Good morning, Dear Readers!  I am preparing to get in the car to drive over the river and through the woods to grandmother's mom's house to do our annual two-day stint of holiday baking.  Should be a blast!

Today we will putter around with the Christmas tree, make a trip to the post office, have some lunch and then Anthony will go uptown to a dance rehearsal. I will meet him afterwards and we will go to the

Morgan Library Babar Exhibit (http://www.themorgan.org/exhibitions/exhibition.asp?id=4)

The Morgan has free admission on Fridays from 7-9pm so we are taking advantage of that option. There are many things to see at The Morgan, including the beautiful library but we will just see the Babar exhibit for now and go back another time for other viewings

Good morning, all! In 30 minutes I will head down to Tekserve and pick up my old computer, take it to the office, stop at FedEx for some boxes on the way back, and pack up a few things to ship to Ohio. Then, physical therapy at 1, and I'll pack up what I need to send by Fed Ex. Tonight my drummer friend Chris and I may see a movie or a show.

DR Ben, I love the Morgan Library, but I haven't been there since my friend Ric Wilscon left their Gilbert & Sullivan Collection to become curator for the Harvard Theatre Collection. The Morgan's G&S Collection may be the world's largest and they've had a couple of great exhibits. The Morgan also owns the manuscript score of Offenbach's Robinson Crusoe. Enjoy the Babar exhibit.

DR Ben - You will love the Babar exhibit at The Morgan, and it's large enough that your two-hours will undoubtedly be filled with many happy elephant sightings.  I, myself, need to get back there to do a more thorough "immersion" after my brief visit a couple of weeks ago.

And speaking of exhibits... "Measuring Your Own Grave" by Marlene Dumas which is about to open to the public at MoMA... WOW!  Truly haunting, even disturbingly frank images.

But "REBUS" is a lot of fun.  It's a an artist-curated exhibit, and it actually is set up like a "rebus", one piece of art leads to another.  It made me laugh out loud while I was walking through it.

I really enjoyed it. I must say it was full of surprises. Because before the show aired i thought that bob needed to go (even though i like him a lot as a person i like sugar and matty more). But i thought susie/crystal/kenny were a team and i thought that sugar/matty were a team. Little did i know that sugar thought that sugar/crystal/kenny were a team. There really was an awful lot last night that surprised me. Since matty got so mad at kenny i really for the life of me cannot understand why kenny would tell crystal to cross bob. That is the dumbest thing i've ever seen. I really do not think bob would have turned on kenny/crystal. So kenny basically lost crystal the game. I was also surprised that sugar went and told bob. Although i'm happy he did not use his idol. I loved loved how sugar wore her necklace to tribal and i was shocked she handed it to matty. The editing did not let that one out of the bag. Very good how she went on before about only using it herself.  I was really happy that the promos did not give away the twist tonight (like they did the past 2 weeks). Here is one interesting tidbit. On Global tv where i watch they have these "hmmmm tidbits" and last night they said that when matty was 18 he inherited a lot of money (they did not say how much). Yep, back to work for me today dealing with the Blu-ray of THE WOMEN. I hate to have preconceived notions about the movie before I actually watch it, but I just can't see this working in an updated form. Society is SO different from 1936 when the play first hit the stage, and trying to update it to today just seems ill-advised. We'll see.

Hey everyone, Vixter here.
I have found out how serious cancer really is yesterday, as mom has been hurling on and off, and it's really rather frightening ( if you read this mom, I'm sorry, it really is) and I 'm getting more then a little freaked out that all she seems to do when I'm in the same room as her is say how I'm too young to have to go through this. I'm sorry, but, I'm not the one with cancer!!!! I'm scared, because it just doesn't seem like it's her, you know? She seems like a totally different person, and this is only the first week of chemo. I'm really worried, and I know you're all supporting her, so it makes a little better, but I don't know what to do, because nothing going to stop the pain that she's in right now. And that's why I'm very sad today.

On the lighter sid eof the news, I just found out this might be the only cool site that hasn't been blocked in my school...oh great, now they're gonna block it. Love you all,

Friday morning greetings!  I called in sick today, in order to look after Richard.

POTENTIAL TMI:

On Tuesday he had a podiatrist excise an ingrown nail and by last night his right big toe looked like Rudolph's nose - sure sign of infection.  He called the doctor, who called in a prescription for an antibiotic and who wants to see him today.  With my blurry eyes and his enflamed toe, we made quite a pair going out to Walgreen's last night.  It didn't take much for me to decide to stay home today - I've already been to the post office and the bakery and fixed a lovely bacon & egg breakfast for us.

Dlkkj fjkl alkj ljj lj;lk jafjfsjk a;lkj ;lg;lkajg;lkj j ag;lkjagl;k asdg;kl jkasg;lkj ag I think, DR Jennifer, that it's what we DON'T see every week that sometimes confuses us when certain things happen.  From past weeks' shows, I do know that Matty thought he was tight with both Kenny and Crystal.  They had an earlier plan to oust "the others", including Bob.  Sugar, also, was approached by Kenny to go "in" with him and Crystal.   She agreed.   I think the most telling moment last night -- and Crystal certainly commented on it during her exit comments after tribal council -- was when Crystal tried to turn things around on Matty and yelled at him as if he'd done something against their alliance.  Sugar saw this and it bothered her deeply.  Matty was very confused and suddenly realized he had no friends in the camp.  Earlier, he had approached Sugar and she let him know his time was up...that she was voting with Kenny and Crystal.  But Crystal's tactics showed Sugar that what Matty had told her about Kenny and Crystal was true -- that only "they" were allied and the rest of them were expendable.

When Sugar went to Matty and told him she suddenly believed what he had told her made Sugar my NUMBER ONE SURVIVOR PLAYER OF ALL TIME.  She's smart, she's sweet, she plays the game, but she's all about being "fair."  Crystal and Kenny avoided telling Matty that he was too big a threat for them not to target him by trying to make him believe he had done something wrong.  That hurt Sugar's soul.

When she learned they'd changed their minds and decided to target Bob based on Bob's promise to Kenny about giving up the immunity necklace if he won it, she knew it was up to her to take things into her own hands.  Kenny was stupid to have changed the conditions about the necklace.   Bob had promised to simply give it to Kenny, but Kenny decided he wouldn't take it outright...that he'd "play" with Bob as to whether or not he'd ask for it.  To me, that was the warning sign Bob needed.  After Sugar told him not to give the necklace up and to join her in targeting Crystal, I could feel momentum shift dramatically.  When she promised Matty he would NOT be going home that night, I had a passing thought that she might consider giving him her necklace.

I admire her for going to Bob and telling him the truth.  I admire Bob, too.  He's the one person in that camp who might have gone home weeks ago except that Bob is smart, smart, smart and has proved himself capable of keeping up with the younger ones.  It doesn't hurt his case that the immunity challenges have been as much "mental" as they are physical.  In fact, I haven't seen anything that required much endurance from anyone in a long time.

I loved seeing Kenny during tribal in full realization that he was no longer "calling the shots" -- that he and Crystal could NOT go further.  I hope he's smart enough to realize that he has himself to blame.  That "cover story" he was giving Jeff about why he thought he was on the block last night was more true than it was fabricated.  It occurred to me that there could be a 3-3- split of the votes.  When Sugar handed that necklace to Matty, it all fell into place.  You could see the truth of it all in Crystal's and Kenny's eyes, too.  (Final vote was 4-2 against Crystal.  Susie joined Bob, Sugar and Matty.  Interesting!)

My only disappointment is that they didn't get rid of Kenny instead of Crystal.  Kenny "was" the brains behind all that has happened the past four or five weeks.  Crystal is a follower.    Watch out, however, for Susie.  She's way too "invisible" at this point and that's dangerous.

On an "Oh, gross!" note!  Randy continues to be a moron.  This time, his "Mohawk" haircut only serves to make him look like a bigger fool than he's proven himself to be time and again.  Dkfjfjkjklfjklfk j;lkj ;lkajgkj agjk g jka;lkjaskjlaslk jasf;lkjl;jk saf;lkja sdf;lkj a;slkfj;lk jasf;lkjasd;lfkjl kdjf ;lkjdsafljkasdf;lkj ;lasdfj.

Where did 1966 come from? I don't get the reference to that year in particular.

It was nothing more than a personal frame of reference -- in a free association kinda way -- to a more recent time...teens were still being subjected to societal perceptions of the Eisenhower years during which many here were brought up.  Even though the Beatles had recently made major impacts on music and "hair", society was perceived to be a certain way in 1966 (at least by me) and it underwent dramatic changes in the following years.

And it has changed (much for the worse, IMO) since then, too.

Your mom's comment means she is sorry that you are having to go through this at your age.  She means that she sees herself as the one who should be looking after you.  She doesn't want you to have to look after her.  Not at this stage of your, or her, life.

Cancer is serious business, Vixter.  But it's the treatment that really scares people because it's a means of fighting destructive cells in the body with a treatment that destroys productive cells in the body.

Let your mom hurl all she needs to.  And don't be scared.  It's a necessary side effect to a treatment meant to get her well.

If you've ever meditated, I suggest you take some personal time to simply sit and clear your mind.  Still your fears.  You have a support group.

Society is so different today than what it was in 1966, too!  ;)

Where did 1966 come from? I don't get the reference to that year in particular.

It was nothing more than a personal frame of reference to a more recent time...teens were still being subjected to societal perceptions of the Eisenhower years during which many here were brought up.  Even though the Beatles had recently made major impacts on music and "hair", society was perceived to be a certain way in 1966 (at least by me) and it underwent dramatic changes in the following years.

And it has changed (much for the worse, IMO) since then, too.

I was born in 1966. ;D

You had to rub it in, didn't you???  ;)

Why, yes I did! :-*

Just did a calorie check for an In n Out cheeseburger - not too bad - about 480, but the fat grams are high at 27.  But, that's what I'll be having for lunch.  No fries, though - those are 400, which isn't a problem, but also VERY high in fat grams, so I'll just do the cheeseburger, then have something later, maybe a sandwich and some fruit.

DR Ginny, tell Richard I'm sorry about his toe. In the 1970s I had one so badly infected that they had to remove the nail.  My only memory now, beyond the pain, is soaking my toe after the surgery in salts every couple of hours.

DR vixter, your mother is lucky to have such a wonderful daughter! When my Aunt Dorothy was going through chemo in the early 1990s, she would tell me I could call her any time but the day after the treatment because she would be really ill. My dad had similar reactions to his chemo treatments, so I wish DR vixmom the best and send my love to you, her, and vixdad.

Here are some vibes before I head off to physical therapy!

DR the vixter - It's all right to be scared. I was scared a couple of weeks ago when my Mom had her surgery, and there are still moments when I'm still scared.

It's all right to be scared, to be frightened. It's natural. It just means that you Love your mother, and you want her to get better sooner rather than later. There was a quote from Einstein I came across yesterday in one of the exhibitions. It went something along the lines of: Time exists so that everything does not happen all at once. (My apologies for not quoting that exactly.)

Your Mom will get better. And each day that she gets better is also a day that you get less scared. But it's also another day that you get to spend with your mother. And once she is no longer hurling, and once you are no longer scared, you will have nothing but better and brighter and hurl-free days to look forward to. -And you will be able to look back to "now", and know that there is nothing that you two - and the vixdad, of course - can't get through together.

I wish you and your Mom and Dad only the best. *And if you do happen to need anything, I'm pretty sure that my number is in your Mom's cellphone. :)

I know for a fact that when I "use" time rather than "waste" it, I feel a deep sense of satisfaction when I get things done that need doing.  That is far more rewarding than putting them all off until there's no way of getting them all done.

PUPPY MILL SURVIVORS
Capt. Jan Selder, supervisor of the East Valley Animal Care Center in Van Nuys, holding Jingle, left, a Maltese puppy, and Holly, a Yorkie puppy, leads fellow employees, holding other puppies at a news conference at the center Dec. 11. The puppies were intercepted at LAX with falsified health documentation in June. The puppy mill dogs arrived from Seoul and were confiscated by L.A. Animal Services and L.A. County Public Health officials. Federal law requires imported puppies under three months old to be quarantined until one month after they receive their rabies vaccination.

It was very sad at physical therapy, because it was my last session. My referral is up on Dec 30, and I'm out of town till then. When I asked my doctor about a January referral, he said we'd have to wait and see if it was needed. So, it's pretty much over and it's done my shoulder a world of good. I became quite close to the clients who showed up during the 1 pm hour when I was there and I wish them all well.

I'm waiting to hear from my friend Chris about tonight, but I've packed two cartons to drop off at Fed Ex tonight, and I'm putting together my list of things to take with me.

I spent most of the afternoon with the Blu-ray version of THE WOMEN. Diane English has taken the characters from the original and some of the basic Mary-Stephen-Crystal triangle plot, but completely tossed out the play's catty bitchfest dialog and situations. Instead, she's turned it into a pale, milquetoast women's empowerment story. I mean, that's fine if it's what you want to write about and direct, but why base it on THE WOMEN? Write your own story of a cheating husband and a wife who finds liberation when she's out on her own.

I found the comedy so tame and the drama weak. And you've got someone like Bette Midler in the role of "The Countess" and you do NOTHING with her. (She has two short scenes.) In fact, the cast is either wasted or miscast. Only Cloris Leachman and Candace Bergen deliver the goods.

I looked at the three bonus features on the disc, too. None were all that interesting. There's a making of featurette with Diane English discussing her rewrite of the story and her ideas for casting. There was a featurette featuring a 15 year old girl doing a report on "What is real beauty?" from the set of the movie interviewing cast and crew. And there were a couple of cut scenes. That's it.

Brasil '66 was born in 1965.  But I digress.

I just watched THE WOMEN on Blu a few days ago for review purposes, and I actually thought it might have worked rather well.  I was frankly shocked that English, certainly a fine writer for women, didn't do better with it.  I have gotten several emails from readers saying they LOL'd at my opening sentence of the review, which I'll let you ferret out if you see fit.

I have been *so* friggin' busy it's been hard to drop by for even a mo', so let me just say:

WE LOVE YOU VIXMOM, OH YES WE DO!!
WE LOVE YOU VIXMOM, AND VIXTER, TOO!

Hello all.  I've been kinda MIA this week.  My mother-in-law has been staying with us, taking care of Toby for the week.  I can't get online much when I have guests in the house.  I have been managing to keep lurking and reading, though.  I send great vibes to the Vixter and her family.  I helped take care of my grandmother when I was nine.  Her cancer was much more serious, melanoma that she'd been battling for years.  But I remember the feeling of helplessness and seeing her turn into a shadow of the woman I knew.  It goes get better, and I know Vixter is strong enough to get through this.

Vibes for anyone else who needs them too.

And a BIG congrats to CIlla for the weight loss.  20 lbs is about what I need to lose to get back to my pre-pregnancy/wedding day weight.  I'm taking it slow during the month of December, but as soon as my gym membership kicks back in in January, I will be kicking it up and trying to get those pounds off.  They say that if you don't lose baby weight in the first 6 months after having the baby, it often doesn't come off at all, so I only have three more months left!

In other news, our HIGH temp on Monday is predicted to be 28 degrees.  That is unheard of in Western Washington!

DR MattH, you have my sympathy. From the tv commercials, I thought this had "must miss" all over it.

Sort of like everything Meg Ryan has done since she had her affair on the set of a movie with Russell Crowe.  Everything she's done since then has been subpar.

Listening to Elmer Bernstein's funk score to Report To The Commissioner.  I won't say that this genre is a good fit for him, but it's enjoyable nonetheless.  For funk, Lalo Schifrin is much better at that game.

It seems DR Pulliam has snuck a book into our Jessica's Biscuit delivery.

An entire tome on the fare from a South Carolina restaurant called The Old Post Office on Edisto Island:

"Oyster Skillet, Shrimp and Grits, Cracklin' Roast Duck, Sweet Corn Dumplings and Aunt Mae's Lemon Pie

der Brucer

The pie has a cornflake crust - and there is a recipe for Coca Cola Cake

I don't think I've ever had "creamy grits".

And it seems Josè also had a hand in the book delivery:

The Complete Book of Pork opened right up to "Filipino Pork Adobo".

The recipe innocently calls for "Asian Fish Sauce" - which those of us with Nam experience know as nuoc mam - dead fish rendered in salt in a hole in the ground until properly "ripe".

Love you all,
                                                                                             The Vixter

Hugs to you Vixter.  You and  your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I was born in 1966. ;D

And there it is!   Let's blame George!

I know I'm not the youngest person (nor the oldest) on this board, but a couple of weeks ago, I found out that I'm the oldest person in the cast of Reefer Madness...by several years!  I've never before been the oldest person for anything that I've ever done! :-\

Get used to it :)   I used to always be the youngest, now I rarely am.

Do they have a kid's meal?  Usually those are a good portion calorie wise

For my favorites I know the spelling...although there is no set transliteration between Hindi devangari alphabet and English, so some names you will see in a variety of ways...for instance, Dharmendra will at times be spelled out as Dharminder and Jeetendra will sometimes be seen as Jitendra.

He told kenny that he would give him the idol if he thought he was going. And since bob knew kenny was not going he did not give him the necklace. Even though kenny turned on bob, i really don't think bob would have written down kenny's name.

Spent a lot of time on the phone with a helpful Apple Care person.  She had me do several things, including permissions repair and disk repair, as well as run a diagnostic, which takes over an hour and which I'm currently doing.  We also pulled the battery and did a reset, so hopefully all that will help.  She also told me how to tell if some software program is running erratically and at too high a CPU percentage, so I'll check that later.  I'm on laptop II right now.

Back on my regular computer - fan is not running, so maybe we fixed it with the permissions and/or disk repair or maybe the reset.  Looked at the CPU thing and everything seems to be running okay, although I may call back in the morning and let them talk me through that, to make sure I'm looking at the right things.  The diagnostic found no problems, so that's good.

Always a joy to see it again, but I'd enjoy it even more with a fresh, new Vistavision transfer on Blu-ray. That would absolutely make my day!

Chris and I saw AVENUE Q this evening; we couldn't decide on a film so we met at TKTS and got half price tickets. Neither of us had seen it, although I had really wanted to go when my friend Ann Harada was still with the original cast. Suddenly Ann was off to other things and I never got to it. We both had a great time.

And now to bed.

Next, I watched THE BELLS OF ST. MARY'S. I love this film, and it was nice to see it again, the first time upconverted, I believe. Though this transfer is several years old, it mostly looked very good. I was pleased overall with its quality.

Next I finally got around to the last Bette Davis film in the latest Warner set of her films - IN THIS OUR LIFE. It's not a very good film, and Bette is not very good in it; very mannered amid a sea of naturalistic actors which makes her overemoting and clipped delivery even more false. It's probably my least favorite performance of hers while at Warners, at least during her star years.

The transfer was acceptable: grainier than I was expecting and some scratches on and off through the movie. Still, it looked OK.

I guess tomorrow I'll work on GHOST TOWN. I like Ricky Gervais, so I'm hoping this will be a good time. After the disappointment of THE WOMEN, I'd love to see a really good, very droll comedy. Hopefully, this will fill the bill.

So, in short...

I liked the movie of "Doubt", but I (still) prefer the play, Doubt.  -Although, I think I already said that.  However...

I did read the review in The Times after I saw the movie, and I was sort of surprised to see that I totally agreed with Manohla Dargis.  So, just The Times website if you'd like to know a bit more about what I thought of the movie.  ;)

And I did end up seeing another movie today after all, "The Reader".

A good movie. Alas, I was hoping for a "weepie", but I don't think I even teared up.  Again, a good movie, but I felt like it would have worked better with subtitles rather than having everyone speaking in heavily German-accented English.

*And, again, another movie almost ruined by "too much information" presented in the trailer and commercials. :-\

Just watched a fantastic French film from 2005 called L'Equipier, about which much more in the notes.  It is a film I shall return to in the near future.

In between movies, I did some window-shopping, shopping, and, of course, eating and knoshing.

*Which included a long overdue return trip to Levain.  It truly has been months since I've had one of their still-warm Chocolate Chip Walnut cookies.  :)

Now I've begun Hitler: The Last Ten Days, starring Alec Guiness - it looks very interesting.  There seems to be some confusion about the aspect ratio - listed as scope on the imdb - the DVD is regular widescreen and I see no framing issues whatsover - there is a Panavision credit on the film, but I really think it's a Panavision equipment credit that's been erroneously reported as Scope.

Well tomorrow is the big day.  I will unpack the saws, set them up in the garage, clean out "the room" downstairs, lay the moisture barrier (actually a sheet of plastic) and put in the floor.  Tomorrow is going to be in the 40s so it will be fairly warm in the garage and I can cut the laminate out there.   After tomorrow, it's going to get cold for the foreseeable future, so ....

I'm a little nervous about this...but I'm also very excited

GOOD LUCK!  I hope you are very pleased with the results.  I'll be watching for a photo.

Thanks!  I will take photos when I get it all done. I'm not totally sure I picked the right flooring, but I'm sure it will look fine.  Just a little last minute uncertainty...I hope.

I know that feeling.  Once you start are you committed or can you pull it out & get something else.  I've done that with wallpaper & paint, never a floor.

I just went downstairs and realized that although the floor is smooth, it doesn't appear to be level. And I laid down one of the pieces of floor only to realize that the walls aren't evern square.

So, I think I'm going to put this on hold until I can find more info on this.  I've read about it online and am not real comfortable with what I'm reading.  So, I've got to go back to Home depot and talk to someone before I open any more boxes.  I don't think I can return an open box, but I've only opened one.  I'm considering going ahead and getting it installed. I'd have to wait a month or 6 weeks, but I'm beginning to think that in this room, I may have more problems than it's worth.

So, I'll go to the store first thing in the morning. I also haven't opened the table saw, so if I'm not going to do this I can return that.  I can do anything else I need with the mitre saw.

I'm not chickening out. I just realized how many problems that room may have and I'm thinking that I'd rather have an installer deal with them.

I'm not sold on the pattern either.  So, I may be returning what I bought and getting one of the floors that looks like wood and paying for installation.  It's a cop out in a way, but I think it also may be the right thing to do.  As my mother said..."you have all year to finish that room...heck, you have all your life to do it, so what's the hurry?"

Well, I was planning on seeing another movie or two this afternoon, but since the sun is out, the sky is blue, and the air is crisp, I think I'm just going to forego more "inside" time for now, and just see where the day - and my feet - take me.

And was it awfully cold at the reservoir, Jose?

Not really.

That means I'll get the exercise of carrying it all up the stairs and loading up my car.  I'm actually considering a vinyl floor for that room.  I'm not particularly fond of vinyl floors, but with an uneven floor and walls that aren't really straight, I'm thinking that it may be the easiest. I can always cover it with an area rug....

Oh bother, I'm back where I started.  Better now than after I started cutting and putting the floor in.   I'll take another look in the morning. It may not be as big a problem as I think it is.

Perhaps tonight will be the night to watch DOSTI: FRIENDS FOREVER, DR Matth!

I just know you will love that hunky, hairy Akshay Kumar!

Mike, when you list one of your favorite Indian actors, do you know the spelling, or do you have to look them up?

(I had to look up the spelling of Van Johnson)

I suspect that DR MBarnum looks them up whether or not he needs to check how their names are spelled.  ;)

And it seems Josè also had a hand in the book delivery:

The Complete Book of Pork opened right up to "Filipino Pork Adobo".

The recipe innocently calls for "Asian Fish Sauce" - which those of us with Nam experience know as nuoc mam - dead fish rendered in salt in a hole in the ground until properly "ripe".

der Brucer

Hmmm... "Real" adobo should not call for fish sauce - which, in this case, would be patis.  However, if you can find the proper "black vinegar", that makes all the difference.  Otherwise, the recipe should just call for chicken, vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, onions, black pepper and a bay leaf.  -And, sometimes, oregano.  And, maybe patis on the side, but usually there's enough "sauce" in the pan to be sopped up by the rice.

I'm back from the easiest and quickest long jog ever.  Maybe I'll start switching it up, doing half the week in the morning and the other half at three-thirty.

I remember being very surprised the first time I did an afternoon jog.  After reading and hearing about how one should exercise first thing in the morning, well...  I was amazed at how "easy" it was, and also how much more efficient I was with my running stride.  I know a big part of the "ease" had to do with the fact that I had more food - energy - in my system in the afternoon, but it also helped me to be more mentally awake too.

I just finished watching EAGLE EYE.

It's sort of a cross between NORTH BY NORTHWEST, 2001: A SPACE ODDYSEY and THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH...but it was entertaining and it had an interesting twist.

I just wish that the chase scenes were shorter, because they got very boring.
