Well, you've read the notes, the notes were hopefully enjoyable and didn't take a week to read, and now it is time for you to post until the enjoyable cows come home.

Good morning, all! I was wide awake at 5:30 am with thoughts of CAMELOT running through my head since I will be seeing it this evening at 7:30. After trying to sleep for 40 or so minutes I got out of bed and here I am.

Today, I have more brain surgery, a bit of work at Toyland, and, hopefully, a nap before the performance tonight.

Late late late night Indiana results with a slim win by Senator ClinTON.

Probably much too slim to keep her in the running - she had to match Obama's lead in North Carolina.

There is much discussion about the intent/impact of the cross-over voters. Rush Limbaugh, whose clear and stated intent was mischief making, is taking credit for his minions crossing over to Clinton to deny Obama a victory., and thus keep the Democrat primary cycle in chaos.

I cannot believe that marissa is still in this. She is not usally the type i go for (usually i like the best dancers). It's partly her broadway background. But also i just love her cheery personality. I just can't believe she has the fanbase. Yeah!  I was a bit sad to see mario go (he is a better dancer than marissa). I'm sort of bummed that cristian is now so popular since his injury. But i can't see him beating kristi or jason.

I've basically stopped watching the IDOL results show. Since the season hasn't produced anyone I've really enthusiastic about, the results and all the accompanying filler just hasn't been of interest.

Opens up a large chunk of time in the evening to watch DVDs and other shows on the DVR. Now, on Wednesday, my TV choices are relegated to 10 p.m.

If the Disney Blu-rays arrive today, I'll be starting with SHALL WE DANCE (which actually arrived in stores yesterday). To get a jump on the review, I was listening to the audio commentary on the old sDVD this morning during my workout since I had never bothered listening to it before. I'll check, of course, to make sure the commentary is the same on the Blu-ray (I suspect they've justed ported over everything from the DVDs onto the Blu-ray. That's certainly what Disney has done with their other catalog titles that have come to Blu-ray.)

Speaking of "Call Me Irresponsible," that being name Best Song at the Oscars of 1963 was one of the true jaw-dropping moments of my teen years watching the Oscars. I was absolutely certain "Charade" would win. Not that "Call Me Irresponsible" isn't a wonderful song; it certainly is, but I've always though "Charade" one of the loveliest of all of Mancini's songs.

I suspect had he not won the previous two years for "Moon River" and "Days of Wine and Roses," he might have won for "Charade." Astonishing that he didn't win another Oscar for twenty years - the song score for VICTOR/VICTORIA.

Question for HHW DVD collectors:

Next week, Warners is releasing a bunch of Frank Sinatra-themed box sets. I don't want any of the sets, but they're also releasing many of the films in single releases.

Now my question concerns ROBIN AND THE SEVEN HOODS. Warners already released this once on DVD and I'm guessing this is only going to be repackaged with new cover art for the box and new single release.

Is ROBIN AND THE SEVEN HOODS an anamorphically enhanced DVD? I have no interest in it if it's not. I have it on laserdisc and can be content with that if the DVD isn't anamorphic. Does anyone have the previous release and know for sure what its specs are?

Thanks in advance.

May I just say that I find Blu-Ray one of the stupidest product names ever.  Thank you for your time.

Perhaps they'll change it soon.

Funny thing:  One of the CRITICISMS Blu-ray fans leveled at HD DVD was that HD DVD was too hard to say and that Blu-ray is more memorable and rolls off the tongue (I'm not sure what kind of tongue that is, though).

Odd, though, now that DVDs being issued in Blu-ray are being advertised as ",,,available Tuesday on 'Blu-ray HD DVD'!"

Blu-ray is not doing very well, it seems.  Disney has called for a significant drop in player prices.  Could it be that the much-more-expensive-to-produce-than-HD-DVD Blu-rays may see a significant cutback in number of titles released if the market doesn't perk up?

Due to a lack of anything appealing on TV last e'en, I took the opportunity to catch up on my DVR cache goodies and turned my attention to the PBS airing of part 1 of "Cranford."

What a TREAT!  I was amazed at this wonderful story and the brilliant "dames" (in both senses of the word) who populate the town of Cranford.  Especially noteworthy were the brilliant Eileen Atkins, the stellar Judi Dench and the wonderful Imelda Staunton.

I cannot wait for parts 2 and 3.

On the one hand, it's good to note that VISA recognized the activity was not from the "usual" geographic areas in which you use it.

On the other hand, I wonder if they would have called if you had used the card to pay for a hotel and rental car.

And on the third hand, if you DID use the card for hotel and car rental, then perhaps your use of the card at a "book store" WAS what alerted them to a deviation of the norm!  :D

Well, after looking at a map last night it seems that all our sundried HHWers outside of New York are also out of the way as one drives to Fort Atkinson, WI. Anthony will be taking the northern route on Interstates 80/90 and then switch to 90 and 90/94, finally ending up on 94 to get to Fort Atkinson. All you Southern Staters (TD (PA), Ginny and Richard (OH) and Jack (IN) missed out on a visit from Anthony. Gas prices being what they are, side trips to Pittsburgh, Middletown and/or Mooresville don't look likely.
Title: Re:THE ENJOYABLE WEEK
Post by: Ben on May 07, 2008, 09:42:56 AM
It's also not easy to get to Madison (the largest city close to Fort Atkinson) by plane if I want to visit while Anthony is in Wisconsin. I finally found a couple of good fares with nonstop flights but who knows what they will be like in a month or two. Most flights have at least one stop and some have 3!!! One of them takes you from LaGuardia to Boston to Cincinnati to Madison with a plane change at each stopover with total flying time hovering around 9 hours and that's without any delays.

Other weekend DVR-cache catchings-up observations:

Possible SPOILAGE

Ddldlfkelrkl  RR ;dflg;lk l'lk'r Q akjg;lkjqiu QwertyWordyDirtyBirdie singdawmarjoriedaycoleslaw.
"Ghost Whisperer" -- I always enjoy the show, but I am increasingly puzzled by the presence of Camryn Mannheim in a totally NOTHING role.  And is this show going to actually "go" somewhere in this truncated season?  By now, we should be in the middle of a shattering season-ending story arc.  All we know for certain, though, is that Melinda is "ready" to have a child.

"Moonlight" -- I thunk it more than a week ago and I think it even more now:  That new guy in the DA's office is most certainly being played up as a competing love interest for Beth's affections.  His role in the first episode was far too developed to be just another character in the story -- he was far too invasive into Beth's activities and far too suspicious-seeming of Mick's involvement in a murder case that he wanted the police to be left alone to handle.  At first, I thought they were setting him up to be one of the bad guys...and then it became clear he was being thrust into our living rooms as a "new character" in the series.  Thursday night's episode solidified that first impression for me...and previews for this week's show absolutely confirm it.  Whether he'll be allowed to live beyond the end of the season is the only question mark lingering in my mind. And so it goes, like the river flows, and time rushes on all the livelong, singdong Day.

DR Ben - being somewhat familiar with that part of Wisconsin since Richard has been a student there for 2 years, I'd recommend flying into Milwaukee.  The airport is very easy to access and very convenient to I-94 westbound.  You'd probably find better flights into and out of there.

Also, someone at the seminary told me about a shuttle bus to Waukesha from O'Hare in Chicago.  Waukesha isn't too far from Fort Atkinson.

Last night while we were watching the very funny second half of EASY LIVING, Sherlock kept staring at me & kind of making funny faces.  I had to keep asking Keith to pause the movie so we could watch him.  Between Sherlock and the Preston Sturges movie, we had loads of laughs. :)

Ditto!  Make that THREE!

And FWIW, the supporters behind Obama on TV look every bit as scary as anyone in the Hillary camp.    ;D

I will, however, have a candidate to support/vote for.  For the first time in 40 years, I'll likely vote for the Republican (presumptive) nominee (John McCain).

Not to be snarky, but I've heard a whole lot about the excitement and passion of Obama supporters.  Folks say he has a magnetism and a charisma that is exciting.  For some reason, I'm immune.

He talks about changes in America.  Great changes.  He does not, however, have a track record of implementing any great changes anywhere even though his fans presume that he will work miracles.

Another politician of the past century entered office with tons of charisma and a promise of change.  He, too, had no track record of ever implementing any changes.  Millions of German youths were extremely passionate about him, too.

Adolf Hitler was his name.  Now, yes....we are talking a "far remove" from then and now, Obama and Hitler.  But Hitler was young, idealistic and had felt "repressed" for a long time.  He was SWEPT into power by others who felt that way.  And, of course, they all distanced themselves from any culpability over what changes Hitler actually impelemented.

Obama has the Reverend Wright issue hanging over his head, even though he seems to be escaping from what folks don't want to believe.  Yes, we know he's publicly "distanced" himself from Wright.  But the fact is that Wright preaches HATRED from his pulpit.  And Obama, while saying he does not subscribe to Wright's "hate" views, sat there in Wright's church, Sunday after Sunday after Sunday, absorbing all that hate-rhetoric...but we're not supposed to believe for one minute that he was ever influenced by it.

There are tons of highly respectable people endorsing Obama.  Millions in every walk of like are behind him, too.  I hope they are right and that I am wrong.

I wish I didn't have my doubts....but I do.

Yes there will be a season two, but not likely to begin until 2009.

FOR ASK BK DAY:

Has Muse Margaret or one of your proofers ever made a suggestion that caused you to alter one of your manuscripts in any significant way?

The proofers are not really reading in that way - they are doing grammar, punctuation, and looking for typos or obvious or not-obvious errors.

Muse Margaret is a whole other story.  She "gets" what I do and is impeccable in her ability to see things that are not what they should be.  It doesn't happen often, but when she has a problem, I listen.  Sometimes it's as simple as her reading the pages I've given her and having her say "I'd like to know what that person was wearing, or how did she smell" or that kind of detail, and I always do it, because she's always right.  In the new book, which she loved, there was one section where she got antsy because I was repeating a lot of information in dialogue, because I thought it was important.  I ended up changing that to just a couple of lines from the third-person narrator rather than dialogue.

There are times when I've disagreed, but when I've gone back and really analyzed what she was saying, she was right and I made changes.  The two biggest things ever were in the title story of How To Write A Dirty Book and Other Stories, and in the final chapter of Rewind.

In the former, the story was originally written in the first person, the leading character was an out-of-work actor and she loved the idea of the story and all the dialogue, but HATED that he was an actor and hated the first person - she felt it was smarmy.  I disagreed, of course, but then reread it and saw exactly what she meant.  So, the first thing I did was change the character's occupation to the much better (and why I hadn't thought of it in the first place is anyone's guess, because it was the ONLY profession he should have had) having him be an out of work screenwriter, which made much more sense to the story.  I then made him a nebbish who hadn't had much luck with girls and that change actually gave the story some depth and a point it didn't originally have.  I then put it in the third person and voila - it worked so much better.  All of those changes, surprisingly, too me about twenty minutes.

With Rewind, she never had one problem until the final chapter - she basically thought I'd ruined the book and she wanted me to simply cut the chapter.  I thought it was great, but we agreed to both reread it and talk again the next day.  In the meantime, I had dinner with my friend Nick Redman, and I asked him about it.  I gave away the ending to get his opinion, and I told him what the chapter was about and what the point was and he loved what I told him.  So, I wrote down all the reasons he loved it, and I talked to Margaret the next day and read them to her.  And she said the most amazing thing.  She said, "Yes, he's totally right - what you told him is perfect - but that's not what you wrote."  I went back and read it and bingo, she was totally right.  In just a few paragraphs I'd mucked it up because I was facile.  It took me all of four minutes to rewrite those few paragraphs and then she was thrilled with it.

She's never been wrong yet and while it's sometimes hard to pinpoint what her problem may be, we always figure it out and I always change it.

Next, I watched the first of the Blu-rays that needed immediate attention - SHALL WE DANCE? It's no surprise Disney decided to issue this on HD since DANCING WITH THE STARS is currently their highest rated series, even higher in the ratings than GREY'S ANATOMY or DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES.

The film might have been a bigger hit had it been released now rather than before the DANCING WITH THE STARS phenomenon hit in this country. Always found it a wonderfully entertaining and ingratiating movie, despite some melodramatic moments. But it ends in a really feel-good place.

I also watched all of the special features, all of which had been ported over from the sDVD. (The commentary was the same as well.) I hadn't watched any of them prior to today, so they were interesting behind-the-scenes looks at the hard, hard work that went into making the dancing in the film look effortless. And the actors had to learn to dance well and then tone down their expertise to film the early scenes where they were klutzes.

As anyone who has ever learned a real dance routine can tell you, dancing is very hard work. Gere trained for four months to master the ballroom routines he does in the movie.

I admit I’m drawn to his charisma-not that will ever be the reason I vote for someone.  I’m not impressed with his record, though at the moment I find he is the only voice of reason about this relief for gas tax.  Of course this is one minor point.  Until I check the box on my ballot I have serious reading & thinking to do.  I always said I would not vote for Hillary & now I’m not sure.

It's been a peculiar day, and traffic's a mess, most particularly because of Al Sharpton and the Sean Bell family leading protests around the City today. So, I'm off to CAMELOT, which I hope will be wonderful. It's a mess of a show and Lerner never solved it, so for a concert, I'd prefer the original Broadway scorr and libretto. We'll see what Lonny Price wll make of it.

I fear for this BRIGADOON; I wish that the powers who think they're fixing a broken show would simply find a new book writer, lyricist, and composer and do a goddam new show since BRIGADOON was never broken, IMO. The clip online is rather alarming.

I see that GLORY DAYS is now a thing of the past; I would swear that the reviews didn't seem as scathing as that, but I only saw a few and Dame Ben Brantley was rather kind toward it.

I actually like McCain and Clinton and Obama...but I prefer Obama over the other two.

Of course, I have paid very little attention to any of it so far...when it is decided who is actually going to run, then I will pay more attention I guess. What I have seen of Obama is that he wants to bring different types of people together...rather then playing the us against them card. I like seeing that for a change.

I really didn't think the Wright thing was such a big deal, at least what I heard of it. Isn't Hillary a Baptist? It would be curious to know what kinds of things her Baptist minister(s) preaches....I used to go to a Baptist church...I would certainly not call it a loving church, not the one I attended.

Ah, well.  I shall savor the mystery.

You have to go into the "older archives" (http://www.haineshisway.com/archives/00000435.html) back on January 11, 2003:

Here's the specific entry from that time:

UNSEEMLY WACKY NOODLES

1 12oz. bag of wide egg noodles, mostaciolli or bow tie pasta (your choice).

Boil them noodles.

Drain them noodles and put 'em back in the pot and put the pot back on the stove and put the flame on low.

To the noodles add the following:

One can cream of mushroom soup
Fill the empty soup can with milk and add that.
Add as much dried minced onion as you like (the kind you find in the seasoning section of your market)
Add salt and pepper
Add two tablespoons or a bit more of ketchup (don't be scared, you must trust me - this is basically for color and it adds just the right flavor ultimately)
Mix it all together whilst singing Beat Me Daddy Eight to the Bar
When it is heated through and through add five to eight ounces of sour cream (depending on your waist size) and mix again thoroughly and heat on low until hot, stirring constantly. Serve (will probably need extra salt as you serve).

Now, I know it sounds wacky, because, after all, they are Wacky Noodles, but they are delicious, kind of like stroganoff without meat. Give it a try, you'll like it for sure. -- BK

Funny thing:  One of the CRITICISMS Blu-ray fans leveled at HD DVD was that HD DVD was too hard to say and that Blu-ray is more memorable and rolls off the tongue (I'm not sure what kind of tongue that is, though).

Odd, though, now that DVDs being issued in Blu-ray are being advertised as "...available Tuesday on 'Blu-ray HD DVD'!"

It's kind of like when there used to be leaded and unleaded gas.  Leaded gas was "regular" and unleaded was "unleaded."  Now that there is no leaded gas, there is "regular" unleaded and "premium" unleaded.

Oh, my goodness!  On that day, I posted a chocolate turtle cheesecake recipe that I lost and have been looking for!  Cool!! :D

And here's the recipe!

Quote
Chocolate Turtle Cheesecake

Crust:

2 cups vanilla wafer crumbs (Nilla® Wafer-type cookies)
6 tablespoons butter or margarine (melted)

Cheesecake:

14 oz bag caramels
5 oz can evaporated milk
1 cup chopped pecans (toasted)
2 eight oz packages cream cheese (softened)
½ cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
½ cup chocolate chips (melted)

Directions:

Combine crumbs and butter, press onto bottom and sides of 9-inch spring-form pan. Bake at 350° for 10 minutes.

In 1½ quart heavy saucepan, melt caramels with milk over low heat, stirring frequently, until smooth. Pour over crust. Top with pecans. Combine cream cheese, sugar and vanilla, mixing at medium speed on electric mixer until well blended. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Blend in chocolate. Pour cream cheese mixture over pecans. Bake at 350° for 40 minutes. Loosen cake from rim of pan; let cool before removing rim of pan. Chill. Garnish with whipped cream, additional chopped nuts and maraschino cherries, if desired.

I got this recipe from a magazine years ago, so I hope no one minds that I didn't create it. Enjoy!

I'm off to see if anyone from my hiking group shows up on this dreary, slightly wet morning.  If not I'll hike on my own.  I'll be back before Keith leaves for the gym, that way one of us is around to prevent Sherlock from licking his foot.

Jane, in all seriousness, should you really go hiking alone?

DR TCB-I do it all the time.  I don't take Sherlock with me everyday, instead we take him into town for a walk after my hike.  Where I would have gone, the park or the trail we take Sherlock, can be busy or quiet.  I never know.  My biggest danger walking anywhere around here is likely the wildlife (I spotted my first bear scat of the season on our road this weekend).  I admit I'm a bit more nervous walking around the lake since a woman was raped on New Years Day, however she was not in the area I go.  I walk the trail where I often see other hikers.

It comes down to the fact I have to go & so I choose the best options I have, nothing is completely safe.

This weekend I bought two books at Powell's Book Store....the next day my visa card company called and said there was unusual activity on my credit card. When I called Visa they told me the unusual activity was the purchase of the two books at Powell's Book Store.

I think maybe I should feel insulted by that. (...and I can hear Elmore laughing right now)

Did you explain to them that they were coloring books?

Anyone know what kind of aging process it is when one ages only 2 years in a 5-year time span?

I know it was a popular belief that one year in human years was equal to 7 dog years...

But is there a reverse where someone ages only 2 years in 5?

Hi everyone! Thank you so much for all of the lovey Birthday wishes!

I didn't know what kind of day I would have but it turned out to be wonderful.

First, my desk was covered in all kinds of "Over the Hill" things, like a gravestone, a hearing aid horn, at least 10 balloons, etc, etc....

I also had a crown which I had to wear all day.

At about three I was called to big meeting room and was suprised with a huge cake and a card with $$$!  It was a GREAT day!

I think the place was on the train station side, can't be sure.  It was on the left, by the wall, as you walked into the area.  I thought all they made were taquitos, could be wrong.  I didn't think it was an avacado sauce, I could be wrong & things could have changed.  Where was the stand.  It has been a long, long time since I've been there.

I'll be watching for your details :)

Yeah, only I could pull that one off.  I was washing the roof and some soap got under my feet.  I started slipping backwards and had nothing to grab onto soooo  I went back and over the hood.

I realized how lucky I was while laying in bed that night.  If there had been a branch or a rock, I could have been very badly hurt.   I was lucky that I only got a sore shoulder out of it.

My bed was a help with that because I set it to vibrate and it took all the pain away.   ;D

I'm still very happy with my new bed.  Best money I've spent in a very long time.

And as for Glory Days closing after just one performance, well...

The person I really feel "sorry" for is the composer, Nick Blaemire.  Again, he's just such a good guy.  However, he's also in Cry Baby, which will most likely shutter sooner rather than later.

On the bright side, how many 23-year olds can say that they were on Broadway TWICE(!) during one season as an actor and as a writer?  I'm pretty sure that that is a pretty slim list.

I did not hike alone this morning.  I went up to the mountains with three other people.  Usually our hikes are on nicely maintained trails, some better maintained than others.  This time of year the higher trails have not been cleaned up yet, nor are they usually this bad.  There were trees down all across the trail.  Combined with snow the trail felt more like a fun obstacle course.  Suddenly the trail completely disappeared under a long patch of snow.  It took at least half an hour (obviously we went the wrong way) of foraging up the hills to find the path again.  My shoes, jeans and gloves were wet & I had a few mini punctures where I had grabbed onto thorny branches to pull myself up an embankment.

All in all it was loads of fun even if my muscles are somewhat sore.

Singdaw - oh, yeah, that line.  Not adding it to the official script - it's really a kind of line that only Mark Rothman could say.  When the voiceulator translates one of the mark's thoughts as "Hmmm, did I set my TIVO to record Deal Or No Deal," the Brain says the original line, "This is boggling my mind" and then adds, "What's TIVO?  Do I need that?"  It got a huge laugh at the preview, but has sort of died since - I'll probably cut it if it continues not to work.

In other news...

I just decided to walk around for a bit just to reacquaint myself with the area.  It's amazing how much has not changed since I was last here four years ago.  On the plus side, it's nice to see some of the familiar places still in place.  On the minus side, a lot of the building in this neighborhood look like they did four years ago - and probably haven't been cleaned/painted/refurbished since then.  ???

In any case...

I walked over to Vermont to check out the cluster of restaurants over there.  House of Pies, Capriccio, Fred 62, etc., etc.  I was going to dine at Fred 62, but decided I didn't want such a big - and most likely greasy - dinner, so I hopped into a little Japanese place called Mako.  Very small, very funky, very bare bones.  But the prices were cheap - most of the combos were around $5.00. I tried their tempura (shrimp and vegetables) and squid teriyaki combo.  Very good, and the whole meal was prepared just a few feet in front of me.  I would say I would go back there for another meal while I'm in town, but I believe I have some other places to check off my list.  ;)

On the walk back, I stopped into Alcove (http://alcovecafe.com/) to see what treats they had in their dessert case.  Well, the selection was a bit overwhelming, so I just asked the guy at the register what kind of cake I should have tonight.  Chocolate, or no chocolate?.  Chocolate!  So, he cut me off a very generous slice of their Chocolate Truffle Cake...

...And I just had about five bites of it - well, maybe six or seven - and I shall have to save the rest for later.  Very good, but very, very, very rich.

*I would have gotten a slice of their Blue(!) Velvet Cake, but they had just sold the last slice as I was walking in.  ;)

...Of course, as soon as walk out of Alcove, I notice a new-ish storefront across the street: Hollywood Gelato.

Well, I did stop in, but I did not get a cup to go.  -However, I did sample their Fig gelato - YUM!  Next time...

OH!  Speak of the devil - well, at least the neighborhood... Here's an article from the New York Times about the 'hood I'm staying in... And it even mentions a couple of the places I just mentioned.  ;)

Heaven only knows what they'll charge.

Hmm... I may just have to set foot in Colony to see what they end pricing it at.  *The last time I checked on a single-disc, currently available title, they had it listed at $29.99(!!!!??!!!??!!!).  I'm guessing "EP" will go for $34.99.

*Everytime I see people going in there, I always want to tell them, "Save your money!!  Walk down Broadway a couple more blocks and go to Virgin!!!!"

An interesting night of choices to watch. I began by watching SCARY MOVIE 4 on HD-DVD.

I had to review the first SCARY MOVIE (on Blu-ray) several months ago, and I saw SCARY MOVIE 4 on HBO-HD (or one of the pay cable channels) several months ago, too. Silly, stupid, absurd, bad, but I have to admit I did laugh at some of the Tom Cruise take-offs (Craig Bierko plays Tom Cruise - called Tom Ryan in the movie). Of course, he's about 8 inches taller than Mr. Cruise in real life.

The movie looked very good, super in fact, on HD-DVD.

Then I watched the blooper reel on the film. Pretty funny.

I had about an hour, so I put in SUMMER STOCK (which I haven't watched since I got it in that musical box a year or so ago). It's a very nice transfer with solid color. I didn't have time to finish it, of course, but I will at some point in the next day or two.

I flipped over to see who went home on IDOL. Not a surprise and totally warranted by last night's performance.

I ended the evening with tonight's LAW & ORDER. A very interesting episode with Rubirosa having to defend the client rather than second chairing with the D.A. Good case with some neat surprises.

Tomorrow, I'll be reviewing the HD-DVD of AUGUST RUSH. This will be my first (and likely my last) official HD-DVD review. The film is 113 minutes long and there seems to be only one bonus feature so I should be able to do it tomorrow even with the deluge of TV programs which appear on Thursday.

I'm back from CAMELOT, which was mediocre and not very classy; Moss Hart was a classy director, and the show has elegance. I remember seeing the National Company with Arthur Treacher as Pellinore whenI was in high school, and the show was beautiful and very elegant. Lonny Price gave one of the best performances I ever saw in MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG, but he's not a tasteful director and the show is too busily directed.  Scenes that should be slow fly by too fast, and I don't know if the laughs land because of the comedy timing of the actors or the director. I suspect the former.

I think the dancers prance way too much, that someone should have checked out how well the wonderful actor Gabriel Byrne could sing or speak rhythmically (it's painful), and that the best performance is Mr Gunn's who acts the role with a wonderful French accent and sings magnificently. I also loved Fran Drescher, who should have been given all of "The Persuasion" and not tonight's cut down version, Stacy Keach, and Christopher Lloyd. Marc Kudisch, Will Swenson, and Chris Sieber were wonderful and deserved a second act "Fie On Goodness" and Bobby Steggert in a frighteningly misdirected choice played Mordred as a pissy, prissy flaming queen who thought she was playing the first scene of MAME. God, he was awful, and I've seen him be wonderful.

As for Marin Mazzie, I loved her in RAGTIME and KISS ME, KATE and I thought she was a good choice for the role of Guenevere. Tonight  thought she wasn't patrician enough. She was less River Avon and more Avon Lady.

I should also add that this was the first performance and by the end of the week, it may be wonderful. I really don't think it's ready for taping at the moment, but tomorrow night's the big PBS moment. Much as I was disappointed, I wish them well.

There were so many stupid choices on display, but this was one of the biggest: Sieber, Swenson, and Kudisch are wonderful in "Take Me To The Fair" and they should have got a second act number with the men's chorus.

I cannot believe I saw a magnificent MUSIC MAN two weeks ago that made this look like "Fanny's First Play!"

I was actually surprised when they announced that they would only get one full run-through/performance under their belts before being broadcast/taped.  -Were they "blocking" for the cameras tonight?

I have no interest in seeing anything Mr. Price directs - for stage, for TV or anywhere.  He is not an interesting director, and after his shenanigans with Night Of The Hunter I wouldn't entrust with a show EVER.  Anyone who would cut The Lord Will Provide, one of the best character introduction numbers I've ever heard is a first-class poor director.

I'm trying to get up the energy to finish the motion picture on DVD.  Right now I'm listening to Don Sebeskey's Symphonic Sondheim - I haven't heard it since it came out.  Some of it is really nice, but the mastering is terrible - you get those really quiet moments so that you have to turn the player up, then you immediately get the section that's too loud.  They should redo it.

I hope everyone is doing well.  I don't have much to tell.

I fell off the car this past weekend while I washing it and landed flat on my back but there was no damage.   To the car or myself.  :)  I learned that at age 50, one should pay the five dollars to have someone else do the car washing.  I'll never attempt it again.

Well, you must be pretty light to stand on top of the car and cause no damage

Re:  Camelot.  I went to high school with the son of Robert Peterson, who was Goulet's understudy and ultimate replacement in the OBC (in fact I think Bob ended up doing more perfs on Bway than Goulet IIRC).  I love the show, but I have always felt that incredibly long first act was a death-knell.  I don't think I've ever seen a production where the first act comes in anywhere much under two hours.

Well, it's finally going to happen!  My sister, her boyfriend and my niece are going to come over to my place tonight (in about a half hour, actually) and help me set up my TV stand!!  I got part of it put together last night, so all they really need to do is help with the attaching of the TV to the stand's post.  That will need three people.  After that, I should be able to hook up all of my components (VCR, DVR, DVD player, DVD burner...and maybe even stereo equipment) to the TV!!  I will need to get a heavy duty power strip, but I think that for tonight, I'll be okay.  YEA!!

I'M WATCHING MY PANASONIC 50" PLASMA HD-TV!! ;D ;D ;D ;D
