Dear Larry is correct,

Enter Laughing (http://www.yorktheatre.org/)

has been extended so I don't have to rush to see it this week. I may just see it this week anyway but now I know I have a day or two extra.

It looks like I will have to use a Playbill discount for The Seagull. It was on TDF until it opened to rapturous reviews. Now it's off TDF. I will continue to check but I can also go to TKTS. It's selling well, but not well enough to sell out. I hear great things about the show and I haven't seen Seagull since probably my college years.

Good morning, all! I'm still thinking about last night's Jones & Schmidt event and how lovely it was. I've got a long phone call this morning with my copyist on the HIUCK FINN scores to go over the last two movements; we got through the first two yesterday, and I'd like to finish the piece today.

DR George, I liked the photos from your weekend trip, and I agree with you that the photo of DRs edisauris, Ben, Jose, and me is quite a good photo of all of us. I usually hate the thought of a camera coming near my mug, but our DR Jose is a wizard.

TOD:  my neighbor Alice introduced me to a great sandwich, which is essentially scrambled egg on heavy bread with watercress, sprouts and ranch dressing; very tasty.  When I wasin grade school my favorite sandwich was my mom's meatloaf on Wonder Bread.

LONG BEACH, Calif.  —  A Long Beach mother who drove her teenage son and his friends to a fatal fight with a rival gang has been convicted of second-degree murder.

A Los Angeles County Superior Court jury returned the verdict against 31-year-old Eva Daley on Monday.

Her 17-year-old co-defendant, Heriberto Garcia, was charged as an adult and convicted of second-degree murder for the June 2007 stabbing death of 13-year-old Jose Cano.

The jury found true special allegations that the defendants committed the crime for the benefit of a criminal gang.

I watched TWENTIETH CENTURY on TCM tonight.  I had never seen it, and it was very funny.  John Barrymore and Carole Lombard were terrific as were all the supporting players....

I watched and enjoyed it, too.  The only problem I had was that I was constantly singing the songs of ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY throughout the movie.

It was kind of fun to hear that there were whole lines in the musical that are lifted from the movie.

DR Jennifer -  I read Stephanie Meyer's Twighlight quartet recently.  It's certainly not great literature, but it was entertaining in an angsty sort of way.

After i posted last night i read more of the first book. And then i really realized why it was advertised as teen romance/drama. I think that a lot of books (i recently read two young adult series by meg cabot) that feature 17-18 year olds as the main characters, with a lot of romance but less sex are put in the teen lit category.

So after realizing this i figured probably most people on this site were not in that demographic.

I still think that a series of 500 page books would not necessarily be for every teen. And i'm sure most of the readers must be 20 somethings and older.

I am enjoying book one. I got it from the library and also have book two waiting.

As for the TWILIGHT series, many people (including myself) will not read them because of their obvious debt to to Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire series featuring Sookie Stackhouse and The Vampire Bill.  Harris covered much of the same territory starting in 2001, right down to the were-people.  Thanks to Alan Ball and HBO, Harris is being discovered by the readers of the TWILIGHT series since TRUE BLOOD has proven to be a popular show.
I know all about horse racing, but the comments at Borders from readers of both have shown that most readers over twenty-one prefer Ms. Harris' work.

Also out today (which I had forgotten about) on DVD is THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY. I've had it on VHS forever, and I haven't ordered this yet. Looks like it would be a good inclusion on my Christmas list. But I'm curious about how the transfer looks. Hopefully it'll be done with care, and the extras with Miss Lansbury should also be interesting.

TOD - and now for something completely different.  I learned to make these sandwiches from my mom:

Shred a pile of sharp (or medium) cheddar cheese and mix with a bottle of chili sauce.  Add chopped ripe olives.  Fill hot dog buns with the mixture and wrap them in pairs in foil.  Chill.  When ready to eat, heat in a 375o oven until filling is heated through.

Great to make ahead and have on hand when you're going to be busy.

Good Morning, All!  I'll have to go back and check out the later posts and pics from yesterday.

Home-made:  Cheese, tomato and either left over real turkey or leftover roast beef

Outside the house:  A Croque Monsieur (That's Mr. Toast or Mr. Crunch to you--- the translation  always cracked me up, but then I'm simple-minded)
There is a British version (usually with a slice of broiled tomato on top that is great because you can get it anywhere from any pub to the Savoy Grille)

A local upscale grocery store has a sandwich counter with the best Creamy Chicken Salad  (huge chunks of chicken breast and lots of mayonnaise and garlic) that is heaven on Sourdough.

My grandmother used to make Pimiento and Cheese sandwiches on white bread that were quite good (although I'll admit I wasn't all that fond of "those funny red things" until I was at least about 9 or 10.  I've never had it since then that tasted like hers (close but not the same).  I don't she had any secret ingredient; I think it was just the fact that she made them.

Favorite at home sandwich:
Dip one side each of two slices of bread into beaten egg.
Grill egg-side down on griddle.
Pile with warm/hot turkey slices and chipped ham.
Top with tomato slices (should be warmed also) and shredded cheddar cheese.
Grill until cheese is melted and egg side of the bread is golden brown.

Favorite eating out sandwich:
Prmanti Bros.' Grilled Reuben - the usual suspects (corned beef, 1000 Island Dressing, Swiss Cheese, Sauerkraut) PLUS French Fries and Cole Slaw.  A real mouthful.

Growing up, I always looked very much forward to summertime and my dad planting his beefeater tomatoes.  Sometimes he'd say he was going to try a different variety, and then I would have to visit a nursery and pick out a couple of beefeater plants to raise on my own.

Didn't realize he was doubling his harvest without increasing his effort because he would plant something else, like squash or okra.

Anyway, my favorite summertime sandwich then, and now, was a thick slice of beefeater (or, today, heirloom) tomato between two slices of bread with mayonnaise.  The tomato is generously peppered with enough salt to taste.  Yummy!

The best sandwich I ever had "out" was when I was in college.  A group of us would go into Asheville NC to a shopping center that had a placed called "The Rathskeller."  They made a wonderful reuben on rye, and they served it with a kosher dill and a side of German potato salad.  Hands down, that was my favorite sandwich meal ever.  I still try to recapture that magic with a reuben order at various delis.  Some are extremely good.  None, however, have German potato salad sides to offer.

I, too, enjoyed "Chuck" last night.  Very much.

"Heroes" was a pleasure, although I'm not fond of "severe Claire".  Her future story must be interesting, as well.   Hiro and Ando played well, I thought, and that final scene was a corker!!

"Life" was bright and breezy and a bit saucy and perky, as well.  I love Damian Lewis' character traits.  It's an interestingly "different" approach to police shows and I hope it catches on with a sizable audience.

I also caught up on, and cleared out of my DVR cache, last week's "Fringe" and "Supernatural."  I had managed to watch most of each show, but nodded off in my chair at the 45- to 50-minute mark on each.  So, all I invested was half an hour and found each show ultimately satisfying and resolved.

Additionally, last week's opening episode of "Pushing up Daisies" was way quirky and fun, with Kristen Chenoweth getting a lovely bit/homage to "Sound of Music".  The show is so cartoonish -- and macabre -- that I feel grateful NBC has seen fit to start a second season of it.

Until such time as "Lost" returns to the airwaves, I have to bluntly state that the highlight of my TV viewing week is "TrueBlood" and Sunday is the day I look most forward to.

Odd, that, since Monday is almost always another work day.  I dreaded Sundays when I was in school, but that was usually because I had all that homework piled up to do before I went to bed.

Now, I simply dread it as the day I probably have to iron some shirts preparatory to dressing for work the next morning.

Even though I haven't made one in a while, I do love a grilled cheese sandwich.  It could be provolone on rye, cheddar on whole wheat (with bacon and tomato), or, for "old times' sake" American on Wonder Bread.

OH! And fried bologna and/or salami!

TOD, Part 2 -

I like reubens too - with either corned beef and/or pastrami (although, there are turkey ones out there too).   My favorite version was the one from the now-closed New York Delicatessen in Richmond, VA.  Just the right amount of meat, just the right amount of melt of the cheese, and they also finished the sandwich with both Russian dressing and a smidgen of tomato paste which added a nice bit of acid to cut through all the "goodness".

I also like a good scoop of chopped liver on pumpernickel.

*I do remember the first time I went to a real New York Deli here in New York City, and ordered a sandwich.  When you order a pastrami on rye, or a turkey on rye, etc., that's what you get: two pieces of bread sandwiching the meat.  No lettuce, no tomato, no condiments.  -And in a lot of places, "rye" is usually understood, or in the some places the default.  I guess I was so used to "fancy sandwiches", that it felt like the counter staff had put no real thought into making my sandwich since it was so plain.  -Then there are places like the Carnegie Delicatessen where when you order a Pastrami on Rye, what comes to your table is a four- to five-inch high pile of meat on rye.

TOD, Part 3 -

The Monte Cristo Sandwich from the US Coast Guard HQ Cafeteria.  I believe Thursdays were Monte Cristo Days when I worked there.  It was the first place I had ever heard of and tried a Monte Cristo, and any version I've tried since has paled in comparison (and in memory).

They made theirs properly on the griddle cooked the French toast'd bread just right, and also heated the Swiss cheese, ham and (the not dried out!) turkey up too.  Then, right before they would hand it to you, they would give it a good sprinkle of powdered sugar, and place a small side cup of jelly or pancake syrup on the plate too.

I've found that a lot of places deep-fry the whole megilla.  No. Others put so much meat and cheese between the bread, that the turkey and ham are still cold, and the cheese has just started to melt by the time it's been served to me.  No.  I've been to other places where they have literally assembled the sandwich by using pieces of prepared, pre-cooked slices of French Toast.  No.  And I remember one unfortunate version which used Virginia ham - the salty(!) stuff - in it... Blech!

So, Mr. Larry Moore, do you know which version of Sound of Music Rodgers & Hammerstein sends out? Do they send the old version and the new version or just the new version? I got the Rebecca Luker revival CD at Academy today and the show has both of Max's songs. Should I also get Miss Martin's version. I know they have made changes to the show working movie songs and scenes into the show but are the changes enough that things surrounding Max are substantially different?

The version that's leased is the original 1960 version with Mary Martin. The renting companies have the option of using "I Have Conidence" and "Something Good" from the film. A lot ofnew productions substitute "Something Good" for "An Ordinary Couple."

DR Jane - As DR DerBrucer stated, the fonts that display are dependent upon which ones are on your system and/or which ones are enabled in your browser.  In fact, none of those fonts in the "Font test" showed up on my screen.  Otherwise...

There is no drop-down menu for fonts.  -Was there one on the "old" board?  So, if you want to change the font, you can still highlight the Red A, but then you will have to replace "Verdana" (which is the default font) with another font name.  In other words, you will have to delete "Verdana" and type in another font name - of course, you have to know the names of the font(s) that you want to display.  -And then hope that other DRs have those fonts on their computers too.

TOD:  There was a deli here for years that we'd go to semi-regularly for awhile (OK about once a week for a few years and then months in-between).  It used to be next to a Thom McCann and got moved to a different building nearby in the 70's.  Their sandwiches were typical... very good, very greasy at times.  But, it was one of the few places where they'd take the time to let you know if the brisket was lean and trim it right for the sandwiches.  A stack of lean brisket, a couple slices of Swiss on an onion roll, an order of fries and Cream Soda, and I was happy!

Back when I was a family man, we often prepared a turkey just for the leftovers. (For a family of 5 an 18lb Turkey is a very economical food choice!)

First of all - "vigegared" - Is that Japanese for "balsamico"? ;)

Secondly - You forgot the crab meat (fake or real stuff) in the California Roll.  And the tobiko or masago is not traditional, or it's only added if the roll is made "inside out" with the rice on the outside.  I usually prefer black sesame seeds on the outside.  *Of course, the "California Roll" itself is not of Japanese origin, so...

Hmm... I've always thought of Potato Bread - at least the stuff you can find at the grocery stores - as a "light bread".  And Potato Bread hot dog buns are my favorite.

As for a heavy or "hearty" bread, I'm guessing a good slice of a pain de campagne, miche or even a crusty sourdough.

Edith has decided that we will be doing some fast walking every noon.  She stopped me this noon as she was heading out the door and said we were going to walk for 10 minutes on the skywalks.  It turned out to be 12 minutes and since she's in good shape it was a fast pace, just right for me, I could talk and walk but any faster and I would have been winded.   With her pushing me, I may really do this.  The next step will be by November 1 - no elevators unless in heels or carrying something. 2.00 refunds issued.  Very few from this here site have ordered the new Elmer Bernstein release - it's now $15.98 rather than 17.98.  We're announcing by Monday, and if you are at all interested I would not wait too long.  You can pre-preorder via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net - be sure to say it's for the Bernstein release.  For those who missed the announcement here, it's two incredibly rare Elmer Bernstein scores, one from the play Laurette, which starred Judy Holliday back in 1960 - this score prefigures To Kill A Mockingbird in its colors and instrumentation - a real transitional score for Mr. Bernstein.  The second score is the soundtrack to a 1980s film called Prince Jack.

DR Ben - I believe R&H only sends out the original version of the show. At least that's what it looks like from their website listing (http://rnh.com/show_detail.asp?id=SM).

When SOUND OF MUSIC was done here last season, the director, who is a friend of mine, said that the show came with Max's songs, but it also had SOMETHING GOOD, instead of ORDINARY COUPLE.

You might consider one of these for your jogs - the cheap version holds only 20 seconds, but you can pay extra for ones with more time.

I got them as stocking stuffers for the Grandlads, and they do work!

I used to have an MP3 recorder.  It could record up to 8 hours before the rechargable battery died, and could hold up to 40 hours (I think)!  I got it on eBay.  It was about $150, but definitely worth it! ;) The one I have now actually records as .wav files, but the file sizes are comparable to MP3 files of the same length.  I have to convert these to PCM .wav files to be able to edit them or burn them to a CD, so it's more complicated than just having the MP3 recorder.

I wasn't aware Portland has a vegan mall.  Craig is also attempting to become a vegan, so far without much success.

Thanks, Jane.  As for the mall, it's really called a "mini-mall," basically four stores next to each other.  My niece found out about it through some newsletter that she gets.

Thanks for the refund, BK...but don't forget to mention the shipping!

Thanks derBrucer, that was my thought.  However I have a friend who serves chili sauce for hot dogs at picnics, and it more closely resembles very thick chili.

Hmmm... Coneys!

There used to be this little place on Hwy 17 in Jersey (I think around Mahwah) that served a terrific Texas sauce on their hot dogs.

I hadn't mentioned anything previously because I was never sure that this was going to happen.  When Sam Morgan's closed last December 4th, I assumed the finality of that part of my career.   It wasn't until I was approached - through the new owners through a co-worker at Borders - that I even thought about returning to waiting tables.  I've worked with and for the new owners of the restaurant before, and always was respected by and respected them, so naturally, I was honored and surprised to have them request me to be a part of their brand new endeavor.
Now the running joke is that my services come with the building, since I have been employed in that space since 1998. . . ;D

So...

From tomorrow's print edition of The New York Times:

Quote
For instance, Ms. Hopkins said, before committing to a show with a high price tag, the trustees want to know how many tickets are expected to sell and how much underwriting will be needed.

On Broadway the new season is just starting. Four shows — “[title of show],” “Xanadu,” “Hairspray” and “Legally Blonde” — have announced closing dates, and one scheduled musical, “Guys and Dolls,” has been canceled. But most of those decisions were made before Lehman Brothers failed, A.I.G. buckled, and talk of a $700 billion government bailout surfaced.

-I believe the writer meant "Godspell" instead of "Guys and Dolls", unless there's some more news that will be announced tomorrow.

On the subject of hairy chests, I noticed tonight that Michael Weatherley is letting his chest hair grow back. His shirt was open a bit during NCIS, and it was clearly there (I don't remember seeing a hairy chest at all two seasons ago during his intense season-long affair with the daughter (played by Scottie Thompson) of that French arms dealer.

I finished the three remaining episodes of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. What a surprise to find George Sanders as the primary guest star on the season finale in a scenario that resembled CASINO ROYALE more than a little.

Other guest stars in other episodes included Andrew Duggan, William Smith, Marion Ross, and Antoinette Bower.

Since DR td and I have been talking THE PIRATE, I took it down and watched it tonight (with the Fricke commentary turned on since I've watched the movie so many times.)

Sorry, DR td, I guess we will never agree about this. It's sharp and deeply saturated. However, bk would call it brown; I tend to think of it as dark. The color is saturated more than I remembered from the last time I saw it, but in the clips used in the documentary, the picture is a lot brighter and the color sparkles in the previews where in the feature, the color is deep but drab. As I called it yesterday, lackluster.

As I said, that Todd-AO OKLAHOMA! with its blurry soft focus and muddy color and dull picture is INFINITELY more what I would term a disaster.

I forgot about the topic of the day.  Anyway, growing up, other than peanut butter and jelly, I liked either cheese and mayo sandwiches or bologna and mustard sandwiches...on white bread, which is pretty much what we had.  Then one time my sister's then-boyfriend (then husband, now ex) made me lunch for college (my sister and I were carpooling to school) and he made me a cheese, bologna, may and mustard sandwich and it was good. :)

Yes, I know what you mean (although my ankle is doing well, it's not quite up to staircases yet).  I used to work in office buildings and take the stairs, but the problem was that often doors to various floors would be locked, and even to get an elevator  (like the first time I discovered this when I worked on the 16th floor and pooped  out at about the 12th Floor... and ended up having to walk up to the 18th Floor before I could find an unlocked door).

DR Kerry - There is many a good croque-madame to be found here in NYC. ;)

Now, do you prefer the "plain" variation where the grilled ham and cheese sandwich is topped with a fried (or poached) egg, or do you like the type where the sandwich is topped with mornay or béchamel sauce, put under the broiler, and then topped with the egg?

Definitely topped with the sauce and definitely NO eggs!
