Well, you've read the notes, the notes were becoming and spoke of a legend, and now it is time for you to post until the legendary cows come home.

A Very Happy Birthday to our very own Juliana A. Hansen!  Even though she's never posted on the actual board, I loved her "Thoroughly Modern Millie" Journal!

AARRGGHH...the Idina concert that I'm recording just went silent and the screen went black for a couple of seconds.  Not just silent for a moment like before, but the picture cut out, too. :P

Well, Idina's concert is now over.  I muted the sound so that I could catch up on the posts.  I'll watch it later when I create the chapter breaks for the DVD+R that I'll burn and see how badly the sound was affected.

Good morning, all! I'm listening to Bach's B-minor Mass and having my breakfast. In about 30 minutes I shall take a walk to the market. I have my second Finale lesson this morning at 11, and I am looking forward to seeing my adopted son Josh who will help me remember the 90% I forgot of the last Finale lesson.

After Josh leaves, I believe I shall proof some of the MOST HAPPY FELLA harp part and move on to the strings. I think tonight, during whatever I watch on tv, I will begin sorting through my tax receipts and prepare myself for next week's tallying, the part I detest the most of the tax prep.

Yesterday in the mail I received a book GREAT GUYS by ML Lake, who was a working composer and orchestrator in the early part of the 20th Century. GREAT GUYS is his biography with interesting comments about colleagues (the "Great Guys"), including Arthur Pryor, John Phillip Souza, George M Cohan, and Victor Herbert. I was hoping that I would learn Mr Lake was the other unidentified orchestrator for THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER with Harlod Sanford, but no such luck. I'm back to suspecting it's George Trinkaus.

That's my report.

I like that Wild West carpet DR JOSE - I don't want it in my living room.....but it is fun to see....the others are certainly appropriate!  I don't think I saw Monkey.

Well, I finally got to the end of THE INVADERS this morning. Besides the remaining two episodes (which featured guest stars like Suzanne Pleshette, Will Geer, Mark Richman, and Susan Oliver), there was also a half hour Q&A with Roy Thinnes.

I enjoyed the Q&A, but it's infuriating that certain questions weren't asked (like about his feelings about the cancellation, the midseason time change for the show, did he follow the ratings during the run and know they were in trouble). Argh!

So, I'll watch NOAH'S ARC: JUMPING THE BROOM today for my work project. Ordinarily I would have taken a day off, but with *6* movies waiting plus more TV box sets (including the next MURDER SHE WROTE and the second season of FRIDAY THE 13th-The Series), I have to keep working.

However, I hope to get some of the shows on the DVR watched today, too, since I likely won't watch the Screen Actors Guild Awards but do them like the Golden Globes: record the show, read the winners on-line, and then watch the show if there is any speech I want to hear.

I have a yen to watch ELAINE STRITCH:  AT LIBERTY tonight.  And I wonder,  are there any ootlegbays floating around of Bea Arthur's ON BROADWAY (or whatever it was called...)

Why am I thinking that when they recorded Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends for the audio/CD release, that they had also done a video-taping of it for commercial release too?  But that the video-taping took place during the Los Angeles engagement of the show.

Taping for upcoming DVD release will take place at these shows!

I was surprised it was so high.  It was a parking ticket inside of a lot, and this is a small town.  In Los Angeles a similar parking ticket might be $45.

For some reason, "The Reader" left me a bit cold. I thought the story concentrated a bit too much on the central couple to the exclusion of the backdrop of post-World War II Germany - everyone was trying to pick up the pieces and start over again, and to re-find their national identity.

I kind of felt the same way about the book.

I’m lucky our big boy is a total slug.  This morning Keith showed me the photo of the Corgi's on his computer.  When I turned around to leave I almost ended up on the floor as I tripped over Sherlock.  I swear, if that dog had more than blinked I never would have managed to balance myself.  For once I was pleased he earned his nickname of Sluggo  :)

Thousands of orders for Aretha Franklin's inauguration hat

The flamboyant hat that managed to eclipse the Queen of Soul at the inauguration Tuesday is now prompting people to burn up phone lines, as thousands of orders pour in for the style.

Luke Song, owner of Mr. Song Millinery in Detroit, said he and his employees have "barely had any time to count" exactly how many requests he has gotten ever since Aretha Franklin belted out "My Country 'Tis of Thee" while wearing his chapeau on national television.

The heather-gray wool felt headgear featured a prominent bow lined with Swarovski rhinestones. Custom-designed and hand-molded over two days by Song himself, the hat cost upward of $500.

Fans are welcome to drop $179 on a similar satin-ribbon version.

'Slumdog' wins at the Producers Guild of America Awards

Just two days after earning ten Academy Award nominations, "Slumdog Millionaire" on Saturday won the Producers Guild of America Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award. The award went to producer Christian Colson.

The film, which revolves around the fortunes of poverty-stricken Mumbai teenager, has become this movie season’s darling winning multiple Golden Globe and critic’s awards. "Slumdog" just went into wide release in the U.S. on Friday and has earned over $48 million so far domestically.

"Slumdog" won out over "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "The Dark Knight," "Frost/Nixon" and "Milk." The PGA Award has also become a reliable bellwether for the best picture Oscar — 12 of the winners over the past 19 years have gone on to win the Academy Award’s top honor, including last year’s recipient "No Country for Old Men."

Indians don't feel good about 'Slumdog Millionaire'

The story of an impoverished street child in Mumbai, which has won 10 Oscar nods, is a stereotypical Western portrayal, Indians say, that ignores the wealth and progress their country has seen.
By Mark Magnier
January 24, 2009

Reporting from Mumbai, India -- Even as American audiences gush over "Slumdog Millionaire," some Indians are groaning over what they see as yet another stereotypical foreign depiction of their nation, accentuating squalor, corruption and impoverished-if-resilient natives.

"Slumdog," which earned 10 Oscar nominations this week, including one for best picture, is set in Mumbai, is based on an Indian novel and features many Indian actors. Yet the sensibility is anything but Indian, some critics argue. They attribute the film's sweeping international success in large part to its timing and themes that touch a chord with Western audiences.

"It's a white man's imagined India," said Shyamal Sengupta, a film professor at the Whistling Woods International institute in Mumbai. "It's not quite snake charmers, but it's close. It's a poverty tour."

The movie won't encourage tourist.

Have you researched the "truth" behind the story?

Quote
'OZ'CARS: JACKMAN, LUHRMAN PLAN MUSICAL NUMBER

You want to know why Oscar host Hugh Jackman has been seen all over town lately? Well, he has asked Luhrmann and Catherine Martin -- the director’s wife -- to choreograph and produce a big opening musical number for him for the Oscars.

This should be something on the level of Busby Berkley and somehow make reference to all this year’s big films. You can almost envision Jackman -- a song and dance man trapped in a Wolverine -- in top hat and tails, doing his Fred Astaire thing to Bruce Vilanche’s rhymes about "The Reader," "Slumdog Millionaire," "Ben Button," "Frost/Nixon" and "Milk." Maybe throw "The Dark Knight," "Doubt" and a couple of others in just for fun.

Well, since the screenplay was based on a novel, I presume it is fiction.

Another Finale lesson come and gone. After an hour, I need a break to see what little fundamentals remain in my brain. Not so much as I wish, I fear, although Josh is a good teacher.

We're going to give me a week to play with the score I've entered and see what stuck. My next purchase will be a Midi keyboard. Josh and I looked over the ones on amazon.com and I'll take his suggestion.

I did watch DAMAGES while I cooked and ate lunch. Just like last season, this plot is going to be so labyrinthine that guessing a solution to the central mystery (who murdered William Hurt's wife?) is going to be only a tip of the iceberg.

Next I watched NOAH'S ARC: JUMPING THE BROOM. I had never seen the Logo series this is based on, so I had to play catch up with the characters. Luckily, it's well enough written that it's easy to do, and I did find several of the characters who were very interesting and enjoyable to watch.

Unfortunately, there's no feature film "feel" to the movie. It seems like a bunch of TV episodes strung together with brief, incomplete scenes that CRY for exploration of feelings and emotions. Instead, we have all this bottled up stuff until everyone has a breakdown and a reckoning near the end of the movie.

It has the same feel that LOVE, VALOUR, COMPASSION had on the big screen (also the same kind of weekend gay male vibe): a gay story better told in another medium.

I won't say I didn't enjoy it because I did, but it didn't feel like a movie to me at all, just an extended version of a TV show.

There were a bunch of bonus features on the disc including a "making of" documentary, a director's video diary, a wedding video, a documentary about the shooting of the movie poster, and 11 deleted scenes.

There was also a 20+ excerpt from the series SHIRTS & SKINS. I'd never seen that either until I watched this on the DVD.

When I saw "Slumdog Millionaire", I was surrounded by Indian people. There was a young Indian woman to my left who gasped in recognition of the various locales in the movie. Some of those gasps were filled with excitement, while others were obviously filled with a disappointed recognition. To the right of me was a father and his adult children. They, too, would recognize various locales and situations in the movie, but they still cheered out loud, hands in the air at the end of the movie. I did hear one voice of dissent as I was walking out of the theatre, but once I got home I realized that he was quoting the same critiques that Dargis had in The Times. Namely, that Dev Patel was "obviously" from London, and that it wasn't a "Indian film". -Well, I don't think it was ever meant to be an "Indian story". It was just meant to be a story.  And a very good one at that.

This reminds me of all the critiques of the portrayal of Black Women in "The Color Purple".  Walker and Spielberg weren't trying to exploit anyone, nor were they perpetuating stereotypes.  If anything, they showed how People can Survive and Change for the better.  And I don't see anyone damning less than favorable portrayals of U.S. politicians.  ;)

It doesn't happen often, but I completely forgot about my laundry in the dryer, so I put in a BONES - Season 2 episode while I folded the laundry. It's the one where Booth and Brennan go to Vegas and he enters an underground fight club. It's a fun episode, but I didn't get very far into it. I'll finish it when I go back down, and then spend the rest of the evening catching up on a lot of the TV shows I've missed this week.

Back from the long jog and am I glad I did it.  As frequently happens on the long jog, inspiration struck like a lightning bolt, and the entire last third of the book came to me almost fully-formed.  I ran very briskly all the way home and hopefully I remembered most of it as I wrote it down furiously and fast.  I'm so happy.  I was really puzzling about how to do the last third and nothing was coming to me, and now I've at least got the bones and I'll flesh them out as best I can.

GAY PORTLAND MAYOR WON'T RESIGN OVER LYING ABOUT RELATIONSHIP WITH TEEN

PORTLAND, Ore. —  The mayor of Portland, Ore., told city commissioners Sunday he will not resign despite calls for him to do so after he admitted he lied and asked a teenager to lie about their sexual relationship.
Mayor Sam Adams publicly apologized this past week for lying early in his campaign about the relationship with an 18-year-old man in 2005.

The teenager, Beau Breedlove, was a legislative intern when he met the mayor at age 17. He and the mayor both say their sexual relationship started after his 18th birthday, in June 2005.
...
Breedlove, now 21, told The Oregonian on Saturday that the relationship was consensual.

Mr. Kauffman will be so very pleased.

Sunday evening greetings!  Richard and I are back from our impromptu vacation in lovely Oxford, OH.  We waited yesterday until after the mail had been delivered, then headed west.  We checked into our hotel, I watched the end of the figure skating pairs competition, and then we took a drive around town.  It's changed a lot, both on campus and off.  We found a great parking space near the concert hall, walked uptown for dinner, then spent about an hour in the library before going to the concert.

The Miami club opened the show with some selections, including a very grim piece about 5 ways to kill a man.  We decided that we never need to hear that one again.  There was much made about the 8 singers who were injured earlier this month when the Club was on tour.  The van they were in went off the road in Erie, PA.  Six of them sang with the ensemble last night and the other 2 were in the audience with their families.  Those 2 joined the group on stage for "Johnny Schmoker," cervical collars, casts, and all.

Then it was time for the white-tie-and-tails University of Michigan Men's Glee Club.  They were great, as always, and were joined at the end by the Miami group.  Those 2 glee clubs combined produce an awesome sound.

We got back to the hotel in time for me to see the end of the ladies' skating event and today we got home from church (worship and meeting) and errands in time to see the mens'.  I'm really out of the skating loop - I hardly know any of these people.

Only if you frosted them.

And then sprinkled them with "sprinkles".  -Multi-colored ones.

If they win will they be able to afford a decent post-production editor to do trailers? I'm so sick of Tinker Bell flying glittering circles around head-shots.

That's not the editors, it's what they are mandated to use by the department heads and art director.

My favorite bookstore in NY closed over a year ago. It was the one place I would always visit without fail whenever I went to NY. They always had at least one orange tabby in residence. Their last cat in residence before they closed was Pynchon, who was massive. Here's a great article about him...I wonder what happened to him?

I'm just amazed at how much Encore costs now!  It used to be a cheap(!), but very good program.  However...

Since you can import Encore files into Finale now, I will sometimes do most of the note entry in Encore, then make it "pretty" in Finale.

Through friends I have seen several installments of Soaptalk that Rinna and Treadway hosting. Of the two, I would take Treadway since he seems to respect what the person is saying and allows them to talk. Lisa has to get her 2 cents in consistently. Perhaps she is a very nice and pleasant person in real life and is just overly hyper on television.

I had an evening filled with wonderful things to watch. I began by watching the skating. Johnny Weir's skate was as awful as it was at the last Olympics. Completely lacking fire and artistry. I understand he had been ill and wasn't fully recovered. I think he never should have competed.

The fellow who finished second (his first year in the nationals; I think his last name was Oi) was just wonderful. Effortless jumps and with a little seasoning, he'll be the best in the world. Jeremy Abbott and Evan Lysechek were both erratic and unimpressive though I didn't mind Abbott's win. Lysechek got the placement he deserved.

And I concluded my evening with 1 1/2 episodes of THE STARTER WIFE recorded off Universal-HD. The Judy Davis plot is the one that has gotten me the most involved. And I like the actor who plays Molly's selfish ex-husband but I can't STAND his character. Insufferable.

Liked seeing Joe Mantagna back reprising his role from the miniseries. Too bad Molly didn't choose him when she had the chance.

The fellow who finished second (his first year in the nationals; I think his last name was Oi) was just wonderful. Effortless jumps and with a little seasoning, he'll be the best in the world.

The second place finisher was 18 year old Brandon Mroz (who was credited with a quadruple jump and eight triple jumps in his free skate).

Curran Oi (also 18 years old and his first nationals) finished 8th.

The future looks rosy!

I saw THE READER and SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE today.  I didn't expect to see so much violence in SLUMDOG.  It was hard to watch for a while, but I eventually got into it.  I liked THE READER.  It didn't bother me that they didn't get more into the background. I saw it as  Mike's story.

Gee, glad I thought the afternoon and evening were mine all mine to relax.  At about six-thirty, I started entering the rest of the Nudie fixes and I JUST finished.  Whew!  Part of the problem was that I had to write this reprise for which I never finished the lyric, and then because we've cut the character of Arvin, Juanita's boyfriend, I had to write her a section in a short number.  But it's done.  David will enter his final four things, and then we'll meet towards the end of the week, read through it and see how we like it.  And then I may just have a few people over to do a REALLY informal reading at my house, with the songs.  And then I'm going to set a date for our official staged reading.

I worked away at various and sundry things today, which made the day just fly by....unfortunately that brings me all to close to the Monday workday. Fortunately I don't go in until 1pm.

I'm listening to a very strange but fun CD Jrand sent me - let's just say I'm feeling very Japanese right now, and I may lend it to former dear reader Hisaka.
