Tomorrow, my mom, my Aunt Doris and my cousin Debra and I will all venture north to Greenville SC for our annual jaunt/shopping gig.  Mostly, it's for reminiscences of the many years I lived there along with the requisite tour of old neighborhoods to see what has changed and what remains the same.

Making it all the merrier, Mother Nature is promising to make the day significantly colder than the weather I've experienced, thus far.

We've been in the upper 60s/lower 70s every day this week.  Tomorrow's high is expected to be 43.   About tomorrow's low I will not speak of it now.  Suffice it to say I won't be sleeping with a window open tomorrow night.

I've a question, related to the Topic of the Day, that I'm seriously curious about.  As always, I'm worried about sounding snotty.  Those of you who don't attend the theatre very often: Why not?  Do you not like plays and musicals?  Are tickets too expensive?  Is there not a wide enough array of stage entertainment near were you live?
 From Der B Yesterday

I have several reasons why I don't go as much as I could.

Cost.  For example: Sarah Brightman was in town and the nose bleed tickets were about $85.00. I know this was a concert but plays and musicals can cost the same.

I've seen most of the plays the TBPAC (Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center) offers when I was in NY.

And the real BIGGIE:   I don't like to drive at night because of my vision and because I am alone.

And I guess ya'll are wondering about my outing.  It went great!  I know that I had a good time.  I just feel bad that he spent so much money of those movie tickets, a drink and popcorn and then dinner to top it off.

I'm not used to someone else paying for me and I was somewhat embarrassed.

We saw The Day The Earth Stood Still.  I won't leave any spoilers just the one comment:  Wait for the DVD.

We both felt the same way.

We dined at Chilis.  I had the chicken ranch sandwich and he had nachos.

Then we went back to his house for a bit and talked and talked and talked.   We have a lot in common--he even likes One Life To Live.

I think we shall meet again.  We don't have to out to the movies--I'm just as happy to rent one and pop our own corn.

Good morning, all! Jayden is helping me with my computer skills this morning. I think he liked the snowy photos of Seattle, but he's noew playing with Randy and Maddie.

Today, we are attending a family party with Jo's side of the family: she's taking devilled eggs, chicken and dumplings, and a very interesting-looking cherry crumb cake. After that, it's Christmas at Randy's with their children - Randy's son Cory and her two - and the grandchildren Jayden and Riley.

Jayden is quite excited over the number of huge wrapped packages his generous grandparents have piled under the tree and he's become quite fond of the cherry chapstick I gave him yesterday. Randy's son Cory and his wife are spending Christmas in Tennessee with his mother and sister so we've having Christmas today before he leaves. On Christmas Day, Randy, Jo and I will exchange gifts. I'm looking forward to seeing my nephews Matt and Tim today, and I think the day will be fun.

I'm coming down with a cold, so I could use a few vibes. I've probably passed it on to DR Ginny and Richard and I'm feeling a bit like Typhoid Mary.

The biggest news of the day clocks in early when the Sun enters Capricorn (4:05AM PST). This is one the four, sacred turning points of the solar year as the Sun reaches its lowest point of declination (23+ degrees South of the Celestial Equator) in the Northern Hemisphere. This ushers in winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

Meanwhile, in your daily affairs right now, be aware that the Moon in airy Libra is void from 8:58AM PST until 3:38PM PST. Don't make big decisions, sign papers or commit to long-term enterprises during this limbo-like time-span. Once 3:38PM PST rolls around, the Moon enters intense Scorpio for the next 2+ days. Solving personal mysteries and ferreting out secrets are highlighted. Research projects and investigative reporting receive the cosmic green light. Take a good look at yourself in the passion-desire mirror. Why be afraid to understand more about how you tick in your subconscious universe?

So, how is everyone's Christmas schedule stacking up?

For me, it's Workies today, off tomorrow.

Billing, normally done on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, is getting tossed around a bit this week, since Thursday the store will be closed.  I'll be starting the job on Tuesday, then putting in a full shift at the register on Wednesday.  Thursday der B and I head to his daughter's for Christmas, staying overnight and returning the next morning, when I get back to Billing (starting three hours late and ditto when I'll be leaving for the day).  Then I get to finish the Billing on Saturday.

We haven't worked out exactly what my hours will be next week, what with New Year's Eve and Day, but I'm expecting more of the same.

As a bonus, I was looking over our records for the time I've worked at the store this year.  It turns out that I'll have put in more hours at the store than I would have back at the insurance company.  So much for my being retired!

I assume that you mean a non-documentary.

That's not an easy question, primarily because if it was a good film it had to take a certain amount of dramatic license.

I'll have to think about that one.

We are double booked  today. Brunch at 11 with a friend and his family and then at about 2 we are off to Brooklyn for a Morelli family cousin get together.

Last night we had dinner at a friend's house. We had bouillabaisse with crusty French bread, pear cider and apple cider (from the Migliorelli (http://migliorelli.com/) stand at the Union Square Greenmarket) and a salad. For dessert we had

Libby's Pumpkin Roll (http://www.verybestbaking.com/recipes/detail.aspx?ID=32372)

with coffee and tea. We also watched "It's a Wonderful Life" and we cried (in happiness).

We also made some crafty things for our host's Christmas wreath. He has a small apartment (and a dog) so he get a wreath, not a tree.

Much fun was had by all.

I anticipate much fun today as well.

It's nice to be  on vacation!

I'm still not sure about Christmas.  If I had to go somewhere today. I wouldn't be going. We're supposed to have snow on Tuesday so the plans aren't set. If all goes well I'll be with the parents from Wednesday to Friday then back home.   My sister has cancelled their previously planned trip....well, I think she has, one never knows whether she'll decide at the last minute to come here after all.

It rained most of the night, lightly but consistently, and it was very gray when I got up this morning. However, the clouds have parted and the sun is coming out making finally for a break from that gloomy, clammy weather of the past week. Of course, with that also comes cold temperatures, so it will go back to being winter here as the day moves along.

MICHAEL S:  I mentioned the difficulty I had with LOST in my review.  That was on my old Samsung, which I just sold, I haven't tried them on my new Sony.  What worked for me was letting it get through the loading bars and then pressing either Top Menu or Pop-up Menu, I can't remember which, and then it finally loaded.

As I mentioned yesterday, this Sony seems to have a strange anomaly with newer BDs (e.g., HANCOCK).  It goes through the loading protocol twice for some reason.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And, actually, I've been up since 8:00.  I puttered around about around the apartment, then headed down to Fairway to do some grocery shopping.  And from the looks of the groceries that are currently laid out on the dining room table, I'm guessing I'm going to be doing some baking today.  :)

*I just finished washing/rinsing out the bowls, utensils and measuring cups and spoons too.  Oh, and wiping down the counters.  Thus my "break" right now to read and post.

I agree with DR S. Woody about APOLLO 13. I lived through the real thing, and the film captured brilliantly that breathless sense of seeming doom with just a glimmer of hope. For my money, that's his best film.

I remember the real thing...and agree about the movie, too

Where has this year gone?

Happy LONGEST DAY OF THE YEAR, everyone!

DR Ron Pulliam - When you drive through Greenville, SC, be sure to "wave" at the campus of Furman for me.  Furman used to host some of the regional collegiate classical music competitions, and I always loved walking around the lake there before and after playing/competing.

*And when you drive by Bob Jones, just throw something.  ;)

Good Morning!

The snow has stopped (for now) and the main roads have been cleared, but I won't be able to get my car out until, at least, tomorrow (sometime).  Thanks for the photo of Titlow Beach, derBrucer.  My friend, Stan, when he is home, lives right up the hill from Titlow.  I am glad I drove over and picked up the mail yesterday afternoon, instead of trying to get there today.

The television news is saying that we got four inches of snow in Tacoma, but I think it is closer to six to eight inches.  Unfortunately, I will have no photos to prove it.  When they came and fixed the thermostat the other day, they needed to replace the batteries, and the only fresh ones I had were in my camera.   :(

Free for all -

which film do you think most accurately captured an historical event? (In as much was known at the time of filming).  ;D

Hmm, I was going to say JFK, but I probably shouldn't open that can of worms.  Instead, I will say APOLLO 13.

DR druxy - I like "The Reader" too, but didn't love it.  I guess I was expecting it to be a bit more emotionally involving, and also a bit more about Germany post-World War II, post-Holocaust - like the original book.  It all just seemed a bit too "moody" for me.  And, as I think I may have mentioned previously, having a semi-spoiler presented in the trailer, sort of took some oomph out of the final scenes.

*Then again, I'm not raving about "Doubt" like everyone else seems to be doing, so... ::)

OK - I should get a start on today's baking.  The current plan is to make a batch of cantuccini (almond biscotti), and then prep the doughs for a batch of peanut butter cookies, and a double-batch of chocolate-chip-oatmeal-pecan-toffee(!) cookies.  As I discovered semi-accidentally the last time I baked these cookies - and as was confirmed by an article in the Times this past summer - letting the doughs sit and chill and rest for a while contributes to a better final product.  -Although, the peanut butter cookie recipe already calls for freezing the balls of dough already.

-And since I just realized I forgot to buy peanuts this morning, well...

As to Disturbia, terrible in every way.  One of the worst.  And the star and director have apparently done it again in Eagle Eye.

The main problem with Eagle Eye, Wanted, the latest Mummy movie and virtually every other action movie produced during the last few years is that the filmmakers are so in love with the possibilities of cgi that they overload their pictures with these effects to the point where they become stupid and boring.

Why do these chases have to go on forever?  Just so the cgi guys can throw in another big-rig crash?  Rather than concentrating on that crap, how about doing a better job developing the story?

Oh, for the days when a cast of 1000s meant a cast of 1000s.

Actually, the shot of Steve and me was taken in Thunder Bay, Ontario.  We were there doing a car show.

Ah, THE ASTRO ZOMBIES.

One of the great shlock movies.  Ed Wood would have been proud.

Ted Mikels is an old friend, though we do have very different tastes in filmmaking.

I think that this might have been Wendell Corey's last movie...or close to it.  He had a drinking problem and was not getting the good roles any longer.  [Why else would he do this movie?]

I recall that, after he finished his last scene, he said "goodbye" to everybody, then tossed his script into the trash can as he walked out the door.

I do recall he came to Seattle during the 1950s in THE CAINE MUTINY COURT-MARTIAL.

He played Greenwald.  Paul Douglas was Queeg and the cast also had Steve Brodie & Robert Lowery.

My folks took me to see it at the now gone Orpheum Theater.

What is the first professional stage play (or musical) you ever saw?

Mine was HARVEY with Joe E. Brown.

I still recall some very specific moments, including Brown sitting down an talking to the audience after the curtain call.

I still recall some very specific moments, including Brown sitting down an talking to the audience after the curtain call.

First professional play (musical):

ONCE UPON A MATTRESS with Imogene Coca, King Donovan, and Edward Everett Horton.

There was a huge sigh of relief yesterday as rail service resumed between Christmasvillagetown and the Nativity Scene.  A light bulb was obtained from the BB Train and Hobby Shop (Lloyd's having shut down sometime during the past year) and installed yesterday evening, allowing residents to commence their holiday travels.

Last night I was treated to a surprise birthday treat and was taken to a performance of A CHORUS LINE in Philly.  Yes, it wasn't quite the show I remembered, and this production doesn't carry the emotional wallop it used to have, but it was still an enjoyable experience.

George, how is your snow?

It's white as ever...and falling.  It's nice out, but cold.  I'm going to attempt to go to the store for my mom, but if I need to go home, I will.  Fortunately, most of the non-freeway driving is on level ground with very few hills or dips, so I'll just have to drive very carefully.  I don't think it'll be a problem.  We'll see. :)

I wasn't sure I would be able to get out at all today--I woke up to find that we had freezing rain during the night and that everything was coated with ice.  While it looks pretty, you wouldn't catch me dead going out and diving in it.

Fortunately, the temperatures have risen and the ice has melted, so as soon as I clean my bathroom, I'm heading on out to finish up the shopping.

Next, I watched a Christmas gift from a very dear and precious friend, a Disney movie I've long wanted but couldn't get my hands on as a DVD: SO DEAR TO MY HEART.

Instantly, I became a little kid again watching this movie that I first saw on the DISNEYLAND TV show and never forgot. I only had an old VHS tape of it, and the DVD is SO much better. Beautiful Technicolor that only goes out of registration two or three very brief times during the movie. And Disney has given the DVD a 2.0 stereo soundtrack, and I'll swear it was more effective than the DTS-HD MA 2.0 stereo track on THE LAST EMPEROR that I watched yesterday!

This absolutely MADE my afternoon, and now it proudly joins the other Disney classics on my Disney bookcase in the den.

MattH,

A definite difference.

Plasmas generally feature better black levels but have highly reflective glass screens which work best in a very dark room. Off axis viewing (anywhere other than dead center of the screen) is better with plasmas. Plasmas are subject to burn-in, so the first 100-200 hours one must be careful not to let images or black bars remain stationary for long periods of time.

LCDs are more flexible in screen sizes going very small to very large. Their screens do not reflect light so they are better if your viewing room is bright with sun or lit while viewing. They have a harder time with fast motion than plasmas, though many brands offer 120mhz modes which help with that. However, many don't like the way the screen looks with that mode turned on: it makes film look like videotape.

DR Ron Pulliam - I meant to mention this yesterday since a friend's mother had the same questions...

TV signals in early 2009 will be going "Digital".  They will not be going "High-Def".  Although, "High-Def" transmissions are transmitted digitally. There will still be some non-High-Def programming being transmitted, but instead of being transmitted analogically (?), it will be transmitted digitally.  Most cable systems utilize cable boxes that can receive and "translate" digital signals. However, for any one out there who does not have cable - or a cable box - they will need to procure a converter box in order for them to view the digital transmissions (on their non-High-Def, or otherwise, television sets.

I don't know if BK has ever asked this, but here's a question that should bring back memories:

What is the first professional stage play (or musical) you ever saw?

I think my Mom took me to a production of The King & I when we lived in Connecticut.  It looked professional to me.  However, I don't recall the theatre being that big, so I don't think it was a tour, just a high-end local production.  I think.

Oh... And there was one of the many tours of Fiddler on the Roof with Topol at the National Theatre in DC.  Or one of the other stalwart Tevye's.

The one production that really sticks in my mind is Ibsen's Ghosts at the Kennedy Center back in 1981 (1982?). It starred Liv Ullman and John Neville Andrews. Kevin Spacey played the son... "The sun.. The sun..."

Well, I've been inspired by Jose to do some baking, but I found my kitchen lacking some critical supplies.  My DS Toby is wanting to nurse 24/7 and he screams bloody murder if I try to leave, so brave DH Jed is heading out to pick up some more molasses, shortening, chocolate chips, and nilla wafers for me.  Such a good guy.

Okay, the gingerbread dough is chilling in the fridge for the next three hours, and the Chocolate Toffee Crunch bars are cooling on the counter.  Soon I will start the chicken and rice casserole for dinner.  I like baking and cooking on cold days, it's so cozy.

I did not notice that. LOL! I am sure he is proud.

Astro Zombies scared the living daylights out of me when I saw it as a kid. One Ted Mikels film I really do enjoy is THE CORPSE GRINDERS. That one I just get a kick out of.

If you have time can you explain what this means. I've seen scrolls on a few stations saying they are going digital in feb 2009. but i don't really understand what it means or if it will affect me.

Ok, I wasn't going to weigh in on this but if you were turning left, it was probably your duty to yield even if he passed on the right to get around the car that stopped to let you turn (but didn't have to stop to let you turn).  At least that's the way I read it.  If they had to yield or had a traffic signal, well that's a different story.  Just my gut reaction.  I could be wrong.  And since I'm not licensed in California...I must add the disclaimer that this isn't legal advice...

Jennifer, essentially if you have cable, satellite or Dish TV, then it won't affect you at all.  It will only affect you if you get your TV only from an antenna.

Well, if you can explain how one is supposed to yield to someone who one cannot see because he has gone around cars in a non-lane and is blocked from view and is speeding to boot, well, I'm happy to listen.  There is something a little awry about the traffic laws in this country that clearly favor assholes who are dangerous and shouldn't be behind the wheel.  I will not bend on this, and even though I am insured and it's not coming out of my pocket, I have instructed my insurance company that they should not pay and that I am happy to present this case to a jury.  It's really that simple.  Next you'll all be telling me that people who are talking on cell phones and causing accidents are IN THE RIGHT.  Well, they aren't and this guy wasn't.

I don't know if BK has ever asked this, but here's a question that should bring back memories:

What is the first professional stage play (or musical) you ever saw?
...
Jane Powell and Edward Mulhare in My Fair Lady.  A women's club that my mother belonged to gathered there with husbands and some of their progeny, therefor the family went.  It was done in the round.  During the race portion of the Ascot Gavotte, the horses were projected racing around the back wall of the theater.

The theater itself was located in the far western end of the San Fernando Valley, if memory doesn't trick me too terribly.  It later became a church, and may still be there.

I remember that theater.  Saw a couple of plays there (NEVER TOO LATE w/Andy Devine & WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN?, a musical with Frank Gorshin).  I don't recall the name of the theater, but I think it's now a church.

Hi all.  What a day!  After I took Sheena to the dog park, I had to make a quick (ha) run over to Brandon to pick up a few things.  Her dog food, Bil Jac among them.

I also bought a humming bird feeder, a bird feeder, a squirrel feeder, a bird bath and a shepherds hook to hang the two bird feeders on.  I've been wanting to get these items for a long while but couldn't find the ones I wanted.  I finely did so I got them.

Then I did the grocery shopping for the week.  Christmas dinner will be a ham.  A much, much smaller one then I got at Easter time and had to eat for the next 6 months.  :) I also bought a very nice beef roast (in case I change my mind about the ham) and a pork roast for New Years.

It took forever!  The traffic was horrible (wonder why?  ;) )

Then when I got home around 4, I put all the feeders up and gave Miss Sheena a bath so she would be nice for Christmas.  I wanted to do that later in the week but the weather man said our nice weather is going Bye Bye.

By the time I put everything away and made dinner, it was after 7.

Needless to say, I didn't get around to doing the Christmas cards.  At this point, I just give up.  There will be no cards sent this year.  I don't know why I couldn't seem to get it in gear but it's way to late to even start them.

Even though Anita Bryant was somewhat of a pawn in that whole debacle , she did get what she deserved-- a divorce and no career.  She is/was just pasty enough to have ended up on Lawrence Welk or something otherwise.    I did not march in San Francisco over that, but I did a candlelight march in D.C.   I did make my whole family boycott Donald Duck Florida orange juice, though.   My younger sister wondered for years why my mother changed brands!  LOL.

I saw"The Boy In Striped Pajamas" this last week but could not march against that.

Not saying he was right or that there was anything you could have done to avoid it at the time. It's just who normally has the right of way. As I said, I don't know exactly what happened so I could be wrong. I'm just saying normally the person who turns left has to yield the right of way.   I am very glad you're ok and hope I'm wrong about it.  You are in California. things are different there

1. Is there a way to advertise for anyone who saw the accident to come forward immediately? The longer time passes, the more anyone who saw it will forget what happened, and you'll have no third party confirmation.

2. If she hasn't done so already, your friend should write down exactly what happened in her own words. Again, the longer time passes, she may forget details.

3.  THe fact that he passed you and you clipped him in the rear may make folks wonder why you didn't see him while he was T-shaped with you, and stamp on your brakes. Going too fast, they'll say.

Well...  I just took the last tray/sheet of cookies out of the oven...

-And I've just realized that all I've had to eat today is a bowl of chicken soup and cookies.  Five different types of cookies.  But one did have an apricot filling, and one had lemon curd.  So, I guess those could count as a fruit.  ;)

Definitely counts as fruit!!!!!

Robert Lowery was Batman!!!

In the serial, right?

In CAINE MUTINY COURT-MARTIAL, Lowery played the role that Fred MacMurray did in the movie.

Kee-rect.....driving around a 1949 Mercury convertible as the Bat Mobile and dancer Johnny Duncan as Robin.

I have both BATMAN serials on DVD. They're very dated, of course, and not all that exciting, but I wouldn't want to be without them.

When I turned on cable to check to make sure I wasn't missing anything I wanted to record tonight, I noticed TNT-HD was showing THE WIZARD OF OZ in HD. Since I've never seen it in HD, and the Blu-ray is coming out next year, I thought I'd get a sneak preview at what it would look like. Quite wonderful, of course. I didn't make it all the way to the end. There were just too many commercials for me to stand. But it did look as wonderful as THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD in HD, so I'm sure it'll be stunning when the Blu-ray comes out.

When I finally turned that off, I put on THE DARK KNIGHT and watched it again. I did catch quite a few plot points I missed the first time around, and things tied together a lot better for me. The Joker pulls so many jobs in the movie; I guess once they saw that Heath Ledger's Joker was so memorable that they wanted him involved in as many jobs as possible.

I didn't have the PIP "Focus Points" turned on during the movie, so I watched about a half dozen of them after I finished the film. All interesting mini-documentaries about different aspects of the production. I'm sure over the years I'll manage to get to all of them, but I like saving many of them for a later time.

I haven't looked at the second disc at all, so I have no idea what's on that disc.

HE was going too fast.  I was going about ten miles per hour.  Yes, my passenger and I have the same exact story because we both saw the same exact thing.  This creep came out of NOWHERE.

Had I been going faster than that there would have been a hell of a lot more damage to the front of my car - there was virtually none other than the bumper getting scuffed up.  No headlights broken, no metal twisted, nada.

HAPPY CHANUKAH, and thank you for the Chanukah wishes.  I just realized it is dark & while I have been eating Chanukah cookies we have not lit the menorah.  I had better do that before the Tom & Jerry's leave me on the floor giggling my heart out ;)

I thought it was Hanukkah this year, not Chanukah.

I'm confused.

I've watched a motion picture I TIVOd, I've watched the first episode of Mannix, Season Two, and I'm trying to watch Latitude Zero, a Japanese film with a few American actors - I started with the Japanese version, but I'm going to switch to the American because it's quite unnerving to hear Joseph Cotton speaking in Japanese.

Spent this evening wrapping gifts while watching a batch of Christmas episodes of THE ADVENTURES OF OZZIE AND HARRIET that I Tivo'ed from our local PBS channel last night.  I got a lot of wrapping done since the adventures of Ozzie and Harriet didn't exactly demand my full attention (though I did look up long enough to notice that Tracey Nelson grew up to look exactly like her mother.)

The Vixter's BB team lost today BUT she scored a basket - now she makes baskets ALL THE TIME in practice but she always freezes in the game and ends up passing the ball to one of the "good players" and letting them take the shot

Of course this was the first game ever that I missed - but I am so proud of her I could bust.  I hope now she has had a game basket she will stop passing all of the time and start shooting - she has the ability, it's confidence she lacks

Well, knowing my insurance company as I do I should think they will do everything in their power not to pay.  I must say, some of the reactions from certain people on this here site are bordering on the offensive as if I were somehow responsible for this guy's obvious and blatant idiotic driving.  I will remind you that none of you were there and you will just have to take my word for it that this guy endangered not only me but others by his reckless attempt to jockey ahead of cars that couldn't go anywhere.
