Today is Halloween.  Oh yes.  So lots of things to do.

And it is Friday which is good.

Tonight is our semi-annual Seance at World of Wisdom.  We have about 20 people coming....in the flesh....and who knows how many spirits.....  Tonight is the night of the year when the veil between the physical and the spiritual worlds is the thinnest (the other is April 30) - so you can expect some surprises in addition to the little kids who want candy.

It has been decided. We will go to Long Island (Anthony's parents) for Thanksgiving, probably leaving sometime Wednesday the 26th or if we want to spend extra time, Tuesday evening the 25th.

We then have to return on Sunday November 30th because we begin our annual Volunteer work on Monday, December 1st.

Stephen J. Falat Basket Project  (http://www.actorsequity.org/NewsMedia/news2006/Dec18.FalatProject2006.asp)

If you're in New York City at that time and have some time to help, please let me know (send me a PM) and I'll give you more specific information. We need all the bodies we can muster to pack over 2,300 gift bags for people with AIDS. The bags go to many different ASOs (AIDS Service Organizations) to provide holiday gifts to people who have little or nothing.

We especially need people on Monday, December 1st. It's the day we set up the packing rooms and unload the deliveries so the more people we have helping the quicker we can unload the truck(s). It's a long day with lots of work but the work is worth it.

Good morning, all! I have another day at Toyland with edits on the Appendix numbers.  Last night I revised some of my critical notes to conform to decisions/questions made yesterday, and I need to write one more paragraph in the editorial method about courtesy accidentals and editorial choices vs original scores.

After that I may stop by physical therapy to see everyone's Halloween drag. Tonight I hope to watch something scary on DVD, although most of my favorite horror films are in storage on 107th Street. The most horrifying film I have here is A CHORUS LINE, but it's not quite right.

TOD:
DVD:  a couple of Netflix movies including the BBC sereis CRANFORD
CD:  Enchanted Soundtrack, Guy Haines, LAKME with Natalie Dessaye
  VCR:  cheap porn

It was interesting reading the emails on castrecl about being/not being on Kritzerland's mailing lists.  It may be the first time I've read people saying they're bothered about NOT being on someone's mass email list.  :)    Sounds like the people on that list would welcome all mass emails from Kritzerland, so it's good that BK put out the open invite to castrecl people to directly email him in order to get on the Kritzerland list.

I, too, would have no interest in HAPPY DAYS: THE MUSICAL. I was not a fan of the TV series. Yes, I know it was #1 for years, but I never warmed to it, and I certainly never understood the frenzy about Henry Winkler. My taste in comedy was more in the MTM factory productions.

Thanks to JRand58 and everybody else who offered suggestions or condolences yesterday on my ailing FAX machine.

I tried the suggestions but, unfortunately, none of them worked.

I'm not sure what I'll be watching this weekend.

If CHANGELING has gone into multiples, that's a definite.

I have a couple of titles in the new Budd Boetticher/Randolph Scott DVD set that I haven't watched yet, and I'm supposed to be getting a copy of QUO VADIS to review, but that might not arrive until next week.

I've also got several titles in the newest WARNER GANGSTER COLLECTION that I haven't seen.

We won't be watching anything tonight, at least in the home environment.

We are going to a Halloween-type party away from the madness of the Village and Chelsea. First, as a warm-up we will watch

It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_got_a_rock)

and then the program I'm looking forward to will close out the evening

The Paul Lynde Halloween Special (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Paul_Lynde_Halloween_Special)

from 1976. Margaret Hamilton makes an appearance as the Wicked Witch of the West!

Hooray!

We are in charge of bringing appropriately-themed cookies or cupcakes or the like. I will be off on my lunch hour to the Greenmarket to find such appetizing delicacies.

Happy All Hallow's Eve!

We are having our annual Halloween Bar-B-Q (sic) today at noon.  Costumes are encouraged and will be judged for some sort of prizes.  I made 10 lbs of potato salad (which weighs, actually, about 20 lbs) and it was all I could do to keep myself from devouring a pound of it last night.  This isn't a potluck!  The rest of the meal will be storebought burgers (meat/veggie/soy/turkey) and dogs (ditto) with lettuce, tomato, onions, buns and soft drinks or water.  Brownies will be the dessert. Volunteers to bake brownies were given the mix, but they had to supply their own eggs and water/oil.

I'll be glad when the workday is done.  I have never had more weekly programming stashed on my DVR cache than I have now.  I haven't even watched Sunday's "Desperate Housewives" yet!  Gadzooks, but I have a lot of TV to watch.

I found that peculiar also Jennifer that Ritchie was missing from most of hte show...

Oddly we still get Happy Days in reruns up here along with Andy Griffin... Pinky was a no-nonsense type of lady who Fonzie was apparently attracted to. She left but they remained good friends.

I have mixed opinions on the tv version of Happy Days. I liked the early years but I did not care for the show in the last couple years of its run. IT seemed to have lost its charm.

IMHO, Laverne and Shirley jumped the shark when they had Laverne move to California and Cindy Williams had left teh show.

We can't discuss the surge.  Too political.

How about insurgency?

Or resurgency?

I came back to the office to find the strangest of all Amazon packages.  In the first one I opened, there was the Truman Capote's A CHRISTMAS MEMORY DVD I mentioned the other day.  But it looks like a bootleg that you would buy at a flea market--plain see-through case with no artwork--just a plain printed label with a barcode.  The DVD is the same with a very generically printed label.  I take more time making labels on my home-made DVDs.  I'm not holding out much hope for the overall viewing quality of this DVD.

I was puzzled by the size of the other package--I was expecting it to hold just a CD but it was large enough for a calander.  I ordered what I thought was a special edition of Janelle Monae's METROPOLIS but it turned out to be an LP.  Two LPs actually--somehow I must have ordered two copies.  Oy!  It's no fun going senile...

I have a question about Happy Days the Musical:

Is it going to appear on Broadway?

It would be so typical if it did, but maybe a real show will take its place!

This DVD is in black-and-white, yes?  I'd read that ABC could not locate a color master print and that all they had was a black-and-white.  I could have sworn I had this in color on VHS tape at some point, but I may very well be mistaken.

No, I just checked.  The METROPOLIS Special Edition recording does say that it is an LP--that little detail somehow escaped my notice.  And because I had been doing a number of different orders to Amazon these past few weeks, I had been adding and dropping and re-adding this from my shopping cart.  It must have been already in there when I added it again.  D'oh!

Fortunately I didn't destroy the box when I opened it.  The two LPs will be easy to ship back (though I'll be out of the shipping cost however much that will come to be.)

A man was walking home alone late one foggy night when, from  behind him,  he heard:

BUMP...

BUMP...

BUMP...

Walking faster, he looked back and through the fog he made out the image of an upright casket banging its way down the middle of the street toward him.

BUMP...

BUMP...

BUMP...

Terrified, the man began running toward his home, the casket bouncing quickly behind him

FASTER...

FASTER...

BUMP...

BUMP...

BUMP...

He ran to his door, fumbled with his keys, opened the door, rushed in and slammed and locked the door behind him.

Nevetheless, the casket crashed through his door, with the lid of the casket clapping

Clappity-BUMP...

Clappity-BUMP...

Clappity-BUMP...

The terrified man rushed upstairs to the bathroom and locked himself in.  His heart was pounding; his head was reeling; his breathing was reduced to sobbing gasps.

With a loud CRASH the casket broke through the door.

It BUMPED and Clapped toward him.

The man screamed and reached for something........anything......but all he could grab was a bottle of cough syrup!

Desperate, he threw the cough syrup at the casket...

and, to his ultimate disbelief...

The coffin stopped!

I spent a majority of my afternoon watching NOELLE, a CHristmas-themed crisis of faith movie that was completely mediocre. Written, produced, directed, and starring David Wall and featuring his entire family: wife playing an unwed pregnant woman, daughter playing the title character, and another child or two in other roles along with other people named Wall in the credits. My gosh was it poorly put together. A bunch of plots barely held together by some thread about a Catholic church putting on a live nativity play.

Luckily, it was just the movie, no bonus features.

I've never actually seen a Kevin Smith film, but this one, more than DOGMA has piqued my interest.

Not a very popular proposition for folks who want to discourage Big Brother control of private enterprise.

It's passage would also cause a significant rise in some food costs, like eggs. The CA producers have already said they will abandon the state for Nevada - thus easing the cost of eggs in CA and adding a big cloud of carbon exhaust shipping the product across state lines.

The hens might be happier, but poor children will have poorer diets.

I just feel the cruelty to the animals is horrible & inhumane, not just for the chickens but for all the animals.  It seems there are plenty of successful “free range” egg producers, at least in Oregon.  I feel sad the current economic situation will be the reason for the defeat of this proposition.

I feel sad the current economic situation will be the reason for the defeat of this proposition.

It is not "the current economic situation" it is the on-going demands of the free market place - most consumers have more concern for their pocket book than for a hen's comfort.

Also consider, if CA passed Prop2, there would not be significantly fewer caged up hens - they would just be cooped-up somewhere out of reach of the CA activists - many probably in Mexico.

As we tighten the ropes on our domestic food producers, we encourage the import of more food from China - and we know how well that's worked out!

I think the current situation contributed to the Humane Society not raising enough funds to fight this.  The theory is, if one state passes the law, others will follow.

If I had more willpower I would avoid all eggs I don't know where they came from.  Alas I do not have that kind of strength.

Quote

...
The Humane Society of America, which is sponsoring Proposition 2, argues that if Californians pass it, other states will follow. As much as we support the decent treatment of animals, we doubt that passage of the measure would start a national trend. In fact, we fear that it would have an unintended consequence: Because it only regulates eggs produced in California and not eggs that are sold here, it would likely bolster the market for cheaper out-of-state eggs produced where farmers have no similar bans on cages.

According to a University of California Agricultural Issues Center report, cage-free eggs are about 20% more expensive to produce and cost about 25% more to buy. There is a growing demand, but it is still small -- about 5% of all eggs nationally are produced by cage-free hens. So California eggs would become more expensive, and many consumers would simply buy the cheaper eggs laid by hens living in cramped conditions in neighboring states or in Mexico. As a result, we fear the result of Proposition 2's passage would not be better treatment of hens but merely the export of their mistreatment. We recommend a no vote.

Pass Prop 2 and every Denny's and IHOP on the left coast will serve Mexican eggs.

I will say it again, Ben; God has a special place in heaven for people like you.

As if there weren't enough crazy people riding the bus already...just wait until tonight!

It is very nice when you have the private phone number of your vet.  We gave Sherlock 3 more Benadryl & will call the vet back in a couple of hours.  She may meet us tonight or in the morning, or just call in a prescription for prednisone.  If we are lucky he will begin to improve within the next two hours.  That doesn't seem like much to me, but the pharmacies close early here.

My new MSI Wind arrived today and I'm using it right now.  I love this little thing!  I'm still getting used to the keyboard. It's close to full size but not quite.  This will be perfect for travel, taking to work - etc. I could even take this to court very easily.  It's just too cool

TOD:
DVD:
This week, like BK, I watched a Paul Newman movie which I had never seen: POCKET MONEY co-starring Lee Marvin.  It's a meandering tale of Mexico which I found to be strange in a good way.
Again, like BK, I watched a movie featuring Joanna Pettet, the 1967 spy spoof CASINO ROYALE.  Though not cohesive, what with five directors, a film which I find vastly entertaining and star-studded to the max.  I'm especially fond of Pettet, Deborah Kerr, Orson Welles, Ursula Andress and David Niven.  I think that Terrence Cooper should have had a bigger career.

ITunes (CD):
WICKED - 5th Anniversary Edition
JEEPERS CREEPERS
A HAPPENING IN CENTRAL PARK - Barbra (for "Marty the Martian")
HUSH, HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE - OST

READING MATERIAL:
BY THE SWORD - F. Paul Wilson's latest Repaiman Jack novel
THE LEGS ARE THE LAST TO GO - Diahann Carroll's tell-all latest autobiography.

...And we're moving...

And I've decided to take out my laptop... And see just how much of the battery life I can drain from it.  However, "they" do suggest running the battery "amost-out" every now and then to help improve and properly recalibrate it.

Thankfully, this Bolt Bus is not sold out tonight, so I have an extra and open seat next to me.

Steve is currently at the IKEA at Potomac Mills making a few more purchases for his home environment.  -Which is a good thing, since I was worried that with the Friday afternoon rush hour traffic, he might have still been sitting somewhere on 95S even an hour after he dropped me off at the Metro station.

I've made the appropriate calls: Mom & Dad, brother Jay, brother Mike, and everyone is OK.  -Although, my parents only had one trick-or-treater.  They actually seemed surprised by that, but then once I reminded them that they're living in a "55 and older" community, well...  Maybe once the rest of the units fill up in their subdivision next year, the word will get out that there are a lot of grandfathers and grandmothers with lots of candy in that 'hood.  ;)

So, I bought a ticket for the 7:30 Bolt Bus (http://www.boltbus.com/) back to NYC. What happens between now and then is TBA/TBD.  ;)

...And I'm glad I didn't have a ticket for the 7:00 MegaBus that left right before us.  Apparently, they were oversold, and a few would-be-could-be passengers ended up flipping a coin - literally - to see who would get the remaining two seats on that bus.

As for the Friday Media Check....

CDs via iTunes/iPod/iPhone:
Marc Broussard - "Keep Coming Back"

Emil Gilels - I'm still working my way through his (incomplete) Beethoven Piano Sonata Cycle/Box.  Some truly amazing and inspring playing and interpretations.

Elians Elias - "Something for You: Eliane Elias Plays & Sings Bill Evans"

Girl Talk - "Feed the Animals" - There was a feature on NPR about this "Mash Up" artist on NPR earlier this week, and since the album is available as a free(?) download from illegalart.net (legally), well...  Yes, some of the rap lyrics get quite "adult" from time to time, but some of the "mash ups" - are quite clever.  The sampling, resampling and "reconfiguring" of classic and not-so-classic pop/rock tunes is quite skillfully handled.  -Who knew that a Roy Orbison tune could provide such a great "background"?  ;)  -And that's on one of the "clean" tracks.

Bernstein's "Mass" - Original (cast) recording.  *And a little birdie told me that they actually recorded the recent series of performances by the Baltimore Symphony and company for a possible commercial release on the BSO's own internet label.

The last neighborhood we lived in was nice and used to get about 300 plus trick or treaters (most of them children even).  Every once in a while, I'd recognize a kid who actually lived in the neighborhood, but most of the dear little scamps were trucked in from all over ( old pick-ups holding 10-20 kids).  Some even spoke English.  We gave out decent candy (although I usually stashed away a few of my favorites aside).  Although it was fun for the most part, I was glad when they'd be done for the night.  I will admit that I insisted they actually say, "Trick or Treat" and not just hold out their goodie bags and wait for me to simply give them candy.  Most of them were most polite.

Cilla, regarding the book on the Titanic, TITANIC'S LAST SECRETS, the basis for the book by Brad Matsen is the 2006 History Channel documentary, which I believe was called TITANIC LAST MOMENTS.  I believe the discoveries made by John Chatterton and Richie Kohler are extremely damaging to the owners of both the White Star Line, who owned the ship, and Harland and Woolf, who built it.  I am anxious to read the book.

Coincidentally, Brad Matsen lives just a few miles away from me on Vashon Island, just across Puget Sound.

Jane, how is Sherlock?

Now that I am caught up....

Thank you DRs Td, Cilla, George, Jose, TCB, Laura, & Kerry.

Sherlock received a steroid injection, prednisone pills & EXTREMELY expensive antibiotics.  He definitely needed to be seen tonight.  Hopefully the shot will speed things up & we will see improvement by tomorrow.  I can't take him hiking until the large blisters heal.

We will likely never know what caused the contact dermatitis.  If we had see the beginnings of it last night we could have prevented him from scratching & making it so bad.

We never expected it to continue swelling so much.  If it hadn't been a Friday I wouldn't have called the vet on her cell phone to see if she would be in tomorrow.  It's a good thing I did.  It is really nice she has told us to call on her cell phone after hours if we need her.:)

DR Jose, I meant to ask about the poison oak, and only mentioned the trails we were on.  If that is the cause we are going to be in big trouble since there is plenty of it on the trails around here.  I have never known a dog to have a problem with it.  Usually the dogs give it to the people, not suffer themselves.  My guess, it is something else.

I saw the documentary before I even knew there was a book.  I think the book is the most damaging to Harland and Woolf.  They have a source who was the archivist for Harland and Woolf and saw the documents etc that were kept secret. I won't tell you any more, but I think you'll find it fascinating and if you have seen the docmentary, it really helps to visualize the dives that are described in detail.

Did you read Chatterton and Kohler's other book SHADOW DIVERS?  It was really great.  I'm not really into scuba diving, but love history and when I read that I was fascinated.  I'm so glad they were the ones who found the bilge keel on the Titanic.

One of my former professor's dogs - Michael (sweet, sweet, Michael) - was highly "reactive" to poison oak and ivy.  Strangely - and thankfully - I never had a reaction to it.  Alas, I only found that out after I had taken Michael for a walk one time, and he started breaking out once we returned home.  "Oh, yeah.  We forgot to tell you to watch out for all the poison ivy along the trail."  :-\

However, his break outs only lasted for a few hours, and he never seemed too bothered by it.  I think it was just because he was receiving more attention... and treats.  ;)

Since I finished my work DVD this afternoon and got the review up before 6, I had all evening to watch what I pleased.

I started with the last of the Fox Charlie Chan movies - CASTLE IN THE DESERT. I had never seen this before, and I was so pleased to once again guess the identity of the murderer before it was revealed. So, I was able to outguess the last three in the Fox series.

The transfer looked very nice indeed.

There was a documentary on this disc dealing with the end of Charlie Chan at Fox. Nice to have this kind of wrap up the series, though it gives away the identity of some of the murderers in the films in the box set, so be warned not to watch this until you've finished the movies in the box if you don't want some of the denouements spoiled.

Well, there I was in LA in a nice hotel for two nights, and the first night the web didn't work, and the second night, HHW was hacked. So my first chance to try webtv didn't get me very far. I felt like Joan Crawford in that Night Gallery episode where she blows a bunch of cash on having the ability to have sight for one day---just in time for the NY blackout!

I was going to post a photo of HHW on my big webtv but the upload folder is full. Oh well...

There are Moms who will not appreciate the lollipops (kids have them in their mouths, trip and fall, and...well you get the picture).

No trick or treaters here. I think we just live too far away from the street and our house has no Halloween decorations to lure in the kiddies. So we went to a Halloween gathering at Oakton, where chili was brewing in a cauldron in the outdoor fireplace. (Oakton is a pre-Civil War estate.) They had the outdoor screen up and were watching HALLOWEEN. I brought a copy of one of the horrible explotation films I've cut: SLEEPAWAY CAMP III. We got a few minutes into it and had to leave, since Greg has to leave for work at 5AM tomorrow. We'll see it they are still my friends tomorrow. They liked knowing the fact that I had done all the screams, since I'm usually rather quiet.

Thanks for keeping track.  ;)

Well, the bus finally pulled into it's spot in front of the Sbarro's on 33rd Street and 7th Avenue a few minutes after midnight.  I was on the subway platform by 12:10.  The next A train uptown did not arrive until around 12:30.  Of course, being that it is Halloween, the cars were packed with revelers and non-revelers alike.  I managed to cram myself on the train with my luggage, and stepped through my front door at 1:02am.

I put my bags down, and then realized that the last time I had had any food was at lunch, so I headed up the street to the bodega for a Turkey & Swiss on a Roll.  -And for only $2.50!

So, I'm having my post-midnight snack, checking my email, reading and posting here on HHW and watching "Food Network Challenge: Haunted Gingerbread Houses".

And that's the story so far.
