Title: THE DAY FROM HELL
Post by: bk on October 02, 2008, 12:05:06 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were very long, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently creating a new username - cows2.

BK...after you locked yesterday's day of posts, I noticed that I still have a Delete button for my posts.  That's interesting.

I'm sure there are lots of weirdnesses - make a list and e-mail them as you find them, so I can add them to my list.

I guess our GUESTS gave up on us - hopefully they'll be back tomorrow.

Are those with new usernames getting the "new" icon when there are new posts?

Are those with new usernames getting the "new" icon when there are new posts?

I get the "new" icon on the list of days...on the Daily Discussions page, but not within a day of posts.

Also, the calendar (http://www.haineshisway.com/community/index.php?action=calendar) on the old board is still accessible.

Good night. :)

So you're not getting the "new" icon - can you please check the profile preferences and see if there's something there to tick, otherwise add it to your list.

I see Dear Reader Laura but I know she can't post until she comes up with a new username, that is until the old usernames are once again usable.

Now Laura should be able to post to her heart's content.  Read yesterday's posts, Laura, for tips on how to use your profile settings so the board looks and acts like you're used to.

Very slow posting - but that seems to be the norm for some reason at this hour - usually that way every night at this time.

Oh, poop!  (That's poop spelled backwards.)  I just realized that, with the new e-mail address required, any notification that I've recieved a personal message will show up there and not where I belong, which is here.

What happened yesterday.  Well, I went to work.

I did all my billing clerk first day of the week stuff.

And I loaned Jeff, from the Deli, Torchwood Season One.  Jeff is an absolutely marvelous person of the homosexual persuasion - in this town, that's not all that unusual - who for some bizarre reason doesn't have cable TV where he lives.  Instead, he reads a lot, and watches DVDs a lot.  Which makes for a marvelous combination, for him.

Anyway, Jeff decided that John Barrowman, the lead actor in Torchwood, is absolutely dreamy (a word he also applies to Colin Ferguson of EUReKA), and wanted to borrow the discs for the first season.  I told him it would be much better if he first watched Doctor Who, seasons one and two, since that explains Barrowman's character and sets up the spinoff series.  He was suspicious, at first, but agreed.

And he's fallen in love with the show!  I had a hunch he would.

So, yesterday, since he's finished with Series One and Two of Doctor Who, I loaned him Torchwood, Series One.  He was thrilled.

But Niki, his boss at the Deli, was in the room, and wanted to know what was going on.

Niki, it turns out, was very much a Doctor Who fan back in the days that Peter Davison was playing the Doctor.  (Guess who she thinks is dreamy!)  While she'd heard Debbie and myself discussing the new, revived series (Debbie being another clerk who is now addicted to the show, thanks to me!), but for some reason it hadn't sunk in with Niki that the show had been revived.

So, Jeff started insisting that Niki watch the new stuff.  And I told her that yes, it really is that good.

Today I'll be loaning her the discs for the first series.

Doctor Who - taking over the Rehoboth Beach Super Giant, one associate at a time!  Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!!!

And then I came home, and we had really thick pork chops for dinner, which I roasted in the oven so they were nice and tender, and then we watched Pushing Daisies, which is so not the sequel to Please Don't Eat the Daisies, and then I went to bed.  The end.

You have to tick the box in your profile that defaults to keeping you in the subject. I forget how its listed but its relatively straightforward when you see it - heck, I figured it out!

It appears that you can see the avatars and post totals even if you are not logged in, which certainly didn't used to be the case.

  Show board descriptions inside boards.
Show child boards on every page inside boards, not just the first.
  Don't show users' avatars.
  Don't show users' signatures.
X  Return to topics after posting by default.
X  Don't warn on new replies made while posting.
X  Show most recent posts at the top.
X  Show most recent personal messages at top.

In modify profiles these are the "x'd" items are the boxes I ticked, and the board now looks and feels almost like the last one

Well, the PM boxes appear to still exist.  I just can't figure out how you access them.

Hmm...I have my email address set to "hidden" in my profile...so the email icon in my posts should not be there.  Especially since I had to use an alternate email address to re-register, which I don't check very often.

Good posts and bad posts
I've seen 'em all and my dear
We're still here
Happy and sad posts
And some posts that simply are queer
And we're here
We've had the Vicar
He's the best
Things that are sicker
Meet the test
If you're a user or just a GUEST
Give a cheer
'Cause we're alive and posting
And we're here.

Oy.

Last night i was so excited to be able to post. But i didn't realize i would only be able to post once!

I was having the same problems as DR George. I re-registered. The only main problem with that for me is that it would not accept my email address. So i had to use one that i don't normally check. So if i get an IM i won't see it in my email.

The thing i miss most is being able to see the users currently on the site. And the quick reply button.

Yes, but now we have that peculiar logo, which is either a metronome with a javelin through its top, a defunct windmill or a seesaw.

I'll never remember who I am or what addresses or passwords I've used if I have to re-register for each post.

As long as I can at least check the posts as they come in (which was even iffy at one point yesterday), I'm OK.

I spent yesterday being good to my ankle.  I had overdone it over last weekend, and I'm a volunteer and also participating in the AIDS Walk this coming Sunday, so I'm going to be on my feet for many hours, and I'm trying to be sensible (not my strongest point).

I had made great strides trying to get back some momentum in going through papers.  I had tried the day before but just couldn't concentrate on what I was doing so did errands instead.

Actually, I looked up a lot of clips on YouTube yesterday which was very fun.  One musical number or person just kept leading to another.  I watched everything from "Put the Blame On Mame" to "Stereophonic Sound."

Yesterday's day from hell here was nothing.

We were having a family dinner for the Jewish holidays and my niece was watching tv on my bed. Well she screams for me to come and my whole system had gone down (it's called illico, sort of like tivo).

I asked her if she had done anything. And she was sort of rolling on the remote. So i figured she had just rolled over on it. I tried to reboot the system but nothing. She was quite upset (at not getting to watch her program and thinking she had broken it).

It turns out the whole city had this problem (well anyone who has this system).

Thankfully they were able to reboot my machine at 7:58pm. So i got to record pushing daisies and so you think you can dance canada.

It was sort of upsetting though during the dinner. Cause i didn't know what the problem was (their lines were jammed).

Well, that DID work, so I guess I'm back.

Yesterday, I did my usual viewing. I work on CLICK AND CLACK'S AS THE WRENCH TURNS (which I found more promising than successful). I watched LOST and CSI: NY last night, neither as good as last week's episode.

I also found time to watch IRON MAN again which I thoroughly enjoyed except for that silly rbot fighting ending that's completely anticlimactic.

Matt read the earlier posts - it will tell you what settings in your profile to change to have things working the way they used to.  I had a response from the software guy, and I really don't know how I could have been clearer, but he came, opened an account and was able to post so he somehow thought everything was fine.  I've sent a new message that once again clarified what the problem really is - hopefully he'll understand that.

I did not get into this season's PROJECT RUNWAY.  I watched three episodes and none of the designers perked my interests.  Tivo is continuing to record the show, but I might jsut put a stop to that.

BTW, I guess the show will be remaining on Bravo?  Does this also mean it will stay in NYC and not move to LA?

I have sent a new volley of e-mails to Bakalor (who may or may not be done trying to help - haven't heard from him today), to one of the heads of the software company, and to the guy who's been helping us.  Hopefully, someone will respond.  Someone on their chat board answered my help post and he pretty much confirmed what most of us suspect - that there's something in the permissions page that allows only one post from our old usernames, then disallows further posts.  I've sent everyone the link to the permissions page, and this guy's response.  But they move verrrrry slowly.

Wow!  I can see my IP address!

So I can modify old posts without a "modified" time stamp?

There are now two ways to modify a post.  One is to click the "Modify" button at the top right of each post (like before), and now there's also a button at the bottom right within your posts...this one:

that (for me, at least) if I use this to modify the post, I've gotten the "modified" time stamp at the bottom of my post.  I'd modified this post two times using the "Modify" button at the top right and no "modified" time stamp has appeared, that I can see.  But on the third time, I got the "modified" time stamp message.  That's weird.

I've checked the box and unchecked it and checked it again, always saving my changes but nothing works. I guess I can live with it. It just means a possible increase in spam in my Yahoo box.

DR Ben - I'm still catching up on this morning's posts, but when I view your profile, your e-mail address listed as "hidden".  I guess whenever the registered member views their own profile, nothing shows up as "hidden", but as long as the checkbox is ticked it is.  Or something to that effect.

Thursday morning greetings!  Today is the first day of the rest of our lives.

Guests may now post without registering?  Interesting.

Hi, Jane,

That was Dear Ginny who re-registered at work and when she saw that her IP address was visible (even though it's only visible to the person using it and the administrator) she decided to delete the account. She did that after she posted. That's why it shows up as Guest. A guest cannot post without registering but if a person registers, posts and then deletes ther account the posts stay and that person becomes a Guest.

THEN...you must click on Account Related Settings where, at the bottom, you must enter your password in order for the changes to take effect.

DON'T FORGET that nothing changes until you've done that last step.

And as for Yesterday... Well...

-Slept in until Noon(!?!?!?)...
-Late afternoon lunch at Shake Shack (http://www.shakeshacknyc.com) - 'Shroom Burger, Apple-Rosemary Frozen Custard
-Discovered a new chocolate shop, L'Atelier du Chocolat (http://www.egchocolates.com) - a true sliver of a place that's only been open for two months.  Sampled one of their 72% Cocoa Chocolate Truffles - Tres delicieux!, and bought a four-piece assortment (basil(!), citronelle, praline and pistachio) -- which is still intact!
-Stopped back into Madeleine Patisserie (http://www.chow.com/places/5385) just to peek at the daily assortment of macarons, as well as to pick up a slice of their almond brioche toast for last night's dessert.
-Then it was a TV night: "Pushing Daisies", "Project Runway", "Top Design"... and some other shows that I need to clear off the DVR later today.

As for the varying sizes of the avatars, I believe it's related to the resolution of that the avatar was saved in.  So...

And since your "old" avatar is still attached to your "old" screenname, it's not accessible.  -However, I do like the having a choice of famous actors to use as an avatar.  ;)

They sent the RIGHT person home on TOP DESIGN last night - although I am entirely over Wisit and his flat opera singing - and sabotaging of other designers with his own ideas....then last night it was an individual challenge, and I really like his room the best....go figure.

As far as I am concerned, though, he should have gone home instead of Kerry during the window challenge....oh well.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

ON PROJECT RUNWAY, I thought they should have dumped the obnoxious Kelly who finally learned from everyone what a horror she is.

I hope her parents recorded every episode so that she can see exactly what kind of personality she has that they are all responding to.  I feel sorry for because I think she's been emotionally damaged in her life, but I'm not sorry enough to wish her well.  She created all her own misery and the other folks' reactions toward her.

Even when Tim invited her into the group hug and asked for "bygones", she just sat there starting stupidly at him.

I've seen the Bryant Park runway shows for all four of them (plus Suede's and Joe's).  The narrator on each doesn't know who was in contention for winner of the show and who wasn't, and that included Joe and Suede.  Interestingly enough, the narrator was convinced that neither Joe nor Suede was anywhere near good enough to have been in the finals.  Of the final four, it was interesting to see the works and to hear the narrator's assessment.

How the judges of the show will rate their collections, though, is anybody's guess.

Well I have various and sundried items to review, including Horatio Hornblower (which I'm very much enjoying, kind of surprising myself) and the new Blu-Ray of Season 4 of Grey's Anatomy, which I'm finding annoying, probably more a function of my increased irascibility and curmudgeonliness (not to mention I know one of the Executive Producers and could tell many a story, oh, yes, many a story).

Here's an FAQ-type question:

When I was registering, with a different name, I used the e-mail address for my home account (which is the one I have with my old account name).   The system would not allow me to finish registering because my e-mail address was "associated with another user."

Did anyone else have this issue arise?  I created this account using my work address, but I'm truly not comfortable doing that and wonder what the "fix" is.

Yes.

The "fix" is either to go back eventually to our old profiles, or to get another email address that you are more comfortable using.  Yahoo and Google Gmail offer free accounts.

I did the long jog, and have been on gmail IMing with the guy who thinks he can help us, Mr. Fix-It.  But he wants to take a back-up of everything before he actually tries a couple of things he thinks might be the problem.  So, I'm trying to get him into the place where one can do that and am awaiting some info from our web host, which is slow in coming.

As for the varying sizes of the avatars, I believe it's related to the resolution of that the avatar was saved in.  So...

And since your "old" avatar is still attached to your "old" screenname, it's not accessible.  -However, I do like the having a choice of famous actors to use as an avatar.  ;)

I was able to use my previous avatar without any changes.

Yep everyone had this same problem.

To me the reason why it sucks is because PMs used to go directly to my email. But i don't check the email address i re-registered with. So if anyone sees my email (which i tried to hide) or PMs me i will not see it in my email.

What i don't get is why didn't the software people notify you that they were updating their stuff. I mean even if they didn't know for sure that it would screw up HHW. You'd think they would have told you!

Shouldn't the kid be in school??

I agree it sounds funny that a 16 year old is the helper. But if he's a computer genius and can fix the problem ... then i guess it doesn't matter. :)

Although to me the funny part is that he told you he's 16.

Good Afternoon!

DR Ben - As for my avatar - Actually, I was able to use my "old" avatar:

Forum -> Forum Profile Information -> Click on "Personalized Picture", then select and/or try to remember the name of your "old" avatar.  -Or just pic an Actor or Musician.  ;)

*As for the difference in avatar sizes, I believe the issue may have something to do with the Admin Settings in regards to sizing of avatars that are uploaded by site members.  Since the previous avatars are already on the server, they are not being resized.  -I also checked the SMF help forum, and that does seem to be the "issue" - not "problem".  ;)

Thanks for the explanation.  I figured out part 1 & 2, didn't know how someone could post as a guest.

Okay, he thinks he knows what the problems - certain member things didn't get carried over, so I've got him all the info to get into the control panel and hopefully he'll now be able to fix things.  In the meantime, if singdaw is around, I believe he'll be able to post under his own name - if he'll try and let me know what happens that would be great.  The pro guy fixed his name.

Jane:  Click on your name.  Look at the column on the left under Modify Preferences.  Click on Look and Layout Preferences.  I recommend that the bottom four boxes have the first two checked and the last two unchecked.

THEN...you must click on Account Related Settings where, at the bottom, you must enter your password in order for the changes to take effect.

DON'T FORGET that nothing changes until you've done that last step.

Thanks for the details.  I hope it worked.

Now that you have someone working on the site, if you choose to, you could probably delete lots and lots and lots of our "members" mostly Russian or Eastern European bots that were able to register because we had no capture screen to keep them out. If you sort the Member List by post and go to Page 7 you see that from there to Page 685 all members listed have no posts. It's pretty easy to tell which are bots and fake members. They could be deleted freeing up room on the server (that stuff is stored just like the real member information). Since we now have the capture screen to slow down/prevent fake member registrations it might be worthwhile to go down to 185 members (the number of registered members who have actually made a post, including the new registrations today) instead of 20528 of which 20,343 have never posted and most likely never will.

Just my 2 Cents

Since we now have the capture screen to slow down/prevent fake member registrations it might be worthwhile to go down to 185 members (the number of registered members who have actually made a post, including the new registrations today) instead of 20528 of which 20,343 have never posted and most likely never will.

Just my 2 Cents

I think that this is a good idea, too...assuming that they're able to do that. :-\

If they have full privileges they should be able to do anything. One would think so anyway.

Hey folks, especially Bruce who has access to the administrators, Ginny wanted me to mention this.

on the “new” HHW guests (aka lurkers) can see photos and link to profile information including e-mail addresses if they are not hidden.  I think that was available only to logged-in registered users before.

She knows because she has been "lurking" at work.

I think if that option can be changed it will be for the better. We know lots of people lurk here and it's a different world nowadays. Making it more difficult to access our personal information is a good thing.

I was hoping and yearning for fixes to be in place when I came back this afternoon. Oh, well.

Please be patient - this stuff is HARD.  And if you've gone into your preferences and just ticked those few boxes, everything should be working pretty close to normal.  We'll be fine - wish singdaw were here to let us know if his old name is now working.

DR Ginny asked me - DR Ben may have already done so -  to post this about the site's current status:

Would one of you mention on the “new” HHW that guests (aka lurkers) can see photos and link to profile info?  I think that was available only to logged-in registered users before.  Thanks for explaining to folks about my guest post.  I should have deleted the post before deleting my account.  Ah, well.

Yes, it is difficult and considering how long it takes at my job to get some things done I think we've made amazing progress today. This is not said to bash anyone, just an acknowledgement of the difficulties of putting up new software without any beta testing period.

Thanks for getting things together and making changes happen Bruce!  :-*

They now have all the fixes I've asked them to make - the first order of business is fixing the main problem, which he has now totally isolated - seems that our registered users were broken into various groups and 210 were in a group 9, which, when we switched, became problematic.  Therefore, no permissions.  I suspect that the 210 are all people who've posted over the years.  He suggested several fixes for the problem and I told him to do whatever he thought best.

I have so much to do but I want to watch the debates, too!

Anyway, I am coming up to NY for a very brief trip tomorrow, 2 nights only, to meet with the director I'm working with on the Mercer project. My schedule is totally up in the air, which makes it hard to plan anything, but I think I will know more once I get up there. I'll be staying down in the village, Greg will be home with the kitties. So I'm hoping there will be windows of opportunity to catch up with FLJ, Elmore, Jose & Ben (I'll be near his place). Singdaw and Vixmom, I'm afraid to plan anything too far in advance since you're not as close but if there's a time when I know I don't have to be somewhere I would love to see any and all!

Just got the notice that the big problem has been fixed.  Thank the LORD!  Fixing other things is going to be a bit more difficult, as they're expecting me or Bakalor to do it, but that won't be happening, at least from me, and I think Mark is pretty much out of it for now.  But let me go tell the guy that it's working.

Hi DR Cillaliz.  Are you feeling better?

Hi Jane, yes, I'm feeling better. I still have a cold but had a really productive day at work without taking cold medicine.  The Nyquil last night helped me get some sleep.  It's starting to bug me again, but I think I caught it before it got too bad.  Thanks for asking

Oh my...too much to learn in too short of a time!

I don't understand how you're still on your old profile!

Good observation Cilla, now if only there were an easier way to spot who is here that is currently posting. ;)

Looks like the little scroll thingy is bright green if you are online

I'm online, but it's white on my computer.  I think it depends on whatever color scheme you might be using for another program on your computer.  I have a Windows white and blue scheme and it applies to HHW, as well.

So do I, I'm looking at the PM button that's under your photo. If  you're online it's bright green, if you aren't it's like the green light was shut off...or something like that

Go into your profile, select "Modify Profile" and then "Forum Profile Information".  There you will find a cache of photos.  Go to the photo you want and select it.  I did that and it resized my photo.  I had to go through the procedure of saving by entering my password at the bottom of the "Account Related Settings" page.

Speaking of PMs, currently, the top of the screen says that I have 18 messages...HOWEVER, when I went to the old board, there were only 15 messages.  How did I get 3 extra messages??  They are 3 from Elmore from 2006.  I don't mind having them but I don't need the information anymore.

There also isn't any kind of notice that says, "Your Inbox is 60% (or whatever %) full.  Does that mean it's unlimited??

I've just written the guy who fixed it, and asked him to do four more things - that will probably be it for awhile.  I'm sure that this new software has some good things that come with it, like maybe unlimited message space in your PM box.  I've still asked him to fix it so guests can't see profile info - maybe he has?  And it sounds like there's now a workaround to get the pix right, so see the post above on this page on how to do it.

My avatar is not in that cache of avatars it seems, perhaps because my avatar is just a link to my on-line photo album. I am guessing I need to actully download it onto HHW, rather then link.

I'm back to small.  I clicked on I have my own picture & then used browse.  I don't see any other photos to chose from.

Bruce I did do what Ron suggested, but I didn't know which of the three choices was correct, and the only photo I add was my squished avatar.

What, exactly, is the procedure for finding "today's column" with this new format?  Do I need to retain the old URL?

Yes, you can't get there from here anymore - and I doubt that will get fixed.  It's the usual address, www.haineshisway.com, AND the link at the end of the notes should now bring you to the new board.

Jane, if you go to your profile and reselect your avatar, you will be big again...well you should be big again

If you go to your Profile to re-select your avatar you have to go to Personalized Picture. If you know what the avatar is called you can scroll down to it and choose it and it should be full size. If you don't know you may be able to guess what it is from seeing the titles of various pictures. Also, as you highlight the avatar names they appear on the left in the size they will appear on the screen.

Look, this is new and improved software - yes, it changes some things and the look, and no, Bakalor won't go in and restore links to the notes and the radio show because he is just not doing that anymore - hopefully we'll get the Calendar and the Who's Online buttons back, as that's in preferences somewhere in the control panel, but if you see things in e-mail (a function I don't even know about on this site) or where your PMs, are, take a deep breath and just get used to the new deal, because there's no going back.  It happens whenever ANY site upgrades their software - Facebook just became the "new" Facebook - people hate it, violently, but they're not changing it back and everyone is just getting used to it in its new form.

Kerry, look at my post just above yours and I've explained, I hope, how to see the various avatars. You should log out and log in as your old self when you do it so you can attach that avatar to your old profile (or it may not have been removed from your old profile so you won't have to do anything).

Bruce, I think you should trust yourself more and go in and change this stuff yourself.  It's not rocket science--I have message boards and forums (fora?) on my site and most of the Admin stuff is easy-peasy, most of it is simply checking off option boxes.

BTW, the annoying "LOADING" error is still popping up when you try to quote when you have the Quick Reply box up.  That would be my first request to get fixed.

Hmm, not to contradict you fine sir out in the great Northwest, but I don't get the loading error. I did get it early on in the day but I don't get it now. I quoted you with the Quick Reply box open. Anyone notice a way to reverse the order they appear?

Rosh Hashana begins the High Holy Days and they go through to Yom Kippur, a 10-day event. Many people only observe the beginning of Rosh Hashana and then Yom Kippur but depending on how observant you are you may extend your days ending with atoning on Yom Kippur.

Hmm... I get the "LOADING" message... But it's not an "error".  ???

Well I believe it is indeed an error, for two reasons--you need to then scroll back up to whatever message you're quoting and hit quote a second time, and then when you hit "post" you get a red error message.  So, yes, it is an error.

I finished watching all of the bonus features on the LE DOULOS DVD. They're OK. More surprised that there was only a leaflet in the case rather than a full booklet. Criterion used to do leaflets like this, and maybe they're returning to this now. I have another Melville disc here that I'll get to in a day or two.

Next I watched CHARLIE CHAN IN PANAMA. I had seen it before, and I rememebred it distinctly since I remember that I got the identity of the murderer right the first time I saw this off the Fox Movie Channel. So, I was able to keep an eye on this character to see what was being done. The transfer looks very nice.

Actually I thought it was the last 5 that went to Byrant Park. And we see clips of them saying they deserve it.

Well I think they should start production earlier so that the actual three show and there is no need for decoys and they have to wait for a live results final.

So we won't be able to get to the Radio Show from here either. We will have to go from the Main Page.

Until it's added here, you can still go to www.haineshisway.com/community to get to the calendar and everything else on the old board.

BTW, the annoying "LOADING" error is still popping up when you try to quote when you have the Quick Reply box up.  That would be my first request to get fixed.

JMK, what you could also do (it's what I did) is go into your profile, click on "Look and Layout Preferences," then near the bottom there's the option "Use quick reply on topic display."  Set it to "show, off by default."  This gives you a toggle link that you have to manually open the quick reply box, but you don't get any error message, nor does it automatically make your quote appear in the quick reply box.  It takes you to the regular quote box, like it used to. :)
