Title: THE FORTUNE COOKIE
Post by: bk on May 12, 2008, 12:19:10 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had good fortunes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently eating their fortune cookies and they all got the same fortune - "You will soon be going home."

OTHER BOOKS AT OTHER PRICES

These are things that are more valuable, but still at incredibly stupid low prices just for the likes of you dear readers.  Books are in excellent condition, first editions.

No Way To Treat A Lady – Harry Longbaugh – paperback original, basis for the film.  Harry Longbaugh was the real name of The Sundance Kid and the pseudonym for William Goldman, who would write Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid several years after this novel.  Very rare.  The book has a slight spine lean (typical for paperbacks, but is otherwise in very nice shape with no tears to the cover.  Price: $10 SOLD

The Underground Man – Ross Macdonald – A Lew Archer novel – though one of his last books and not that hard to find, it IS hard to find in pristine condition.  This copy is spectacular, basically unread and new, with a completely unfaded and beautiful top stain and a completely unfaded spine.  You won’t find a better copy, and it’s a really good book by a great writer.  Price: $20.00

The Eyre Affair – Jasper Fforde – the first Thursday Next novel in its true UK first edition.  This book became a rarity the day it was published – very few copies of the UK first and was immediately fetching high prices – it’s since tapered off a bit, but routinely sells for over $100.  My ridiculously low price for this as new copy?  $ 30.00

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – J.K. Rowling - first US edition – even though the print run was fairly large for the first edition, it was nothing like the millions of copies of the first edition for the subsequent books.  Price: $20

Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire – J.K. Rowling – first UK GIFT edition – these are notoriously hard to find in first edition – it’s got all the proper points and mistakes that were subsequently fixed.  Price: $35

Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire – J.K. Rowling – first UK edition – went into subsequent printings in the UK very quickly and all its mistakes were corrected.  This is the true UK first with all errors present and not an easy book to find. Price: $40

I looked up all these books on the ABE, and very few of them sell for under their original cover price, and most sell over that, some considerably so.

Good morning, all! I had lots of dreams abput The Brain from Planet X last night. God knows what that means.

DR Michael Shayne, yes the "Invisible Wall" music uses the verse to "How To Handle A Woman." The dance arranger is obligated contractually to base the show's dance music on the songs in the score. There's is a digression here on the psychological damage a dance arranger can do to a score because of this obbligation but i'm too tired to go into it now.

This morning, my barber, a trek to Toyland, a visit to the pharmacy, and a rehearsal at 6 pm of the Ellington charts that were driving me mad. I have to miss Marc Acito's appearance at Barnes & Noble at 7. Damn.

Crazy Man!  I was at the local Goodwill Store today, where I like to browse once a week or so for this and that...including books and Cd's and photographs....ANYWHO......there was a Circuit City Video Camera Tripod Box....that said it was the TRIPOD, and a camera carrying case.

Since I bought a USED SMALL FORMAT video camera earlier this year for about $30 on EBAY, I thought I would buy the tripod, since my "new" camera didn't fit well on my BIG VHS camera tripod...about 25 years old.

I pushed it around in my cart and put it back, then picked it back up....it was ONLY $5.99.

WELL....I got it home and inside the camera case was, you guessed it. a JVC GRAXM225 camera, battery pack, battery charger, and (most important) the instruction book, plus one blank tape.

All for $5.99!

I had a very pleasant weekend.

I slept in Saturday until approximately 10:25 a.m.  That was WONderful.  Since I had gone to bed at roughly 10:30 p.m. Friday, that was nearly 12 hours.

I can't much account for the rest of the day, but there were a couple of phone calls, including an advance Mother's Day call from my mom thanking me for her card, her gift and her corsage (white roses) and letting me know she would be at my cousin Debra's house Sunday afternoon for Mother's Day lunch.

I know I napped later, and then settled in with some TV, catching up on my DVR cache from Thursday night.

Yesterday was a whole different ball of wax (and how many here have ever seen a "ball of wax", different or otherwise???)  I was up at the crack of something or other a.m. -- surely before 8.  I cleaned myself up and went shopping, getting a cup of Peet's coffee and then standing in line awaiting the opening of Trader Joe's where I splurged on many wondrous things of the consumable variety.

Once home, I put a load of clothes into the washing machine and then settled in to watch the first of three -- Count 'Em THREE -- motion pictures on DVD.  Motion pictures, I might add, that have been languishing in a pile of other unwatched motion pictures on DVD.

First up was "Deep in My Heart", the MGM musical bio of Sigmund Romberg.  Jose Ferrer** gives a splendid performance and there are many wonderful numbers in the film, none more scintillating or sensuous than the Cyd Charisse-James Mitchell dance to "Serenade" from "The Desert Song."  I don't know if Charisse was ever more amply displayed, or performed choregraphy as complex, as in this number.  Helen Traubel is sheer delight as Romberg friend Anna Mueller.  Her numbers are wonderful.  Unlike most musicals of that era, this one had quite a bit of melancholy attached to it, including the death of Dorothy Donnelly, one of Romberg's book writers.  Merle Oberon as Dorothy was magnificently beautiful at every turn, even on her death chaise.  Traubel sang a gorgeous "Auf Wiedersehn" for her that can only be said to prime the tear ducts for the finale when Romberg, at a concert in Carnegie Hall, sings a "new" song dedicated "to/for/of" his wife:  "When I Grow Too Old To Dream" is the song and it prompts bawling of an unseemly nature.  (This song as sung by the MGM chorus and the chorus's performance of "Time For Parting" at the end of "It's Always Fair Weather" are among the most exquisite, melancholy finales of any musical film).

MGM wunderkind Roger Edens took sole producer credit on this film, one of the rare non-Arthur Freed "producer " credits for a product of the Freed Unit.  Edens invested much hope into this film, and under Stanly Donen's able, but not wholly inspired, direction, it works pretty well.  But, and this is a reserved "but", it lacks a necessary "pizazz" to make it wholly remarkable.  It's beautiful and has a fantastic score.

While CinemaScope was a "new" process when this film was being made, MGM opted to film "Deep in My Heart in a 1.75:1 spherical 35 mm format (according to IMDb), but it suffers, IMO, from some of the same problems several MGM musicals done in CinemaScope suffered in those early years of widescreen mania: The film's sound stage settings are very painfully apparent.**   Color schemes are also a bit odd, IMO, with various hues of reddish brown and a muddy ochre being used liberally throughout the art direction (mostly in the form of wall paint and furniture finishes) and making some of the scenes appear flat, rather than popping off the screen.  It is, otherwise, a beautifil film, well-paced and one of my favorites, but one which I always seem to approach with reservation.

With the ducts cleared, as it were, I turned my attention to "The Broadway Melody of 1936", a film I had not seen and one I thoroughly enjoyed.  What a treat to see a young Robert Taylor in a role John Payne or Tyrone Power would have done at Fox!  Payne could sing, the other two not, but no matter.  Eleanor Powell dazzles with her trademark smiles and various dancing poses in closeup. Ditto her wonderful tapping/toe point/backbends in performance, and don't foget those rapid turns she tossed off with abandon.  Jack Benny was fun as a radio/newspaper gossip columnist, as was a recurring routine of a pissed-off Robert Taylor storming through a news room and sending papers flying as he raced by many desks, culminating in his socking Benny in the nose.  Una Merkel was lots of fun, too, and so were Buddy and Vilma Ebsen.  As my first exposure to Ebsen was the same as many folks' here (Jed Clampett in "The Beverly Hillbilles"), it's a wonderful thing to see this tall, rubber-bodied actor/dancer do his late-1930s schtick for the camera. In "...Melody of 1938", he interacts beautifully with Judy Garland, and I can certainly understand why MGM would cast him as the Tin Man in "The Wizard of Oz", although his dancing style better suited the Scarecrow (the role he was originally cast for before switching with Ray Bolger).  What a shame for him that he became deathly ill from inhaling the aluminum dust of the early makeup* (I believe that was while Mamoulian was the director).  Fortunately, we got a splendid (ageless) Tin Man from Jack Haley.

In "The Broadway Melody of 1938",  we again get Taylor and Powell and Ebsen, but in different roles and joined by George Murphy, Binnie Barnes, Sophie Tucker and Judy Garland.  There's a little bit of everything tossed into this pot and the movie probably suffers a bit from too much excess.  But we get the amazing "Dear Mr. Gable (You Made Me Love You)" number that Roger Edens arranged for Judy Garland.  Tucker does "One of These Days".  Binnie Barnes plays a regal ex-chorus girl bitch.

In both "...Melody of..." films, we get treated to a gent named Robert Wildhack.  In the 1936 Melody, he portrays Hornblow, a man who has done a scientific study of snores.  In the 1938 Melody, his character is called The Sneezer, and he is a man who has done a scientific study of sneezes.  Whether this is your cup of tea or not, his observations of sneezes and snores is quite dead-on and amusing.

By the end of "...Melody of 1938", I was totally "melodied" out, but that was fine as it was time to start watching the finale of "Survivor."

*Corrected, as per der Brucer's post that follows.

I am not sure if that story about little David's father from IDOL is completely true.

When i was watching the Early Show this morning, they were talking to david's voice teacher (for like 6+ years).

He said that he knew the family well and had spoken to david's dad yesterday.

The voice teacher said that david's father was told not to go to rehearsals anymore. But not because of poor behavior. But because it was deemed more fair that no contestant have a family member in rehearsals.

I got home a bit after 9pm last night. And it took me a long time to get through the whole SURVIVOR finale (what did everybody think?).

Unfortunately the 6:30pm dinner got delayed. because my aunt's friends only showed up after 7pm.

I know they are always late and i would have told them dinner was 6pm or 6:15pm.

The biggest reason why it seemed rude it because my 2 year old niece who usually eats at 5:30pm was waiting to eat. She arrived at 6:30pm and asked where her supper was!

Bt 7pm my sis had to order. And they left at 8:30pm (her bedtime is 8pm).

I had ribs. But this place only sells a full rack. So i have a lot left over.

I don't know why. Maybe my stomach is not as big as i think (well it looks big :)  )  but if i eat a roll and a bit of an appetizer, i am basically too full to eat dinner. I only ate 1/4 of my food.

But it makes great leftovers!

It really has been a great visit filled with all sorts of excursions.  Even though I had a "wish list" of sorts of things to do, I never really planned anything definite - which has made planning - or not planning - each day much easier.  Yes, there are some things that I wish I could squeeze in while I'm out here, but I'm not "missing" anything.  It's been a true vacation - lots of relaxing. :)

DR JRand - I did indeed bring my "eyeglass wardrobe" to L.A. with me, however, I think I've been favoring my full-frame pair.  I did wear the half-frame ones on the plane ride over, but I'm actually liking the full-frame ones a lot more than I thought I would.  -And since the May Gray has settled in, I haven't had any real need for the sunglasses.

I really don't want to go to this memorial thing - I loathe these sorts of evenings because everyone wants to have their five minutes and it ends up being three hours of the same thing over and over.

The best way to handle that is to have prepared remarks by about three people.  Everyone else's reminiscinces are better left to be conveyed verbally to the family during the reception, or better yet in letters to the family after the fact.  But this never happens.

I rushed home from dinner last night. It was hard to catch up. it seemed like there were hardly any commercials. Anyhow i must say i was completely shocked by the vote. Obviousy we don't know until the finale if there will be F2 or F3. And we don't know who will win immunities. But it was not surprising that natalie was booted. And i expected parv and amanda to take each other.
But i cannot believe parvati won. My local paper had her as a million to 1.  After realizing it was F2 and not F3 (i sort of think amanda would have won if it had been F3) i realized alexis and nat would vote for parv. But i was shocked at erik's attitude towards amanda. And eliza too. She was so bitchy.
Was anyone else as annoyed as me that we did not find out who was the other vote for amanda. And i would have liked to know what the vote would have been if amanda had chosen cirie. Usually we find that stuff out. So i was annoyed at jeff probst.

I'm not sure how i felt about the finale. Some of it was really good. But the final scene was not the best.
I liked the wedding. And i was okay with the adoption.  And i actually thought them finding out their father had another child was quite a shock. But that should have been the final scene, not rebecca and justin.  And while the idea of them as a couple is growing on me. I think it's too soon to watch them kiss. I still think of them as brother and sister!  Btw, i also liked kevin's flashbacks and how it tied into the story. And kevein going to see scotty's parents. But there is no way that woman could have been his mother. How old is scotty supposed to be??

I was reading the televisionwithoutpity board and some people thought ozzy was being petty by being mad at parvati for outsmarting him. I totally disagree. I don't know how close they were before this season. But it soundsl ike they were friends.  If i went on Survivor with one of my friends i would expect them to be loyal to me.  And i don't think i would forgive them if they screwed me over just so they could win money.  I get why he was mad.  He even said on the reunion show that was the only reason he did not use the idol. Because parv had been his good friend before the show and he felt he could trust her.
Oh and btw (ozzy is my fav) ozzy and amanda are the cutest couple ever!

DR Ron, a couple of corrections about your wonderful summary of DEEP IN MY HEART.

It's Jose Ferrer, not Mel Ferrer, who stars as Romberg.

The film was not filmed in Cinemascope. It is in a wider frame than the old Academy ratio, but it is most definitely not Cinemascope.

Great price :)
You really wanted to add your name to the recent list of folks getting new electronic gadgets.  ;)

It's Jose Ferrer, not Mel Ferrer, who stars as Romberg.

The film was not filmed in Cinemascope. It is in a wider frame than the old Academy ratio, but it is most definitely not Cinemascope.

Advancing years and assumptions are to blame.  I had no idea MGM experimented with wider formats than Academy ratio during those early years before Camera 65, et al, but apparently they used a spherical format at 1.75:1 in 35mm.  I have corrected my summary (and attributed by ** ).  I'compensated by saying it still suffers from the same problems as the 'Scope films...too obviously soundstage-bound with color palettes that don't seem quite right.  I'd love to attribute that to Eastman color, but the flesh tones, costumes and props aren't affected, so I'm guessing it's the art department's difficulty in striking the proper color balances for the newer, wider lenses.

I watched the SURVIVOR finale last night as well...and I find it very difficult to believe that this was considered the second best, after season 1, season of SURVIVOR. Most of the time it was all I could do to get up the ambition to watch it each week.

Titles don't count.  People do, and only people who are known in some field or other, or characters from books, plays, films.  So, no, bunson burner doesn't count, bye bye birdie doesn't count, etc.

I think most of us know this, but once you start thinking about the initials on Mondays, you almost feel this compulsion to list every combination you can think of, counting towards the game or not!   :D

In any case...

I had a good time at the taping of "Chelsea Lately".  I met up with Cason down at LACC and then we motored on out to the studio where we waited.  And waited.  And waited.  The tickets said to be in line by 2:15, so we got there around 1:30 - and there were already a couple of people in front of us.  The security guards started passing out the small bins for us to put our jewelry, belts, etc. (anything metal) in around 2:15, but the line to start going through the metal detector didn't start moving until around 2:40.  They finally started seating people in the studio a little after 3:00, and then after the requisite warm-up by the warm-up comedian, they started the show/taping around 3:20.  And since it basically ran in real time, we were done a little before 4:00.

It really is/was a small studio - only 85 people were let in for the taping.  i was being "good" and left my camera in the car as the tickets/website instructed, but, of course, as soon as we got in there it seemed that everyone else started taking out their cameras and camera phones and started snapping away. Ah, well...

Her panelists for the first part of show were comedians Brad Wollack, Finesse Mitchell and Bob Marley (not that Bob Marley), and her special guest today was Poppy Montgomery from "Without A Trace".

We ended up getting seated in the third row, and if all the audience shots are kept, we should be easily spotted a few times during the show.  "Chelsea Lately" airs tonight at 11:30 on E!  Needless to say, there are at least four DVRs/TiVos on stand-by for tonight's airing.  ;)

After the taping, we headed back up to Los Feliz, and supped a small Greek place.  Very good food, and just what both of us needed after waiting in line for an hour and a half, and clapping our palms off for another 45 minutes.  I could tell that both of needed a little blood-sugar boost by then.

It was great seeing Cason again and catching up on everything.  And he actually plans on heading to the Chance Theatre to catch The Brain out there sometime in the next few weeks.

And, yes, BK, I passed on your "message" to him.  ;D

I'm back from a frustrating band rehearsal with the Men's Chorus, and i'm unhappy, feeling both underappreciated and left in the lurch because of their financial situation, booking too much music into too little time, and whatever chance I have to fix those charts is gone: I won't be at the dress rehearsal this weekend and I won't be arpound for the concert, There are problems in two numbers that I wanted to fix tonight and they're not gonna happen; they never played the damned pieces completely through so I only know there will be train wrecks at the dress reheasrsal and I can do nothing about it.

I think I'm going to turn off the computer and go to bed. Fuck'em all.

DR TCB - Chelsea Handler is a female comic who has a talk show of sorts on the E! Channel a few nights a week.  She can be very funny - and she does not allow anyone to get away with anything....she calls celebrities on their crap when they try to put it over on her.

She's kind of like a slightly hipper Kathy Griffin - or hippier anyway.

I guess I have no clue.  Who is Chelsea Handler?

Chelsea Handler is a comedienne.  She was on "Girls Behaving Badly" on the Oxygen network for a while, and started doing some stand-up, as well as writing some books.  -Her latest book, "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea" just came out a few weeks ago.  She hosts a sort of daily news/gossip wrap-up show on E!  -And it also turns out that she's currently dating the head of E! Entertainment now too.  I find her very funny, and soooo wrong - but in a good way.

As for Cynthia Nixon... Well, she was outed back in 2004, a few months after "Sex and the City" went off the air.  I've seen her and her partner a few times with her daughter around the Upper West Side.

DR edisaurus - Just in case you missed it, there was a wonderful article/feature about Bill Irwin and his new clowning piece in Sunday's New York Times.   -It's still available online.

Bill Irwin's show sounds great. I wonder if it will end up in NY? His shows are always worth a trip up from Atlanta!

Back from a VERY long memorial, which was my fear.  The program itself was fine - a few of us spoke and a couple of songs were sung.  But then they opened it up to anyone who wanted to speak, limiting them to two minutes.  Since most of the people were former acting students of the deceased I think you can imagine that they did not limit themselves to two minutes.  I have to imagine that nearly twenty-five people spoke.  Nice anecdotes and all, but way too long.  After, there was a reception - I stayed for a little while and then headed home.  I got a filet o' fish and a Big Mac from MacDonald's on the way.  I took two bites of the filet o' fish and wish I hadn't swallowed them - something was terribly wrong - it was like eating hard rubber with tartar sauce - in all my years I have never had a dud filet o' fish, but this was inedible.  I saved it and will be delivering it back to them tomorrow.  Big Mac was fine, though.
