Ah yes I think I forgot to comment on the newly svelte and UN-zaftig MR BK in the Patti Photos.  Most becoming, and inspiring to those of us who could lose a pound or twenty.

Great.  What with the TOD, I'll be spending the whole day thinking about Burbank.

I don't even know if anything I remember from that berg still exists.

Good morning, all! I have a lot of errands out and about today: a teacher sent me a reqiest for the published 1903 orchestra parts to "The March of the Toys" so I have to dig them out and copy them for him. After that I have a bit of work to do on LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40, and at 11:45 I heed to be at my first session of physical therapy. From there I go to 125th and Park Avenue to a recording session, which will occupy most of my afternoon. When I get home, I have to deal with dinner, and finish the HUCK FINN proof.

and that's enough.

Except for the TOD:

In the summer, Lesourdsville Lake, the local amusement park and Sunset Park's community swimming pool, the Park Street ice cream stand

The rest of the year. the Paramount Theatre, the public library

It took me quite a long time to get to sleep last night. I wasn't exactly restless, my brain would just not shut down. -I could also tell that my Mom was up late last night, checking out various things on the computer...

My Dad just took her to the hospital for her check-in and prep day.  I'll head over this afternoon once she's in her room. My brother, Mike, is still here with his kids, and they will stop by the hospital later on their way back up to Fairfax; and my brother, Don, will be driving back down from Fairfax today (he drove back up last night).

In the meantime, I think I really do need to get a little more sleep.

MAD MEN really is my favorite television show.  It is perfectly cast, well written, and I haven't found an anachronism yet - if anyone here has, let me know - although some things are bit vague time wise in my head.

And last night's final moments were most intriguing.

"Hello, it's Dick Whitman."

And last week's Betty:  "I keep dreaming about a suitcase."

And the last shot of this week's episode......

TOD:

I grew up in Camden, NJ.  My favorite places were:

Bonsell School--we lived right across the street from the school yard.  Lots of places to play and hang out.
Whitman Park--another fun place to run and play, but also the center for some neighborhood events such as block parties and concerts.
Korvette's--the BEST toy and record departments anywhere!
Baltake's Bakery--so-so baked goods, but always magically decorated for all the holidays throughout the year
Banasz 5 & 10--local store--fun little toy department
Stem's Variety Store--local pharmacy/ice cream/candy/newsstand store--you could buy just about anything there--it's where I mostly bought my comic books and Mad and Famous Monsters of Filmland magazines.
West Jersey Hospital grounds--fun to cut through and explore on our walk home from school--until they complained to our school principal about us.
Star Lite Drive-in--home of my initial movie going experience.  There were also a couple of movie theatres in downtown Camden whose names escape me at the mo'.

Another favorite place when I was young was my parents' bedroom window at the front of our rowhome, especially during winter when the tree across the street was bare of leaves and allowed an unobstructed view.  From that second story window, I could see both city halls of Camden and Philly, the twinkling lights of the Ben Franklin Bridge and the big red neon signs of the PSFS Building in Philly and the Sears store in Camden.  Even though I had often seen those sites close up many times, to my young mind,  being able to see them from my house was wonderful (and sometimes frightening) reminder of how big the world actually was beyond my little kingdom.  I often wish I had a photograph of that view.

TOD:

I was born in Phoenix, and I still live here and will probably die here.  I've traveled a lot but this was/is my home, and i think I'm stuck here.  I have wanted to move at various times but had siblings and a husband to watch over, and all my friends and family were here.

I have little family left, a few dear friends, but Phoenix is not the Phoenix in which I grew up, and it's far worse.  Perhaps that's true of all cities.

Luckily, I have all of you!

I am loving this season as well, very rich in character development. Peggy has been a fascinating character to see develop, and I wish we'd get more of Joan, too. Of course, the men are all fascinating. It's a shame these seasons only go for 13 episodes.

This new kind of television season confuses me.  I am so indoctrinated into the September-May new episodes, and then a summer of reruns from the 1960's, that a 13/26 episodes season with lots of reruns as early as December still freaks me out.

I grew up in a small mill town (less than 7,000 people). We did have three walk-in movie theaters, two drive-ins, and assorted record stores, bakeries, etc. which were my haunts. The bakery around the corner from my father's jewelry store
was really my favorite place. They had tea cookies (with that dollop of icing in the center) and cream horns that were TO DIE FOR. What wonderful memories of walking by that shop and smelling the scrumptuous odors coming from within.

The Seattle I grew up in doesn't exist any longer.

We lived on 23rd Avenue E.  I went to Garfield High School and the U of Washington.

Our neighborhood theater, where I went to watch the serials (e.g. SUPERMAN, LOST CITY OF THE JUNGLE) every Saturday, was the Roycroft.

Somebody on this board sent me an old photo of the Roycroft awhile back.  I still have it.

I also recall the Orpheum Theater, where I saw great movies (REAR WINDOW, etc.) road productions of Broadway Plays (MY FAIR LADY, THE MUSIC MAN, BYE, BYE, BIRDIE, etc.) and, one afternoon, got autographs from Rock Hudson, Julie Adams and Lori Nelson, who were in town promoting their new movie, BEND OF THE RIVER w/Jimmy Stewart.

Almost all the great downtown Seattle movie theaters, where I spent many hours as a kid, are gone.

The the block of store fronts where my parents had their jewelry store...two doors down from the Blue Mouse Theater...is now, I believe a huge office building.  Also gone is my favorite restaurant, Pancho's...which was owned by my uncle.

The last time I was in Seattle was 2004 for my 45th high school reunion.

Would you believe that I got lost?  The streets have been changed so much that it took me almost an hour to find my old home.

I could go on, but why get depressed?

Druxy, I grew up for several years in Seattle, too.  (Bellevue, actually--talk about changed!  When we lived there it was literally farm land and "downtown" Bellevue had two stores--a Nordstrom and a little drugstore called Marvel Morgan's.  Bellevue is now as big as Portland).  My dad was Commanding Officer at Ft. Lawton, which is now movie studio (or so I've been told), and in civilian life he managed the downtown Seattle Sears store on Roosevelt and 45th, right by the U, which is now a stripmall.

We won't even get into SLC.  ;)

Dan - I was a Korvettes fan, too.  Once we moved to Luna Park (the housing complex, not the amusement park) in the Coney island area when I was 10, the nearby E.J. Korvette's record department was a favorite place of mine.

The town I grew up in was Fort Thomas, Kentucky.  It was a little upper middle class town (from 15,000 to 20,000 at various times) about ten minutes across the river from downtown Cincinnati, Ohio.  So I had the best of both worlds.  Small town living with the big city right across the river.

Best part of small town, Fort Thomas, Kentucky:

1) You could walk from one end to the other in an hour.

2) The Hiland Theater for your local movie dose...no longer in existence, now a bank or an insurance company or something.

3) Schulkers Drug Store where I went for lunch often during High School and bought comics.

4) My home which had a view of downtown Cincinnati

5) Highlands High School was small enough, you knew everyone in your class.

Memories of Big Cincy across the River:

1) Main Street where there were three used bookstores within a block of each other which is where my book collection began.  Bertrand Smith's Acres of Books; Neville's Antiques; and Ohio Bookstore.  Both Acres and Ohio each had five floors of books.  Bert Smith, the original owner of Acres moved to Long Beach, Ca. and set up another Acres there, which I used to frequent in California.  Both Neville's and Acres are now gone.  But Ohio Bookstore is still there and still has five floors of books and is now run by two of the guys who worked there when I was going there over forty years ago.  I like the continuity.

2) Cincinnati had a bustling downtown: lots of big movie palaces and several department stores:  Shilllito's; Pogue's (not relation...at least none where I was going to inherit anything); McAlpin's.  All are gone now.

3) The Shubert Theatre is also gone where I saw OLIVER; HOSTILE WITNESS with Ray Milland; GINGERBREAD LADY with Nancy Kelly; HADRIAN THE SEVENTH with Hume Cronyn; ROSENCRANTZ & GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD; 1776; and MAN OF LA MANCHA.

4) Fountain Square remains, though nothing that was around it, particularly Bell Block News where I used to buy comics and paperback books.

5)Every Christmas at the GE building, they used to have  a fabulous electric train display.

6) We had a Coney Island on the River that was a great amusement park in its day.

7) Crosley Field where the Cincinnati Reds played, known in my day as the Cincinnati Redlegs.

Now that I've moved back, both Cincy and Fort Thomas are only an easy hour away and I get up there often.  I'll be going to my fortieth high school reunion this weekend, so I'll be spending a lot of time up there and will be doing a book run at Ohio Bookstore.  I also will be up in Mt. Adams which was one of my favourite spots in Cincy, next to Eden Park where they have a great Art Museum and the Cincinnati-Playhouse-In-The-Park where I spent many a happy hour in college, watching shows.  Mt. Adams was Cincinnati's bohemian part...lots of interesting eateries, clubs, and shops.

I totally agree with DR Jrand's comments last night. I was very upset to lose the team that went. And also the team that should have gone (who finished 2nd to last) are crazy bitches (or that is how they are being edited).
I really loved the geeks who left (they only left because of a penalty). They had so much potential (as opposed to the divorcees who seemingly make mistake after mistakd and cannot get anything right). I hate that the show is allowing so much bunching. And with so few tasks, it doesn't always allow the best to come in near the top. They need to have more challenges and to stop letting all the bad teams catch up!
I did however really enjoy the wrestling task. It wasn't simply an easy task anyone could do. And i like that. We need more challenging tasks to weed out the crappy racers.

Well... If anything, it will just drop to below $1000... meaning $999 (from $1099).  However, there's speculation of a higher processor speed, and some other new bells and whistles - including something that people are calling the "brick". ???

TOD - I think DR Charles Pogue's Cincinnati remains more intact than DR Druxy's Seattle or my Detroit.  The Motor City was a great place to be until the late 1960's.  Favorite places included the big J. L. Hudson department store (imploded  :'(), the Fisher (professional) and Hilberry (Wayne State Univ.) theatres, the Detroit Zoo, Detroit Institute of Arts, main public library, and taking the Bob-Lo boat to the island amusement park downriver.  Speaking of the Detroit River, I also loved going to the riverfront and watching the Great Lakes freighters.  Out in the 'burbs, there was the Franklin Cider Mill and El Nibble Nook, a great Mexican restaurant with a funny name.

DR JoseSPiano - how did you manage to eat in - and not get thrown out of - Shopsin's?    :)

It almost sounds from the article like the inspiration for Seinfeld's "Soup Nazi"...

Why would I have gotten thrown out? ;)

I read about Shopsin's a couple of times before I dined there.  As long as you followed HIS Rules - which were very clearly posted on the doors, the windows, each booth and the menus - you were guaranteed to be served.  Now, whether or not you got served what you ordered was - and, apparently, still is - a different matter.

*As for the "Soup Nazi" - I used to line up for the original "Soup Nazi" on W. 54th Street, and I can assure you that the "Soup Nazi" had nothing on Kenny Shopsin.  -Strangely enough, the original "Soup Nazi" storefront is still there, empty, vacant, with the awning fading away -- while another soup franchise set up shop a few doors down.

We won't even get into SLC.  ;)

When I was in college, I directed plays at Bellevue's Bellfry Playhouse.  We did a very "controversial" production of CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF.

Would you believe that we had to fight to let Big Daddy say "ass" on stage?

How times have changed.

-My Dad just called again from the hospital.  My Mom is all settled in her temporary room -- after her surgery she'll be moved to ICU for two days.  My Dad is most likely staying there all afternoon, and then will spend the night there tonight.  I think I'm going to head over in a few, especially since it looks like once my mom is moved to ICU, she won't that "accessible", and she also won't be able to talk for a while, so...

Thanks again for all the Prayers and Vibes. It really does mean so much more than you could ever imagine.

This is bringing back memories.

The Bellfry Playhouse was located in a reconverted church on a Bellevue side street.  It was started by this very elderly lady (Dorothy "something"), who had been a stage actress way back in the early years of the 20th century.

She had chosen a season of plays, LOVE RIDES THE RAILS, SMILIN' THROUGH and other relics, that modern audiences could care less about.

When I was asked to direct something, I gave her a long list of more "contemporary" plays, and the only one she would even consider was LAURA.

I'd never seen the play, but I did like the movie.  I figured that the play couldn't be too bad.

It was.

We did, however, wind up with a decent production and, as a result, I was able to talk the newly established Board of Directors into letting me do CAT...with certain cuts in Williams' script.

It was really a battle royal, but CAT did make enough money for the struggling theater to keep it going.  After that, they started doing more commercial plays and I moved on to start my own theatre group...taking most of the better Bellfry actors with me.

Our first production was Tennessee Williams' SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER.

I miss working in theater.  Hopefully, when we move to Austin, TX, next year, I can get involved again with it.

Weekend DVD viewing:

"August Rush" -- HDDVD -- beautiful-looking fantasy film with enough plot holes to accommodate several Titanics.  Yet, it holds my attention and moves me.  An unusual film with winning performers/performances "despite" the execrable Robin Williams (who could never make another film and "my world" would be all the better for it).

"The Happening" -- DVD -- Oooh.  The first true misfire from Shyamalan, IMO.  It's well-made but takes forever to get to a point and by then it's...like..."who cares"?  Attractive-as-hell-cast, superb photography, production design and underscore.  But the story was really dully written.  It may have looked good on paper, but the film isn't going to be in any of my M. Night Shyamalan retrospectives any time in the near future.

"Sleeping Beauty" -- DVD -- Amazing-looking.  Truly spectacular depth, clarity and color.  Upconverted on my Toshiba XA2, this film has considerable 3-D qualities.  I noted no disparity in image quality throughout my late-night viewing.

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" -- DVD -- It's always fun to see a an up-and-coming actor step up and hit a home run.   That's what I got from Shia LeBoeuf's performance as Henry Jones, Jr., aka Mutt.  He more than held his own with Harrison Ford and the delightful Karen Allen.  The bulk of the film, though, creaked and groaned most of the way through, borrowing this from the orignal film, that from the first sequel and the other from the "other" sequel.  Even John Williams' underscore was a "revisitation" of past themes from past films.  At times when I was occupied with something else (!!!), the film sounded like some of the others.  I understand a 5th Indiana Jones film is in the works.  Hopefully, "Mutt" will carry that film.

Yep, lots of big, meteor-crater sized holes in that plot - and don't get me started on the "time compresson" involved with getting a piece written, discovered, copied, rehearsed and programmed(!) in such a short amount of time.  However, a charming movie.  -Robin Williams didn't bother me that much.  And I loved how New York City was showcased too.

"The calculus... the calculus..."  -What about the plot.. the plot... the twist... the twist... the dialogue... the dialogue... ?? I was sooooo "glad" that I only paid $6.00 to see this one - and I still wanted my money back - as did everyone else in the theatre.  -People booed during the credits.  I was at least expecting some diatribe on prime numbers or the Fibanocci sequence.

*However, I am intrigued by the "intense scenes" added for the DVD release.  I didn't think anything was that "bad" in the theatrical release.  Yes, it was graphic, but it was so planned and staged.  -And I was laughing through the whole sequence in the zoo since it started off with a product placement for the Apple iPhone.  ;)

Back to the Topic of the Day...

From the first time we lived in Arlington, VA: going grocery shopping with my father at the Ft. Myer commissary.  Just seeing all that food all in one place, and since the commissary did look a lot different from the neighborhood Safeway.

From Port Angeles and Seattle: Riding the ferry back and forth, while drinking hot chocolate and eating Corn Nuts.  Our neighborhood was also nice.  Lots of kids, and it was a good block to run or ride my bicycle around.

From Connecticut: We lived at the bottom of a big hill, perfect for skateboarding, sledding, etc. There was also a great little park nearby, and in the woods there was this big rock that was perfect for sitting on and daydreaming.  I also loved the weekly trips to Caldor and Vality's(?).  I bought my first "real" origami book at Caldor, and still have it.  I also started taking piano lessons when we lived in Connecticut, so my living room - which was my practice room - was also a special place.  I loved watching the piano tuner whenever he would come over.  Soooo magical.

From the second time we lived in Arlington: Going over to my cousin Richard's house, and then going over to the Ben Franklin down the street from him and playing video games and buying way too many knick-knacks, cheap toys, water balloons, and candy then we knew what to do with.  I also loved walking and biking along the trail in Beaumont Park - which is still one of the nicest strolls around.

Hmm... So, the Noon News on the ABC affiliate here in Richmond ended... At 12:23.  ???  At first I thought that the cable box's clock was off, but... Then an in-house produced infomercial for a local window and siding company started, and it was hosted by one of the team of newscasters.  And that's what filled the rest of the Noon "news" slot.  Interesting.

I did take notes.  I thought I'd done everything we ended up doing, but maybe I missed a step.  The Apple guy, who is an Airport expert, said sometimes another wireless device that's in close proximity can mess up the signal momentarily and when that happens you have to unplug the modem and the Airport device and then plug them in modem first, then Airport, then restart and that usually fixes the problem.  I may have unplugged both but plugged the Airport back in first rather than the modem.  We also found out that I was two firmware upgrades away from the most current version, so we did that, too.  And all is well, except it's not the way I wanted to start the morning, and I had to talk continuously with almost no voice for forty minutes.

Well I am slightly obcessed with the Stephenie Meyer books. I've read Twilight, and New Moon. And am half way through Eclipse. And i should get Breaking Dawn from the library this week.

I really did not realize i would be interested in a story where one of the main characters is a vampire. But it's not really so much about that at all.

Interestingly, i found out that Twilight will be a movie next month (can't wait for that). And i also found out that the 5th book Midnight Sun (Twilight from Edward's point of view) got leaked and the author decided to publish the 200 page first draft on her website. So i am anxious to read that as well.

Dan - I was a Korvettes fan, too.  Once we moved to Luna Park (the housing complex, not the amusement park) in the Coney island area when I was 10, the nearby E.J. Korvette's record department was a favorite place of mine.

Korvette's was the first store I recall that announced that week's upcoming LP releases in the Sunday paper ads.  I can remember the big BIG full page ads for PACIFIC OVERTURES, CHICAGO and A CHORUS LINE--and this was in a Philly newspaper!

I'm also beginning to have not so good feelings about this Bacharach show - the producer seems very confused by everything - a press release was prepared over two weeks ago and I was told that some woman had to sign off on it - it still hasn't gone out.  And he's promising people "special guest" billing, which he cannot do because the minute you take a benefit out of alphabetical only, you're screwed.  Kevin's feeling the same way, and I really don't want people to keep working if this thing is going to fall apart.  So, Kevin and I are going to have a serious conversation about it.  We're less than seven weeks away and no one knows about the event.  Now, for the benefit last November, we really did do everything in the last four weeks, but it's a lot of work and I have to be comfortable that we're secure with the theater and everything else.  He hasn't bought my plane ticket and I have no idea where I'll be staying, either.

Greetings from Henrico Doctor's Hospital.

I did grab some lunch when I got, and wished I had stopped somewhere else along the way. I didn't realize that the cafeteria goes on "limited service" between lunch and dinners hours. So, the only hot food available was the "homemade chicken soup" - which was pretty heavy on the noodles by the time I got to the kettle.  They also had "sandwiches" but only if you bought the small container of egg or tuna salad from the case, and then two slices of bread from the "bread basket".  And, yes, there was Jell-O.  -At least it all only cost $4.35.

I know the producer had the contract for the theater - that I saw, so hopefully he's done what need be done.  Kevin talked to him and he said the press release had gone out and gave Kevin the addresses - which means that nobody ran it, which I find infuriating.  He's going to have to send it out again.  He's actually in LA as of later tonight, so I'm sure we'll meet and hash all this out.

On TV Tonight:

NBC - CHUCK, HEROES, MY OWN WORST ENEMY
CBS - comedies, CSI: MIAMI
ABC - DANCING WITH THE STARS, SAMANTHA WHO?, BOSTON LEGAL
FOX - baseball playoffs

And for us die-hards - TNT -  RAISING THE BAR

der Brucer

I read that since it stopped having the high rated THE CLOSER as its lead-in, the ratings for RAISING THE BAR have dropped precipitously.

This has been a really infuriating day - compounded by the way I'm feeling, which is yucky in the extreme.  I didn't want to have to talk today, but I have had one annoying phone call after another, plus having to make sure our print is going to press and that the pressing plant is ready to go as soon as they get the master, which should be tomorrow.

Well, my Mom's doctor just came and left.  He explained how things will work tomorrow, and also asked a few more questions and answer a couple too. Alas, I ended up finding out that my mom was first advised to have this procedure a little over ten years ago, but her current doctor did assure her (and me) that her interim actions were OK too. -She got second and third opinions back then.

I do have to say that it's a little unsettling knowing that the doctors will sort of have to play it by ear during tomorrow's procedures since they won't really know what they're dealing with until the procedure is under way. She will be prepped starting at 5:00am, and then she'll move to the ER at 7:00am. Due to the nature of the surgery, there's nothing that "we" can do during that time.  They will check in with my Dad at 1:00. So, I will probably just sleep in tomorrow morning and then head over around Noon.

In the meantime, I'm going to head back out around 6:00 and head over to Carytown for a stroll and some window-shopping. And maybe a $1.99 movie at The Byrd Theater.  Oh, and Bev's Ice Cream. :)

I have just been provided a link to a certain presidential candidate's web site where I can log-in and receive telephone contact data to enable me to do vote solicitation/polling from my home - at my own expense.

This should sure bump-up the number of political phone calls hitting the streets (no calls before 10AM or after 9PM).

I've had a fascinating day, with a physical therapist named Gurjeet to introduce to our DR MBarnum. I got to Toyland this morning, photocopied the "March of the toys" for this high school request, put together some work for Mr skip Kennon, and went off to physical therapy. I like my therapist Gurjeet versy much, and my shoulder went through rounds of heat therapy, ultrasound therapy, and then something involving ice and electroshock. Gurjeet thinks my problem is possibly a form of bursitis, and I'm seeing him now twice a week. I left therapy about 1 o'clock, took the No 11 bus up amsterdam Avenue to 125th and transferred to a busrunning to Park Avenue. I got to the recording session around 1:30, visited with the ever glorious Christianne Noll, and a singer who's doing the bass solo in "Nothing Like A Dame" in SOUTH PACIFIC. We dished about Paolo's replacement, Paolo's standby, and the workshops of the musical THE ADDAMS FAMILY.

My friend Josh's orchestrations were really nice, and I liked the writer very much, The songs are interesting. I rode home with my harpist friend Karen Lindquist, who's another of my favorite players, so I think it was all in all a very good day.

I just got off the phone with our DR Jose. Since I can't stop by the hospital to keep him companyduring this period, the least I can do is call him and offer a shoulder if he needs it. I beleve his mother's procedure will be successful and they'll have her walking in two days, but I also understand the fear and anxiety before the surgery. More vibes to our DR Jose from me:

Went to the mail place only to be reminded no mail today.  I just hate these ridiculous government holidays.  Make it a holiday for all or for none.  So that means that the Laurette master probably won't get to the pressing plant until Wednesday now.  Annoying.  As is the wind, which I'm quite sure is playing havoc with my allergies, exacerbating an already yucky situation.

Tickets went on sale to the general public yesterday so I decided to walk over today and now I have a ticket for Wise Guys/Gold/Bounce/Road Show (whatever you wanna call it) for Wednesday evening November 5th at 8pm. It's playing in the Newman Theatre. I know all the talk and all the re-writes and all the various opinions about it but I'm still excited to see it.

:)

I finished the book by Simon Baatz, "For the Thrill of It, Leopold, Loeb and the murder that Shocked Chicago".  It is, I think, the best researched and most readable book on the subject. (considering there's really only one or two non-fiction on the subject, that isn't hard - but this was good)  I've read other books, including Leopold's "Life plus 99 Years" and never learned as much about what really happened in court etc.  If you have any interest in the case at all, it's a very good read.   It does get into lots of detail about the psychiatrists' testimony and the back and forth between Clarence Darrow and Robert Crowe, the sort of thing I find quite interesting.

When my dad went in they discovered he needed 5 bypasses instead of the 2 or 3 they thought they would have to do.  But, it all turned out fine and that was....gees, DR Samantha's 10th birthday, I think, so it's been awhile and he's doing great.  There are just some things that can't tell from the outside even with all the modern technology.   Continuing prayers and vibes to your mom and family~~~~~~~~~~~~~

TOD - I grew up in Estherville, IA home of Swinging Bridges http://www.bridgemeister.com/pic.php?pid=1645 (http://www.bridgemeister.com/pic.php?pid=1645) They were cool, and were much more rickety when I was a kid.  There were always loose boards and it was always a dare to cross them while someone else shook them.

I loved going to the soda fountain at Rexall drug where Edna served the cherry Pepsi.  Lyon's Pastry had fabulous doughnuts. I'm sure they had more than that, but I remember the doughnuts the most.  We had The Grand Theater. It was a vaudville-type theater in its day, but its day was over long before I came a long.  We used to sneak up into the balcony (It wasn't usually open) it was a cool old theater and I loved it

That book was a real fav with my group.  If I weren't going to GA for a wedding this weekend, I'd get them together to see the movie.

It was a favorite with our group as well.  If I didn't think Keith would enjoy the movie I would suggest the same.

Maybe you didn't see it, but the story about the Bacharach concert was on Playbill about two weeks ago.

I had no idea they'd run anywhere but Playbill - so only talkin broadway didn't run it?  Have I got that right?  Because I will have stern words with Miss Miner about it if that's so.

I got some Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia frozen yogurt - very diet friendly and low fat grams and I think it will really hit the spot and cheer my weary bones right up.

Good Evening!

Greetings from Joe's Inn where I am finally going to have some dinner: a grilled chicken sub (with grilled onions - Yum!).

*Of course, since time was of the essence, I've already had dessert. ;D

I'm having dinner with Ann Miner and a few others on friday, by the way.  BK, do you want to just wait until then and I'll ask her if there's some reason for the delay in getting the story on ATC; it seems they do a nice occasional rundown of BC/EFA events every now and then, so maybe they're saving it for that.

I just had a weird thing happen.  My optical mouse quit working, so I swapped it for the mouse on Richard's iMac.  After a while, I switched back and mine is working fine now.

So... Once again, thanks for all the Vibes and Prayers for my Mom (and me too).

See you in the morning.

I had a completely fun evening of viewing. I began by watching last night's edition of DEXTER. Such a good season. Jimmy Smits and Michael Hall are a charismatic team to be sure. Can't wait to see how all this "friendship" develops.

Next, I watched MAD MEN from last night. I couldn't stand those "Jet Set" people, but seeing Dick Whitman emerge again was very interesting. And loved the openly gay Russian. Poor Peggy. And poor Sal!

I had about 40 minutes before I wanted to start watching CHUCK on the DVR, so I put in the SWEENEY TODD DVD and watched it from the beginning. Got to the murder of Perrilli before turning it off. Always enjoyable.

I see Paramount is issuing the Blu-ray this month, but it'll likely be on my CHristmas list since I already have the very nice looking 2-disc DVD set.

CHUCK was an enjoyable show. I have liked every episode that Bryce has ever been connected with, but I have to say the on again/off again stuff with Chuck and his girl are getting tiresome now. And the subplot with the jocks vs. the nerds ended exactly as I expected it to.

So, the spy stuff was all good, but the rest of it tried my patience a little bit.

Once again, HEROES is continuing to become clearer and clearer as to the story it's telling this first half of the season. Really enjoying the show now even though its ratings are the lowest in its history.

A little bit of Carole Lombard goes a long way with me, and an entire evening of her movies is just too much.  She was a talented comedienne and completely unique - but sometimes her material let her down....and when that happened....whew!

Neal Hefti of course did the BATMAN television theme - and wrote a nice score for the Carroll Baker version of HARLOW......some of the cues are a bit clunky .... since the movie wrapped in mid May and was thrown into theatres by June 15......

~~~Super Vibes for DR Jose's Mother!!~~~
Well, today we had our library's All Staff Training Day, where all the branches are closed and everyone gets together for learning sessions and speeches and a paid lunch.  It was pretty fun.  Also, I got my 20 years of service award(s). :) Everyone who reaches a five-year-increment gets a certificate and a hand-made wooden box.  Here a picture of the top of the box that I got:
Last night, I went to bed earlier than I usually do, and my cat crawled up on me, as she sometimes does, but she kept moving to different places...on my hip (I first sleep on my side), then behind my knees, then behind my back, then back on my hip...all freakin' night! :P Then, at around 2:30 a.m., or so, I heard some scratching noises outside the wall that is next to the neighbor's (slightly lower than mine) roof. :o It almost sounded like it was in the wall, but it moved away.
Title: Re: THE LUMPEN PROLETARIAT
Post by: George on October 13, 2008, 11:52:06 PM
All I could think of was that I should not be awake to hear that.  I'm supposed to be asleep and completely oblivious to things on my roof at 2:30 in the morning!  It didn't last very long, and I eventually got to sleep, but I didn't get much sleep at all.  I hate it when that happens.  I spoke with the condo property manager and she has gotten reports that raccoons have been in the area, so I'm going to assume that that's what's been on my roof.
