Title: THOSE DARN LAKERS
Post by: bk on April 24, 2008, 12:14:38 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were not too pithy, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're stuck in traffic because of the stupid Lakers game.

I have always found the concept of sports quite mystifying. Why should I care what a bunch of people I don't know do with a ball? They don't care about me. Am I supposed to care about them simply because they live relatively near where I live? That's insane. There's no story, there's no music...no reason at all to care. What difference does it all make?

Don't you sometimes wish that you could EXTIRPATE yourself from the traffic?

TOD:

In middle school and high school, I was heavy into competitive swimming - meets every weekend, traveling all over the region, etc., etc.  Now?  I don't do squat.  :)

My favorite sports to watch on television now are diving, figure skating, and tennis.

I detest most professional sports [hockey, football, basketball, baseball] - don't understand 'em, and don't watch 'em.

Oh, and I don't bet on 'em, either.   :)

But I also realize that many sports fans detest musicals.

So I'm happy to live and let live.

I like to play tennis - singles though, doubles not so much.

I like to watch Hockey on television, especially in HD....and though I don't think I qualify as a fan, I like to watch some Nascar races in HD.....not the entire race, but a few minutes now and then.

Baseball and basketball and golf are three sports I can't even watch for a little while....even in HD.

Good morning, all! I slept late, since I could, and I think I'll do a bit of laundry today.  I have a trip to NYPL around noon, and the rest of the time I will spend on criticial notes.

I suspect that former acquaintance Joey will log in tomorrow at some point to see how many have expressed natal day felicitations, but I doubt he will post.

DR MattH, there's a side of me that thought last night's LAW & ORDER episode was as out of left field as "Is this because I'm a lesbian?" but I enjoyed the performances. I'll miss Martin; I've been a fan of his since seeing the original cast of RENT. I have a friend who was in acting class with him several years earlier and said it was all tming, that everyone wondered when Jesse's break would come.

I'm not a big sports fan, but sports have changed my life.

Well, the gay softball leagues sure did.

Not euphimismally, either.

My first lover joined a gay softball team, back in the day, and they needed a scorekeeper.  I got drafted.  He only lasted one year with the team.  I bounced from one team to another in the Los Angeles league for four years.

Sat out for a couple of seasons, after getting bashed.

Got involved again when I ran into one of the guys from that first team who needed a scorekeeper for a team he was running in Long Beach.

A couple of years later, switching teams, I ended up at Mike's Corral and met der Brucer.

Forced der B to tag along for four more years.

And finally got burnt out and dropped it.  I haven't been able to stomach watching a game since.

Der B replaced the softball with something more like hardball - he got us involved with Log Cabin.

He's now using everything he learned from me on scorekeeping and recordkeeping, in order to help his daughter work up some statistics spreadsheets for the grandlads' little league teams.

What goes around, comes around, and sometimes bites you where you'd rather it didn't.

All the same, if it weren't for the softball, I probably wouldn't have connected with der B.  And we've been together twenty-two years now, sometime this month (exact date misplaced).

That first lover of mine has a lot to answer for.   ::)

Thursday morning greetings!  We are expecting our first 80o day here in SW Ohio today.

TOD - I am a true Blue Michigan Wolverine and a huge fan of college football in general.  I also like to watch figure skating and the Indianapolis 500.

As for playing sports - NOT!  The fitness activity I've enjoyed most is aerobic dance, especially when my class met on the stage of the campus auditorium and was taught by someone who was also a dancer/choreographer.  I kept telling myself that we weren't exercising, but rehearsing numbers for a show and any day now they'd bring in the sets and costumes.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up.... And I'm back from the gym - It's amazing how fast and efficient I can be there when I put my mind to it.  I managed to complete a brief aerobic warm-up on the elliptical, then did two complete weight circuits on the machines.  I was in and out of there in 45 minutes.

As for the topic of the day...

I'm very much a fair-weather fan of my birth-town (I was only there for the first five weeks of my life) team, the Boston Red Sox.  I did play little league baseball when I was in grade school as well as soccer.  I enjoyed playing soccer a lot more.  -I had a trip to the emergency room after a fly ball tipped my glove and landed in my eye - I forget if it was the right or left one.

Nowadays, my "like" for a sport seems to be in correspondence to the amount of skin showing.  Thus I like swimming, diving, etc.  ;)

*I did watch a friend's dodge-ball match on Monday night - it's a GLBT League.  Lots of fun, and surprisingly serious(!).

In the I gotta tell you department, I just received an e-mail at Kritzerland from an Evening Primrose customer telling me "since everyone in NY has gotten their CDs, where's mine?  Send me USPS info."  Never mind that it's the USPS - never mind they just went out Monday or Tuesday via first class mail, which is not a guaranteed mail service in terms of time to deliver, never mind they went out earlier than promised, and never mind that I do not have any control over the USPS - it's the tone of the thing.  Obviously people are getting their CDs - a few on Tuesday, some yesterday, and some today.

And as for the Pit and Work Vibes, well, we'll see.  At this point, the production isn't scheduled to come into NYC until early next year (I think).  However, again, it was just nice to be amongst a group of real theatre professionals and to feel like one myself, legitimately.  -It's been a while since I've felt that my hard - and not-so-hard - work over the past years has actually meant something.

Just kindly remind them that mail from the Left Coast to the East Coast can take anywhere from 3 to 10 BUSINESS days - and that a lot of is most likely dependent on their local branch.  *And that if they wanted guaranteed delivery, they should have requested it.

DR Elmore, I thought THE EXACT SAME THING about "Is it because I'm a lesbian" when I watched the show last night, plugging this former gambling addiction on him. (Ryan Wolfe was given a gambling addiction out of the blue on CSI: MIAMI last year, and it almost made me stop watching the show.)

Since L&O is notorious for not giving us much information at all about the personal lives of its characters, it didn't bother me much, but to throw this at us in his last episode did seem rather arbitrary.

As for Indiana.. Try Goshen - it's an "easy" commute to Chicago from there.  And I'm always amazed that places named "Goshen" actually exist.  Otherwise, if you want to go further south, there's always Evansville - which is sort of a small-big/big-small town.  Lots of industry there, and it's a few hours away from St. Louis, Nashville and Memphis.

Then you could also have your choice of the college towns: Bloomington, Terre Haute, Plainfield, Lafayette, Muncie, Anderson, Elkhart, South Bend, Mishawaka, Valparaiso, Gary, etc., etc., etc...

Hello, my dear DR's -

I, too, am in the throes of Opening Weekend... and appreciate what our esteemed leader is dealing with. Gawd, I'm tired!

Compleat Female Stage Beauty opens tomorrow, for a gala-opening-night-fundraiser-with-buffet, and officially for press and public on Saturday. I think this is the only So. Cal BRAIN I won't be seeing - from first read-thru, first staged reading, first production... hate to miss it, but LOVE my show!!!

Baseball - yup - I'm from a rabid baseball family -- my dad played until he was 87, my brother played until injuries (sustained as catcher when a player slid home) sidelined him, and his two boys-from-the-second-litter are in college on baseball scholarships - one went to the college world series and finished 4th last year. But I don't really follow the pro teams -

I do like boxing... my Chuckie introduced me to the sweet science in 1981... he is a sports journalist now - covering boxing in south Florida. My sport of choice - ballet.

It's not that i really care that these 2 are the final 2. I am okay with that (i found sheila very whiny). But i wish that adam had won the final hoh. I wanted to see what he was going to do. He was quite smart last eviction (evicting sharon). I had thought he was going to screw over ryan and just not tell him what he was doing. But he really came through. I was surprised he went to him. I think that was a huge turning point for adam game-wise.
I really wanted to know if adam would have taken sheila to F2. I think he threw the last part of the hoh so he wouldn't have to do it. Now he has her vote. It will be intereting to see how the house votes. I would see james and sheila voting for adam. I think adam will win. But not sure how it will go.

But I also realize that many sports fans detest musicals.

So I'm happy to live and let live.

:)

Well, I have never felt the need to select one over the other.  I love musicals and I love sports.  My playing days of sports (and possibly musicals) is over; but I am an avid and rabid fan.  I love baseball, especially My Seattle Mariners; although I doubt they know they are mine.  I also love football, and again the Seattle Seahawks are my favorite team.  I watch Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football; and, whenever possible, both  games on Sunday during the day.  During Mariner baseball season, I seldom watch anything else on TV but Mariners' baseball.

Other sports I enjoy watching are diving, gymnastics, figure skating, and several other of the Winter Olympic Games.  BK didn't ask about musicals, so I will shut up.

There is a Goshen, Utah.  In fact some of us politically incorrect  youngsters had a parody "literary magazine" we published in high school (it was quite popular, we actually sold more copies than the "real" literary magazine, LOL) whose mascot was one Rodney From Goshen.

...I just received an e-mail at Kritzerland from an Evening Primrose customer telling me "since everyone in NY has gotten their CDs, where's mine?  Send me USPS info."...
Since the population of New York City alone (totally forgetting the rest of the state, as most people living in NYC usually do) is over eight and a quarter MILLION, and there were only 3000 copies of EP pressed, either this lassie has serious mathematical problems, or she suffers from a serious case of hyperbole, or the people of NYC are all expected to share thier copies with something like 2750 other people.  (Which totally ignores the copies of EP that were sent to places other than NYC, which the inhabitants of NYC often forget exist anyway.)

I'm trying to imagine an NYC where the people are that sharing.   ::)

Did I mention Bryan is selling his beloved video game collection on ebay?  Some of his games are collector items.  It hurts to sell but it is more exciting to go to medical school.

I mentioned all the complaints I read here about ebay sellers.  I’m very proud to announce that in 6 years of selling on ebay he only has two small, & I mean small, dings in his ratings.  He is known as having speeding mailings.  It helps he can walk to the post office, so he mails them the evening after the auction is complete or the following morning.

Can you suggest the name of a "regular" place in Indiana for a modern girl (18) to be raised somewhat sheltered (small town-ish), yet able to do some local modeling (small city-ish)?  It only figures in where's she from, not otherwise.

There is Indianapolis, of course.  But outskirts locales -- small-townish, nice communities -- include Carmel and Muncie.  Franklin, of course, is nice.  I believe JRand is from Mooresville.

I was pretty good at ice skating, tennis, basketball & ping pong.  I enjoyed horse back riding, playing touch foot ball, volleyball, baseball & handball.  I even learned to box from my brother.  I loved to dance.  In high school the modern dance teacher asked me to audition for the dance troupe she preformed with.  I declined.  Oh, I was rather decent at archery.  I loved swimming, even swam out to the end of the Santa Monica Pier a couple of times.  I was extremely good at hop scotch.  Basically if it required movement, I loved doing it.  Once my bicycle fell apart I substituted running instead of riding everywhere.

My father often took me to baseball games which I loved.  At home we watched boxing.  I never really got into football & I prefer baseball live to watching on TV.  I miss Craig living at home cuz he is our big sports fan & sometimes I would watch different games with him.  Bryan doesn’t enjoy it all & Keith isn’t very interested.

I can’t play sports anymore, which I still find difficult at times.  With Keith home I don’t watch Ice Skating like I used to.  I miss going to baseball games, specifically Dodger games.

1.  A gorgeous original pastel of Frances, signed by her, done for a Washington Post feature in 1938 for the Golden Boy tour, that is simply unbelievably gorgeous (and huge--you should have seen the box(es) it came in).  Has anyone heard of an artist named Adrienne Low or Adrienne Hall?  I'm trying to establish provenance of this piece.

2.  A much smaller box from Kritzerland that I haven't opened yet, but which I'm sure a little Sondheim music in it.

I also have two negatives, Jane, both of which were totally undeserved.  One was from a seller who had charged me extra for insurance and shipped the item uninsured.  I very nicely emailed her and asked for my insurance money back, and she responded with a negative.  I found out she was an author and I did some hysterically funny reviews of her self-published books on Amazon, including linking one of her books with Maalox under that "this book goes well with" feature.  :)

The second was a buyer who sent a check express mail and then left negative feedback the day the check arrived (before it had cleared, obviously) because I didn't ship in time for him to give the DVD to his son for his son's birthday.

I have just changed my descriptions to ask people not to bid if they think my s/h isn't to their liking.  I charge $4.50 for first class shipping in a bubble envellope with delivery confirmation.  I make nothing on shipping and it just drives me crazy when people give me one star on that new detailed rating system.  Do they expect stuff to come for free?  Most of my DVDs sell for 99 cents, plus the outrageous $4.50 shipping means they get something new for $5.49 that retails at a minimum for $19.99.  Oy.

End of rant.

JMK, Bryan's score is almost perfect so those must have been very small complaints.  His guess, the mail was a day slow in arriving, not sending.  It is still very impressive.  I'm also proud of him for giving up his collection, it isn't easy to do.

I'm practicing with Sherlock for a down stay-three minutes out of my sight.  He has his canine good citizens test tonight & this will be the most difficult part of the exam.  He doesn't stay down when I leave him with someone else.  He also does a lot of whimpering.   A little whimpering is acceptable, not a lot. ;D

The other major hurdle to his passing, is keeping him from pulling me while only wearing a regular collar.  Normally I keep a pinch on him.  I know they look barbaric but they work the best for him, and he doesn't seem to mind it.  He is fine having it put on and still pulls me while wearing it.  I wish he did mind it.

Back from the NYPL! Houston, The Lady of the Slipper may have a problem. I need to investigate further before I can accuse the Fat Conductor of Limited Talent of one more fraud, but so far all I'm seeing is a fraud in the Act Three title song.  More to follow.  Is Fatty a Fraud?

First, lunch.

DR Nursie, what's $980 in the scheme of the cosmos? :D

Actually, the NYPL Theatre Collection has the poster, but I'm surprised it's never been duplicated at for sale in the past 105 years.

When I got in, I watched HOW SHE MOVE. The drama is nothing, very phony and arbitrary. But the reason for the film is the step dancing routines, and they are impressive. If only we didn't have to suffer through that semblance of a story.
Title: Re:THOSE DARN LAKERS

Next, I watched the featurettes on the disc. There are three of them. The first had the 9 main young actors introducing themselves and telling a bit about their characters. I enjoyed hearing them improvising characterizations based on the one-note ciphers they had to act in the movie.
Title: Re:THOSE DARN LAKERS

Next, the choreographer did a feature on how she came up with the steps - a combination of step dancing, break dancing, hip-hop, and locking. The director also weighed in on how he approached filming the scenes.

The actor/dancers had a five week, 7 hours a day routine for rehearsals, and it certainly showed in the really impressive routines they performed for the camera.
Title: Re:THOSE DARN LAKERS
Post by: Matt H. on April 24, 2008, 01:18:33 PM
The third feature was the "screenwriter" discussing her story idea for the film. Thankfully, this was just 10 minutes, so she didn't have to talk too much about a story that's basically the length of one good complex sentence.

TOD:  I used to enjoy watching pro football.  That was when each televised game ran 2- to 2 1/2 hours.  Now that they run to 3 1/2 hours, I cannot maintain interest.   There are far too many teams now.  I used to watch three games on Sunday afternoon/evening and enjoy them all.  During the course of those games, I'd see scores and highlights of ALL the other games.  Now, I find pro football a bore. It's like watching golf.  WHY WOULD ANYONE WATCH GOLF?  I get the "playing golf" gambit...but I'd rather "watch" grass grow.

I used to love to listen to baseball while driving around and lounging by a pool or doing anything outdoors.  I could even get into watching a night game.  Too many teams now and too little interest in how they do.

The only basketball I've ever enjoyed was NCAA...and then only during the tournament.  Professional basketball's allure totally eludes me.  I don't get it, I cannot rationalize it, and yet it exists.  Go know.

In college, I enjoyed playing soccer and running.  Swimming and I had a flirtation in a life saving class I took.

I've always enjoyed watching Olympic sports, both summer and winter, but I confess I can see too much track and field and way too much skiing...especially the newer competitions.  I loves me my figure skating, though.  And I love to watch all the Olympic swimming/diving events.

In the Navy, I played intramural sports...football and tennis...and volleyball.  Loved it all...for the fun of it more than for any dogged competitiveness like some I encountered.   I loved beating a few people for whom the game TRULY mattered.  And I loved losing to those same people and letting them know that I didn't care whether I lost or not.  They could not fathom it.

In general, if sports keeps folks off the streets and out of trouble, I'm all for them.

But please....if anyone ever sees me wearing expensive name-brand bicycling togs, with all the protective gear and, especially, the specialized shoes, and walking my bicycle down a sidewalk as though I were about to engage the Italian biking team in competition, I invite you to shoot me on the spot.  I'd consider it a mercy killing.

And I am shocked, shocked I tell you, that the publisher is still locked into the dark ages of hand addressing!

der Brucer

I might note that hand addressing can slow postal delivery times - the postal office usually wants the full nine digit zip code and if their optical scan equipment can not read the handwritten street address, they must either hand enter it, or deal with only the simple 5 digit code - both of which can add to delays. To expedite postal deliver, those of us who deal with lots of mailings have software that prints out 9-digit zip bar codes on all our address labels.

I would say so!  Has derBrucer considered suing him?

I like football sometimes. I'm not into pro sports really except the world series.  I have been known to watch golf, I don't know why.  I used to be on a bowling league and even have a first place bowling trophy as well as a most improved patch. My bowling bowl is a lucious shade of purple.

I like to play volleyball.  Not sure what else.  Sometimes baseball is fun...love to watch skating and all the Olympics sports.

I read that as $98 & was seriously considering getting it for you.  I love you but $980 is out of my league.  I got a kid going to medical school.  Even with loans and money from the sale of the loft (praying everyday all goes well now that he is in pending again), he might need help with little things such as food. ;D

Well, thank goodness only food!  I was afraid you were going to say gas

Yes, it's Bring Your Children to Work Day here in Oakland, too.

I've seen children outside during lunch...but I haven't seen any in the building.  I know they're here somewhere.  I ain't lookin' for 'em, though.

;D

Every day is Bring Children to Work Day at Children's Protective Services.  Sadly, those that are brought in are, for the most part, abused and /or neglected.

Well, I must be off, too.  I'm going to see The Ascetic (http://www.buyolympia.com/events/?details=336), put on by Theater Artists Olympia (who did Nite of the Living Dead last December) in association with Prodigal Sun Productions, and Northwest Playwrights Alliance.  It's supposed to be very good.  It doesn't start until 8pm, but I'm not coming in to work tomorrow, so I'm leaving early today.  I'm going to attempt to clean my TV room tomorrow, so that I can set up my new high-def TV. :D

Yes the sound of the EVENING PRIMROSE cd is lovely.  I really didn't know the score, but it is certainly now on the top of my CD collection.

I guess right now, "Take Me to the World" is my favorite track, but that may change.....

The thing about negative ratings on ebay is that if someone does something awful and you give them a negative rating, then they will most likely give you a negative rating (even if you did nothing wrong).

That was my experience when i used ebay.

So i used to do something fun (just because i didn't like the idea of someone screwing up my rating for nothing i did).

I would give them a positive rating, but then explain exactly what they did wrong! :)

The auditions went well today.  The composer wanted to play the music for the people coming in today since they were all people he had worked with personally beforehand, so I had a very easy hour.  All I had to do was play their "own" songs.  Another great batch of actor-singers, and some great music.  -And I'm really liking the music from the show itself too.

Sherlock passed his Canine Good Citizen exam!!! :D  Everyone in the class passed.

As soon as the instructor said we all passed a woman walked up with her Golden Retriever for the next class.  I tried to get Sherlock's pinch back on knowing every week he wants to go play with this dog.  I wasn't fast enough and he dragged me three quarters of the way to the dog before I stopped him.  Thank goodness they didn't walk up during the test-so embarrassing.

Now my back, arms wrist, shoulder & neck hurt.  What a dog! ;D

I spent a good chunk of the afternoon looking at and picking out some new eyeglass frames, as well as getting an eye examination.  The eye exam was fast and easy, and finding a new set of frames turned out to be bit easier than expected.  And a lot more expensive than I had originally planned.  ;)

I had a very friendly and helpful salesperson/consultant at the optical shop - in fact, I had two!  I started off trying some "basic" frames just find a good shape and general size, then they started pulling out a bunch of possibilities.  I must have tried at least 30 different frames.  Then "Helen" had an idea, and she went over to a separate display case, and brought back a couple of frames.  They all fit perfectly, and they all looked pretty cool on me too.  Price-wise, they weren't that bad either, so I picked a #1 and #2 pair - with the intent of going ahead and buying two pairs if I felt like it.  That was the "good news".

Then came the "bad news".  Since my prescription is on the high side, I had to get indexed lenses... Which, due to the style of my frames, actually cost just as much as the frames.  *If I wanted the super-high index lenses, they would have ended up costing almost twice as much as the frames.  Well...

I was still thinking of going ahead and buying two pairs of glasses, so I asked the guy what kind of deal they could work out for me.  He crunched some numbers, after which I basically went into sticker shock.  I mentioned some of the deals and coupons they had been advertising, and he re-crunched the numbers.  So... I still ended up spending a lot(!) more money than I had planned today, but come the end of next week, I will have two new pairs of eyeglasses - both titanium, one whole frame in dark brown, one half-frame in copper from EYEFUNC (http://www.eyefunc.eu/) - and I managed to get a pair of standard frame prescription sunglasses with regular plastic lenses thrown in for free(!).

What a full evening of viewing I've had tonight.

I began by watching a PSYCH episode that I had barely started this afternoon. It was the one where a man was convinced a ghost was haunting his house by moving furniture and doing even more dastardly things like trying to burn it down. Good episode and very funny.

The ABC shows which I watched "live" tonight were all at their best. I truly enjoyed every single one of them.

I started with UGLY BETTY. A very entertaining episode, and I literally though my HDTV was going to explode in the first few minutes with all of that supersaturated color. The show is always colorful, but this dream sequence really was something for the ages color-wise.

GREY'S ANATOMY had a very involving episode which I really enjoyed.
