Well, you've read the notes, the notes were early and caught the worm, and now it is time for you to post until the early cows come home.

For those who may have missed it yesterday (and it seems there were plenty, since we only had three orders):

And the new Kritzerland limited edition CD is Bernard Herrmann's A Christmas Carol and A Child Is Born.  These were both TV specials in the mid-1950s.  Both have either narration and/or dialogue and some sound effects - both have songs by Herrmann as well as wonderful underscore by him, as well.  The release is definitely archival in nature - A Child Is Born only came out on a promo 10" record, one of the most collectible of all time.  A Christmas Carol comes from acetates made at the time of the broadcast - many years ago I found a reel-to-reel tape made directly from those acetates and have just sat on it for years, until I finally unearthed it several months ago.  The mastering engineer has done an amazing job cleaning them up (especially A Child Is Born) and they sound very clear and nice, with the occasional anomaly.

The running time for both scores combined is over fifty minutes.  Given that it's our Christmas release and the archival nature of the recordings, we again are offering this at a special price of $15.98 (plus 3.75 shipping).  I'm not officially announcing this for another week - so you hainsies/kimlets have a week jump on everyone else (and remember, Laurette completely sold out in less than four days).  Payment the usual way via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  Be sure to put the title of the CD in the paypal invoice.

Song lyric quotes?

Okay, I'll start out.

"The shadow of your smile, when you are gone...."

From the late, great Paul Francis Webster.

Is that the sort of thing you had in mind, or did you want the full lyric?

Of course, there's also:

We saw GHOST TOWN yesterday afternoon.

A very funny (and sometimes touching) movie.  It's like an updated version of TOPPER.

Ricky Gervais is terrific.  Did you see him on the Emmy Awards?

He was the best thing on the show.

Hopefully, he'll host the Oscars this coming year.

Good morning, all! I have a reading of a new musical STAGECOACH MARY to attend this afternoon at 12:15.  Before then, I've a few errands to run, inclluding a stop at the pharmacist, and then my walk down to the reading.

I think the medley from the STUDENT PRINCE has finally been approved, so that's one more job to add to the work table. I had some work lined up with a chorus in Houston but I beieve the hurricane has kiboshed it for the time being. If only my two cabaret artistes would send some of the money they owe me! I hate to harp on money in so many posts, but I am sick of being poor because the folk who owe me mney - whether it's for a job or from a property closing - can't deliver within a reasonable deadline. I certainly met my deadlines for them.

The bus ride back up to NYC wasn't too bad.  I don't think I really slept at all, but I know there were a couple of times when I opened my eyes and realized that we were anywhere from 30-60 miles from the last place I remember.  I had though the bus was supposed to stop in DC for a pick-up, but instead it made a stop just past Fredericksburg, then Baltimore, and I think some totally random place in between.  -To pick up more "cousins".  ???

We would have been on time - 7:00-ish - had it not been for the construction on the Delaware Memorial Bridge and a small accident scene before the Holland Tunnel.  However, I was on the subway back uptown by 8:00, so, still, not too bad.

*I had forgotten how different and stunning the views are when you enter Manhattan from the Holland Tunnel.  Of course, it's a much different skyline without the Twin Towers there, but, even so, looking at the morning sun hit the windows and walls of the various buildings in Lower Manhattan, well... -It's sort of making me want to head back down there some morning soon, and take some pictures.  ;)

TOD:
I can still recall my last affair
He was smart, he was rich, he went everywhere
Well, he did until he went to the chair
They ain't done right by our Nell

Life is very far from easy for a woman nowadays
What with buying stocks in Woolworths and shopping at Cartier's
With with eating only pot cheese for fear of becoming stout
What with keeping her children in nights
And keeping her husband out
What with paying calls and giving balls and living beyond her means
What with portrait sittings and girdle fittings and christening submarines
Add to that a Latin boyfriend she keeps in a private nest
No wonder now and then a lady needs a rest

Yay, Cole Porter!

I believe that Skip will also be attending that STAGECOACH MARY presentation at the NAMT festival at 12:15.   The presentation is supposed to run about 45 minutes, I think.

(DR Julie may be there as well; I think she's seeing just about all of the NAMT presentations this year.)

OK...

I've already unpacked my luggage and put away my (freshly-cleaned) clothes, and I'm in the midst of finishing my breakfast of oatmeal and a cup of green tea.  I don't start work/playing until 1:00, so I'm trying to figure out if it would be safe for me to nap for about an hour or so.  -Or if I should spend the next couple of hours just taking care of things around the apartment, and running some errands.  I'm done at 6:00pm today, so I can always head back here - instead of to Birdland - and get a good night's sleep.  -Especially since I start at 9:30 tomorrow morning.  Hmm...

The paperback copy of Judith Jones' autobiography, The Tenth Muse, finally arrived Saturday, after being on preorder for what seemed forever.  Jones is the editor who realized that Julia Child should be published as is, and not dumbed down the way the male editors wanted.

First two paragraphs, enough to tell me this is going to be a fun read:

Quote
When my mother was well into her nineties, she announced that she had an important question for me and wanted an honest answer.  I steeled myself for something weighty, perhaps about whether I believed in heaven and hell.
Then she looked at me and asked: "Tell me, Judith, do you really like garlic?"  I couldn't lie.  Yes, I admitted, I adored garlic.  She looked so crestfallen at that moment that I was shre she felt a sense of finality about the wayward path her younger daughter had taken.

Now that's the way to start a book!  It's not a long read - the autobiography itself runs under two hundred pages, with maybe eighty more of favorite recipes.  But in just the first few pages, something that has been bothering me for a while has been underlined yet again.

Where the frickety-frack did this myth that daughters learn to cook from their mothers come from?

Julia Child didn't learn to cook from her mother.  Her family had servants.  She had no idea about how to cook until she landed Paul and in France.  M. F. K. Fisher's family had servants.  Irma Rombauer's family of course had servants, being of the upper crust of St. Louis.  And now, here's Judith Jones, whose father was a lawyer but not well-to-do, living in an apartment in NYC, and they've got a cook!

Heck, my own grandmother's family had servants, back when my great-grandfather was Sheriff of Napa County.  Grandma learned the basics of cooking from the family cooks (and a good thing, too, because Grandpa had no money and couldn't afford to hire help until much later, by which time having servants was considered something only the rich folk did, what with the Depression and all.)

All right, Laura Wilder learned to cook because her Ma taught her, but once you get away from the frontier mentality, and closer to the turn of the century, having hired help was not that unusual.  Our own esteemed BK has the Evil Eye on weekends - if she could cook, maybe we wouldn't have to worry as much about his eating habits!  (Come to think of it, BK, there are people who will cook a week's worth of healthy meals, and deliver them to your house, for a reasonable fee, which is a modern spin on hiring a cook - they just happen to work for several clients, rather than a single household.)

My point is that part of why so many families seem dependent upon Lean Cuisine and Healthy Choice and all this other cr@% crud that pretends to be good food but is really no better than eating someone else's leftovers, is that the people who were supposedly learning how to cook from their mothers have not done so, mainly because their mothers never learned to cook, either!  And, if they don't learn how to enjoy cooking from Mommy, or from anyone else, then the odds are they're never going to learn on their own!

(end rant)

No she was redecorating Ed Begley's house....and she wanted it a bit less Texas!  Her assistant played by Miss Mary Wickes stood around a lot smiling and shaking her head at her boss' wacky antics.

I agree with what DR Jose and other DRs have said about jogging vs walking. And about eating little meals throughout the day (vs one meal of the day).

It literally made me cringe when i read that after the chicken soup anyone would even think of not eating again for the rest of the day.

Although i wonder if walking and eating a bunch of little meals would have the same effect on someone who doesn't really have much more weight to lose. I do think it sounds a lot healthier.

I have a question for DR jose (or anyone else) re: kids and hospitals.

When my aunt was in the hospital (i guess my niece was only 1) we were wondering whether it was okay to bring her (since there are so many germs). I remember seeing a lot of kids walking around the halls visiting.

But I spoke with a nurse who worked there and she said she would never ever bring a child to a hospital to visit a patient (unless it was to the nursery).

I was reading about DR jose's whole family with all the kids going to visit and  i was just wondering if it was a concern. Or was that nurse just being overly cautious.

Since so many people here keep mentioning facebook and since my sister-in-law is a member and i wanted to join because of her, i signed up today.

And there were already 2 people set up who had wanted to be my friends. one is my uncle. But the other i don't know. It is very odd that there would be people waiting!

Btw, if anyone wants to be my friend find me (since i have no idea how this works or if i'll even find my sister-in-law).

Jennifer, one reason for not bringing a child to a hospital has nothing to do with germs.  Children can find seeing a relative ill very disturbing.  Heck, I know adults who can't stand going to hospitals to visit people, for that exact reason.

Nurseries, being filled with newborn life, are very different.  And, of course, no one expects the patients there to be bursting with conversation.

I'm back from my adventures in midtown. My friend Curtis is certainly a wonderful composer; I like his music very much. I thought the cast, which included Lauren Kennedy, Nick Wyman, and Jose Llana, and the band were wonderful.  It would have been nice to see Brad Haak, the musical director, after, but it was quite a crush of people. Besides the wonderful composer Skip  Kennon, it was nice to see my friends Richard Norton, Mark Robinson, Stephanie Rhodes of the 42nd Street Moon Company in San Francisco, our E&T DR Julie, and Jim Morgan. I had several friends besides Curtis and tom with this show doing presentations today and tomorrow and I wish them all well.

Now, I have to schlep my laundry down the street since the ass who's wife left him because he beat her up once too often - there's a story here - is taking up the laundry room this afternoon, may he rot in hell. He's an ugly man.

Actually, depending on what's going around, they'll keep kids under 12 from visiting.  Other times, anyone is allowed (at least at the hospitals here).

DR Jennifer, interesting question.  DR td, was your mother a nurse in a hospital?

My friend who was recently in the hospital enjoyed a few visits from her young grandson.  My guess is visits like these help the patient to recover sooner.  I think the bigger concern is if the child, or any visitor, carries germs in with them.  You wouldn't visit a patient with a child if the patient were contagious.

I believe most hospitals have sinks for hand washing as you enter, and leave the room.

I held back about twenty copies of Laurette - I always do this in case of shipments gone awry or emergencies.  Because I know so few here actually ordered it, I will sell ten of the twenty to anyone here who'd like to still get one - as I've said, it's already a collector's item, having sold out before it even shipped.  Nobody will be getting it for the published price of $15.98 (plus 3.75 shipping) - so, if you missed out this is the last chance to get it at the original price - I might even suggest getting a second one to hold onto and eventually either use for trading or to sell on eBay.

When I fall in love
It will be forever
Or I'll never fall in love
In a restless world like this is
Love is ended before it's begun
And too many moonlight kisses
Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun

When I give my heart
It will be completely
Or I'll never give my heart
And the moment I can feel that
You feel that way, too
Is when I fall in love with you.

And I lost my way

And it seemed to say
There you go
There you go...

Maybe I should have saved those leftover dreams
Funny, but here's that rainy day
Here's that rainy day they told me about
And I laughed at the thought that it might turn out
That way

Where is that worn out wish that I threw aside
After it brought my love so near
Funny how love becomes a cold rainy day
Funny - that rainy day is here.

It's very clear, our love is here to stay.
Not for a year, but ever and a day.
The radio and the telephone and the movies that we know
May just be passing fancies and in time may go.

But oh, my dear, our love is here to stay.
Together we're going a long, long way.
In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble --
They're only made of clay
But our love is here to stay.

And ice like vinyl
On the streets
Cold as silver
White as sheets
Rain like strings
And changing things
Like leaves.

I remember leaves
Green as spearmint
Crisp as paper.
I remember trees
Bare as coat racks
Spread like broken umbrellas.

And parks and bridges,
Ponds and zoos,
Ruddy faces,
Muddy shoes,
Light and noise and
Bees and boys
And days.

I remember days,
Or at least I try.
But as years go by
They're sort of haze,
And the bluest ink
Isn't really sky
And at times I think
I would gladly die
For a day of sky.

Oh, there's nothin' halfway about the Iowa way to treat you
When we treat you which we may not do at all
There's an Iowa kind of special chip on the shoulder attitude
We've never been without that we recall.
We can be cold as our falling thermometers in December
If you ask about our weather in July
And we're so by God stubborn we could stand touchin' noses for a week at time
And never see eye to eye
But what the heck, you're welcome
Join us at the picnic
You can eat your fill of all the food you bring yourself
You really ought to give Iowa a try.

You called me up, dead on your feet
Working late again

You said, nobody
Aah, nobody

Well your nobody called today
She hung up when I asked her name
Well, I wonder
Does she think she's being clever
You say, nobody's after you
The fact is what you say is true
But I can love you like nobody can
Even better

Sorry to hear about Mr. Blackwell - I always enjoyed seeing him on various opening nights I attended right up until a couple of months ago.

I'll always have a special place in my heart for Rudy Ray Moore, who directed the blaxploitation film Dolemite.  Back when we were previewing Nudie Musical around town, we did one preview in downtown San Diego where we showed with Dolemite.  We were literally the only white people in the theater and we were all quite nervous about being there and how they'd react to our film.  Well, they were a GREAT audience and after the show all those wonderful people could not have been nicer to us.  And Dolemite was fun.

Hey, look me over
Lend me an ear
Fresh out of clover
Mortgage up to here
But don't pass the plate, folks
Don't pass the cup
I figure whenever you're down and out
The only way is up

And I'll be up like a rosebud
High on the vine
Don't thumb your nose, but
But take a tip from mine
I'm a little bit short of the elbow room
But let me get me some
And look out world here I come.

Meredith Willson - The Music Man

I resemble that remark :)

Monday evening greetings!  I am back from Georgia after an 11-hour drive today with my mom, aunt, and sister.  My sister did all the driving and must be exhausted.  I know I am, and I was just the navigator.

But the trip was totally worthwhile and we made a lot of great memories.

And ice like vinyl
On the streets
Cold as silver
White as sheets
Rain like strings
And changing things
Like leaves.

I remember leaves
Green as spearmint
Crisp as paper.
I remember trees
Bare as coat racks
Spread like broken umbrellas.

And parks and bridges,
Ponds and zoos,
Ruddy faces,
Muddy shoes,
Light and noise and
Bees and boys
And days.

I remember days,
Or at least I try.
But as years go by
They're sort of haze,
And the bluest ink
Isn't really sky
And at times I think
I would gladly die
For a day of sky.

YES!  Very good call, TCB

Had you read on, you would have seen that I did indeed eat after the chicken soup - eggs and an English muffin, carrots, etc.

Yeah i read that part after.

What i was referring to was the intent not to eat any more. Not that you didn't.

AMAZING RACE SPOILERS from last night
*
*
*

TAR last night had a LOT of challenges - and New Zealand is beautiful.  And if the two divorcees didn't get to go home, I glad it was the other team of my non favorites.

I enjoyed TAR last night. Fine with who went home and enjoyed them all being bunched up and having to do challenges and really race each other

fiaufdsaufopdua fopdusa fo usafudsa98fd7sa98f79f79dsa7f9sa7f987df98oiufoidsa f ud9 joiufpaof u
I was also okay with the team who went home (they really did not seem to do anything right this episode). But i disagree about the bunching. I hate it and find it extremely unfair to the good teams. But constantly letting the bad teams catch up and then not making them do that many tasks it allows the bad teams to stay much longer than they should.
I will say i am sick of those divorcees witches. They do not seem nice at all. But had some luck. I like the tasks where it takes actual effort. So i really liked the stepping on kiwis vs building those bikes. Some people were good at each. and you really had to work at it.
Anybody have any favorites? I am amazed that ken and barbie keep finishing at the top. I really did not think they would be this good.

I thought the favorite lyric lines would be a much more popular topic.

I got lost in his arms
And I had to stay
It was dark in his arms
And I lost my way
From the dark came a voice
And it seemed to say
There you go
There you go...

The sublime Irving Berlin

It's a great topic, Bruce, and I hope you'll do it again.  I'm just out of practice.

I still think in lyrics, though!

"You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught"

I had a full evening of entertainment tonight. I began by finishing the DYNASTY box set. It was a pleasant walk down memory lane watching these episodes after so many years away from them. Nice to see folks like Grant Goodeve, Edward Winter, and Mark Richman making more than one visit to the show.

Of course, Grant Goodeve played Steven's lawyer who assisted him with the divorce from Sammie Jo and who later became his lover. Of course, the SECOND that Blake found out Steven wasn't celibate any more, he was on the phone to the lawyers wanted to remove Steven's son from such an UNHEALTHY environment. Seems like some folks' thinking hasn't changed much after all these years (this was made in 1983).

Following that, I watched last night's MAD MEN in HD which had been placed on HD Free On Demand already. This was the penultimate episode of the season, and it was another remarkable one. Some GREAT set-ups for the season finale next week. And I couldn't believe it was possible but we got even more secrets from the life of Don Draper/Dick Whitman. Amazing.

Then it was time to watch CHUCK and speed through commercials.

Very funny, very entertaining episode, probably the best episode of the season thus far. Loved the high school guy thinking Chuck was doing all of this macho stuff as Special Agent Carmichael.

HEROES is finally solidly on track now that we see what's happening - why folks seem to be shiufting back and forth between evil and good.

Now, that painting that Hero and Ando see at the end of the show that identifies the four villains they need to deal with. I couldn't tell (and I paused it and looked a long time) if the villain in the upper right hand corner was Peter or Sylar. (The other three were the Petrelli father, the flame guy, and the guy who gains strength from fear. Who was the fourth?)

Tomorrow I am on my own.  Edith is having a tooth pulled at 1:00 PM.  She wasn't worried about it until they called her today and asked if drills and cracking bones and teeth bothered her.  LOL, I can't believe they actually said that.  They said if it didn't bother her, she wouldn't have to be put under to have it removed.  After the phone call she suddenly got nervous about the whole thing... I'm sure it will be fine but I told her to take the whole day off and if she isn't feeling ok Wednesday morning to go ahead and stay home.

Anyway, I will be on my own for a day or so. I'm looking forward to it...for a day or so.  I get some things done that I wouldn't otherwise. I'm sure when she comes back I'll be more than ready for her to come back.

I've done more Dragnets - some very interesting episodes tonight.  I wish someone would release a proper Dragnet set - the negatives must exist somewhere - these episodes are off dupes of dupes of 16mm prints and they're horrible.  It would be so great to see this done correctly.  Surely the Jack Webb estate must have access to this material?

I'm thinking of going to bed early again - maybe not ten, but ten-thirty or eleven.  For now, I'm going to take a nice long hot shower.  Oh, for those keeping track, today I ate a ham sandwich and a turkey sandwich, both excellent.  Also had a little red potato salad with it.  Had a huge helping of tomato, cucumbers and onions in vinegar, some chocolate licorice, and a few other little things.  It seemed just right, filled me up, and was all very calorie-friendly.

When I got home a little before 11:00 tonight, I started transferring the files from my old Mac to my new Mac. I'm using Mac's "Migration Assistant" which transfers everything via a FireWire connection. Well, I thought it would only take a few minutes since it's being done via FIREWire, alas, it's going to take a couple of hours. Hopefully, it will be done by morning. So...

Pardon my brevity in some of my subsequent posts. I don't mind typing on my iPhone, but a lot of typing on my iPhone is a different story.

So, I called my father earlier tonight to see how things were going with my Mom. He said she's coming home tomorrow morning!  :) However...

My Dad continued, "So, guess what happened to me?". Well, he had another dizzy spell today. However, this time he went and had some family friends - one of whom is a nurse - drive him to his own doctor to have some tests done. After a couple of hours, it was determined that he was having(?) an irregular heartbeat. :-\ However, he was actually laughing about the situation since he and my mom will now be on the same medication. I laughed too.

Thankfully, my brother, Don, was able to drive back down to Richmond tonight to keep an eye on my Dad.  He'll also help with getting my Mom home from the hospital and getting her re-settled.

And, yes, I will definitely be heading home again next week.

I went to the callbacks and it all went well.  I sang fairly well...and sight-read the excerpts that we sang through.  I think I read okay, but I don't care if I get a named role or just ensemble.  All the ensemble members play characters throughout the whole show and that's always been fun.

So now, I wait. :)

There was a commercial a few years ago where the late Fred Astaire was used to sell vacuum cleaners. :P

Whew. I am transcribing an audio interview with a very colorful starlet from the 1940s. She mostly played show girls and bit parts, with just a handful of lead roles in some PRC films.

She will at one moment talk about working with Bob Hope and then all of a sudden she will go into rants about how the phone company and Bank of America are trying to put a hit on her and that her life is in danger or how she is the descendant of some famous king of Germany.

I truly hope that the stuff about her career is not all a figment of her imagination...but I am researching as much as I can to make sure that most of what she tells me (about the Hollywood part) is logical and most likey true.

On a side note, she is now in place that is giving her good mental health care. Poor thing. She is nearly 90 years old.

I am still awake.  This evening I tried a new slow cooker recipe for beef stroganoff.  It turned out very very well, and got rave reviews from DH Jed.  However, I am now dealing with a very upset stomach.  Since DH Jed is exhibiting no such signs, I'm guessing nothing was wrong with the food itself.  So either I ate too much and am now paying the price, or it was the consumption of red meat that did it.  Thinking back, I can't honestly remember the last time I consumed red meat.  My system is clearly not accustomed to it and is not responding well.  I've taken some Pepto and I hope I feel better soon.  Upset stomach is not pleasant while breastfeeding... :(
