Good morning, all! I have to do a load of laundry today and I have some work at Toyland. I'll be outa here in just a bit.

I haven't worked as a cashier since 1984, but I would swear that at the most I've seen in my entire life maybe  ten or less $2 bills. I haven't seen one in several years now. I'm aware of the plethora of silver dollars at the moment since I get them every time I use one of the US Post Office's postage machines and receive change of more than a dollar.

Neither of the two items, or traveler's checks, gave me much concern as a cashier at Classic Books, and I had to deal with a lot of currency at 48th Street and Sixth Avenue. For me, the biggest problems were the insane store manager who was dismissed for theft (she was literally crazy and responsible for several cashiers being sacked because she continually took money from the till), daily book thieves and the continuous stream of Hasidic Jews from the diamond district who came in to buy pornography.

So, all this tsuris over money for the past two days seems quite alien to me.

My wonderful sister-in-law Jo called me this morning to tell me that my dad's house has been broken into and a squatter has been sleeping there, another reason to get this albatross off our necks. Randy was out yesterday to check on the property and saw signs of a break in so he called the police: someone's been sleeping in the living room so today he has to secure the place and, hopefully, this will push him and the Macbeths to sell the property.

That gets me thinking about the insane store manager of Classic Books who hired me in 1984. She always claimed her illegitimate daughter (who we all suspected was imaginary since there were never photos or phone calls from her) was sired by a famous classical pianist. During my year there, several cashiers were dismissed because of continual shortages in their cash drawers.

About six months after I was there, it was discovered that the manager was involved in illegal activities involving the newly stocked videos. She had been stealing them and wrting up fake invoices, as I recall. It also turned out that she was dipping into cash drawers during the day and replacing the money on payday: the assistant manager was convinced she was having drug problems, which would account for her general demented behavior. I suspect several of the dismissed cashiers had balancing problems because of the manager's borrowing practices; it also wouldn't surprise me if she deliberately set several up for dismissal.

In early 1985, the Drama Book Shop asked me to come back and I left Classic Books. I liked the chain, the managers - even the crazy one who was always friendly and supportive of me - and I liked the job and most of my co-workers. Two of my favorite managers are now with the publisher Norton and with the MTA, both xcellent gentlemen. More for the memoirs.

On the car ride in, I talked my brother about Sugar.  He's totally aware of what's going on, and he's already consulted the breeder for some help and advice.  Since this is Sugar's third home in five(!) months, they're just going to wait a couple more weeks to let her get a bit more settled in her new digs.  Hopefully, she'll be a bit more "mannered" in a month or two.

Interesting "observation" - I could not find an internet signal directly from Amtrak or Union Station here in the terminal.  However, a couple of the restaurants in the main concourse seem to offer free Wi-Fi to their customers - and the people sitting nearby.  ;)

I had a friend that used to order "packs" of $2 bills from his bank.  I think you have to get 100 at a time.  He used to tip at restaurants only in $2 bills.

That reminds me of a little joke.

**DR VIXTER, PLEASE AVERT YOUR EYES!!!**[/color]

So a woman went in to see her doctor.  "Doctor," she said, "my husband just is never in the mood any more!"

The doctor said, "I know just the thing.  Slip one of these little pills into his coffee when he isn't looking, and see if that helps."

So that night at dinner, she tried it.

And darned if it didn't work!  Her husband took a sip of coffee, and suddenly, right there at the table, his eyes popped open and he started to make mad, passionate love to his wife.  Glassware, plates, everything went flying and crashing to the floor.

The next day in the doctor's office, the woman was relating her success to the doctor.  The doctor said, "That's great, but I do feel somewhat responsible...can I at least reimburse you for the broken tableware?"

To which she replied, "Oh, it's OK.  We're not going back to that restaurant, anyway."

I have been listening to the soundtrack to FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL which includes a version of "These Boots Are Made For Walking" in Hawaiian!

DRJOSE seems to have been the only other DR who saw this movie, which certainly had its moments.  And it's a good thing it wasn't in 3-D, the audience might have gotten a bitch slapping.

Today at 2:30 p.m. EST, TCM is showing the Dirk Bogarde version of A TALE OF TWO CITIES, which is wonderful for anyone interested in either...especially if you have only seen the Ronald Colman version.

DR MattH, I think you said something about the team being eliminated not being surprised.
The thing is there are only 5 teams left now (6 before last night's show). So really most teams would not be surprised. However the reason that shannon elizabeth (who got eliminated) was not surprised (even though she had never been in the bottom 2) was because they had already declared everybody else safe. And it as just between her and Jason (the football player who got the highest scores of the night). She knew he got the best scores on monday, plus he is very popular with fans. So i think she knew (and it was fairly obvious) that she was going to be in the bottom 2 (if it was between her and jason).

RE: IDOL, I also thought it was quite dull. And i am done with jason castro.  But i still really like brooke. AND while i agree she seemed nervous in song 1. I liked her song 2. I love it when she plays piano. And i agree with paula. I find that she taps into her vulnerability really well. She makes me like her.

I liked david cook's 2nd song. And david a's second song.

I would suspect it has to be syesha, jason or brooke going. I mean for sure it's not one of the davids.

Last night, after Matt bring up Agatha Christie's missing nine days and my returning with the upcoming story on Doctor Who riffing on those same days ("The Unicorn and the Wasp"), I decided to re-watch the earlier, series three episode that Gareth Roberts wrote, "The Shakespeare Code."  Still enjoyable, even after having seen it a couple of times.  Or four.

Thus, an Ask BK question:

Do you have any favorite writers of series television?  Ones who, when you spot their names in the credits, make you sit up and think "Hey, I bet I'll enjoy this story!"?

Here is my product recommendation of the day.

If you have trouble with your nails. Or if they break a lot. Try this:

http://www.askcosmetics.com

The only product i've tried is the nail conditioner. Although i would love to try some of the other products.  It does come in a tiny little bottle. But boy does it work.

I've not ordered from this site. But this is the company's site (they sell on TSc and QVC).

I've always had relatively long nails. But lately (well before i used this product) i would get one or two nails that would. break every week (from washing pots and cooking ...).

Since i've tried this nail conditioner not a single nail has bent over.

I've seen the lady who developed this product on tv. and she invented it for her horse's nails!

Just thought i'd share in case anyone else was having the same problem as i was!

That's only part of it.  Mainly, it's about a West Hollywood clique finding itself at great odds about admitting a guy named Joe into a group of men named David.

It's a riff on "Heathers".

The artistic hissy fit  is worked into the structure of the story when the Davids take a trip to Italy.  There they meet Giuseppe {Joe) in a museum.  Joe is amused that all the men in the group are named David.  He tells them about the two sculptors' feud concerning their statues of David while they, in turn, reconsider their vain need to continue being, exclusively, the "Davids".

So MR BK - since you didn't get the band you wanted, do you get your salary?  And are they paying royalties/performance fees for THE BRAIN?

The original deal was that they use my salary for two musicians and they match for two more (and, of course, they were always paying for the MD).  When they said it wasn't going to happen, that their board wouldn't match, I still had to put up the salary to have a total of three.  And no, they are not paying royalties -I let them have it for free.  Had I but known...

Not now, as I really don't watch TV at all.  I did enjoy certain writers' contributions on The Sopranos, but I don't really remember the names.  In the old days, the obvious ones were on The Twilight Zone - Rod Serling, Richard Matheson, George Clayton Johnson, etc.

Good Afternoon!

Greetings from Richmond!

-Alas, the train delay out of DC was not announced - and/or discovered(?) until they had boarded everyone.  So, about an hour later...

I also called my parents when I was about a half hour away so that they could pick me up at the train station.  Of course, when my mom picked up her cell phone, they were heading back up 95 to DC for a friend's memorial service...

So... I called a few friends to see if they could pick me up - I really did not want to splurge on a cab, but...

I ended up with a great cabbie - he's originally from NYC, and he had a great story about how his parents "secretly" moved down to Richmond last year, but didn't tell him they had made they were in town for six months!  And the fare was only $16.00.  Not bad at all.  -I was thinking it would be closer to $40.

In any case... I'm here!

:)

I've got to ask why your brother is trusting the opinion of a breeder who sold the puppy too young the first time around?

I hope the breeder at least gave your brother tips on things to do to help Sugar adjust, instead of simply waiting.

I didn't think you came through as an alarmist with your original post.  I think it sweet you care enough to ask questions.

Thanks for the tip.  Your nails may not be bending anymore, but do they still chip or break?

Sorry that's what i meant. They don't break.

I mean that is not to say that they cannot break (i accidently cut one with a knife). Obviously no product will help that. :)

There is also a special file they have that is supposed to help. But i don't have that. They just seem much stronger. And in time it's supposed to make them very healthy.

I will say one thing though. You are not supposed to wear nail polish when starting the treatment. It works better on clean nails.

I would often wear a french manicure (white tips and clear polish) but i have stopped doing that for the month i've been using the product.

Also, they apparently sell a fantastic nail polish remover that doesn't strip your nails like regular ones do.

I realize this sounds funny since i just said that you are not supposed to wear nail polish. But they sell special polish too (which i also don't have).

I was just getting so sick of my nails breaking every week. I don't wash dishes (i use a dishwasher). But still when you have to wash pots and stuff. It was just getting so bad that i would have one or two broken at all times. :(

Evidently it comes in the same "smiley-box" format as the new DVD of How the West Was Won.   ;D

From what I read in the press announcement, only the Blu-ray disc is going to offer HOW THE WEST WAS WON in a smilebox format. The sDVD will be a regular anamorphic transfer only.

I spent the afternoon with DVDs of various INDIANA JONES movies.

I began with finishing the bonus features on the RAIDERS DVD. This involved a documentary on how they accomplished the "melting face" special effect" in that climactic moment of the movie. Very interesting since they didn't have CGI to help them accomplish it back then.

There were a whole bunch of step-through galleries involving the marketing and behind-the-scenes photos of cast and crew at work and at leisure.

And there was a storyboard sequence of the "Well of Souls" sequence with the movie playing in a small window below the storyboard illustrations for the sequence.

Lithia Park looks beautiful....what is the origin of its name?

Actually it is the LOVE of money that is the root of all evil....money itself is divoon.
Well, in that case I'm safe, because I have absolutely no love for those damned two dollar bills.

Next I put in INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM which most everyone (including the creators) considers the least of the INDY movies. I decided to watch the bonus features this afternoon and wait until tonight to actually watch the feature.

Since I've seen the movie countless times, it's not like the bonuses were going to spoil anything.

There was a recently shot introduction to the film by Spielberg and Lucas (about 6 minutes), but the best of the bonuses was a documentary on all the creepy crawlies used in each of the three films and how animal wranglers were helpful (snakes, rats, spiders) or useless (bugs) during the making of the films.

They suggested that the fourth film is going to feature another creepy crawlie not used already in the films, but they didn't go into detail. What could it be? Ants? Preying mantis?

There was also a similar storyboard sequence with this disc - this time, the miner cart chase sequence.

And there were more step-through galleries with promotional materials, stills shot behind the scenes, production design sketches, etc.

I finished my afternoon watching last night's LAW & ORDER: SVU. Robin Williams was the guest star playing a perp about five steps ahead of the police at every turn. Kind of preposterous actually with all the advanced preparations ready to be called on at a moment's notice, but it was still entertaining.

Well, JRAnd, here is a little info on Lithia Park for you!

Lithia Park’s History

Ashland began in the 1800’s as a water-powered sawmill and a flour mill standing on the banks of Ashland Creek. The mill occupied what is now the entrance to Lithia Park. The plaza was a popular meeting spot, where settlers would hitch their horses, trade wheat for flour or purchase lumber.

Early settlers had ties to Ashland County, Ohio and Ashland, Kentucky, hence the town’s name. It became official in 1855 with the opening of the Ashland Mills Post Office.

By 1859 the city had 50 people. Hotels, schools, churches and mills sprang up and during the 1870’s and 1880’s. Ashland grew faster than any town south of Portland. By 1900 there were 3,000 people in Ashland, the largest town in Jackson County at the time.

In the early1900’s, water rich in lithium-now known as Lithia water-bubbled from the town’s fountains. With the help of the Women’s Civic Improvement Club, a park system was developed, including Lithia Park.

The park began with eight acres in 1892 by the Chautauqua Association to bring entertainment and culture to southern Oregon. They built a domed building for their shows, the walls of which now surround the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Elizabethan Theater.

Visitors came from miles around over the next thirty summers to participate in the various attractions offered, and to camp in what was to become Lithia Park.

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival began in 1935 with a three-day summer festival of Shakespearean plays under founding director Angus Bowmer.

The hippies are still in abundance though they are now outnumbered by the New Age folks. There is also a large (for the size of the town) transient population.

Our housing market is effected by the California market, and you know that isn't doing well these days.

As long as we have lived here dogs have not been permitted in the park, even on a leash.  I can understand strict leash laws & pick up laws but not permitting them altogether is beyond me.

I suppose with all rules like this, they happened because of thoughtless dog owners.

Just to give a sense of scale, of course.

When we walk Sherlock in town there are plenty of dogs on the streets.  Unfortunately many of these dogs belong to the transient population & for some odd reason the dogs tend to be aggressive.  For the most part we know which ones to avoid & which people control their dogs.

Yes, I've seen pictures of the "seamless" frames. I have to admit, as nice as that will be, I will kind of miss the seams. That's how I saw Cinerama films back in the day, so I'm used to them looking that way.

Still, the last DVD was not anamorphic but still worlds better than the letterboxed laserdisc, so both the sDVD and Blu-ray should be giant leaps ahead in video quality.

Can't wait; they come out in August.

More for the memoirs?  Like Hell!  There was no sex in that post.  There was drugs, and there was chicanery; but there was absolutely no sex.

"Many A New Day," OKLAHOMA!

That lead-in to Carrie's reprise of "Mr Snow," CAROUSEL

"Western People Funny," KING & I

"Climb Every Mountain," Nun Finale or "How Do You solve A Problem Like Maria?" in SOM, also the Nuns' choral music

Hmm... Although, I have/hate to admit it, I've always found that song sort of annoying.  -But I think that's related to all those over-perky renditions I've come across during auditions.

"Life Upon the Wicked Stage," SHOW BOAT

"Ladies of the Town," BITTER SWEET

"I Can't Do the Sum" or "The Moon Will Help You Out," BABES IN TOYLAND

Opening Act Two, PIRATES OF PENZANCE or "Climbing Over Rocky Mountain"

Which do you hate? Surely not "Many A New Day," one of Rodgers' most wonderful?

Also, "Money Isn't Everything" from ALLEGRO

I need a Women's Ensemble number from a Broadway show.  Right now, all I can think of is "Jeannie's Packing Up" from Brigadoon.  I have duets and trios, but I need a group number.

Anyone?  Anything else?

Money Isn't Everything  from Allegro
My Body  from The Life
Big Spender  from Sweet Charity
Put 'Em Back the Way They Was  from Lil Abner
Overture  from Nine
The Big Dollhouse  from Hairspray
Cell Block Tango  from Chicago
Ride Amazon Ride  from By Jupiter

And now I'm wondering if the gentleman who was sitting next to me has throttled the neck of the woman who was sitting behind him who kept popping and snapping her gun by now - they were both continuing on to North Carolina.  It annoyed me too initially, but then the entertainment value of his under-his-breath comments kicked in. ;)

Is she allowed to carry a gun on the train?

Another friend just sent me this message from the Commercial Closet Association about the "As The World Turns" gay kiss that the American Family Association is upset over:

Dear CCA supporter,

Want advertisers to continue to support gay-friendly programming?

Procter & Gamble, the parent of numerous familiar household product brands, is currently under pressure from anti-gay conservatives for including a same-sex kiss between the characters Noah and Luke who are a couple on the daytime program "As the World Turns." The kiss was a response to previous support by fans who wanted to see the couple kiss again since last September, and even mailed bags of Hershey's chocolate kisses to the CBS studio.

But the American Family Association (AFA) issued an action alert to get its members to contact P&G, the show's producer, to stop future gay affection on the soap: "Procter & Gamble has resumed using explicit, open-mouth homosexual kissing in their soap opera, 'As the World Turns.' P&G decided to include this type of content as a commitment to 'diversity.' Gay activists are hopeful that the P&G effort will desensitize viewers to the homosexual lifestyle and help make the unhealthy and immoral lifestyle more acceptable to society, especially to children and youth."

So P&G has set up a phone voting system to register your support (or disagreement) with the program. It's easy to take action: just dial 800-331-3774. You'll be prompted to press #1 for English. Then press #2 to express your thoughts on "the storyline of As the World Turns." Then you can press #1 to say you support the Luke & Noah storyline.

There's nobody to talk to, you are not asked to identify yourself -- and it takes just a few seconds.

Back from the car place.  He did save me about 10% in discounts which, given the amount of money it cost was not inconsiderable, but it's still a shocking amount plus they added the tax which basically was covered by the discount.  Still, the car is driving as if it were new and they also fixed the rear bumper - I'd clipped a parked car a couple of years ago and the very right side of the bumper was sort of just hanging there like so much fish - they were able to attach it in some way and there was no charge.

Good Evening!

Back from dinner...

I met up with the "boys" at the tail end of their chorus rehearsal, The Richmond Men's Chorus.  It was good seeing them all again, and, of course, Steve too.  A small group of us headed out to Kitchen 64 (http://kitchen64.com/) for a late dinner.  I opted for a blackened Mahi-Mahi sandwich with a side of potato salad. The fish was cooked perfectly, and I only ate about half of a half of the bun.  And only about half of the potato salad - it was good, it was just a huge side-serving.

Sitting a few tables away from us happened to be two(!) Girls Night Out tables.  Let's just say that it's probably not a good idea to sit two ten-tops of alcohol-drinking women in such close proximity to each other.  -Or anyone else.  ;)

Had a lengthy evening of viewing. In fact, I had to search around for something to watch waiting for my program to come on.

I began by watching INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM. Aside from the gross-out sequences with food and bugs, the most irritating thing by far in the movie is Kate Capshaw's character. I know Steven was in love with the actress and found her funny, but I find her so totally annoying and insufferable even after all these years of watching this movie that I just can't stand anything she does in the movie. I didn't remember, however, that for a few moments, "Anything Goes" gets all surreal as if Spielberg was copying Ken Russell's numbers in THE BOY FRIEND. That was weird, too.

I went ahead since I had some extra time and watching the bonus features on INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE.

Again, the bonuses are only fair. There is a panel discussion between the leading ladies of the three Indy features conducted at the AFI. Karen Allen is the most enthusiastic about her character. Capshaw and Alison Doody didn't much like the ladies they played. Capshaw realized she was more annoying than entertaining, and Doody kept saying that Sean Connery had the second lead which normally would have gone to the girl, so she felt her participation was reduced as a result. She kept saying over and over, "Connery had my role."

Oh, no. The whole point was a father and son story, working through their lack of communication and years of mistrust. She was a catalyst toward helping them achieve that, but she wasn't SUPPOSED to be the second lead.

The rest of the features, produced by bk favorite Laurent Bouzereau, followed the same pattern on the other discs: introduction to the movie by Lucas and Spielberg, a storyboarded sequence, four step-through galleries of stills and conceptual art, and a featurette on the friends and enemies of Indy through all three films.

While waiting for my 10 p.m. to come on, I watched a special on Howard Hughes on the NAtional Geographic HD channel. Such a sad, strange man, despite his billions.

Oh, I flipped over right when they announced who was going home on AMERICAN IDOL, so I didn't play back tonight's one hour show. I will likely skim through it tomorrow while waiting for my ride to come pick me up for lunch.

We have tonight off - theater maintenance they call it - a bit odd to have a night off between final dress and first preview, but that's the way they do things.

What is her name?  I wonder if she is my twin I have been hearing about all my life ;)

Actually it's the Bob and Sheri show, but when I looked on the net she doesn't resemble you in the slightest.  It's just the photo with your hair, about your build and sunglasses that reminds me of you

Since it is Ask BK Day... And since I'm drawing an almost total blank right now...

I need a Women's Ensemble number from a Broadway show.  Right now, all I can think of is "Jeannie's Packing Up" from Brigadoon.  I have duets and trios, but I need a group number.

Anyone?  Anything else?

"A Hard Candy Christmas" from Best Little Whorehouse in Texas

Well, I'm pretty much packed. I'm flying from Sioux City and my flight doesn't leave until 10:53 AM (Northwest Airlines) then I go to Minneapolis where my friend Pam will be getting on the same flight to LaGuardia.  We get there shortly before 5:00 PM

Go first - then you can put a luxury spin on "Feed The Birds".

"Go First" can be in addition to "Go After"
