Post by: bk on December 07, 2008, 12:26:13 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes raised a ruckus, and now it is time for you to post until the raised cows come home.

DR Cillaliz, the new shades look quite lovely.  I've never understood how window treatments have become so expensive.

ON THIS DAY:

On Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese warplanes attacked the home base of the U.S. Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, drawing the United States into World War II. More than 2,300 Americans were killed.

DR Jane, re: my brother-in-law caring about my niece sitting on santa without him.

I don't think he cared. She called him right after.

I did'nt want to take the picture, to just make it less of a thing.  But we were taking our own pics with some trees and finally got her christmas card picture.

I still remember that "Scarecrow, Scarecrow-ow" theme song.

To the extent less-than-famous theme songs are part of the mental soundtrack when I happen to think back on my childhood, that's one of them, along with "The Ballad of Josie, a  story to remember" and "With A Little Love (just a little love) - the Debbie Reynolds Show theme" and "Where were you when the lights went out" and "If it's Tuesday this must be Belgium" and "The one and only genuine original family band" and of course the oft-spoken-of-by-me fanfare theme from Viva Max.

(a reference to the Scarecrow reference in the notes)

Happy B'Day to Jane!

Jrand, regards your Burton Jimmy Porter question about LOOK BACK IN ANGER...Jimmy Porter is pretty much that disagreeable in the play.  When the John Osborne play first premiered at the Royal Court, it was the one that ushered in the "Angry Young Man" movement of British plays and playwrights in the fifties.  Though even I find the amount of "Welsh honking" that Burton does in the movie a tad over the top, it's still strangely compelling. I just picked up a DVD of the film for three bucks at my local Big Lots.

Judi Dench directed a television version of the play a few years back, with Ken Branagh and Emma Thompson, that I remember liking quite a lot.  It can be found in the BBC's boxed set of Judi Dench, along with a lot of other terrific stuff.  If you want to know more about "the angry young man" movement...a fascinating time in British theatre...I recommend John Heilpern's excellent biography, JOHN OSBORNE, THE MANY LIVES OF THE ANGRY YOUNG MAN.  I couldn't put this book down.  What a fascinating, self-destructive talent!

BK & I shared many a good time at the late Beverly Garland's hotel when it hosted the Ray Court Memorabilia Shows. RIP, Ms. Garland.

BK, I'm glad to hear the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh series from Disney is out on DVD.  I shall try to track it down.  I've never seen it; but in the last few years I've become interested in the novels on which it is based.  There are probably a half dozen of them, written in the early part of the twentieth century by Russell Thorndyke (Does he spell it Thorndike?), who was an occasional actor  (I think he plays the priest in Olivier's HAMLET) and also the brother of the great actress, Dame Sybil Thorndyke.  All the books are in public domain and can be downloaded right off the internet.  I haven't read any of them yet.

Thanks for the recommendations, DR CP.....I noticed the different productions when I was looking at its listing on IMDB.  And I kept thinking I had seen the actor who played Cliff....turns out he was the greedy cousin in SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER and had a recurring role on one of my favorite TV series from the 60's - THE RAT PATROL, next in COLOR on ABC.

And now for something tacky...

A couple of days ago, a group at the store had food brought in from Kentucky Fried Bird.  I don't know why they do things like this - we serve up pretty good birds at our Deli/Food to Go dept. - but some people insist on having fast food.  Le sigh.

I found a packet of what looked like honey, left on one of the break room's tables.  But it wasn't honey, not exactly.  It was a packet of the Colonel's Honey Sauce.

Yep, that's how it's labled.

And, in much smaller print on the front of the packet, it read "11% real honey."

I had to blink at that one.  Just 11% real honey?

Sure enough, on the back of the packet there was a list of the ingredients:

High Fructose Corn Syrup
Sugar
Corn Syrup
Honey
Caramel Color.

EEEEWWWWWWWW!!!!!!

What is this?  Do we have to have high fructose corn syrup in everything?  Is it really necessary to have it in our honey?  Isn't honey sweet enough on it's own?

This sort of additives/manufactured cr@p just makes me sick.

And it's making a whole lot of other people sick, too, but at least I'm trying not to eat the stuff.

Bleh.

Good morning, all! I slept late and I have things to do before meeting Matthew, my best friend from college, to see MILK at 2 pm. After that, we'll have a dinner-catch up session since we haven't seen each other since September. He has plans at 6:30 or so, and I have things to do here, like learn if my friend Nick wins the AMAZING RACE.

I discovered in my wallet last night a Fed EX/Kinko's receipt from a week ago for binding some music, and I had totally forgotten about it. So I need to run over to them and pick up three Arthur Sullivan scores. After that, some Toyland work and later the Happiest Fellow.

Fifty years ago, when the TV GUIDE was really what its title says - I remember reading on the Yellow News Page (remember those?) - that the cast of Alfred Hitchcock's AN UNLOCKED WINDOW was not given the final few pages of the script until time for shooting.

And it is also one of my favorite television episodes of ANY series ever - with some terrific performances by Dana Wynter, Louise Latham, John Kerr, and T.C. Jones.

DR DANISE - it is not your responsibility if the doggie takes the walk.  He has a whole week, and I think people who come in looking for pets are encouraged to look at the dogs on the line first.

And if he bit someone, no matter how nice he seemed on the day you saw him, there is something in his nature that is unpredictable and could make him difficult for you to own.

Impending doom - no matter how tragic - is not a motive to adopt a pet.

I can't believe you wouldn't want to after it's been a Christmas mainstay for the last decade, just for curiosity sake alone.

I saw/reviewed it when it came out. I was enchanted by it then, and it still works its spell on me now. So many things about it ring true even though I was a generation later than the time period of the movie.

With the whole day free, I'm not sure what I want to watch. DR. SYN certainly seems tempting. So does ANNETTE. I have a stack of Blu-rays and a smaller stack of HD-DVDs I'd like to start winnowing down. So many choices.

I do have one more Bette Davis movie in her last Warner set (IN THIS OUR LIFE) that I'll likely watch at some point today. It's never been a favorite despite being directed by John Huston. This kind of female-driven melodrama just isn't his cup of tea.

The Jar is the other Hitchcock hour that is brilliant - and also one of the greatest hour-long episodes of a TV series ever.  It, too, has a score by Herrmann and is brilliantly directed with great performances by Pat Buttram and especially Colin Wilcox as Thedy Sue.  Based on a Ray Bradbury story.  Or, to put it the way this generation puts it - based off a Ray Bradbury store.  I gotta tell you.

No, it makes you a lucky heathen.
DR singdaw - Yes, you're a heathen. But is that really new news?  ;)

I'm afraid I have to agree with Jose.  You are a heathen.  ;)

Only because I haven't met one person who hasn't seen that movie and can't identify with at least one scene from it.

For me, it's the bit about the fathers cursing.  My Dad didn't have the furnace to fight, it was the car.  I remember the choice words he used when he was working on the car.  :)  Mom would go outside and tell him 'Danny, please the neighbours will hear you!"

Of course at that point, he also had some choice words about what the neighbours could do about it!  :) :) :)

Nigel is a purebred Yorkshire Terrier, about 6 months old...still has a bit of piddling problem, but we're working on that.  Otherwise spunky and energetic with lots of Personality, as the Cole Porter song goes.

Not quite sure why I can't that picture of Nigel full-size in the body of the post.  But if you double-click, it brings it up bigger.

The "thumbnail" is standard for this "new board".  It allows you to post larger size pics now without throwing the board into VistaVision.  You must have been out of class that day.  ;)

  Before I go...

I know, DR JRand but what gets me is when an animal bites someone, it's always their fault and they pay the price with their life.  Everyone, including animals, can have  a bad day and we don't know what the human did to spark that bite.  For all we know, he or she may have deserved it.

Wouldn't it be a horrible thing if WE were put down or marked for the rest of of lives for one small mistake.

I'm going to be praying extra hard this week that the dog gets it's 2nd chance at life but if it is still there come Saturday, I just may have a new addition to my small family.  I can't stand by when a life is in the balance and do nothing.

I have a feeling that no matter the size and manner of the crowd, DR elmore will find something "horrifying" about it.  ;)

DR Danise - Soaking chestnuts in salt water doesn't really "salt" them. The salt in the soaking water helps to draw out any extra moisture in the chestnuts.  Any "saltiness" is just a result of any soaking water left in the chestnut.  Since you're diluting the salt in water, you would have to add a copious amount of salt in order to make a difference.  However...

If you start off the soak in warm(!) salted water, that will help a little.  Or you could soak them in salted water, then bring them up to boil in the salted water for a minute or two.  Then take them out of the water and put them in the oven to roast.

Or just REALLY salt the water.  -Of course, as for salt and sodium... Didn't you see the article I posted earlier? ;)

*Personally, I like my chestnuts on the sweet side.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And not only is the Internet out again - which isn't bugging me that much today - but I just had to call the landlord to remind her to call the oil company since there's been no heat for the past 24 hours. :-\ Thankfully, I have a very toasty down comforter.

Matt just left a few minutes ago. There is indeed a crack in one of the joists in the basement--Matt said it will be easy to fix. We heard something about SIX cracks and $10-15K, but we only found the one and Matt's estimate is NOTHING like the above number.

BTW, for Singdaw and others, I deliberately did not have all the repirs on my list done prior to the inspection, as someone mentioned to me that home inspectors feel obliged to find something for their report. I was simply trying to make his job easier, yes? Interesting, the inspector didn't find ANY of them.

I have always been a believer in home inspections, but I must say that this one hasn't done a service to either the buyers or the seller.

Yesterday was packing day. A friend came by and helped me pack many items. Although I plan to use professional movers, I haven't been happy with the movers packing me in the past. I have a system where everything is organized and labelled--and it REALLY makes unpacking easier. I knew this friend would appreciate my systematic method. What's discouraging, though, is how much is left to do. oy!

Yesterday, I had to pick to pick up some shelf clips for my bookcase, and since I couldn't find what I wanted anywhere else; I decided to bite the bullet and go to Lowe Depot*.  Since I was already there, I went over to their "Holiday Decoration Center" to see if I could find a large, lighted, artificial wreath to hang on the outside of my balcony.

Now yesterday was December 6.  Is that really too late in the seaon to hope to find decorations?  Everything was totally picked over, and what was left was really ugly.  Am I expecting too much to find decorations in this massive "Holiday Decoration Center" on the first Saturday in December?

*Any similarity to actual stores is purely intentional.

Jose, maybe we can channel you some of our heat. We have the reverse problem. It's 35 degrees right now, not terribly cold but winterish weather. In the apartment the temperature is hovering around 85 degrees. We have steam radiators and THEY ARE NOT TURNED ON and the temperature is still 85 degrees. The silly thing is other tenants in the building are complaining about little or no heat. We have had this problem for years but this season it seems particularly bad. We have a window open in the bedroom and the living room and a small fan going in each window to make it seem less like sultry summer and more like the end of fall.

Milk, by the way, is a wonderful, moving film. Sean Penn becomes Milk and I don't feel there is a false moment in his entire performance. The whole thing is beautifully cast and, like Jose, I cried more than once.

We are on our way to a holiday party later this afternoon. We will be on the Upper West Side breaking bread and grog with the likes of Marni Nixon.

Well... Now that the oil company has come and gone, we now have heat again.  Well, they're at least warming back up again.  However, we have the same issue too with "overheating".  But as I've mentioned in the past, our landlord has the radiators' thermostat on a timer, so the heat only comes on a certain times of the day - which, alas, is usually when no one is in the building.  -I'm still trying to figure out why she continues to set it "off" between 8:00pm and 4:00am, but has it going at 8:00am-2:00pm.  ???

Anyhoo... At least you can open a window at your place.  If I open mine, then I end up with too much second-hand cigarette smoke from the people next door who smoke on their stoop. :-\

I watched "The Seeker" (The Dark is Rising) last night.

So sad that the story had to be Americanised so much (I guess to sell it). The book is so dependent upon English Mythology.  I've read the books in the series  (about 15 years ago).

I had no problems with placing the children into the present (Mobile phones and computer technology etc) but was disappointed in so much.

Danise, sad as it may be, the shelters put down thousands of dogs each year.

Think long and hard. If you adopt a dog with a biting history, your Homeowners Insurance probably will be subject to cancellation. If you adopt the biter, some other non-biter will take his place in the line.

You can't save all the ones heading for disposal this week, and next week there will be more. At least find an animal with no suspicious history.

Speaking of lives in balance, is your shelter one of the many that automatically puts down certain breeds (like Pit Bulls)?

Does your shelter offer a limited-time return policy? Many shelters will let you return an adopted animal for credit on another adoption if the animal does not fit in. If offered, that is an easy way to get an animal home for a trial. (Meet and greets in a kennel yard often fail to disclose a territoriality instinct that will make the home dog hostile to a new addition  when on it's own turf)

It's a brilliant condensation of the novel (even with an American in the lead). It used to be one of my favorite activities to teach the book to my seventh graders and then we'd watch the movie and write papers on the changes from book to film.

Next, I watched two more BONES episodes so I could finish disc two in the third season set. One was the infamously delayed (for a season) episode concerning the murder of the college basketball player. Very good episode.

The disc contained both the aired episode and the original episode which had scenes of Hodgins proposing to Angela which had to be deleted with other scenes put in its place since that storyline played out at the end of the previous season.

Listening to a CD, and getting ready to eat tuna sandwiches for lunch - just what I was craving.  Then I'll watch a DVD or three.  I actually began watching White Christmas last night in the bedroom environment - despite having owned the original DVD and then the one that came out last year or so, I actually haven't seen the damn thing in over twenty, maybe thirty years.  I must say, I'm finding it VERY enjoyable.  I'd forgotten that two of the screenwriters were the great Panama and Frank - and yes, the jokes and humor work better here than on stage.

ON THIS DAY:

On Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese warplanes attacked the home base of the U.S. Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, drawing the United States into World War II. More than 2,300 Americans were killed.

It wouldn't feel like my birthday is someone didn't remember Pear Harbor.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEAREST JANE!!!

Enjoy a glorious walk and the lovely sky and all your family  (the two-legged ones and 4-legged ones)

And cake.  Never forget cake.

Thank you.  I walked with two of my family.  Keith didn't dress warm enough so it wasn't a long walk, just short & sweet.

No cake.  I did have an early birthday Carvel's cake last week :)

Back from the movies and dinner with Matthew. We had a great day and a tasty meal at the diner on 44th and 9th Avenue, caught up on all our (mis)adventures, and went separate ways, he to conduct a tour of Radio City, Grand Central Station, and other parts of Manhattan and I to a taxi.  As to the movie, it was a real nostalgia blitz of life between 1970 and 1978, and I wept through a lot of it. The cast is really quite wonderful, looking amazingly like their real counterparts, and Sean Penn is absolutely wonderful. As to the huge crowds, I suspect we sat in an audience of fifty people at the most, but the audience was amazingly silent and gave the film a big hand at the end.

Sunday evening greetings!  DH Richard presided over morning prayer today, as our priest is fulfilling a National Guard obligation this weekend and next.  After church, Richard took the entire congregation out for lunch - Rob, Mary Linda, and me.

He and I did some Christmas shopping on the way home and now I'm going to deck some more halls.

That was it?  Four people at the service?

Well, our wonderful organist, Rick, was there, too, but was unable to go to lunch because he was playing a carillon concert in Mariemont shortly after church adjourned.

Yes, we're a very small mission and many of the others are quite elderly.  It was so cold today and slippery that we think they just stayed home.

Average Price of Gasoline Reaches Lowest Level in Nearly 5 Years

Sunday, December 07, 2008

CAMARILLO, Calif. —  The average price of U.S. gasoline fell 22 cents a gallon during the past two weeks, bringing it to its lowest level in nearly five years, according to a national survey released Sunday.
The average price of regular gasoline Friday was $1.75 a gallon, oil industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said. The price of mid-grade was $1.90 a gallon and the price of premium was $2.02 a gallon.

Anf not a single thank you from BK to the Oil Companies.

Oh, I'm sure you know why this is happening - as I said months ago, the oil companies are scared shitless of Obama and what he might do - they are doing this in quite a calculated manner.  If only this election had been just before doing The Brain in Anaheim, I probably could have saved myself about $1000 in gas.

Good morning!  Feeling a bit better this morning.  Still very phlegm-y, but less sinus pressure and therefore less pain.  I feel that it is probably moving down into my chest, and will become a persistent cough for a few weeks.  That I can handle.  I by-passed the dreaded ear infection stage, so I'm happy.

A VERY VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR LOVELY DR JANE.  I hope it is a day filled with family, good tidings, and cake.  Lots of cake.

My two sandwiches were quite yummilicous, and I also had some cantaloupe.  That will be it for today, because tomorrow I'm being taken to  lunch (a Thai place - I've already warned that I will eat only an appetizer, say egg rolls or chicken satay or something like that), and then I'm being taken to The Smoke House for dinner.  Obviously that will be my splurge meal for the next two weeks, what with the garlic cheese bread and whatever else I may eat - I may have the Louis and try to do cocktail sauce along with the Louis dressing, so I don't have TOO many calories.  Otherwise, I may just opt for the prime rib - we shall see.  Of course, I'd love the clam chowder, too, but that's gilding the lily just a little too much.  Or I could have a big bowl of clam chowder and the garlic cheese bread and stop right there - but that won't be happening.  No, best to stay away from the clam chowder, methinks.

I remember the only time I ever visited Disney World.  It was in September, and the temperature was over 90 with equal humidity.  Suddenly it started raining, actually more of what I would call a mist; and suddenly the entire park emptied out.  I couldn't believe it, you would have thought they had closed down the park.  No lines on any rides.  Fantastic.

Nope - no cause and effect at all. The retail price is simply following the price of crude, which is not under control of the Oil Companies. In fact, Obama has already backed off the idea of a windfall profits tax for the oil companies, so they have nothing at all to fear.

I have had the most peculiar thing happen. All of a sudden, my HD-DVD player will not recognize any remote controls. The player itself works fine when I use the play, pause, and chapter ahead buttons on the front, but no remote works with it, even with fresh batteries. I tried cleaning to front in case the sensor was blocked or smudged or something, but that didn't do any good at all. I really have no idea why it doesn't recognize either the remote that came with it or the universal remote that has the codes punched in for that model.

So, instead of watching THE THING on HD-DVD which I had planned, I just put in DR. NO once again on Blu-ray and watched that. At least THAT remote works perfectly.

Today, we had another great show. ;D We have more people in today's audience than in last night's, but both were good audiences.  Now, we have three days off, but on Tuesday, I'm going to see Seven Brides for Seven Brothers in Seattle. :)

TNT's LEVERAGE is definitely a keeper; a Mission Impossible scenario with a very attractive cast, nice writing, good filming and super editing.

I want you all to be careful out there.  We need to stick together and realize what a great thing we have here.  Ok, perhaps a little sentimental, but where else I can find a group as wonderful as you?  As us, I should say.   Who is better than us?

Good Evening!

A friend of mine happened to catch me online earlier, and wanted to know if I had had dinner yet, and since I hadn't, well...  He had just gotten back from a family vacation - his parents' 50th(!) wedding anniversary - down in Walt Disney World, and didn't have any food in his place, and I was more than happy to accompany him to a great little diner uptown.

While we walked to the diner, we happened to see - well, hear - a man get struck by a livery cab.  Thankfully, there were some other witnesses closer to the scene, and once we were sure they were making the requisite calls to the police, we continued walking.  About two blocks away, we saw a police cruiser and were about to go tell them that there was an accident, but then a bicycle delivery man rode up and told them.  I hope the man who was hit is OK.

Dinner was very good, and we had a great time catching up.  And our waiter was also a hoot.  A bit aloof and distant at times, but he "walked the walk, and talked the talk". ;)

Then on the way back from the diner, we happened to see a man get caught off guard by a big gust of wind.  He ended up falling into one of the metal garbage cans that are set up on the street corners.  Thankfully, he had a friend walking with him, and he was also able to use the lamp post to help re-steady himself.

Stay warm.  Stay safe.

Disney World is in Florida; Disney Land is in California.    :)

Actually... "Walt Disney World" is in Florida.  "Disneyland" is in California.

And I'm wondering if the reports and speculations that gas could get back down in the $1.00/gallon range within the first six months of 2009 will come true.

Oh, I'm sure you know why this is happening - as I said months ago, the oil companies are scared shitless of Obama and what he might do - they are doing this in quite a calculated manner.

Nope - no cause and effect at all. The retail price is simply following the price of crude, which is not under control of the Oil Companies. In fact, Obama has already backed off the idea of a windfall profits tax for the oil companies, so they have nothing at all to fear.

der Brucer

Uh huh.  Sure.  'Fraid not.  There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Just nosing around the Internet - not much interesting going on.  Sounds like it's drizzling outside.  If it's raining in the morning then no jog for me.

I looked up calories for clam chowder and surprisingly a bowl of it isn't nearly as bad as I though, and a cup is quite reasonable.  Lots of fat grams, though, but calorie-wise, not terrible.  Still, I think I've already decided to do the Louis with both Louis dressing and red sauce, and the garlic cheese bread.  Okay, MAYBE a CUP of clam chowder, but then there might be dessert, so maybe not.

Of course, that's presuming that the websites you've been checking out have the caloric information for the Clam Chowder that they serve at the Smoke House.  Anyhoo...

Just order a cup.  Have a couple of spoonfuls, then push it aside.  Or have someone else at your table take it from you. ;)

I'll try to be good, but I suppose if it's my one big splurge of the last six months it'll be okay.  Of course, the next day I'm going to Langer's for pastrami, but I've never gained weight having a pastrami sandwich and one latke.  Of course, Wednesday and Thursday I'm going to Hugo's, but Papa's Eggs is very lowcal, so that's good.  After Thursday, I'll do Subway for a couple of days and that should put everything right, presuming anything goes wrong.  I do find that if I do the four miles, anything's fair game, food-wise.

TAR in Portland was fun! It was great to see the contestants pass by locations downtown that I see all the time!

And it is interesting how everything seems to happen so fast...but really, it is quite a long drive from Newburg to The Bridge of the Gods...at least an hours drive, I would think.

My supervisor stole it from me as soon as she saw it. I presume it will be returned on Monday.
