Get him a slice of their Chocolate Motherlode Cake (according to their website, a "Super Moist Slice of our Six-Layer Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Chips, Fresh Walnuts and Chocolate Fudge Frosting"), and take a stopwatch. I want to know how long it takes Jose to finish a slice. And he will, if I know our DR Jose, he will!

I will be glad when this killer workweek is over.
It's all because of the Grand Re-Opening of the store, which takes place tomorrow. I haven't had a day off since last Wednesday, and every day this week has been a full eight hours, split between the traning for the billing desk and cashiering.
We've got several new people working the cash registers, and I've barely had a chance to even simply say hello. That's not like me - I like to give the newbies as much encouragement as I can.
That, plus the deadline for designs for this year's employee summer t-shirt is tomorrow. I'm turning mine in today - a graphic of a dolphin leaping into the air over the sea at sunset. Der Brucer thinks I did a decent job.
Any television tonight will have to be put on hold - I'm behind on my sleep, and have to be in at work tomorrow at six in the morn, looking sharp.

Good morning, all! I forgot to mention last night that I hear this new version of BRIGADOON is to be ascored for an all-Celtic band. I guess they're hoping for a prequel to RIVER DANCE. But what happens when they get to the 1940s ballads?
I was amazed last night at the small number of posts on CAMELOT on the chat boards; everyone was too busy raving about NO NO NANETTE at Encores!
Today, back to Toyland, several errands, and perhaps a discussion with my brother Randy: he and Macbeth have been thinking, since my dad's property isn't selling, that perhaps they should rent the house. To me, it's throwng good money away since the house has vermin issues from sitting empty for 24 months, mold issues, needs a new furnace, and will be torn down when it's sold to be converted to offices, a motel, aparking lot, or worse. I think we should sell but I fear that they will hold out for a high price and this albatross will hang around our necks for way too long when a dcent selling price could be drawing interest in good investment.

Suddenly, I'm back on site! At 7:30 am, I was told there were "too many connections." At 7:50 things were fine. Five minutes ago, I was told "too many connections" and couldn't get back on the site. What the hell is going on? Is there a physical cyber reason for all the connections? Are there so many visitors? Is it my computer?

It had rained by the time I got up this morning (8:30, very late for me), and it's still overcast. Don't know how much more rain we'll see.

bk, unless you got an alternate region DVD of SWEENEY TODD, it's not a Warners release, at least not in region 1.
And though I suspect it will eventually come out on Blu-ray, it was not among the intial Paramount-Dreamworks announcements that came out last week. (CLOVERFIELD and THERE WILL BE BLOOD were, both films released on sDVD in the same month as SWEENEY.)
Sometimes an sDVD transfer is just an sDVD transfer. Yes, I noticed problems with the encoding, too, but no more serious than in many other sDVD releases I've been watching with greater scrutiny for the last year and a half. I'm not much for conspiracy theories.

Lord knows, anything would be better than that mess that Jeffrey Hornaday contributed to Attenborough's inept version of the show.

Today I'll be watching the HD-DVD of AUGUST RUSH. I know next to nothing about the film, but I see the cast on the cover and that makes it seem appealing.
If I can get to it, I'd like to watch last night's CSI: NY at some point today. They've started a story arc to wind up the half-season long "taxi cab killer" scenario which I'll be glad to see gone. All the CSI shows now have taken to these multiple episode story arcs instead of close-ended mysteries in each episode. May make it more interesting for the writers, but there are enough serialized shows on TV. I'd like for some to stay with their original formats.

I do have to say that I was a little caught off guard by the weather when I landed yesterday. It was cloudy, gray and only in the low 60s(!). I guess the "May Gray" has settled in for a bit. However, the skies did clear up a bit as the day went on, and the sunset last night was quite nice.

TV was a wasteland last night as far as I am concerned. I couldn't find a thing to watch that remotely interested me.
So...I tackled the "big" movie in my DVR cache: "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse". A major bomb in its day, this film was one of those ill-conceived desperation ploys that MGM took on trying to repeat the sensational success of "Ben-Hur." (An expensive remake of "Cimarron" was another one). If they had gotten William Wyler on the picture, it "might" have worked, especially if he'd been given carte blanche overall.. Of course, Vincente Minnelli did a respectable job given all with which he had to contend, including an updating of the story from WWI to WWII and the casting of the film's two leads. I have to say I rather enjoyed watching it although I confess I was doing so with an ear toward Sir Andre Previn's spectacular music score. I've heard the score a hundred times on LP, and on the expanded (complete) CD issued by Rhino. I'd always imagined greatness that was simply misunderstood. It's not there, though. That music was trying to save/rouse/inspire something nearly stillborn. All the thoughts I'd "imagined" have now shrivelled against the reality of what I saw.
Lovely leading lady Ingrid Thulin was dubbed by Angela Lansbury, but even she could not inject enough "presence/charisma/chemistry" into what we see on the screen. Glenn Ford was pretty good, but he was a bit old for the role and he and Thulin never seemed to "click" (despite all the yearning and angst we are treated to that "may" have made more sense in the original cut of the film, which was some 34 minutes longer than the one released) Suppotring cast members Charles Boyer and Lee J. Cobb and several others were superb. Karl Boehm as "Heinrich", the German cousin of Argentinean Julio (Ford) was set dressing, at best, and looked more like a chorus boy in a Nazi uniform than anything "formidable". (Boehm was a tad more effective as one of the Brothers Grimm, Laurence Harvey being the other). Yvette Mimieux was totally "lovely", as always, as Chi-Chi, the headstrong girl swept up by the youth movement arm of the French resistance. Sadly, all her dialogue seemed to be on a track that was distorted. And given the histrionics in which the the character seemed to indulge, the distortion was all that much more noticeable.
The production values are pretty darned beautiful, although the archival footage of WWII Europe is not on a par with MGM's camerawork.
The "message" of the film isn't as profound as it might have been. "The Old One" (Cobb) was central in spirit throughout. He was a man who lived life for all its delights and surprises. He valued freedom to live that life above all things. Alas, his offspring married very different "types" of people. One side was very political and embraced any repression that led to power. The other side was cavalier and gay (in the old sense), fully embracing the good life wherever they found it. That was all very well pre- and post-WWI...but by updating the film, the message had been seriously filtered as most folks had experienced WWII (pre- and post-) and had nothing in their experience with which to relate the sentiments/message being espoused. IMO, of course.
Oh, well. It was worth watching, and I know I'll watch it again. So....it can't be ALL that bad!

Yesterday I called the provided number and they couldn't help. They gave me another number. I called. They were already closed. I called this morning. The person I got said she had to get me to a specialist while sending off a vibe that she didn't know what I was talking about, even though a woman the other day said she'd gotten "tons" of calls from people having problems.

What is missing is "context". We don't know what might have transpired before the scenes you saw. Erik might well win the immunity idol. Amanda may need to pull Erik out of the clutches of Natalie and level with him about what is going on behind his back.

Well... I almost hopped on the Metro while I was out walking - it would have been a ten minutes ride down to where The Pantry is, so... However, I think I may be heading there for lunch today instead. However (once again), I notice that they have Roast Beef Hash listed as a Friday Daily Special, so.. We shall see.
*I do need to head down to Union Station to get my weekly pass for the Metro - they start selling them for the following week on Thursdays - so, I may just do the Olvera street food scene today. But again, we shall see. ;)

I went out to purchase a few groceries at lunch time. While I was out, they had a fire drill in our office building. Since I have been "volunteered" by my boss as a fire marshall for our group, it was not good that I was not there. But we had been told that they would avoid holding the drill during the lunch "window," so how was I to know?
Besides, they haven't given me my promised orange vest for such occasions. ;)

I heard about Whoopi Goldberg hosting the tonys this year. Hopefully she will promot the show a lot on the VIEW. And maybe that coupled with her hosting will make the ratings higher.

Moonflowers! My mom grows them every year (SWW, too, IIRC) and just called today to see if I would like some of her seedlings when she comes over on Sat. to celebrate Mother's Day. I'm cooking breakfast for her and her partner, and then taking them to the Conniseur's Garden Tour...8 of the best gardens in Atlanta.
I've always wanted to go, but it always clashed with Mother's Day. This time we can go on Sat. Hooray!

Our Detroit PBS has no listing for CAMELOT; Fortunately ther are two other PBS stations in Mich, and I'm hoping one of those carries the show.Todays WSJ ahd a wonderful interview with Gabriel Byrne about the show, the 1st musical he saw(Oklahoma!in Ireland) and his thoughts on the Lincoln Center SOUTH PACIFIC...........If I were refiming a movie musical, I'd start with CHICAGO, retaing all the songs, and requiring that 90% of the dances have head to toe photography of the dancers and at least a six seconds delay between cuts. I would also forbid anyone connected with the film from mentioning, irises, pupils, eyeballs. The closest they coud get would be a brief dicussion of false eyelashes.

I checked for CAMELOT tonight. Only one of the three local PBS stations is showing it at 8. I'll be recording it from a rebroadcast at 2 a.m.
None of the scheduled broadcasts are in HD, however. All the scheduled ones (so far) are on the regular PBS channel. Obviously, I'd rather record and see it in HD, but here (at least for now) that's not an option.

I did, however, see AUGUST RUSH. Your heart had to go out to the title character, but what an overly manipulated and irritatingly contrived drama. You'd have to have a heart of stone not to be happy with the ending, despite how absurd it was for all of the these people to end up in one place and one special time. And, of course, lots of gaps in logic that would have prevented her from reconnecting with that child before the chance encounter of the evening at the close of the film. Still, they were trying to pluck the heartstrings in overdrive with the film. It worked sporadically with me despite my being resentful at how shamelessly they were pulling the emotional strings of mine.

One nice surprise in AUGUST RUSH - the gorgeous Alex O'Laughlin played Jonathan Rhys Myers' older brother in the film and was using his natural Irish accent in playing the part.
Jonathan's singing voice is barely tolerable, and he sings A LOT in this movie.

From the clips I had seen, and the awards he was nominated for, I was prepared to like the kid who stars in this. Except for brief moments I wasn't overly keen on him, plus I was distracted by the fact he looks like Linda Hunt to me ;D. After watching the movie I looked him up & realized he was Charlie in CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. I did not like him in that either. Apparently Johny Depp does & hand picked him for the role after working together in FINDING NEVERLAND.

For the most part, it is...except that the only place that I have room to keep my vinyl records is against the wall opposite the TV, and that gets all the afternoon and evening sun. :P I don't really want to have the sun shining all over my (meltable) records. I had originally wanted to put the records against the wall that the window is on, but there's a heater in the way. However, I think I can put up a curtain right over the records to help protect them. We'll see how it all works out. But, other than that, it'll be a nice new floor plan. :)

I went out to purchase a few groceries at lunch time. While I was out, they had a fire drill in our office building. Since I have been "volunteered" by my boss as a fire marshall for our group, it was not good that I was not there. But we had been told that they would avoid holding the drill during the lunch "window," so how was I to know?
Besides, they haven't given me my promised orange vest for such occasions. ;)

Hi all! Well, it was back to Earth day. Sigh. :D
I'm waiting for Mr. Cable Man to show up. My DVR is not DVRing. In fact, as of right now, I have no TV at all.
It's been acting up for awhile now and I think I need a new one. I sure do hope Mr. Cable Man has one in his truck.
I've been very happy with the switch from DirectTV to Brighthouse. At least I did have a picture when a cloud when overhead. I keep getting notices from DirectTV trying to get me to come back. I don't think so--at least not unless Mr. Cable Man can't fix the DVR.

However, it's still better than VHS. :)

Well...yes....BUT if your hi-def recording is at 1080P or 1080I, the DVD recording of that signal, even downgraded to 480 is going to be a nicer picture than recording a signal broadcast at 480. You'll have more lines of resolution in your "master".

So...
I made it to The Original Pantry Cafe this afternoon...
-It took me a few minutes to realize that the chalkboard menus on the walls were the only menus. And I think my server knew I was a bit at sea too. ;)
-If I had known that I could just order the "Set Up", I would have just ordered the Set Up - with or without the soup. For some reason, I was thinking a "Set Up" was an add-on to your entree.
-I ordered the Hot Roast Beef Sandwich. Good, not great, nor special. The accompanying mashed potatoes tasted like they were thinned out with water and butter/margarine rather than milk and/or cream. The peas were appropriately mushy. However, the portion was huge!
-As for the coleslaw... It was good, however, I actually liked the stuff I got yesterday at Philippe's. It just didn't taste that fresh to me. Again, it was still good, but I sensed that it had been sitting in the dressing for just a tad longer than it would have been had I come at a busier time. -I was one of six people in there at the time I went. I also think my Coleslaw-o-meter is a bit skewed from my time in Richmond (where some places give you a choice of two or three different styles of coleslaw), and in NYC, of course. So... When I go back there for breakfast, maybe I'll order a side of coleslaw to see if it's better next time round. ;) *I do have to say, they had a pan filled with hash browns sitting on the griddle that looked sooooooooooo good. -And then when I saw the cook ladle two ladle-fulls of melted butter on top of them... Hmm....

I also went back to Union Station, Olvera Street - those taquitos with avocado sauce were good(!), the Los Angeles Cathedral (quite an amazing building), the Ahmanson, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Disney Concert Hall (WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - truly a stunning piece of architecture!), Pershing Square and Angel's Flight.

The Tony voters do not start seeing show for Tony-voting purposes until after the show has officially opened, and/or the Tony cut-off date. -Unlike the Outer Critcs and other pre-Tony Awards awards which send voters during previews. So, since the show is no longer running, there's just no longer an opportunity for any Tony voter to see it for the purposes of making recommendation for a nomination.

Well it is glorious to hear the music and a lot of the actors are doing very well, but I echo DR ELMORE's comments about CAMELOT.
We are just going to the joust.....the three Knights and Mr duLac are indeed the stars....with Ms Marin Mazzee a close second, although in her closeups she shore has a G E N E R O U S mouth. Staging is okay with some clever bits.

I loved doing the show....I played Mordred....it is was very hard to kill someone's dream every night....whew!

Camelot is being shown on our Cincinnati PBS, but I've given up after an hour. I agree with DR Elmore that Nathan Gunn inhabits his character, but I cannot stand Gabriel Byrne as Arthur. And I decided tonight that I'd rather listen to Maren Mazzie than watch her. I have no business staying up until the late hour at which this is scheduled to end.
I would like to have seen Fran Drescher, though. Gilda Radner played Morgan le Fey in a University of Michigan production when she was a senior and I was a freshman.

Something slightly awful happened to me tonight.
My mom had brought back 3 Murano glass necklaces from Italy. She said that i could choose my favorite.
When i was trying one on (the one i was going to take), it fell to the floor and the glass shattered.
One of the links in the chain was loose.
I just felt awful. I felt bad because it was the one i wanted. But i mostly felt bad that my mom had gone to the trouble of buying it and spent who knows how much on it. And i broke it before even wearing it.
In the grand scheme of things it's not that big a deal. But i still cried and felt very bad. I looked at the other necklaces and they also had loose links.
My mom said that it had not cost that much (which at least made me feel better). And she gave me one of the other ones.
It just put me in a downer mood before Survivor. :(

I'm glad they are showing it. But the idea of putting it on in the middle of the night seems quite stupid. The only people who will likely see it are those who know about it and record it.

-As for the coleslaw... I also think my Coleslaw-o-meter is a bit skewed from my time in Richmond (where some places give you a choice of two or three different styles of coleslaw), and in NYC, of course.
Once when I complained the coleslaw was too dry, Nate 'n Al's told me to request it wet. I was in my fifties before I ever heard that ;D

I also went back to Union Station, Olvera Street - those taquitos with avocado sauce were good(!), the Los Angeles Cathedral (quite an amazing building), the Ahmanson, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Disney Concert Hall (WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - truly a stunning piece of architecture!), Pershing Square and Angel's Flight.

DR George re: GLORY DAYS. I think the reason it is not eligible for Tony awards is not because it was only open for 1 show (and previews).
IT is because Tony voters have to be invited to see the show.

Hmmmmmmmmm.....well even the comments here at HHW did not prepare me for the disastrous and ridiculous turn CAMELOT takes with Mordred's appearance - if I didn't know better, I would think Libby Appel had her fine hand in this someplace.
I am not sure the show will recover for me.

Well it was my fault. If it had fallen on the carpet it would not have broken.
The funny part of the story is that i could not decide which one to take.
And then just as i said to myself "i'll take this one", it fell to the floor and broke.

Like DR Jane said, i get that the glass would be fragile. That is obvious.
But these necklaces had links in the chain that were slightly open.
I checked and all 4 necklaces had this problem (including the one my mom bought for herself). Luckily she had not done hers up by the loose link or hers might have broken too.

i've also only heard of murano from Italy.
I think the thing here is that if you buy them from a jewelry store they probably make sure the links are good.
But my mom said she got at least one from a market.
I don't think i can post a picture. Plus the nicest one is the one that broke. Although if i find a glue that can hold glass i might try to glue it back together. It broke in 4 pieces. With one huge chunk. Then the clasp and 2 sides. It will probably look weird but i'd like to try.

DR JMK - the music machine IS amazing, but alas, the story is too good to be true. I own the DVD's that this clip comes from. There are two DVD's with about 10 or 12 segments between them. The segments are computer animated. Each segment is unique, and more astonishing than the one before, but they are animations. That doesn't take away from the wonder of the conception and execution, though! :)

What a wacky night of viewing I've had tonight.
It began OK with my watching last night's CSI: NY. A fair mystery of a poisoning though I figured it out fairly early. I certainly saw something the CSI and the detective at the game didn't even think to check out until LATE in the show.
Yes, the taxi cab killer is still at large.

Next, I watched the 1921 CAMILLE with Nazimova and Rudolph Valentino. He wipes the screen with her with such a dignified, restrained performance. She's all rolling eyes and attitude. Ugh!
And in case anyone thinks that soft focus filters were born with Doris Day, Nazimova used them in both her medium shots AND her close-ups. The audience of the time must have thought their eyesight was going bad with all the focus pulling.

I was enjoying UGLY BETTY until about 25 minutes in, the local ABC affiliate interrupted the broadcast with tornado warnings for counties above us. They stayed on for the remainder of BETTY and all of GREY'S ANATOMY. Supposedly, GREy'S is being shown at 1:02 a.m. I have the DVR set to record it.
I noticed that the NBC affiliate also stayed on until 9 so EARL will be a wash. The CW ran a crawl across the bottom and aired their scheduled shows, so at least I'll get to see SMALLVILLE. During a commercial, I checked and saw that I had forgotten to record SUPERNATURAL. Oh, well, I'll have to read the on-line summaries and wait for a rerun.

So, I flipped over and watched CAMELOT for about 1 1/2 hours. I did not think much of it. When you have an Arthur who isn't remotely musical, it's going to be a long evening. Marin had a rough first act dropping lyrics in both "May" and "Fair." I wasn't swept away by Lancelot either. Sorry.
I did love the knights. I wish they had more to do. Mordred was ridiculous, but at least he got to sing "Seven Deadly Virtues." The last time I saw CAMELOT on stage, they had dropped that song (along with "Fie on Goodness" and "Before I Gaze at You Again.")

LOST was a wonderful episode with some key backstory on a major character. More conundrums as the season gets closer to the end.

I'm back from dinner. My friend, Lynn, and I ended up dining down the street at Fred 62. She had Spaghetti and Meatballs (which was abbreviated as "Spag N Balls" on the bill), and I had their "Hunka Hunka Burnin' Love Pancake". From the menu description, I was expecting something quite decadent and large, however, it turned out to be one large plate-sized pancake with bananas, chocolate chips and dabs of peanut butter. :) -It was my appetizer, entree and dessert all rolled into one! (And portion-size-wise, it was just right.)
She's heading out of town tomorrow to visit some family, but we may get together again next week. We worked on a production of The Human Comedy a couple of years ago, and it was just one of those times where everyone bonded. It turns out that some other cast members are also in L.A. now, so we're going to see if we can arrange a sort of mini-reunion. :)

The motion picture on DVD had one line of dialogue that made me laugh for about fifteen minutes straight, just because it was the kind of sentence I so frequently write in the notes. In fact, it will the the title of the notes.

I'm puzzling over local PBS handling of this. Our one PBS station that broadcasts in hi-def is not airing it, but one of the three other PBS stations that broadcast digitally is airing it.

Interesting. I have Comcast but I don't think I've ever been recording when something like that has shown up. But then, I don't remember ever seeing a "storm warning," at all.

AARRGGHH!! I'm watching bits of Camelot that I just recorded and just after one hour or so, there is a few seconds of pixilation and then a couple of minutes of black...no picture and no sound! :P I set the DVR to record the re-broadcast on Saturday. If there are problems with that as well, as long as the same section doesn't have the same defect, I'll be able to patch it together. We'll see.
