I have nothing to watch this weekend.

 :'(

I'm in Austin, TX, and the hotel room doesn't have a DVD player.

It also has the worst internet signal in the world.  Every 5 minutes I get knocked off the net.

So, maybe I'll go to a movie.

Here's one for the books.

The hotel (Comfort Suites) is on Time Warner Cable.

Time Warner is having some sort of dispute with NBC, thus it is not carrying the NBC network...at all.

No LAW & ORDER.  No TONIGHT SHOW.  Nothing.

I'm told that this is the situation for the entire state of Texas.

Unbelievable!

Good morning, all! The payment transfer landed in my bank this morning. The bad news is because of the hold up I lost nearly $100 on overdrawn fees, which really pisses me off. Once the rent check is turned over today, the account is back down to nothing, which has me hopong that the singer who asked for a new copy of my invoice on Sept 27 will send me a few bucks. The irony is, from the way he was talking on Sept 27, I thought he was going to pay off the balance.

I'm also hoping that the property closing happens ASAP. but this Ohio property is becoming a real albatross, and I wish my dad had sold it before his death.

Today, the landlord's office, then the pharmacy, and then the NYPL at Lincoln Center. After that, THE MOST HAPPY FELLA.

TOD:
DVD:  too many things, in particular Season 1 of LIFE
CD: Guy Haines, Babes In Toyland, several Jerome Kern scores, La belle au bois dormant ballet
     VCR: artistic anthropological studies

I had meant to comment on LIFE ON MARS, which is such an essentially unhappy premise that I fnd it hard to watch although I love the cast - I've known Michael Imperioli for 20 years or more since he was a student at Stella Adler's - but this violence between Keitel and O'Mara is too bizarre. I like the trippy neighbor, but I think she's essentially there to establish the openness of the early 1970s and the frankness of casual sex and drugs. I had a college friend who drove a taxi in 1972, and he was always bringing home passengers for threesomes with him and his girlfriend. I must say, though, that the city in the tv show looks nothing like I remember New York to look on my frequent trips during the 1970s.

This may sound familiar to some of you, as the same struggle is going on all over the country, where other stations owned by KXAN's parent company, LIN TV, will also be dropped from TWC on October 2nd if a deal isn't reached.

I got an interesting email yesterday from some guy in West Seattle who is the "event coordinator" for an upcoming Frances Farmer day, which will include her getting a "star" at Alaska Square and also a retrospective of some of her films.  Unfortunately, they're also showing "Frances," which is about as "biographical" as "Harlow," and then are eating at the Shadowland Cafe, which, if you know the history of lies about Frances, does not augur well for the festival's verisimilitude-o-meter.  They want me to come up and speak, but I'm booked for one of the days and not sure if I can drive up there, do my thing, and then turn around and come back--we shall see.

And they're putting in the new electricity lines for the new houses next door, so I will be without power for most of the day.  Oy.

Larry and Jose and Ben and FJL and other NYC HHWers, this may (or may not ) be of interest to you guys...but there are surely some wonderful movies being shown (Including a brand new comedy starring John Abraham and a movie about a guy who, after finding out he has AIDS, decides to start going to the gym for his health, only to eventually win a bodybuilding contest)

DR Elmore, I brought all those CDS you sent to me to work...our mail guy has borrowed the Ethel Waters CD and my co-worker Bud has been enjoying the Jermoe Kern and Rodgers and Hart CDs.

The rest of my office looked at the CDs and then walked away.

Funeral March from Piano Sonata

Key? Composer?

It doesn't say ...

Most like the Piano Sonata, No. 2, in B-Flat Minor (otherwise known as the "Funeral March" Sonata) by Frederic Chopin.

-Do they at least mention who the pianist is?  Or is it an orchestral transcription?

Speaking of spirits, this new HHW site has some that like messin' with ya -- I took a break from my frenzy and when I returned I was logged off -- and I didn't log off -- SO I had to relog in -- and then when I did that last response to DR RP, it did something strange, and when I tried to correct it, it appeared as it is -- looking even stranger. (Twilight Zone music)

Attack of the creepy-looking icons. Har-rump! I'm gonna take my squished avatar and leave!

...I'm off to the theatre to work on Ghost Talk.

T.O.D.:
dvds;
SUPERNATURAL SEASON 3 - what a great, truly great season!  And it's nice to have the upgraded 5.1 sound, too.
INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL  - I like it, I don't LOVE it, but, it's just so much fun.  Still, there's too much CGI-work.
Some hand made things I cannot name, but, Cheyenne Jackson has hit another home run and Jennifer Holliday was NOT going while Judy Kaye was not in love and David Hyde-Pierce took to the stage with Debra Monk.

CD:
SAAWARYIA - original soundtrack
Kristen Chenoweth - A Lovely Way to Spend Christmas
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF - BBC Broadcast starring Anthony Newley
AVENUE Q SWINGS - various artists

Reading Material:
WAITER RANT - the waiter
AMERICAN LIGHTING
BLOODLINES - the latest "Repairman Jack" novel

DR JMK, are you doing anything tonight?  Shalom Auslander will be speaking at Powell's tonight-7:30.  Wish I could go.  I just finished reading his memoir "Foreskin's Lament", a strange, funny, sad, interesting memoir.  Check it out.

I'm listening to the Portland band Smegma instead.  (A very, very, very inside joke that absolutely no one will understand I'm quite sure).

Ewwww.... "inside" was it's own inside joke too, I guess.  ::)

*In better news, I also found out that my parents had not bought any of the plane tickets for our now-postponed family trip to the Philippines. From the wording of my Dad's "confirmation email", I thought everything had already been bought and paid for.

Here, too. The cats didn't like going to the vet in the rain, even though I covered them with towels as I carried them in.

We thought my big love cat might need surgery for the tear duct that has been blocked for over a month, and hasn't responded to antibiotics, but today the vet drained it with a needle and was very relieved that it did the trick. My kitty never stopped purring the whole time and afterwards rolled around on the table and nuzzled everyone. Elmo, the shy cat, stayed in the cradle of the scale with a blanket over him, hoping no one would notice that he was there. Everyone found them very entertaining.

I chatted with the vet tech, and he was the one who told me about Neal Hefti! (I'm way behind in the HHW world...)

What the fat hell? Since 2:45 when I got back from errands, I've had 5 unsolicited phone calls. I thought there was now a lwa against this crap.

The laws only apply to regular solicitation - political campaigning is exempt!

Have you updated your Do Not Call registry?

None of the calls were political although I'd love to get one of the McCain calls causing a ruckus yesterday.

First off: *giggle* kazoo is a funny word. Say it enough times it gets addictting.
Second off: I miss you guys. I really do. And school is boring. (what else is new.)
Thrid-ly(no one can argue that this is not a word 'cause it was used, and therefore, a word): Bruce, the book goes well, but you can blame my school for not giving me enough time to finish it. In fact, call them and yell at them, they really need it.

T-T I can't believe they disbanded our Anime club...
Anyways, good vibes to all and to all a Ham sandwich. Nighty!!!!!!!!! ;)

We are very frustrated.

While in L.A. we got a parking ticket.  Since the information sign for the meter  was hidden behind a tree, and the next sign down had different hours, we tried to talk the guy out of the ticket.  Not only did he refuse, he seems to have given us a second ticket for another parking meter.  The city doesn't care that these tickets are in different 100 blocks & one minute apart.  They say we have to pay the ticket & then request a hearing to get our money back.

I asked the guy on the phone if he really believes it is physically possible to get two parking tickets within one minute of each other in different locations.  He said "I can't comment on that".  Why should we trust the city to return the $45 if we pay it.  The first review of the facts resulted in a letter stating insufficient evidence to dismiss our citation. ???

DR Cilla, good luck with Weight Watchers.

Thanks Jane.  I think I will. My real goal is to be in shape before I turn 50 which is 2 1/2 years from now.  While I've tried to lose weight for others before or so I'd look better before this event or that event, I haven't just done it for me.  I'm planning to go back to Curves again. There is a new one in my neighborhood and although I like walking and will continue that, I really miss the strength training.  So, I think I'm going to join.

Last night, Jane posted a link to a story of Millvina Dean, the last survivor of the Titanic sinking.  This story was in regards to her selling off some items in the hope of staying in the nursing home where she has been living.  Like Jrand, I hope that someone will come forward and pay a great deal more for the items so that she may remain where she is living for whatever time she has left.

Inclued with the story was this picture of Millvina Dean.

In the background is the ship Royal Majesty on which, according to the caption, Ms. Dean sailed out to the wreck site in August 1996.  Since I was on that ship, I was confused because, although Ms Dean was at the dock when we arrived back in Boston, I did not remember her sailing out to the Titanic site with us on the Royal Majesty.

I did some research today, and, although she was at the dock in Boston, as I remembered, she was the only one of the then four suvivors who decided not to go to the site.  She was at the dock for our arrival and the expected reception honoring the arrival of the "great piece" of the ship which broke free and sank back to the bottom of the ocean, the day before.

Is a 1 hour wait the norm in the US for federal elections?

Here there are so many places that having polling stations. And then when you get to your location there are a lot of individual stations depending on your address. I've never waited more than 5 minutes.

The parking ticket was given by a separate department then the police.  I doubt the meter guy has to appear in court.  I'm not exactly sure how the procedure would be in person, I can however contest it in writing.  I don't think it is right that I can't contest it until I have paid for the ticket.  If I win, then I get the money back.  Since I don't trust I'll ever see my money again I'm not paying for it up front.

I had a good visit with my Mom at the hospital.  I do have to admit it was a little difficult watching her having to be helped around in her bed when the nurse came in to take her vitals.  It was the first time I saw just how weak she is right now.  And I could also tell that she was trying to "show off" for me when she was doing her breath test too.

I did get a chance to talk with her nurse, and her basic response was, "I know what you mean.  I've had parents in the hospital too." ;) I asked a bunch of questions, and she gave me the same follow-up literature that she gave my Mom and Dad.  Thankfully, my Dad was already committing to memory the dietary guidelines.  :)

I was in St. Paul the day after they tried the horn and it worked!  I saw the "great piece" of the ship...or at least a big hunk of it, that I think they may have brought up after your trip.  (Is that right?)  I find everything you say about the trip fascinating.  Thanks for sharing

Yes, Cilla, although the piece dropped off back into the sea, they had a tracking device attached to it.  That was important because it dropped off several miles from the orignal location.  In August of 1998, RMS Titanic, Inc. went back to the site and raised the piece to the surface.  Although I missed out on my chance to be photographed touching the piece, I did see it in the touring exhibition at the Seattle Science Center.

I was also glad that my Dad took as long a "break" as he did.  He had been there since this morning, and while he was down in the cafeteria, he was able to call his friends and relatives and give them updates.

My brother, Don, is coming down from Fairfax tomorrow morning, and I think we're going to do some "re-wiring" of the computer set-up here at the house.  Right now, everything is upstairs, and I think we're going to move it all downstairs to make it easily accessible for my Mom.  -And she wants us to set up a Skype account too.  -Apparently, everyone "back home in the Philippines" is now Skype-ing.

After I left the hospital, I headed over to Steve's...  -After I finished crying (finally), we headed to Joe's Inn for dinner.  I satisfied my craving for their Spaghetti a la Greek - baked spaghetti topped with feta, provolone and romano cheeses, and meat sauce, and Steve had one of the cheesiest Chicken Parmigiana's either of us had ever seen.

We were going to go to Bev's for dessert - more ice cream - but Steve mentioned that the small market across the street from Joe's Inn was now carrying baked goods and other treats from one of my favorite Richmond restauranteurs, Stella Dikos.  :)  And when I looked at the display case, I saw a lot of wonderful "memories": Greek Wedding Cookies, Greek Style Cheesecake, Pumpkin Cheesecake, Banana Pudding, etc.  They were also selling some of her savories: tzatziki, house-cured olives, marinated fava beans, moussaka, pastitsio...  However, what I was most pleased to see were the loaves of Stella's famous breads.  Not only were they selling her amazing "table bread", but they also had loaves of her Apple & Black Walnut Cinnamon Streusel Bread.

Each Christmas, Stella would give me a loaf of that bread as a Christmas present, and I would also buy a couple extras to give to others or for parties.  It's been four or five years since I've had the bread, and, well... I bought a loaf of it tonight to take back to New York, as well as a "muffin loaf" of it for tomorrow's breakfast.  Alas, Stella was not there tonight, but they did have a little notebook where people could write messages for her.  So, I did.  :)

Trust me, I'm way ahead of you on that one.

Oh, I do have a correction to make.  When my Dad got back to the room, I asked him why my Mom was not using a blood glucose meter since she's a diabetic.  He said that she has been using one, and is hoping to get a better one.  I guess she's just been "hiding" it well.  However, I have to say that with the contents of the fridge and pantry here, and just watching how and what my Mom eats whenever I'm down here for a visit, I never would have guessed that she was a diabetic.  ???

...And since my Dad is a prostate cancer survivor, I have a bit of a laundry list of things to get checked for at my next physical.

Well I bought an HP Pavilion 6635 Computer and printer from EBAY on Wednesday.  It is for use at work.  Not much memory, but we just need it to load BookLog and run the cash register....

It arrived today!!  And it works.   I will be taking it to the store on Sunday, and my brother in law will try to load BookLog onto it....hopefully he won't crash and burn it.

Total for the entire system, with all cables, disks, and shipping:  $51.......

And on a related note... Pardon me for almost-getting political here for a moment, but...

During the second hour of today's "All Things Considered" on NPR, they had some "incredible" coverage of the current political climate in West Virginia.  Well balanced, and it showed the good and bad of both sides of the issues and the aisle.

West Virginia Voters Wrestle With Race, Rumors (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=95837817)

*They also ran a wrap-up of the debate, and what it revealed about both candidates. Well worth a listen too.

This is my friend John Cavins Baughman, Jr.  Here he is in the Bahamas last winter.  This is the photo he enclosed in last year's Christmas card.

I first met him in 1985 when he played Sir Joseph Porter KCB in a "young people's" production of HMS PINAFORE.  He was so funny and a very nice guy and an audience favorite.

We did several shows together.  He was Mr Applegate when I directed DAMN YANKEES and he was Boris Kolyenhoff the ballet instructor when I was Grandpa Vanderhoff in YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU.  I was Froggy when he directed THE FOREIGNER....

He always came to see my shows even though he moved up to the big city of Indianapolis and moved on in his life.

Some emotional troubles - but we were always only a phone call or email away for each other.

Next I pulled PINOCCHIO off the shelf and watched it. I got the notice today about the Blu-ray release of the movie next March (and a new Platinum edition of the DVD, too), and it reminded me I hadn't seen it in a long time, so I watched it tonight. The color on that old DVD is very rich, but I could certainly see places where I'm sure there will be clean-up and repair. Even this old DVD had a Dolby Digital 4.0 audio track, but no mono track. That won't make folks happy today if they don't include the original mono along with any repurposed audio mix.

I wasn't thrilled with tonight's GHOST WHISPERER episode. It was OK, but once again, Jim doesn't get to play any part in the story, and I'm just not digging Jaime Kennedy. Also, I'm really tired of these stories based on computer alternate realities. This is the third one I've seen on CBS.

LIFE had a good mystery at its core, but I can see why the show just isn't catching on with more viewers. What with him still trying to find her framed him and the story with Adam Arkin's rather uninteresting character, the show definitely seems scattershot in its storytelling.
