Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in the zone, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're intrigued by greener pastures and might just be on their collective way.

Alvin Colt, 92; Tony-winning costume designer outfitted more than 50 Broadway showsFrom the Associated Press

May 6, 2008

NEW YORK — Alvin Colt, a Tony-winning costume designer whose work spanned more than 60 years of theater from "On the Town" to the "Forbidden Broadway" revues, has died at 92.

Colt died Sunday at Roosevelt Hospital in New York, said Susan Noack, his niece.

"Alvin Colt was a huge icon in the world of theatrical design," said designer Bob Mackie. "He had great style and humor in his professional and private life. He was a gentleman, and he certainly was a hero of mine."

Colt's first show was "On the Town," the 1944 musical about sailors on a 24-hour shore leave in New York. It was also the Broadway debut of its authors, composer Leonard Bernstein and lyricists Betty Comden and Adolph Green.

Among the more than 50 shows Colt worked on during his lengthy career were "Guys and Dolls" (1950), "Top Banana" (1951), Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Pipe Dream" (1955) -- for which he won a Tony -- "The Lark" (1955), "Li'l Abner" (1956), "Destry Rides Again" (1959) and "Here's Love" (1963).

In his later years, Colt was known for his outlandish costumes for "Forbidden Broadway," a long-running series of revues that spoof Broadway shows.

EIGHT BELLES' TRAINER DEFENDS JOCKEY

May 6, 2008

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The trainer of euthanized filly Eight Belles adamantly defended the way jockey Gabriel Saez handled the Kentucky Derby runner-up.

In an interview with The Associated Press today, Larry Jones said Saez applied the whip only to prevent Eight Belles from crashing into the rail.

"This filly in every race has tried to drift toward the rail," Jones said. "It's her comfort zone, and Gabriel knows this. This kid made every move the right move, and I hate it that they're wanting to jump down his throat. He did not try to abuse that horse to make her run faster. He knew he was second best, that she wasn't going to catch Big Brown."

Jones spoke while traveling from Churchill Downs to Delaware with his other prized filly, Kentucky Oaks winner Proud Spell. Jones is scheduled to have a news conference Tuesday morning near the paddock at Delaware Park.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals called for Saez to be suspended, contending he should have noticed an injury and pulled the horse up rather than applied the whip.

In a statement today, Saez said Eight Belles never indicated anything was wrong.

"All I could sense under me was how eager she was to race," Saez said. "I was so proud of her performance, and of the opportunity to ride her in my first Kentucky Derby, all of which adds to my sadness."

Eight Belles broke both front ankles while galloping out a quarter-mile past the finish line and was euthanized on the track. Alex Waldrop, president of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, said there will be an autopsy to determine cause of death.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death?

Good morning, all! I'm off to do some brain surgery and worl on an appendix of The Lady of the Slipper. My mother would be thrilled to find her medical dreams for me fulfilled.

I was so excited last night over the past Sunday's episode of THE TUDORS that I went ahead and watched next week's episode on Showtime on Demand. The most moving epsode yet, it covers the events of January 1536.  Our Queen Anne Boleyn is becoming quite a shrew, and that seems to be rather accurate, but Princess Elizabeth seems older than she actually was at her mother's execution. I'm also enjoying Peter O'Toole's Pope Clement.

DR singdaw, having seen the wonderful Glynis Johns and the original cast, I'd rather see someone like Blythe Danner, Christine Baranski, or Annette Bening as Desiree than one of my least favorite people.

I felt much like Jose in my reaction to Glory Days. I went in wanting to like it but it's difficult to get through the first part (it's 90 minutes with no intermission). There is an especially (IMHO) vulgar and tasteless song about "getting girls" that just had me cringing. Hearing a song like that makes me feel like my parents or grandparents. So needlessly tasteless. I also think perhaps I didn't "get it". I don't say that often because many times I do "get it" I just don't like it (like the recent production of Company by faux director John Doyle) but maybe I'm too old for this one. The show has great energy and passion but it just says nothing to me. I'm not sure why I should care about 4 misfit guys who get together one year after their high school graduation only to find that life has changed and 2 (or 3) of the four have moved on with their lives. I was that same kind of misfit guy but the last think I wanted to do was see anyone from high school a year after I left. I haven't spoken to a single person from my high school class since 1981 when I was back in Minnesota for a vacation and I happened to see someone from my class. They are not bad people but I have nothing in common with them (even the ones I hung out with) and I can't imagine even getting together for coffee to reminisce. Color me bad  ;)

I don't want to discourage new talent and I recognize the effort put into the show but unless it gets the same kind of great reviews it got at Signature, I don't think it will be around for long.

Ben - I agree that clearly, GLORY DAYS - like any show that's not pre-sold - is dependent for financial success on the reviews, and by reviews, I mean the NY Times critic.

Because some people's negative feelings on the show and the writers' talents have been strong and powerful, I have argued with them, but my feelings about this production itself and its potential for Broadway success are not very strong at all - I do feel very strongly about the future of its composer, though.  Even if the reviews turn out negative, I firmly believe that he's better off having taken this opportunity to be on Broadway than had he said "no, thank you" to the producers, and that he will flourish.   Unless he gets totally demoralized and opts only to perform from now on, of course - but I think his talent is on display, and I can't imagine there not being a cast recording, where that talent will IMHO be even more abundantly clear.

DR Jose, re: hand cream.

Since i'm very sensitive to smell i'm also quite sensitive to hand cream.  But i do use it. But only once in the morning. And not even every day. And for some reason i cannot stand the feel on my palms, so i only use it on the other side of my hand.

And as for how my sis took out a chunk of my palm ... well we were playing that game where you each put your hand on top of the others. And then you take your hand from the bottom and quickly put it on top. My niece got excited and then my sis and i both tried to put our hands to the top of the pile. ANd her nail was so sharp. It must have hit the inside of my hand really hard.

She got a chunk. But the skin did not come off.

It doesn't look too bad right now. I mean it's all red. And you can see what happened. But it's not puffy and there is nothing coming out of it. And it mostly doesn't hurt.

Thanks for the info though!

Fred, I think you're right about the composer and his having taken a chance on moving the show. And I, too, see bigger things for him. He's clearly a new and, I hope, welcome voice in the New York musical scene.

I hope, if the reviews are not good that he's not demoralized. If Brantley has his way he'll poop all over but Isherwood may be more forgiving and supportive

I am not a happy camper this morning. In addition to having the worst allergy problems I've had in several years, I've also been fighting a sore throat. Up to now I've been able to keep it under control--now I'm not so sure. Now I hate the pollen! I was doing fine until the pollen appeared.

End of rant.

Re:  hands and hand cream/lotion.  I have been plagued most of my adult life with a weird skin problem that no dermatologist has been able to properly diagnose, though a couple have said it appears to be a mutant form of exczema (sp?).  I get very small patches of extremely dry skin that ultimately crack and bleed.  I get these on tips of my fingers regularly, which makes playing the piano very painful.  I have been prescribed many an expensive "remedy" over the years (Protopic for example goes for over $100 a tube!), none of which worked.  I finally defaulted to lotions last year and though I still have the problem, it's better than it's been in a long time.

Which brings me to this perhaps funny anecdote from yesterday:  two women I know recommended a little item called Bag Balm, which I'm sure the women here know about.  I had never heard of it before (though DS Betsy told me she used it for what women use it for, LOL).  Well I left the cannister out in the car, which Betsy took and left out in the sun the other day.  I got to the car yesterday morning to find my entire back seat swathed in a thick, gooey coating of Bag Balm.  Oy and vey.  We are still cleaning it.

There is a product that i think might help you.  There is a company called Aloette that sells in canada on theshopping network (i'm sure they sell at QVC or HSN in the US). There is a product called "aloette radiance supplement".

Anyhow they woman who owns the company had a horrible hand condition where her hands bled too. And this product made that completely go away.

I think all of the shopping channels have 30 day money back guarantees. So it might be worth a try.

I think I'm going to go ahead and take out my big thermal cooler, put the contents of the freezer in their for a bit, and give the freezer a good wipe down.  Hopefully, that will help.

My flight leaves JFK at 9:25am (EST) tomorrow morning, and is scheduled to get into Long Beach at 12:30pm (PST).  -And I really think I'm going to forego the rental car, since there's no real reason to have it while I'm out there.  The couple of places I know I want to visit - meaning, "eat" - are all easily accessible from the subway.  -And since my friend's place it just a 1/2 mile from the Vermont/Sunset stop on the Red Line, I'm all set!

And after I was done with the callbacks this morning, I headed on down to Chelsea to get my haircut.  I was all set to be caught in the middle of the lunch hour rush, but when I got there, my favorite barber, Max, was outside on the sidewalk taking a ciggy break.  So, I walked in, sat down in his chair, and twenty minutes later.... ...And I think I am just going to take the Metro into Los Feliz, mainly because I never realized that the Metro System went that far.  I also think that I'm going to challenge myself to do this vacation/visit "on the cheap".  I do have one or two possible splurge meals planned, but there are also a ton of meals I know I will enjoy out there for under $5.00.  As long as I get at least one In-N-Out Burger (http://www.in-n-out.com/), and a French Dip from Philippe's (http://www.philippes.com/) (most likely Lamb, "double-dipped" with Bleu Cheese), I will be a very happy camper.

*And there's also a great little taco stand, Yuca's (http://www.yucasla.com/) right near my friend's place that features Cochinita Pibil on the weekend - sooooo good.

I LOVE the Public Art in the subway stations, especially the "flying/floating" bodies in that one station- who's name escapes me right now.

-When I was out there for What If, I got by without a car for the four months I was out there.  -And I was even staying in Pasadena for a good chunk of that run.  I still get the giggles when I remember how shocked(!) some people were when I told them that I walked from the Hollywood/Sunset station to the Hudson Theatre down on Santa Monica.  "You walked?!?!?  Next time, call us, and we'll come pick you up and bring you to the theatre."[/i]  It was about a mile walk, 15 minutes tops - or I could also just transfer to a bus if I didn't feel up to the walking.  -Oh, and the looks I got when I told people I took the bus - truly a stranger in a strange land.

I've had a full afternoon of viewing. I began with last night's TWO AND A HALF MEN to see the CSI/crossover-writers' episode. Had a couple of funny moments to be sure. A couple of big belly laughs. George Eads looks particularly scrumptuous in HD in the party scene, but he basically walked through it and that was it for him. The interrogation scenes were the funniest parts. Conchata Ferrell was a scream.

Next, I watched CSI: MIAMI. The case was fairly routine, but it provided supporting actress Khandi Alexander a graceful exit from the show. Sorry to lose her. I'd much rather Eva La Rue had packed it in. The ending where she said silent good-byes to all of the regulars was very emotional.

...And I think I am just going to take the Metro into Los Feliz, mainly because I never realized that the Metro System went that far.

**Oh, and he's also just blocks away from bk's beloved House of Pies, as well as the funky Fred 62 (http://www.fred62.com/)!

Next, I watched STRANGE WILDERNESS. I thought HOT ROD was a pretty lame comedy that I watched in December, but this beats it hands down for pathetic attempts at comedy.

These studios! Adam Sandler puts his name on a project as an executive producer, and they green light it, obviously lacking a decent script. The poor actors are improvising like mad trying to find anything funny to say or do. And almost nothing works.

And FAMOUS actors like Ernest Borgnine, Robert Patrick, and Joe Don Baker lend their names to the project for what amount to cameos.
Title: Re:IN THE ZONE
Post by: bk on May 06, 2008, 01:19:31 PM
Then I conformed act one of the Brain script - most of it was changing stage direction to reflect what we actually do in the show - there was a lot of that, and some of the transitions are different - haven't really found many line things.

And, according to the article:  Key also created the characters Mr. Peabody and Sherman for producer Jay Ward. The time-traveling dog/scientist and his boy made their TV debuts in 1959 in segments on the animated show "Rocky and His Friends."

Good Late Afternoon!

Well, my laundry is in the dryers - I'm multi-tasking in a way.  I'm doing two small loads here at the apartment, and I went ahead and took care of a big load of darks up at the laundromat.  -I just didn't want to be dealing with laundry until midnight tonight here at the apartment.

I also did a bit of sniffing and snooping in the fridge and freezer, and found the culprits: two boxes - loosely closed - of pre-made food from Whole Foods that was dated three weeks ago; a container of Orange Juice that was "Best By March 18", and two semi-unidentifiable boxes of "health food" in the freezer that had "Use By" dates of February of last year!.  So... That was that.  Of course, to totally get the smell out of the fridge would require some actual cleaning, but since I went ahead and did the "ditch and dump", I'll leave it to the others to finish the rest of the job.  Which, I know very well, they won't - well, at least the one who was the "owner" of all the bad food.  -But I did leave a nice message on the fridge saying that if I had "accidentally" thrown out something that someone wanted to keep, just to tell me, and I will give them money for it.

There's one of those German westerns on TCM right now - listed as 1969, it was actually made in the "golden age" of German westerns - just prior to the spaghetti western onslaught - in 1964.  It stars Stewart Granger, but not Stewart Granger's voice.  Also, the first appearance in a western of future star Terrence Hill (under his real name of Mario Girotti, or something like that).

Aw, shucks, dear edisaurus! But concerning BABES IN TOYLAND - sure would like to see something approaching what it was like, though! -  I didn't orchestrate it; 90% is by Otto Langey and 10% or so is by Herbert himself; i'm only the editor of the new edition.  I'd love a production of JUBILEE with a cast approaching some of the wonderful casting in the BBC and 1986 performances: British actors for the Royal Family and American's for some of the celebrities.

Maybe Prunella Scales as the Queen, John Cleese as the King, Gavin Lee again as the Prince, Emmy Rossum as the Princess, Tyne Daly as Eva Standing (Elas Maxwell), Hugh Dancy as Eric Dare (Noel Coward), Karen Ziemba as Karen O'Kane (Ginger Rogers) and Mario Lopez as Charlie  Rauschmiller (Johnny Weismuller).

If you go to the Village be sure to stop at Stan’s Donuts (http://www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com/bigmap/outoftown/california/losangeles/stansdonuts/index.htm) across from the Bruin.  Our favorite is his version of an apple fritter, the apple crisp-the forth donut down in the photos.

I just got a kind of shocking email that my first real girlfriend (as in going steady and that whole megillah) died last night in her sleep.  She had had a tough adult life, battling various drug and alcohol addiction issues, so I'm not sure if that had played into it.  It is very sad because she had such an incredible amount of potential.

I am very sorry to read that, JMK.

Starting to recover. I slept REALLY hard last night and woke up wondering where I was. I had a busy day at work, so I'm back in the swing quicker than I expected.  I'm going to Chicago August 13-15 for the 8th Circuit Judicial Conference. I'm on a committee so the court is reimbursing me for it.  Justice Alito will be there, that could be interesting.  I do want to go to NYC in the fall. Not sure when. Thanks for the comments--emotionally it's really no big deal for me.  I hadn't seen Chris for decades, literally, and had only heard of her addiction problems second-hand.  It's just sad because when we were sweethearts she was one of the smartest, sweetest girls I knew and it just kind of bums me out to think of all that wasted potential.  I'm really surprised she got hooked on the "hard stuff," for want of a better term.  Like a lot of teens of the 70s, she was not shy about recreatoinal drug use, but it was never anything horrible, relatively speaking.

Saturday was the Vixter's birthday extravaganza

We picked up 3 of her girlfriends and went to the local minature golf course where they golfed and I sat inside and waited

then we went to Dave & Busters where we got their Eat & Play special... whichi is actually quite a good deal for $23.99 you get a choice of 11 entrees , nice big meals, and a $20 game card... the girls ate and then went and used their cards and then split mine between the 4 of them... they won lots of tickets which they traded in for suprisingly nice gifts

then we were off to the bowling alley for a game of bowling a dn tehn back to the house to open gifts and watch "Bride & Preduice"

(MBarnum would be proud) finally cake and the delivery of the girls back to their respective homes

JMK, so sorry to hear your sad news.

We lost a friend this week; a wonderful and talented colorist here in town. He really was one of the nicest people I've ever known. He has transferred a lot of film for me over the past 20 years.

I donated to his charity of choice: The Point Foundation. I had never heard of it before, but it's an interesting group.

There will be a memorial get-together in about a month. There will be a lot of people who will miss him. Cancer sucks.

I began by finishing STOWAWAY. Fox was obviously grooming Alice Faye to be their next big star putting her in this Temple movie and giving her two beautiful ballads to sing. I don't understand why "One Never Knows, Does One?" didn't become an Oscar nominated standard.

The transfer is only fair. The movie has always looked soft, and there are scratches and some damage, too. They must not have original materials to work with because some Temple films are gorgeous to look at.

Next I watched THE YOUNG RAJAH which I had recorded off TCM this afternoon. I had never seen this Rudolph Valentino movie, and, of course, I had no idea it has been pieced together from only partially existing materials. Lots of stills and title cards to replace missing footage, and the footage there is in a pretty sad state. Still, nice to finally see it.

All those publicity pictures of Valentino in a jeweled jockstrap were kind of unfair to the movie. He really never appears that way in the film, at least not in the parts that are still in existence.

NCIS had a Ziva-centered episode tonight. Pretty intense to start things out, and it got less interesting from there. Still, an OK mystery.

IDOL:

The Davids once again walked away with the show. I liked Cook's first song more than the second though the judges didn't seem to agree with me. Archuleta's two songs were done in his usual sincere-style. Very nicely phrased and sung. I still think this is David Cook's show to lose.

Syesha and Jason were both the worst I've heard them in many weeks. Syesha was flat on about half of her first song. The second was better, but still had lots of bad notes. Jason is just hopeless. What a joke that he's still there and Carly and Michael Johns are gone.

I finished IDOL in about 25 minutes, so I was able to flip over to DANCING WITH THE STARS, and what just began when I flipped over? Mario Lopez in the two CHORUS LINE excerpt dances. Watched some of the other segments, too waiting for 10 p.m. to arrive.

WOMEN'S MURDER CLUB didn't feature a particularly interesting case, though I guess the final revelation was kind of a surprise. More interested in Lindsey's love life since her boy friend is SO cute. If she can't have Rob Estes, he'll do just fine as a substitute.

Jason is just hopeless.

He could do some nice "Give a Puppy a Loving Home" commercials for a local SPCA.

I am looking forward to hooking up with Mr.  Stanek again when I am in NYC; should you run into him again, DR Jose, let him know that there's a possibility for a NYC extravaganza late in June, possibly early July. . .but that is still tentative.  . . .(I have out-of-country friends who will be traveling to the apple from the burgh around that time, and they would like me to join them).

The first Brain review is out - I don't actually know where it's from, somewhere in Orange County, I presume.  But, here it is:

The Brain From Planet X
by James Scarborough, What The Butler Saw

May 5, 2008

I used to wonder whether intergalactic visitors would have libidos and the ability to make us laugh for hours on end.

And now, having seen David Wechter and Bruce Kimmel’s exquisite retro-futuristic sci-fi musical The Brain From Planet X, directed by Kimmel for The Chance Theater, I know.

They do and they can!

This show makes the solar system just a little bit smaller. We find that our visitors are just as goofy and hapless as the rest of us. They may think big, with grand plans to enthrall the Earth, but they prove that even aliens subscribe to Murphy’s Law: if things can go wrong, they will.

It’s 1958. Housewife Joyce (Allison Appleby), Engineer/Inventor husband Fred (Bob Simpson) and daughter Donna (Shannon Cudd), the composite of every do-good television family from the golden age of television, live that non-existent life invented by advertising executives and insurance actuaries.

Soon, though, they must fend off the attack of a trio of aliens: The Brain (Mark Rothman), Yoni (Emily Clark), and Zubrick (Daniel Berlin). They are aided, if that’s the right word, by – nice names! - careerist General Mills (Warren Draper) and factotum Private Parts (Dan Flapper).

A funnier script and premise you’ll never see. The songs rock, especially Yoni’s “I Need An Earthman” and “The Plan,” sung by The Brain, Yoni, and Zubrick, and the dancing, which also doubles as mass hysteria, is out of this world. The story takes place in the San Fernando Valley. Nice locale. Frank Zappa would have said that the invasion indeed did take place and the results continue to the present day, but that’s another story.

The production brims with the pitter-patter of puns, double entendres, and Boomer references (Rice-A-Roni, fake trips to the library so to watch submarine races...the only thing missing was Fred’s pocket protector and a slide rule). The show puts the complex back into military industrial.

You won’t find a better ensemble performance. Michael Irish’s Narrator notched up the hysteria like Joel Gray in Cabaret. Appleby’s Joyce put the tonic in catatonic. Clark’s Yoni begins with a Marge Simpson hairdo. Then she marvels at the terrestrial technology behind and the human statuary encased within zippers on men’s trousers. I kept expecting Rothman’s The Brain to pull out a cigar and start doing a Sands Hotel in Vegas stand-up routine.

Masako Tobaru’s set projections, and deb Millison’s costumes made me wonder if I was on the Set of "The Donna Reed Show" or "Lost in Space".

See this for the sheer visual lunacy, the non-stop laughs, and the buffet line of preposterous situations. See it because it’s live (and kicking), analog not digital. See it because you won’t believe how something so clever could come from the simple convocation of words on paper and people on stage.

Performances are 8PM, Friday & Saturday, 2PM, Saturday & Sunday. The show runs until June 8. Tickets are $27-30. The Theater is located at 5552 E. La Palma Avenue, Anaheim Hills. For more information call (714) 777-3033 or visit www.chancetheater.com.

Back from seeing this movie at Salem Cinema...http://www.sonyclassics.com/thebandsvisit/ (http://www.sonyclassics.com/thebandsvisit/) ....it was a very cute, sweet film about an Egyptian Police Orchestra standed in a small town in Israel.

Now it is time for to go to bed.

Well... I'm done packing - and I've been done for a while.  I did manage to "edit" my luggage, and, I have to say, my luggage feels strangely "light" for a full week's trip to L.A.  However, since I didn't have to pack and "warm" clothes - except for a light jacket, I think that that may have something to do with it.

I also updated my iPod, and double- and triple-checked my computer bag and supplies/cords/etc.

Alas, I also had to throw out the garbage again(!!!!!) since someone's boyfriend threw his cigarette butts away in the kitchen garbage can... apparently, just minutes after we reminded them not to do that.  Grrrrr....  Oh, and I cleaned the bathroom too.
