Title: I'M GONNA WASH THE NOTES RIGHT OUT OF MY HAIR AND SEND THEM ON THEIR WAY

Well, you've read the notes, the notes are on their way, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're washing each other right now.

One thing I forgot to mention re South Pacific (probably a lot I forgot, actually) is there is NO cell phone announcement at all - no coy "unwrap your candies now" or "don't take pictures or record the show" - instead there's an insert in the program, and the ushers are constantly asking people to shut off all electronic devices.  The class of this production puts everything else on Broadway to shame.

bk - I didn't care for "My Girl Back Home" either, although, I don't mind it so much when it's placed in the second act during the "Thanksgiving Follies" sequence.  -And my only "real" question about this revival was just how much of the dialog setting up "My Girl Back Home" was original, and whether any of it had to be "reconstructed".

Otherwise, yes, the production is quite lump-in-the-throat worthy. -And I'm glad that Paulo Szot was (still) in tonight too.

... For Light in the Piazza the cellphone/candy announcement was done in Italian.

*And once "nice" thing about the Beaumont is that due to the configuration of the theatre complex, once they close the doors, it's hard to get a cellphone signal anyway.

Thanks, BK, for the lovely review of South Pacific.  I love the CD and would love to see the show in New York.  I've only seen a couple of high school productions.  They were adequate for high school, but they were still high school.

If I rememer correctly, all the My Girl Back Home dialogue had been cut from the original and was reinstated here.  But Logan and R&H were right to lose it and, as I said, it was the only thing I didn't care for - that said, it didn't ruin anything for me.

I just remember when I worked on the show at Arena Stage, the director placed "My Girl Back Home" in the second act - which, apparently, was also an "original" option.  Even the numbering of the song in the score reflected that.

I felt like I was starting to get a cold, but I've been taking Dimetapp and so far, I haven't gotten any symptoms, which is very important right now, being in a show.  It seems like more people in this cast have been getting sick than have in previous December shows. :-\ The guy playing Jimmy (the lead) did not sound good today, at all.  Hopefully, we'll all be better by Thursday, our preview...and actors' benefit. :D

So, I'm going to bed early.  Good night, all.

Sunday morning greetings!  Richard and I will be off to Cincinnati soon for church, then an Advent carol program at The Cathedral of Saint Peter in Chains - "great music in a great space."

The chick flick (Chocolat) gathering with my mom, sister, and niece was just what we needed.  Casual and low-key.  For dinner, I heated up all the Thanksgiving leftovers and enjoyed the meal far more than I had on Thursday.

BK - Your South Pacific report gave me the same chills that I had seeing the show in August with DH Richard and DR Elmore.  They will tell you that I was an emotional wreck at the end of each act (and several times in-between).

I love SOUTH PACIFIC.  If there is a production nearby, I try to see it....unless it's a high school production....seen TOO MANY of those.

I directed it once....about 85% of it worked.....what didn't was OUR fault.  You take the cast you get, you know.

But I love the show, and the Revival CD......

Thanks for the report.....and I hope to hear all about ROAD SHOW later today.

Hello, everyone.
I only have a minute before Marvelous Matt arrives to help me prepare for tomorrow's home inspection. One friend said that home inspectors feel they must find SOMETHING wrong or they haven't done their job. With that in mind, we shall leave a few very small things undone. After all, the buyers know that the house wasn't actually on the market yet--I was finishing up the Oven Fiasco and still doing little things.

The score for SOUTH PACIFIC is one of the greats, and in the right hands, the show can be great, too. But I have seen SO many deadly dull productions of SOUTH PACIFIC. And the Glenn Close movie remake was badly cast and left a sour taste in the mouth for the show as well.

Sorry I couldn't see this first class production at Lincoln Center.

Good morning, all! I'm in a hybernatorial mood: last night I was in bed by 9:00, so I missed a phone call from BK some time later inviting me to join him and Adam.  Would that I could have but I was in limbo. I hope to see both of them tonight at the band rehearsal.

I love this SOUTH PACIFIC production and I'm a believer in the reinstatement of "My Girl Back Home" for several reasons:
   1. it's one more reinforcement of the theme of young Americans uprooted and moved to far sections of an unfamiliar world to cope as best they can in an irrational battlefield and once there forced to face their limited knowledge learned in their smalltown upbringing. I think the song is better placed in Act One than Act Two because Cable's smarter in Act Two and knows more about being "carefully taught."
   2. It's a good bonding moment for Nellie and Cable because, with all of the military personnel in and out of that musical, she needs a moment to get closer to him since their stories interlock so completely.

I do hope, BK, that you got to see the "big band" approach to the Entr'Acte, one of my favorite moments.

Today, Frank Loesser et moi and around 6 pm I will walk down to Carroll Studios, styraight down West End Avenue to 55th Street.

I am SO ANGRY right now I could choke a horse, and would if only there were a horse in my room.  I got down to the fitness room a little earlier than I thought.  There was one guy in there.  On MY machine.  Okay.  All machines are created equal, so I got on the second machine.  The man on the first machine seemed to be going at exactly my pace that I normally do on that machine, and glancing over at his control panel I was correct in that assumption.  So, I start up my machine.  I take it up to about three on the speed meter to begin walking for the first thirty seconds before I notch it up and begin running.  At three, I'm going almost as fast as he is.  I can't believe it.  So, I notch it up to exactly where I notch the other machine - to 5.7.  Now, when the machine reaches 5.7 it's supposed to immediately change the speed to what you're actually doing - and when the other machine reaches 5.7 it immediately changes to MY jogging speed of about 8.2, which I then notch up to about 8.5 during the run.  Well, the second machine reaches 5.7 and DOESN'T change.  Not only does it not change but I KNOW I'm going at least two clicks faster than I've ever gone on the other machine - in other words I have to be going about 10.2.  I don't get it, but I go with it because it's so annoying to me.  I then realize that the calories and distance is going to be half or more of what I do on the other machine, and that was exactly right.  Keep in mind, that when I did 6.9 miles on the other machine (my highest) and burned 1050 calories, it took just under fifty minutes, and I was going much faster than I've ever gone on my real run.  Today, on machine two I did thirty-five minutes and the machine totals were 370 calories burned and 3.6 miles run.  Keep in mind, that even when I did the 6.9 miles, I was NEVER EVER winded.  EVER.  On this lovely sickening stupid machine I was winded for the first time since July, and after ten minutes.  I was sweating nine minutes into the run.  By twenty minutes I thought I was going to die.   And all the while, this unmitigated TURD next to me is doing MY pace on MY machine.  He finally quite after about thirty minutes, and when I could take no more, I got on MY machine and sure enough, I got it to the exact speed I was going on the other machine and it was indeed 10.1 or so on the speed meter.  Which means I would have done something like 6.5 miles in thirty-five minutes and would have burned off 1000 calories or so.  And now I'm up here so exhausted and annoyed I could choke a horse - or, better yet, choke the living life out of that A-HOLE who took MY machine.  I shall now begin work on my lighting and projection script.  Oh, well, I'm not running tomorrow so maybe it was good.

I've finished the lighting and projection script - faster than I thought.  I'm a little nauseous from the extreme exertion of that stupid second machine - I really should have stopped but I get ornery, which is pointless.

While I was away the squirrels ate a hole in the top of the bird house, the garage door broke and the fire alarm battery went into low battery alert mode.  Thanks to a phone call from my cat sitter, I was able to call and get the garage door fixed before we got home.  I replaced the batteries within minutes of arriving home and now it's time to go get a new bird feeder.  I may also get a new bird feeder or two

Yucky day here.
I've just finished a batch of Chex cookies - making them, not eating them.
Perhaps now I should gather up clothes and do a load or two of laundry.

Our handyman was here yesterday, so all of the seasonal decorations are up, inside and out.

Chex cookies?  I've had chex mix, but not cookies....will you share the recipe?
This is the recipe I used:
1 1/4 c. sugar
1 1/4 c. white corn syrup
1 1/4 c. peanut butter
1 tsp. vanilla
7 1/2 c. Rice or Corn Chex cereal
2 c. peanuts (no skins)

Bring to a boil, sugar and corn syrup. Add peanut butter and vanilla and stir. Pour hot mixture over Chex and peanuts and mix until all are coated - mix quickly, the peanut butter mixture cools fast.

Pour into a 9 x 13 greased pan and pat into corners. Cool, cut and enjoy.

Earlier this week, there was big bag of cookies in my mailbox at Borders, courtesy of one of my cafe customers, this particular type of Chex cookie was included, so I surfed the net to find the closest recipe. . .

Oh, I added 8 oz of shaved bittersweet chocolate to the Chex and peanuts before I stirred in the boiling peanut butter mixture.

Is any other THE AMAZING RACE fan here freaking out about the passport issue they showed on the preview for tonight's show. I have a very bad feeling it will happen to one of our favorites.

And i'm guessing that this issue is going to force that team out because one team definitely does not cross the finish line tonight (well if the info in my tv is to be believed). :(

Thanks TD. Sounds good.

Haven't seen the promos, I'm anxious to see what happens, but I am always suspicious of the way they edit the promos..

Yeah i am too. On the promo they show every team saying "i'm in trouble" to make it seem like it could be any team. I also thought that perhaps the passport situation (they said one team loses their passports and money) was just a momentary lapse.

HOWEVER that said, when i looked in my tv it says that on tonight's TAR one team has trouble on the subway (and the promo clearly shows ken and tina on the subway) AND one team cannot cross the finish line (i'm just putting 2 and 2 together that it would be because of them losing their passport).

Anyhow on the promo they show the frat boys doing their speed bump (which means they've made it far enough to do that).

So i'm just going on my gut saying it is most likely one of the 2 favorites who have the passport issues. :(

My copyist just sent me by pdf files the orchestra parts of the STUDENT PRINCE medley, which gets premiered next Sunday in Florida, and the page turbns are dreadful! Clarients are required in the middle of a phrase to stop playing and turn a page, the string section loses half their players during a noisy section while one player per stand has to trn a page.  Oy!

Why didn't he send me these two weeks ago so I could have stopped this madness? I just sent him a curt emai;l sdaying that sometimes having a fifth page instead of 4 is a vast improvement when it comes to sending out an orchestra part. I honestly thought he knew better.

How involved were the R & H Organization involved with this production. Sounds like they had their hand in everything (good thing)

bk - I didn't care for "My Girl Back Home" either, although, I don't mind it so much when it's placed in the second act during the "Thanksgiving Follies" sequence.

The song was in the film version and I am guessing from what you said above it is in the same place in the current revival. I am sure that R & H Organization have earlier version of the show in their archives.

Thankfully they did not include any of the other songs that were cut: Loneliness of Evening (Cinderella TV 1965), Will You Marry Me? (Used in Pipe Dream), or Suddenly Lucky whose music was used for Getting To Know You in The King and I

It appears that my parents' church has two(!) late-seating breaks built into the service.  -Which I find more than mildly amusing since the Sunday service begins at 11:15am.  Not 11:00, but 11:15, so there's already a built-in "we're running late" start time.  ;)

I second this.  Going off of the treadmills i have used, and I've used many at my gym and they all seem to agree with each other on speed and calorie count, I think your preferred machine might be the flawed one.  The speeds seem more accurate on the one you used to day, and i know the calories burned made more sense.  Treadmills as a rule don't burn calories at a particularly high rate, and to burn almost 1000 calories on a treadmill in such a short amount of time you'd have to be going a breakneck speed.

Also, did you look at the incline setting?  Was it the same on both machines?

I love this SOUTH PACIFIC production and I'm a believer in the reinstatement of "My Girl Back Home" for several reasons:
   1. it's one more reinforcement of the theme of young Americans uprooted and moved to far sections of an unfamiliar world to cope as best they can in an irrational battlefield and once there forced to face their limited knowledge learned in their smalltown upbringing. I think the song is better placed in Act One than Act Two because Cable's smarter in Act Two and knows more about being "carefully taught."
   2. It's a good bonding moment for Nellie and Cable because, with all of the military personnel in and out of that musical, she needs a moment to get closer to him since their stories interlock so completely.

...I guess the thing that's always bothered me about the song is the way the word "Tonkinese" is set.  It makes me giggle.

But I do agree that's it's nice to have a musical bonding moment between Nellie and Lt. Cable.

-Which is why a lot of people - myself included - place a towel over the display panel while they're running.  No two machines are alike, and it's always best to gauge your pace and exhaustion level on how you feel and not what you see.  To burn a 1000 calories in one workout, run session takes a LOT(!) of work and exertion.

*And does the machine really "catch-up" to you?  That sounds little suspect, unless you had selected some sort of program on the machine that increases and decreases your speed at certain intervals.

In any case... I hope you made it to the Public, and I hope you at least like Road Show.

I did take Miss Queen of the Dog Park down to see if any of our old friends still met on Sunday mornings at ten.

I'm very happy to report that they were there.  They knew right away that something was very wrong since I didn't have Bear with me and I had to tell them what happened.

We discussed getting that other dog as a pal for Sheena but everyone seems to think she is an only dog type--as long as she gets visits to the dog park.  She likes to play with the other dogs but then she wants to go home and get all of the attention/food/goodies/toys for herself.

I still wonder about leaving her home alone all day while I'm at work but maybe she really doesn't mind it.

I feel bad for that dog but I do think it is for the best in the long run.  Sigh.

I guess I was wrong.  Sorry to say, it must have been an accident or something.  Usually when you hear sirens around this time of year, the local fire station has Santa on a fire truck throwing candy to the kids.  I think that is very sweet of them to do.  I always make sure I run out and wave Hi to him.

So many people don't even bother--or don't even know.

I made some wonderful Turkey/Veggie soup.  Nothing to it.  Just put in the left over turkey I pulled off the bird, one package of frozen mixed veggies (corn, peas, sting beans, etc  No potatoes because they get mushy--No okra because that gets slimy), one can of mushrooms, one can of diced tomatoes, two sliced parsnips, two chopped onions, my left over celery from the stuffing, water and vola! Turkey soup!

I didn't add any seasoning because the turkey already had it on it.  All I'm going to add is some noodles before I serve it and I'll have Turkey/veggie/noodle soup for dinner!  It smells wonderful, even if I do say so myself.

Then I watched THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH. This is the full length version which is WAY too long for the story they're telling. Always an offbeat, quirky sort of movie, and ultimately, I find it very sad, an innocent alien falling from grace, undone by our hedonistic, materialistic  society. A very 70s message to be sure.

Criterion has ported over the commentary from the laserdisc that has Roeg and Bowie together and comments by Buck Henry added to the mix. It's an informative, somewhat chatty (Henry more than Roeg and Bowie) conversation.

I'll do the remaining bonus features tonight. There don't appear to be hours of them, so I should be in OK shape to watch DEXTER at 9.

First off, re machine - it's not brain surgery - the machine I normally use has to be right because I base it all on what speed I'm doing and how long it's taking me vis a vis what it takes in LA.  On today's machine, I was going more than double the speed I run in LA - it was absolutely crazy.  I don't get winded and I did today.  It was, in fact, a joke.  And if you run eight miles, I'm sorry, you burn 1000 calories.  Anyway, it doesn't matter - I don't run tomorrow and on Tuesday I will only use the machine I'm used to.

I didn't hate Road Show but I sure didn't love it.  I really don't like John Doyle or his concepts (he's an avowed Brecht and Grotowski disciple), and I think they hurt the show, which is, by the way, brown.  Michael Cerveris was really great, but the show is so dark and relentless I can't imagine that any of the original concept (a Hope and Crosby road picture) is left, although with a different director there might be more laughs.  The score is very derivative of every other Sondheim show, sometimes shockingly so (something very close to an Assassins tune, the water number from Anyone Can Whistle, even a Who's That Woman knockoff - almost like a parody of Sondheim at times).  There are some nice tunes and a LOT of lyrics.  Wasn't thrilled with Alexander Gemignani, but did like Bill Parry very much, as well as Alma Cuervo.

Quote
Acorn Watchers Wonder What Happened to Crop

The idea seemed too crazy to Rod Simmons, a measured, careful field botanist. Naturalists in Arlington County couldn't find any acorns. None. No hickory nuts, either. Then he went out to look for himself. He came up with nothing. Nothing crunched underfoot. Nothing hit him on the head.

Then calls started coming in about crazy squirrels. Starving, skinny squirrels eating garbage, inhaling bird feed, greedily demolishing pumpkins. Squirrels boldly scampering into the road. And a lot more calls about squirrel roadkill.

But Simmons really got spooked when he was teaching a class on identifying oak and hickory trees late last month. For 2 1/2 miles, Simmons and other naturalists hiked through Northern Virginia oak and hickory forests. They sifted through leaves on the ground, dug in the dirt and peered into the tree canopies. Nothing.

"I'm used to seeing so many acorns around and out in the field, it's something I just didn't believe," he said. "But this is not just not a good year for oaks. It's a zero year. There's zero production. I've never seen anything like this before."

"Once I started paying attention, I couldn't find any acorns anywhere. Not from white oaks, red oaks or black oaks, and this was supposed to be their big year," said Greg Zell, a naturalist at Long Branch Nature Center in Arlington. "We're talking zero. Not a single acorn. It's really bizarre."

Zell began to do some research. He found Internet discussion groups, including one on Topix called "No acorns this year," reporting the same thing from as far away as the Midwest up through New England and Nova Scotia. "We live in Glenwood Landing, N.Y., and don't have any acorns this year. Really weird," wrote one. "None in Kansas either! Curiouser and curiouser."

Rachel Tolman, a naturalist at Long Branch, smeared a big glop of peanut butter on one of the nature center's trees. She grabbed handfuls of store-bought hazelnuts and placed them atop boxes to attract the tiny, nocturnal flying squirrels that tend to mass in the oaks every winter. Within seconds, the squirrels dive-bombed in from nearby trees, legs outstretched like fist-size silvery-gray sky divers. "They're so much more willing to be seen this year," Tolman said. "It's because they're so hungry."

Tolman was the first naturalist to notice that there were no acorns or hickory nuts this year. Each fall, starting in September, she takes daily walks through the forest to collect nuts and acorns to feed the flying squirrels and other animals at the center through the winter. This year, she found nothing. "I'm hoping this is just some weird anomaly," she said.
Hazelnuts gone and peanut butter licked clean, the still-hungry flying squirrels scampered high into the tree canopy and chirped angrily for more.

Anyway, it doesn't matter - I don't run tomorrow and on Tuesday I will only use the machine I'm used to.

...And you could have gotten winded simply because your body is tired.

*And the belt/motor on the treadmill could also be due for servicing.

Nothing.

Greetings folks. We are back in Manhattan after a loverly Thanksgiving on Long Island. I pushed out vibes galore as we trained through Deer Park.

I will be busy tomorrow with volunteering. It's supposed to rain off and on all day though the temperature may get into the 50s. I just finished updating some things on the computer and we seem to be up and running OK.

We are going to elfyourself.com some time this week to play around with JibJab movies. Since we now have high speed it should be fun.

Oy, it's already December 1st tomorrow. Where did the time fly and I only hope my vacation will not speed by as quickly as the rest of the year.

Or maybe they are just spoiled because I give them corn and they empty the birdfeeder every day!   I have 4 or 5 squirrels who are normally out here. I threw them some corn and filled the feeder that's here today.   I was gone long enough that their food supply was just cut off.  There are a number of neighbors who put food out as well, so I'm sure they found some.  It's very cold and misty out right now..I may put some more corn out tonight.

It's almost time to just buy it in bulk .  It looks from the tracks last time it snowed that the deer have been looking for food too. They don't like it on the cob and will be here if I just put it in the yard.

I don't think ANY bailout money for ANY industry should go for ANY executive salary.

Unfortunately, if you want the company to re-group and become successful, you need real pros at the helm - and few real pros work cheap.

Same problem with dividends - if the Government restricts the company's ability to pay dividends, they restrict the company's ability to attract capital, and guarantee they'll be back for more bail-out funds.

If we placed a Value Added Tax on consumer goods (and then used those funds to pay for worker health and pension benefits) the American auto companies could better compete with foreign imports. (Remember, auto workers in most foreign countries get state supplied benefits, so their company costs are lower and they can undercut Detroit's prices.)

Not particularly.   It's a tough one.....but it's like the Grant Requests we used to get asking for seed money for a foundation or non-profit.....first request $100,000 - more than half of which would go to the Executive Director/Founder as salary.....

It's a free program that is supposed to convert your screenplay into various other formats (e.g. comic book, stage play, documentaries, etc.).  It also does scheduling and a lot of other nifty stuff.

I'm always hesitant to download stuff off of the internet, so I'd appreciate hearing if anybody's had any issues with this program.

All of our family travelers are safely home after our festive Thanksgiving weekend.  My cousin and his wife returned to Georgia yesterday, my sister and her husband drove to Michigan today and their daughter drove to Illinois.  They drove into the snow that Rob and Mary Linda drove out of, returning here from a quick trip Friday-Sunday to visit her family.  They're crashing here tonight before returning to Cincinnati tomorrow.

I learned this evening that the woman who hired me for my first professional librarian job, and groomed me to take her place when she retired, passed away last Tuesday at age 92.  She was a wonderful mentor to whom I will always be indebted for the start of my career and for bringing me to this community where I met my husband, raised our son, and developed many wonderful friendships (including DR Elmore).  RIP, Mrs. Brown.

Thank you, DRs JRand and Cillaliz.  I'd kind of been expecting the news about Mrs. Brown, especially when she didn't respond to the note I wrote her a couple of months ago about my impending retirement.  Thirty years ago, we were preparing for her retirement.

Good Evening!

Well, my bus back to NYC is scheduled to depart in seven and a half hours...

I have a small bit of packing to take care of before turning in, but, unlike my pre-trip preparations for when I headed down here last week, I do plan to get a couple of hours of sleep tonight.

We're planning on leaving here at 6:00am and should be at the pick-up place by 6:15am.  I want to make sure I actually make it on the bus.  Well, that there's a space on the bus for me, since there's always a chance of them over-selling the bus, and since we're coming off of a holiday weekend, well...

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend - or just a good weekend, in general, for those DRs who don't observe the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday.  I'll be checking back in the morning, and while I'm en route, but until then...

Goodnight.

Back from the band rehearsal.  We lost one performer, which caused us to lose another, since they were doing a duet - the two In The Heights people - just as well, it was too many ballads in their section.

Then I watched LAW & ORDER: SVU which was this week's episode repeated last night, based on DR td's recommendation.

I had NO IDEA DR td was going to be on the show (well, his doppleganger - Martin Mull)! Very good (and tragic) episode.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES had several predictable storylines. But I DID love the new Andrew storyline! Can't wait to see the next one.

Since we're talking about bailouts and wasting bailout money again, if anyone hasn't seen my youtube "AIG BAILOUT PARODY SONG"  (on which I got a majorly helpful assist with bringing the video elements together by Jose's roommate Jim):

We're doing the sound recording on a sequel tomorrow late morning, early afternoon.
