Title: IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS
Post by: bk on December 18, 2008, 12:24:04 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're suddenly being all Jewish and refuse to have anything to do with Christmas.

Thanks for all the suggestions yesterday about the Ipod.

It was very strange what had happened.

Like I said yesterday all the songs from Bye Bye Birdie (TV Cast) and all the songs sung by Lynette Perry (from various cds) are still on my Ipod but have disappeared from the computer.

Why Lynnette & Birdie I do not know.

I think it will be just easier to locate the cds and put them back on the PC.

Thanks for the help.

Good morning, all! This will be brief.

JoAnn's computer has crashed again after she spent all day yesterday working on it. It's days like this I regret not having a laptop, so I'm on Randy's computer for a minute. I probably will not catch up till the end of the day so please forgive me.

Happy birthday wishes to DRs PennyO and DantheMan, both excellent folk!

I'll post later from either here or the public library. I've lots to attend to today.

And Michael Shayne's problems are exactly the reason why I never have and never will transfer all my CDs to my computer hard drive and then pack the CDs away. It's not that I can't figure out the technical stuff, it's the idea that if something crashes I have to restore it and it has to be backed up on at least one other drive somewhere and I have too many freakin' CDs to take the time to transfer them all to my computer. A friend keeps saying, get an ipod, it will change your life. No, I don't think so. I like my life the way it is. I'm all for technological advances, I just don't want to take part in every single one of them.

Has anybody on this Forum ever dealt with (or know of) a RELIABLE service that moves pets across country?  Preferably by car, but we will consider flying them under the right circumstances.

As many of you know, we're moving from Los Angeles to Austin, TX in late March and, if possible, I would like to avoid driving the animals (2 dogs/1 cat) for the 4-5 days it will take to get there.

In fact, I'd like to avoid the drive altogether.  We're planning to ship our cars back there and fly.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Another warm day in the 60s, and the clouds are going to clear away for a couple of days before we get rain again over the weekend. I am really tired of the damp weather even though the rain has been light.

DR Druxy, I'm not a fan of flying pets in cargo.  People do it all the time.  I would want the biggest plane possible with a one way flight.  At least the cat can go on the plane with you.  That is one pet down.  I'm trying to remember your dogs.  Can either fit under the seat?

There are services that arrange to ship your pets.  They cost about twice what you will spend to do it yourself.  I'm not sure I would trust someone to drive my dogs & especially my cat, and not lose them.  I would have to check the service, & the individual person, very carefully.

When DS Craig flew from Romania to the states with DD Yogie I did find a service that would let him ride from NY to Pittsburgh with the dog.  They would have taken the dog alone.  Instead I picked them both up in DC & drove them to Pittsburgh.  I don't remember the company.  I found them on-line while searching.  I must have called about 5 different services.  I can help you look if you like, just not until the family leaves on the 26th.  Feel free to email me with questions.

DR Jose, just posting late more than up late.  I was on my way to bed after letting Sherlock out & checking the weather report, so far no snow here but it is all around us for the next three days.  We are very nervous as these would be the worst 3 days of the year for us to have snow.  Depending where you are there might be 3-10 inches of snow.

Of course as I type “no snow”, snow flurries begin.

I'm up a little earlier than usual.  Actually, I was up at seven-fifteen, but I got back in bed until the house warmed up a little.  I don't keep the heat on overnight, and the house is usually around sixty-three when I get up - too cold for the likes of me.

Once again, predictions of snow--nada.  School is two hours delayed in any case.

I'm very happy--sold a big stack of DVDs/BDs/HD-DVDs, plus my Samsung BD-UP5000, on Craig's List yesterday, to the same guy who has bought all my other stacks of discs.  I'm not sure if he is an eBay seller, but frankly, I don't care.  He doesn't haggle with me over the price and he takes everything I have.  So I now have a wad of extra holiday cash (the title of my next musical).

Very very severe icy weather is predicted for later tonight here.  I had a sliding sideways experience in the parking lot of the Dollar General Store where I went to buy some Diet Pepsi 2 liters (always only $1.15).....whew!

Later today I'm headed up to Ventura with the Chuckster (yep, he drove in from Arizona yesterday!) to visit with some old friends - Neil and Kathy - who are playing a Peter Pan (I think it's Peter Pan...) with incidental music by Leonard Bernstein. I met Neil my first day at Juilliard, back in Sept. 1972. He's a bass player - currently plays a lotta movie scores. Kathy also was at Juilliard, became a tenured horn player at New York City Opera for years and years, until she busted outa there. They came up and played our first Chaspen concert, Beethoven 5, in January 1992. Ah, memories! Ah, old friends!

I've got a Norfolk Terrier & a Border Collie.

I really don't want to fly them in cargo.  If possible, I'd like to find a service that drives them.

Is the Norfolk small enough for a plane ride?  Though I expect if you find a driver for one it might be nicer to have company.  I suggest going on line and calling different places, just to get a feel for what they do.  Save the ones you like the best.

Do you have a really good pet sitter that might be willing to drive them?

Well in the time-honored Portland tradition of absolute chaos, they have just cancelled school.  Unfortunately, a lot of kids are already on the bus en route, which means they will be dropped off at school while the school attempts to contact the parents.  These stupid school administrators do the same damned thing every frigging year.  You'd think they would have learned by now.

Good Afternoon!

The short version (a.k.a. The iPhone version):

The tour started at 10:00.
We entered the offices of the Food Network, and went right to the test kitchens. They were in the middle of a Holiday Cookie Making and Baking Party. -And someone else was frying up some bacon.
We went into Studio B, home of "The Next Food Network Star" eliminations.
We went into Studio A. Tyler Florence was taping today, he was making Jambalaya. It smelled good, and he came over to say HI and shake everyone's hands. :)
Then we went into two post-production offices, editing and audio. Very cool.
Then we filled out surveys and had a great Q&A with Joe, our tour guide, who is one of the scheduling studio managers.
The tour finished at 11:30. The tour was only scheduled to run 45 minutes, so we all ended up getting basically a double tour. And Tyler Florence.

:)

Back from the long jog - as guilty as I felt not doing it for the last two days, it was probably a good thing - the jog was nice 'n' easy, and it's a beautiful sunny day - unfortunately, the temperature seemed to be in the 50s when I started it, but by the time I got back it seemed to have gone up about ten degrees.

MR BK - that Jukebox Jive number that Ronald Stein composed for Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, and re-used in a couple of movies as car radio music....

It starts at the beginning of the scene when Yvette Vickers is dancing with Frank Chase....it continues as William Hudson enters and the two of them have a conversation....and it ends EXACTLY as the scene fades out.....I think it's one of his best little numbers....a couple of saxophones, drums, and a piano.....would he have timed that to a copy of the scene....or did he just know exactly how long it was supposed to be.

It's been one of my favorite tracks since I first saw the movie over 40 years ago and thanks again for putting it on the CD...along with the rest of the AOTFFW score....

I think their mindset is that the parents may have gotten the kids on the buses and then left for work themselves, so they need to make sure someone's home for the kids before sending them back.  It's ridiculous--this happens at least once a school year here.

However, I will say, now it's really snowing--like, big flake, Utah type snow with actual accumulations.  We've probably had 2 inches in the last half hour, which is a lot for PDX.

I really don't want to fly them in cargo.  If possible, I'd like to find a service that drives them.

Well, AA is the only airline that flies non-stop, and they would charge you $150 for the cat-in-cabin and $300 for the two dogs in the hold.

Also, there is no guarantee the dogs would fly with you - they wouldn't board the animals if the ground temperature at either airport is below 46degrees (as it can be in Austin).

So, any service that charges you about $500 is a deal. (You need to find two LA college kids with relatives in Austin).

There used to be (a few years ago, I don't remember exactly how many) an S&M (yes, that's  the euphemism) restaurant on 23rd Street and 7th Avenue. It's been gone for a few years now. They closed down and as far as I know they never moved into the Village. That could be the place Sing means.

Vibes DR DerBrucer son-in-law makes it home safely today.!

Thank - he just pulled into his drive on the Maryland Eastern shore (Chestertown area).

He lost a great deal of time thanks to the Virgina state police who profiled him as a drug-runner! They first pulled him over because he had tinted windows and then asked for permission to search the truck and the trailer (an 8x12 foot enclosed beast - fully loaded with household goods). He rufused, so they sent him on his way. A short time later, they pullled him over again - and this time they had a dog which they claim "alerted" so they unloaded all his stuff by the side of the road.

I haven't heard the rest of the story - but he was not cited for anything. That the truck and trailer had temporary tags probably didn't help.

He is really pissed - having survived all the weather problems to then have his journey derailed just a few hour from home.

At this point, Anne has lost her last possible hope for holding Henry's affections via a male child, and Henry has set his sight on Jane Seymour. All that's left is digging up a case against Anne and off with the heads of her "suitors," her brother, and Anne herself.

A Blu-Ray disck question:

The Black Night (Disk one) loads, displays the WB logo, Displats the PG-13 Rating - goes into laso mode agin, screen goes blank and then a animated icon od a spinng CD with a red radius line appears - FOREVER.

I assume the disk is faulty - am I missing anything?

Despite the confusion, I would like to have an IPod for when I go to the gym, so that I don't have to listen to the grunge rock they sometimes play (occasionally some "fitness expert" will tune into the disco station, but not often).

He is really pissed - having survived all the weather problems to then have his journey derailed just a few hour from home.

der Brucer

Poor guy!  I'm glad he is safely home.

That spinning disc means the player is loading BD-Java content. It shouldn't spin forever, however. Which Blu-ray player do you have? Is your BD player connected to the internet (loading BD-Live content takes even longer)?

And I'm assuming you mean THE DARK KNIGHT.

My hunch is you need a firmware upgrade.   If your BD player is not connected internet, go to the manufacturer's site and look for downloads.  Burn an ISO image of the firmware upgrade to a CD-R and then insert it in your player and it will upgrade automatically.  My new Sony, which was manufactured in November 2008 was already out of date, firmware wise, and wouldn't play newer discs until I upgraded.

I have noticed a weird anomaly on this Sony, and only on newer BDs (like stuff that has just streeted)--it goes through the load process twice, i.e., I get the Sony load bar, then the disc load icon, and then the whole megillah starts over again.  Older discs load immediately.  I must say this is one thing I much preferred about HD-DVDs--they simply started right up without a wait.

Yes, DARK NIGHT.

The player is a Memorex  the users's guide lists no model number from the front of the machine says DN191H (The box says Memorex but the unit has an LG logo). It is not connected to the internet. Other BD s have loaded ok - slow, but loaded. Disk 2 for BLACK NIGHT works.

People are telling me that there are "pet friendly" airlines that put put the animals in climate, pressure contolled areas.  One of them I talked to is even home based in Austin.

I'm also told that an animal will do better in a 3-hour flight than in a 3-4 day drive.

I will keep investigating.

Thanks.

Well, Ina is in the Hamptons, Paula is back in Savannah, and Tyler is in San Francisco. However, there are rumors that Dave Liberman is around today. Although, with my luck, I'll end up with Gordon Ramsay.

Gordon Ramsay is a fixture on the Fox Network, not the Food Network!  *tsk tsk tsk*

On the other hand, if you were to plant one on Gordon ELLIOTT, whose Follow Productions is behind Paula and her boys, plus the Neeleys, you would be connecting with a star-maker.  Just be warned - he's taller than I am!

What a small, small world.  I was unfamiliar with Chaspen, but didn't want to show my ignorance, so I Googled it.  The very first reference that I could open, started with this paragraph:

Quote
“The Frog Prince” is composer Christopher Lee Fraley’s second commission for Chaspen and his second collaboration with librettist Penny Orloff.  Their first, “Red Riding Hood,” played at last year’s Redmond Children’s Playhouse.  A former cellist, Fraley’s compositions include string quartets, chamber ensembles and symphonic works, as well as song settings of his own poetry.

Wow!

Has anybody on this Forum ever dealt with (or know of) a RELIABLE service that moves pets across country?  Preferably by car, but we will consider flying them under the right circumstances.

As many of you know, we're moving from Los Angeles to Austin, TX in late March and, if possible, I would like to avoid driving the animals (2 dogs/1 cat) for the 4-5 days it will take to get there. ...

Sorry.  The only experience I've had in moves like that was when der B and I moved here to Delaware... with five dogs in the car.

I gotta tell you.  AOL is behaving worse than ever - it is literally booting me off every five minutes.  Can't change screen names, if I open an e-mail and respond it boots off, and I've had it.  I just have to figure out if I keep just AOL e-mail how I don't lose everything in my filing cabinet, because when I go to aol.com I don't see any place where that exists, all those saved e-mails.  If I make this decision, it's very complicated as I have to change the Kritzerland site forwarding e-mail, I have to let everyone know it's happening, and I have to then set up two new g-mail accounts, which I don't really know how to do.  What a pain in the arse this is, but I can take no more.

Hmm... I know I've dined at "M&S" before - McCormick & Schmick's, but I don't think they have an outpost in the West Village - but I'm not too sure about S&M.  Hmmm...

Although, I still do miss Pot Belly's on Bleecker.  Sometimes the crowd there was, well...  But the baked egg dishes at brunch were always tasty!

There used to be (a few years ago, I don't remember exactly how many) an S&M (yes, that's  the euphemism) restaurant on 23rd Street and 7th Avenue. It's been gone for a few years now. They closed down and as far as I know they never moved into the Village. That could be the place Sing means.

I had some friends from Des Moines who dined there when they were at a meeting in New York.  They enjoyed it....I didn't ask for details ;)

He is really pissed - having survived all the weather problems to then have his journey derailed just a few hour from home.

der Brucer

Knowing how cops search vehicles and trailers, I really feel sorry for him.

When I moved back to Iowa from Arizona I had a cat who HATED the car.   I just got him a huge carrier and got a mild sedative from the vet.  He would be awake in the motel room at night and slept in the car.  His carrier was big enough that he could move around if he wanted to.   That's my only experience.  He was fine. It was a 3 1/2 day drive as I recall

Our annual trip to Spartanburg SC is history.  We left around 8:30 a.m. and drove north to my cousin Dot's (Dorothy's) house.  Dot is 5 years older than my mom and is the daughter of one of my maternal grandfather's sisters.  We all had lunch at Wade's, a restaurant that fixes REALLY GOOD food in a "homestyle" way.  My mom, aunt and I had turkey and dressing with two side veggies (I chose turnips and black-eyed peas).  Dot had a 1/4-fried chicken (dark meat).

We then went to the cemetery where the annual squabble erupted over just "where" the first set of stones were (right where they always are!), with mom remembering one thing, my aunt remembering another and Dot saying my mom and aunt were both right and that we just needed to keep our eyes open (level head on Dot!).

After taking Dot home, we went to a mall where there is a CostCo.  I arranged for my mom to have a card on my membership and we all went in and shopped.  The primary goal was to get my mom a TV for her kitchen and it was to be an HDTV!  We settled (with thanks to a DR who has vast knowledge on such matters and offers his advice when requested -- DR MattH) on a Samsung 22-inch LCD.

Once home, it was a snap to set it up and get it going.  We went through the menu and selected settings my mom "thinks" looked okay to her (she can mess with it later IF she will).  Sadly, she gets no HDTV transmissions yet and we could not explore that aspect of the set.

At any rate, it was a nice day, a bit of a tiring day and a day I'm glad is winding down.

DR Jose:  Having caught up on yesterday, I noted your query regarding this season's "weight losses" on "The Biggest Loser."  IMO, they contestants did NOT seem to lose as much weight as in past seasons in an equal amount of time.

Then again, there were more "really big" contestants and it may be the doctor(s) wanted less radical workouts than in previous seasons in order to avoid injuries or too-rapid-weight-loss.

The drama, of course, came with the final show.  In seasons past, we've had an extra show in there dedicated to the training each of the finalists was doing at home.  This season, we went from final ranch weigh-in to final show weigh-in in one week.  That was a bit breathless, IMO, but I'm glad it's over.

I'm also a bit skeeved that the next round will be yet ANOTHER couples competition.  I don't like the "couples" version as well as the individual.  I don't like the dynamics of such wannabe power couples as Heba and Ed and Vicky and Brady.

But....I takes what I can gets.

Knowing how cops search vehicles and trailers, I really feel sorry for him.

You got that right! The loaded he entire trailer onto the side of the road (breaking some things in the process), took his spare tire to a mechanic to have it pulled from its rim to check for dope. When they were done, and had found nothing, they just left the whole trailer full of stuff on the roadside and left - no paper work to document the stop! And idiot SIL didn't even take badge numbers - or cell-phone photos!

Well, for all our grousing about driving cross country with five dogs, they could not have behaved better. They loved the ride, enjoyed the Motels, always "held it in" until walks could be arranged. They would wait patiently in the car when we ate in restaurants. They were delighted to be walked about the parks and enjoyed meeting other people and other dogs.

Ther're better behaved in the car than in the house.

Your problem may well be weather related and not the fault of AOL.

Your filing cabinet is stored on your computer hard-drive.  You can access filed messages using the AOL software on your computer - you do not need an AOL account.

Oh, my gosh!

Thank you one and all and all and one for the wonderful birthday wishes!  I've had myself a pretty exhausting day searching every Home Depot within a thirty mile radius for a Mission style table lamp my sister saw on the store's website.  At each Home Depot, I would show a clerk the print out I made of the web page featuring the lamp and ask if they had it in stock and the answer was always "no".  Of course, it wasn't until I was at the fifth store that a clerk pointed out to me on the page where it stated "Available Online Only".

While shopping at Target, I spotted a number of Wii's being unloaded on the floor, so I bought one as a birthday gift to myself.  They also had the very-hard-to-get Mario Kart game, which I also bought.  I feel kind of guilty for buying something that pricey for myself at this time of year.  But a friend has already assured me that the guilt will go out the window once I start playing with the thing.

That spinning disc means the player is loading BD-Java content. It shouldn't spin forever, however. Which Blu-ray player do you have? Is your BD player connected to the internet (loading BD-Live content takes even longer)?

And I'm assuming you mean THE DARK KNIGHT.

Yes, DARK NIGHT.

The player is a Memorex  the users's guide lists no model number from the front of the machine says DN191H (The box says Memorex but the unit has an LG logo). It is not connected to the internet. Other BD s have loaded ok - slow, but loaded. Disk 2 for BLACK NIGHT works.

der Brucer

Go to the AVS website and to the Funai/Memorex Blu-ray users group. (Funai, I believe makes Memorex, Sylvania, Magnavox, and Insignia players). See if others have had trouble loading THE DARK KNIGHT, disc 1. See if there is a firmware update for your player. (Some like the Samsung don't require a CD-R. The Samsung allows updates from a flash/thumb drive.) Some players take longer to load discs than others. Also, make sure the surface is the disc is thoroughly clean.

The dinner party was simply wonderful. I had three blue whales for cocktails. (This is the Windex-looking drink Emory mixes in BOYS IN THE BANDS). Dinner was delicious, and we had mandarine orange cake for dessert.

I also got some great DVDs I really wanted like the other two Hitchcock Legacy editions I didn't already have (PSYCHO, REAR WINDOW so I can now get rid of those inferion original editions), PETE KELLY'S BLUES, and others.

And wonderful conversation with three very close and dear friends I don't get to spend nearly enough time with.

The first half of Paul Groves' recital was amazing. The Britten cycle was exquisite!  I am one happy Music Geek and Music Lover!

I wish there were more recordings of Paul Groves out there. - well recordings of stuff that elderly "Austrian "pensioners would enjoy.  He is the reason I like the televised Candide and even cope with Patti in order to hear him.

I wish he was better represented on record too. -Especially since he's always singing something, somewhere.  But tonight...

WOW!

The opening Beethoven cycle was most definitely not just a "warm-up" for the Britten.  And the Britten cycle, well, I don't think I've "felt" an audience more enraptured and captivated by a performer.  Everyone seemed to be listening and truly paying attention.  It was nice to see that most of the audience members around me just sat back and listened, instead of burying their heads in the program translations.  His German diction was spot on, and his English was totally intelligible and communicative.

Then came the Fauré to start off the second half - the Francophile in me suddenly came to life again.  I'm so used to very "prim and proper" interpretations of French mélodies, but Mr. Groves rode that very fine line between a "recital" voice and an "opera house" voice, and managed the perfect balance.  I've never heard "La Bonne Chanson" sung so emotively and expressively.  And the closing Rachmaninov set, just when I thought things could not get better, well, they did.  And even his encores - another Rachmaninov and Duparc's sublime "Soupir" - which was dedicated to the memory of his Juilliard vocal coach - were sung as deeply as the rest of his program, they were not "throw-offs".

And I really do have to give "props" to his pianist, Pedja Muzijevic.  His playing in the Britten cycle was astonishing, and he managed to make some truly "thorny" music not at all prickly.  And in the Fauré and Rachmaninov, his contributions were equally as important and moving as his vocal partner.

Your AOL "filing cabinet" is always available offline.  Just mouse over your menu bar.  You'll see selections for "Saved Mail" - both received and sent messages.  -Or just click on "Help", and search for "Filing Cabinet".

Mouse over WHAT menu bar?  If I'm not on AOL, haven't launched AOL since I'm going to get rid of it at long last (unless someone can provide me with a specific news story that this constant getting booted off today and tonight is weather-related - I mean I can log on, but the minute I open an e-mail, read it, and then close it, AOL "quits" - it's happened seven times and I am done).  So, just which menu bar am I mousing over?  I've got a Safari menu bar and a Finder menu bar.

Start AOL, but don't log on.  -You must have it set to Log In automatically, I'm guessing.  AOL does operate "offline" - that's how you can compose e-mails offline, and then send them later.

Which version of AOL are you using? 9.0 for Mac? or the AOL Desktop?

bk - As for AOL's connectivity issues... It happens.  Even with programs other than AOL.  Just deal with it.  And breathe.

*And you can also set up the Mac's Mail client to "fetch" your AOL mail - like it does on the iPhone.  Then each time you get an email you want to save, you just drag it to the "Saved" folder - and you can even set up different folder for different types of correspondence.

**I'd really suggest just making a Genius Bar appointment, and having someone walk you through it... Since you don't believe in reading instructions.  ;)

Part Deux:

File -> Filing Cabinet
Mail -> Incoming/Saved Mail (which is kept in your "Filing Cabinet")

SO WHAT IS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not probably something you're going to want to make at home.  It involves three recipes of two pages each.

If it's a slow day at the office tomorrow, my holiday gift to HHW will be to re-type it and post it here.   :)

DR Druxy, is it hobnail milk glass or is it smooth?  There are many replacement sites online. Do you have any photos with the lamp in it?

I don't think we have any pictures.  There was some sort of raised pattern on it.  If you know of any websites, please let me know.  Thanks.

My wife is SOOO depressed over this.

Here are just a few.  Not knowing what it looks like I can't narrow it down more.  If you have a photo of the stand I'm sure a lighting store or online specialist could help you .  There are a lot of replacements out there.

You're going to have to look around these sites.  There are all sorts of shades on them.  I'm sure you'll find a replacement.  I know you can't bring it back, but the lamp is still there, it will just have a new shade.

Iowa Town Uses Garlic Salt To Fight Snow, Ice

The Associated Press

Published: December 18, 2008

ANKENY, Iowa - Slush has never smelled so spicy.

City crews in the Des Moines suburb of Ankeny are using garlic salt to melt snow and ice on streets from Tuesday's storm.

The salt was donated by Tone Brothers Inc., a top spice producer with headquarters in Ankeny.

Public Works Administrator Al Olson says the company donated 18,000 pounds of garlic salt to use on its 400 miles of roads.

Olson doesn't have details, but he says the salt would have ended up in the landfill, so the company donated it. A telephone call Wednesday to Tone Brothers wasn't immediately returned.

Olson says the city mixed the garlic salt with regular road salt and it works fine. He says some road workers say it makes them hungry, but Olson doesn't recommend it to spice up lunch or dinner.

Okay, I did that and that part is fine.  The question is, if I call tomorrow and cancel my account, do I still launch AOL the way I do now to get those options?  And if I give up the account, how do I access my e-mail?  Through aol.com?

What do you mean "cancel"?  By canceling, that means that you're going to change e-mail carriers, and that will disable your AOL account, your AOL e-mail address.  -Which I don't think is what you want to do.

Or are simply saying that you wish to stop using the AOL Mac client, and just get your AOL mail via the web and/or the Mac Mail client?

Are you already on the "free" AOL plan?

Questions, questions, questions..

No, that's the point - I'm not on the "free" plan.  I want to "cancel" the 9.99 I'm paying every month.  So, if I do, but keep my e-mail addresses and the free e-mail service, how do I access my e-mail.  Obviously, if I'm not paying then the browser won't work, correct?  I need clear answers.

Also, in gmail, it says that if AOL supports POP 3 that I can have all my AOL mail gathered there - how does that work?  How do I set that up?

bk - For example...

I switched over to AOL's free plan a few years ago.  I no longer pay a monthly fee to AOL as long as access AOL via the web and through my ISP. -Now, if I were to use AOL's dial-up network, then I would have to pay AOL for that use.

I still use my AOL software to access my e-mail and AIM/Buddy list.  However, I also use iChat and (Mac)Mail.  When AOL went "totally web", AOL also went "POP mail" which made it possible to access one's AOL e-mail through a third-party e-mail client - Entourage, Outlook, even through Yahoo or GMail.

Your connectivity issue sounds like you may just need to reinstall your AOL software - or even UPDATE it.  -The latest version of AOL for Mac is the "AOL Desktop".  If you go to AOL.com, and scroll down to the bottom of the screen, you will see "Download AOL".  That will allow you to download the "AOL Desktop".

OUCH!

You're still paying for AOL?!?!??!

OH, OK... Well, this is truly an EASY fix.  Just read the following instructions over a few times, then proceed.

1. Start AOL.
2. Log on to AOL.
3. Go to Keyword: Billing.
4. Change your Billing plan to the Free one.

That's it.  You are just changing your billing plan.  You are NOT canceling your service.  You can still use AOL's software to access your e-mail.

*The "catch" with the FREE plan is that you will no longer have access to some of the AOL functions, which also includes some of the customer service options.  But everything else will work as usual.

But AOL is still "quitting" arbitrarily (as Jose just found out) and when it does that, then the entire Internet signal gets screwed up - that's been happening since I got this computer - it never happened on my older PowerBook in Tiger.  Last I spoke to Apple Care they said they could change the frequency I'm on (they think that it's someone in my neighborhood who is interfering with the signal), but that if I do that it's not compatible with Tiger, which I still have on my PowerBook - so I either have to upgrade that to Leopard, which I now may do because I think I need to get on this other frequency so this crap stops happening.  For example, I can't even quit out of AOL the normal way - it won't do it - I have to Force Quit every time.

OH!  That bug!  There is a known issue when you run AOL and Safari at the same time.  AOL's built-in browser - at least in version 10.3 - causes all sorts of problems since it's still basically a version of Internet Explorer (for Mac).

Are you still able to use the internet browser within AOL?

So... Maybe you should use the AOL Desktop since that integrates Safari as it's browser.  *You can always download it, install it, try it once... Then if you don't like, just don't use it again and/or delete the application from your Apps folder.

Ah, then that makes sense.  So, maybe I should quit out of Safari when I want to use my AOL e-mail stuff, and then quit out of that, then launch Safari again - not use them together.  OKAY!
Title: Re: IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS
Post by: bk on December 18, 2008, 11:04:55 PM
Well, that didn't work.  I quit out of Safari, launched AOL, tried to quit and it wouldn't.  Had to Force Quit, which I did.  Then relaunched Safari, which wouldn't launch properly, so had to restart the computer for the fifteenth time today.  I'm calling Apple Care in the morning and we're going to hash this out once and for all.
