owned. I guess since it was the first bought with my own money, it holds a special place in my heart. I made sure it had the features like power steering and brakes that my old car didn't have.
When I was ready to trade it, my father bought it from me because he thought it was a great little car, too.

The worst lemon I ever had - only one, a silver Ford Mustang. Terrible everything about it, and once lots of things started going bad in it after three years, it just kind of fell apart. I've never bought another Ford vehicle.

I have to say that I really love the car I'm driving now: a 2005 Saturn. It hasn't given me a minute of trouble since I got it (admittedly, I don't do a lot of driving any more since I retired), and I can see holding on to it for a long, long time.

My first car was a 1963 Mercury Comet which cost just under $200. I had it for about a year and then bought a 1975 AMC Matador. I had it for another year or so until it broke down in the parking lot of the local Toyota establishment.
My next two cars were both Toyota Tercels (a gold 1984 hatchback and a white 1994 two door), stick shift with no air conditioning..
My last two cars have been Huyandai Elantras (1995...mushed up in that unfortunate car accident, and my current 1996 which I hope to have for many years).

Just before I went to bed last night, I went into the den to get a DVD for the bedroom player and found the electricity out again - and in the guest bathroom. I've called the handyman. Topic of the Day: The very first car that I owned was an orange 1976 Volkswagon Super Beetle. My parents got it used from the daughter of friends of theirs. I loved that car. I didn't take very good care of it or my next car, though. When I was at college, the engine of my VW caught on fire while I was driving up a hill. Fortunately, someone driving behind me just happened to have a fire extinguisher in his car and was able to put it out. Only wires and hoses were really damaged. Here's a picture of a '74 model, but it's pretty close to what mine looked like:

While I owned this car, I developed a...compulsion, shall we say...to collect paper napkins from restaurants. ;) Shortly after I got it, the defrost stopped working so I used to get napkins to wipe off the condensation that always developed. And when it froze, I literally had to scrape ice off the inside of my car!

My next car was a used 1989 Subaru Justy. I got it with only 14,099 miles on it and hardly ever changed the oil. ::) I'm surprised that it lasted as long as it did. Of course, the first engine totally died and, with my parents' financial help (yet, again), I bought another engine...not a rebuilt engine, just another engine. It was a great car, while it lasted. It had 4-wheel drive with just the push of a button. It was great in snow and ice. When that finally died, I bought a brand new car. There were only 20 miles on it when I took the test drive. It's a 1998 Ford Escort and I still have that car. It'll be 10 years old this June. :) I plan to have this car for a while longer, so I've actually been taking very good care of it...for the most part. :)

My first car was a blue Plymouth Duster that was on loan to me from my dad while I lived at home and commuted to Ann Arbor for my first half of grad school. When I announced that I wanted to move back to A2, he made me give back the car (a reasonable trade, I thought).
To go along with my first professional job and my move to Ohio in 1973, I bought a beige AMC Hornet.
The car I drove the longest was a 1985 navy blue Buick Skylark, which we bought when expecting Rob. It was my "soccer Mom" car (although DS Rob never played soccer) and I drove it until 1995. It was my favorite until I got my current car, a 2005 navy blue (do we see a pattern?) Pontiac Vibe:

The first car I ever bought, which was also the first car that was really mine, was a used red Fiat. It had a stick shift, which I'd been given lessons in, but had never really mastered, so it was interesting to drive it off the lot. Years later, it had no reverse for about three months, as I had no money for auto repairs. I'd have to park so I could pull forward.
One of my favorite cars was a blue Honda Prelude, which I kept for 12 years. I only sold it then because it needed some repairs and I didn't know any mechanics I thought were any good.
At present I have a silver Volvo S60 (sedan), which was a year old when I bought it. I really like this car. If anything happened to it I'd buy another like it. (We Volvo owners tend to be like that.)
As for cars NOT mine, a friend has a Porsche that he sometimes lets me use. I love that car! But I doubt that I could even afford the insurance. I'll stick to Volvos.

Cars - OY.... Let's just say in my life, I've owned some real lemons. Although, in those lemon's I owned 2 VW Vans, which were the best. At the moment I drive a 2003 Honda Element which I love. I miss the VW's though :(

I'm over at my sister's house with my little niece. We just came back from the doctors. She woke up with a rash on her cheeks yesterday. But they thought it was due to heat. But when it didn't go away today we went to see the doctor. She has something that is apparently fairly common called Fifth disease (i've never heard of it). Hopefully i've had B19 before. Otherwise there is a 50% chance i will be all red soon too! :(

Not-so-nice comments have been made by some of their auditionees towards some of our auditionees. Lunch started very late, so I was very late getting back. I had at least 90 minutes I could have used to watch documentaries on the INDY JONES set, but didn't know when my ride would be stopping by, so I just sat and waited. Argh!

Wow - I also had a Ford Escort....a 1984 Purple Ford Escort that ran for over 250,000 miles....and then I gave to somebody....who had it for quite some time after that. Great gas mileage. Very ugly, the heater was great. No radio though....

I picked back up with the documentaries on the INDY set. I began with one on Eliot Ness, a brilliant early career that basically petered into nothingness before he died of a heart attack.

And then I started but only watched about 10 minutes of the next documentary, this one on Ben Hecht. They're concentrating on his Chicago newspaper career by showing clips from HIS GIRL FRIDAY. I guess they're using that one since it was in the public domain. Leonard Maltin is one of the talking heads in the documentary.

There is one further documentary on this disc before I can start the next Indy "movie." Time-wise, I'm not sure if I'll get to it tonight. We'll see.

I think Madge is fictional, or at last secondary. Henry didn't need to get rid of Anne until his compulsion to produce a male heir, after Anne's failures, made hm look for another wife. I think he would have divorced her but the trumped up adultery charge made her guilty of treason and set up the execution of her, her "lover" Mark Smeaton, her father and her brother. Jane Seymour was already in the pucture but I can't recall if she showed up before or after the adultery charges. And, Miss Seymour did produce a living son, Edward, who died at sixteen.

DR Matt H, according to the wikipedia article on Jane Seymour, Henry met her in 1535 on a stay at her parents' home. Anne was executed in 1536 and Henry and she were engaged the next day. I just checked.
Thomas Wyatt was imprisoned after a disagreement with Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, and witnessed Anne's execution. He wrote a poem about it. The Boleyn downfall was accomplished by Cromwell.

What a day this has been and I haven't even left yet. Unbelievable. I'm on my own now with addressing and shipping and doing the postage, plus I had to type up my notes for last night's run-through - that took an hour, plus the electrician was supposed to be here at eleven and now isn't coming until five, the gas station was a joke (just wait until tomorrow's notes), I didn't have time to do ANY of my errands, but I did get another fifty packages shipped. I have about twenty more and at least I'll be caught up.

HAPPIEST OF NATAL DAYS, DR SANDRA!

Busy, bustling day here on the northeasterly side of Pittsburgh:
At 8:15am, I had mum into the van and on the way to a dermatologist appointment in the Hills of North - about a half-hour drive (combine that with the ten minute ritual, each time, of getting mum and her Jazzi into the van) - where the good doctor took a biopsy from the tip of her nose, which fortunately turned out to be benign.
Around noon, cousins arrived for a visit and a quick lunch.
At five-thirty, I drove Miss Dixie for her spring haircut. Had to wait with her on-leash until a table opened up, which did not sit well with her.
Stopped at Sheetz for a juice and ran into several former co-workers.
Stopped and voted and ran into several former co-workers, their parents and assorted church members.
I'll be picking Miss Dixie up in about an hour and a half. She'll be beautiful, but, she'll be beat.

My first car was a high school graduation present, a Plymouth Belvedere, used, beige. It was servicable.
The first car which I bought was a two door, Chevy Sprint, which had great gas mileage.
Then came the Chevy Cavalier, which never gave me a day of troubles until its transmission went. I must've had that car for close to a decade and saw no need to trade it in. That's the car I used most for trips to NYC and to Myrtle Beach.
Now, I'm still enjoying my 2002 (purchased in 2001) Pontiac Sunfire, so, it's a toss-up between to Cavalier and this one as to best car.

I'm over at my sister's house with my little niece. We just came back from the doctors. She woke up with a rash on her cheeks yesterday. But they thought it was due to heat. But when it didn't go away today we went to see the doctor. She has something that is apparently fairly common called Fifth disease (i've never heard of it). Hopefully i've had B19 before. Otherwise there is a 50% chance i will be all red soon too! :(

Our cars are “keyless”. I have to admit, a few times I forgot to turn the motor off and just left the car. Fortunately the car was very vocal about having been left. ;D

My first car was the smallish, light blue ’62 Olds Cutlass I learned to drive on. My mother gave it to me a couple months after I graduated high school in ’67. It was a comfortable car for me to drive.
I’ve never really been into cars. For years Keith & I only had one car between us, until we moved to the east coast. Fortunately he was either given a company car or an allowance towards one so we still only had the cost of one car.
Our lemon was the Spiffy red 2 door fastback, hatchback Chevy Monza coupe. One day Keith was so fed up with the car he turned around and spit at it. ;D About that time he received his first company car and we sold the Monza.

In 1991 Lexus introduced their cars in this country at a reduced price. We purchased what turned out to be the car with the best value, a Lexus Coupe.
Keith couldn’t resist the coupe & I didn’t protest as I had every intention of making his car mine. I flipped over this car & it fit me perfectly. With every other car I always needed various types of back supports & was never comfortable driving them, not this one.:)
Keith drove the car about 6 months and then I confiscated it. :D Fourteen years & 70,000 miles later when I passed the car along to Bryan I cried to say goodbye. Bryan coveted the car from the day he turned 16 so it was nice to know it would be appreciated.
The boys grew up in that car, Echo spent her entire life traveling with me in it, I have many wonderful memories attached to it and it is nice I can still visit the car. All this sentiment from a person who really isn’t into cars.

Today's auditions, thankfully, ended on a high note - or two - both literally and figuratively. It's always nice to end the day with people you can place in the "Yes" pile. :)

After I left the building, I met up with my friend, Carl, and we headed to dinner. He's back in town this week from Toronto to see some shows, as well as to interview with a couple of production offices. We ended up at Pam Real Thai, and had some very good meals. -The kitchen also seemed to be in a generous mood in regards to portion sizes tonight... which sort of made up for the haphazard service.

Okay loving musical theatre, I was so looking forward to tonight. There are quite a few ALW songs i love. So i was just hoping that these singers would choose wisely.
I will say i started out the evening disappointed. I didn' t like the first few choices.
For Syesha, her song was not well known (it was "one rock and roll too many" from STARLIGHT EXPRESS) They liked her. BUt i thought she was just okay. I just don't really care for her.
Jason, made me so angry. I hated his choice for him (Memory). And i did'nt like anything about it.
Brooke, i thought she chose the right song (the new song, YOu must love me, from EVITA). It was so unfortunate that she lost her lyric and nerves got the better of her. Cause this song was perfect for her. I enjoyed it. But i realize how much better it could have been.
Little david was just okay for me. It was sort of brave for him to switch up a song. But i just didn't really like it.
Carly was lucky ALW told her to change her song. I thought she did well.
But the song of the evening, which gave me chills was David Cook. HE is so going to be the winner. I had no idea he loved musical theatre (made me love him). His "Music of the Night" was so amazing. I just loved loved love it.
I will say that am i the only one here who finds it so annoying to see many of them seem so ignorant re: musical theatre? They don't know a single song??? I just wish someone with knowledge would guide them. I wanted to hear "Close Ever Door" (joseph), "Another suitcase in another hall" (evita), "love changes everything" (aspects of love).

I've never heard of a keyless car!
Instead of putting a key in and turning it, you punch a button to start the car. You have to have the remote on you to make it work. The car won't lock from the outside unless you have the remote, so you can't lock your keys in the car. I like that.
Keith's car can work both ways, with a key or by just pushing the button. That is better than mine because if you loose the remote you can work the car with the key. My remote is missing, leaving us with only one set of "keys". If we loose this other we are in big trouble. I know I should replace the key system, except they are expensive to replace & I keep expecting the "key" to show up. It has been missing a couple of months now ???

At one point in the show, Lynette was talking to Tom, and he commented that her hair was "coming back nicely." After he walked out of the room, she looked in the mirror and said, "Yeah, coming back" and had such a look of gloom and misery on her face. I assumed she was refferring to the cancer coming back, not her hair.

Just watched a movie on DEE VEE DEE titled Harry and Max which was very strange....

I had more time tonight than I expected to have, so I got quite a few things watched. I started by finishing the Ben Hecht documentary. Had some lengthy clips from NOTORIOUS, one of the all-time great films. He didn't need any more Oscars by then, but it is so shocking that he didn't win an Oscar for this screenplay.

Next, I watched the final documentary for this Indy episode: a half hour on the Harlem Hellfighters, the 369th black regiment who fought with great distinction in WWI.

Next, I watched the penultimate Indy "movie," titled "Scandal of 1920." Indy's in NYC and gets a job as assistant stage manager for the GEORGE WHITE SCANDALS of 1920. He's also dating three women at one time, one of them played by Anne Heche.

I started the documentary on Tin Pan Alley, the first of three connected with the latest Indy program, but I didn't quite get finished with it.

NCIS had what amounted to a clip show revolving around the identity of the murderer of Armand Assante's character from early in the season. I guessed wrong. OK show, but I am so glad that Tony and the doctor daughter of the victim did not pick back up with their romance.

My thoughts on IDOL.
The only singer I could find any enthusiasm for tonight was David Archuleta. He took the sappy "Think of Me" and made something soft rock out of it, turning it into an interesting song, one that I would easily buy if it were available on CD.
Brooke and Jason had disastrous nights as far as I'm concerned. And I can't stand "You Must Love Me," a weak song to my mind.
Syesha's tune was lively enough but she typically lost her pitch on a phrase somewhere in the middle of the song. Not great.
Carly's "Jesus Christ, Superstar" was out of her range. The notes were too high and she cheated MISERABLY on them over and over. Ruined it for me.
As for David Cook's "Music of the Night," it was a pleasant rendition and certainly showed that he can sing without screeching and rocking out every song he sings. But I found it unremarkable otherwise. Nice, secure, nothing weak but nothing phenomenal.

Since I watched IDOL in about 30 minutes, I had 30 minutes to get through about 2/3 of last night's CSI: MIAMI. A vigilante targeting sexual predators was making for a pretty interesting case. I'll finish it tomorrow too.

I finished my evening with tonight's SVU. An excellent mystery, one I barely figured out before the big reveal.

At one point in the show, Lynette was talking to Tom, and he commented that her hair was "coming back nicely." After he walked out of the room, she looked in the mirror and said, "Yeah, coming back" and had such a look of gloom and misery on her face. I assumed she was refferring to the cancer coming back, not her hair.

Yeah, the hair's comin' back, but not enough of it now that Rick is back in town. . . . .I honestly thought Lynette's thoughts were on Rick, not her hair or or her cancer. . .

I hope Cillaliz's trial is going well.
My trial begins in just 7 1/2 short hours. It was delayed because the judge wasn't able to get back into town on Monday as he thought. So I had an extra day of prep and I'm really glad I did. Many things have changed in the past 24 hours, a new witness, one less witness....life in the trial lane. Anyway, it will be a very short trial and I suspect we may get through all the evidence tomorrow, or nearly all the evidence tomorrow.

Back from a run-through - not quite as smooth as last night's, but still moving in the right direction. I became very ornery about the lines that are still being done not exactly as written and I will become worse and worse as it continues - hopefully it won't.

I had shocking and rather horrid news about Ye Olde Motor Car - much more work involved than previously thought - the good news is the transmission and engine are in excellent shape still, after ten years. The bad news is there are three oil leaks, belts that need replacing, tires that need replacing, starter things that need replacing, wheel things that need replacing, and the tab for it is worse than I could have possibly imagined - as he was tallying up the prices I just said in a rather annoyed tone, "I should just buy a new car." However, it's a catch 22 since I couldn't trade mine in in its current condition and get anything decent. I did ask if I did the work if I'd get at least another two years out of the car, and he said yes. And I've been so lucky with this car and have spent relatively little on its upkeep over the last ten years, that if you amortize what this is costing it's not quite so painful. What's painful is that I can't amortize - I have to pay it all at once and when I tell you it's HUGE I mean HUGE.
