Title: THE NEVER-ENDING STORY
Post by: bk on October 19, 2008, 12:02:59 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were never-ending and told a story, and now it is time for you to post until the never-ending cows come home.  They're coming - at least that's their story.

bk, I hope the day of rest does the trick. If not, then maybe it's time to see a Dr. (Not a Dear Reader!)

I don't like taking antibiotics but sometimes I've had to when something like this persists for so long. After they knock it out, I think: "Why didn't I do that sooner?"

Last night, the wife and I went to see APPALOOSA at the local Austin cinema.

I love a good western, and this one had a lot going for it.

Ed Harris, who co-stars, also directed the film and he did a very good job of re-creating New Mexico of 1882.  The cinematography was impressive and the performances were all first-rate.

There were also some very memorable scenes.

The problem was with the script.  It rambled on, very episodic, without a very strong spine.  Indeed, the last 20 minutes felt very anti-climatic.

In fact, I'm still trying to answer the question: "What was the story about?"

On a scale of 1-10, I'd give APPALOOSA a 7.

But, who am I?   Ebert & Roper?

[Sorry, BK.]

Today, we're going to a restaurant, Green Pastures.

We ate there the last time we were here in Austin and they have a fantastic Sunday brunch.  The best I've ever had.

The restaurant is located in an old converted Southern mansion, located on what was once a wealthy estate that was owned by the Faulk family.

If you ever come to Austin, you have to try this place.

Today is a WORK day....oh well.  I am going to take my fabulous $51 computer and hook it up so that tomorrow my brother in law can install the software on it to make it run the register, and then my sister can call the computer guy after my brother in law messes it up, and HE can install the software to make the register run.  Which will probably cost more than the computer did.

Quite chilly here (40) this morning and only getting into the 60s today. Yep, the sweat shirt and sweat pants are now part of the wardrobe. Shorts are put away, at least for now. It does promise to warm back up early in the week before plunging again around Thursday.

Today I'll start work on DYNASTY, Season 3, Volume 2. Looks like Jack Coleman joins the show in the first episode in the box as the "new" Steven Carrington. This should be a fun assignment since I *WAS* a big DYNASTY fan for its first 5 years. The series was at its apex during seasons 3-5.

Since I have no TV stored up on the DVR to watch, I'll finish L.A. CONFIDENTIAL while I cook and eat lunch. There's about an hour left. It is certainly one of THE great films of the 1990s.

I did get my RODAN/WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS DVD yesterday along with another HAMMER HORROR set.  I watched GARGANTUAS last night with a very nice looking Russ Tamblyn.  And I watched most of the documentary on the GODZILLA movies/Toho studios staff, very interesting.

Good morning, all. I aslept late and now I have my walk to plan.

Last night I watched a BBC movie (short: 79 mintes) about Beau Brummell with James Purefoy as Brummell and Matthew Rhys as Lord Byron. I found parts of it interesting and other matters vague with a lot of needless out-of-focus shots for whatever artistic reasons exist in the director's mind. I need to read a Brummell biography for further clarification.

Today, Toyland Volume Two and some time with THE MOST HAPPY FELLA. First the walk.

BK, do you have health insurance? if so, get your butt to a doctor for some tests and a flu shot. I thought I had the flu and it was diabetes and blood sugar complications. You've been claiming the flu for much longer than I did and you're not showing signs of any ability to overcome this and, as your friend, I suggest you stop procrastinating and see someone. I wouldn't recommend my doctor, but there must be several good ones in LA out of the many thousands who don't specialize in plastic surgery.

That's it for the nonce.

So...

My Dad is already over the hospital.  He hitched a ride earlier this morning with some family friends, since his car was still in the hospital's garage. My brothers just called, and they're finally on their way down, so, hopefully, a little after 2:00 we'll all head over to the hospital for a family visit.

In the meantime, I'm doing my laundry.  Since I had worn almost everything I had packed this past week, I figured I might as well return to NYC with a "clean" suitcase.  *Although, I have to say my parents washing machine is a little confusing.  There are no "in-betweens" when it comes to the water level selection - it's either "small", "large" or "super".  Of course, the guide inside the lid says their should be options for "small", "medium" or "large". There are also two wash cycle options: "White" and "Casuals".  But, again, the information on the inside of the lid says to look for "Cottons" and "Colors".  ???  -Who knows?  Maybe they got a deal on it.  ;)

One of the things I love/loved/miss about Richmond is WCVE, their local PBS, "IdeaStations" affiliate.  They just have such a great variety of programming, and they were responsible for many a lazy morning sitting in bed listening to the radio.  -Such as this morning.

This weekend's "This American Life" episode, "How to Win Friends and Influence People", was a rebroadcast from a show back in 2001.  However, the four "acts" are still amazingly relevant.

Acts Three and Four are loosely based on "Superman", and I suspect that more than a few DRs would appreciate the sentiment (Act Three) and the humor (Act Four) of them.

This American Life: 198: How to Win Friends and Influence People (http://thisamericanlife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?episode=198)

*Their "Pu-Pu Player" window will pop up and start downloading/streaming the show - after you click on "Full Episode" of course.  Act One is a David Sedaris "essay", so... :)  -But if you wish to fast forward, just wait for the program to load fully, then click away at the time bar.  -You can guesstimate where things start according to the timings given for each story/act.

Yesterday, my friend Stan was getting packed up to return to the rehab center from the hospital.  Before he left, the hospital ordered another CP Scan on the head injury he received when he fell out of bed in the ICU.  They found that there was bleeding on the brain, and they rushed him back into surgery.  They ended up putting two holes in his skull to aid in the draining of the blood.

And the new Kritzerland limited edition CD is Bernard Herrmann's A Christmas Carol and A Child Is Born.  These were both TV specials in the mid-1950s.  Both have either narration and/or dialogue and some sound effects - both have songs by Herrmann as well as wonderful underscore by him, as well.  The release is definitely archival in nature - A Child Is Born only came out on a promo 10" record, one of the most collectible of all time.  A Christmas Carol comes from acetates made at the time of the broadcast - many years ago I found a reel-to-reel tape made directly from those acetates and have just sat on it for years, until I finally unearthed it several months ago.  The mastering engineer has done an amazing job cleaning them up (especially A Child Is Born) and they sound very clear and nice, with the occasional anomaly.

The running time for both scores combined is over fifty minutes.  Given that it's our Christmas release and the archival nature of the recordings, we again are offering this at a special price of $15.98 (plus 3.75 shipping).  I'm not officially announcing this for another week - so you hainsies/kimlets have a week jump on everyone else (and remember, Laurette completely sold out in less than four days).  Payment the usual way via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  Be sure to put the title of the CD in the paypal invoice.

You could have gone with "It is a time for this to be a thing with which I could be over" - though that does lack a certain snappy touch.

I had a nice bowl chicken soup - I did a little google research on deli chicken soup with noodles and chicken and was shocked at how low-cal and low fat gram it is.  I also had a piece rye bread with a tiny bit of butter.  So, I can definitely eat something later.  It feels so weird not to have jogged.  The soup was very good and very calming and I am feeling a bit better today, but I think I've learned that unless I have that for two days in a row, I'm not counting my chicken soups before they hatch.

I finished L.A. CONFIDENTIAL while I cooked and ate lunch. For a transfer as old as it is, it's really very solid looking. Upconverted, it looks more than acceptable. Yes, an HD version would be great, but I can easily live with this one until the price comes down to something reasonable for a catalog title. (If Amazon can charge $13.95 for THE SHINING and $17.95 for BATMAN BEGINS, I expect to see comparable prices for things like BONNIE AND CLYDE and L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, all issued by Warners.)

I spent the rest of the afternoon watching the first four episodes of DYNASTY in the box set. The quality of the transfers is splendid, much sharper and deeply colorful than the broadcast versions. One can see just how much make-up (VERY theatrical) Joan Collins in wearing.

I'll hand it to her, however. She knew this was a renaissance for her career, and she is acting the hell out of these soapy scripts. The scripts are really quite laughable now (I didn't laugh then), but it's still been enjoyable revisiting these episodes.

In the last episode I watched, the bandages finally came off to reveal Jack Coleman as the new Steven. I had forgotten all about Kirby and Adam's fixation on her (and her fixation on Jeff). Fallon is still played by Pamela Sue Martin, endlessly more effective than Emma Samms.

So, a nice reunion with the Carringtons and the Colbys. I should be able to get at least three more episodes watched tonight. There are twelve in all, so that would leave me with five for tomorrow.

I have the CD to "Marguerite."  I liked it, but didn't love it.  To me, the CD felt incomplete (story-wise) in ways that other cast recordings don't.  I don't know why.  I'd love to hear a more complete recording of the score.

Just been watching Dragnet episodes.  I had no idea that not only did they have a different partner for Jack Webb originally, there was also a different Frank Smith originally - Herb Ellis - have no idea how many episodes he did before Ben Alexander came on.  The minute Alexander appeared you knew instantly that they'd found the perfect match for Webb, because he brought humor to the show, in the same way Harry Morgan would in Dragnet 1967.

Good afternoon.  I had a lovely morning.  My mom came over last night and bottle fed Toby at the 3 am feeing, so I slept blissfully from 1 to 6:30, which is twice as long as I usually can.  Then we drove up to SeaTac (the town between Seattle and Tacoma, natch) and met my sister and father for our annual October birthday breakfast family gathering.  My sister lives in Seattle, my folks live on the other side of the state, and we live in Tacoma, so we gather in a central location each October to celebrate my mom's birthday on the 10th, my sisters on the 22nd, and DH Jed's on the 26th.  Toby was supposed to be another added to the list, but the boy evidently wanted a month to himself, so he went with Sept 6th.
We met at our usual diner called the Pancake Chef, where we all had delicious omelets with their signature silver dollar pancakes.  Jed had a spinach one, my sister and I had country omelets, and my folks split a crab one.  They were all delicious, and we spend an enjoyable time together.  I managed to nurse Toby in the wrap without anyone seeing anything they shouldn't, and he was a very contented little guy.
My mom came back and made us an apple pie with apples from our garden, and then she drove home.  Jed is now watching football and I am listening to George Hearn and Barbara Cook sing Too Many Mornings on my itunes.

Foolish Toby, October is a beautiful time of year.  On the other hand, September makes for great outdoor birthday parties.  Craig's parties were often twice the size of Bryan's, our almost Christmas baby.

Did you ever have something like this happen?  You know you have something - you know where it should be - it isn't there.  You look in all the places you might have moved it to - not there.  Anyone have any suggestions?  This happens to be the published sheet music for Herrmann's xmas carol, which I've owned for about five years (bought on eBay) - it's signed by Herrmann and his then-wife, Lucille Fletcher.  I've looked every place where I have sheet music - it used to be on the piano - was there for years, but I obviously moved it.  Looked in the bench - nothing.  I even looked in the closet with all my memorabilia, thinking I might have moved it in there to protect it.  Nothing.

Happens on a regular basis, every time I organize or move.

Finding old friends is great!  Aside from old friends I communicated with the other person in this world who shares my name.  She is really nice, wish she and Keith were related.

I have a funny story to tell you all about Sheena and I.  I was asleep and dreaming that I was riding a bus.  Not like one I go to work with but more like a school bus because 3 people could fit on the seat.

There were already 2 other people (I can't remember if I knew them or not) but the bus stopped and a very LARGE woman (and I mean very, very, very-that's 3 verys) got on.  The first thought that popped in my head was "Oh, no you don't.  You can't sit on this seat!".  Well, guess what?  She came and pushed us all over.

We were squeezed tighter then a vise.  I wiggled forward to try to make some kind of room but my back started to hurt.  I remember I said something like, "I'm sorry but I have to sit back--my back is killing me!"

Then I woke up.  Miss Sheena was balled against the small of my back and it hurt.  I starting laughing and told her, "Oh--So YOUR the fat woman in my dream!  Move over!"

Anyway, it gave me a chuckle to start the day with.

Kerry, all I need is the dough.  I had two albums I wanted to do about five years ago - a Previn album and a Bricusse/Newley album.

I would love a Bricusse / Newley album.  Hell, I would love to sing on a Bricusse / Newley album.

Ditto.

My sight, BTW, is still the same but with some extras.  I wasn't sure I was even going to tell the doctor about it but I've been seeing things out of the corner of my eyes.  Quick dark "flashes" for lack of a better word to call them.  Sometimes they startle me.  I thought the doctor would say I was seeing things and needed "help".

Well, it turns out that my old friend, stress, has reared his ugly head again.  I was told they are quite common when someone is highly stressed and are a warning sign to take things easy.  He wants me to monitor how often I see them because it could be the start of other problems.

Not to worry, I haven't seen them recently.  It was very common when Bear had his surgery and afterwards.  They seem to be going away now.

I've looked and looked and still can't find it.  I know I put a bunch of piano stuff in a big box which I moved to the garage, but I found that and it's been back in the house for a few weeks and I looked through it and while a lot of the piano stuff is there, this book isn't.  I suppose it could have ended up in another box, but I'm usually pretty careful with rare items like this.

I have a new board question.  I remember that before, I had to resize all my pictures before I could post them or I would throw us into widescreen.  Do I still have to resize them or do they do that themselves now?

With this new computer, I don't have any software to resize anything.  At least until I get Parallels on board with Windows XP and I can load all my old windows software.

A test for Ben's memory.

It looks familiar but I'm not sure. I do know what it's not, it's not La Lieutenance, it's not the Boudin Museum, it's not the birthplace of Erik Satie and it's not Ste. Catherine Church, which I used to pass when I walked from the cottage to the center of town, past the Patisserie and down to the Saturday marche.

Oh, Tom, 20 years of memories flood back. It was 1988 when I spent 6 weeks in Honfleur, picking wild blackberries and fraises (wild strawberries) which were growing outside the door of the cottage, walking through the old, old cemetery and walking along the Seine estuary. Mrs. Jolibois, the matriarch of the  family that owned the cottage (she walked halfway across France during WWII to trade her jewelry to get her husband out of a French Nazi prison camp during the occupation) was surprised that we picked the blackberries. They were not worth picking unless there were enough to make jam. They didn't eat them any other way. We loved them as a breakfast treat with a warm croissant and strong French coffee.

What a time. What memories. Thanks again my friend.

That's my pal Jeff Kaufman, who is a film music agent, and who I've known since he worked at the old Aron's records in the 1970s.

So...

My brothers ended up getting here within five minutes of each other, and so we were all able to head over the hospital shortly after everyone arrived.  John Michael, Alexandra, Alyssa and Emily were all well-behaved as they walked through the halls of the hospital - they were fascinated by how large the elevators were!  -And my brothers, Don and Mike, and myself were also well-behaved.

My Mom looked great, and all the kids were able to greet her with some very gentle hugs and kisses.  We hung out in her room for about half an hour.  The kids even left a "souvenir" for her - a customized Get Well message on the nurse's in-room dry erase board.  :)

-And it's looking like she could be coming home as early as tomorrow.  At the latest Tuesday.  :)

*It also turns out that the visiting nurse will be coming daily.  Twice daily, in fact.  :)

After we left the hospital, we all headed over to the huge(!!!!) new Bass Pro/Outdoor World (http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CFPage?storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&appID=94&storeID=67) store that opened near my parents' house.  It's basically like a Disneyland for Hunters and Fishermen.  And it really is a BIG store.  Two floors of outdoor gear, plus an indoor archery range, an educational aquarium, a trout pond, a fudge shop, a candy store, a restaurant and a bar(!!!!!).

The kids had a blast running around - although, I did find it a little disconcerting going by the gun displays and seeing a grandma buying hunting guns for her grandchildren.  -But that's just me.  ???  :-\

I took a bunch of pics with my iPhone, and will post them sometime soon on my Facebook page.  So, stay tuned.  :)

My brother, Don, was also able to set up the computer downstairs in my parents' bedroom.  The color laser(!) printer is still upstairs, but the whole house it wired for wireless.

*Don also very generously gave me a new MacBook - which I'm using right now.  -It's actually last year's model - not the new aluminum case ones - but still... :)  I'll still keep my other one - which is already four years old, but at least now I have some options. ;)

I guess it's my turn to ask for vibes for a friend.  My best friend's husband, Steve, found out this past week that he has bladder cancer.  He will find out tomorrow when he has to go to Mayo in Rochester to have his bladder removed.  They will also take the prostate and all the lymph nodes in the area, hopefully they will get it all.    The fascinating thing is, they will then make a new bladder out of a portion of his intestine...isn't it just amazing what they can do?

Anyway, vibes would be very much appreciated.  He has 4 cancer survivors in his family, so we're hoping that's a good omen.

Well... I'm glad I double-checked the bus times for my trip back.  I went back to the website for the company I took down here, and the only departures they had listed were for 7:00am.  Nope, no can do that.  So, I tracked down and old e-mail that a friend had sent me, and checked out the two other companies that run between here and NYC.  I brought up both sites, and they both had departures for either 12:30am or 1:00am.  Whew!

-Then I realized that all THREE companies are part of some "collective", so I'm guessing when I saw the 1:00am Richmond departures before, I was seeing them for the other bus companies since they're all listed on the same main site - even though the exact bus company name is not given until checkout.  -I also found out that the pick-up spot here in Richmond is different from where I was dropped off.  Again... Whew!

-Back to packing.

In any case, I'm gonna log off and shut down my (old) laptop now, and make sure I am indeed ready to head back to NYC.  I'll have my iPhone, but I think I'm going to try to sleep as much as I can on the bus.  -I also realized I get a bit of motion sickness on the bus while reading my iPhone, so...

And, yes, bk - a hot shower and an early evening are good things.

And what would be even better, would be taking a nice brisk walk tomorrow morning instead of the "long, hard jog".  If there's still a fragment of the crud in your system, four miles of bodily exertion ain't gonna help your cause.

I began my evening watching four more episodes of DYNASTY. Nice to see guest stars like David Hedison and John McCook. Steven's finally home and already his dad is clashing with him over his "lifestyle." [sigh] For all the bullcrap about loving his son, etc. he never, ever accepted him as a gay man. Of course, with all of Steven's marriages, I'm not sure he did a great job at accepting himself either.

That leaves me with only four more episodes of the show. These are the kinds of box sets that are a pleasure to tackle.

Next, I watched GENERAL HOSPITAL: NIGHT SHIFT which had Chad Allen's last episode of his four-part story arc with the gay doctor on the show. Hooray! They didn't kill him! That means they can bring him back next season and maybe make him a permanent love interest for Dr. Kyle.

Next was another sensational episode of TRUE BLOOD. Such fascinating characters; you just never know what going to happen next.

Cool! Our local newspaper had this bid and buy thing where you could go online and bid on items from their advertisers. The reserve was 1/2 price. So I bid and won a year membership to the Curves in my neighborhood for half price!  Yeah! I'm really happy about this.  Having an entire year paid for will make me go more often.  It worked last time I did that.  And they have a really cool new stretching machine. Not sure how that works, but you do it at the end of the workout.  I'll go pay for it tomorrow and can start this week. That makes me very happy

Next, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. The points about happiness mixed with jealousy were SO true. Pretty enjoyable episode but nothing special.

And I ended my evening watching the first half hour of BROTHERS & SISTERS. I'll be interested to see how various plots wrap up that were started in the first half hour. I should have plenty of time to get to it tomorrow.

I'm a fragment of the crud
Feel it coarsing through your blood
As it's happening

~~~SUPER VIBES FOR CILLA'S BEST FRIEND's HUSBAND STEVE!!~~~
I'm surprised we have ANY posts, what with this mad obsession with Facebook.  Of course, had many of you actually read Murder At The Grove, you would have known all about Facebook.
I have a Facebook account and just got some new friends today!  But I don't go there very often...at all.
Well...
I'm glad I got to the bus pick-up spot early. From what I could tell, the "12:30" bus left at 12:10. It was full, sold out, etc.  And it looks like this driver is going to go ahead and have this "1:00" bus leave at 12:30. This bus isn't full yet, but the driver is making sure that everyone puts their bags on top instead of on their seats. I'm guessing the trip from DC to NYC will be packed. We shall see...
My friend, Mike, had warned me that this particular bus line can get a bit unpredictable at times, and I guess it is.  And another friend had said that there were quite a number of Chinese, Korean, Thai, etc., workers who make regular treks between Richmond and NYC. They work here in Richmond during the week, and then head back to NYC on the weekends to see their families. And vice versa.
Thankfully, this particular bus does not have that "not-so-fresh" smell like my Richmond-bound one did.  ;)
Hmmm... The bus driver seems to be doing some creative seat shuffling and assigning.  Too bad I don't understand Chinese. Hmmm....
Hmmm...  So, "Tony", my driver, who is "nice guy", just asked me to move to another seat so that his "cousins" could sit together. -And then he started joking with some other "cousins" about someone else's ticket... "chicken an' broccoli, chicken an' broccoli...  Ha, ha, HA!!"
Hmmm...
Well, I do have to say that this is quite the "happy" bus. And it really does look like Tony has a bunch of family members - or at least close friends - on board. And they are all "happy" too.  And by "happy", I mean talking and chatting and laughing. So, let's see if they quiet down once we start moving... Which should be soon. I hope.
And a group of "regulars" just boarded, all NYU students. "Tony" even greeted them with, "I thought you never made it.". ;)
Facebook...it's a nice "alternate" place to go for meeting new folks who don't have places like HainesHisWay and FilmScoreMonthly, etc.  It's also fun to look up people from the past to see if they, too, are seeking similar connections.
Sad to say that many folks I'd like to connect with don't have accounts.
