Title: A NOVEL BEGINNING
Post by: bk on January 02, 2009, 12:06:43 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were novel and had a beginning, and now it is time for you to post until the novel cows come home - they're currently nibbling on a square with fruity paste.

Topic of the Day...

In my CD player at work (when I get there in the morning), even though it's after Christmas:  "The Ultimate Christmas Collection" by The Brian Setzer Orchestra, The Manhattan Transfer's "An Acapella Christmas" (that's how it's spelled on the CD..."Acapella"), The Manhattan Transfer's "The Christmas Concert" (CD that I made from the DVD) and the original cast recording to The Glorious Ones by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty

Probably because der B and I both spent so much time (individually) watching the bonus material on the BD Casino Royale, I've been re-viewing the bonus stuff on the earlier Bond Special Edition DVDs.  So far, I've finished through On Her Majesty's Secret Service.  Next up will be Diamonds Are Forever.

I have no idea what I'll be listening to at work today, or if I'll even have time.

Thought I'd share (and also I wanted it on the permanent internet site that is HHW  :) ) the Colander Guy parody in its current state.  A dear friend said that if I was going to put a verse that it's about Food network's Mario Batali, i should just totally commit to the concept instead of just mentioning Batali in the verse, so...

COLANDER GUY (LOVE SONG TO MARIO BATALI)
Parody lyric by Fred Landau
(Parody of “Calendar Girl” by Neil Sedaka & Howard Greenfield)

I love, I love, I love my colander guy
Yeah, my colander guy
I love Batali, he’s my colander guy
Every single day that we eat

[1st chorus]

Fusilli
I'm so silly with love

Angel hair
He comes from heaven above

Cavatelli
I tell ya I covet that guy

Al dente
And I’m firmly gonna tell you why

Yeah, yeah
That pasta and pan
I love, I love Batali, he’s my colander man
Every day, every way
That I eat

[2nd chorus]

Elbow
I pray that he’ll be my beau

Marinara
He’s the one I wanna marry-oh

Buckwheat
Yeah, we’ll be buckin' a trend

Corkscrew
Pop a cork ‘cause it’ll never end

Yeah, yeah

The pasta we’ll drain!

That Mario Batali, he’s my colander swain
Every day, every way
That we eat

[Possible instrumental, followed by:

Yeah, yeah
That pasta is why
That Mario Batali is my colander guy
Every day, every way
That I eat]

[3rd chorus]

Farfalle
You know I wouldn't fall so far

Lasagna
But his noodles are the best there are

Orecchiette
He’s all ears and he never gets bored

Buitoni
He a beaut and he deserves an award

Yeah, yeah,
For my fav-rite food
I love I love Batali, he’s my colander dude
Every day, every way
That we eat

I love, I love, I love my colander guy
Yeah, sweet colander guy
I love Batali, he’s my colander guy
Yeah, sweet colander guy…

Good morning, all! I have a date with DR Ben and Anthony this evening, and I look forward to seeing them.  For the rest of the day, it's waiting for Fed Ex, the final edits of BABES, and later a trip to the market and my walk.

DR Nursie, it's the Albert Finney SCROOGE I detest, much as I like the cast. I remember seeing it and thinking that, while it wasn't a LOST HORIZON disaster, it was just a very ugly film. I probably should watch it again sometme to see if my opinion's changed. I much prefer Alastair Sim, George C Scott and Patrick Stewart adaptations.

I just ordered SCROOGE from Amazon.com; I'll rewatch it.

TOD:
DVD: Several Netflix items, CHRISTMAS CAROL ballet, Robert Shaw Chorale
CD: Kristin Chenoweth holiday album, THE STINGIEST MAN IN TOWN
   VCR: short art films

Isn't that funny. I saw the Patrick Stewart version over Christmas for the first time, and I hated it. It seemed flat, dully acted and produced, and not really well paced. I never ever want to watch that again.

I do agree with DR Dan (the Man), and have said so on several occasions, that the "Scrooge in Hell" segment is my least favorite moment in the Finney/SCROOGE, and I wouldn't mind its not being there at all (though the muscle men are fun to look at).

We watched Hitchcock's The Lodger last night.  Mr. Ivor Novello was quite a handsome fellow, wasn't he?

In any case, we were quite intrigued by the score.  Then, when it was over, we looked at the 'Bonus Features' menu and realized that there was an option for a completely different accompanying score!

I also love Jeremy Northam playing Ivor Novello in GOSFORD PARK. And he sings several songs in the movie that forced me to buy the soundtrack CD just for the songs. And Maggie Smith's acid comments throughout the movie are priceless. Plus there's a wonderful mystery. One of my favorite Robert Altman films.

Playing right as I write: Paul O'Dette on Elizabethan lute music.

Nice, quiet day yesterday... A nice walk through the neighborhood, hit the treadmill and stationary bike at the local community club house gym, a little (VERY little) writing on my thesis, some gratifying playage of my guitar (Bach is so soothing), and a short amble through the ol' Albertson's to get a few groceries. Monk was on ALL day, so I caught a few episodes here and there.

Wrote and answered happy noo yeer greetings. And that was my day. So here we are, IN the year 2009... oh, boy, where does it go when it goes???

Happy second day of January 2009.

I am in the "throes" of a head/chest cold.  It began as a tickle in my throat and remained lodged there as it worsened.

I was pretty much in a stupor all day yesterday because of it.  I thought of visiting HHW.com to ask scrimshaw how to move past that, but realized he hasn't posted about having a cold.

Today I am hacking up great gobs of goop.  I'm hoping to feel better by tomorrow.

Then Matt showed up. He says he told me he would be here on Friday, but I have no recollection of that, either. In any case, I put him to work. I have lots of phone calls and other personal business to do today, so he can do more of the packing.

It's time I made attempts at morning coffee.

I'm thinking about  a quick drive to Peet's with a short stop at La Farine to see if they have any more ham-cheese pastries.

I need to get out of this condo for at least 15 minutes today.  SO tired of being cooped up.

You people are so inconsistent.  You love monkeys but hate choosters.  ;)

I believe the SCROOGE in hell segment was one that was regularly cut for the t.v. broadcast version.  I kind of like it--Guinness is a lot of fun in it.  And if you have the super-deluxe SCROOGE souvenir book (there were actually two, believe it or don't), you know that his "song" actually had several verses, the lyric to which is reproduced.  I think they got one whiff of Guinness' "voice" and decided to wisely cut most of the "tune."

I meant to be generic, that of all SCROOGE & CHRISTMAS CAROL movies, the Albert Finny one is my favorite.  It is because I never liked any of the versions up until then & I enjoyed Albert Finny so much.  I think I was over exposed to the Mr. Magoo one as a child which I hated with a passion.  I wish I had read A CHRISTMAS CAROL before I ever saw it.

Hello, everyone.

Well, I am definitely losing it. My memory is kaput. This morning I reached into a drawer for a certain sweater, only to find that I've already packed it. I suspect there will be more of that!
Then Matt showed up. He says he told me he would be here on Friday, but I have no recollection of that, either. In any case, I put him to work. I have lots of phone calls and other personal business to do today, so he can do more of the packing.

The stress of moving can do that to you.  Thanks goodness you have Matt to help you!

The Mr. Magoo version holds a special place in my heart since that was the version they would always show each year at the Coast Guard Academy's Family Christmas Celebration.  The party would start off with a showing of the movie, and then we would all head out into the lobby for punch and cookies with Santa.  Santa would also give us a Christmas gift, and not just some random Christmas gift, but something we really wanted.  -I always knew that Santa got our letters/wish-lists somehow!  :)

And I'm sure they'll enforce this just as they've done the no cell phone use without an ear device or speakerphone law - i.e. not at all.  As I've said, I have never seen a CHP or cop pull anyone over for blatant cell phone use while driving and so people just continue to blatantly do it.  I've seen them blatantly do it with a cop car NEXT to them and the cops still don't pull them over.  The fact is, I think a cop should be penalized for not enforcing these laws.

I don't know for sure, but since it appears the story had to be assigned to ABC News's "Investigative Team," you can be sure that there's a powerful conspiracy behind this "coincidence."   ;)

I'm up, I'm up... But I let my monkey sleep in today.

Where does he plan to visit today?

I believe Monkey will be staying put today, since I really should stay put today and take care of some laundry and cleaning.  But things are always subject to change.

*I also want to make sure he doesn't get over-exposed right now.  The Museum of Modern Art did end up sharing my "tweet" about "Monkey at MoMA", and when I checked my emailbox this morning, I found a couple of nice comments from various people and other museums(!), as well as some professional photographers(!!?!!).  I don't want his new-found almost-celebrity to go to his head.

You hated MR. MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL???  I am shocked and appalled!  That is my all-time favorite verson of CHRISTMAS CAROL, possibly even better than Albert Finney's SCROOGE, but not quite as good as mine.

I HATED anything with Mr. Magoo.  I am sorry I didn't get to see the best ever Scrooge.

Oh, I loved Mr. Magoo!! Mr. Magoo, you've done it again!

The other lawyer in my old office reminded me a bit of him.  Not sure why ;)

Well, the speakers were never on, so it didn't make a noise.  I actually had discovered the tone arm on the turntable several weeks ago, and had permanently set it to the "up" position, so that even if it moves over (and Lord only knows how that happens), it wouldn't "play" the turntable.  But this was the first time I had tried to play an LP since then.  It was actually kind of funny when I got the stylus out (which was a bit of a trial)--the poor needle was completely bent back on itself.

Good afternoon.  I have just finished emptying out and vacuuming my car.  This was not as mundane a task as you might think.
My car has always been a source of guilt for me.  I tend to let things pile up, tossed in the backseat with the thought "I'll come get it later" and "later" never seems to come.  As a result I had papers back there from some concerts and conferences I went to in 06, not to mention a collection of mismatches gloves, CD's, jackets and sweatshirts, old make-up, hats, empty water bottles, a pair of nylons (Hey, tell me I'm not the first lady to strip her nylons off once she gets in the car for a long drive home) some baby stuff, and a melange of other various debris.
I brought it ALL into the house, piled it in a pile, and mercilessly began to throw away whatever I didn't absolutely need in the car (like the ice scraper and a gift card to Starbucks)  I now have a large bag of trash to throw away, some CD's to file, a few empty coffee cups already in the dishwasher, some laundry to do, and a perfectly EMPTY car.
I then went through with the vacuum and cleaned up every crumb and pine needle.
Then I used the some vinyl cleaning wipes to clean all the non-cloth surfaces.
My car is unrecognizable as my own.  DH Jed is going to faint when he comes home.

I feel very good about this, as you can tell :)

And my darling son slept through the entire thing in his swing, not waking up for the vacuuming or anything.

Since we're all going out to dinner tonight when Gregg gets back into town, I only had a small salad as a snack for lunch. While I ate it, I watched another NCIS episode from Season 3. A man's head is found in the back of a car, but the man was allegedly cremated some months earlier, so naturally there has to be an investigation. I didn't figure out all of the guilty parties, but I did guess one of the main ones.

Next, I went back to work and watched SWING VOTE. It's a light political satire. Costner's main character is a real turnoff (kind of a deadbeat dad with this adorable and adoring 11 year old little girl who has to be HIS parent), but there is a wonderful supporting cast: Nathan Lane, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Dennis Hopper, Chip Espin (whom I just love), and the little girl is played by a sensational newcomer Madeline Carroll who absolutely steals the movie.

I listened to the audio commentary. The director is one of those people who punctuates every few words with "you know" which just drove me crazy. I tend to start listening for those and tuning out what else he's actually saying. Fortunately, his co-writer did the commentary with him, and he didn't do that, so it was good when he started talking.

A little bit of trivia from imdb - "People" was originally written for MR. MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL

Trivia for
Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol (1962) (TV)

The composers Bob Merrill and Jule Styne offered a song entitled "People" for the score but the animation had already been completed and it was too late to include it. Instead they added it to the score of a Broadway musical they were writing called "Funny Girl", where it became the first of many hits for the star, Barbra Streisand.

Today has been a day already.  I woke up to find the passenger door window smashed.  The thief took a cell phone charger, an audio cord, a pair of iPhone headphones, 2 broken bluetooth headsets and a case of water.  The thief did NOT take an iPhone and an amplifier.    So, I've spent the morning nailing down a mobile glass repair person (done, will be here soon) and cleaning the garage so I could pull the car in (from the rain) so said repair person can work out of the rain.  Tomorrow, we leave for a quick jaunt to Disneyland, so I'll be happy when all this can be done and in the past.  The upside is that we had to clean the garage to get the car in.  Less work later...

In the meantime, an afternoon of Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero.

"People who need people" works better for me in A CHRISTMAS CAROL than in FUNNY GIRL, I must say. I also mustsay that I always thought Mr Magoo was funny and I was impressed that his performance as Scroge was played as straight as it was. Of course, don't forget that I realized my dad during his last year had turned into Elmer Fudd.

Back from a lunch meeting with David Wechter - went to a deli in Tarzana that was new to me - it was pretty good.  We spent two hours going over Nudie things, then I picked up a lot of packages, then I came home to the news that CDs will be delivered today, but that somehow some of the inlay cards hadn't shown up (they would not have known this until they actually packaged) - the print house is trying to find them and if they can't they'll have to run them first thing Monday morning.  The good news is that I should have just enough to take care of all the Kritzerland orders and almost all of the store orders - one big online dealer can't pay until the middle of the month, so because of that I'm safe, I think, to ship everything else.  Whew!

Depending on when they get here, my plan is to pack them all up and get them to the post office before they close - if I don't make it, then they'll be there first thing in the morning.  I'll also take the biggest of the store orders over to the UPS Store and get those large number of boxes on their way.  That will be the biggest payment I'll be expecting, so the sooner they get them the sooner I get my dough.

Today was the first day in I don't know how long that I didn't have anything that I had to do.  I thought I would spend it just lounging around the house (wearing my lounging pajamas, of course), but by noon I was feeling antsy.  I got myself dressed and drove to a Lowes where I purchased a shop vac.  Then I headed to my favorite comic store and then broused in a Borders and a Barnes and Nobel (purchased a calander and a copy of New York mag.)

But now I'm feeling wiped out and I've called a pair of friends turning down their invite to go see BENJAMIN BUTTON.  Tonight will be a stay in nite, perhaps watching the string bands from yesterday's Mummers parade.

As a combined Christmas/Birthday present my sister-in-law send me a "Game" - TAOC - the art of conversation!  It consists of 300 topics.

I rarely see my my youngest brother and his wife so I don't think it was any sort of hint! (They live about four hours drive away). (I didn't grow up in the same family as my brothers)

I find it rather sad that such a game even exists!  Why would you have a group of friends together if they didn't have something to talk about anyway?
Title: Re: A NOVEL BEGINNING
Post by: Tomovoz on January 02, 2009, 05:40:26 PM
I've not opened the packs of topic cards.

The topics I can see are:
1. Who taught you to drive and were you happy with their approach. (Maybe that's a golf question)
2. Can you remember the first song you learnt.  Yes or no would seem to be the appropriate answers
3. What would you do if you were sure to get away with it?

That seems rather lame, as games go.  If you are in a group where one person dominates the conversation it might be useful as a way to give everyone a chance to talk.  LOL-I am no way inferring that you talk too much.

I don't exactly know why, but it took me longer to write up SWING VOTE tonight than just about any other DVD or Blu-ray I've dealt with in the past year. Weird.

But glad it's done.

Dinner was at a new Chinese restaurant, and the buffet was just super good. I enjoyed everything I ate, but I stuck this first time with the tried and true. Next time, I'll try some of the other things.

It was nice to see Gregg back from visiting his parents in St. Louis. He seemed glad to be home.

When I went back downstairs, I didn't really feel like a movie, so I watched the last two installments of BROADWAY: THE AMERICAN MUSICAL. Just the kind of shows to settle me in for the evening.

I skimmed today's AS THE WORLD TURNS, and there was nothing of interest, but previews for next week did feature the fellas and the big mouthed Jade who spills the beans about Brian.

Yes, a grand time was had on the Upper West Side. Good food was consumed, good conversation was had, presents were exchanged and it was an all around wonderful experience. Thanks to our dear host Mr. Moore for sparkling conversation, wonderful pecan pie, apple pie and ice cream!

I decided I'd watch a Hitchcock, and as I looked over them on the Hitchcock shelf, I spied THE 39 STEPS which I hadn't watched in quite some time. It's Criterion's last issue of the film. When I started it up, I noticed a documentary on it that dealt with Hitchcock's British period, and I didn't remember ever having seen that feature, so I watched it first.

P.S. Larry looks great. His weight loss continues and he is in good health and spirits. Hooray (I make it sound like he was sick, he's not but he does look very good).

When it was finished, I began THE 39 STEPS, but I only got about an hour into it, so I have the remaining thirty minutes tomorrow. It's a marvelous film, and I think it must be Robert Donat at his most charismatic.

Good news from DR LAURA.

Shocking news from DR MATTHEW.

And in other news.....other DRs....

Wow...HHW was a hopping place this First Friday of 2009.

I just watched DOCTOR ATOMIC on PBS and enjoyed it very much, but was pretty much bored and irritated every time the good Doctor's wife or that Indian Woman stepped forward to sing some useless bit of drivel......the scenic elements were most intriguing....even on TELEVISION!!!

DR Matthew - so sorry to hear of your misfortune.  Although it sounds like it could have been worse.    :(

Ditto!  I know this guy (he's a music director and voice teacher) whose car was broken into many years ago and ALL of his music scores (selections and full scores) were stolen!  He kept them in his car because he would go to his students' houses for their lessons.  It was QUITE the expensive lesson that he learned. :-\

Well, that gave me the shivers.

The one time my car was broken in to, "they" took a tuxedo (which was a rental!?!? - OY!), and a duffel bag filled with my spare keyboard pedals and power supplies, as well as a stack of orchestra parts, which, thankfully, were xeroxes.  However, on the very dimly lit bright side, the duffel bag had been recently "marked" by a cat, and once something gets "marked", well, you know it.  The worst part of the whole deal was the shock of discovering that someone had done such a thing... and all that broken glass.

Well... If you feel like taking another chance on "Doctor Atomic", they also just recently released a video of the original production that was directed by Peter Sellars.  In some ways, it works better than the recent Met staging, as it "explains" some of the stretches of music where seemingly nothing happened on stage (at the Met).  There was a much larger dance element to the original production.

I will have you know that "picturized" is indeed a word DR Elmore. It is the word used to describe the Bollywood musical numbers. I think it is Hindi, or Sanskrit.

Google the word and you will see.

In Salem, Oregon, and particularly in my neighborhood, you never leave anything in your car...otherwise, within a few hours you will have nothing in your car.

I had the passenger window broken out of my car once when I was parked along side the Mormon Temple in Mesa, AZ.  I was in the library doing geneology research and came out to find  broken glass.  There wasn't anything in the car to steal, so they just broke the window and left, but it still was frightening and a pain in the butt to take care of.

On a much lighter note:  This is fun!  Our AIG Lehman Parody Medley was #2 on a noted accounting professor's Top Videos relating to the "Bailout and Popular culture."

If you haven't seen it yet, you can view the video at Prof. Albrecht's blog site linked above.

Or  - if you like seeing the words while watching a video - you can see the newly-loaded version with the lyrics on-screen, which is here (Using the High Quality setting on youtube is recommended):

Listening to the newly released soundtrack to Auntie Mame (great sound) and Rome Adventure (great sound).  I wrote some more, and will finish chapter one (I'm on the final page) when I get back home after she of the Evil Eye is gone.

Am still rather stuporized.
