Title: FORTY YEARS AGO
Post by: bk on December 11, 2008, 12:43:50 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had forty years of history, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've been trying to come home for forty years, and who knows, this year may be it.

I moved  from my family's home in Coon Rapids to one of the dorms on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis campus). I moved a few more times during my college years and then I moved to New York in 1980. I moved 4 times between 1980 and 1983 (there was a time in that period when I was on the road) and then I settled into my current abode where I have been since 1983 (25 years). I only wish it were a house or apartment so I could say I own it but it's still a nice place (at least that's what those of you who have been here tell us).

Rose (Anthony's mother) enjoys computer games so I might purchase for her (as a Christmas gift) a game called 4 Elements. I got caught up in it last night. I went to play to see how it all works and what the specs are, etc. I ended up playing for over an hour.

My only major move other than coming down to Florida was about 8 months or so when I lived in Denver. I didn't have a car and they had a lousy public transport system.

Good morning, all! This morning I have a date with my barber to have a few hairs cut and a trip to Music Theatre International to look at the original London orchestra parts for THE MOST HAPPY FELLA. Following that, I will stop at NYPL at Lincoln Center for a bit of reasearch before heading back here. Depending on the elements, I may do laundry, but I may hold off on it till tomorrow since it means schlepping everything down the block.

I made two big moves, a disastrous one in 1971 to teach at Shippensburg State University in Pennsylvania, a major debacle in my life that sent me running back to mom and dad for several years, and then my move to Conquer The City in 1979.  The move to Pennsylvania was good for two things: it proved to me that I was never meant to exist in small university Academia and it was the first step in getting to Manhattan.

I was hired to replace a popular teacher and I think the director of the dept's disappointment that I was nowhere near as qualified, as well as my general lack of interest in academic minutiae, was what caused his ugliness and open hostility. Add to that my feelings he was a boor and a lousy stage director, and it was a no-win combo. Within six months I hated him and his dept as much as they hated me. I was devastated at the time when my contract was not renewed and I was told to vacate the premises, but I now know it was the best thing that could have happened. My options were to head east to Manhattan or west to Ohio and I chose to run home.  There I co-founded a community theatre, got to orchestrate for a community symphony, acted professionally, and grew up. A bit.

DR Jose and others:
Sometimes homeowners will call a home inspector for a home they've been living in for a while. Maybe they have a specific concern or maybe they just want someone to take a look. It's not a bad idea if you know a GOOD inspector. Like Jane implied, the inspectors that the realtors recommend tend to be lightweights because they don't want anything that would jeopardize the sale. So there are two (informal) classes of inspectors: the ones realtors use and the ones conscientious homeowners (and savvy buyers) look for.

As for the timing, it does seem a bit strange. But there's no point in a buyer shelling out hundreds of dollars for an inspection if the price they want isn't acceptable to the seller. So it makes sense to have at least a preliminary agreement. Most contracts are written with a contingency for home inspection, lender's approval, and appraisal. If the buyer isn't happy with the results of the inspection, then the parties can renegotiate.
Title: Re: FORTY YEARS AGO
Post by: singdaw on December 11, 2008, 07:04:46 AM
One timing consideration for a seller is that, once you KNOW about a problem from an inspection that has been performed, you are legally obligated to DISCLOSE it to potential buyers.

And I now have an appointment with a contractor regarding said basement repairs--just to be sure his estimate is consistent with that of the structural engineer. I'm told our buyer is VERY nervous and is imagining $$$$$.

Thanks, Sing. I'm trying to roll with the punches, but I admit there have been too many sleepless nights. I truly hope that the errors have all been honest ones. I'm told that some inspection companies will tell buyers that they can get them a lower price on their home by citing all sorts of stuff and scaring the seller. I don't even want to think about dirty tactics.

re: the last few seconds of this week's HEROES for DR MattH

If you're ever missing the ending of a show televisionwithoutpity has really great recaps. Usually they have the recaplet version and the extended full out line by line details of what happened.

Anyhow in the last minutes:

In the last minutes, Peter is trying to shoot his father (the Haitian is screaming that he needs to do it fast because he cannot hold back his powers). Sylar comes in freezes the bullet (that peter shot) and asks Arthur if he is his father (with his new lie detector abilities). Arthur lies, so sylar lets the bullet kill him. The catalyst which arthur stole from hiro is in the air (to disappear forever? to go into peter?).

When I graduated from college, I moved back in with my folks to begin my teaching career at a local junior high and to start work on my masters. Going to school during the summer and taking a course or two during the school year, it took me 3 years to finish my masters degree work and graduate. Once that was done, I still didn't have a lot of money to set out on my own, so I continued living with my folks putting aside parts of my monthly salary (only made about $700 a month after taxes back in the 70s) to save up enough to move out.

When I had finally saved up enough to make first and last month rent payments on an apartment in Charlotte (about 40 miles from home but in a different state), I found a beautiful one bedroom garden apartment and told my parents on a Saturday night at the supper table. They had no idea I was even contemplating leaving, and I remember that my mother cried all during supper. I was surprised at their surprise because my older brother had been gone for a long time (he never lived at home; he went straight from college into marriage and a house of his own) and I didn't figure they'd want me around with my flaky hours and midnight typing sessions (school work and review writing).

But while I was a bit scared to be on my own, I really couldn't wait to start living life as a single man with no one looking over my shoulder at the choices and decisions I was making.

For various reasons, I was born here and have alway lived here-- 49 years or more in the same zip code even;  I'm like a fruit bat and stay within a 4 mile or four block radius!  Part of it was Musicguy's job; part of it was watching over my younger siblings.  So, I'm still here.  Luckily I have traveled all over and experienced many wonders of the world. But i still live in Phoenix.   Not so bad, but at times I want to get away.  Jose?   Singdaw? TCB?  Jack?  Michael?  Tomovoz?  Any takers?  I'm relatively low-maintence!

Easy question today, BK.

My first big move in life was to leave my Seattle home and drive down to Los Angeles.

That was in the first week of November of 1963...about 3 weeks before JFK was shot.

[No, the 2 events are not connected.]

The drive took 2 1/2 days.  Spent the first night in Medford OR, the 2nd in Stockton, CA, then rolled into the San Fernando Valley around 2:30 the following afternoon.  Somehow, I found myself on Wilshire Blvd., between Beverly Hills and Westwood...totally lost.

So, I called the friend I was going to stay with and he came and got me.  Next day, I found my own place.

About 3-4 weeks later, Karen Kupsenut (sp), daughter of Chicago columnist Irv Kupsenut was murdered across the street and down the block aways from me.

[No, I didn't have anything to do with that either.]

Then, about 3-4 months later, I moved to a place on Normandie near Wilshire, which was closer to where I was working.

Not only was a woman raped in the building shortly after I moved in and there was a massive narcotics raid in the building across the street, but one of my fellow tenants was the infamous actress Barbara Payton.

Ah, the memories of youth.

 :)

DR BK:  re: the final question you pose in today's column:

I wonder if in forty years from now I’ll be looking back and talking about what I was doing right now? Of course, if that would be so, I’d be about 101 years old. Can you imagine me at 101 going on about the long jog, which would consist of me walking from the bedroom to the bathroom.

I can not only imagine it, but I envision it!   Let's ALL still be posting here and remember this day!

Title: Re: FORTY YEARS AGO
Post by: Ron Pulliam on December 11, 2008, 08:39:57 AM
My first "solo" move into a place of my own was also my first "big" move.  I had been in the Navy for three years but had always lived in barracks.  In 1973, I was assigned to an Army post in northern Italy in the city of Vicenza.  I was a journalist/broadcaster and Vicenza was the location of the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) facility that served Italy.  The Army was the "senior" branch of service in Italy and, therefore, hosted the AFRS station.  I was one of two Navy people there.  There were also two Air Force broadcasters.  The rest were Army and civilians (as many civilians as military!!!).

Being a Navy man on an Army post had its perks, including a room to myself in the barracks when I first arrived.  Unlike others in my paygrade (E-4, at that time), I was authorized (nay, encouraged) to live off post and the Navy was offering me an allowance for quarters (i.e. living accommodations).

I signed up with the housing office to tour available apartments/homes.  I finally found the right fit for me.  It was a third-story apartment (top floor) in a nice complex (six apartments, 2 per floor) about 2 miles from the post (Caserma Ederle in Vicenza, Italy).

I had two balconies -- one in front off the living room and one in back off my bedroom.  My living room "view" was a large cornfield, beyond which was the major street off which Caserma Ederle was positioned.  I could see the tops of the roofs on the post.  It was all about 3/4 mile from the center of Vicenza.

I felt rather "suburban" in an "urban" environment (what with the cornfield and all).  The road linking me to the post ran down the middle of the cornfields.  I bought an old Fiat, but I also had a bicycle.  The bicycling to work, especially for night shifts, was very eerie...and "Harvest Home" would always run through my head as I pedaled along the road.  It was even eerier when I had to stop for a train (a track ran through the cornfields, too, crossing the road I traveled).

I had a great view of some low mountains out my bedroom window.  There was also an unobstructed view of a rather unique-looking building out in what seemed to be a pasture.  While there were no cows, it was all open land, very grassy and nicely maintained.  I later learned this building had a name:  La Rotonda, and it had been designed/built by Italian architect Andrea Palladio (whose name lent itself to "Palladium" as a "style").  The "Rotunda" was Thomas Jefferson's inspiration for the center section of Monticello.

Atop the mountain (called Monte Berrico) was an old monastery that occasionally rang bells that wafted over the countryside.

I cannot recall how long I lived there before waking one day to one of the most spectacularly "clear" days ever.  In general, Vicenza was foggy in one way or another...high fog, that looked like clouds or ground-hugging, lung-filling, so-thick-you-had-to-feel-your-way-through-it fog (and I came to love it).  On this day, though, there was no fog.  I stood on my bedroom balcony and took in all the sights.  Off to the right, I could see the city rooftops and spires of churches and a bell tower.  And....WHAT?  What was that beyond the city?  HUGE, TOWERING mountains.  Snow-capped, too.  I later learned they were called "The Dolomites", the Italian section of the Alps.  Incredible sight.  It was in Europe that I experienced mountains so high they took your breath away.

My apartment was cozy, had two bedrooms (or three if you don't want a dining room), and had every room off a central entryway.  Tiny kitchen, nice-sized living room, marble floors and high windows.

I loved the independence.  I loved the privacy.  I loved it that folks enjoyed invitations to come over.  I still have a fondness for that first apartment.

As for the Topic of the Day....

Being the son of a father in the Coast Guard...

Born in Boston, but moved/transferred down to Washington, DC., a few months after I was born.

Seven years later, we moved/transferred to Seattle with a preliminary stop in Port Angeles.

Two years later, we moved/transferred to New London/Gales Ferry, CT. *Which is where I started taking proper piano lessons. -Although, I did take some sort of keyboard/piano lessons in some mall shop in Seattle.

Then about two years after that, we moved/transfered back down to the DC area, Arlington, VA.

Then came the move down to Richmond for college.  -Where, during my first week at school, someone was stabbed in broad daylight in front of the campus gym, and there was a shooting out at the off-campus housing where I was living.  (Blame me?)

I bopped between my parents' house in Fairfax and Richmond for a few years, before getting my own place in Richmond... Then moving in with Steve...

And three and a half years ago... New York City!

Some wonderful stories today generating from the TOD!  :)

My story is not nearly so interesting:

Born in New Jersey.  My family moved to Los Angeles when I was 3.  Transferred back to Connecticut when I was 8.  And, other than four years of school in Ohio, I've moved quite a few times since, but all within the NYC metro area.

Some very interesting choices in the Acting categories.

And I'm very happy to see "Slumdog Millionaire" in the Best Picture category.

DR Druxy, did you read the new book on Barbara Payton...it is great!

I haven't read it.

Actually, I have researched my own book on the Barbara Payton, Franchot Tone, Tom Neal triange, but my agents were never able to interest a major publisher.  The major roadblock: Who remembers these people?

I did some interesting interviews, too.  Like the owner of the apartment building who witnessed Neal beating the crap out of Tone.

The book is one of my "to do" projects...should the time ever become right.

Arriving nearby is one thing....and having it delivered...well.....

I once noted a package arrived in Oakland four days before it was actually delivered.   As it wasn't for express delivery, I had nothing specific I could complain about.  I  got it within the window provided for said delivery.

I think bk might be at an advantage since he has his mail and packaged delivered to a "mail place".

However, I have noticed that UPS' shipping times have been on the shorter end of delivery windows lately.

TOD: My first "big" move was when I left home to go to the University of Kansas.  I didn't have a car there, so even though it's an 8 hour drive it could have been 1000 miles away.   On the way we had some sort of car trouble. When we arrived they had 3 people assigned to a small 2 person dorm room, so they wanted me to stay in the ironing room that night. I didn't know anyone there and didn't really want to sleep in the ironing room so instead we went to a motel and went back the next morning.  Since the 3rd person hadn't checked in yet, they gave me the room.

I transferred to the University of Iowa after 2 years and after I decided I didn't want to be a flute performance major after all.  There were no rooms available for transfer students in the dorm so I got an apartment.  I had no idea about how to go about getting an apartment, but went and started looking and found one in a "security building" (the door was always open so the "security" was really a joke).  I still didn't have a car, so I got to lug groceries on the bus and all that fun stuff, but I did have my own place.

After law school I made the huge move to Phoenix.  The original plan was to move to Juneau, Alaska, but I met a guy and he wanted to go to Phoenix, so I changed all my plans and went there instead. He lasted 4 days, I stayed 5 years.   That was a very hard move and probably the most alone I've ever been in my life.   I didn't have a job, but got one as a law clerk for a judge fairly quickly then it was on to the public defender's office.  I met lots of people there, but it never felt like home to me.  I am very happy to be back in Iowa and plan to stay right where I am for the duration.

My first big move was in 1983 at age 19. I moved from my dad and stepmom's home in White City to my owm apartment in Ashland. My roommate was a co-worker named Howard Swanson. Eventually a friend of Howard's moved in.

About 6 months later I made my next big move...packing my cat and all my belongings into my 1975 AMC Matador, and came to Salem, Oregon. That was in 1984.

My first move was a short distance from home.  It was difficult as my parents did not want me to move out & felt at 18, with little money, I was too young.  The move itself was easy.  It was a little bachelor apartment smaller than my bedroom at home.

The first major move was with the movers from hell.  Keith had moved to New Jersey with the two dogs, leaving me with an almost two year old & three cats.  One of the cats got very sick before we moved, two days after the move she had surgery to remove a tumor.  We went from sunny California to cold New Jersey.  I was excited about the move until my friend broke down crying at the airport.  I flew the entire flight chasing an active kid around the plane, worrying about the cats in cargo (will never do that again), depressed & wondering what had we done.  The furniture did not arrive until 2 weeks after us since the driver abandoned the truck on the way.  Keith was out of town at the time & the new crew basically dumped everything, didn't even put the beds together.  My car had been on that truck & I couldn't even get out to buy diapers or winter clothes.

After that move the other 8 seemed like a breeze in comparison, even the difficult ones.  Not that any long distance move is really easy and most were far from it.

I did notice something funny about two shipments last week that arrived unannounced.  Must be that new computer system Amazon recently started using.

I learned one thing this past weekend--before you order anything on the innernet, check to see if there is a coupon code posted somewhere or other.  I was about to put through an order for a rather pricey item on the National Geographic site when a friend who was looking over my shoulder told me I should Google for a coupon code.  Sure enough, I found one for 20% off!

It never hurts to look.

TOD - I also made the first of my big moves 40 years ago when I went to Ann Arbor for my freshman year at The University of Michigan.  The separation was eased by the fact that during the summer after my high school graduation my parents moved out of the house I'd grown up in - in fact, when I got home from freshman orientation my bed was gone!

Then, a little over 35 years ago I moved from Michigan to Middletown, Ohio, to accept my first professional librarian position in the Miami University library there.  Little did I imagine that I'd still be living there when just a few weeks away from retirement.

There was some really excellent special effects work with the three lab techs on top of the Empire State Building, and with the height of the camera shooting down, I got some distinct scares of a fear of falling. HD adds so much enjoyment to the viewing experience.

I just read that LEVERAGE had 3.1 million viewers for its second episode broadcast on Tuesday night. Those are OK numbers, certainly not approaching the popularity of THE CLOSER but certainly enough to keep the show on the air for the rest of its season.

I told my friends about it at lunch, and though none of them had seen the previous two episodes, I got several to agree to watch next week's episode.

My afternoon surfing is over now so I must head downstairs to clean the bedrooms (didn't get to it this morning; slept late again) and then get back to leisure viewing.

ABC PARAMOUNT--Our music sounds like it goes through a loopy rainbow thing!

That loopy thing is a Möbius strip - a one-dimensional surface (it only has one side).

How that relates to the sound waves passing through escapes me.

A talking frog goes into a bank and approaches the teller.
He sees right away from her window nameplate that her
name is Patricia Whack. (He can read too!)

"Miss Whack, I would like to get a $30,000 loan in order to take a
holiday," he says.

Patty looks at the frog in disbelief. In keeping with bank policy
pertaining to customer relations, she asks the frog his name.

The frog says that his name is Kermit Jagger, adds the fact that his dad
is Mick Jagger, and that it is ok to give him the loan as he knows the
bank manager personally.

Patty explains that he will have to secure the loan with some
collateral, to which the frog replies, "Sure, no problem, I have this"
and produces a tiny porcelain elephant about half an inch tall, bright
pink and perfectly formed.

Very confused, Patty explains that she will have to consult with the
bank manager and disappears into the back office.  She finds the
manager and says, "There's a frog at my window who says his name
is Kermit Jagger, he claims to know you and says his dad is Mick Jagger...
AND he want to use this as collateral."

She holds up the tiny elephant and says "I mean, what in the world is this thing???"

The bank manager looks back at her and says,
"It's a knick-knack, Patty Whack, give the frog a loan.
His old man's a Rolling Stone."

True to my word, I watched the Blu-ray of IRON MAN tonight. Sharpness issues aside, the biggest improvement from DVD to Blu-ray is in the more realistic flesh tones. The DVD made everyone's skin look like a brown mask. On the Blu-ray, the tone and texture of each person's skin is SO much more distinct and real looking. The Dolby TrueHD track was much more open and spread out. For an action movie, I didn't think IRON MAN had nearly the kind of energetic 5.1 mix than other superhero movies typically have. What's there is good but not great. The TrueHD track gave it more personality but it still isn't a reference quality sound mix.

As fot the topic of the day...I was born in Alabama (my dad was in the army) and we lived in Alabama, Georgia, California, Texas and Germany by the time I was four years old.  We moved to Colorado when I was seven and Washington when I was ten years old.  My parents still live in the house in Lacey, WA that they bought 32 years ago.  My first real move was when I went away to Western Washington University.  I first went to Centralia College (a two-year college) and still lived at home.  I then transfered to Western in Bellingham, WA.  I went to Western for three years (I changed my major in the last year, but was able to graduate) and then moved back home.  I lived with my parents for about a year and a half, and met this girl (no...not like that ;)) in a show.  She wanted to move out of her mom's and I wanted to move out of my parents' so we rented an apartment, actually just a few blocks away and on the same street from where I live now!  Anyway, I've had several apartments and even lived with my sister since then, but now I own a condo!  I don't plan on EVER moving again...unless I win the lottery.  But since I don't buy tickets, it's not very likely that I'll win and move.  And that's my story. ;D
