Well, you've read the notes, the notes returned, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - I have no idea what the HELL the cows are doing right now and I'm not even going to speculate.

DVD is blank, tho I'll be watching BLOOD IN THE WIRE on Sun, and HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER on mon. Car CD has been alternating PRIMROSE, some Peggy Lee twofer re-issues, and yesterday added a new Naxos by Morton Gould, JEKYLL AND HYDE and the FALL RIVER BALLET; The Jekyll is what to my untrained ear sounds'atonal', but the Fall River comes across as "Coplandesque", so I am enjoying the heck out of that . Acc to the notes, it's the Ist time Fall River has been recorded complete(as opposed to a suite) and the Naxos price(7.99) is unbeatable(I dont own any Naxos stock)

All Saturn themes -- responsibility, focus and logic, structure and form, rules and regulations, executive authority, professional matters, practicality and pragmatism, old karma, fear and stress, time, contractions and restrictions, and chronic conditions (medical or otherwise) - are highlighted today and over the weekend. One way to utilize a Saturn station to your benefit is to learn from respected teachers and mentors. Sink your teeth into profound studies for several hours this evening.

I've never had a mint julep

In 1971, when I was on the Miami University Library staff, I had a great student assistant, Bob Kirby, who stood about 5'9" or so, weighed around 140 lbs, and had a huge, enormous afro, so from a distance he looked like a walking mushroom. He lived in a tri-level house with 5 or 6 other students, including a married couple, and a very pretty theatre student, Betty Something, whose last name I've now forgotten.  It's too bad because Betty was a very free spirit of limited intellect who was constantly in hot water, especially in class or at work, for her outrageous public displays of untainted natural ignorance. Each student had a room, and it's my memory that Betty's room was the entire basement.

Kirby and I pondered for several months about the nature of the mint julep; they seemed a staple of southern gothic literature and a cliche of lazy rich southern life and we wanted to know what a julep was like: how it was made, how it tasted, when it was served, etc.  So on a Friday evening, Spring 1971, Kirby and Betty invited me to dinner.  When I got there, Kirby told me Betty was out roaming neighborhood gardens in search of mint to "borrow" for the juleps and had no idea when she would be back.  She soon arrived with lots of fresh mint, much more than we'd ever need, and spent some time pounding much of it to a pulp. The other roommates were there, except for the husband of the wife who was doing most of the cooking with Kirby (pork, as I recall).

As the wife was setting the table, she said to me, "when my husband gets here, we'll have fresh flowers for the table." And I said, "That's nice. Does he work for a florist?"

She answered, "He's a gravedigger."

I have no memory of the juleps now, so I'm sure they were quite uneventful, as was the dinner.  I believe Kirby now lives in the Seattle area and I have no idea if Betty ever graduated from college. My last memory is that she worked box office for a summer theatre and was finally sent to work in the shop because the tickets were so screwed up.

Thanks to singdaw (that card was hot! :) ), and to Ben (looking forward to seeing you and Ant too!, and to Jrand (I was born under the sign of Tsouris), and to that New York Cilla girl, and to TCB (whom I'll get to meet for the first time during my natal month), and to elmore for the lovely lively e-card.

Did I miss anyone?  Our office party is today, nothing to do with my birthday, so I may have to go back later and make sure I didn't miss anyone in my thanks.

I had scheduled a card to be sent to Fred, and then I found one I liked better. So, I canceled the first and sent the second, only I didn't realize that, since it was no longer scheduled for his birthday, it would be sent that day.  As a result Fred got his e-card on Monday! Plus an explanatory email and a second card for today. Oy!

We'll be preparing down to the minute tomorrow afternoon, so if you can avoid getting here before 5:30, that would be GREAT!

(Hmmm..is that a nice way of saying we won't be ready before 5:30?  But we will be totally reday  AT 5:30!!!!)

Since someone asked, Skip is doing the party for the HHW-ers as part of his present to me BUT BUT BUT the party is because of Cilla being in town, has nothing to do with my natal weekend.  Hope that makes sense.  As of now, it's Cilla, Ant, Ben, elmore, Jose, Julie (who will arrive a bit late after her appointment), Lois (a friend who is is from Berkeley), and Skip and me.

Have vixmom and vixter been on here and seen the invite, by the way?

Today I'll probably watch SUPERNATURAL while I'm cooking and eating lunch. Then, I'll be back to the reviewing chores with THE FIRES WITHIN. I've never seen this Louis Malle film, but have heard so many wonderful things about it that I'm really eager to see it.

There look to be a fair number of bonus features on the disc, too, so it'll likely keep me occupied most of the day until prime time TV tonight.

I forgot to mention it on Thursday but actor Van Hansis who plays gay teen Luke on AS THE WORLD TURNS did indeed garner an Emmy nomination for his performance. He was also nominated last year and didn't win, much to the surprise of many in the industry, so I'll be looking forward to how he fares in this year's contest.

There's simply nothin' better than sitting out on the verandah sipping a tall, cold mint julep.  The mint adds that nice cool "minty" internal rush to the taste buds and the julep quietly hammers you into complacency until you start "never mindin'" the heat and humidity and gnats.

Never underestimate the power of gothic references!   ;)

My only wish is that Parvati and Amanda had cast their votes for Natalie instead of Alexis.  Amanda was right:  Alexis was no threat of any kind (except a vote).  I'm thinking Parvati "might" need Natalie to do her bidding at some point and that Alexis was less reliable.

I enjoyed seeing Erik squirm when Amanda put him on the spot during tribal council. And it was interesting to see the jurors' react affirmatively when she told Erik she had helped him during the merger and that now, when she needed his help, he had nothing to offer.  Score one for Amanda, who is now my favorite.

Kids!  I don't know what's wrong with these kids today!

Kids! Who can understand anything they say?

Kids! They are disobedient, disrespectful oafs!

Noisy, crazy, dirty, lazy, loafers!

And While we're on the subject:

Kids! You can talk and talk till your face is blue!

Kids! But they still just do what they want to do!

Why can't they be like we were,

Perfect in every way?

What's the matter with kids today?

DR Miss Karen, whatever became of Boo-key? He never writes, he never calls . . .

Good news! He was accepted into UCLA for next fall, just got the letter a few days ago -- their theatre department to finish up his BA. So he's been busy with school related stuff (20 hours of some general ed classes and a stage craft course there at LACC that he can transfer over) and filling out some scholarship applications (the UCLA Alumni Assoc. invited him to apply for one of their merit scholarships, and he just got notice that he is getting one from the Worth Foundation), etc. etc.  So my Boo-Key Bear is going to be a Boo-Key Bruin.  Once the dust settles, I'm sure we'll hear from the little stranger more often...

I just spoke to Cilla, as she was "elevatoring" (I know that's not a word) and we're meeting for dinner at the retro and fun

Chat and Chew (http://chatnchew.ypguides.net/)

We went there last time and liked it so much we're going again.

Yeah, with the weather so crummy a boat ride around Manhattan tonight sounds a little soggy.

Can't wait.   I looked at the tickets and it's a DJ dance cruise from 9 PM to 12 AM... not really my cup of tea on a cool damp evening.  I took the tickets to the meeting and within 2 minutes was able to give them to a couple of the vendors exhibiting stuff that were VERY thrilled to be able to go.  I'm glad someone will be using them and I am glad it isn't me  ;D

RE: SURVIVOR (not about last night's show).

DR MBarnum said he could not tell the difference between Parvati (sp?) and Amanada.

It's funny i've never had a problem. But probably mostly because i remember them from their original seasons. Amanda was the one from last season. And Parv was from the season with ozzy and jonathan.

Amanda is the one who had been sucking face with ozzy all this season (my sis says they are still a couple). And Parv was the one who got switched to the other tribe and made that deal with natalie and alexis. She is the one who turned on ozzy 2 weeks ago.

Thank you, JRAND. I wonder if HHW qualifies as "profound studies"?

RE: the daytime emmys.

I love soaps. But some of the people nominated are not the best.

I don't really like the system they have to nominate people (the cast of each show selects the candidates). And i don't really like that people vote based only on 3 shows.

To me there are actors who are fantastic (christian leblanc who plays michael on Y&R for example). Yet he did not have any really great storylines this year. But i don't think the people voting even really watch the show. They only base it on the 3 episodes they are given.

So really if an actor has a great storyline, and if the fans know they are excellent that year, it really doesn't mean they will win. Plus the period of shows that are eligible are so far in advance of now, it's hard to even remember that stuff even happened!

I like the idea of a birthday party! What fun

I do believe that Bravo should change the title of "Step It Up and Dance" to "Nelly Queens Having hissy Fits." Did our flouncing Italian diva Oscar who was bounced last night have any room to throw rocks?

I wish the cameras would stay on the dancers and stop cutting to the judges as if they should be seen enjoying or cringing at what they're watching so the audience will know what's good or bad.

But where does the one with jack and kate with the plane overhead (the finale from last season). Was that before the other 2 i mentioned. Or after the other 2?

I liked last night's show. But it wasn't one of my favorites. I wasn't as riveted to my seat as i have been the past few episodes.
There were some interesting developments. I loved charlotte and jin (her speaking korean). I loved hurley telling jack that charlie said jack should not raise aaron. I liked seeing kate in the shower. I liked kate saying she was doing something for sawyer (i am curious to know what it is). Claire going off with her dad (and jack's) was sort of creepy. Is that the last we'll see of her???

I really liked Norman Paris' orchestrations and the incidental music.

And, while I've been thinking about "Step Up and Dance," is Elizabeth Berkely channeling Padma on TOP CHEF? I find her inflections very similar.

That was my initial thought (that the airport scene comes after the other 2 flashforwards). Because jack is losing it and turns to drinking. However the things that were said during that meeting seemed sort of off to me (to happen after the others).  If jack and kate had been engaged, well the way they related to each other in the finale just didn't seem off to me. But the part that really confuses me is jack saying that he had been flying and using the special deal to fly every week. To me that seemed like something he would say and feel right after returning from the island. Not years later (aaron was much bigger in last night's show).

Just heard from the theater and the sound designer will be there at eleven to hopefully fix everything.  Part of the problem is that like a lot of small theaters, their sound system isn't really designed to handle fifteen cast mics plus the band and they simply maxed out their system and were doing things to just get through.  My suggestion was to take three of the cast mics and the Brain Tap chair mic and free up those channels and use them for the band, to create a nice stereo mix.  The three actors are Rod (only sings in the ensemble numbers and the actor projects very well), General Mills (certainly doesn't need a mic), and Private Partz (though he sings in the ensemble numbers, he has no dialogue whatsoeve).  And the Brain Tap chair mic has been sort of useless and it's a small theater and we haven't had any trouble hearing the mark.  So, we're hoping that will do the trick.

Is that the last we'll see of her???
ajfdkjdafjdlaf9f07 87fafuj87r4e89r798r798 87f97d98f7df7d998798

Well, to be accurate, Hurley said that Charlie said Jack is not supposed to "raise him."   Even though Hurley had asked Jack if he was living with Kate and Aaron -- and that could be Hurley trying to understand the message he has to relay to Jack --, Charlie's message -- which Hurley had written down -- did not specifically state/necessarily mean that "him" was "Aaron", IMO.   I think it "might" be one of those red herrings.  There are any number of meanings of "raise him" -- dig him up/disinter him, promote him, get him on the phone, etc.  I know that's a "yitbit" of a stretch, but I take nothing for granted with this show.  Sometimes, I know for a fact, the writers hint at something to get the viewers to believe something will happen.  And then it happens. It may be that "him" is Aaron.

I think it interesting to point out here that last night, when Kate was forced to account for her activities (a very bad move on Jack's part, I thought), she said she was doing something for "him."  I wonder how many other people thought "him" was Ben?  Of course, she clarified in her next comment that it was Sawyer...but for a moment, and because she seemed so uncomfortable about it, I feared she was working for Ben.

As for your earlier question about a chronology for the flash-forwards:  During the trial, Jack was seemingly straight (off the pills and liquor) and productive once again.  We know that Kate invited him to visit and that Jack had not yet been there to see Aaron.  (Also interesting last night was his comment to Kate about "HER" not being a blood relation to Aaron.  Aaron, of course, is Jack's nephew, but we haven't seen anything about Jack learning Claire is/was his half-sister).  And the scene at the airport has Jack in very bad shape AGAIN and declaring that they all must go back.

That said, and if you force me to make a guess, I'm almost certain the airport scene belongs at the end of the chronology, thus far, because that's the first time we've seen Jack believing he ought to go back to the island.  And if he has walked out on Kate and Aaron, it would also fit that she would have been reluctant to meet him and that he has descended, again, into addictive behaviors.

Listening to my reissue of Subways Are For Sleeping.  What a great score and what a great-sounding album, most of which is due to the superb producing of Goddard Lieberson.  If anyone hasn't gotten this, I have copies I can sell.

BK, I'm just curious...do you remember how many numbered editions of this title were sold?  I got #130.

Well, one of the first of many rather inane decisions the new head of a company I created did was to forget about the numbering and just sell it as a standard CD release, thereby spitting in the face of all who thought they were getting the numbered, limited edition.  I know we numbered 5000 of them by hand.  The ones I have are all numbered.  When you do that to your customer base, you are on the way to nowhere, at least as I see it.

Soon I will start to get ready for a meal and our final preview - I'll be getting to the theater at six and before we begin the show I'll be hearing what will hopefully be a new and improved band mix, along with a new and improved overall sound.

I'll tell you why I never invested in Lost - because of Alias.  I became a watcher of that show, and then after season two, Mr. Abrams left and the show abused the trust I put in it with a series of incredibly stupid blunders and by the end of it it was so far afield from the way it began I was irked beyond repair, so irked, in fact, that I have never seen the final episode.

Granted that BIG mistakes were made with ALIAS. I don't know anyone who was a big fan of that show who thought anything except the show went downhill after the first two years.

Isn't it possible, however, that people could learn from their mistakes and do better the next time out? Is it reasonable to hold mistakes against people forever?

Honestly, I wasn't being snide in my comment. LOST is one of the more remarkable achievements of TV in the last decade, and the Emmys and the AFI and the Peabodys certainly have thought so.

One of my colleagues in the Packard Humanities Institute project keeps telling me I have to start writing it down.

I think you need to get yourself a video camera (calm down MBarnum) and a tripod, and instead of writing them down, plunk yourself down in a chair with the camera focused on you and recount your stories on film.  Some day we will edit them all together and release it as an art house film.

'LOST' SPOILAGE!  BEWARE!Well, to be accurate, Hurley said that Charlie said Jack is not supposed to "raise him."   Even though Hurley had asked Jack if he was living with Kate and Aaron -- and that could be Hurley trying to understand the message he has to relay to Jack --, Charlie's message -- which Hurley had written down -- did not specifically state/necessarily mean that "him" was "Aaron", IMO.

Oh, well....dlkl;kjlkjl kajdflkjaelijasoitj;lkglkjasgkljae;ilru;lkjdflkj sadlfkjasd;lkj;ljkfdlj;kdfklj;sk slapshot snapshot splatsnot kskj;lkajfklja;lrkj;lk slkjas;lgkj;likj lkj ;lak.

I don't believe that is necessarily correct.

I believe that folks can make their choices.  But, given that I've seen every episode as aired, it is a major loss for anyone who loves great storytelling and is willing to invest some time into letting the story get told.

There are four more guaranteed seasons during which "Lost" will complete its arc.  It's unprecedented for any media, including television.

I think you need to get yourself a video camera (calm down MBarnum) and a tripod, and instead of writing them down, plunk yourself down in a chair with the camera focused on you and recount your stories on film.  Some day we will edit them all together and release it as an art house film.

singdaw will understand it.  It's what "we" do.  We exchange "comments."

It's like your comment about his preferring to be called b***h.

My comment was about his personal experience of having a prom dress removed.

Okay, now I understand.  Thank you.

Okay, then I will ask him.  I didn't realize we were speaking in code on this site.

Perhaps I'm simply confused, Tom.

You made a remark about his statement about the Prom dress.

I made a remark about his same statement.  Mine was snarky, as usual, and implied he has personal experience wearing and then not wearing a prom dress.  My implication was that he went to prom in a dress and took it off at every turn.

Thus, quoting his "Off like a prom dress" remark, I further remarked I'd forgotten he had such experiences.

Sydney Chaplin, Carol Lawrence and Phyllis Newman, who won her Tony Award for this role; the score by Comden/Green/Styne is truly delightful!  Buy one from BK, DR TCB!

Poor Sherlock did not have a good day & now his tummy is upset.  First he couldn't understand why we didn't feed him breakfast or give him any treats.  Then we took him, and left him at that place where they do unpleasant things to him (aka the vet office).

Two hours later he was home & spent the rest of the day sleeping until the UPS guy came, at which point he stomped on my foot in order to bolt out the door.  He took the longest pee I have ever seem him do. ;D

The purpose of the visit was that the super hard chewer had two teeth that needed bonding.  The vet, a dental expert, said not bonding them could cause problems later.  While he was out for the dental work two skin tabs were removed, one by his eye & one under his lower lip.

The current leader of my book group has given us an assignment:

“Be thinking of some authors that you might be interested in reading either slightly older like Hemingway or more Modern, like Updike”

Any suggestions?

If they choose any of the Updike RABBIT books I will not re-read them.  Disliking them as I do, what are the chances I will like any of his other novels?

The Book Launch was very cool.  The K2 Lounge at the Rubin Museum is a great space, and since they had a couple of events there tonight - including a sold out performance by Nellie Mackay - there was quite a good crowd there tonight.  There was no formal book signing "process" due to the way the room was arranged - the table where the authors were was on one side, and the "press area" with the free "tastings" was on the other side of the room.

The "tastings" were also strangely distributed.  The whole appetizer menu for the lounge was based on recipes from the new book.  You could order them from the bar and servers, or if you were with the Book Launch, you could get them for free.  However, the free ones consisted of two small trays with eight pieces of food on them and two dipping sauces.  Even my friend from the publishing house was a bit confused by the set up.  There was also a (cute) waiter standing by to make sure that only the people with the Book Launch partook of the free food.  Of course, once those two trays of food were picked over, no other food was brought out.  ???

They were giving out "free drink" cards to the members of the press who attended the Book Launch.  -There were a few editors from "Gourmet", "Saveur", "Bon Appetit", etc.  Well...  The (cute) waiter, I guess, noticed me talking with some of the editors and my friend from the publishing house, and he eventually came up to me and asked if I wanted a cocktail.  "Here's the listing of the special drinks for tonight.  They're free tonight... -You're with the press, right?"  Right!  So, I tried something called a "Cherry Blosson Martini" which consisted of a couple different liqueurs and fruit juices.  It was quite tasty... And as the 1 train pulled into the 50th Street station, and I began to stand up, I realized just how strong that drink was too!  ;)

A Cherry Blossom martini sounds delish!

I am a mint julep fan! The head of the composition department when I was in music school used to come over on Friday afternoons and make them with fresh mint from our garden. Then my friends and I would climb out my bedroom window onto the porch roof and imbibe when it was nice out. Ahhhh...memories.

I ended up meeting my roommate, Jim, and some friends at Therapy for dinner.  For a "special interest establishment", they actually serve some pretty decent food.  Although, I guess if a "special interest establishment" did not serve good food, the "special interest" would make it known.  ;)  -And the waiter even honored our request to turn the music down since it was way too loud for anyone to carry on any sort of conversation - and to hear our orders.

I thought it was against natural law to mount animals, even in the privacy of your own home.

Local statutes may apply.  ;D

Speaking of animals, last weekend I had a Der B and SWW moment. I had cut the grass and left the gate open in the backyard. I went outside to call Elmore, and saw a big deer in the backyard! I immediately hung up on Elmore and called the boys. They got to see it, too, but it trotted off before I could get a picture. (I might have scared it off running to get the camera.)

That was the most exciting thing that has happened since we've been here!

The "boys" refers to my DH and our DF John, the Merchant-Ivory editor from NY. He has been passing through town for the last few weeks and usually spends at least one night here whenever he's in Atlanta. So it's been nice to see so much of him.

He did kind of commandeer my office and computer, though, which accounts for some of my truancy, plus I didn't want to be a rude hostess and spend too much time on the computer.

I think i've also mentioned that we have a snake at our house. We usually look for it but didn't see it last year.

This year, we have TWO snakes living in the tree outside my window. They both look smaller than the original, so I wonder if perhaps they are offspring.

I watched the last of the documentaries on THE FIRE WITHIN DVD. It's a discussion of how the original book compared to the movie, and its effect on a young French actor who saw the movie on TV when he was 15.

THE CLOSER just wrapped their first week of shooting, so I should have dailies on Monday. The script is pretty good. The guest star we had previously discussed has a very big role in this episode!

Next, I watched last night's CSI. A kind of comedy outing for them. Yes, there were murders to be investigated, but a lot of jokes were made about people who turn up with green blood, there's an incineration that seems to be important and then that case (which ended up in a suit against the county) is left in the dust to continue investigating another crime.

CSI is definitely not the show it was three or more years ago.

Next came tonight's GHOST WHISPERER. Not one of my favorite episodes. What on earth has Nikki Cox done to her lips? Well, I know what she's done, and she resembles nothing human now.

But I just didn't get quite the zing out of the show that I usually get.

TWILIGHT, by William Gay, has been getting some good buzz around here as the next great Southern gothic novel. Stephen King listed it as his "book of the year". It was inspired by actual events that took place here in Georgia a few years ago.

Laura, thanks for asking:  Following the very filling big tax-office end-of-tax-season party at the fabulous Carmine's (chicken piccata, veal marsala, great ceasar salad, and penne a la vodka; no chocolate cake, but there were chocolate covered cannoli), I waddled over to the tax office eight blocks away and worked a little more, looked again to see if better reasonable aisle tickets for Al Gore at Radio City had become available (they had not), came home to a scrumptious shrimp cocktail followed by Berkshire pork baby back ribs with an Asian Marinade sauce, got a few more birthday calls (including one from Edisaurus!!!) during which I half-watched the CBS TV line-up.

My goodness, what a lot of lovely posts I just had to read.  Now I must write the notes, and then write some technical notes and just a couple of actor notes that have to do with technical things, including one thing we're going to change before we open tonight.  The final preview was a full house, a very receptive audience and the show played very well, save for a few slow spots in act one, which will hopefully tighten.
