Title: FIG NEWTON
Post by: bk on November 09, 2008, 01:00:15 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Newton-like, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they just ate an entire package of Fig Newtons and are currently vomiting on the ground.

I do not like rice pudding.

I do not like it in a cup
I do not like it with a pup
I do not like it in the hall
I do not like it, not at all.

Every marriage has it's rough spots.  Our rough spot is gummy and pastey and bleh.

(The fact that I don't like raisins doesn't help, of course.)

Good morning to all!  I'm at the airport, waiting for my flight to go to Pittsburgh.  I don't think I had the chance to tell you all that someone from my office is also going to Pittsburgh this morning.  Different airline but leaving just a few minutes before me.

The house was so lonely last night without Sheena there.  Poor baby, she really ddin't want to go with the people at the kennel.  She backed into me and sat down.  They had to pull her to make her go with them.

I guess she thought she was back at the pound.  I wish there was a way you could make them understand that it's for their own good.  She has her bed and her favorite toy--a squeekie toy horse.

I preprogramed the address of the hotel, the car rental place and Armstrongs into my GPS so I shouldn't have to many problems when I get the car.  I don't know why I'm so unnerved about driving up there.

I packed my ice scraper just in case I need it as well.  It's going to be cooolllllldddd!

Last night, I finished watching Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds.

I had watched part of the film earlier in the week, but had to put it aside because I needed sleep.

I have decided it is the most wretched film Steven Spielberg has ever directed.  Not that he's directed very many wretched films, but he's had a few.  The Lost World: Jurassic Park II comes to mind.

I think the reason WotW is so wretched is that it has a star cast in the lead role.  That star is Tom Cruise, and his having been cast in the lead throws the entire movie off.  Everything centers on Tom Cruise, who is not that good of an actor, imo.  And you know that he's going to survive the whole film, because during the first attack people are blowing up inches away from him, and he just gets ash all over him.  The film would have been much more believable if Spielberg had pulled a Marion Crane and blown up Cruise along with everyone else.  Then the film could have focused on his two kids, and how they surivive, and we all know how Spielberg is great at directing kids.  Or, if Spielberg had cast an unknown in the role, then it would have been more believable, because an unknown wouldn't have had people getting blown up inches away from him, they would have at the very closest been feet away.  But no, this is Tom Cruise, who has to survive an attack by inches, because how else can you justify his having an action figure made of him to sit on his office shelf next to where he plans to display his Oscar.

The rest of the film just went downhill from there.

At least I got one more film crossed off my list of films that we have in our collection that I haven't watched.

Sheena will be fine, Danise.  She just doesn't know it yet.  She doesn't yet know that there are other doggies there, and hopefully the people running the kennel will be letting her play with them.

Happy Sheena vibes

Good morning, all!  I stayed up to late watching the first disc of THE MONARCH OF THE GLEN, Season 2, and then I slept too late: the dog in the apartment above me barked from around 11:45 to 1 am. I like the tenant but I'm about ready to file a comlaint with the landlord.

Today, back to "Baby, It's Warm Outside," after a few notes on BABES IN TOYLAND, putting the laundry into the washers, and taking my walk.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Safe travel & burial vibes to our DR Danise! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Much colder this morning than it's been in several days, and the heat even set very low has clicked on several times this morning. In fact, I'm going to turn up the thermostat because the house feels chilly to me. Not going to warm up past the low 60s either, so the sun will be no help today.
I got up so early this morning that I had an hour to spare so I watched another HAWAII FIVE-O episode after reading the Sunday paper.
This was the comedy episode of the season (Hume Cronyn starred in the lighter episodes the last two seasons that I've reviewed), and this year Andy Griffith and Joyce Van Patten played con artists who mistakenly take a briefcase of the mob's money and try to stay two steps ahead of them so they can keep it.
I recall seeing a production of SILK STOCKINGS in Seattle back in the late 1950s or early 1960s.  It starred TV game show host Jan Murray, who couldn't sing, but was a last minute replacement for the show's original star, Don Ameche.
The play was certainly not a great show, but it was fun, as was the movie with Fred Astaire.
If you're going to do classic plays/musicals like SILK STOCKINGS, THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER, ARSENIC AND OLD LACE and the like, you should keep them set within their original time frame.  Otherwise, it makes no sense to do them at all.
I recall chatting with a director of a community theatre production of A THOUSAND CLOWNS, a play I'd directed some years before.  My son, David, was playing the kid in this staging.
This director was re-writing Herb Gardner's lines.  Claimed he always re-wrote a play when he directed it.
I wanted to strangle the guy.
How The West Was Won, as I even wrote in Kritzer Time, was one of the first epic roadshow films that I didn't love.  I saw it a few times in Cinerama, just because the scope of it was so huge and impressive, but I didn't respond to the film much and that was very unusual for me back in those days.  I can barely sit through it now, especially when the color is bland, courtesy of Warners.
When I saw it in Cinerama back when it first came out, I was blown away by the train robbery sequence.  I thought it was the most amazing action sequence I'd ever seen.
I still think it's pretty amazing, mainly because it's "real".  No cgi.
Ann- I am sorry that you had to call out the robber repair man yesterday - did he show you what was wrong?  Pur current repair man is  plumber who had placed an ad  in the local "PennySaver"  magazine.  He is a little old man , as round as he is tall.  He is the one that showed us what was wrong with the furnace and told us how to start it ourselves - he told us that we would be silly to spend the money on him for for such a simple fix - its nice there are still a few honest repair guys out there - I hope you can find one to check out your furnace.
Perhaps your local Craig's List might have suggestions?
Baked Rice Pudding -
Preheat oven to 325
In a large bowl combine  -
3 beaten eggs
2 cups milk
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp salt (The recipe calls for it, but I never use it)
Mix everything well
Add 2 cups COOKED rice, and 1/2 cup raisins.  (I always add more raisins because I love them)
Spray a baking dish, I use a 10x6 one, and gently pour the mixture evenly inside.
Bake at 325 for 30 minutes, then stir and sprinkle some ground nutmeg on top.  I sometimes sprinkle some cinnamon too.  Continue baking for another 30 minutes or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean.
Serve warm or cold.
mmmm...must go get some raisins soon
Vixmom - We will definitely be using a smaller local repairman next time, and getting a second opinion before we get the whole furnace replaced.  The man did not even show me what was wrong, he just said he "restarted" it and cleaned something off.  I wasn't able to watch him closely because I had a very hungry Toby who was screaming for food.  I didn't feel comfortable nursing him with the repair guy there, so I was trying to keep Toby calm and couldn't keep a close on on the guy. Ah well.
I love cream of potato soup!  Is it a good recipe?  Can you share it?
Ann- I am sorry that you had to call out the robber repair man yesterday - did he show you what was wrong?  Pur current repair man is  plumber who had placed an ad  in the local "PennySaver"  magazine.  He is a little old man , as round as he is tall.  He is the one that showed us what was wrong with the furnace and told us how to start it ourselves - he told us that we would be silly to spend the money on him for for such a simple fix - its nice there are still a few honest repair guys out there - I hope you can find one to check out your furnace.
Perhaps your local Craig's List might have suggestions?
As I was leaving the grocery, I had a phone call from DS Rob.  He and Mary Linda are on their way here for a visit.  The pot roast is simmering.
RE fig newtons - when Rob was about 4 years old he came home from summer vacation Bible school all excited about the "chocolate" cookies they'd had at snack time.  We spent quite a while in the cookie aisle of Kroger while he tried to identify them to me, to no avail.  The next time I saw the VBS teacher I asked her what kind of cookies she'd served.  They were, of course, fig newtons, which remain one of Rob's favorites to this day.
I like to let them get a little stale, so the cookie part is somewhat crunchy.  Same for candy corn and jelly beans.
I adore every SECOND of HOW THE WEST WAS WON. I think it's one of THE most entertaining westerns ever made, and I never tire of watching it. I've owned it in almost every home video incarnation including VHS, laserdisc, DVD, and now Blu-ray (which features stunning color and a razor sharp picture).
I decided on CSI: NY to watch while I ate lunch. Pretty good episode, and I was fooled by the identity of the murderers. I chose wrong, so it was a satisfying denouement.
I hope the seed planted in the episode to dispense with A.J. Buckley's role is just a red herring. He's lots of fun on the show.
I managed to watch 4 1/2 episodes of HAWAII FIVE-O this afternoon. My favorite episode of those I watched had quite a guest star list:
Patty Duke as an informant. Larry Kert as the man she marries during the show. Carol Lawrence as a newswoman/photographer and former girl friend of McGarrett. Lane Bradford as the mob boss.
I wonder if Larry and Carol talked about WEST SIDE STORY old times while shooting this episode?
BTW, Larry was quite gorgeous at this period in his life. He should have had a bigger career.
On another of today's episodes, Meg Foster and Richard Hatch played a young couple who stole babies to sell to a baby broker. Richard Anderson played the broker.
I still have 6 more episodes to go, and the guest star list for this season is already HUGE. In the episode I'm currently in the middle of, Monte Markham is the big name.
Larry Kert was a big fan of Al Jolson.  I never met him, but he was the person responsible for my one person play on Jolson getting performed at the Florida Studio Theater in Sarasota, which led to several subsequent stagings of my play.
Had he lived, he would have played the role.
THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING EVERYTHING!
LATIMES (http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-shrink9-2008nov09,0,4372443.story?page=1)
Steven Senne / Associated Press
A tape measure shows the depth of the indentation of a 16.3 ounce jar of Skippy peanut butter next to an 18 ounce jar of the same product.
Quote
On store shelves, stealthy shrinking of containers keeps prices from rising
Quantities of peanut butter, soap and other products are reduced to keep up with rising costs. Shoppers may not know they're getting less for their money.
By Jerry Hirsch
November 9, 2008
It is hard to spot what happened this year in the peanut butter aisles of local supermarkets.
But a careful look at the jars of Skippy on the shelves may reveal a surprise. The prices are about the same, but the jars are getting smaller.
They don't look different in size or shape. But recently, the jars developed a dimple in the bottom that slices the contents to 16.3 ounces from 18 ounces -- about 10% less peanut butter.
At international food giant Unilever, "we have chosen to reduce package sizes as one of our responses" to rising commodity and business expenses, said spokesman Dean Mastrojohn. He said the new smaller sizes are clearly marked on labels.
Unilever also changed the shape of its Breyers ice cream containers, reducing the contents to 1.5 quarts from 1.75 quarts. Competitor Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream did the same, shortening its carton.
In June, Kellogg Co. reduced the weight of many popular cereals -- including Cocoa Krispies, Corn Pops, Apple Jacks, Froot Loops and Honey Smacks -- an average of 2.4 ounces per box to offset rising grain and energy expenses.
The reduction wouldn't be obvious to shoppers walking down the cereal row. From the front, the size of the box remains the same; only the depth was reduced, Kellogg told The Times.
Dial shaved its soap bars to 4 ounces from 4.5 ounces but kept the size and look of its packaging the same, spokeswoman Natalie Violi said.
Dial didn't want to increase the price of its soap but needed to do something to maintain its profits because of the skyrocketing cost of tallow. Made from beef and chicken fat, tallow is one of the primary raw materials of bar soap. Its price has doubled over the last 18 months, in part because of increased demand for it as a component of biodiesel fuel, Violi said.
Consumers are confronting similar packaging changes in the toilet paper aisle.
In its promotional materials, the Quilted Northern brand likes to talk about its history of innovation. In the 1920s, it was among the first bath-tissue brands to be sterilized. Quilted Northern went "splinter-free" a decade later and upgraded to two layers in the 1960s.
This year's innovation was to shave half an inch off the width of its Ultra Plush product. Quilted Northern owner Georgia-Pacific said the savings allowed it to make the tissue three-ply instead of two, but it means consumers are getting fewer square inches of paper.
Shoppers on the candy aisle will find that the formerly 8-ounce Hershey's chocolate bar is now 6.8 ounces, a 15% reduction.
I love the "packages are clearly marked" bit; I'm sure we'll find:
NEW - IMPROVED -  SMALLER SIZE!
DIET SPECIAL - GET FEWER CALORIES FOR THE SAME PRICE!
I'm watching a Demy TV film from an autobiographical Colette story - so far, about ninety percent of it is narration, which is a little trying, nice as it is to hear Colette's words - and even though there are others in the cast, it's basically a one-woman show.  Pretty to look at, though.
I've just watched the blonde mistress - not a housewife - of some rock or country western star "Big Poppa" who claims to be a country singer. She worked with a coach, proved she couldn't match a pitch on the pian, was advised by the coach that she she had vocal problems and responded "what does she know? I'm a singer." Yeah, a really lousy stupid one!
I got a GREAT little PT Cruzer for my car.  A 2009 with under 200 miles!  I didn't know if I would like it or not but about half way to the hotel, I fell in love with it and now I wish I had one instead of Bonnie.  I love Bonnie but she is a gas hog.  (Say it isn't so!)
The GPS was the star of the show.  I preprogramed the sites I needed to get to before I left home and didn't have a bit of a problem finding my way around.  I'll confess there was some rather steep hills and some very winding curves but I just slowed down.  It the people behind me didn't like it then that was their problem.  I drove in what was a safe manner for myself.  I wasn't going to go around some of those curves at 50 mph not knowing what was on the other side.
Sadly I saw a poor deer on the side of one of the roads.  It broke my heart.
Once I got to the hotel area, I knew where I was and where things were.  I went to the cemetary.  It was a very hard thing to do.  Much harder then I thought it would be.  It just hurts that Mom and Dad are so far away and I can't go see them when I want to.
There were all kinds of leaves all over their headstone/plate (I don't know what you call it--it's not a headSTONE per say).  If I was nearby, I know I would go and clean it off at least once a month.
I didn't bury Bear today.  I will do that tomorrow on Mom's birthday.
I had to leave because it got to cold.  I'm doing ok with it for the most part.  I have plenty of sweaters and my coat but my pants/jeans are to thin (I guess because of getting them in Florida).  I did buy some thermals so I will put them on tomorrow.  I'm glad I brought the boots as well.
And speaking of pictures...
This is the curtain call from Le Damnation de Faust at The Met this past Friday.  My friend, Patrick, is just right of center, standing left of "Satan" (John Relyea in the red leather costume and hat).  He has on an orange and gold wig.
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e49/JoseSPiano/IMG_4627A.jpg)
*And of interest to some DRs... The people along the "top row" are the corps de ballet and acrobat/aerialists who are part of this production.  And, yes, the men take their bow clad only in their leather "evil spirit shorts".  -And if you look closely at the bottom row, you'll notice the male members of the Met Chorus also without their shirts on.  Something tells me that the Tenors and Basses logged a couple of hours in the gym over the past couple of weeks.  ;)
**And, yes, the clarity of the HD broadcast next weekend should provide a clearer eyeful.  ;D
I went over to Amoeba with a big bag full o' trade stuff - got one of the good guys and got GREAT credit.  Picked up the season two box set of Route 66 (I gather season one was transfered in widescreen for some totally incomprehensible reason, but am told this one is correct).  Looking forward to watching it.  Also picked up the new and for the first time complete soundtrack to Black Orpheus, a couple of Paul Williams early 70s CDs (imports) and a few other odds and ends including a region 2 I Married A Witch DVD.
And speaking of pictures...
This is the curtain call from Le Damnation de Faust at The Met this past Friday.  My friend, Patrick, is just right of center, standing left of "Satan" (John Relyea in the red leather costume and hat).  He has on an orange and gold wig.
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e49/JoseSPiano/IMG_4627A.jpg)
*And of interest to some DRs... The people along the "top row" are the corps de ballet and acrobat/aerialists who are part of this production.  And, yes, the men take their bow clad only in their leather "evil spirit shorts".  -And if you look closely at the bottom row, you'll notice the male members of the Met Chorus also without their shirts on.  Something tells me that the Tenors and Basses logged a couple of hours in the gym over the past couple of weeks.  ;)
**And, yes, the clarity of the HD broadcast next weekend should provide a clearer eyeful.  ;D
the men take their bow clad only in their leather "evil spirit shorts"
I got a GREAT little PT Cruzer for my car.  A 2009 with under 200 miles!  I didn't know if I would like it or not but about half way to the hotel, I fell in love with it and now I wish I had one instead of Bonnie.  I love Bonnie but she is a gas hog.  (Say it isn't so!)
The PT Cruiser (http://www.chrysler.com/en/2008/pt_cruiser/) is my dad's favorite fantasy car.  If he ever came into a lot of money, that's what he'd buy.  He loves the old style design.
I had four-hour rehearsals yesterday and today. :P But it's going well.  AND I have another line! ;) I was given a radio announcer's line during the song, "Mary Jane/Mary Lane," that I'll read from off-stage.  When we were rehearsing the number, I was following along in the music and kept forgetting to switch to the script for the line...only a couple of times, though.
I have always heard "tapioca for pudding."  A woman that I work with told me that in England they say (whatever) for pudding.  I think that it was just the way that Julie spoke and not specifically written that way.  The character of Millie is supposed to be from Kansas, you know.
A few days ago the left lens fell out of my glasses.  It looks as if I put it back in correctly but I'm sure my progressive lens is slightly off causing eye strain & difficulty focusing.
If the lens fell out, there is a fair chance the ear pieces may have been slightly bent; if the glasses do not sit perfectly level across the bridge of your nsoe, your vision will be blurry - check to see if one ear piece looks higher than rhe other.
Been there...often....
Just remember that the battery life is much(!) shorter than a regular cellphone - five to six hours of active use - but that's normal.  -And surfing the web really does drain the battery faster than just talking on the phone.  I always keep a spare charger/cord in my bag just in case.  In the meantime...
Enjoy!
*And, yes, syncing your iPhone can take a while. -Well, the backing up portion of the sync can take a while. It's best to do backups/syncs at night.  Just start reading some of the forums out there for helpful hints.  I really like The Unofficial Apple Weblog (http://www.tuaw.com/category/iphone/).
I don't synch every day - should I?  And are backups automatic when you plug into your computer?  I have to nuke about half the iTunes playlists - I didn't do it manually and it put 1300 songs on - and I don't think I'll be listening - I'm going to keep about 200 and that's it.
You don't need to sync every day.  Once a week should be fine.  -Or whenever you've added a bunch of new apps and songs, etc.
There is a setting for automatically backing up and syncing your iPhone when your connect your iPhone and/or when you open iTunes.  Just do some "digging" in the Preferences and Menus.
As for iTunes - I created a playlist called "iPhone Music".  I just drag and drop songs to and from there from time to time, and then just sync that Playlist to my iPhone.  This way it will not automatically attempt to sync my whole iTunes library - which would not fit on my iPhone anyway.
I do carry an extra USB and A/C adapter with me.  There are some after-market battery packs out there - which I may or may not purchase in the future.
I don't have a Blue Tooth earpiece.  I find those annoying, in general, so I'm not getting one.  -However, I do wish the headphones - which are speaker phone enabled - that came with the iPhone were of a better quality.  They're good, but they're still basically the cheap ones that come with the iPod.  -And they don't stay in my ears either.
bk - The charger is the "same" as the one for the iPod, so since you already have an iPod, you may already have a "spare".
*And, yes, I do think it's almost criminal that Apple charges $29.00 for the USB/charger set-up.
