Thank you, BK.

I've finally found somebody else who agrees with me that GRAND ILLUSION is not the greatest thing since chopped liver.

And, here I thought that I was alone out there is the world.

Favorite TV cop shows:

The early years:

DRAGNET & RAQCKET SQUAD  (Years later, Reed Hadley was a publicity client of mine.)

The 1970s:

THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO (I've been watchinng these again on DVD and, unfortunately, they do not hold up that well.)

The 90s:

NYPD BLUE (I love this show.  Never missed an episode.  I wish they'd put more seasons out on DVD.)

Current or Recent:

THE SHIELD and THE WIRE (2 of the best shows ever on TV)

I had a brain fart last night and kept referring to BK's December benefit in NYC as "Back to Bacharach" when it is of course "Bacharach to the Future."

I'm sure I used the right name when I talked to Ann Miner about the press release, though.

Good morning, all! DR JRand58, I am so sorry about the death of your friend. I read your notes about him tyhis morning, and I hope that the service for him is more a joyful celebration of his 42 years than a mournful farewell.

I'm off to Toyland very shortly to deal with things that were put off for the past weeks because of another's commitment, hopefully organize what work needs to be accomplished in the near future, and learn the status of various parts of two different jobs.

DR MattH, I agree with you completely about GHOST WHISPERER, and its plot this week reminded me of a cautionary warning for children against predators although I thought the teenager in danger was such a pill she deserved what her stupidity brought on. It was nice to see my old acquaintance Raphael Sbarge, whom I haven't seen sicne he did the AH WILDERNESS at Lincoln Center. I wished afterwards, though, that I'd realized CRUSOE was on for two hours.

I disagree about LIFE, which gets a plea for viewers in this week's ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: I loved the Arkin-career storyline, especially when the students were all noisily typing on their keyboards, and I thnk the show's a great ride, although I do miss the creepy Robin Weigert and think Donal Logue's character is a waste of writing and space.

And the word of the day is: ACRITOCHROMACY!

There was quite a pile-up at the highway intersection the other day.  A couple of the drivers admitted they hadn't read the stop lights correctly, so I guess it was a case of the ACRITOCROMATIC leading the ACRITOCROMATIC.

I am a big fan of GRAND ILLUSION, but I've never quite gotten the worship of THE RULES OF THE GAME among Renoir's films. I always feel on the outside looking in when discussions of its greatness gets going. A film professor of mine simply worshipped THE RULES OF THE GAME.

Hard to believe that on this day in October of 2001, I received some legal papers from a certain company that would teach more about evil than I ever needed to know.  It wasn't just a Touch Of Evil - it as a whole wall of evil.  Perhaps I'll read a work of fiction today - oh, yes, I think I'll pull out a novel by my very own self entitled Rewind.  Haven't looked at it in quite some time.

Thanks for the vibes.  I really think this is a no win situation.  Seems if we contest & lose the first round we can pay another $25 to contest again.  If we win all is returned, if not they keep it.  I have a feeling their goal is to make as much money as possible & it would be a very expensive trip to contest the ticket.

The Tarte Tatin was with apples.  Tatin is apparently the name of a hotel in France, where the tart originated.  The cook was going to make a traditional apple pie, and the filling was cooking too fast, so she put just the top pastry on top of the apples and cooked it quickly in the oven.  When she instinctively turned it upside town, the hotel guests really went for it and culinary history was made..

THE CLOSER

But of course!     :)

TOD: THE CLOSER, but of course!

Speaking of...this was in the works for quite some time but it has finally been announced:

"Lost" amid the hubbub surrounding Amy Sedaris' sitcom deal with Fox may have been the juicy nugget that the Strangers with Candy alumna will be guesting on multiple episodes of TNT's The Closer. But rather than playing kin to Kyra Sedgwick, as some of you would have spec'd, Sedaris is coming on as Fritz's sister.

But make no mistake, you'll get plenty of Sedaris-Sedgwick action.

Closer creator James Duff tells me that Sedaris' Claire Howard whiles away her days as "a psychic who's wandered the occupational landscape, taking on, at various times, the job of yoga instructor, glass blower, Cirque de Soleil student...." Since federal agent Fritz is a bit embarrassed by Claire's "overt spirituality," Brenda winds up spending quality time with her soon-to-be sister-in-law — to the point that Claire brings her mad skillz to one of the PHD's MCD's cases. In doing so, Ms. Howard will form a "special bond" with one of the detectives, I am told.

Can't wait!

DR Cillaliz, I think you will like WW. I joined in July and without making a concerted effort, have lost 17 lbs aas of today. Of course, I need to lose so much that I don't even feel like I've lost anything, but it has definitely changed my way of eating by making me more aware of which foods have a high point value and I'm now trying to make healthier choices. I use the online tools to keep track of points and it's very easy. I even lost when I went to NY, despite the mozzarepa, the macarons and Nobu!

Congratulations to Edi on your weight loss and best wishes to Cilla for joining WW.  No matter how much you lose, please don't send it to Washington.

Thanks, TCB. I was inspired by Vixmom and bk, plus a dear friend had joined and she said that she wanted me to be around for a long time, so I joined her there. I wanted to do something about it so she called me just at the right time!

After several more emails from the guy organizing West Seattle's Frances Farmer Day, I'm feeling a lot better about it.  It turns out my research and article were the whole genesis behind the idea.  The fact that the cafe where they're meeting is called Shadowland is evidently just a weird little coincidence.  They are really wanting to set the record straight about the spurious untruths in both the book and the Lange feature, so hopefully a few more people will know the real story.

Maybe he can start a fund to get the $25,000 for her Walk of Fame star.

I joined WW my senior year in college, after I misheard someone and thought that the Freshman 15 was supposed to be the Freshman-through-Senior 50.  I took all 50 lbs off and maintained that until getting knocked up with this little guy.  I'm hoping to get back on WW soon to help get rid of the last of the pregnancy pounds, but since I'm not currently receiving a paycheck, it's not in the budget.  Hopefully in January I'll get to start again.

On a completely different note, does anyone have a rough idea of how much it costs to have a piano tuner make a house call?  Our little spinet is in dire need of some attention.  I do not want my darling baby son exposed to such awful sounds at such a young age.  He might grow up thinking that an octave should actually sound like a very minor ninth.

I don't have mono - maybe I have stereo?  Believe me, if I haven't had a real appetite for a week now, I'm hardly in the mood to be kissing someone.  But, maybe I'll go over to Ventura Blvd. later and see if there's anyone worth kissing there.  I can only tell you that had I wanted to be kissing the night of that event in West Hollywood, I would have had no problemo.

Can't wait!

I glad to hear that my former pretend gf is not sitting around pining away over me and is doing something constructive with her life.

Now if only my current pretend gf Tina Fey would leave her husband and join me in a sham of a marriage, things would be great.

We're STILL on page four?  Someone recently gave me the CD to Alvin and the Chipmunks, the score.  It sounds identical to every other score for this type of film written in the last ten years.  Which means the composer had to ape almost note for note the temp tracks that were used.  Having not seen the film, I can only say that this score seems so inappropriate at times - at times it sounds like it should be for a beautiful, snowy love story.  Or a war film.

DR Ann - Piano tunings seem to run anywhere from $75-150 now - no matter which part of the country you're in.  However, some tuners have started offering deals if you pay for a certain number of tunings all at once.  Steve's piano tuner comes in every four months.  He paid for two years of tuning up front, and ended up saving about $25 per tuning.  Not a bad deal.

*Sometimes you can get a break on the price if the tuner you call happens to have an apprentice.  Since the tuning will take a little longer, they sometimes drop the price for the "inconvenience".

OMG!   You saw Kevin Bacon in the flesh (so to speak)?

I think I may have mentioned this before, but...

There were a series of TV movies and "regular" movies that were being filmed in Richmond over the period of about a year and a half.  It turned out that either Kyra or Kevin was working on one of them, and usually back to back.  So, both Kevin and Kyra became regulars at the two restaurants down the street from my apartment.  Kevin would also sometimes break out his guitar and play an impromptu set, and if his brothers happened to be traveling through, then the "Bacon Brothers" would make an appearance too.  And Mr. Bacon like his hamburgers too!

*And, DR edisaurus may be able to confirm or "deny" this, but I'm also thinking that the first season of "The Closer" shot some exteriors here in Richmond.  ???

Does anyone here have any interest in three lobby cards from BEAUTY ON PARADE, with Lola Albright, that were shipped to me by mistake?  Yours for shipping costs if you want.

Why don't you just re-list them on E-bay and hope that the "intended" buyers bids on them again?  ;)

I've mentioned here before that I don't sell on eBay any longer due to their insane new policies on feedback and PayPal.  The seller who sent these to me by mistake said I could keep them for my trouble, but I have no interest in them.

Gotcha.

So, will he be sending the correct items now?  -And I guess if he let you keep the other items, does that mean that they're not worth that much anyway?

I'm watching a Bravo rerun of TOP DESIGN. I don't know which is funnier: the idiotic headgear of judge Kelly Wearstler or the stupidity of Wizzit(?)'s belief that he is an opera singer. Oy!

I have absolutely no idea what is up with Kelly Wearstler's hair and wardrobe this season.  It's truly puzzling.  Last season, she did have a few moments - mainly some really bad "hair days" - but this season... I just keep rolling my eyes everytime the camera cuts to her.  -And I keep waiting for the other judges just to slap her upside her head, "Whattup Gurl?!?!??!"

Now she's wearing a pointy blue turban that I would swear has no color coordination to anything else she's wearing. I swear she dresses in the dark.

So...

When I was getting read to head to the hospital earlier, my Dad called me.  He said he was walking to his car, but started feeling light-headed, so he headed back to my Mom's room.  He had the nurse take his blood pressure, it was running quite high.  So, he said he was going to stay put for a while, instead of coming home for the afternoon.

I got there about 45 minutes later.  He seemed OK.  And a former co-worker of my Mom's had also just paid a visit - with her three kids in tow!  She drove down from Fairfax for the afternoon to surprise my Mom.  Both my Mom and Dad appreciated the visit.  -And the teddy bear.  Well...

After we watched some TV - some painting program on PBS - my Dad got up again to walk around.  Well, he was still feeling light-headed.  So, he sat back down.  I then went back out to the nurse's station to ask if they could take his blood pressure again... Instead of still being spiked it had now dropped 50 points (both numbers).  Thankfully, the nurse was on my side, and "suggested" that I take him home so that he could take a proper nap.  Of course, at first my Dad wanted to drive his car back on his own - with me following behind him - but, thankfully, as we were turning around in the parking deck, he changed his mind and said, "Just keep driving."  Whew!  Good.

I know he hasn't been sleeping this past week, and I also know that he's probably getting tired out from sitting under the fluorescent lights in the hospital.  I also know that he's not "admitting" to the stress of the past week either.   -And then there's the "hospital air" deal too.  Some family friends just came over, and the wife is a nurse, so she's double checking his blood pressure and blood sugar.  *My mom called them from the hospital.  ;)

I called my brother, Don, to see if he was still coming down tonight, and it looks like he won't be able to come down until tomorrow morning.  Thankfully, I don't work Monday until 1:00pm, so I can still grab an early(!) train or bus that morning, and get back in time to play.  -And since I'm done at 6:00, I'll have plenty of time to rest that night.  There's a slim chance that if my brother does make it down tonight, I'll go ahead and head back late tonight, but I think I'm just gonna stay put for another evening.  There's been enough "unknowns" for me to deal with the past couple of days, and I don't need anymore.

*And, of course, as I was talking with my Dad, and he told me about some of the medications he's currently on, well...  Just a few more things for my physician to keep an eye out for.

I'm back from killing time.  Time deserved to be killed, frankly.  I did do the long jog this morning, but I wasn't ready to do it, and it now feels like I've destroyed every muscle in my back and legs.  I'm so sick of feeling yucky and this flu or whatever it is just sticks - you start to feel better, then you feel worse, then you feel better, then worse.

bk - STOP RUNNING!  Well, at least take one day off.  You're exhibiting the classic signs of exhaustion. Your body obviously needs to take a day off.  And with all the other stuff you're dealing with, I'm sure that "stress" has also been taking its toll on your body (more than you would like to admit and/or be aware of).

I know I'm - well, we - are probably just talking to a brick wall at this point, but, please... You have some crazy-busy weeks coming up.  Rest.  Get better.  Rest.

Is LADIES OF THE  STREET the same as STREETS OF SHAME? If so it is a wonderful film! I haven't seen it in about 20 years, but back in the 1980s I rented the video many times.

No, STREET OF SHAME is the last disc in the box that I'm going to watch tonight. The actual title was LADIES OF THE NIGHT.

Consider some options:

Shagging can make you slimmer, if you do enough of it. It can also help the two of you fall for each other all over again. Requiring no monthly fee — dress code optional – you can "sexercise" yourself into shape. This is one gym membership you’ll never want to drop.

Combining sex and fitness is like killing two birds with one stone. Sex gets you fit. And being fit makes you want to have more sex.

Bruce, good-TAKE TOMORROW OFF!!!  The following day, if you are feeling better, go for a nice long walk instead of jogging.  You need more than one day of feeling better before returning to your regular activities.

And, remember, DR elmore has now lost 24+ pounds. And in just a matter of a few weeks.  No jogging involved. A three mile walk is a good rough equivalent to a one mile run.  And if you power walk, it could actually be the same as a good run.

*And when was the last time you changed your shoes?  Have you checked the wear patterns on your soles lately?  Worn out shoes can cause major back problems.  -Trust me on that one - I know from experience.

True, but DR elmore is also eating small portions throughout the day.

So true about shoes that don't support properly, for jogging or walking.

Mmmmmmm, a Bacon burger!

Oh, you beat me to it. I figured someone would

DR Cilla, can you also take the frozen meals to work to have at lunchtime?  Good idea to stock up when they are on sale.;)

Yes, I have a little fridge at the office that has a freezing compartment that holds about one or two of those little boxes.  We also have a microwave so I've been taking them every so often.  It's something I do during the winter a lot. That and get the single portions of soup that you can put in the microwave.

This monring I went for my mammogram - I had never been to this particiular facility before.  I  must say it was a very nice setup.  They had nice quilted cloth robes instead of the  usual paper smock thingies and then they had a special waiting room wher you could watch a big screen HD TV and eat fresh baked chocolate chocolate chip cookies and lounge in your robe while the techs read your  scans

Unfortunately, for me,  they decided they had to redo the scans on the right side three more times and have now decided I shoudl go have a sonogram of the area ... "just to be safe"

vibes please

DR Vixmom, I like the idea of quilted robes & cookies.

If you don't have to drive for awhile following the test, a mild tranquilizer really helps keep your body relaxed & it hurts less.  Alas I was only able to do that once at the NIH, boy though did it make a difference.

Many thanks for the continued thoughts a vibes for me today.  HHW is the BEST.

The memorial was lovely.  There were about 100 people there.  The church had its cornerstone placed in 1828, and there a many beautiful stained glass windows.   As we sat in the pews waiting for things to begin,  the sun rose to just the right angle, that  yours truly was bathed a golden light through a stained glass window high in the chapel wall.....

I was next to last on the program.  We heard from John's scoutmaster - John was an Eagle Scout, John's neighbor who remembered John at 4 years old driving over on his tricycle to greet the new neighbors, and one of John's school teachers.  The Pastor also read a very nice card from Miss Phyllis Diller.  My part of the program went well, I am told.  I hesitated to mention the title of the musical DAMN YANKEES, but I did it anyway and there were no lightning flashes.

Afterwards there were light refreshments, greetings, and a video of John's life which was very moving....it played and you could stop to watch for a few minutes if you cared to.

It was very good - the only jarring note an unfortunate key change during the piano rendition of "Some Enchanted Evening" during the musical prelude.....whew.

Thanks again, HHW.

Vixdad got up early this morning - ran some new electrical  connections and got everything ready for a smooth installation of the new dishwasher which was delivered (finally) at 4:44 PM.

Unfortunately the new machine is shaped in sucha way that he now has a major plumbing job in front of him - rerouting the water pipes

I am just so luck that he is so clever at doing all this sort of work - I couldn't imagine the cost if we had to have someone in

Wow a new dishwasher!

I remember our very first dishwasher, which must have been in 1957 or 1958.....it was a top loader.  When you raised the lid, one rack came up with it.  You took the other rack out to load it and then put it back in.  And when it was running it sounded like a jet airplane.  But it got the dishes clean!

Vixdad and I bought out last Whirlpool dishwasher about 16 or 17 years ago, used it everyday and it never was serviced once in all that time.  The timer mechanism developed  a fault and there were no replacement parts available

We bought another Whirlpool based upon our experience with the last one
I am hopeful that once we get this installed that we will have similar luck

I then came home and the master for the new Kritzerland release arrived - it sounds better than it has any right to - the source material, like Laurette, was not optimal, but the mastering guy did a splendid job, at least on the first score - haven't heard the second one.  I'm going to give the advance announcement tomorrow - like Laurette, I expect this to be a quick sellout, so get your orders in.  Once it's officially announced I expect it to be gone in three or four days if it follows the same pattern.  I've basically been told that my online dealers are going to order the same quantities.

I did have work to do, however, and watched the last of the Mizoguchi films in the box: STREET OF SHAME. By far the best of the four films in the box, there was enough plot in this movie for FOUR movies. Each of the four main prostitutes had an interesting backstory that could have been developed into a feature film.

But the slice of brothel life that we did get was certainly fascinating.

With the recent release of the brilliant L.A. CONFIDENTIAL on Blu-ray (which I haven't bought yet), I took the DVD release of the film off the shelf tonight and watched the first hour (had to spend the last hour of the evening writing up my thoughts on the two Mizoguchi films I watched today).

The transfer looks pretty good for one that old, but the Blu-ray will definitely be on my CHristmas list. I love the film and would love to see a sharper, stronger image.

My sister and my niece came over today and helped move some things out of the way in my living room (it's cluttered...I don't de-clutter very often ::)) because my parents are buying me a fold-down-sleeper-type sofa that has storage under the cushions! :D My mom saw the sofa in a Shopko flyer at 50% off (normally $400, on sale for $199!) and even though the sale ended last weekend, I was able to get a rain check.  On Thursday, I got the call that it had arrived and we're going to pick it up tomorrow.  I actually liked the style and color of the green one in the ad next to it, but the storage space is what is the real selling point.  And the tan one looks a little sturdier.

It will actually be my Christmas present from my parents, which is fine.  I need a couch/sleeper so that if (when) my 3rd floor bedroom gets very hot in the summer (again), I'll have some place downstairs to sleep and be cooler and since it includes storage, I can keep the sheets and things in the couch.  And the color fits in my living room.  Anyway, here's the ad with both couches:

Well, I've got a LOT of DVR watching to do!  There's a message from Comcast on my DVRs that says "On 10/21 at 3am we will upgrade software on all HD boxes. Each box can take up to 45 min to load the software and will not display a picture. If after 90 min service does not return call...."  Larry, my sister's boyfriend, was talking to someone at Comcast and they said that what a person has recorded won't be lost...but a friend of Larry's thinks that programs will be lost.  The last time that they upgraded the regular DVRs, I did lose programs. :P Fortunately, I have my HD-DVR pretty much cleared out, and I'll be able to watch "live" what I have set to record, so that shouldn't be a problem...unless the upgrade also affects regular DVRs.  I also have one of those and it's more than 70% filled.

Don't jog!  And eat more often!  Stop "starving" your body for four to eight hour periods each day.

If you gain a pound or two and get better over the next week or so, better that than continuing to get sick and wasting away - literally.

-And you obviously have some sort of infection and/or virus.  See a doctor.

I also suspect you've been over-medicating yourself with the Mucinex and Ny-quil.  -That stuff can really do a number on your body if you've been taking them and haven't really had the "proper" symptoms.  Besides, those medications are meant to "relieve symptoms", they are not meant to "cure" you.

And "resting" means - even if you still take your jog - not getting in your motor car and going someplace and meeting people.  Stay home, stay in bed.  Rest.  Really rest.

Watching SNL... And been trying to figure out how to adjust the settings on my Dad's TV in order to get the "widescreen" to properly display as "widescreen" instead of 4:3 stretched to widescreen - and still cutting out/leaving off the sides of the pic.

Sounds like overscan to me. . .

Well, the issue is that my brother bought a widescreen TV for my Dad's room.  They subscribe to HD cable service.  However, there's no HD box in my Dad's room. So... ???

Oh... One final(?) thing for bk (and any other interested parties)...

Under the Calorie Calculator, they even provide a "zig zag" weekly calorie guide:

Calorie cycling provides same amount of calories per week, but 'tricks' your body by constantly changing daily calories. This helps to prevent or break plateaus.

I'm going to rest no matter what.  I haven't taken Ny-Quil for days, and am going to stop Mucinex, since it's not really doing anything.  I have the chills right now.  So weird.  I'm sure the government provided this lovely flu, as they do every year, when they experiment with germ warfare.

And for any DRs who may have missed - or are currently missing - tonight's "SNL", apparently, some of the highlight clips are already up at NBC.com.

And, I have to say, that regardless of what you think of her and/or her political party, Sarah Palin was a very good sport, and they wrote some great material for her and the cast tonight.

I watched three Dragnet episodes, which were absolutely fascinating, as Jack Webb had a different partner - these were from the very beginning of the series, I gather, in 1952 early 1953.  They still were crediting the radio series at that point, and I think they were actually just recycling the radio scripts, as there is only one guest star in each of these episodes (the guest star in the first I watched was Lee Marvin, who was absolutely superb).
