Title: A MONDAY KIND OF MONDAY
Post by: bk on October 06, 2008, 12:20:41 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were very Monday-like, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're feeling like it's a Monday kind of Friday and they're too confused to come home.

And the word of the day is: AGRARIAN!

Many folks don't realize that Hammerstein's first draft was "The Agrarian and the Cowman Must Be Friends."

Have to run but wanted to tell you that Sheena killed a snake!  It was a black snake which makes it both good and bad.  Black snakes are non poisonous but they are endangered and really don't hurt anything.  In fact, they are a good snake because they eat rats and such.

Have a good day all!

TOD:

Red Skelton and Lucille Ball in DUBARRY WAS A LADY, especially in the "Crepe Suzettes" song/

Lucille Ball herself in THE FULLER BRUSH GIRL....

But hmmmmm.....Jerry Lewis in THE ERRAND BOY and THE LADIES MAN.

Jim Carrey can be funny, but sometimes he is bit frantic for my taste...I really liked him in THE MASK.  Seth Rogan is also funny in a couple of movies.

ALL TIME favorite comedian in the movies?  Groucho Marx followed closely by Bob Hope.....

FOOD PORN!

Mark Boster / Los Angeles Times
FOREST OF CHOICES: Shimeji, left, king trumpets, center, hen of the woods, back right, are making their way to major markets.

LATIMES (http://www.latimes.com/features/food/la-fo-calcook1-2008oct01,0,985392.story)

Quote
Once-exotic mushrooms -- king trumpets, maitake and shimeji -- get ready to rise on Southern California turf
...
Agaricus mushrooms are so popular because they are so easy to grow. Though plants grow in the earth, mushrooms are grown on different bases, called substrates. Sometimes this is very simple. Agaricus will thrive even on straw.

Other mushrooms such as oysters and shiitakes grow on dead logs, making them only a little more difficult to cultivate. The specialty mushrooms Hokto is growing take that a step further, growing on a specially composed substrate -- primarily sawdust, ground corncobs and wheat and rice bran.

The holy grail of fungi culture is the cultivation of such treasured wild mushrooms as chanterelles, porcini, morels and truffles. Though experiments are ongoing and hope springs eternal, this is an exceedingly difficult process because these are mycorrhizal mushrooms. That means they grow only in community with the root systems of living trees, something that is much harder to manage on a commercial scale.

Waste not, want not

OF COURSE, farming mushrooms is nothing new. They've been cultivated for centuries and the introduction of large-scale mushroom growing in the U.S. dates to the 1890s.

It started in the little town of Kennett Square, Penn. -- not far from Philadelphia -- where a Quaker carnation grower named William Swayne began growing mushrooms in the dark areas under the growing tables in his greenhouses.

Because of the town's proximity to the major markets of Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Boston and New York, this soon became a thriving regional business.

It was also a pioneer in recycling. In those days, most public transportation was by horse, and cleaning up after the beasts was a major problem in urban areas. Since these fungi grow well on straw and manure, the wagons would leave Kennett Square loaded with mushrooms and return loaded with the material with which to grow more.

To this day, even though transportation is not the same sort of issue and horse manure is no longer widely used for growing, Pennsylvania still accounts for more than half of all the cultivated mushrooms grown in the United States. California ranks second with less than 20%.

Good morning, all!  I have very little to report so far. I've got the bedding in the laundromat down the street and this morning I'm winterizing my bedding.  I know that as soon as I do Indian summer will strike and I'll be sorry I did this.

At 11 I have a long call with a copyist friend about the likes, dislikes and corrections to the HUCK FINN score. Tonight, I'm having dinner with my friend Bruce Pomahac at O'Neal's and then we're seeing this Schmidt-Jones tribute at Merkin Hall.

It's time to spray a bit of pesticide around the apartment before I head back to the laundromat.

As for LIFE being on 2 mondays and also on fridays.

The reason why i was confused is because on Global (the canadian channel i watch it on) there was no mention at the end of the shows which days it would be on.

I really think they should have done 2 mondays and then moved it to fridays. IT is too confusing to do monday and friday in the same week (they should have repeated the monday show on friday if they wanted to show it that day).

Hopefully on NBC they explained it better at the end of the shows.

BK re: DR Jose's comments about your weight loss and your body going into starvation mode.

I could be mistaken but i would think that it's not because you're not eating enough calories. But rather the one meal a day thing. I'm not sure if you really do that. But as DR Elmore's success shows more small meals a day is much better for your body.

To me it seems like the reason you are losing weight is because of all the exercise you're getting. BUt it would probably help so much more if you had a bunch of little meals vs only one meal a day (which is so bad for your body).

Personally i'm still not at my goal. But a lot of my clothes are fitting. so i've been splurging on the weekends quite a bit. My mom made chicken noodle soup. And her and my niece made chocolate chip cookies. Very yummy!

One thing re: the whose online list at the top.

I was reading yesterday's posts. And there is a separate listing for who is reading today's posts vs yesterday's posts vs when you are just sitting on the discussions page.

On the old board we used to just have who is online and it would show everybody.

For example it showed that me and DR MattH were reading yesterday's posts. So anyone reading today's posts would not see us as being on the board (at the top).

But when i didn't go into an actual day's posts it showed like 7 people were on the board!

I really slept late this morning which I obviously needed, but I've been scurrying through my usual morning activities as a result. Glad to hear about GOODBYE MR. Glad to hear about GOODBYE MR. CHIPS (wonder if they'll locate the snipped material from the original roadshow version) and especially FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, which I like to torment Betsy with by showing her the scene where the idiot Collie leads all the sheep off the cliff.  Of course I maintain our late collie Ethel was the stupidest dog ever, but Betsy loved her like no other.

I'd love for LORD JIM to finally get released, too.  Love that Kaper score with all the Gamelan stuff.

According to the press release, CHIPS will be the intact roadshow version.

MADDING CROWD will be the uncut international version, not the version that played the US.

So... I know we're not supposed to talk the P-Word here on HHW - Politics, that is - but...

-And this is essentially a bi-partisan - well, actually non-partisan issue, question, query...

It's been interesting reading some of the analyses of the Vice Presidential Candidates debate - as well as some of the continued follow-up of the first Presidential Candidates debate.  I keep reading about how some people are "frustrated" that they didn't learn anything new about the candidates... How they were hoping to see if either candidate had a change in opinion or policy about a particular issue.  Well...

Now that we're just a month away from the Election, wouldn't you hope that there would be no changes in opinions or policy on either side?   Unless someone ends up having a major slip of the tongue, or something unseemly is brought up from their past, I would think that both sides would "simply" be standing by and on their platforms and continuing to spread the word about their platform.  There really should be no "shocking" news at this point in the race.  Right?

Yes or No?

-I do know there is still the "Undecided" portion of the electorate, but I'm not referring to them.  ;)

*bk - You can ask and choose to delete this post, but I really am looking for just "Yes" or "No" answers.  -And if anyone would care to elucidate, they can just PM me with their prose.

The roadshow version of Far From the Madding Crowd ran 168 minutes.  The only other longer cut listed on the imdb is 170 minutes.  So, the uncut International version runs two minutes longer than the US version.  Chips and Madding Crowd are cause for celebrating - except they're from Warners and I think we all know by now that the color will be off.  The only way it can be escaped is if this release is like the recent western set, where they just didn't give a crap about the transfers at all and put up whatever source they had and didn't do anything - hence, a couple had decent color.

Sad news to report: Actor Robert Arthur has passed away. I remember him best in the teen film YOUNG AND WILD (1958) opposite my good friend Carolyn Kearney. He certainly was a lot older then I thought...he played teenagers right up into his mid 30s!

Robert Arthur, 83, a youthful-looking actor who had supporting roles in such 1940s and '50s films as "Twelve O'Clock High," "Just for You" and "Hellcats of the Navy," died of congestive heart failure Wednesday at his home in Aberdeen, Wash., said his friend Harold Fairbanks.

Also known as Bob, he was born Robert Paul Arthaud on June 18, 1925, in Aberdeen. After high school, he served in the Navy, then went to Hollywood looking for work as an actor.

He was cast in bit parts in Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox films, and then got what he considered his big break in the 1948 western "Green Grass of Wyoming," part of the "My Friend Flicka" series.

Soon after came a series of supporting roles in military dramas, including "Twelve O'Clock High" with Gregory Peck (1949), "Air Cadet" (1951), "Take the High Ground!" (1953) and "Hellcats of the Navy" with Ronald Reagan (1957).

Arthur also appeared in "September Affair," a drama starring Joseph Cotten and Joan Fontaine (1950); "Ace in the Hole," the 1951 film noir starring Kirk Douglas; and "Just for You," a 1952 musical starring Bing Crosby, Jane Wyman and featuring Natalie Wood.

Arthur had some parts in TV productions, including "The Lone Ranger," but left acting in the 1960s. In 1991, he returned to guest star as the minister who marries Jesse and Becky on the TV sit-com "Full House."

While his acting career was on the shelf, Arthur bounced around to several jobs before becoming an insurance salesman.

He also became an activist for the rights of gay senior citizens and was involved with the Log Cabin Club for gay Republicans.

It did turn out to be a beautiful day. We were going to McDonalds for a quick lunch but were stopped at the door by policemen. It had been robbed a few minutes before we arrived!

We went to Wendys which is right next door.

I managed to watch 3 1/4 more episodes of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. While most of the cases start off interestingly, they kind of drag in the telling. Mark Lenard was the primary guest star in the last full episode I watched.

Watched POLLYANNA last night on TCM.  It's kind of interesting that Walt Disney had confidence in both his film and in the kids of the time period that he let the running time go over 120 minutes.  How many kid movies today barely make it over 90?

I am beginning to think about today's foodstuffs?  I had a thought to make sauteed chicken, mushrooms, and onions, but I don't really feel like cooking and dicing and slicing.  I'm rather bored of Gelson's, and Von's deli case isn't very good.  I could make ham steak and eggs, but that's cooking, too.  I could go over to the Studio Cafe and have poached eggs and an English muffin and a salad, or a salad and my barbecue chicken sandwich.  I could get takeout from somewhere - so many choices.

But what will you be eating tomorrow?

;)

OK... Since I did not step foot out of the apartment at all yesterday - and I really wasnt' trying to be in "hermit mode", it just happened - I shall now sally forth into the Fall afternoon air momentarily.  I do have to make a Duane Reade stop, so, at least I won't be wandering that aimlessly.

Elmore, SCARLET is a different magazine with no connection to SCARLET STREET. They have no rights over SCARLET STREET, nor do they have access to SCARLET STREET'S list of subscribers.

Richard Valley, The editor and owner of SCARLET STREET died, and the rights to that magazine, and anything connected to it now belong to his family who are not interested in continuing the magazine.

If you e-mail Kevin Shinnick, who is one of the editors of the new magazine, SCARLET, and let him know you had a subscription to SCARLET STREET he will be happy to do something for you, however.

Now get a grip!

I say "No", if I have to chose one over the other, as I would liked to have seen some surprises.  I agree your question is non-partisan & a detailed reply should be safe, but I'll PM you anyway.

DR CILLA LIZ, how did it go in court today?

As expected.  The judge ran his 2- 10 yr and 1-5 year sentences all consecutively. So he got 25 years.  He could have had a mandatory minimumof 5 years, but the prosecutor didn't put it in the trial information and the issue of whether there was a dangerous weapon didn't go to the jury, so he has no minimum.  The way it works in Iowa is he can be paroled from one sentence to the next before the first expires.  My guess is he'll do less than 10 years.

I'm sorry, I forgot to ask.

The judge did say that no matter what the jury decided, he believed the government proved at least felony murder...that's first degree.  Good thing we had a jury.

DR Ron Pulliam - As per your earlier query... Leftovers: a bowl of the chicken, spinach and white bean stew I made last night which I splashed with some extra-virgin olive oil and sprinkled with some bacon, lardons, if you will.  And a whole wheat roll I picked up during my earlier perambulations.

Oh!  Lardons!

Don't feel bad Jane, I forgot to mention it.  After the sentencing was over Edith and I went back to the office and packed up the file.  It took up most of a filing cabinet so we put it in bankers boxes.  I don't anticipate an appeal, and if he decides to appeal, I won't be doing it.  As much as I like having those intense cases every once in a while, it always takes a lot out of me and it's always a relief to pack up the file and reorganize the office.  Made me feel great

Glad you are done with it then.  I truly hope he will come out of prison with the ability, and desire, not to repeat the mistakes that got him in trouble in the first place.

I also ran into Paul at the grocery store.  How someone can be as mean as he was then totally blow me off for 2 months and now act like nothing happened defies belief. Luckily I was in too good of a mood to care.  I was civil, but I won't be calling him any time soon. I'm glad that friendship is over.

My friend, Stan, was rushed back to the hospital today.  The nursing home has not kept his incision clean and he developed in infection.  That and not getting enough nutrition or liquids, caused him to suffer renal failure.  He will be in ICU for a couple of days

Omigod!  I did too!  And now, I'm watching something with Judy Kaye and Frank Gorshin. . .it has a score by Cy Coleman . . .and Judy Kaye is a riot!  Oh, a certain Miss Coca also appears. . . .I think she's a nut.

When it came out on DVD several years ago, and I bought it and watched it, that was the first time *I* had ever seen it. I always kept missing it on various TV broadcasts. It is indeed a wonderful screwball comedy.

I was able to finish the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE episode I had started and then watched three more complete episodes. Then I started another and got about 15 minutes in. When I finish the episode I'm watching, I will still have 7 more to watch to complete the set.

Has anyone here read TWILIGHT by stephenie meyer?

It's sort of labelled a teen/thriller. But i think it would only be for very well-read older teens who love to read (it's 500 pages).

My brother-in-law's 20 something cousin recommended it. As have a couple of other people (it's a best seller).

It's a series of 3 more books. I watched DWTS and was going ot watch LIFE. But I was reading. This book is very addicting!

I watched the entire NBC slate of shows tonight, and they all had their best episodes of the new season.

I began with CHUCK, a funny outing with CHUCK coming through with his own talent and resources which I enjoyed seeing. John Larouquette was a bit annoying early on, but later when it was obvious he was going to be no real help, I enjoyed the rest of the cast just fine.

As JR probably knows, the press kept saying it was TWENTIETH CENTURY that Frances costarred with Barrymore in, rather than WORLD PREMIERE, in all of the AP/UPI stories that came out in 1957 when she was "discovered" in San Francisco.

I have my new glasses and for the first time since August 1 the world is in focus. I walked down to 72nd Street  to pick them up on my way to O'Neal's at 65th, where I had a wonderful dinner with Bruce Pomahac. Then we went to see the Schmidt-Jnes presentation, which is a part of the Merkin Hall musical theatre series. The evening was quite wonderful, with Dick Latessa, who won an Obie for playing Philemon, redoing a nmber from PHILEMON, Estelle Parsons performing a "folk song" about the great IRT Race that she had sung in 1959 in a Julius Monk revue. Nick Spangler of THE AMAZING RACE took the night off from THE FANTASTICKS to sing "Soon It's Going To Rain" and "Under The Tree" from CELEBRATION with Betsy Morgan, who was in THE FANTASTICKS last year. Nick and Martin Vidnovic also did "I Can See it."

Susan Watson sang "It Was You," two numbers from COLETTE CLLAGE "Joy" and "The Room Is Filled with You," as well as "Wandrin' Child" which was taken from Harvey's score to the film BADCOMPANY. Karen Ziemba and Vidnovic did several numbers from I DO I DO and "Melisande" and "Simple Things" from 110 IN THE SHADE. Kenneth Kantor was very funny with "Where did It Go?" from CELEBRATION and Donna English from several FORBIDDEN BROADWAYs did a wonderful revue song "I Know Loneliness Quite Well" and "Decorate The Human Face." As a finale 89-year-old Marge Champion and 88-year-old Donald Saddler premiered a new dance to Harry Belafonte's recording of "Try To Remember."

I saw David Shire and Didi Conn after, along with Joe Thalken, Pamela Myers of COMPANY, Walter Willison, my godson Sam who's now 8 feet tall, Sean Flahaven, and a lot of other friends. It was a wonderful night.  The next event on Nov 3 is a Shire and Maltby evening and I told David I'd be there.

Does anyone have the DVD of SINGING IN THE RAIN? If so, how does it look?

I dvr'd the movie off TCM and the whole time it looks kind of out of focus or fuzzy, like I need to be wearing my glasses. I was expecting it to look much sharper. I am just wondering if the DVD release is like that, also.

The DVD of Singin' In The Rain (the Ultra Resolution one) is very sharp and, like all Warners DVDs, too damn brown - it resembles not one whit what the IB Tech prints looked like.

I'm just so restless right now.  I can't sit still.  Perhaps I'm having an anxiety attack.  Part of the reason is my slight dissatisfaction with the CD master - our source material wasn't optimal and I'm very particular about sound, as you know.  The mastering guy did a masterful job, but could only do so much.  However, the rarity of the material is the thing - minimally I'll put something in the booklet about the sound, and it's not horrible, but it's not up to my standards.  And I'm just feeling anxiety about it.

I'm back from Visiting my cousin and his wife in Coquille, Oregon.  The drive down on Friday was pleasant, long and uneventful.  John, my cousin, and Angel have been living in their house for a couple of years, but the house is 102 years old!  It has four bedrooms (we stayed in the two bedrooms upstairs) and only one bathroom.  That wasn't too bad in itself, except that the toilet is right up against the wall...I mean there is probably two inches between the side of the toilet seat and the wall.  That's just toooooo darned close. :P

Yesterday, we left Coquille and went to Portland.  We stayed in Portland one night because my niece, who has been a vegetarian for a couple of years (as has my sister), is starting to "try" becoming a vegan (my sister is not).  In Portland, there is what my niece says is the world's first vegan mini-mall.  It's basically four vegan/vegetarian stores next to each other.  My niece bought a couple of shirts and buttons.  Here's a view from our hotel room:
