Well, you've read the notes, the notes were retro and got a good grade, and now it is time for you to post until the retrograde cows come home.

And Congrats, BK, on the sold-out-ness of the Bernstein CD!

Good morning, all! My colleague at the PHI office cancelled on me this morning, so I will putter about here for the next couple of hours - I have some Volume 2 writing on BABES - and walk down to visit my nutritionist around 11:15. Depending on whether my bank transfer occurs, I'll either run to the NYPL or to the pharmacy for some med refills.

Wednesday morning greetings!  I've been in the office for just an hour and am leaving now for a luncheon event.  When that's over, so is my workday, so I'll be back to visit with y'all later this afternoon.

Good morning!

A night of very upsetting dreams didn't bring about restful sleep. Perhaps tonight will be better. It's another cool morning leading to a very warm afternoon. Overall, looks like a gorgeous day.

After I cleaned the den this morning, I sat down and finished the rest of the bonus features on SLEEPING BEAUTY. The game where Maleficent's orb asks a series of questions and can guess what you're thinking is lots of fun. It certainly guessed what I was thinking the first time I tried. If I had had more time, I would have tried again.

On TV Tonight!

Due to the debate, only an hour of prime time is given over to entertainment programming.

CBS - comedies
ABC - PUSHING DAISIES
NBC - KNIGHT RIDER
FOX - baseball
BRAVO - PROJECT RUNWAY

I'm up, I'm up... And I'm guessing that Mercury might have sneaked back in to retrograde this morning since I could only read the first part of the Notes too.  ???

Today I'll watch the NCIS episode from yesterday as I cook and eat lunch. I also have last night's THE MENTALIST and THE SHIELD to watch at some point today (probably tonight). I may record PUSHING DAISIES and watch it tonight. I quit the show in the middle of its shortened season last year, but I may revisit it tonight if I get my work done.

My Mom was already up and talking at the hospital this morning... :)

I was going to go over this morning, but her nurse suggested that only one of us head over this morning so that my Mom doesn't have too many things or people to concentrate on.  I'm a little bummed, but they also said that it looks like they will be moving her to her regular recovery room tonight(!), so I'll see her then.  :)

*However, I woke up today "feeling my sinuses", so, I was already feeling a little apprehensive about heading to the hospital as soon as I got out of bed.  In the meantime, I'm having a very leisurely breakfast - oatmeal, yogurt, green tea - and I'm taking care of a couple of emails and phone calls.  -And I'm surfing the net as well.  ;)

I don't know what the hell is going on. I just tried to post a respnse to Jose's report on his mother and I was told my session had timed out, the second time I tried, a green "loading in" sign appeared and stayed on for what seemed a long time, and the third time I was told there were too many connections. My Dad just got back from the hospital, and he did see and talk to my mother.  She's very, very tired - and understandably so.  Hopefully, I'll be able to see here later tonight.

Yes, DR George, my congratulations on your 20,000-plus posts, as well!

This time next year, we'll be looking at "singdaw" from a different perspective, I suspect.

Thanks...and yes, Singdaw is quite prepared to overtake my status as the sixth highest poster.  His number of posts per day rate is three times that of mine.  It's even higher than BK's! :o

Good morning all.  We are doing pretty well.  Toby is asleep in my lap, having finished his morning nursing session.  Actually he fell asleep part way through it, so he shall probably be awake and wanting more soon.  I've mastered the nursing-and-surfing technique already, so I always have the computer nearby.  Last night he got the most intense bout of hiccups at about 4 am.  He kept looking at me with an expression that seemed to be saying "what on earth is happening, mom?  can't you make it stop?"  Sadly, I could not.

Laura, I responded to your message.  Thanks, I hadn't see it pop up as new until you pointed it out.

Dakota Celt - you should speak to the ITS people - there is nothing "offensive" on this site, and we don't like the implication that there is - you can pass that along to them if you like.

I have been having an ongoing battle with the local ITS on campus. STudents are reporting problems accessing the American Cancer site and several others. Apparently they are finding the search terms "breast"  offensive...

There is nothing on this site that is offensive...

Curiously, the last two posts I made did not appear to go through during the tsuris around 11 am EST. I had a great walk to my nutritionist, lost around 4 lbs, and I don't need to see her again until Dec. 15.

After that, I stopped by City Center and visited by adopted son Josh clayton in the Encores! office for about 45 minutes. Then, a bus ride home and voila!

I have nothing else to report. I see DR Dakotacelt has found her way back to us and DR singdaw is threatening a porn shoot. Scary!

Now, if only that damned property would close this week, I would be content.

I wanted to be the judge when the boys were young. I didn't know how to screen there viewing, heck I barely knew how to turn the computer on & off, and Keith was traveling most the time.  I just waked in and out of the room as much as possible while the computer was on, at least when I was awake.  I began doing that after noticing the screen changed very quickly as I walked in.  I never asked why.

Well, the site does promote the movie TFNM - a movie that no small number of people would consider "porn".

This site is also gay-freindly - so "Good Parents" need to protect thier impressionable off-spring from the homosexual agenda.

This site had also been known to post unkind remarks about public officials and so is clearly of suspicious intent.

This site also promotes the Lambada - the forbidden dance!

This site also allows posts that remark kindly on the works of ALW - clearly subversive!

And to think...BK asked  me to pull a pic of an anatomically correct stuffed toy to keep us "family friendly".

The luncheon event that I helped with today went perfectly - good food, good speaker, and excellent weather for us to eat outdoors under the canopy.  I left there about 1:30, met Richard at the place he'd taken my car for routine maintenance, traded cars with him, and went shopping for the rest of what I needed for the wedding present I'm taking to GA this weekend.  I got home just in time to  greet UPS delivering the new outfit that Richard bought me to wear to his graduation later this month.  It will also do nicely as my retirement party outfit.

My mom seemed to be under the same philosophy.  When I was seven years old, we visited a dear friend of hers whose partner had AIDS.  He was in the final stages, I remember, and they were taking care of him at home because it was where he wanted to be.  I asked my mom what he had and how he got it, and she told me in simple but detailed terms.  A lot of information for a young kid, maybe, but I understood it and it left a strong lesson in my mind.  AIDS was never an abstract thing for me again.  I think kids are capable of handling a lot more than we give them credit for sometimes.

Don't get me started on the breastfeeding issue, though.  Since having Toby I've had to breastfeed him in public, usually in my car, once or twice.  I've been lucky so far, but I'm waiting for the day someone gets offended and accuses me of public indecency.

I would say a young age, as long as it was research to scare them into avoiding STD's. ;D

That is very young!

My father occasionally talked about his patient who was dying from Syphilis.  That had a big impact on me.

Do you mean abstract things like a playmate having two mommies -- and that's okay? -- or having two daddies -- and that's also okay?

I'm sick of the hypocrisy and lies we're getting on the pro-Prop. 8 ads here in California.  Did you know that "they" are saying that making it legal for gay men and women to marry same-sex partners means that schools will be teaching that it is OKAY for boys to marry boys?  For girls to marry girls?  RUN FOR THE HILLS.  I don't know why schools would be "teaching" that unless they also teach that the norm is for boys to marry girls but that some boys like only boys and some girls like only girls.

I know one thing:  Being raised by heterosexuals in a heterosexual environment that vocally denounces homosexuality NEVER DETERRED ANYONE FROM BEING HOMOSEXUAL.

So I don't know how the reverse would or could be true.

Another lie being told is that churches would be liable for lawsuits for hate crimes (!!!) and would start being taxed for not accepting gay marriages.  Well, GEE....they aren't taxed if they refuse to marry divorcees.  Catholics aren't taxed for excommunicating folks.  Mormons and Quakers and Amish aren't taxed for shunning.  Why would a church's beliefs about gay marriage be the backbreaker????

STUPID LIES.

The legality of marriage and this proposition have no impact whatever on churches.  Churches don't have to marry anyone they don't wish to marry or approve of.  It's all propaganda intended to mislead and misrepresent what is really nothing more than "equal" rights for all in regards to legal unions.  Since one can legally marry in a government office, sans religious officiation, the entire argument is moot.

Unfortunately, a bunch of over-zealous activists ouside the US (Canada, UK, Sweden) have managed to get pastors charged with Hate Crimes based on sermon content. These cases are still winding their way throught the courts:

ASSOCIATED PRESS (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,147084,00.html)

Quote
SWEDISH PASTOR ACQUITTED AFTER ANTI-GAY SERMON
Friday , February 11, 2005

STOCKHOLM, Sweden —
A Swedish pastor convicted of hate crimes for a sermon denouncing homosexuals as a "cancer" was acquitted Friday by an appeals court that said he was protected by the country's free speech laws.

The Goeta Appeals Court said that while Aake Green's (search) views of gays can be "strongly questioned," it was not illegal to offer a personal interpretation of the Bible and urge others to follow it.

"The purpose of making agitation against gays punishable is not to prevent arguments or discussions about homosexuality, not in churches or in other parts of society," the court said.

Green, 63, was the first clergyman convicted under Sweden's tough hate crimes (search) laws, which make it a crime to make inflammatory remarks against racial, religious or national groups. The laws were ratified in 2003 to include homosexuals.

IF 80 calories is doable for a treat, you can buy those pre-made Jell-o Puddings and a can of Cool Whip (there IS a low-cal version) and combining a dollop of Cool Whip on the pudding is about 80 calories.

If you buy Jell-O, a one-cup serving with Cool Whip is about 40 calories...so you can have TWO, count 'em 2!

I remember a show (I forget which) that a co-worker of mine used to tape every episode (on videotape), and when the DVD seasons came out, one particular episode was missing!  It wasn't in the set, but she had it on videotape.  It turns out that a song by Sting was used throughout the episode, and (if I remember correctly) is even referenced in the script, so it was a major plot point.  HOWEVER, when the DVDs were being prepared for release, they couldn't get the DVD rights to the song.  They, of course, wanted to release the season, so they just left off that one episode.

DH Jed was quite annoyed when he bought the DVD set of Quantum Leap, only to discover that they didn't want to shell out the $$ for a lot of the song rights, so unless one of the characters like Scott Bakula was actually singing the song, or it was referenced in the script, it was replaced with elevator music.  Lame.

Lame.

How annoying!  Do they sell the music separately?  I believe DS Craig has the complete set of music to THE WONDER YEARS.

This is our local library.  It is an original Carnegie library, with a fairly new addition on the left.  You can't really see the addition in this photo, just the lights to it.

Normally for a series, if they're using the same music multiple episodes they'll do one licensing and mechanical deal to cover the season - or so I should think.  There might be extra required for DVD release, but it would be minimal.

The pool man did arrive and was shocked the water was still green - he said he'd do whatever was necessary - he was going to completely clean out the entire filtering and pump system and then use chemicals and whatnot to get it looking the way it should.  I left to do banking and other errands (including getting Miss Susan Egan a music chart she needs), and now I am back.  I stopped at Gelson's to get some more water, and I was going to get something to eat, but I'm so tired of having stuff from there, that I passed and will get something a little later from somewhere more interesting.  I did buy a little thing of small coconut macaroons because I was taken aback and also afront at how calorie-friendly they are, and fat gram friendly, too.  Each macaroon is eighty calories and two grams of fat.  I'll have two for dessert later and that will be plenty and take care of my sweet tooth.

I love those pudding cups and cool whip - they're great.  I can do 200 calories for a treat, as long as the fat gram count is reasonable and as long as my meal or meals o' the day aren't over 1100 calories or so - I can maintain and/or lose eating up to 1500/1700 calories a day, as long as I do the long jog, which I do daily.

I got in the car and went looking for food - nothing I passed interested me in the least.  Not even Taco Bell.  I may just make some eggs and toast instead, and then have something a little later, plus I could then eat three or even four macaroons if I felt like it.  Of course, I don't feel like eggs and toast either.  And therein lies the conundrum.  I would probably eat a Philly Cheesesteak but that is not calorie friendly in the least, although it is under 1000 calories.

ASSOCIATED PRESS (http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/10/14/ohio-elections/)

Quote
JUDGE RULES AGAINST OHIO ELECTIONS OFFICIAL IN BATTLE OVER VOTER REGISTRATION

CINCINNATI -- A federal appeals court has ordered Ohio's top elections official to set up a system by Friday to verify new voters' eligibility.

The full 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati has upheld an earlier ruling that Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner has to use other government records to check the thousands of new voters for registration fraud. A three-judge panel of the 6th Circuit had disagreed last week, but the full court's ruling trumps the panel's decision.

Brunner previously said there was no way to set up the system with such speed.

And she is so right - validating one data base (Voter Registration) against another (DMV, SSN, etc) is almost black art: Surnames keyed different McCain vs Mc Cain, Ohara vs O'Hara, Smith-Jones, vs Jones; Fathers and sons not always using Sr. and Jr.; newly wed women with surname changes in one data base but not the other; Last Name Smith, First Name- Mary, Middle Initial A. vs Last Name Smith, First Name Mary Ann. Not to mention that in large data bases there are many instances of multiple legitimate occurances of seemingly unique names. And possible variations on legitimate address abound! Heck we live on Shady Ridge Drive and the next development over has a Shady Ridge. In spite of many hours of programming, I was never able to come up with a cross match system that did not take human intervention to resolve potential ambiguities. Is the "H. Ross Perot in Unit #1 the same as Henry R. Perot in Apt #1?

Yup.  The same thing happened with the original Broadway soundtrack (yes...soundtrack) to the "musical" Contact.  They couldn't get the rights to the song, "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You," so they had Boyd Gaines (the star of the show) sing it for the recording...so this wasn't a bad thing. ;)

There's much to "see" as well as read:

Quote
One of the oldest public libraries in the nation, the Free Library’s central building contains over one million volumes. It ranks as one of the most comprehensive collections in the country, with particularly extensive holdings of early printed books, incunabula (1,100) and medieval manuscripts.

The primary manuscript holdings are grouped in John Frederick Lewis Collection, consisting of more than 200 codices and 2,000 detached leaves spanning the 9th to 18th centuries. Virtually all types of medieval book are represented—Bibles, Psalters, antiphonaries, missals, patristic and philosophical texts, devotional works, and over fifty Books of Hours. Some of the most famous illuminated works include the Lewis Bible, related to the Paris Bibles moralisées (c.1225); calendar pages from the Hours of Henry VII, painted by Jean Bourdichon (c.1500); a Book of Hours decorated by Jean Colombe (c.1475); and a genealogical roll of Edward IV illustrated in England (c.1480). Another 200 works form the core of the Lewis oriental collection, comprising one of the country’s premier collections of Mughal illuminated manuscripts.

As opposed to all the rest of the year, you mean?

If I'm to believe my on-line TV Guide, the local Fox Network stations will pre-empt the Debates with baseball (the NLCS game). (Since we are in the Philly viewing area, that might stop mob-riots).

Thank goodness, it would be a shame if Craig missed watching his Phillies win the playoffs tonight.

Dream on!

I'm going to help Keith pull the petunia's out of the boxes on our deck.  I always find this sad.  He used to plant pansies for the winter, no more :(

I like the idea of cucumber in vinegar with pepper - do you add a tiny bit of oil or just the vinegar?  Any other seasonings?  And just normal Heinz vinegar?

Just plain vinegar. But not too much and it was quite tasty tonight. My grandmother used to do this for summer salads with sliced tomatoes and thinly sliced raw onion.

Every summer, every supper, a bowl of sliced cukes in vinegar sat on the table,  alongside the peeled and sliced tomatoes.

I wonder what the late fees are these days.  They have this annoying rule you can't renew a book if there is a hold on it.

We have that rule, also, but at least we don't charge late fines...if something is lost, then there's a fine, but not for being late.

I couldn't find any reference to late fees on line.  I will try & remember to ask when I get my new card.

hehe - I was wondering about that too.  Thankfully(?), even though my mom's political affiliations are "in place", she's never really gotten that worked up about it either way.  And if she does hear anything that she doesn't agree with, she'll just give them a big sigh like she usually does. ;)

The fun movie I plucked from the shelf was YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, Connery's fifth James Bond film. I think it's the most underrated of his Bonds flicks, and I find it much more entertaining than THUNDERBALL or DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER. (It's shorter, too; less than two hours). I watched the Ultimate Edition remaster which looks and sounds far better than any previous release. Still has some sharpness issues, but it's still cleaner and more watchable than ever before.

The first six Bond Blu-rays (not counting CASINO ROYALE which came out a year ago) come out next week, so I'll be trying to work my way through them whenever I have a spare moment later next week.

Our library isn't convenient for me, and parking can be difficult.  I went a number of times when we first moved here, when dogs were still permitted.  After Echo was no long welcome I stopped going.  I've decided I should use the library & was curious if I could go on line to hold books.  Seems I should be able to once I log in.  I can't log in without a password & I can't find a place to give it one.  The phone number for the library has bee busy for a long time.

Our library lets you download audio books free.  I haven't done it yet, but it's great, if you like that sort of thing

My dad had to go to the hospital today. He has/had an obstruction in his bowel of some sort and after going through procedures similar to those Callie went through, he is now home and has to drink two bottles of the stuff you drink before a colonoscopy.  He said it isn't doing any good yet...they think it's the powder stuff they gave him after he got his gall bladder out that's just been working too well.  He and mom seem pretty optimistic about it, but I am concerned.  Vibes would be appreciated.

I have been catching up on SUPERNATURAL SEASON THREE, and today, before work, I caught the episode, "A Very Supernatural Christmas."  A truly unique episode and now one of my favorites.

The entire season three was really fantastic on this show. The Blu-rays are coming out next month for Season Three, but the cost is well above what I'd spend ($55). I'll wait for a sale one day. I have the first two seasons on regular DVD, both bouoght on sale for less than $15 each.

You ain't just whistling "Dixie!"  This season is super!  I simply can't wait for my evenings after work and my afternoons between shifts to catch up with those Winchester boys!  The distaff additions to the cast have proven to be verrry interrresting. . .

Inspired by earlier postings, I was a little hungry, but I wanted 0 calories and fat grams - so I went to Gelson's and bought a tomato and a cucumber, got home, cut them up, doused with vinegar (which I believe has 0 of everything), added a little salt and pepper and ate it all up and boy was it great and it hit the spot just perfectly AND it's actually filling - I don't think there's any real calories in a tomato and a cucumber.

Thanks TD and Laura...

now I'm going to sleep...I'm still feeling inspired by Ken Burns.  Sort of makes me want to go back to school and become a history teacher

Tomorrow I hope to get a lot of work done.

I spent today going back and forth between the Lexis rep who is doing a real hard sell on online research and I don't like it, and the Westlaw rep who is doing a soft sell but may be getting farther with me. The Westlaw database is better for what i'm doing now, but I don't think i'll be saving money which was the goal, lol.

I told them both I wasn't going to buy anything today I have to sit down and compare.  I don't think my contract with lexis is up until December 31, but I've gotten Westlaw to agree to giving me 2 months free.  They are both trying like crazy to make a sale before the end of the month.  Times must be tough in the online legal research biz

Dakota - we've asked to keep the political stuff to a minimum - you weren't around for the brouhaha, so all I ask is to hold off until after the election.
Laura gave me a heads up and i removed them :)

Excellent review for Scent Of Mystery from Film Score Monthly:

Scent of Mystery (1960) *** 1/2

MARIO NASCIMBENE/JORDAN RAMIN
Kritzerland KR 20011-7
14 tracks - 35:39

Bruce Kimmel’s label has released this much sought-after ’60s oddity featuring music mostly by Mario Nascimbene, with additional material by Jordan Ramin. The album also boasts two songs with lyrics by Harold Adamson, sung by Eddie Fisher. Scent of Mystery was unique for its time, as it was the first film to be shown (at least in New York) in glorious Smell-o-vision. On that note, the CD booklet even allows you to have an aromatic experience while reading the notes.

Nascimbene scores the strange little comic mystery with a heavy helping of jazz, including a prominent Gershwin-esque clarinet solo early on. Meanwhile, carefully detailed orchestral writing emphasizes the film’s comedy aspects; there is even a bit of Ravelian scoring for piccolo, flute and bassoon in a medley that accompanies a street stroll. It’s all deliciously wonderful, capturing the joie de vivre of the film’s light-hearted approach with colorful orchestrations that also hint at the locale. A few well-placed car horns (especially for “The Chase”) make for humorous additional color.

Scent of Mystery was the single release from Ramrod Records and originally featured a mono pressing (a few made it out in stereo). For this CD release, Kritzerland presents the score in perfect stereo. This unexpected pleasure is easily recommended for fans of jazz scores of the ’60s, and is worth tracking down in this limited (1,000) edition available from the label’s website: www.kritzerland.com. You can go there to hear some clips as well, just in case you need more encouragement. —Steven A. Kennedy
