Well, you've read the notes, you know the story, you can repeat the story, or keep the story to yourself.  You are in control.  You will control the horizontal, you will control the vertical.  What am I, The Outer Limits all of a sudden?  Let's post now, y'all, y'hear?

Good evening - Part 3

Great pics, DR George!  -Is Mr. Coulter still as adorable as always?  And is he still "surprisingly" young?

DR Tomovoz - This too shall pass.

Oh, and DR George - Has my mail reached you yet?

Congrats, BK!

And before this topic gets locked...

Well, it did get locked... but since I copied...

Sorry, but it's so seldom I make the first post!

It has been a very low-key day here in Oakland CA.

I'm nursing an ugly, depressing and disgusting head cold.

I spent an evening watching "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House" on PBS -- wonderful comedy with Cary Grant, Myrna Loy and Melvyn Douglas.

I also watched, on DVD, "Shattered" -- Wolfgang Peterson's rather intense mystery starring Tom Berenger, Bob Hoskins, Greta Scacchi (!!!???!!!), Joanne Whalley-Kilmer and Corbin Bernsen.  It's not a perfect film, but I'm a Tom Berenger fan and he's seldom been better than in this film which is stylish, extremely well made (with a very good Alan Silvestri score) and a shocking revelation at the end.

This and "Someone to Watch Over Me," also with Berenger plus Mimi Rogers are two of my favorite guilty pleasures.

Between "Blandings" and now, I've watched the past few years of Michelle Kwan performances at Nationals and Worlds...and, folks, she has only gotten better and better and better.  I can't wait to see what she does next!

And just in case you thought all ice skating ended with last months' Nationals chatter, we have world's coming up next month!

Good evening - Part 3

Well, I can't comment on the "as always" part since I'd never heard of him before this concert, but while signing CDs after the concert, he was very gracious and polite and spoke with everyone that came up to him.  Unlike the picture on his one CD, his hair is now shaved very close and he has a Van Dyke beard (where the goatee and mustache are connected).  Very attractive up close. ;) He has a very strong (and high) voice, but I have to admit that I was not impressed with his "song stylings."  To me he was over the top and it was very distracting.  He never could just sing the song.  He had to emote practically every syllable...visually and vocally.  Debbie, on the other hand (the left...did you know that she's left handed?  I didn't) performed everything incredibly well.  She sang "It's an Art" from Working and did the little monologue as if she were in the show.  Wonderful.

Congrats, BK, on your show's award!  Gee, guess I should have warned you about the food at that event.

I spent a delightful evening celebrating my pal Larry Drake's birthday tonight with some very delightful friends of his from NY at Sonora where the food is very good, but rather expensive.

BK, maybe we should have a friendly competition to help us keep up with the writing of our respective novels by seeing how many pages each of us could get out in week.  Oddly enough, while at dinner, an actor I had directed in my Sherlock Holmes play, The Ebony Ape, in Kentucky years ago came in.  He has since become a psychic.  I had run into him a couple of years ago at the Hollywood Post Office and invited him to our annual Christmas Party.  At that time we briefly talked about several things I was working on and he told me, "Work on the novel."  Tonight in the restaurant, we talked about getting together for lunch some time and he said, "and we can talk about how the novel is going."  I was surprised he had remembered that casual conversation almost two years ago.  And when I told him, "Unfortunately, I've not been working on the novel", he replied:  "You should be..."  I've felt that way too...something is telling me I better get off the mark and get cracking.

Der Brucer and I did indeed have a wonderful time tonight.  It's nice to know that Philly is no longer a distant city.  (Hey, I'm used to the idea of a two-hour commute.  And the countryside between Rehoboth Beach and the City of Brotherly Love is much prettier than my commute used to be.)

We had a good time at the Reading Terminal Market.  I zoomed over to the Cook Book store, getting the revised edition of Becoming a Chef and John Thorne's Pot on the Fire.  I've always loved good writing.  Then we raided the Spice shop, with roasted chestnuts, cous cous, whole nutmeg, ancho chili powder, tahini and marmalades ending up in our basket.  Der Brucer found a cast iron sandwich press for himself, and a funnel with a strainer attachment for me.  And then he found a surprise for Penny O before we found dinner at the Down Home Diner.

I think one of the reasons we keep going to Jack McDavid's restaurants is because der Brucer knows he "sort of" owes the man an apology from the first time.  Several years ago, we went to McDavid's upscale Jack's Firehouse, and der Brucer, who had driven us to the place using "alternate" routes (meaning, he pretty well got us lost), told McDavid that it was too bad the place was in such a bad neighborhood.  The look on Jack's face was not one of pleasure.  In the thirty years since der B had been in the area, it had turned around and become one of the more desirable neighborhoods in the city.  Unfortunately, we hadn't seen those changes due to our luckless route.  And also unfortunately, we haven't run into Jack himself since that first time, but someday...

Der B told in yesterday's notes about his dinner.  Me, I started with a tomato-basil soup, a clear soup tasting deeply of the tomatoes, absolutely wonderful.  I followed this with the Carolina pulled pork platter, with sides of butter beans and the best fresh coleshaw I've ever had, not drenched in dressing but tangy and with a nice crunch.  One more stop, as der Brucer had to have some ice cream from a favorite vendor.

On to the theater, to meet Penny.  Only we got there way too early, so we stopped for a pint at a nearby bar.  I'd forgotten what it's like to go to a bar where people can smoke while they sit next to you.  Bleh.

Penny was thrilled to see us, and just as thrilled to see the roses we'd brought.  OK, maybe that's an exaggeration, but she knew exactly how to work the roses into her show, took us into the theater to show us where our seats would be, and gave us our cue as to when to throw the roses onstage!  Der Brucer also revealed his gift to Penny: some canelli he'd found at the Market.  (I still think it would have been better if he'd waited until the end of the show, considering part of Penny's running commentary.  She'll understand.)

Penny was in wonderful voice.  She ranged from Verdi to Gershwin to Sondheim with ease.  Her "Losing My Mind" was frankly better than Julia McKensie's.  And she is a really good comic actress, as well!  I'm glad I didn't botch the roses throw (for anyone wondering, this should be done more like tossing a frisbee, and not a Molotov cocktail).

After the show, we waited until the throngs died down before approaching her again.  Pictures were taken, book was signed.

And too soon it was time to leave.

Penny, you were wonderful.  Give your pianist, Peter de Mets, a hug from us, because he was really good, too, and I think he'd rather have you do the hugging than...well, never mind.  And please thank David Spencer for his generous contribution to the evening.

It's very late, time for me to retire.

For some reason, I've got "I Could Have Danced All Night" running through my mind!

So BK is catching Up, is he?  That's what happens when you go to those crowded events, you know.  Up is quite contagious, and it has been "going around", as my doctor always says.  I understand it's particularly endemic among writers.  I myself must be immune, because I never seem to catch Up.

Gee, BK, you must feel like Dalton Trumbo.  Well, at least Woody Allen didn't take all the credit for what you wrote.  But congrats anyway.  Some day the Truth Will Out and you will be enshrined in the Bullsh*t Hall of Fame.

Didn't you say something about a second season of said show?  If so, do you plan to re-up in the WGA, in anticipation of next year's award?  Perhaps it won't have the television draw of the Annual Academy of Country Rap Music Awards, but it's got wings.   Spicy or extra crispy?

I must say those pictures that Woodser and Brucer got do capture lots of the Happytude of the evening. And just bytheway, the cannelli lasted about twelve minutes, guys... oy, throwing pastry in the general direction of a chronic dieter. Oy. But YUMMY! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Happy Sunday everyone!

I love chopped liver too!  And I actually had some yesterday.

Great pics with PennyO!

DR Jose: I remember that Trading Spaces episode with Hildy's "flower" bathroom.  I actually tuned in right before the new episode and saw most of the participants' and designers' comments.  The only thing I missed is if the couple actually really liked the bathroom.  Since they said tons of people come over to see it, I will assume they haven't changed it (although how one would take thousands of flowers off a bathroom wall is beyond me).

I'm curious, what did Stephen Schwartz sound like? (you mentioned he sang a couple of songs).  I love hearing composers sing.

btw, I'll have your translations in a few days I promise!

Dear BK, you're always the winner in my book!   While the food sounds like a recipe from "Dishes for your Disposal," it sounds like you worked the room a bit, and that's always good.   Congrats on the nod, if not the award itself.

DR George, I'm jealous I missed Debbie's concert!  She's one of the best, and I really love her.  I may have to listen to her Alan Menken album today as well, although I think my fave track of hers for BK is "Hero" on UNSUNG MUSICALS 3.  Last weekend she was doing a concert with Ron Raines and she sang the orchestration of "Memory" I did for her.  Maybe I'll do a Shapiro Gravitte compilation CD!

Last night I saw "Latter Days" with my best friend from college who just moved back to NYC from Houston.  It was nice to see him, we had a good dinner (linguini with Italian sausage), and the movie wasn't bad.  The cast is very good.

Today, pops symphony work for Jeff Harnar and Shauna Hicks.  And listening to Debbie.

OK, I'm confused about the "Blow Up" comment re: poor color.  Is this Antonioni's Blow Up?  I remember that as being in black and white.

We watched the Fox DVD of The Day the Earth Stood Still recently.  What a fab movie.   The supplemental material must have been done for the LD release of several years ago, because the documentary was lengthy and interesting, interviewing Robert Wise, Billy Gray, Patricia Neal, and a guy who, I think, produced it (and who was chockful of Daryl F. Zanuck anecdotes).  Anyway, they were all given ample opportunity to reminisce about the movie, and their interviews were nice and lengthy, as opposed to the sound bites that are so in vogue now.  If the docu had been made now, none of those people would have been involved (for reasons besides the obvious: Wise's recent demise).  I can hear the objections now:

"Who the hell are all these wrinkled old people yammering on and on?!?

"Well, these are people who were all deeply involved with the making of the film.  Their first-person accounts offer insight and perspective that nobody else could --"

"So?  Not a one of them is under 55.  Nobody likes old people.  You know what wrinkles look like on a 48-inch HDTV?  Scrap this.  Get a bunch of kids to talk about what they think of the movie.   I'm thinking Hillary Duff, Mandy Moore, Lance Bass and that weird-lookin' kid, whatshisname, from Malcolm in the Middle."

"But sir, I seriously doubt any one of them has ever actually seen--"

"Listen, we'll get somebody else to write what they're gonna say.  It'll only be one line apiece, anyway.  And you need music in the background through the whole thing.  I'm thinking Nelly.  Maybe Eminem."

Anyway, The Day the Earth Stood Still is a great movie, still very atmospheric and effective, and the transfer is superb.  The documentary is more than 70 minutes long and very interesting.  I really recommend catching this DVD.

As noted in yesterday's posts, I watched All That Jazz last night.  It was not what I remember, oh no, it was not what I remember.  I taped it from Bravo some months ago, and it seems that every scene that stuck in my memory was not there.  Cases in point:

At the beginning, we see a shot of the auditioning dancers from overhead and their numbers dwindle, and dwindle, and dwindle.  Fosse did A Chorus Line better in one minute than the so-called film of the show did in two hours.  I didn't see that shot.  Where is it?

"NY/LA" in its final staging had the lights dimmed and became extremely hetero/homo/bi-erotic.  Did Bravo clean this up?

The scene where Joe Gideon is seducing a dancer in his apartment, with the clock in the background.  "Do you think I could?"  "What?"  "Be and actress."  Long pause.  "No."  Close-up of clock.  That likewise was cut.

Maybe all you DVD movie experts out there can explain this butchering of and arguably classic film.  I can't.

DR Lulu wrote:  "OK, I'm confused about the "Blow Up" comment re: poor color.  Is this Antonioni's Blow Up?  I remember that as being in black and white. "

Nope, it was definitely in color. Remember the models and Hemmings rolling around on that very colorful paper used for backdrops in their modeling shots? I haven't seen this movie since it first came out, but my young mind will NEVER forget seeing NUDITY from those girls and later from Redgrave in that movie.

Well, DR WFO, cutting "Aerotica" isn't a surprise since at one point, Sandahll Bergman strips off her top and bares her ample chest for all to see (outdoing Ms. Janet Jackson decades before she thought of it and not using pasties). As for the other cuts, I can't answer. Get the DVD. It's very cheap and has the whole show with good Dolby Surround sound.

Matt H:  That's bizarre.  I just looked up Blow Up on IMDB and they have it as being in color (Metro Color, no less).  Yet I still retain a very strong memory of this film as being in black and white.  And no, I didn't see it on a black and white set - I saw it in a film class just 3 or 4 years ago.  WEIRD.  And yes, I remember the romp with the models...but remember it in b&w. :)
Title: Re:AND THE WINNER IS...

DR WFO: Simple.  Bravo wanted more room for commercials, so some stuff got cut.  What wasn't cut to squeeze more ads in was cut for "adult content."  If they'd eviscerated someone, it probably could have remained intact; but God forbid anybody see a nipple.

After all, "how am I going to explain breasts to my children?!?"

In film class, did you see a 16 mm print? I know for years (but many years ago), MGM was famous for sending out B&W prints of color films for use in 16 mm. I went to the local library many years ago to see MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS for the first time (long before videotape was available for home use), and the print MGM had sent was in black and white.

Today my Sunday newspaper included a 24-page pamphlet that can only be described as a glossary and user's guide to ordering "beverages" at Starbucks.  It's written in a folksy tone and even includes a grade-schoolish fill-in-the-blanks sentence for novices to use when they place their order.

I've studied it carefully and was extremely disappointed to discover that it does not explain why "Grande," which translates as "Large," is not the biggest cup of coffee you can buy there.  It does tell me, however, that if I'm nervous about ordering, I shouldn't be.  Nervous about ordering a cup of coffee?  Please.  Gimme a break.

Perhaps Starbucks should institute the new marketing tagline of Starbucks:  Unnecessarily Complicating Your Life In An Already Complicated World.

Good morning.
Panni/Anna's Report from the WGA Awards:
First for the important information: Fashion and food. bk looked quite dashing and handsome in his tux and shiny shoes. Like a Jewish James Bond. There were no outrageous gowns to be seen. One middle-aged man looked supremely silly decked out head to toe in a black leather suit, but fashion-wise it was a pretty staid crowd. The food, as bk mentioned in his notes, was to die for -- literally. And the waiters, in my humble opinion, had too much attitude for their own good. A snarly bunch. This is the first time in the years that I've been attending that the awards were held at the Century Plaza. And, believe me, FS Pogue, the food at this hotel makes the food at the Beverly Hilton (where the Awards were held until now) seem like five-star gourmet fare.

Our table mates were a pleasant bunch - an independent feature producer, a theatrical set designer, a screenwriter and his date from Ohio, a man in film distribution,  a documentary film maker, etc. Most of the people at the table were on Atkins or South Beach, so very little bread was consumed (the rolls were rubbery anyway) and the dessert, which looked like a little alien creature with chocolate antennae, remained mainly untouched.

Now to the actual awards. Bullshit! won and bk was thanked from the stage, as he should have been. All the other Bullshit! writers, producers, etc. in attendance congratulated him throughout the evening. He was most definitely a big part of the reason the show received the award and it was a damn shame that he (and another writer/producer who also was not a Guild member) were not up there on the podium. The award for this category was handed over by Peter Dinklage and Bobby Cannavale  -- the handsome "little person" star of  THE STATION AGENT, and the lovely actor who played his nosy neighbor and eventual friend.

Some of the other presenters - all with pretty bad patter written by members of our union who should know better - were: Sean Astin, Kim Catrall of SEX AND THE CITY, Keisha Castle-Hughes, young Oscar nominated star of WHALE RIDER, Anthony LaPaglia, James Woods, Beau Bridges, Mariska Hargitay and another female star of SVU,  Djimon Hounsou, Oscar-nominated star of ONLY IN AMERICA,  and a very funny Cloris Leachman. I'm blanking at the moment on others, but will add more as I remember, or perhaps bk will.

John Michael Hayes' award was accepted by his daughter. He was unable to attend - he is, sadly, blind.
Veteran scribe, Loring Mandel, made a very moving speech on being given an award for his body of work.

The most uncomfortable moment of the evening for me: As the female writer who won for OUT OF THE ASHES, a harrowing tale of Auschwitz, accepted her award, she paid tribute to survivors of the Holocaust while flirting with Kim Catrall who had handed her the trophy  (giggle, giggle... "I can't concentrate with you standing back there"...). Had she won for something a tad lighter this might have been cute, but I found it truly offensive coupled with a speech about the Holocaust.

Will add more later.
Did I mention that our own bk looked dashingly Bondish?

Mentioning Mariska reminds me to mention that she has turned into quite an exemplary actress.  I'm in awe of some of the work she has turned in on L&O:SVU, and last night's episode with guest star Craig Bierko was no exception.

And DRPanni, I know will share her picture of the WGA Awards show soon.   :D  Congratulations on your win, Mr BK!

So much excitement.....DRGeorge thanks also for the precis and the photos.  What a wonderful time must have been had by all!  And the performers sound like they enjoyed the evening as well!

DR Lulu - for a LONG time I thought Blow-Up was in b/w because of the cover of the LP....all b/w very strange....maybe that is what you remember.  ;)

It's raining buckets - and if a bucket falls on you, ouch! A good day for writing and for backing up and saving every minute. The power can go on days like this. (Did last time.) LA is never prepared for rain. Still haven't taken a real walk. Each time I get set to go, it starts to rain too heavily for major walking. just remembered another presenter Maria Bello from THE COOLER.

I will be leaving shortly for a trek down to San Diego, Dear Readers, so I might catch a performance of Georges Bizet's The Pearl Fishers at the San Diego Opera.  The sets and costumes of this production have been designed by fashionista Zandra Rhodes, and the pictures on the SDO website promise a wildly colorful production, indeed.  I have never seen this opera on the stage, so I am rather looking forward to it.  The Pearl Fishers contains what is arguably the most beautiful tenor/baritone duet ever written.

Matt H.:  Yeah, that must be the answer.  Before I saw your post, I mentioned this strangeness to my husband and wondered if that was it...if the 16 mm print we saw was in b&w for obscure reasons.  I'm REALLY surprised our professor (who was really good) didn't mention to us that the film was originally shot in color.  Maybe he was embarrassed.  Then again, maybe I was spacing out and missed his explanation.

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

Well, I just wanted to check in before heading out this afternoon.  I'm going to classical voice recital being presented by one of my college classmates.  It's been ages since I've been to a vocal recital - I'm actually quite excited.  And the venue is great too - the concert/recital hall at the University of Richmond.

Again, Congrats to one and all and all and one!

DR SWW and DerB - Where's my scrapple? ;-)

DR George - Yes, Mr. Coulter is very attractive up close- and from a few feet away too.  I had heard that he had started getting a bit self-indulgent - a case of being different for the sake of being different methinks.  But with Mr. Schwartz next to him for the evening...

DR elmoore - I LOVE Jeff Harnar and Shauna Hicks!  I wish Shauna would bring back her "Shauna Hicks and Her Sixties Chicks" show someday!  Are you doing arrangements for/from their Mickey & Judy show?  *And I wonder if Shauna remembers me from the one time I accompanied her at a reception for her alma mater.

OK - Gotta run!

BK - Have something VERY good, VERY well-prepared, and VERY "splurge-a-licious" today!  You deserve it!

DR George: Great description of the show last night. And thanks for posting those signed cds.

I'm curious, what did Stephen Schwartz sound like? (you mentioned he sang a couple of songs).  I love hearing composers sing.

btw, I'll have your translations in a few days I promise!

Jennifer, take as long as you need for the translations!  I'm in no hurry!

As for what Stephen Schwartz sounds like, both his CDs "Reluctant Pilgrim (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000J6K7/qid=1077481023//ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i6_xgl15/103-0204166-9134278?v=glance&s=music&n=507846)" and "Uncharted Territory (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005V8J4/qid%3D1077481078/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/103-0204166-9134278)" are listed on amazon.com and have sample clips to listen to.  The "Editorial Reviews" of both CDs are very complimentary.  For "Reluctant Pilgrim," one reviewer wrote, "Schwartz has an immediately appealing voice, and the band and soulful backup vocals are solid. This is a somewhat surprising but highly enjoyable find for Stephen Schwartz fans."  And for "Uncharted Territory," another reviewer wrote, "Schwartz's surprisingly boyish tenor adds a touch of warmth and fragility to the material."  (FYI:  The Editorial Reviews at amazon.ca are not as complimentary.)

Hello everyone!  I know I've been horribly E&T about posting lately.  I've been able to read, just haven't had the time to post.  Pirates of Penzance opens next weekend, and we are in the thick of rehearsals.  In addition, I took on the role of costume mistress for the show, so i've been running around town trying to locate costume parts and sewing supplies.  Craziness!  But I will try to be better about posting now..
Good vibes to those who need them
Congrats to those who have done things worthy of praise

Jrand , to answer your question, I don't know if it's wrong or right but I was taught that a lady crosses her lets at the ankle and tucks her crossed ankles under the chair.

Crossing your knees is bad for your legs.

BK - Starz/Encores is not "some loser network".  Since HBO and Showtime now show primarily original programs, Starz now shows all the first run newer movies that HBO and Showtime used to show.  I realize a lot of use see these films on DVD or VHS, but most people don't and this is the only way to see them uncut (except for the shrunken screen during the final credits).

Believe it or not, I have never seen or been interested in seeing PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, but with the good ticket prices now in effect I was able to get 2 tickets in Row D Center this Tuesday for half price.  The only problem is I just played the CD for the first time in years and now I remembered why I never wanted to see it.  The score is terrible except for a couple of numbers.  A friend said to approach it as a theme park ride instead of a show, but I wonder what DRs who have seen it have to say.

Count me as another one who enjoys the score in the film version of ON THE TOWN. I've defended it here on at least two occasions, but I'll mention again that I think the new songs that Edens, Comden & Green came up with fit their cast and their way of delivering a song quite wonderfully.

I saw THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA twice. Once from a Majestic high balcony seat and once from about the 10th row of the orchestra. I disliked the show so much the first time I saw it, but I thought it was because we were so high and far away, so when I got my hands on an orchestra seat, I gave it another chance. Both times, I marveled at the vacuousness of the score and book. It's a magnificent technical production, but it takes more than sets, costumes, and technical wizardry to impress me. (And the chandelier effect is a REAL nothing.)

I watched the Lon CHaney silent version last week, and I honestly believe that's the first time I've ever watched it all the way through. I did not remember the ending at all, so I think that was my first real viewing, and there is so much about it that's really impressive.

I tried something for the first time today - Diet Coke with Lime! It's good, and I like it much better than the Diet Coke with Lemon.

Cued up in the DVD player now is the OTHER 1949 Gene Kelly/Frank Sinatra musical: TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME. I just got it on DVD. SHOW BOAT, despite that mono sound, looked quite spectacular.

DR MattH,

I saw POTO (Toronto production) from the fourth row of the orchestra (not one-upping you; it was a freebee). And - third try, I think - on this one we agree at last. In a word (and you could not have picked a better one): vacuous.

I like POTO....I have seen it on tour three times.  It has a lot more humor than it is given credit for.  And the music played LIVE is exciting.  Of course there is much NOT to like - but those are real live breathing singing people up there....I like to watch their faces as closely as possible.   And Raoul is usually such a terrible dancer that watching him in "Masquerade" is a show in itself.

The Best Musical Tony for TPOTO and THE LION KING were both cases of style over substance. Both shows were marvelously designed and awe-inspiring in their technical achievement, but beneath the tinsil was only more tinsil. I much preferred the meat and potatoes of INTO THE WOODS and RAGTIME (of course, each of them offered technical achievements that were also quite alluring).

I've seen POTO at least twice.  Both road shows.  The first time I saw it, I knew that the Phantom wouldn't be Michael Crawford in my head but heart was ready for a wonderful voice.

Well, the poor guy that had role sang it about 5 octives to high.  The friends I went to see the play with said it was worth the price of the ticket just to see the look on my face.  I think my jaw hit the floor!  It ruined the play for me.  I couldn't care what happened to the Phantom.

I do like the play.  It's one of the plays I may go see when I go to NYC.  I'm having a hard time deciding what I want to go to.  Most of the plays I thought I'd like, I've seen as road shows.

Le Miz tickets go on sale this Thursday!

While brousing through my old Playbills, I discovered some surprises; I saw lots of well-knoiw folks that were not well known at the time, or with whom I was then unfamiliar:

Fantastics (Sullivan Street Playhouse – Oct’76) Betsy Joslyn OB’way debut

Comedians (Music Box – Nov’76) John Lithgow, Jonathan Pryce (B’way debut)

Crucifer of Blood (Helen Hayes – Oct’78) Glenn Close

The Inspector General (Cicle in the Square – Oct’78) Bob Balaban, Theodore Bikel

King of Hearts (Minskoff – Nov’78) Millicent Martin, Bob Gunton

Hide and Seek (Belasco – May’80) Christine Baranski B’way debut

The Supporting Cast (Biltmore – Aug’81) Hope Lange, Sandy Dennis, Jack Gilford, Betty Garrett

Cloud 9 (Lucille Lortel – Apr’82) Michael Jeeter, Jeffrey Jones

Little Shop of Horrors (Westwood LA) – Oct’83 Faith Prince (replacing Ellen Green)

Who else has "I saw them when stories"?

der Brucer (anything to get the lagging post count up!)

Which do you prefer to do:  Yard work or house work?

While brousing through my old Playbills, I discovered some surprises; I saw lots of well-knoiw folks that were not well known at the time, or with whom I was then unfamiliar:....Little Shop of Horrors (Westwood LA) – Oct’83 Faith Prince (replacing Ellen Green)

Who else has "I saw them when stories"?

der Brucer (anything to get the lagging post count up!)

When The Secret Garden came to The 5th Avenue in Seattle, a friend of mine said that his partner was playing the role of Dickon, but it turned out that he left the tour before the show came to Seattle.  I hadn't heard of him at the time, but the actor who played Dickon was Roger Bart!  Also in the cast was Amanda Naughton as Martha, who went on to become a regular in Rupert Holmes' "Remember WENN" on AMC (when it was still "American Movie Classics"); AND playing the Ayah was none other than Audra Ann McDonald!

Trying to think up questions and answers Hollywood Squares style, as bk suggested, is REALLY hard. Shows what good writers that show had - and how they could write perfectly for each of the wonderful regulars. To this day people think that they made up those quips on the spot - a compliment both to the writers and performers. In fact, the list posted earlier I got in an email in which it noted how funny these people were for "making up" such clever answers. They were pimpin' bad, man.

Thank you all for your POTO posts.  It's interesting how such a long running show got so much negative comment.  I'll let you know my opinion Wednesday.  And I have seen the Lon Chaney version as well as the Nelson Eddy version.

Unknown actors at the time that I saw them: Lorretta Swit as Gooch in MANE and Brad (B.D.) Wong as the houseboy in LA CAGE AUX FOLLES>

I had heard (I can't remember exactly when) that the stars are given "funny" answers to the questions beforehand, but not the real answers...and of course, they can make up their own if they want to.  I don't know if that was the practice throughout the entire history of Hollywood Squares, or if it was just a recent thing, since not every celebrity on the show is a quick-witted comedian.

Thank you for the welcomes!

Now tell us about the "Singing Spiritual Women" - no one would belive me if I told it.

Well, since you asked so nicely...

Two years ago, I was in a production of "The Sound Of Music" at a Long Island performing arts camp.  I was thrilled to be cast as Mother Abyss (Very unconventional casting, if you ask me.  My last name is Weinbloom!  I don't make a very convincing Catholic.), and it seemed from fairly early on that this would be a very good production.  Two weeks before we were supposed to open, the head of the theatre department came into our rehearsal studio to tell the cast that the very Jewish philanthropists of the camp had complained that nice Jewish girls were being "forced" to play nuns (No mention of the little Jewish boys who were playing Nazis!).  Our director, in all his brilliance, came up with a 'logical' solution for this problem: Get rid of the nuns.  Of course, the entire cast was outraged, but especially the poor nuns who not only were losing valuable stage time but also their one chance to act like shiksas!  When I asked the director why the philanthropists were so upset, he simply said "Well, the Catholics have done some terrible things to the Jews over the years..."  And the Nazis haven't?!  With each passing day, different aspects of our characters and the show in general were stripped away.  First, we were told that we wouldn't be allowed to cross ourselves.  Eventually, we also lost the right to kneel or hold our hands in a religious manner.  When we got our costumes, they were simple black dresses.  No habits, no crosses, nothing remotely religious.  Instead of referring to Maria's home in the begining of the show as the "Abby", we were forced to call it the "School".  Two days before the show, we were asked not to sing the opening in Latin, but rather on a simple "Lalala".  On the final cast list that was put in the program, the nun ensemble was referred to as "Singing Spiritual Women".

It was very, very sad.

Good Evening!

What a wonderful recital!  Wagner, Massenet, and Puccini were presented with flair and style - as well as with impeccable diction and a magnificent voice.  It had been years since I had heard my friend/classmate, Kara, sing, and her growth and progress since then is remarkable.  It was also good to hear - and see - my college vocal coach, Melanie, again too.  It was another very pleasant way to spend the afternoon.  I also caught up briefly with some other former teachers and students too.  -Oh, and she sang three wonderful songs by R. Pearson Thomas.  I'll have to investigate his writings further.  And her encore of Herbert's "Art Is Calling for Me" had a few choice "interpolations".

After the recital, Steve and I headed out and about and hit various stores to pick up various things.  Hancock Fabrics, Staples, Home Depot and Target.  Then we grabbed dinner at Joe's Inn, and we're currently back at his apartment waiting for the "Sex & The City" finale.

Thus ends the adventures of DR Jose for today... thus far.

-And as I thought would happen, going to the recital this afternoon has re-kindled my classical inkling, and I will most likely find myself in a practice room this week with some Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, Ginastera, Chopin, etc.. scores in hand.  Always good to keep my fingers "honest".

DR Jenny - Welcome!

DR Jennifer - I think there's a "Product Locator" on Atkins' web-site.  Maybe you'll find some favorable search result there.  If not, it never hurts to ask the manager of your nearest store to add them to their inventory.

-Back after "Sex & The City".

I guess I am the lone ranger here, WEL, but I enjoyed Phantom of the Opera both times I saw it.  Is it great theater?  No.  Did I feel like I got my money's worth? Yes.  Was I entertained?  Without a doubt!  Considering the fact that in my mind, Velveeta and Cats rank as two of the worst theater experiences of my life, Phantom was a very pleasant surprise.

On the negative side, I will say that all the hype about the famous chandelier scene in the show is just that -- hype.  I have seen feathers fall with greater speed and velocity.  As I told some friends of mine who were going to see the show on their NY vacation several years ago, That loud thud, heard in Times Square every night at midnight, is just the sound of that damn chandelier finally reaching the stage of the Majestic.

DR DerBrucer,

I've already checked out your market, so have a look at ours. Even better, come visit. (I think Philadelphia's is superior for cheese places. And there's no ice cream location at St. Lawrence.) Toronto has a second market - Kensington - which in the years I've been here has changed from a Jewish market to Chinese/Vietnamese to Portuguese to West Indian (with holdovers from each era).

What I really like - and I'm sure you have the equivalent in the Mid-Atlantic - are the farmers' markets in Ontario's small towns. There's a particulary good Mennonite market in Waterloo County.

All right, here's a question for the DRs who are NYC-friendly:

In about a month, der Brucer and I will be heading up to NYC for a day.  I've already got the food questions covered on another site (and have been getting some interesting answers), but when it comes to shopping, I'm still not familiar enough with the area.

So, what bookstores would any of you recommend in the Theater District?  Particularly stores that specialize in books on theater, and books on cooking.

What, no bells?  No whistles?!  This is an outrage!  :-*

Thank you all for the kind welcomes!

You want bells?  Here ya go:

I Hear Bells in the summer night,
Distant bells that no one hears.
I hear moonlight softly chiming,
And the clang of ivy climbing.

I hear the bells on the river dock,
I hear the bells in the city clock, too.
Truly I do.
I could show you.

Are you sad?  Come along with me.
Hear the world with my own ears.
Hear the starlight faintly tinkling,
And the ping of candles twinkling.

I hear the bells in a summer show'r,
Not just the bells on the quarter hour.
If you're in need of a world that can shine,
Come and hear mine!

Call me mad, well, of course you will.
Put me under lock and key.
I'll hear music where I'm rooming,
Like the bong of roses blooming.

I hear the bells in a waterfall,
Bells seem to call from a flower stall, too.
Truly they do.
I could show you.

Is it wrong to be hearing things
Others don't take time to see?
When I feel my special tingle,
And the river starts to jingle

I hear the bells that I love so much,
Bells I can smell, I can taste and touch.
If you're in need of a world that can shine,
Shine,
Shine,
Come and hear mine!
Come and hear mine!
Come and hear mine!

What, no bells?  No whistles?!  This is an outrage!  :-*

Thank you all for the kind welcomes!

You want whistles?  Here's them too!

Anyone can whistle, that's what they say--easy.
Anyone can whistle, any old day--easy.
It's all so simple:  relax, let go, let fly.
So someone tell me why can't I?

I can dance a tango, I can read Greek--easy.
I can sly a dragon, any old week--easy.

What's hard is simple, what's natural comes hard.
Maybe you could show me how to let go,
Lower my guard, learn to be free.
Maybe if you whistle, whistle for me.

Whistle at a dragon, down it'll fall--easy.
Whistle at a hero, trumpets and all--easy.

What's hard is simple, what's natural comes hard.
Maybe you could show me how to let go,
Lower my guard, learn to be free.
Maybe if you whistle, whistle for me.

Welcome, DR Jenny!  Good folk here, each and every one!  Just finished crying through SEX & THE CITY.  I'm saying nothing!

When I saw the National Tour of GREASE in Cincinnati around 1973 or so, I knew no one in the cast at the time:  Rizzo was played by Judy Kaye, Sandy by Candace Early (?) who was later on ALL CHILDREN, and Doody was played by John Travolta.  On my first job with The New Amsterdam Theatre Company, Victor Herbert's EILEEN, I met Judy Kaye, and the first thing this ex tough Pink Lady did was hit a high D.  And that's when I gave her my heart.

ANYBODY WHO MENTIONS THE ENDING OF SEX AND THE CITY BEFORE DR JENNIFER AND I GET TO SEE IT WEEKS FROM NOW (DAMN CANADIAN BRAVO) WILL DIE A HORRIBLE HORRIBLE DEATH!!!

Can you tell that I mean it?  I have to avoid watching talk shows tomorrow.  What else can a girl look forward to on Spring Break than finally getting the chance to watch Regis?!?!  This is heartbreaking.

Oh DR Emily I know exactly what you mean.  We are 4 weeks behind here (for any DRs who care). And I am going to do everything to avoid finding out about the ending. I won't watch any talk shows either.

So please DRs if you are going to talk about Sex & The City, can you put the words SEX & THE CITY in big writing at the top of your post.  I really really do not want to find out what happens either.

Good luck DR Emily :)

Btw, my sis who is also a huge Sex & The City fan says there is no way I won't find out the ending.

Phantom of the Opera was bad in so many ways, but, at least, I thought, it had some passably romantic melodies.

A rival composer recently played me the section of The Girl of the Golden West that got the lyrics "Turn your head away from the garish light of day"

As Billy Crystal says in Forget Paris, the main song is School Days (or, a de-waltzed version of Come To Me Bend To Me)

I hear Ah Leave Me Not To Pine (G & S) in the song that contains the immortal line "You were once a friend and father."

One of my favorites is Ballad of the Easy Life from 3Penny Opera.  Put it over a disco bass and voila, you've got the title song.

But I've always liked Think of Me . . . it's comparatively original!

Jenny's photo looks rather like our very own Tammy Minoff.  And that's a compliment!

Back from Grant's and we finished the CD proper.  All that's left to do is record the four Kritzer songs (piano vocals - will go very fast) and then mix the sucker and for once I'll have it in plenty of time to ship with the books.  Hoo and ray.  Would you all like to know what songs?

Oh, lord!  I agree with each and every one of those sentiments!
Still, when Lloyd-Webber steals from himself (VELVEETA = JOSEPH) something is truly amiss.
I still cringe whenever I hear the bridge to "Half a Moment" being sung in "As If We Never Said Goodbye," but I think that's because I miss the lyric "Like a toy kaleidescope, images of you. . ."

Oh!  I'm not sure what to tell you!  I'm a high school student (Sophomore) in NY (I live about a half hour from the city).  Like most teenage theatre fans, I'm studying to be an actor (But unlike the most teenage theatre fans, I'm realistic!).  Um...I use parentheses a lot.

I saw John Travolta in the chorus of OVER HERE! but I thought John Mineo was much cuter.

I recorded SEX & THE CITY, but won't watch it until tomorrow, so I can't possibly spoil.

I really don't think there is any real danger about us spoiling SEX AND THE CITY since it really hasn't been talked about here at all. I don't know if it's because we know Canada is five weeks or so behind us or just because it hasn't come up, but I don't remember ANY discussion about this year's stories.

DR Panni,

My memory isn't sharp on that one. I remember the incident and I remember Ying Hope. But I don't remember the combination. I'll ask around.

And then there was the brouhaha over Showboat - but I imagine you were out west by then.

We're getting quite popular over at The DVD Place.  Someone at one of the "other" sites, printed my comments about all the Airport whining about the hubs in the cases being too tight.  Then they denied there'd been much whining and said everyone had been talking about the transfers.  Of course, if I could respond I would merely tell them to look at the entire thread.  But, I'm happy to see they're enjoying our DVD site.  Why, the man who runs one of these "other" sites has even taken to running his DVD thoughts every week.  Tres amusing, considering he's never deemed it necessary to do so before, and that site has been up and running for years.  He did like Pickup on South Street, so he gets brownie points for that, and he did love Thelma Ritter and was even proud that he finally remembered where he'd seen her once before - Rear Window.  Apparently All About Eve has never graced his DVD player, or any of the other hundreds of films Miss Ritter appeared in.

OMG! Thelma Ritter! Only one of the greatest of ALL Hollywood character actresses. The fellow must have missed PILLOW TALK, too, which has been on DVD for years. And so has HOW THE WEST WAS WON. Geez! These "experts" with no real knowledge of Hollywood history are pathetic.

Good evening!

DRs Jennifer and Emily and .... - I have a feeling that even if you find out how "Sex & the City" ended tonight, it will only have it's full effect once you actually see it.  Yes, it may not all be a total surprise, but there are some great visual moments in store for you too.  However, best of luck blocking out the various media outlets over the next week or so.  *Hey, at least you get "Y&R" a day ahead! ;)

And, yes, we cried too.   :'(

DR WEL - I actually liked POTO too.  Did I love it?  Not exactly.  But it has it's moments, and unless you're a die-hard ALW-basher, I'm sure you'll have a good time.  Marvel at the scenery.  Marvel at the costumes.  Oh, and marvel at the voices!  Some of those choral passages are so dense harmonically.  *And having played through the keyboard books, I can also say that some of musical passages - well, at least the orchestration, are quite tricky.  I saw the show last August, and had a wonderful time.  And I believe Hugh Panaro is still "in the mask" at this time, and he's always a joy to listen to.  And from your Row D seat, you'll get a nice view of everything - and actually be able to notice just how "small" the show is - well, the Majestic stage - compared to some other productions.  *If you want to see "the" chandelier drop, take a plane and see it in Germany.  The theatre there was built for the show, and the chandelier mechanism was built into the theatre.  A friend of mine sang Raoul over there for a while, and he said the chandelier drop is quite impressive - and fast(er).

DR SWW - As has been mentioned, for all things theatre-related check out the Drama Book Shop.  They moved to their current digs a few years ago, and it's a very browser-friendly store.  And be sure to take advantage of the staff should you have a question or a quest.  *If you happen to be on the lookout for theatre music and collectibles, you may also want to head over to Colony Music.  Yes, they mark everything up.  Yes, they carry things they shouldn't be carrying (they have a "buyer" who goes over to London every now and then to "buy" some music).  Yes, they carry some things that other shops in New York don't carry.  But their selection of sheet music is pretty good.  -I'd pass on their CDs - their prices are higher than retail!  Go down the block to Virgin for slightly better pricing; up to Tower or HMV for even better pricing; or down to J&R for some relative bargains, and a surprising selection.  -You'll also be near Footlight too, so...

And if you don't happen to find something at Colony, then you can walk down to the Hershey store.  ;)

And if you haven't seen the newest issue of Gourmet magazine, get it now!  It's all about New York.  Yes, some of the more upscale places are highlighted, but they also list places such as Broadway Panhandler, and the various cookbook shops on the island.  Have your Visa card(s) ready!  *A personal recommendation, I'd head over to 5th Ave., and check out the Japanese department store, Takashimaya.  I've mentioned it here before.  Such a neat place - experience.  And if you happen to be in need of some Japanese tea and cooking supplies, the basement has a small, but nice collection of spices, teas, containers and confections.  (Alas, a little pricey, but...)  -Oooh, and maybe they'll be handling out samples of that delicious "layered" cake made with crepes and pastry cream!

-And if you happen to need to some other recommendations for food - or theatre - please feel free to e-mail me directly.

-Are you really just going up for the day?  or is that just a proverbial day?

DR Noel - Any mail yet?  -Just checking to see how my local post office is doing.

Thelma, she's right up there with Marjorie Main as far as I'm concerned!

Oh, and just who retorted to the whiners (weiners) on that other site, might I ask?  Who was it that said that one post does not a whine make. . .?

Oh, and perhaps BK or DR Noel know this:
Why do the cds of both PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES and OVER HERE! contain alternate tracks, rather than being replications of their lp (vinyl) counterparts?  I'm not complaining, but, there are some cuts on the lps which I prefer on the former - "Be Good or Be Gone" is (IMHO) better to listen to on the vinyl, the cd makes me just wanna get up and dance!  Were the original tracks in really horrible shape that they couldn't be used when being transferred to cd?
Just curious. . .

We drive up, spend some time, see a show, drive back.  We sleep a lot the next day.

We're going to see Assassins during previews.  A lot of what we can do will depend on when we leave home for the drive north.  But I would like to check out a drama bookstore (or two!), and appreciate the recommendations so far.  (I can hear der Brucer now: "But you got cookbooks in Philly!")

And he's right, the market for those books is national, which is why I'm not going to stress the cooking stuff in NYC.  :-\  Play scripts and theater related materials (other than recordings) can be harder to find, on the other hand.  And I do like to have a supply of readable material on hand, things I can read aloud to der B when we're on a longer trip, since news radio can get repetitous.

Td: Yes, I saw your retort, very nice.  Apparently thirty people whining isn't whining but one person pointing out the whining is a whiner.  Makes perfect sense to me.  I watched the finale of Sex and the City.  My only problem is that I've never seen any other episodes.
Title: Re:AND THE WINNER IS...

DR SWW - Yes, the cookbook market is a national market, but if you've never been to Kitchen Arts & Letters over on Lexington Ave... WOW!  Truly a kid-in-a-candy-store experience!  The out-of-print and foreign titles are worth the "experience".

Otherwise...

Your main concern with driving up will be the Lincoln Tunnel.  Either get in before rush hour by 7:30, or after rush hour after 9:30.  Now, if you're going up on a weekend, then...  Just make sure there's no parades or presidential visits planned for the day you plan to go up.  Gridlock!

The final SEX AND THE CITY made me cry. And for a weird reason.
My dog got upset seeing me cry and he started to cry, so we had a cry fest. Just when I stopped crying my daughter phoned from San Francisco to see how SEX AND ended (she doesn't have HBO in her dorm) and in telling her about it I started to cry again. And the dog got upset again... You get the picture. I'm taping CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM because I didn't want to lose the pleasure of the ending of the show quite just yet. Hope they don't make the movie they're talking about. It should just end here.

Had a pleasant, relaxed weekend visiting home.  Visited with my mom, sister, and grandparents (tried to meet up with my dad, but timing just didn't work out this time).  Also got to meet the newest member of the family, a 7-month old German Shepherd/Husky mix named Ky.  Nice for mom to have someone to share the big ol' house with. :)

I've studied it carefully and was extremely disappointed to discover that it does not explain why "Grande," which translates as "Large," is not the biggest cup of coffee you can buy there.

It's the same reason that soft drinks at movie theaters (and other places) come in medium, large, and jumbo!

Speaking of ALW stealing..but this is him stealing from himself...sort of.  What's the line from Scrambled Feet?  "I'm stealing from the stuff I already stole!"  The music to this song, "Married Man," was the tune that became "Music of the Night":

Dreams of summer, secret smiles between us
Our first meeting, you'd thought they had seen us
We both tried explaining
Then it started raining
Then you said, "I love you, girl," and then
"I'm much too old to fall in love again."

I thought I had posted this before, but I couldn't find it.  Maybe it was in the previous (non-searchable) version of HHW.  Anyway, the song is from a version of Aspects of Love that was written shortly after Cats.  Originally it was supposed to have had lyrics by Tim Rice...to get him and ALW back together again, but the re-partnering fell through.  These lyrics were written by Trevor Nunn.  When the whole project was abandoned, most of the music from that version of Aspects of Love went into what is now known as The Phantom of the Opera (plus a little of "The Girl of the Golden West"). ;)

I've just come across something that's a little scary.

I thought, and I think der Brucer is under the impression, that the tix he got us for Assassins were for the first night of previews.

Going over the Roundabout's website, I'm not sure they're having previews.  It looks very much like they go right into regular performances.

But that's ridiculous.  He can't have gotten tix for opening night!

Can he?

I can't remember exactly, but I just think the Roundabout doesn't call their previews previews.  I think there's an "official" opening night, though, but I could be wrong.  Then again, I could be right.

I'm back. In the last hour, did some writing, some TV watching, some e-mail answering, some phone talking -- and I'm still not tired. Went to bed really late last night, got up really early this morning, so I should be exhausted. But I'm not. Strange, but true, Dear Readers. I guess I'll stick around until the notes come up and be a late night denizen. If I lived in the nation's capital, would I be a Denizen Washington? And are the early morning posters Denizens Day? If I were jumping up and down would I be Denizen Hopper?

This late night denizen is laughing (ruefully). Just opened a thick letter from the CBC that had been lying unopened on my desk. Inside was a long list of sitcom episodes I had written. Residual city, man! Then I looked at the letter enclosed with the list. The CBC accounting dept. apologizes for the "grave accounting error" they committed by overpaying me last year, so they're now deducting the sum from any upcoming residuals - including this one. Hear me laughing? I laugh and laugh.
