One thing I forgot to mention re South Pacific (probably a lot I forgot, actually) is there is NO cell phone announcement at all - no coy "unwrap your candies now" or "don't take pictures or record the show" - instead there's an insert in the program, and the ushers are constantly asking people to shut off all electronic devices. The class of this production puts everything else on Broadway to shame.
If I rememer correctly, all the My Girl Back Home dialogue had been cut from the original and was reinstated here. But Logan and R&H were right to lose it and, as I said, it was the only thing I didn't care for - that said, it didn't ruin anything for me.
I need to get to bed too.
And the word of the day is: PRELAPSARIAN!
Loved the report on SOUTH PACIFIC! Makes me want to go and see it!
Thanks, BK, for the lovely review of South Pacific. I love the CD and would love to see the show in New York. I've only seen a couple of high school productions. They were adequate for high school, but they were still high school.
I am SO ANGRY right now I could choke a horse, and would if only there were a horse in my room. I got down to the fitness room a little earlier than I thought. There was one guy in there. On MY machine. Okay. All machines are created equal, so I got on the second machine. The man on the first machine seemed to be going at exactly my pace that I normally do on that machine, and glancing over at his control panel I was correct in that assumption. So, I start up my machine. I take it up to about three on the speed meter to begin walking for the first thirty seconds before I notch it up and begin running. At three, I'm going almost as fast as he is. I can't believe it. So, I notch it up to exactly where I notch the other machine - to 5.7. Now, when the machine reaches 5.7 it's supposed to immediately change the speed to what you're actually doing - and when the other machine reaches 5.7 it immediately changes to MY jogging speed of about 8.2, which I then notch up to about 8.5 during the run. Well, the second machine reaches 5.7 and DOESN'T change. Not only does it not change but I KNOW I'm going at least two clicks faster than I've ever gone on the other machine - in other words I have to be going about 10.2. I don't get it, but I go with it because it's so annoying to me. I then realize that the calories and distance is going to be half or more of what I do on the other machine, and that was exactly right. Keep in mind, that when I did 6.9 miles on the other machine (my highest) and burned 1050 calories, it took just under fifty minutes, and I was going much faster than I've ever gone on my real run. Today, on machine two I did thirty-five minutes and the machine totals were 370 calories burned and 3.6 miles run. Keep in mind, that even when I did the 6.9 miles, I was NEVER EVER winded. EVER. On this lovely sickening stupid machine I was winded for the first time since July, and after ten minutes. I was sweating nine minutes into the run. By twenty minutes I thought I was going to die. And all the while, this unmitigated TURD next to me is doing MY pace on MY machine. He finally quite after about thirty minutes, and when I could take no more, I got on MY machine and sure enough, I got it to the exact speed I was going on the other machine and it was indeed 10.1 or so on the speed meter. Which means I would have done something like 6.5 miles in thirty-five minutes and would have burned off 1000 calories or so. And now I'm up here so exhausted and annoyed I could choke a horse - or, better yet, choke the living life out of that A-HOLE who took MY machine. I shall now begin work on my lighting and projection script. Oh, well, I'm not running tomorrow so maybe it was good.
Free for all day......
I watched the opening credits of HOW THE WEST WAS WON on Friday night.....one producer in the credits....ONE....for this huge movie.
Now every movie, no matter how small or crappy, has at least six Executive P, Producer, Associate P, Also P by..... Does it take that many more people or that much more money....or have billing requirements changed?

Poor baby!
:D
Yucky day here.
I've just finished a batch of Chex cookies - making them, not eating them.
Perhaps now I should gather up clothes and do a load or two of laundry.
Our handyman was here yesterday, so all of the seasonal decorations are up, inside and out.
This is the recipe I used:
Chex cookies? I've had chex mix, but not cookies....will you share the recipe?

1 1/4 c. sugar
1 1/4 c. white corn syrup
1 1/4 c. peanut butter
1 tsp. vanilla
7 1/2 c. Rice or Corn Chex cereal
2 c. peanuts (no skins)
Bring to a boil, sugar and corn syrup. Add peanut butter and vanilla and stir. Pour hot mixture over Chex and peanuts and mix until all are coated - mix quickly, the peanut butter mixture cools fast.
Pour into a 9 x 13 greased pan and pat into corners. Cool, cut and enjoy.
Earlier this week, there was big bag of cookies in my mailbox at Borders, courtesy of one of my cafe customers, this particular type of Chex cookie was included, so I surfed the net to find the closest recipe. . .
Oh, I added 8 oz of shaved bittersweet chocolate to the Chex and peanuts before I stirred in the boiling peanut butter mixture.
Is any other THE AMAZING RACE fan here freaking out about the passport issue they showed on the preview for tonight's show. I have a very bad feeling it will happen to one of our favorites.
And i'm guessing that this issue is going to force that team out because one team definitely does not cross the finish line tonight (well if the info in my tv is to be believed). :(

Haven't seen the promos, I'm anxious to see what happens, but I am always suspicious of the way they edit the promos..

bk - I didn't care for "My Girl Back Home" either, although, I don't mind it so much when it's placed in the second act during the "Thanksgiving Follies" sequence. -And my only "real" question about this revival was just how much of the dialog setting up "My Girl Back Home" was original, and whether any of it had to be "reconstructed".
Otherwise, yes, the production is quite lump-in-the-throat worthy. -And I'm glad that Paulo Szot was (still) in tonight too.
Is it Jim Stenborg? :)

BK - is it possible that the machine on which you are burning hundreds of caloris with little effort is actually the one that is broken and is over reporting your caloric loss>
It seems to me (based on the output of the machines I have been using at my gym ) that the machine you were using to day was probably giving you a truer reading ....
I love this SOUTH PACIFIC production and I'm a believer in the reinstatement of "My Girl Back Home" for several reasons:
1. it's one more reinforcement of the theme of young Americans uprooted and moved to far sections of an unfamiliar world to cope as best they can in an irrational battlefield and once there forced to face their limited knowledge learned in their smalltown upbringing. I think the song is better placed in Act One than Act Two because Cable's smarter in Act Two and knows more about being "carefully taught."
2. It's a good bonding moment for Nellie and Cable because, with all of the military personnel in and out of that musical, she needs a moment to get closer to him since their stories interlock so completely.

I second this. Going off of the treadmills i have used, and I've used many at my gym and they all seem to agree with each other on speed and calorie count, I think your preferred machine might be the flawed one. The speeds seem more accurate on the one you used to day, and i know the calories burned made more sense. Treadmills as a rule don't burn calories at a particularly high rate, and to burn almost 1000 calories on a treadmill in such a short amount of time you'd have to be going a breakneck speed.
Also, did you look at the incline setting? Was it the same on both machines?
Hi all!
Is it possible that my 4 day weekend is almost over and I still didn't get everything done that I planned on doing? Don't ya just HATE that?

While I was away the squirrels ate a hole in the top of the bird house...
Acorn Watchers Wonder What Happened to Crop
The idea seemed too crazy to Rod Simmons, a measured, careful field botanist. Naturalists in Arlington County couldn't find any acorns. None. No hickory nuts, either. Then he went out to look for himself. He came up with nothing. Nothing crunched underfoot. Nothing hit him on the head.
Then calls started coming in about crazy squirrels. Starving, skinny squirrels eating garbage, inhaling bird feed, greedily demolishing pumpkins. Squirrels boldly scampering into the road. And a lot more calls about squirrel roadkill.
But Simmons really got spooked when he was teaching a class on identifying oak and hickory trees late last month. For 2 1/2 miles, Simmons and other naturalists hiked through Northern Virginia oak and hickory forests. They sifted through leaves on the ground, dug in the dirt and peered into the tree canopies. Nothing.
"I'm used to seeing so many acorns around and out in the field, it's something I just didn't believe," he said. "But this is not just not a good year for oaks. It's a zero year. There's zero production. I've never seen anything like this before."
…
"Once I started paying attention, I couldn't find any acorns anywhere. Not from white oaks, red oaks or black oaks, and this was supposed to be their big year," said Greg Zell, a naturalist at Long Branch Nature Center in Arlington. "We're talking zero. Not a single acorn. It's really bizarre."
Zell began to do some research. He found Internet discussion groups, including one on Topix called "No acorns this year," reporting the same thing from as far away as the Midwest up through New England and Nova Scotia. "We live in Glenwood Landing, N.Y., and don't have any acorns this year. Really weird," wrote one. "None in Kansas either! Curiouser and curiouser."
…
Rachel Tolman, a naturalist at Long Branch, smeared a big glop of peanut butter on one of the nature center's trees. She grabbed handfuls of store-bought hazelnuts and placed them atop boxes to attract the tiny, nocturnal flying squirrels that tend to mass in the oaks every winter. Within seconds, the squirrels dive-bombed in from nearby trees, legs outstretched like fist-size silvery-gray sky divers. "They're so much more willing to be seen this year," Tolman said. "It's because they're so hungry."
Tolman was the first naturalist to notice that there were no acorns or hickory nuts this year. Each fall, starting in September, she takes daily walks through the forest to collect nuts and acorns to feed the flying squirrels and other animals at the center through the winter. This year, she found nothing. "I'm hoping this is just some weird anomaly," she said.
Hazelnuts gone and peanut butter licked clean, the still-hungry flying squirrels scampered high into the tree canopy and chirped angrily for more.
First off, re machine - it's not brain surgery - the machine I normally use has to be right because I base it all on what speed I'm doing and how long it's taking me vis a vis what it takes in LA. On today's machine, I was going more than double the speed I run in LA - it was absolutely crazy. I don't get winded and I did today. It was, in fact, a joke. And if you run eight miles, I'm sorry, you burn 1000 calories. Anyway, it doesn't matter - I don't run tomorrow and on Tuesday I will only use the machine I'm used to.

I don't think ANY bailout money for ANY industry should go for ANY executive salary.
The Amazing Race is DELAYED on the East Coast.
7:40 and the game isn't over yet.
I still don't want my tax money paying executive salaries.
Ohh... Hmmm... Anderson Cooper in swimtrunks... Hmmm...
DR Cillaliz - the Chex cookies turned out to be quite good. . . .once cut into very small squares.
I still don't want my tax money paying executive salaries.
Then we shouldn't bail them out! But if we are going to, we should do it wisely.

Do you like the idea of bail-out money going to pay for over-priced, under-worked, UAW labor?
Oh heck, I think they should give the bail out money to the people who pay thier bills on time and live within their means. ;)

It is getting harder and harder to find enough nuts to get you thru the winter!
But Michael Phelps racing Anderson Cooper in the pool should be the next story
Are there any DRs who happen to have FREE access to newspaper records? -I'm actually trying to track down an obituary of a friend, and can't seem to track it down online - at least through regular channels. He passed away in 1996 if that makes any difference as to what or how I should be looking for the records.

The Amazing Race is DELAYED on the East Coast.
All of our family travelers are safely home after our festive Thanksgiving weekend. My cousin and his wife returned to Georgia yesterday, my sister and her husband drove to Michigan today and their daughter drove to Illinois. They drove into the snow that Rob and Mary Linda drove out of, returning here from a quick trip Friday-Sunday to visit her family. They're crashing here tonight before returning to Cincinnati tomorrow.
The Amazing Race is DELAYED on the East Coast.
I'm so glad i don't have to watch on CBS!
What a crazy episode! (i believe it's over now for you guys).
WOW - the Bacharach event is TOMORROW!
Since we're talking about bailouts and wasting bailout money again, if anyone hasn't seen my youtube "AIG BAILOUT PARODY SONG" (on which I got a majorly helpful assist with bringing the video elements together by Jose's roommate Jim):
