Well, you've read the notes, the notes were like yesterday's mashed potatoes, and now it is time for you to post until the mashed cows come home.

Topic of the Day:  I've seen The Manhattan Transfer in concert seven times and all have been wonderful (to me, at least).  The Washington Center for the Performing Arts, here in Olympia, used to have a performer or group come for their annual CenterFest celebration fund raiser (now they just have a catered party for the money people) and I've seen some incredible performers put on great shows...Bernadette Peters, Gregory Hines (just a few months before he died) and Tony Bennett are the ones that I can think of right now.  Another performer who performed at the WCPA (but not for CenterFest) was Dianne Reeves.  She was incredible!  I LOVED Patti LuPone's concert that I saw in Seattle.  Fantastic! ;D

I don't think that I could pick a single performer/performance as "the best," though.

Good morning, all! I'm moving about slowly ths morning and listening to the demo CD of YANK!, which I saw at Brooklyn's Gallery players this year. The show's got an option and I wish the writers well with it.

I'd like to get most of the STUDENT PRINCE medley finished today, and my walk at 11 will be up to physical therapy. I'm hoping this will be the week with the property closing. Keep your fingers crossed.

TOD:  Bette Midler, 1973, Cincinnati Music Hall, has to be the best live event I ever saw. She was in great form, the Harlettes were fantastic, Barry Manilow opened the second act with a group of his songs, and the band was cooking.  A close tie would be Cleo Laine and John Dankworth.

TOD - Bette Midler is also my choice - her first concert tour when it played Masonic Auditorium in Detroit.  Seeing her perform live again is the only thing that would get me back to Las Vegas, ever.

Barbara Cook at the Metropolitan Opera was pretty spetacular, too, as was Stars on Ice, when Scott Hamilton made his farewell performance.

Really intriguing Mad Men Season Two finale.   I don't like Betty's decision....complicates a lot of things...and Peggy's decision to tell Pete the facts of life puts their relationship on a whole new level....particularly with Pete's situation with Trudy....

I think Joan is becoming one of my favorite all-time TV characters.....

And it was fun to see everyone at the after party out of their MM drag.

And now for something completely different... and a bit scary too... but not necessarily in a Halloween kind of way...

A couple of "video responses" to the announcement of the closing of Spring Awakening have been posted over on YouTube.  Some of them are quite "colorful".  This one in particular is one of the dooziest.

*She does blame the current administration for the closing of the show, so, my apologies if this is taken as a political statement.  ;)

**OH!  And, yes, she does have a potty-mouth, so keep your sound down real low if you're at work.  ;D

For DR CILLALIZ, re: the flu shot question.

I had mentioned that here it is required for people to wait after they get their flu shot. And you asked why.

I didn't realize that it wasn't mandatory everywhere. But the reason we are required to wait after getting a flu shot is in case we get a reaction. Apparently if you are going to get a reaction it is most common that it will happen in the first 15 minutes. So they make everyone wait just to make sure they did not have a reaction.

That was why i asked you if they had made you wait. And i think i asked how soon the reaction occured (i was curious). Hope that helps.

It seems like most people here like and dislike the same teams.  I also like nick and starr. Although they can both be very competitive and slightly rough around the edges (example nick hiding the rock clue under his jacket in last night's show and making people think he had not found it).  I mean i have no problem with people being competitive (it is for $1 million dollars). And i don't mind them not sharing. It's just sometimes they seem to go out of their way and go overboard (like he could have just put the rock under his jacket and left vs actually saying to people that he had not found the clue).

I also really dislike the divorcess. Wow they are getting a bad edit to make everyone find them so bitchy. At least they are not acting as stupid as they did the first few shows.

I don't know what to make of the frats. They have not impressed lately. And i actually was not upset to see the losing team go last night. They seemed like nice people. But they never did anything in the race. And i'm usually all about the competitive teams!

Mother/son. not sure. I don't love them. Don't hate them. The son seems quite on top of things. And they seem quite lovely. I'm just not sure. And i don't know what to make of the preview for next week with the son and starr!

The most confusing team for me is ken and tina. They are not that likeable. But they finish first almost every time. When they are doing well they work well together. But when they are having troubles they fight (see preview for next week). Looks like we will hear lots of yelling and fighting.

I'd say my fav team is nick and starr. But interestingly enough there are not really that many really competitive teams. Just really them and ken/tina!

I don't go to a lot of concerts or SOLO shows.....but many years ago I saw Liberace at Starlight Musicals, and I must say that man put on a SHOW!!!

And of all people, I enjoyed Sarah Brightman's concert show - it was part of a package - she looked great and sounded great and she had a real orchestra and backup singers and a big production.

Smaller shows.....seeing 4 GIRLS 4 with Rosemary Clooney, Helen O'Connell, Rose Marie, and Margaret Whiting was a lot of fun, as was a evening of music with The McGuire Sisters.

I was still the standard DVD reviewer for Disney last year when those tins came out. I requested them for review but didn't get them. I didn't get the True-Life adventures either. Since I only do Disney Blu-ray at this point, the issue is moot for me.

Best live concert I ever saw was Liza Minnelli. This was in the early to mid-80s prior to the taping of LIZA IN LONDON. I saw the same show here, and she was magnificent.

Her mother Judy Garland paid two visits to Charlotte for concerts: in 1961 prior to her Carnegie Hall triumph and in 1965 when her voice was at the beginning of its decline. Sad to say, it was the second one I saw. She tried hard, and apologized multiple times during the show for being in hoarse voice, but listening to her recordings in the mid to late 60s, her voice has that same rapsy quality in all of them so I don't think she was hoarse. I just think her best days were behind her.

And now DR MATTH reminds me that I saw Miss Judy Garland in Cincinnati in the mid 60's.....she was VERY VERY late, and her opening act, I think it was Alan King was not very good.....but it was fun to see her when she finally came on....it was an outdoor venue, like a baseball stadium or something....and this tiny little person came out.....and did a great show.

Judy also loved the audience.....

I have to say that of the handful of musical films I have on Blu-ray (CHICAGO, ENCHANTED, HAIRSPRAY, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2), DREAMGIRLS gets by far the most play. I guess it's because I loved the stage show so much.

I choreographed a production of DREAMGIRLS and I really love the music.  I guess my major problem with it - and it's with the book - EVERY step up the ladder anyone takes, every time someone gets what they want - it's because of a dirty deal or a personal betrayal or a lie.   But I guess that's Show Biz!

And then there was "Cabaret" winning 8 Oscars, but losing Best Picture to "The Godfather" (which won Picture, Actor and Screenplay).

I watched two TCM movies in my DVR cache yesterday afternoon.

The first was "Gabriel Over the White House" which struck me as quite socialist/propagandish.  Then I Googled it and learned that it was a William Randolph Hearst project filmed at the time Franklin D. Roosevelt was running for his first term as President.  It was intended to be a blueprint for FDR to follow.  Very unusual doctrine that Mr. Hearst had.  The president in the film, played by Walter Huston (I wouldn't call it a "superb" performance as others have in print, but it was true to the story), closes Congress and imposes martial law.  He also fires his cabinet which was, for the most part, "party-appointed" rather than "president-appointed", and then he goes about trying to make improvements (some of which FDR did follow very closely) and intimidating the rest of the world into paying the U.S. their WWI debts.  I don't see how the film could have ended any other way than it did.  Lots of alluding to Lincoln from time to time.  Hearst was a very odd man.  His "Cosmopolitan Pictures" unit at MGM produced the film.

The other film was much more fun, although it, too, had a political message at the end (it being a WWII comedy from 1952) -- a nice screen turn for Jack Benny and Ann Sheridan  ( never more beautiful) in "George Washington Slept Here" with Charles Coburn, Hattie McDaniel and Percy Kilbride.  The political message was Benny reading a "draft" of Washington's address to his troops in 1775 urging them to fight for right despite desperate odds.  This draft was found in an old boot that turned up during Kilbride's digging of a well.  ("Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House" seems to have borrowed much of the plotting six years later).  It's lots of fun and only stalls during the speechifying.

Best live shows/concerts I've seen:   "An Evening With Dame Edna" which left the muscles in my face sore for about a week; and "Mostly Sondheim", Barbara Cook's sublime 90-minute concert.

I couldn't believe it when "TrueBlood" ended last night.

That's because it seemed to have been on only abut 30 minutes.  Man that show goes by quickly.

I went by a little less quickly for me last night because I paused the show in progress to look more closely at Jason who looked very alluring in his post V-sex position in bed.

"George Washington Slept Here" is based on a Kaufman and Hart play about the invasion of celebrities to Bucks County and the movement that Cole Porter made fun of in the song "Farming." I don't remember liking the film much, and I don't believe I ever read th play.

I believe it was published in that Modern Library collection SIX PLAYS BY KAUFMAN & HART, which I once owned. Wish I still had it.

And now, I'm off to physical therapy. Gurjeet mentioned his wife last week, so I guess he's not free for our DR MBarnum. I guess I won't break his neck when hecomes to visit.

Does anyone here remember a 1989 NBC cop show called "Hardball" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5QttbO_2zQ)with John Ashton and Richard Tyson.  It aired only 17 episodes (or so).  My parents watched it and my mom recorded several episodes onto VHS and sent it to me in Italy.

I still have the tapes she sent and I spent Friday trying to get them onto DVD-R.  Surprisingly, I found five separate episodes in reasonably good condition.  I remember a sixth episode and it must be in a box somewhere.  The show was pretty good, all things considered, although an occasional piece of dialogue is howlingly trite, at least from the perspective of 2008 and many hundreds of cop shows since.

At any rate, the show "has" some interesting attributes.

Good Morning, once again...

Well, things are going a bit quicker here than I thought they would... Or there was actually less to do here than I thought... Or the perceived "mess" in my room wasn't really all that much of a mess... Or I'm just in complete denial.

Pick one. ;)

Wait a minute, hold the phone......the memory is working now.

Best RECENT concert/show I have seen:

Little Miss Dynamite.....Brenda Lee at the Pike Performing Arts Center last year.  If you like her, don't miss a chance to see her live.....she still rocks and has a great time with the audience.

AND - Mr John Astin doing an evening as Mr Edgar Allan Poe....he was GREAT!!!

OH!!  I loved John Astin's Edgar Allen Poe evening!  I worked on a show one semester at Johns Hopkins University where Mr. Astin is on the Acting Faculty.  A very nice man, and much beloved by his students.

"George Washington Slept Here" is based on a Kaufman and Hart play about the invasion of celebrities to Bucks County and the movement that Cole Porter made fun of in the song "Farming."

FARMING
Cole Porter

Here's a bit of news that's quite a shocker
Proving Mother Nature still has charm,
Quoting Mr. Cholly Knickerbocker,
"Get in the swim and buy a farm."
Acres of alfalfa, fields of clover
Suddenly enchant our top "Who's Who,"
So the moment all this row is over
What say if we go hay-seed too?
For

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion
Of our great celebrities of today.
Kit Cornell is shellin' peas,
Lady Mendl's climbin' trees,
Dear Mae West is at her best in the hay,
Stomping through the thickets,
Romping with the crickets,
Make's 'em feel more glamorous and more gay,
They tell me cows who are feeling milky
All give cream when they're milked by Wilkie,
Farming is so charming they all say.

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion
Of our great celebrities of today.
Monty Woolley, so I heard,
Has boll weevils in his beard,
Michael Strange has got the mange, will it stay?
Mussing up the clover,
Cussing when it's over,
Makes 'em feel more glamorous and more gay.
The natives think it's utterly utter
When Margie Hart start churning her butter,
Farming is so charming, they all say.

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion
Of our great celebrities of today.
Fannie Hurst is haulin' logs,
Fannie Brice is feedin' hogs,
Garbo-peep has led her sheep all astray,
Singing while their rakin',
Bringing home the bacon,
Makes 'em feel more glamorous and more gay.
Miss Elsa Maxwell, so the folks tattle,
Got well-goosed while de-horning her cattle,
Farming is so charming, they all say.

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion
Of our great celebrities of today.
Don't inquire of Georgie Raft
Why his cow has never calfed,
Georgie's bull is beautiful, but he's gay!
Seeing spring a-coming,
Being minus plumbing,
Make 'em feel informal and degage.
When Cliff Odets found a new tomater
He ploughed under the Group Theyater,
Farming is so charming, they all say.

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion
Of our great celebrites of today.
Steinbeck's growing Grapes of Wrath,
Guy Lombardo, rumor hath,
Toots his horn and all the corn starts to sway,
Racing like the dickens,
Chasing after chickens,
Makes 'em feel more glamorous and more gay,
Liz Whitney has, on her bin of manure, a
Clip designed by the Duke of Verdura,
Farming is so charming, they all say.

(Rejected lyrics include:)

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion
Of our great celebrites of today.
Digging in his fertile glen,
Goldwyn dug up Anna Sten,
Fred Astaire has raised a hare and its gray.
Clowning in their mittens,
Drowning extra kittens,
Makes 'em feel more glamorous and more gay.
Paul Whiteman, while he was puttin' up jelly,
Ate so much he recovered his belly,
Farming is so charming, they all say.

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion
Of our great celebrities of today.
Missus Henry Morganthau
Looks so chic behind a plow,
Mrs. Hearst is at her worst on a dray.
Tearing after possum,
Wearing just a blossom,
Makes 'em feel more glamorous and more gay,
Why, Orson Welles, that wonderful actor,
Has Del Rio driving a tractor.
Farming is so charming, they all say.

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion,
Of our great celebrities of today.
Just to keep her roosters keen,
Dietrich that great movie queen,
Lifts her leg and lays an egg, what a lay.
Going after rabbits,
Knowing all their habits,
Makes 'em feel more glamorous and more gay.
So Harpo Marx, in a moment of folly,
Had his barn repainted by Dali.
Farming is charming, they all say.

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion,
Of our great celebrities of today.
Lynn Fontanne is brandin' steer,
Sophie Tucker, so I hear,
Rides en masse upon an ass, hip-hooray.
Hoeing new potatoes,
Throwing all tomatoes,
Makes 'em feel more glamorous and more gay.
So Clifton Webb has parked his Ma, Mabel,
"Way Down East" in a broken-down stable,
Farming is so charming, they all say.

TOD:

Vladimir Horowitz
Elaine Stritch
Peggy Lee

Horowitz was so electrifying I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

Elaine Stritch is Elaine Stritch, and her show was so much more than I expected it to be.  I knew she'd be good, but the material itelf just blew me away.

Peggy Lee managed to hypnotize an entire audience into thinking that she was really moving, really hitting high notes.   She was that good, and the illusion was marvelous.  She snapped her fingers for "Fever," and you thought the whole place was going to move.  She sat or stood by the piano and sang her songs and mesmerized everyone in the process.

Favorite concerts:
Bruce Springsteen's BORN IN THE USA tour, playing at Three Rivers Stadium.  Open air, great show, four hours plus. . .

Barbara Cook at Carnegie Hall (IT'S BETTER WITH A BAND) - the first of five times I've seen Ms. Cook.  Carol Burnett bumped into my on my way to the rest room.  I can be heard applauding the opening bars of "I Never Meant to Hurt You" on the sublime cd.

Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner (RAW AT TOWN HALL) - everything came together that night, hmm. . .I wonder who was the man behind the curtain for this one?; Emily remembered me from CMU, Alice and her husband remembered me from the previous summer's TOMMY at Pittsburgh's CLO.  The fine after-party at Cafe Un Deux Trois.

Betty Buckley at Pittsburgh's Benedum Center - because, my former pastor Judy and I, became Betty Lynn's guests to the $500.00 a plate dinner/concert (just the concert, though) and Betty Lynn dedicated songs to us.  She also had us stay in her dressing room, before, during and after the show. . .this was my fourth time seeing her live.  (the concert coincided with the cd "Heart to Heart").

Betty Buckley at Westminster College - the first time I saw Betty Lynn in concert and befriended her afterwards in her makeshift dressing room.  The concert coincided, by mere days, with the release of her live at Carnegie Hall cd.  What a magical night it was. . .

DR DtM is correct....and Esquire magazine adds:

And if a man is particularly serious about formal convention, a white jacket should never be worn in the city “unless one has a napkin over his arm or a saxophone up to his lips” in the words of Esquire magazine.

TOD:

Bette Midler--sometime in the early 80's in a show that was a mish-mash of the set pieces she had done up to that point.  Before she had been Disneyfied and was still pretty bawdy and way campy, in great voice and shape and still getting along with her Harlettes.  A fun fun show and she couldn't stop doing enough to entertain the crowd.

Dave Matthews Band--summer of 2004, at the Tweeter Center in Camden NJ--great song set with a lot of jamming and riffing in strange little bits (like the Linus and Lucy Theme).  Also a terrific crowd and just enough of second-hand weed in the air to helped us pretend that we were stoned.

Don Rickles--Latin Casino in the late 70s--I was that close to peeing myself.  Also, praying that he would not come near our table.

The Nylons, at the Wiltern Theater.

Great concert of a capella work, very well staged.

Sad, what happened to the group later.  One retired early, one died (AIDS), and the other two have had a falling out.

Paolo Szot - the Emile in the current production of South Pacific - is a guest on Martha Stewart's show today.

Thanks for the info!  I went to set my DVR and the description read like this:

"Pumpkin Carving and Broadway's Paula Szot", (2008), Pumpkin-carving with Michael Natiello and Lisa Berberette. Also: Tony winner Paulo Szot ("South Pacific")....

I'd also like to add:
Jerry Herman Tribute at Carnegie Mellon University - featured Jason Graae, Paige O'Hara, Karen Morrow, Don Pippin and the man himself, Jerry Herman.  Part of the wonder of it all was that Jason and I had been communicating via email, snail mail and IM for years, now we finally met face to face.  Jason also introduced me individually to each of his stage partners.

Bette Midler - Syria Mosque, Pittsburgh - mere days after her Cleveland gig which was recorded and released as "Live at Last."  The same show, the same jokes, well, except for the remark that the venue looked like a Ramada Inn IN LEBANON!  "Pittsburgh, burgh of the pits."    Great performance and I'm happy that it was captured on disc.

I transferred an Rx (for which my insurance pays 100%) to Walgreens.

For being kind enough to transfer the Rx they give me a $25.00 gift card.

Over this last year or so that same Rx has been transferred to every store in town that gives away gift cards.

Then I put in the newly remastered DVD of THE BOYS IN THE BAND. Sharpness and color are erratic. Certainly it looks better than the old videotape I've been playing for decades, and it has 2.0 stereo sound. I find despite the somewhat dated theatrics that the dialog still has a fair amount of truth about it. I've certainly known examples of every one of those men in my life at one point or another.

Worst - Dionne Warwick!

Worst concert that immediately comes to mind:  the first time I saw Suzanne Vega.  The woman just stood there, still as a statue, eyes to the floor, for her entire set.   She didn't move left.  She didn't move right.  Her audience banter consisted of "...hi..." and "...good night..."

To be fair, she was so much better when I saw her again years later.

"Lucy Raises Chickens" -- Season 6

Ricky is at the kitchen table, flabbergasted at the amount of the monthly household bills. He wonders how the bills will get paid. Lucy suggests putting the bills on their lazy Susan, spin them around on it, and whatever bill stays on would be the bill that they would pay. As luck would have it, the Connecticut Light and Power Company wins. Ricky rejects the idea. He continues opening more bills and is shocked to find how high the grocery bill is. Now that the Mertzes have been visiting more often, and therefore more food is being consumed. Lucy brings up the furniture, which is still a sore spot with Ricky, and as he begins tearing in to Betty, she walks in with news that a friend of hers from the magazine House and Garden will be coming to the house to look around and will be including pics in a spread in the magazine if she likes what she sees.

In a seeming fit of desperation, Lucy suggests farming to pay the expenses. They ultimately decided to raise chickens, reasoning that they can make more profit--when the chickens no longer produce eggs, they can be sold as poultry. The share their idea with the Mertzes and decide to take out an ad in the paper for an experienced chicken farmer.

A few days later, Ricky enters with some responses to the ad. One in particular is from an elderly man who fought in World War I, was an entertainer. The response Ricky reads turns out to be from Fred, who, with Ehterl, is waiting outside for Ricky.

The Mertzes tell the Ricardos that they're interested in the job, explaining that Mrs. Trumbull's sister has agreed to move in and manage the building. The Mertzes won't be able to move in until their things arrive, so The Ricardos agree to allow the Mertzes to stay in the guest room upstairs.

Fred says that before they buy the little chicks, he has much to do to get the henhouse ready. About a week later, the girls come in from shopping and announce to Fred that he and Ethel are the proud parents of five hundred baby chicks. Fred orders the girls to get the chicks out the henhouse immediately or they would freeze to death. He also tells Lucy to call the hatcher and have him to send two brooders (incubators). Meanwhile the Mertzes get the baby chicks and Fred has Lucy to turn on the heat, and he and Ethel take the chicks to the den. Fred goes to check the furnace while the girls prepare to feed the baby chicks.

With the chicks warmed and fed, everyone goes to the kitchen for lunch. Little Ricky comes home and hears the chirping from the den. He goes inside. During lunch, Lucy and the Mertzes notice that the chirping has gotten louder. Little Ricky enters with a baby chick and Lucy asks if he remembered to close the den door. He says he doesn't remember, and everyone frantically tries shooing the chicks back into the den. Until they can all be accounted for, however, Lucy and the Mertzes forced turn up the heat in the entire house, creating an oversized sauna.

Soon enough, everyone's dressed as if it were the middle of July. Ricky comes home and asks what's going on. All but 65 have been found (quite a bit of them are under the clothes dryer). Lucy gets the idea to play mother chick to herd up the other chicks--just as Betty Ramsey and the crew from House & Garden magazine walk in. Lucy is devastated.

(A term not used in Australia for anything)

A worthless term, then?

What do you call the act of clearing tables in restaurants?

"clearing tables".

And the persons who do the clearing are called?

It would be the table waiter's job. Multi skilling!

And of course no tipping in this country unless the waiter has gone beyond the expected level of service.  Our pay structures do not incorporate tips.  No tipping in France either. (It is already built into the bill).

Oooh!.. I had a bad Dionne Warwick concert experience too. Well, she had a semi-bad night, but it was good for a laugh.

I did too!  The fault was not with her, but with the sound system:  even though seated in the second row from the stage Ms. Warwick's vocals were not well-heard.  (Maybe we can blame ex-Steeler Franco Harris who was sitting right in front of me).

Ah, I shall clear tables on Wednesday night then.  When folks are finished with their soups, salads and/or appetizers I shall pre-clear those tables.  Mulligan's does not have a clearboy, so servers are responsible for clearing their own tables.  When the tables are cleared and the guests have gone we shall turn those same tables.   ;)

Good Evening!

Still on the bus. We just had our Ten Minute(!!!!!!) break somewhere near the south end of the NJ Turnpike...

-I decided to grab a bite to eat at the Roy Rogers, and probably shouldn't have.

-On the bright(?) side, at least I was not left in the parking lot like one poor woman was. Apparently, she didn't realize that when her bus driver said "Ten Minutes!!!", he really meant it. Alas, no one on my bus, including myself and the driver, could really help her. I do hope she gets to her intended destination somehow or other.

It's the latest, it's the greatest,
Mashed Potato, ya, ya ,ya

A Mashed Potato started long time ago
With a guy named Sloppy Joe,
You'll find this dance is so cool to do,
Come on baby, gonna teach it to you.

Mashed Potato, feel it in your feet now,
Mashed Potato, come on get the beat now,
Baby, come on honey, come on baby.

And then they dance it through and through,
They look for records they can do it to,
They got a dance was outta sight,
Doin' the lion sleeps tonight.

DR Jennifer, I forgot to mention there have been drive-thru flu clinics, as amazing as that is.  I’m sure no one waits after those.

Here in the U.S., last year's flu shot is one they made us wait 15 minutes for.  This year, they said we didn't need to wait.

Maybe you got the shot we got last year.

When we saw her in the early 70's the audience was screaming for more.  Sadly she had to leave the stage for the headliner, Tony Bennett.  He was so bad we weren't the first to leave during the show, technically during one of his numerous encores NO ONE was asking for.

RE: concerts

When my sister and i were younger my uncle took us to a lot of concerts.  He is a huge music fan and went to a lot of the big concerts. And he usually got great seats. My sister and i would alternate going with him.

I can't remember how many concerts i went to. But 2 i remember were: Madonna and ZZ Top.

The latter was particularly funny because of the type of audience they had.

It was a while ago (maybe the early 90s?) and at the time they let people smoke at the concerts. People were smoking joints.  I had never in my life smelled that before. So it was quite an experience. But i could not for the life of me understand why the guards allowed people to do this.

My uncle told me to look at the audience (some quite scary motorcycle gang looking people) and said " THAT'S WHY!" :)

Ah, I must have missed that post, now it makes complete sense. No, they didn't have me wait and it didn't get red and hot for about a day. Redness and a little swelling are very common side effects. It's minor and goes away in about 2 days, which is what happened to me.

That was why i asked you if they had made you wait. And i think i asked how soon the reaction occured (i was curious). Hope that helps.

I didn't have to wait last year either

So, on the ride from the bus drop-off to the house, I asked my Dad how things were going.  Then my asking turned into an interrogation of sorts.  Alas, after some of the answers he gave me, it looks like I'm going to have to talk to the nurse in the morning to make sure BOTH my parents are properly following the dietary guidelines for their current conditions and medications.

*It looks like I'll be eating a lot of salad greens, kale and spinach over the next couple of days, or, at the very least, making sure neither of my parents have any of that stuff.  I think DR Ginny knows what I'm talking about out.  If my mother says, "Well, I'll just have a little salad.."...  OY!  OY!  OY!  OY!  OY!

*At least my Dad admitted that my Mom has never really used her blood glucose meter.  Well, she actually broke the one she had a couple of years ago, and then just kept telling my Dad, "Oh, I know I'm OK. I'm OK."  Well...  Again, I'll be having a good talk with the visiting nurse in the morning.  And something tells me I'll be accompanying my Dad when he goes for his follow-up doctor's visit on Wednesday.

Last night we danced the Hora at a wedding.  Since the temple keeps Kosher the entire meal was vegetarian :).  We ate delicious challah baked by the gentleman who baked the desserts.  He is a 4th generation Jewish baker, and oh my can he bake.  We had the best rugelach we have ever had.  I am not a fan of eclairs but my were these delicious, the best I have had.   Keith said his black & white cookie was excellent.  We both passed on the beautiful strawberry cream puffs.

Do they freeze well?  And does he ship?  ;)

Yes. We decided to disband our troop before we entered high school, so we spent our entire treasury that summer. We went to Big Surf, the Windmill Dinner Theater, and the Three Dog Night concert.

I listened to a good chunk of the William Friedkin commentary. Usually I hate his commentaries since he likes to describe what we're looking at. This seems to have been pieced together from comments made elsewhere, and it's actually much better than I expected.

There were three documentaries on the disc: 14 minutes about the writing and production of the play, 24 minutes on the production of the film, and 5 1/2 minutes paying tribute to the taboos it broke and its influence on folks like Tony Kushner. Peter White and Larry Luckinbill, the two surviving members of the original cast, also take part in all the featurettes.

And as for the Topic of the Day...

Two of the most fun concerts I've been to were at the Circa '21 Dinner Theatre in Rock Island, IL.  I worked there for about three months, and they would host guest artists on the dark nights.  While I was there, "1964" and "The Lettermen" came through.  The whole "1964" experience was truly an experience. Not only was the recreation quite uncanny, but even the audience was quite into the whole deal.  Lots of women - of all ages - screaming and cheering, and everyone was just having a good ole time.  "The Lettermen" were also fun - of course, I think only one of them was an original Lettermen - and I believe some of the vocals were tracked, but still...  Even though there was some inherent cheesiness in their arrangements and presentation, they put on a great show.  Their final encore: "MacArthur Park"!  :)

Other concerts...

"Tuck & Patti" at Wolf Trap.  They were the opening act for Spyro Gyra, however, they played for over an hour.  -And once Spyro Gyra started playing, my friends and I left... as did a bunch of other people.  I think that was right when Randy Brecker was being actively promoted as the leader and featured artist.  We stayed for the first two songs, but it was quite evident that all the 'improv' was a bit too planned and choreographed - albeit, well lit.

"Rare Silk" and Freddie Hubbard with Michel Petrucciani - My friends and I originally just planned to stay to see and hear Rare Silk, but we ended up staying through Freddie Hubbard's set too.  And we were glad we did!  To close out the show, Freddie Hubbard brought Rare Silk back out on stage for a performance of "Red Clay".  Rare Silk did the opening, then Freddie and his band "traded fours" - well more like 16's or 32's - for about 15 minutes before bringing Rare Silk back in to close it out.  A single, 25-minute encore!

"Bryn Terfel" earlier this year at Carnegie Hall.  The Love and Joy of Music personified.

And as for Ms. Warwick...  -And I think I mentioned this the last time we discussed concerts...

She was playing Wolf Trap.  Jenny Jones - when she was still a comedienne - was her opening act.  It became evident that Miss Jones was only supposed to do a half hour set before Dionne Warwick took the stage, however, Miss Jones kept going and going for another 15-20 minutes.  Then came a "pause".  A long "pause".  Then Dionne Warwick took the stage... In a sweatshirt, work out pants and sneakers.  -Her traveling clothes.

Apparently, the hold up was due to her luggage getting lost.  However, she did have her shoes - which she had her assistant bring out on stage to show the audience.  They were nice shoes.  Well, she started her set.  An hour later, she was done.  An hour!?!?!?!?

Some people thought she was breaking for an intermission, but since she had just sang "That's What Friends Are For" - and the string players were packing up - we could tell that she was not coming back on the stage.

One really weird feature of this concert was a series of three duets she sang.  With a tape.  -Well, her duet partner was on tape - as were the backing tracks.  Soooo not cool.  Even if her dress had arrived, you could tell that most of the audience felt a bit cheated.

*Oh, and I was sitting on the Lawn that night.  And it drizzled the whole time too. :-\

Back from the show, which went extremely well.  Yes, some silly missteps in the staging, but I covered all of the mistakes at the end of the evening.  The audience was great, and the boys really delivered the goods - the DVD should edit very well.  I was especially proud of Sean, as this has been a little tough for him, learning to match Kevin's energy and also finding the right camaraderie, but it all came together tonight.  The day was the usual trying to do everything in five hours sort of day, but we got through it and the tech people at the theater were very helpful.

I gotta tell you.  I just had four little mini Big Hunks - doesn't add up to one regular sized Big Hunk, so that's good.  I just needed a treat.  For my meal o' the day I had spaghetti with one meatball, a tiny salad, and about four medium pieces of garlic bread.  I didn't finish the spaghetti, though, nor the salad, but boy was that garlic bread good!
