Title: UNO DE MAYO
Post by: bk on April 30, 2008, 11:44:44 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were numero uno de Mayo, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - for them it's still April and they're asking to hold the Mayo, or is it the Moo-o.

Good morning, all! I am up early because I have a lot to accomplish today.  First Toyland, then NYPL, andthen back here to continue my notes on the score for Lady of the Slipper.  I believe there may be some working coming my way this weekend so I want to clear my schedule for it.

I have nothing else to report. This is a travel day for both DRs cillaliz and JoseS so travel vibes are in order[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]

I first saw BAMBI MEETS GODZILLA on a midnight showing of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and SCHLOCK at the Victory Theatre in Dayton, OH, around 1974.  About 10 of Macbeth's friends, his first wife, and I went to see it and we all got terribly wasted. We got home sometime around 4 am, as I recall.

Tra la! It's May, the lusty month of May!
That lovely month when ev'ryone goes blissfully astray
Tra la! It's here, that shocking time of year!
When tons of wicked little thoughts merrily appear

It's May! It's May, that gorgeous holiday
When ev'ry maiden prays that her lad will be a cad!
It's mad! It's gay, a libelous display
Those dreary vows that ev'ryone takes, ev'ryone breaks
Ev'ryone makes divine mistakes
The lusty month of May!

Whence this fragrance wafting through the air?
What sweet feelings does its scent transmute?
Whence this perfume floating ev'rywhere?
Don't you know it's that dear forbidden fruit!
Tra la, tra la, that dear forbidden fruit!
Tra la la la la - Tra la la la la
Tra la la la la - Tra la la la la
Tra la - Tra la
Tra la - Tra la
Tra la la la la la la la la la la la

La la! It's May, the lusty month of May!
That darling month when ev'ryone throws self-control away
It's time to do a wretched thing or two
And try to make each precious day one you'll always rue

It's May! It's May, the month of "Yes, you may"
The time for ev'ry frivolous whim - proper or "im"
It's wild! It's gay, a blot in ev'ry way
The birds and bees with all of their vast amorous past
Gaze at the human race aghast
The lusty month of May!

Tra la! It's May, the lusty month of May
That lovely month when ev'ryone goes blissfully astray
Tra la! It's here, that shocking time of year
When tons of wicked little thoughts merrily appear

It's May! It's May, the month of great dismay
When all the world is brimming with fun, wholesome or "un"
It's mad! It's gay, a libelous display
These dreary vows that ev'ryone takes, ev'ryone breaks
Ev'ryone makes divine mistakes
The lusty month of May

I was out of deodorant, and the brand I like seems to have discontinued the particular version that I like in the "unscented" variety, so I thought I'd try one of the scented versions.

This morning was my first experience with "Powder Fresh," and it will be my last.  The scent is obnoxious and it is driving me to distraction!   Ugh!!

As a child I absolutely loved this short, and I still like it a lot. (Current releases on VHS and DVD have altered the ending.)

As an adult I have veered more to DONALD IN MATHMAGICLAND.

I also love Disney's first forays into nature documentaries with the short True-Life Adventures like NATURE'S HALF ACRE, WATER BIRDS, etc. The feature length renditions of this were fabulous, but they started as shorts and are still fun to watch.

I swear I don't know how it's possible, but whatever tummy ailment BK had/has seems to have migrated north to Oakland as my tummy is unsettled and just a yitbit queasy.

What's a "yitbit" you may ask yourself...or no one, in particular?

For a couple of summers in high school, I worked for my father during summer vac.  At that time, he had a small home improvement company.  One of the "day laborers" (DL) on the work crew to which I was assigned had a speech impediment.  Whenever he was assisting the chief carpenter in framing something, or lining up a piece of lumber, the two would engage in a rather odd exchange of information which included the two words "a little bit".  "Move it a little bit to the right (or left)"  is what you would expect to hear.

Mr. Heaton, the carpenter (who always seemed to have precisely one drop of perspiration languishing on  the tip of his nose) was a colorful character.  Among his pet phrases was "I'm satisfied..."  as in "I'm satisfied it's going to be a hot day today;"  "I'm satisfied that lunch will taste mighty good today;" and "I'm satisfied that we'll get XXXXX done before quittin' time."

Anyway...Heaton and this DL (whose name eludes me, but was very appropriate to him) would speak in what seemed like a code.  Heaton would ask, "Do I need to come to you?" (meaning, of course, should I slide the board a little bit your way?).  DL would reply "Yitbit".  Or Heaton would ask if he left enough room for something.  DL would say "Yitbit".

For the longest time -- you'll be amazed, I'm sure --  I never associated "Yitbit" with "a little bit" but allowed myself to fancy it was some strange carpenter/DL "speak."

Did I go on too long and stray off the topic here?  Yitbit!

For Lorna Luft fans....my buddy Charles Bloom (former child actor, current playwrite and song writer and son of my interviewee, actress Carolyn Kearney) sent me this notice. I am posting it here as it seems like something some of you might find interesting:

Friends:

As you’ll recall from a few past e-mails, my work is often played on the popular Musical Theatre radio program, BROADWAY AT BEDTIME which originates in Melbourne, Australia. The host is performer, pianist and director, Will Conyers.

Tonight’s show is, indeed, a special one. Will’s in-studio guest will be Lorna Luft. She’ll be recounting, among other things, many memories about life with her mother, Judy Garland, and will be discussing her new cd, SONGS MY MOTHER TAUGHT ME.  .

The show will air at 10pm tonight (NYC time) and 7pm in Los Angeles.

During the broadcast, two of my songs, WHAT’S A WOMAN TO DO? and IT IS WHAT IT IS (from the musical, PABLO) will be played and I’m extending you an invitation to listen in. It should be a fun, insightful show and, needless to say, I’m flattered that Will is sharing my work with Ms. Luft and have it heard alongside so many venerable classics.

Tuning in is easy. Just go to the stations’ website: www.joy.org.au

Click on “Listen”. Then go to one of the 4 systems by which to connect.

The 2nd one listed, REALPLAYER, should be the most compatible with computers. If not, try one of the other 3. After that, in about 20 seconds, you’ll be connected and will hear the show.

So, if any of you free at 10 tonight with a couple of hours to bend an ear, I think you’re ears will thank you, as will Will, as well. :) - For further information, go to the BAB website: www.broadwayatbedtime.com

Feel free to forward this e-mail to anyone whom you think would enjoy the show. Hope you are all happy, busy and productive…or, at least 2 of those 3.

As Ever,

Charlie

This morning was my first experience with "Powder Fresh," and it will be my last.  The scent is obnoxious and it is driving me to distraction!   Ugh!!

That's weird. I am allergic to perfume and highly sensitive ot deodorant. But powder fresh (lady speed stick) is one of the only ones i can stand. I really love it.

re: last night's AMERICAN IDOL

Last night's "American Idol" result was mildly disappointing.  It should have been a "guy" going home.

That he wasn't "bottom two" simply repulses me.

I know exactly what you mean. It's one thing if he'd at least be in the bottom (since he's sucked the past few weeks - we're talking about jason). But for him to not be in the bottom at all when he has been bad is very odd. I just really hope that brooke's fans do not drift towards him. I will say that i am quite surprised that syesha is still around. She has been in the bottom quite a few times.  I was very sad to see brooke go.  Now my only hope is david cook.

I, too, am looking forward to some decent TV this evening.  It's a BIG night for my TV-viewing tastes, with two programs on the WB ("Smallville" and "Supernatural"), three programs on ABC ("Ugly Betty", "Gray's Anatomy" and "Lost") and one program on CBS ("Survivor").  I've given up on CSI, plain and simply.  It's gotten stale, IMO.

I don't watch NBC Thursdays any more...not since "Friends" ended, actually.  I have watched episodes of all the NBC comedies on Thursdays and each left me oddly unamused.  Not one of them is a patch on "Friends" or "Frasier" or even "Seinfeld."

Lest anyone be concerned, my book-to-be will not be about either of those David Cooks and will also not be about the "American Idol" contestant David Cook.

No, my David Cook will be a fictional (based loosely upon two-and-a-half other people) David Cook.

Quote
The Indiana Congressional Candidate the GOP Wishes Would Go Away

On the face of it, Tony Zirkle looks like the perfect candidate for Congress: He attended the Naval Academy, he has a degree from Georgetown, and he went on to be a top prosecutor in Indiana, crusading against Internet pornography.

There’s only one problem — or maybe more than one, as far as the Indiana Republican Party is concerned.

Zirkle, who is seeking the GOP nomination for the state’s 2nd Congressional District, believes — among other things — that whites are victims of a "genocide," that the races should be segregated into different states and that pornography is a Jewish plot against women.

"We’d love for him to disappear — not for the sake of our party but for his own sake," said Jay Kenworthy, communications director for the Indiana GOP.

On top of all that, Zirkle accepted an invitation to address a group of swastika-wearing, Sieg-Heiling Nazi party members at a celebration of what would have been Adolf Hitler’s 119th birthday on April 20 in Chicago — birthday cake and all.

Coffin Couches

Looking for a heavy-duty couch, say something constructed from 18 gauge steel that can handle up to 900 lbs. Then a recycled Coffin Couch might be what you're looking for. Collected from local funeral homes primarily in Southern California, health and safety laws prohibit the reselling of coffins as once a human body is placed in a coffin it is considered biohazard tissue. The six cast iron heavy duty legs are embossed with the universal biohazard insignia to keep you informed where exactly you're sitting. Impress your goth friends and pick one up for $3,500 US. (Shipping might be a little expensive).

So, as some of you may remember, three-and-a-half years ago when I moved into the new home environment, I bought me a new state-of-the-art 65" Mitsubishi DLP TV.  When I purchased it I already HAD a widescreen HD ready TV.  THAT beast was already outmoded, I was told, because it didn't have HDMI inputs, which somehow had taken over the world since I'd bought the beast.  So, I carefully asked if this was it, if this was truly HD and would work with all that was coming, including high-def DVD.  I was assured it was.  So, guess what?  Now I'm told it isn't.  Now I'm told that I'm only good enough for 1080i when 1080p is now the ticket.  So, they were full of crap.  I've got an i instead of a p and I am pissed with a p and irked with an i.  They knew this was coming - they didn't just invent it out of the blue.  Yes, a Blu-Ray player will upconvert to p but that isn't the same as BEING a p.

So, even if I wanted to do Blu-Ray, now I won't.  And if anyone who bought this same TV three years ago feels the same sort of annoyance, they'll lose those sales, too.    Bravo.

Good Afternoon!

Greetings from New York City!

The car ride to the airport was very uneventful.  Although, initially, my father thought I was taking the train back up to NYC; luckily, the first part of the route is the same to either place.  The lines at the airport were non-existent, and since I had only gotten there about an hour before my flight left, I didn't have to long to wait after going through security.  The flight itself was very nice too, and there were some great segments on The New York Times channel on the in-plane TVs.  Once I got to JFK, there was the usual unusually long wait for the baggage to get from the plane to the terminal, but once it did, my bag was the third one on the carousel.  And, then since I really didn't feel like riding in a subway train for an hour and a half, I went ahead and splurged on a cab ride home.  -Thankfully, the fare from JFK into Manhattan is a mandated and regulated flat fee.

All in all, a very good travel day.  Thanks again for all the Vibes.

And since I've been home, I've been to the bank, picked up my dry cleaning, made a run to Whole Foods, made a smoothie, and even washed some dishes.  And in an hour or so, I think I'm going to head to gym, although, with the weather the way it is today, I'm actually thinking a lap or two around the Reservoir may be in order.  However, rain is in the forecast for this afternoon, so... Ah, well...

DR Singdaw....isn't "powder fresh" more of a woman's scent?

Well if they have it for men then some men must like it! :)

I guess it sort of smells like baby powder (which i like the smell of).

For me buying deodorant is a chore. Sometimes my mom will pick up an extra for me if there is a sale.  But i almost always have to refuse it. The powder fresh is one of the only ones i can stand!

IT IS WHAT IT IS.  Isn't that a song  from LaCage?

Bravo.

bk, I'm not sure if you're kidding or not, but I doubt seriously if you'd be able to tell ANY difference between 1080i and 1080p. Blu-ray (and HD-DVD) players as well as upconverting standard DVD players can all scale to 720p, 1080i, (and the most recent) to 1080p. In other words, the players can scale exactly to match what the resolution of your TV is. High def is high def, and unless you're sitting five feet or so from your TV screen, your eye simply would not be able to discern any difference at all.

You can get 1080p-1080i-720p (all high definition resolutions) through the component inputs on your TV. If you want high def, you can have it.

I just had a very strange computer experience (and one that didn't involve DR Coleslaw).  I went to AOL Search to look up something about that city in Ohio that starts with a "C" (C*******d).  it brought up the results for me, but when I went to close it, it opened a second window for the same thing.  And when I went to close that it opened a third window and then a fourth window, and then a fifth, etc.; until it had opened sixteen search windows.  I felt like Mickey Mouse in THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE.  I finally just shut down the whole computer, because nothing else worked.  It was very weird.

I actually like the design...but the price is more than a little out of my range.

I cannot say I have had such an experience in recent times, but there have been anomalies (oh, yes! Anomalies!) in which tons of things once popped up and took over for a moment or so.  This was years ago before I learned (the hard way) of the advantages of Norton.

These have never been used.  Here's what their website (http://coffincouches.com/) says (the bold is mine):

We at Coffincouches.com have the mindset of thinking "Green" and we know it is different but we strongly believe in recycling. Our niche happens to be 18 gauge steel coffins which we collected from local funeral homes primarily in Southern California. It is a health and safety law that funeral homes cannot resell used coffins to the general public. We approached funeral directors with the attitude of recycling. These coffins are not used for burial due to slight cosmetic inconsistencies. They are reconfigured and modified resulting in a finished product - a unique one a kind coffin couch.

The other day I asked about ADDING MACHINE & INTO THE HEIGHTS.  I expected at least one New Yorker to have a comment?  I'm thinking my post was missed and tickets need to be purchased.

I think you just asked about the shows yesterday... In any case...

DRs elmore and FJL just saw The Adding Machine - and commented about it - and liked it.  I saw the show a couple of weeks ago, and liked it to.  It's definitely not something "traditional", so...

As for In The Heights... It's a good show.  Very high energy, very Latin, very New York - and for some people, very loud.  I'd suggest going t the show's website (http://www.intheheightsthemusical.com/) and listening and viewing some of the clips.

Here are the NYTimes reviews for each show:

In The Heights (http://theater2.nytimes.com/2008/03/10/theater/reviews/10heig.html?adxnnl=1&adxnnlx=1209689445-wZGRVQ5hC2QMGxn3VFuyMg)

I will pass along your comments and the reviews.  Again, thank you.

Anyhow he is still on DANCING WITH THE STARS. HE hurt his arm dancing this week and has to have an operation. But his doctor said it could wait till after the show is over.

Which one did you have?  The first three sound great, no so the rest of the fillings.

Unfortunately, there's not a Killer Brownie flavor I don't like.  The Blonde Ambition is my least fav, only because I'm not fond of macadamias.  The bite I had today was Original.

One of my favorite things to do for a potluck dinner is to buy one of each flavor.  Since they're rectangular, I cut the end off to make a square and leave the ends for Richard.  Then I cut each square in quarters and put them in mini muffin papers and arrange them randomly on a tray.  Always a hit, both at home and at the party!

It doesn't say they aren't used, it says they were not used for burial - that is not the same thing.

I just got back from choir rehearsal, and... WHEW!

I think I got just as good a workout as DR JoseSPiano, waving my arms conducting Kenyan music.  The choir is finally starting to get the words, which I spent 2.5 hours this afternoon writing out phonetically in their scores.  And then we added percussion ad libitum, and it sounded pretty decent!  :D

...And what's even more amazing is that the show is more or less customized according to each boy's strengths (and "weaknesses").  The keys of the solos are changed, if needed, for each young man, and even the dance combinations will be "individualized".  Basically, there will be three variations of the show each week.  -I will not envy the music/pit librarian for this show... Or the conductor.

That sounds like a nightmare for all the musicians!  And then what if for some reason they have to change Billy's in mid-show?    :P

Had a full night of viewing.

I began with last night's BOSTON LEGAL. DR Elmore's favorite Christine Ebersole was on; naturally Denny Crane (Shatner) was hot for her.

Shelley Berman and Henry Gibosn played dotty old judges in the two cases that were part of the show last night.

I thought about watching LOST, but decided to switch to TVLAND where Lucy and Ricky were doing a television show for Phipps Department Store, and then Lucy was doing a tango with Raggedy Ricky for the MGM brass.

Also watched STEP IT UP AND DANCE for the first time....saw the building that DR JOSE talks about quite often here and in his blog....and was completely satisfied with the person they sent home tonight, even though I had only spent about 30 television minutes with him.

good evening from NYC!!  We got to our hotel about 6:00 and immediately ran down to the cocktail party that was included in our fee for the seminar. It was at the New York Lawyer's Club on Vesey Street. After a number of free adult beverages, my artist friend, Trevor Goring and I took off looking for a place to eat. It was raining but we didn't care. We wound up at the Lafayette Bar and Grill (I don't think I spelled that right) they were having a grand opening for their new Salsa music nights complete with live music and a salsa dance company.  It was wonderful.  We had a great time.  We left there and got caught in a downpour so even though it wasn't far, we cabbed back to the hotel

The view from our room is incredible!! We're on the 33rd floor looking out over the Hudson. The view of the Statue of Liberty is blocked, but you can see Ellis Island and the Jersey Shore.   There is a lighted neon clock directly across the river from us, does anyone know what that is?

Back from our first public preview for about nine people.  Why they didn't call the cast or me when they knew it was this lite, and ask us to DO something about it is something I'll never understand, but then there are many things about this particular experience I'll never understand.  In any case, the nine people were quite loud laughers and seemed very appreciative and that was great.  What was not great was the sound.  More about it in the notes, but know that your ever-lovin' bk had to throw a bit of a hissy fit.
