Thursday morning greetings!  It's sunny and very cold here in SW Ohio this morning - my favorite kind of winter day.  Yesterday's snow showers accumulated only on the grass and rooftops, so driving isn't a problem.  Good thing, because I have to take my mom to a doctor's appointment today.

Good morning, all! I need to take my walk this morning and work today on Frank Loesser scores. Last night I spent two hours with 2008 receipts, organizing November's and December's before I begin my year's tally and my Feb 2 tax date.

I'm up, showered and ready for whatever happens this day.  Didn't make it out of bed as early as I would have liked (5:20 instead of 4:45) but perhaps tomorrow will be different.  TOD - don't know much about Deborah Kerr, however, I need to view "The King and I" before Saturday's auditions as I have never seen it on stage or on screen, I am familiar with the score, obviously.  I'm off to work.

***WRIST AND PLUMBING VIBES***
to DR Cillaliz!!!

Thanks!  The wrist is looking better this morning. It's got a big ugly scab in the middle, but the edges are starting to heal and I think it's going to be fine....eventually

The plumber arrived just as promised and is now pounding out the plaster in the wall behind the shower.  He's going to have to take most of the wall out to get to the pipes he needs to get to, but will replace all the galvanized steel pipes he finds with copper.    The wall is in the storage/kitty litter room, so I don't care if he has to take the whole wall out, especially if I'm getting the old galvanized steel taken out as a result.

The good news is he shouldn't have to damage the tile shower at all.  I am very pleased with this development.

The girls are not at all pleased with all the noise.

For all wondering, I have NOT yet seen a doctor.

I am not "over it".

I am calling again today and asking what the point of the questionnaire and solicitiousness were on Tuesday when no one has bothered to check in with me or has tried to get me in to a doctor.

Perhaps now that I am into day 8, they'll give me a little more credence.

I've actually managed to get a "live" person to speak to at my clinic, and my doctor's very own scheduling assistant will be given my message.

This should get me through today, although I cannot speak for tomorrow.  Tomorrow is not only another day, it's the last day of the week...and a weekend looms during which my doctor will not be available.

If I were even remotely "better" than I think I was Tuesday morning, this would all be a non-issue.  But...alas...no...I probably got four hours of sleep last night, even though I went to bed at 11 p.m. and arose (for the final time) at 6:15 a.m.

WRIST & PLUMBING VIBES FOR DR CILLA!

Cilla, please don't mess with a burn.  If it isn't healing correctly you should get something for it.  Are you putting an antibiotic ointment on it?

Yes, I'm cleaning it with peroxide (gently) and putting neosporin on it.  I keep it bandaged all day to protect it and leave the bandage off when I'm sleeping so it can breathe.  It looks lots better today.  The redness around the center of it is lessening and it's just got a scab on it.  I had so much going on yesterday and I wasn't that careful so I think I just bumped it a few times and irritated it.  I have no problem going to a doctor, but at this point I don't think it's infected, just ugly.  There are lots of things and people like that ;)

Probably going to go in tomorrow or Monday.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at her signature on the loan document--she evidently couldn't decide whether she was capital "F" Frances or small "f" frances, and kind of did a combo thing.  And her "Farmer" just kind of scrawls off into jibberish.  I probably read too much into these signatures, but it's been one of the interesting things I've noticed as I've collected them from various periods of her life.  Obsessed?  Me?

I'm also very aware of what burns can do.  When I was a kid, we were driving to a local state park to meet friends for a picnic.  My mom was carrying a pot of hot coffee on her lap.  I don't know how it happened exactly but the whole thing spilled on her lap.  Dad told us to get out of the car and walk to where the others were going to meet us and he took her straight to the hospital.  She was in the hospital for 2 weeks and it took a long time for her to heal after she came home.  So, I know not to mess with burns.  I'll be ok

I hope you told them what color the goop is, DR Ron. That usually makes a difference. Yellow or green means a doctor's appointment.

I told them...and the greenish-yellow I indicated seemed to fill the bill.  I have to be in radiology at 1:30 and I'll see "a" (not "my") doctor at 2 p.m.

Report to "Radiology" for "Chest X-rays."

Funny enough...the last time I went to get chest X-rays when I was sick, my doctor was out of town and this doctor I'm seeing today was taking his patients.

He was none too happy with me when I walked into his office and sat down.  I was ashen, slightly perspiring and could barely talk.  I had just survived a weekend bout with strep throat but, for some reason, did not feel "well" or "recovering."

This doctor (Dr. Shedd, as in "Shedd Spread"!) looked at me and said, "Well, you've got a cold.  What do you expect ME to do about it?"

I felt no urge to bitchslap him, so I said, "I expect you to make sure I haven't missed something in trying to combat this thing.  I should be feeling better, but I'm not."

He ordered an X-ray...and 20 minutes later butter would have melted within a 10-foot radius of him.  He was all warmly solicitous of me and my condition...and the pneumonia he prescribed medications for...and the order to stay home from work for at least a week.

Tomorrow I must go to my morning radiology appointment and then drive 40 miles inteh other direction (well Vixdad will do the driving) to go see the surgeon.  After 6 calls in 4 days and being on hold for 24 minutes he finally deigned to give me a look-see.

Iam so happy with all my other doctors and their staffs - but this one, and his office staff, I have little confidence in.

This is the office with the evil Chauncy in it

I left a message for my inital ENT guy this morning to see if he wouldn't consider taking over my case himself.

He referred me to Dr. Frank on the first place though, so we'll see......

What "cans" are you taking/eating/pouring/ingesting? Ensure, Boost, etc.?  Or is it something more specialized?

It's something called Two-Cal, it's like Ensure but more caloric, more protien - it has 475 calories oer can and if I take all 4 cans (or 1900 calories) that I am supposed to,  I am guaranteed 100% of all required nutrional requirements.

Problem is small as the can is, it makes me feel bloated.  My gag relex is on a hair trigger these days so I have to stay very, very still until I think my stomach has emptied.  Tha was the problem early this morning - I got up too quickly and when I leaned over and my waistband pressed against my belly, that was all she wrote....

This time I took over an hour to slowly feed myself and then sat still for another hour or so before I dared to stand up.  So far, so good.

I think it's more a matter of them being overwhelmed than not being willing to take me seriously.

The phone message always says, "If this is an emergency, call 9-1-1.  The VA may or may not pay for any services received."

That's good news about the ENT, Vixmom. They should be on their best behavior for ALL of the patients.

DR Ron Pulliam, a few years ago I got a sinus infection right after one of the doctors at the practice (mine, actually) passed away. This was in early October. The earliest they said they would be able to schedule an appointment was for the day after Thanksgiving. I went to an urgent care clinic and was out in a half hour with meds.

I wonder sometimes where the people at the front desks of doctor's offices think they are working?  The can't be aware of the fact that real live people with real live diseases are seeking immediate medical attention - they must think they work in a Jiffy Lube or something

Rare CDs were a sealed copy of The Enemy Below on Intrada, Sakamoto's score to De Palma's Femme Fatale, and the original Japanese CD on Hisaishi's Porco Rosso.

That's good news about the ENT, Vixmom. They should be on their best behavior for ALL of the patients.

DR Ron Pulliam, I got a sinus infection right after one of the doctors at the practice (mine, actually) passed away.

Boy do I agree with this one.  It always drives me nuts when someone at the front desk in a doctor's office acts like I"m simply wasting their time.  There have been times I wanted to leave, but was sick...so what can you do

This has kind of turned into a day off and I'm fine with that. I've worked so hard this week.   I do have work to do at some point before tomorrow, but I'll get it done.

This morning, before the water was turned off, I got out my humidifiers, sxcrubbed them out and threw away the disgusting filters that were left there from last year.  When the plumbers went to lunch I ran to the store and got new filters, I was ready to get the going and then I remembered the water is off.    So, they are ready to go....

DR Vixmom, I hope the ENT can take over. I remember how awful the other doctor was.

The ENT just called me.  He said that he knows the other doctor personally and professionally and that he is teh best qualified guy around for my specialized type of cancer but he was very concerned when I told him about the problems I was having with the staff, particuarly the evil chauncy.

He said he was going to call Dr Frank himself - and make sure that tomorrow's visit was smooth and stress-free and that if I still was unhappy to call him back and he would either refer me to another oncology surgeon or take over the case himself.

I love Dr Gargano

Excellent!

Are you drinking the liquid in the cans?  I thought they were going into the feeding tube.

KEEPING THIS STUFF DOWN VIBES!!!

I take the stuff out of the can and pour it into a mug and then I use a thing like a turkey baster to suck up the stuff and squirt it down my tube.

I could never drink it. Tthese days it is all I can do to sip some gingerale or water and this stuff is pretty think - it's like a melted maltshake thick...

I didn't think you drank it, just didn't realize a feeding tube caused such problems.  I thought it avoided them.

In theory it is supposed to... I just don't fit the theory

Lucky you ???  I have a tendency not to fit "the theory"

We thought a lot of the pediatrician to whom we took Rob as a newborn and until he was 5 or 6, but the front desk people were so rude that we eventually transferred Rob's care to our family practitioner.

And, just today, we were about 10 minutes early for my mom's dermatologist appointment.  The doors to the waiting room were locked because there was a "staff meeting" going on (a staff meeting with deli sandwiches, by the way).  We were stuck in an unheated vestibule until someone realized that patients were beginning to arrive for 1pm appointments.

The speed of this is scary.

When I was 19 I worked for a brilliant, strange but brilliant, allergist.  He instilled in me the dangers of using antibiotics unless absolutely necessary.  We had many patients who had developed severe allergies from antibiotic overuse.  When Tamiflu was touted as the "miracle" drug to rush & take if you got the flu I had my concerns it would be overused & did not plan to take it.

I have to say right now most of my doctor's offices are very very good, teh ENT and his staff are great, our Primary and his staff are great, the chemo people are all very nice, they have made themselves immediately accessible everytime I needed emergency hydration (4 times so far)

THe Radiation Doctor, Dr. Ames and his staff, particularly his RN, Maureen are exceptionally nice.  She is the one who looked so sad when we discovered I lost 2 more lbs that I felt badly for disappointing her.

It's just the surgeon's office - his PA, Anthony is very nice and helpful and I guess the doctor was OK but trying to get through the 2 women and the evil Chauncey to get to them....

Well, we will see what tomorrow will bring.  Vixdad is taking the morning off and driving me there.

I cannot drive anymore as I am subject to sudden bouts of motion sickness - so I'm not a lot of fun as a passenger either.

Hi folks.

I am very, very, very tired tonight.  I had to fight with the insurance company to let them know I am working on the house.  Did I tell you they dropped me because of my porch and roof?

No dog story--so far.  I can't handle any more of that.

And I worry about what they may or may not find while they are fixing the house.

Needless to say I am so stressed that it was not a big surprise by the time I got to the doctor today my BP was though the roof, I have a low grade fever and it's true, I do have diabetes.

The doctor told me we have had this conversation before about my stress levels and how i could stoke out if I don't keep myself calm.  Easy to say.  Hard to do.

((((VixMom))))

Sorry I don't have better news.

The house is coming along.  I am pleased with what I'm seeing done.

I'm just worried because they brought the guy to look at the septic tank today.  I haven't heard their findings yet as to what kind of shape it is in.  Somehow, I don't think it is good new or I would have heard something by now.

Cillaliz, have you considered the possibility that Juan the Drywaller might have been arrested and/or deported and that may be why he never showed up again?

That's what Edith said, lol.  No, in part because I saw him driving the company truck about 2 or 3 weeks after he was last at my house.  He's a legal permanent resident, so he would have had to have committed a crime to be arrested.  I'm not sure what happened.  I think the most likely answer is he just forgot that he left a couple of the things he left here.  The supplies he said that I paid for so I may as well keep.   After I get done with the basement and don't need the great saw horse/step stool anymore, I'll call him and see if he realized that he left it here.

DR Danise are you taking PB meds?  I know it is difficult to go for walks with so much going on, however exercise has been proven to reduce stress, lower blood pressure & help diabetes.

I thought he could have been arrested for dui or something -- not just immigration. Just thinking of some reason he wouldn't be able to come back.

Yes.  I am taking BP meds but like the kidney stone meds (did I mention the KUB shows I have another one despite taking the meds that should prevent them?)  it doesn't matter seen to matter.  When I get mega stressed,  nothing stops it.   It shoots right up there.

I could handle stuff if it happened at a reasonable pace but it just seems like I go for a month or two and nothing happens .  Then (for whatever reason) all hell (pardon the language) breaks loose.  It can't be ONE problem.  It has to be several all at one time.   It just leaves me feeling drained and tired.

Don't know about that. There hasn't been for 3 days.  Today is the first day the adjoining buildings were also without water so there was no where to go...   Edith said the water was back on next door and there had been a stream of people going past our office toward the building with the working bathroom

I'd like to, but the way the shower is built it would be raining on my belly button!   The shower head is too low for one of those unless I put in some sort of fancy arm.

I really liked the shower head I had.  I got it from the energy company when they did an energy audit.  It's got a massager on it but is still fairly low flow.  If I find one like that I'll probably get it.  It's not fancy at all.  I will take the time to have fun looking at what's out there, though.  It's always fun to see what's out there

So...

I did indeed leave my apartment earlier this afternoon.  I had originally planned just to walk down to 125th Street, then grab the train there to head further downtown.  Well...

Once I got down to 125th, I figured I might as well just walk down to 116th...

110th...

Central Park...

The Reservoir...

Columbus Circle/59th Street

The speed of this is scary.

When I was 19 I worked for a brilliant, strange but brilliant, allergist.  He instilled in me the dangers of using antibiotics unless absolutely necessary.  We had many patients who had developed severe allergies from antibiotic overuse.  When Tamiflu was touted as the "miracle" drug to rush & take if you got the flu I had my concerns it would be overused & did not plan to take it.

And I am proof of that overuse.

Oops, another episode of being logged in when I thought I was logged out.  Sorry...I was printing the handouts for a teleclass I'm attending tomorrow, then fixed dinner, then helped Richard clean up the kitchen, then visited with Rob and Mary Linda, then we all watched a Bones episode on DVD...well, my evening kind of got away from me...

I thank you all for your concern, but please rest easily.

I was thoroughly tested, probed and examined.

The good news is that there is no pneumonia or any type of infection

The bad news is that the diagnosis is "A Severe Cold", primarily in my chest, complicated by excessive coughing and respiratory distress.  Because I do not have prolonged fever or body aches, I am told I must endure it and make myself as comfortable as possible.  Because the CDC has warned all health care agencies about overuse of antibiotics, drugs they might have prescribed for me a year ago that could have shortened the duration can no longer be prescribed.   If the X-Rays had raised any alarms, of course, the outcome would have been different.

I am relieved to know that I have not been remiss in my own self-medicating and that I did not wait too long to seek medical attention.

Because my chief complaint has been respiratory distress during/after my coughing bouts, followed by exhaustion and some sweating and breathlessness, the doctor told me he could offer me one of two cough medications.  One was with codeine, which I refused.  Codeine makes me nauseous.

The other is benzonatate, which the doctor said is a bit unorthodox for such colds but very effective against my chief complaint.  Benzonatate is a small clear capsule that looks like a bead.  Its function is to mask all the irritants that cause the frequent coughing bouts.  I take two capsules every eight hours.  Side effects are dry mouth, possibly dizziness, and other irritating things that have not happened to me since I took my first dose three hours ago.

The beauty part is that it works.  Not only does it decrease my need to cough, but it allows me to breathe deeply without coughing, something that wasn't happening.

I was so tired when I got home that I took my first dose and hit my bed for a nap.  I am now more refreshed than I've been since before the cold set in.

Thanks all for the concerns.  Tomorrow I will stay home and just rest and try to help this thing  play out.

I'm pleased to report I had a good experience calling my doctor today.  When I called she just happened to be at her desk so they put her on the phone.  The results of the lab test arrived this morning confirming I was on the correct antibiotic.  Within minutes of my speaking to her a 4 day renewal of my prescription had been faxed to the pharmacy which I conveniently I picked it up on my way home after hiking with Sherlock.

Great news, Jane!

Yes, the obituary with picture will be in this Sunday's newspaper, and the memorial service will be next Saturday, January 17, at 1:00 p.m.

And yes, Mark will take the flag, which I assume he will fly on the flagpole at the house.

I am getting worried about Ron Pulliam. He should be back with a report. I hope he didn't have to be admitted to a hospital.

Gosh, I didn't think of that.  I figured the place he goes might be very unorganized & make him wait a long time.  You are right, this is way too long.

...Or he could have already come home from his appointment, then popped a movie in... then fallen asleep...

;)

The sleep part was the right choice.

As for popping a movie in, I don't have the attention span or interest right now.  In movies, or music, or food...and spare me the idea of sweets.  Yuck.

I guess if I had started the New Year on a diet, this would have been the best way to get into it.

And now for a semi-random comment...

It appears that having the MacWorld Conference and the Consumer Electronics Show back to back this week has "broken" Twitter and some other computer and social-networking sites.  ...All those iPhones, Blackberry's and other PDAs in one place, and all posting the latest news at the same time.

I don't know why, but I find this incredibly funny!! ;)

Sort of like a kitchen fire at a firefighter's convention?

Or a robbery of attendees at a Police League banquet?

So, yesterday we had our added and very last performance of Reefer Madness! The Musical! at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts Black Box.  To say it was guerrilla theater is a bit much, but we did have to change quite a few entrances and exits.  In our original space, we had a pass-through behind the set to get from side to side, but we didn't last night.  On the stage right side, the exit led to the one (very small) dressing room, but it also opened into the WCPA main stage.  We put most of our stuff downstairs in the main stage dressing rooms, but I had some fairly quick changes, so I never went there during the show, only for intermission.  The stage left side had a door to the very rainy outside and we had to use that to go back and forth between sides.

Post by: George on January 08, 2009, 07:38:41 PM
There were a few scenes that had to be performed on the opposite side of the stage because of the new set up and Mary had to die on the couch instead of the floor because the chairs were directly on the floor and not on risers, but otherwise most of the show was performed as it was done at the original theater.  They were able to set up about 120 chairs and the place was almost full!  We had a GREAT audience!  A lot of people who came weren't able to see the show before because of the cancelled performances, but many had seen it before and wanted to see it again.  THEY ALL LOVED IT!  We had the best audience of the run. ;D It was a great way to end the show.

TAO (http://www.olytheater.com/) (Theater Artists Olympia, who put on the show) has a tradition that if you do three shows with them, you get an engraved flask or personalized mug (your choice).  This is actually my fourth show with them, but I finally got my flask (even though I don't drink ;))!  On one side, it says TAO and my name underneath, and on the other side is the TAO logo.  It's very nice.  I'll take a picture of it when I get home.

I have not seen THE BONNIE HUNT SHOW yet.  I'm a big fan.  Does life imitate art on her show (reference to her tv show).

What I love about her is that she is so comfortable in front of the camera and with guests...and a very quick wit...and funny!  When Rosie O'Donnell, Caroline Rhea, Ellen DeGeneres and Megan Mullally had their shows, you could see in the very early episodes that they were all not quite comfortable with the situation.  There definitely was a learning curve.  Of course, Caroline and Megan's shows didn't last very long, so they didn't have the chance to really "get into the groove."  But Bonnie was "on" right from the beginning.  She was personable, funny and comfortable.  I love her show and hope it sticks around for quite a while. :D

Next came GREY'S ANATOMY. Interesting cases this week. BUT!!! Way too much bickering in the episode that quickly became tedious. And I am really over this musical beds business and adults sneaking around like kids having sex and keeping it from their friends. So juvenile.

During the broadcast, I visualized myself possibly dropping this show by the end of the season if the writing and plots don't improve.

The meeting with Sean went very well.  We don't really have time to create his full-blown show for his February Palm Springs gig, so I had him bring me a list of 40 songs, and by the end of our meeting I'd narrowed it down to a firm 14 with three alternates.  So, we'll create a show for this gig, and then enlarge upon it for his real two-act show.

The garage looks amazing, and Trash Hauler hauled a huge amount of crap out of here.  I'd found about forty books I wanted in the house (mostly rare film books), and I had Handyman Doug rearrange my storage space above the bedroom closet and he got everything up there perfectly.  All that's left are two boxes for me to go through at my leisure, and to put some movie memorabilia away.  I left spaces for several boxes out in the garage, so if I need to move anything back out there I'm covered.

I didn't enjoy the whole "family vs. Betty's job" vibe in tonight's "Ugly Betty" episode.

Despite the ending, Betty chose the correct things to do in all situations, IMO.

It reminds me of the boyfriend/friends conflicts in "The Devil Wears Prada".

I still have the two storage spaces, which are crammed with crap.  Maybe that's the next job for Handyman Doug - a complete reorganization of storage space 2 - where I have all the sheet music, cds, and everything that was in my office.  There are boxes in the back of that space that I haven't seen since 2001.  Yes, I think I just may do that and get rid of a lot of extraneous stuff - and there are important books there and magazines.  So, perhaps next week we'll do that.
