Yesterday, I went to work and actually got some work done.  After that, I went downtown to "usher" for Putt Putt Palooza miniature golf (it's a fund raiser for the Washington Center for the Performing Arts) and I mainly just stood there and directed people to the next "hole."  Then I went to my sister's for some vegetarian nachos with the family.  She used some kind of textured soy product instead of ground meat and it was very good.  She did have real cheese and light sour cream (my niece is vegan, so she used soy cheese and no sour cream) and standard nacho toppings and veggies.  My parents and niece played Phase 10 (I got there after they started) and a good time was had by all.  I was there for several hours then came home to find that my cat had thrown up downstairs in my living room. :P Fortunately, it was very easy to clean up.

And now, I'm just catching up with all the posts. :)

I think my computer has a virus...trojan...something. :P I keep getting this pop-up banner saying that my computer is being attacked from the Internet and how should this program (that I downloaded and installed...my bad...but uninstalled) handle it.  NOOOOO!!  I ran my McAfee virus software that Larry, my sister's boyfriend, put on my computer when he built it, but it never finds anything.  Larry said that I should uninstall that and reinstall it from Comcast.  Comcast customers get McAfee for free.  Since I was only sort of shown what to do with it when he built my computer, I don't really know how to use it.  I hope this works.  So far, nothing bad seems to be happening on my computer, except for this pop-up banner every 10 minutes or so. :-\

So, I must leave the Internet for the night and see how to uninstall McAfee so that I can reinstall it.

Good night all...and wish me luck.

I wonder if I will so carefully consider what I say when my voice comes back?

Good morning, all! Today is the 150th birthday of Victor Herbert, America's great Irish-American composer, and one of the creators of our musical theatre heritage. While some of his short pieces remain in the concert repertoire, larger works like the wonderful cello concertos and the tone poem "Hero and Leander" get only sporadic performances. Like Sir Arthur Sullivan, he was born in Ireland, trained in Germany, and moved to a large metropolis to achieve fame. In Herbert's case, it was a ticket to New York to play cello - like Jacques Offenbach he was a virtuoso cellist - in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He was conductor for several years of the Pittsburgh Symphony, a Victor recording artist with the Victor Herbert Orchestra, and a mostly-forgotten musical theatre composer who wrote for all forms of turn-of-the-century musical theatre from opera to revue:
     MADELEINE and NATOMA (opera)
     THE MAGIC KNIGHT (parody opera)
EILEEN, NAUGHTY MARIETTA, THE MADCAP DUCHESS, SWEETHEARTS (romantic operetta)
THE RED MILL, MLLE MODISTE. THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER, IT HAPPENED IN NORDLAND (musical comedy)
      BABES IN TOYLAND, WONDERLAND (extravaganza)

I think he was, unlike Arthur Sullivan, looking for a WS Gilbert who never arrived, but he worked with the best of the Broadway set, who turn worked with other greats from Oscar Hammerstein II to Jerome Kern.  While not all of his shows would play well today and the quality of their scores can be inconsistent, second-rate Herbert is often better than some of the first-rate folk writing today.  Take 5 minutes out of your tme today and listen to something Victor Herbert wrote, from the sentimental nostalgia of "Toyland" to the piquant quaintness of the "March of the Toys," from the grandiose flights of "The Italian Street Song" to the Vaudeville knockabout of "The Streets of New York."

My favorite Victor Herbert number is "Barney O'Flynn" from BABES IN TOYLAND, an "Irish" song with a great swing and yearning subtext, but I'm partial to his two "Mignonette" songs, one cut from BABES and another in THE RED MILL, a very funny musical for two comedians. Happy birthday, Victor!

As I mentioned last night, I'll be working today on THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL, a film by Luis Buńuel. I've never seen it, and from what I've read, it's quite surreal, so it should be an interesting afternoon. It's not very long, but it is a two disc set which suggests many extras that will likely take me much of the afternoon and evening.

As promise a recap of my London theatre orgy:

I timed the trip so we could catch AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY with the original Steppenwolf cast at the National Theatre with my old theatre colleague, Tony-winning Deanna Dunagan in it.  She and it were magnificent.  It turned out we were staying in the same hotel as the cast, so we had a couple of chances to chat, usually going to or from the theatre.  And on our last night there, Deanna, The Lovely Wife, and I all went to see The Pitman Painters at the National.  In fact, of the eleven shows we saw, five were at the National.

Both The War Horse, a exquisite epic that utuilized intricate puppetry as well as actors, and Tom Stoppard's rarely performed collaboration with Andre Previn, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, a fully staged play with a full orchestra, were also grand and moving pieces of theatre.  Toby Jones starred in the latter.

The only absolute dog we saw...which almost never happens at the National...was Mrs. Affleck -- a reworking and updating to the fifties of Ibsen's Little Eyolf.  I like Ibsen a lot and this play in particular.  This rewritten updating neither further illuminated Ibsen's original nor brought any particular insight to the fifties era it was set in.  I found it also badly staged with a cumbersome set.  The preview night I saw it, I watched the set-change which was supposed to be done during a fifteen
minute interval.  It took twenty-five and seemed more like a set strike than set change.

The Old Vic's production of a new play called COMPLICIT, directed by Kevin Spacey and starring Richard Dreyfuss, Maureen McGovern, and David Suchet, got raked over the coals by the critics.  I didn't think it was as bad as all that and liked the message of the play and, particularly, the second half.  Despite wearing a visible ear-piece where he was being fed as-yet-unlearned lines, Richard Dreyfuss was okay, very Dreyfuss, and moving and effective in the climax of the play.  McGovern was too young to play his wife and wasted in an underwritten part.  Acting honours went to Suchet.  Spacey had converted the Old Vic into a theatre in the round and it was an interesting, intimate space.  Despite the Old Vic's great history and consistently great work ; I've always found the space a bit unintimate and the sightlines troubling in its original configuration.

We saw two Joe Orton plays, LOOT, starring the terrific David Haig, and ENTERTAINING, MR. SLOANE, starring the equally terrific Imelda Staunton.  I'd never seen either onstage before and enjoyed both.  In SLOANE, Ms. Staunton came on at one point in the sheerest of nighties, displaying all her charms and fluffy bits.  Tres daring.

We saw a new play at the Donmar written by and starring Ian McDiarmid (The Emperor in all the Star Wars movies) called BE NEAR ME.  After a first act with two characters doing impenetrable Scottish slang accents of which only every third sentence was understood, the play really came on and centered around McDiarmid's charming, funny, sad performance.  Certainly worth the price of the ticket.

Two Shakespeares rounded out the bill.  Oddly enough, they are the two plays I have seen more than any other, could care less if I ever see again, and don't find the epitome of Shakespeare to begin with.  Both, however, were delightful.  The first was Twelfth Night with Derek Jacobi playing Malvolio, assisted ably by several other actors we've seen frequently over there -- Ron Cook, Guy Henry, and Victoria Hamilton, not household names here, but very respected over there.  While sturdily done and perfectly enjoyable, I suspect the reason it didn't kick me in the butt was my indifference to the play in general. The second Shakespeare was an RSC production of Midsummer Night's Dream, which was magically done.  They made the usually tedious lovers interesting and fun, the 'rude mechanicals' were quite amusing, and the array of faeries mischievous and real characters.

Alas, all that said, London...while still the greatest city in the world...gets to looking like an American Mall a bit more every time I go.  The block of Charing Cross road that used to be nothing but used bookstores has now replaced many of those bookshops with a Subway or a Quiznos or a coffee shop (sometimes a Starbucks, sometimes a British franchise).  I've never seen so many sandwich and coffee shops.  If you don't like a particular one, go two doors down and you'll find another.  Several of my Favourite bookstores have disappeared all over London (and another is about to go online), as have so many quirky little shops replaced by dull franchise stores or eatries, far too many of them American brands.  Thankfully, Cecil Court (and BK's and my friend, Nigel Williams) remains pretty much intact and seems to have added a few refugee bookshops from other places around town.

If it hadn't been for the National, the West End would have been pretty dismal.  I fear it's looking more like Broadway all the time.  We saw nothing in Shaftsbury Avenue this trip, because there was nothing worth seeing.  Merely an array of tired musical revivals, comedian one-man shows, and dreary rockish musicals.  In the weekly theatre guide, I counted 26 musicals to 11 straight shows...most of those musicals were tedious, tired crap like Stomp; We Will Rock You; Diry Dancing; Les Miz; or inervating revivals of Grease; Sound of Music; Phantom; Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.  And then there are the long runs like Chicago -- come on already, the movie came out years ago!  I'm so tired of long runs that should have been shuttered eons ago, bad rock musicals, and musicals made from movies.   Thank God for the RSC and the National!

I am figuring that I will get to see most of the second half of the Super Bowl today.  GLORIOUS runs approximately 2 hours; 5 minutes with the intermission.  The cast is expected to do the "meet and greet" with the audience after the show, but I may just put in a brief appearance.  The house is practically sold out today.

DR Jane:  Regarding your comment about remembering the keyboard characters to create smilies, I'll ask if you have a printer.  If you do, you can click on "quote" to a post that contains a smiley you like.  When you see the text, you will see the characters rather than the emoticon they create.  Make a note you can keep next to your computer that for a big grinning smiley, you'd type a colon ( : ) and a capital ( D ) with no space between them.

For a winking smiley, you'd type a colon ( : ) and a semi-colon ( ; ).

The thing I remember most about CANNERY ROW was that Raquel Welch was originally cast and was replaced after filming started by Debra Winger. Miss Welch filed a huge lawsuit but I'm not sure whatever became of it (the lawsuit, not Miss Welch).

From wikipedia:

Raquel Welch was originally cast to play Suzy, but was fired after five days' filming. It was alleged she was taking too long to get ready each day. Welch sued the studio, MGM, and won a multi-million dollar settlement in the mid-eighties, but by then her film career was badly damaged. Because Turner Entertainment owned the film when she won the settlement, Turner had to pay it.

If you saw the junk on my little desk you would know there isn't room for me to print out a cheat sheet. ::)  I'm rather hopeless.
I saved all the details on my computer, though at this point it is faster to use the preview :D  In reality I use the preview box a lot, simply because it is easier to see what I'm typing in the preview box.

I forgot it was the Super Bowl until I decided to walk over to the grocery store. Mistake!!! At 11:30 all New York football fanatics were at my grocery store buying things for their various and sundry parties. I saw the lines at the register and left. I did get to another store though to buy the eggs I needed.

We are having hearty meat loaf with mashed potatoes and green beans for dinner tonight. I just finished getting the meat loaf ready. It will go into the oven around 3:45.

I had my annual sleep study done on Friday night.  A week early because they had a cancelation.

I couldn't sleep without the mask.  I guess it's so ingrained in my head that if I don't wear it I could stop breathing and not start back up again that I just couldn't settle down until I had it on.

They let me try until midnight and then had to switch me to the mask--after that, I fell right asleep without any problem.

They let me try a new, more comfortable mask that I really liked.  The tech made a note of it and said he would let the doctor know that I got along with it even better then the old mask.

I hope my insurance will let me switch.

I take photos every time I go to the house so I have a record of it.

Sheena is doing well--so I'm told.  I haven't been to see her because after taking about it to the kennel people and some dog friends I decided I didn't want her to get excited and think she was going home when she wasn't.

The kennel people just love her and have told me they take her out to play even more often then I'm paying for because they just like her so much.

DR Charles Pogue - "Little Eyolf" becomes "Mrs. Affleck"?  Hmm...

Jose, sadly, it didn't become much of anything.  One prominent critic suggested a more enjoyable evening might be spent tearing out one's fingernails by the roots.

Just curious: What were the updated names of the characters?  Especially for "Borghejm".

"Little Eyolf" was my friend's directing thesis project in college, so I was more or less immersed in that world via osmosis for a few months. ;)

The Intrusion alert you are getting has nothing to do with Anti-Virus software. These are alerts generated from Firewall software like Norton Personal Firewall. To practice "Safe cruising browsing you should have both Anti-Virus and Firewall software installed. I usually get one or two intrusion alerts a day.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
The Classic Regency Romance—Now with Ultraviolent Zombie Mayhem!
Quirk Books By Jane Austen
and Seth Grahame-Smith

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies -- Pride and Prejudice and Zombies features the original text of Jane Austen's beloved novel with all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie action. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she's soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Complete with 20 illustrations in the style of C. E. Brock (the original illustrator of Pride and Prejudice), this insanely funny expanded edition will introduce Jane Austen's classic novel to new legions of fans.

It's all comes down to responsible web-browsing and downloading.  For both platforms.

Mac's are not totally immune to viruses.  However, since Mac's OS is not an "open platform", it would just require too much work and time for a hacker to develop something.  However...

As some Mac users have found out over the past week or so, there is some malware present in the new iLife '09.  Well, the iLife '09 that's available for download via bit/fittorrent - a.k.a. illegal download. ;)

JMK,

I too have the LP.  I picked it up for a dollar in a store in LA once.  Never got around to playing it until a year ago when a friend converted all my records to CD (I don't think there's been a commercial CD).  I did not think you could improve on the record which was performed by Ian McKellen, Ian Richardson, and Patrick Stewart...all three brilliant voices...but seeing it live was a treat!  I thought it odd or maybe just fortuitous that shortly after having listened to the album I should get a chance to see a performance of the same play.

14-times Olympic gold medal winner Michael Phelps caught with cannabis pipe

By Georgina Dickinson, 01/02/2009
THIS is the astonishing picture which could destroy the career of the greatest competitor in Olympic history.

In our exclusive photo Michael Phelps, who won a record EIGHT gold medals for swimming at the Beijing games last summer, draws from a bong.

The glass pipes are generally used to smoke cannabis.

And after sporting chiefs announced laws which mean four-year bans for drug-taking, Phelps’ dreams of adding to his overall 14 gold medal tally at the 2012 games in London could already be OVER.

ASSOCIATED PRESS (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,486396,00.html)

PHELPS CALLS PHOTO OF HIM SMOKING MARIJUANA 'REGRETTABLE'

TAMPA, Fla. —  Olympic great Michael Phelps has acknowledged "regrettable" behavior and "bad judgment" after a photo in a British newspaper showed him smoking marijuana.

In a statement released to The Associated Press, the swimmer who won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Games conceded the authenticity of the exclusive picture published Sunday by the tabloid News of the World.
Phelps said: "I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

"Sorry" might not be enough.

That could be the most expensive "hit" in history.

Is the recording abridge or the whole play? I also own the LP but haven't listened to it for a very long time

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ WELL-HUNG WALLPAPER VIBES FOR DR CILLALIZ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

LOL,thanks TD.  Right after I signed off I remembered that Mercy Heart Hospital was putting on a Heart health expo today and I decided to go.  It was really interesting.  I got a mini carotid artery ultrasound - "it looks beautiful" . Had my blood pressure checked - "it's fabulous" got a free coupon for a cholesterol and glucose check, sat in on a cooking class about the Mediterranean Heart diet.  He made salmon sauteed in olive oil and sauteed vegetables - also in olive oil.

I went to the room where they demo an open heart surgery.  It's with dummys not humans, but was pretty interesting to actually see how it's done up close.   They also had an open question session with a cardiologist that was very interesting and they had other things like listening to your pulse vial ultrasound, a display of pacemakers, a visit to the cardio rehab center (They have a fabulous view while they are riding and walking).

It was really interesting.  I got some freebie giveaways and found out my BMI has gone down about 6 points since I started my diet.  I was very impressed with the whole day.  I've gone to similar things in gyms or whatever, but this one was all in the actual hospital and there were doctors and cardiologists answering questions not just interns or residents.  I was also pleased that all the screening I did do came out very positive.

When I came home I hung most of the wall paper in that bathroom.  I'm just SO sick of that room and I was hungry, so I took a break.   I've considered just leaving the whole mess until tomorrow, but I'm really very close to being done, so I'll go back later and do it.   Then I get to clean...oh joy

I am still agog at the fluffy bits being displayed on the National Stage.

Tne big scandal about 1980 at the National was the Howard Brenton play ROMANS IN BRITAIN which had complete nudity and Roman soldiers raping naked young British lads. The uproar was over subsidizing such "filth."

Well, for God's sake, he's a 23 year-pld jock, not some brain surgeon. No one said the kid was sensible, just a damned good swimmer.

Matt H I am very impressed you have gone TWO MONTHS without chocolate.  I should strive to be as good as you are.  I have been slowly reducing the amount of chocolate I eat (don’t want to go through withdrawal).  I get so sick when I eat too much chocolate you would think it would be easy to give up.

I decided that would be part of my diet plan. It was easier to give up than I thought though, I must admit, if I had some around the house, I'd be tempted to give it a taste. (Well, I do have brownie mix on the shelf, but I keep that in case someone asks me to bring a dessert to a dinner party at the last minute.)

Next, I watched THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL. It is a weird allegorical work, or a big joke on pretentious critics who try to read insight into what is meant to be simply a weird tale. Not quite sure what I make of it. Will have to think some more on it before I start writing it up.

The transfer looked very nice for the most part, but the sound was fairly weak, filled with hiss and some early phasing problems during the credits.

It's a two disc set, and the only other item on the first disc was the trailer which makes the movie look like it might be a murder mystery. What a joke!

The second disc has the other bonus items. The first is a biographical documentary on Buńuel that's actually longer than the film itself! I got about forty minutes of it watched with 58 minutes left. It looked like there were two other features on the disc which I'll also watch when I go back down. I should have some time tonight to watch some of the other stuff on the DVR.

James Ivory said that they had quite a time with her on THE WILD PARTY, and not in a good way...

We just came home friend visiting friends in Marietta, and getting my 1990 Corolla inspected. (It passed!) Our friends had a lot of concerns about the Zombie movie that is going to be filming in their house this month. Since it stars Woody Harrelson, it apparently must have a good budget, so I think they'll be OK. But we were able to give them an idea of what it might be like.

A friend of mine in WOMAN OF THE YEAR said she was great when she came into the show during Bacall's vacation, and I thought she was much better than Ms Bacall who stank and still won a Tony. He said that after she took over the role, however, she became impossible, and I gather she was difficult on VICTOR VICTORIA as well.

Not as big of a deal, but my mother found some savings bonds that were bought in the 80's. They had my name and my brother's name on them. She thought she had bought them and gave them to me to cash so my brother and I could split it. My brother could use the cash since construction work has been down lately.

It turned out that these were bonds HE purchased and I guess he gave them to my mom to keep track of and she forgot about them. So it was even better for him and I cashed them and gave him all the paperwork---I was very excited about the rate of return and he was VERY happy to have the cash, which I gave to him at Christmas.

Yesterday I got my tax statement from my bank. I didn't realize that since I did the cashing, I would have to pay taxes on the interest (almost $500!). I don't have the heart to ask him to pay it, but I wish I'd realized that and let him cash them!

LOL, not sure  I'm going to watch. I need to run to the store and this seems to be as good a time as any.

I finished the wall paper and put the towel bar and mirror back up. All the bathroom needs is a chair rail, a shelf and maybe a picture to hang on the wall and it's done.  Whew!

Looking over last year's bank statements is so depressing: the stocks my mom left me were worh a lot in May 2008 and now they're worth a 10th of it. My IRA is down to little more than 50% and I ran across the offer to sell the property in May that my greedy brothers turned down for being too little. Fuckemall!

As I was reading I thought, oh no you didn't cash them.

I have the book I’m reading & the movie we watched, “1408”, to thank for the plot of last night’s nightmare.  I’ll jump to the end of the nightmare.

I’m happily walking along my usual hiking trail when I realize it is getting darker & darker & suddenly I’m wondering why I’m out hiking at night, & without Sherlock.  Up ahead in the creek I see men with flashlights.  To my right, coming out of the creek, I spy a man.  At first I casually say hello & then realize he is the REALLY bad guy from earlier in my dream.  As he began to head in my direction I began to move as quickly as possible to get out of there.  I kept telling myself I know this trail & I won’t fall.  As I was doing my best to navigate the trail the “bad guy” was getting closer & closer.  I wanted to scream for the men with the flashlights to help me before the “bad guy” could hurt me, only I couldn’t scream.  My moaning & yelping noises woke Keith who in turn woke me. ;D

For awhile I could truly feel the terror of the dream.  It all came back to me today when we hiked that stretch of the trail.  I pointed out the area & described it all to Keith.

I watched the West Coast production of Doctor Atomic and I must say that although some of the femme roles were played/sung better - overall, I liked the Metropolitan production.  The design and staging and particularly the payoff at the end was heart stopping and tremendous at the Met....and I am hoping this production comes out on DVD - although since we have this one (with way too many close ups), we not get another.

WNET just rebroadcast Doctor Atomic earlier today. From what I understand, The Met's production will also be released on DVD after the end of the current season.  -As will the other operas that have been a part of their HD broadcasts.

You're very welcome, DR JRand.  I just hope that the recent budget "adjustments" that The Met has had to make to next season's line-up won't affect their DVD releases.  -I think the new production of Le Damnation de Faust worked better on screen than it did live.  All that technology was meant for technology, I guess.

"Little Eyolf" was my friend's directing thesis project in college, so I was more or less immersed in that world via osmosis for a few months. ;)

The names were all very English, as it's set in fifties Britain.  The weirdest change was the strange lady with the odd prophetic gifts was turned into a fifties rocker with leather jacket and greased hair.  The whole reconception was just a mess.

There is a great TV version of Little Eyolf with Anthony Hopkins, Diana Rigg, and Peggy Ashcroft in the boxed DVD BBC set of Ibsen plays.  Ibsen's psychology is just remarkable sound and true today.  It's like he, as a dramatist, is making the same psychological inroads that Freud and Jung were at about the same time.

This was Britain's resident Puritan Mary Whitehouse who made the stink and actually prosecuted the director and playwright I believe.  I've read the play and you wonder in this day and age what all the fuss was about.  I believe it was revised a few years back (not at the National) with hardly any eyebrows lifted at all.

I agree. The football game was crazy in the 4th quarter. A lot of screaming and cheers.

Arizona was not even in the game till the 4th quarter. But it seems to happen a lot that teams get momentum. My brother-in-law was sweating.

That touchdown run for pittsburgh right before half time was unbelievable. And that last touchdown was too. I can't believe that guy had both his feet in. Amazing! Very exciting game.

I saw everything but the half-time show (i was putting my niece to bed).

at 3 1/2 she watched the first half with interest. She watched almost every minute. And asked what happened a lot. And when pittsburgh would score she would give her daddy a big high five and a hug.

Has always been one of my favorite musicals. I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I finally found the soundtrack LP many years ago in a record store in Manhattan. One of my happiest days was finally getting a decent copy of the film on laserdisc in widescreen (even though MGM cheated on the letterbox and didn't frame it well). The DVD I have now gets played often.

I had a full evening of viewing trying to clear off the DVR as much as possible for an upcoming week with lots of new episodes of favorite TV shows.

But first I finished the bonus features on THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL. I thought it was funny that in the interview with the top billed actress in the movie, she admitted neither she nor any of the other actors knew what the movie was about when they were making it and still don't know all these years later. I had the same reaction. I had my own interpretation, but I'm sure it was just my own judgments.

Thanks so much for asking!

:)

Congrats!  That's a great weight loss

One of my favorite things about the Super Bowl was that NBC had a ton of ads for their shows tomorrow. I loved the promos. Especially happy to see MEDIUM will be back tomorrow. And the commercials for 3D CHUCK looked good too!

All those promos,,,,,does that mean they didn't sell the commercial time???

I should also mention the wonderful women of Home - Mona Washbourne and Dandy Nichols - they were also great.  But Richardson and Gielgud - you just don't see their like anymore - there's so much history there, and watching them is like reading a textbook on great acting.

I began my evening watching Thursday night's SMALLVILLE. A Lana  Lang-centric episode. Gag. And now that she's "Supergirl," what's next?

When I saw that production on (I guess it was) PBS, I was mesmerized. Haven't seen it again in many years.

I'm watching a strange little low-budget film - not too great, but it's Rod Steiger, Burt Reynolds, and Tom Berenger, and they're enjoyable.  What's not enjoyable is seeing what Mr. Reynolds has done to his face.  Appalling.

Next I watched an episode of THE STARTER WIFE from Universal-HD. This was the episode where Molly fell back into bed with her ex- Kenny. The movie parodies they sprinkle through the show are sometimes very funny and sometimes lame.

Forgot to mention.....

I saw Slumdog Millionaire today...

I wasn't bowled over it. I liked it but it wasn't what people made it out to be.

Also do the Academy members get lyrics to the two songs nominated?

One is "Bollywood" style song at the end and the other I don't  remember where it was used.

The Academy has honored Greek, French, Spanish and Italian songs before but don't know what they did for those songs.

I don't understand why stars do this. We all know how long they've been around, and for them to try to shave 20+ years, well, it just doesn't work and it makes them look like aliens.

Earlier, I got an e-mail that made me feel very good.  I love getting stuff like this out of the blue -

Hi Bruce – This is not so much a question….but a comment.   Since it was first released, I’ve had a copy of the 2006 cast recording.   I still love it as much as the first time I heard it – and trust me, I’ve just about worn that CD paper thin.

In 2007, I was in NY in September when “The Brain from Planet X” was part of NYMF.  I saw it as many times as I could -  A very clever, fun show that my friends and I still talk about.    We quote it, sing it, and laugh.   Since I’ve enjoyed it so much,  I wanted to personally thank you for having pulled this together and remind you of a legacy of laughter that has reached and affected folks you may never know.

Thank You,

Next I watched WEdnesday night's LIFE ON MARS. I generally enjoyed the episode and there was a great "what the hell?" reveal at the end of the episode. Funny.

Well, that's the problem, you see.  I didn't really know anything about the film when I saw it - I'd read just a couple of things, but hadn't heard the buzz and therefore just saw what was on the screen.  People can't stop trying to make these things sound like the second coming.  It's a nice film that achieves everything it set out to achieve.

And I concluded my evening viewing with a second episode of THE STARTER WIFE. This was the one that revealed the identity of Molly's stalker. But now the Judy Davis character is missing, so a new mystery to unravel.

In Mr. Reynold's case it's really not good work.  He finally got his toupee right (very real looking), but totally screwed up his face all in the name of vanity.

I think the next film in my review queue is the Blu-ray of PRETTY WOMAN. If it isn't that, it's the Blu-ray of Spike Lee's MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA. One of those will be my work project tomorrow.

While I advise saving instead of spending, & have been doing so, I'm also planning a big splurge.  We have decided 40 years of marriage deserves a romantic location & a big splurge. Plus we reserved the pet sitter last June.

Craig is encouraging us to go to his favorite spot, Greece.  The Amalfi Coast looks very romantic.  Barcelona (Craig's second choice) is supposed to be one of the most beautiful cities.  Has anyone been to any of these spots?

I've been to all three. My first choice by far would be the Amalfi Coast, particularly Positano. It's relaxed, laid back, and very romantic. Great local food (and vegitarian dishes are plentiful - the Mom and Pop restaurants will also be glad to oblige with special orders).  There is also a lot to see and do on day trips - Pompeii, Herculaneum, Capri, Sorrento.

Barcelona has pretty architecture, but it is a big, bustling commercial city  - with traffic as bad as Rome.

Well, I uninstalled the original McAfee from my computer and when I went to Comcast.net to reinstall the new McAfee, I got a screen "Action Cancelled.  Internet Explorer was unable to link to the Web page you requested. The page might be temporarily unavailable."  I tried several things and nothing worked.  Finally, I called Comcast customer service and spoke to someone who had difficulty understanding me (I had to spell my last name FOUR times), but eventually she got it.  Anyway, it turns out that since I only have Windows 2000 AND only 228 MB of RAM, my computer is incompatible with the new McAfee. :P I have to totally upgrade everything for it to work, but what that means is that right now, I have no virus protection!  I uninstalled the original McAfee and I don't have the original installation disc!  My sister's boyfriend built my computer, but it was several years ago.  Hopefully, he has something that will work.

I'm slowly catching up...

Happy Birthday to Victor Herbert!!  And thanks for the e-mail, Larry!!  I wondered what it was for. :D

DR MATTH - if you would like an anaglyph DVD of Kiss Me Kate that might work on your TV....send me your snail mail.

It's okay....and better than nothing.

I think I will just stick with Brent Barrett's KISS ME KATE.  It isn't perfect - but he is!

Yes, he is...I saw him in Kiss Me, Kate! in London. ;D

Hi all!  Just popping in for a quick moment.  Things are progressing with the house but not as fast as I would like.

I do hope to be home by Valentines day.  At least that is the plan.

I also hope that everyone here is doing well.

Thank you so much for the DVD, DR George!  I haven't had time to watch it yet but it is on my "to do" list.  A list that seems to grow with each passing day.  :)

Yay!  I'm glad you got it.

I have one word for you: Mac

And I have an answer - vulnerability to internet intrusions is platform independent; I don't know about modern Macs, but modern PCs usually come with Firewall Protection installed, or it is available in most security packages.

The problem is that my PC is not a modern PC. ::)
