We were on "urgent" notice a couple of hours ago.  We are now downgraded to "alert". the knowledge that fires are so close is even scarier at night.  Colin and I went through this 25 years ago - in some ways it makes it worse.

Thank you for your thoughts DRs.  There will be no sleep tonight.

Saturday morning greetings!  Today Richard and I are going to a fundraiser for the local historical society (he's on the board).  It's an antique appraisal event - each ticket holder can take one item for the expert to evaluate.  We're taking Richard's great great grandfather's Civil War diary and a piece of Rookwood pottery.

TOD - September 14, 2008, when Hurricane Ike paid a visit to the Ohio Valley.  We expect snowstorms, tornados, flooding from time to time, but hurricane force winds and the ensuing damage were totally unexpected.  Funny thing, the gardening expert I saw on TV last week said the damage from last week's ice storm would have been worse if the trees hadn't lost so many branches in the hurricane.

Good morning, all! I slept late, to be awakened by an Amazon.com shipment. So, I decided I'd slept long enough, bathed, and had my oatmeal. I believe that most of the day I'll be working on final edits for BABES IN TOYLAND, until I get bored and breakdown to defrost the refrigerator. First, this week's meds.

The week on the Cast Recordng List they were passing around links to sites with 10" lps and children's recordings and I spent some time last night downloading three recordings, Carol Chaning's funny revue SHOW GIRL which includes her history of musical comedy with its great Rodgers & Hammerstein parody ("This was a darn fine funeral"), Ginger Rogers' recording of ALICE IN WONDERLAND, and the New York City Ballet Orchestra's recording of Hershy Kay's Balanchine ballet WESTERN SYMPHONY. Of Hershy's three great City Ballet scores, the other two being STARS AND STRIPES and CAKEWALK, this one has never been released on CD.

TOD: Several years ago, we had two forest fires in the norther part of Arizona, both human caused, that were really bad. They eventually joined together, which made it even worse. I was called for disaster relief work, but I had to turn it down because I had plans to go visit DR Megan. Instead, I was on the team to go up and evaluate. There were still smoky spots and the fire wasn't completely out (but had gone through the area we were in). It must have been terrifying to be there when the fires were burning.

TOD...

I can't remember what year it was, exactly.  I do know I was living in Fullerton, Orange County, CA.  I hadn't met der B yet.  And it was Christmas.

The family was gathering at my parent's place, in Sonora, CA.  I was going to take the train up to Modesto, which was as close as I could get, and Dad was going to pick me up and drive me in the rest of the way.  My sister was driving westward from Oklahoma, where she was teaching college-level geography.

Or, at least, that was the plan.

Unfortunately, somewhere along the line, I think in Arizona, my sister managed to flip her car over on the highway.  She totalled the car.  Dad had to drive down and find her, and drive her the rest of the way to the homestead.

So, instead of Dad picking me up, the job was left to Mom.  Grandma, who was living with my parents, would simply have to cope on her own for the few hours Mom was away.  At that time, she was still healthy enough to cope pretty well.

The problem was, that particular Christmas was a stormy one.  We got hit by rain, and I mean a constant downpour, the night Mom drove to Modesto to pick me up.  And it's all country roads, dark and windy.

I'd packed light, fortunately, so it didn't take but a moment to move my bag into the car when Mom arrived at the train station.  (Did I mention that I love trains?  I love trains.)  And we started the trek to the homestead in Sonora.

And the rain poured down.

And down.

And down some more.

And the roads were windey, and we couldn't see very well, and there were spots where we slowed down to ten MPH trying to see where the road was.

And that's a good thing, because all of a sudden Mom hit the brakes.

There was a cow in the middle of the road.

The cow was just standing there.  I suppose she was trying to figure out what to do with all this rain coming down.  She was caught in our headlights, and just stared at us.

We stared right back.

There really wasn't anything else we could do.

Honking at the cow wasn't going to change the situation.  I've yet to encounter a cow that reacted to a honk from a car horn.  Really, I haven't.

So we all waited a few minutes.  The rain was really coming down, and Mom and I were kind of sorry for the cow, having to stand there in the pelting rain like she was.  Not that we were going to invite her into the car, mind you.

Eventually, the rain let up a bit, and the cow decided to move on, out of our way.  We drove past her, and never saw her again.

Now, wasn't that exciting!

Oh, Dad and my sister arrived at the homestead the next day.  No cows in their story.  She, of course, had to make her experience the more exciting and dramatic, and poo-pooed our tale as meaningless.

Grandma was just glad that we were all safe.

And, later, after we had all tired of my sister's tale of woe, she pulled me aside and said "That cow was sure lucky!"

The End.

I have. That time a couple years ago at Crawdad Camp when we slid around in the mud. I got out of the car and ran flailing my arms and yelling. They (the cows) looked at me like I was a nut (no comments, please) and sauntered off the muddy road.

I have never been through this sort of fire, but years ago, when I lived in the country the farmer across the street did a "Controlled burn" with absolutely no control.  There was a wall of flames that was right across the road from my house.  I was terrified.  I still remember it like it was yesterday,. The fire department came out and said "This was registered as a controlled burn" and turn around and left.  They burned acres that day. Luckily no houses.   Somewhere I have a photo of the fire truck leaving and the flames are shooting higher than the firetruck

Worst weather story.

While I was still teaching, it began snowing really hard early one morning after I had gotten to school. The kids were already there, but the day had barely begun when school officials canceled school and the buses began arriving to take the kids back home. Of course, we had to stay until all kids were gone, but they were all gone by 10 a.m. However, school officials wouldn't let teachers leave until noon.

Now, I lived almost 40 miles to the north of where I taught, and I begged my principal to let me leave; the radio reports were describing how bad the roads were, and I knew it would take me hours to get home driving 15-20 mph. No dice. Around noon, they finally let us go. Snow was still falling heavily and it was also some sleet mixed in which made the roads even more treacherous. Anyway, I was driving very slowly and at about 10 miles out of town, a car fairly far ahead of me jammed on brakes and, naturally, began sliding and weaving all over the road. It startled me so much I touched my breaks and my car began to do likewise. I was turning the wheel trying to regain control of the car (not having much experience driving in extreme weather and with no chains on my tires), but my car was sliding ever closer to a ravine with a big dropoff into a rather large creek. I was PETRIFIED. I continued trying to get the car under control and thankfully, the car began going across the road into the median instead where it came to a stop facing in the opposite direction I had been driving.

I had to wait about an hour for someone to come along with a chain to pull me out of the median, but thankfully that happened, and I got home with no further problems. For a minute, though, I was sure my car was going to be at the bottom of that creek.

That's a SCARY story, DR Matt!!!!

I was more scared during that than during Hurricane Hugo in 1989 though after I saw the devastation Hugo wrought to the city (trees through people's houses, roofs torn off; I had two downed branches in my yard), I should have been much more terrified of Hugo. Now, the slightest wind makes me tremble in fear of the two huge pine trees I have in my front yard.

TOD - When I was about 7 or 8 years old we were in a tornado.  I remember being at my Aunt and Uncle's house at the lake and we were grilling burgers when my dad arrived and said he had driven in from the West and had seen a tornado.  We turned on the radio to a local station. they had a weather man named Eldon Kanago, but we called him "tornado Kanago" because he had this deep frightening tone to his voice and played some sounds effects in the background.

anyway, they didn't have a basment so when he said "TAKE SHELTER NOW!!!!  TAKE SHELTER NOW!!!!" my dad and Uncle went outside to watch.  My grandmother and aunt took me to the neighbors saying "We've got to get this little girl somewhere safe" (I don't remember that, my mom does)  I got very worried about my dad and I ran upstairs and outside draggin Mrs. Beasley along with me.   When I got outside there was a tornado on the other side of the lake (about a mile or two away)  I will never forget seeing that.  It didn't hit where we were but did a lot of damage nearby.

Let's see, when I was living at the lake in the late 90s, we had another huge storm. This time it was looking awful out. The predictions were for hail and tornados.  When the sirens went off, I wrapped Petey,. my cat, in a blanket grabbed a new laptop, my purse and a radio and headed to the basement.  The warnings were dire so for the first time I went under the stairs.   All of a sudden I started hearing the softball sized hail crashing into my house!  I could hear breaking glass, it was very frightening.

The hail damaged my roof, siding, all the eaves troughs, broke the windows out on the north side of my house and even poked holes in the mini blinds.

Lately, I've been fascinated by ice.

Der B and I have been here in Delaware for five years now, but this is the first winter that I've really had time to discover ice.  As in iced-over puddles.

This has a lot to do with my job.  When I'm at the cash register, and on a break (or lunch) the first thing I've got on my mind is to get off of my feet, sit down, take a load off.

But this is my first winter where I'm working at a desk job.  All of a sudden, the reverse is true, where what I want to do is stretch my legs during a break, take a walk around the building, and inspect what is happening to those large puddles in the dirt next to the store.

Puddles that freeze over when it's really cold.

This is the kind of stuff kids discover when they are little, normally.  Assuming they are little where freezing is common during the winter.

But I, like BK, grew up in sunny, balmy (and very rarely wet, and never freezing) Los Angeles.

So the idea of puddles freezing over when it is cold is a very new thing to me.

So, I walk over to this very large puddle to the side of the store, formed by the delivery trucks that park there sometimes, and it's freezing over.

And I test how thick the ice is that has formed on the puddle.

And sometimes it is very thin.

And sometimes it takes a bit of my weight before it starts to c-r-a-c-k.

And sometimes I can stand on the ice, and it doesn't crack.

NEATO!!!

What's even wilder is when some of the smaller puddles have iced over, but not completely, and the water under the ice has perculated down into the dirt and what is left is this layer of ice with nothing under it, and if you step on it it goes s-h-a-t-t-e-r like glass.

I feel like a kid again!

Good morning.  When i read in my yahoo headlines about the Aussie fires, I came straight here to make sure Tom and Colin were safe.  VIBES to them and all their friends and neighbors that there are no more deaths reported and the fires are under control soon.  How awfully scary.

TOD - We are blessed with rather mild weather in the good ol' Pacific Northwest.  We are not prone to hurricanes, tornados, blizzards, or other winter storms of the intensity that the rest of the country tends to see.  I did go through the earthquake back in college, 01, I think, but it was more fascinating than scary.  The recent flooding was just a pain in the rear.  I missed St Helens by about a year.  Someday Rainer is going to blow and take the entire Sound with it, but I may or may not be around for that.  I suppose a few of the times driving the mountain passes in snow storms have been pretty darn scary, but that's due more to the other drivers on the road...

Weather horror stories?

This didn't happen to me.  It happened to one of my neighbors when I lived in Calabasas.

It was in the late 1970s or early 1980s.  We had a MAJOR downpour; went on for days.

My neighbor was driving on the Ventura Fwy, out in Calabasas, and the freeway got so flooded that his car started to float away.  He managed to get out of the car before it was swept down the freeway.

This guy was a very conservative, rational man, not prone to exaggeration, so I tend to believe the story...even though it does sound like the kind of stuff that I might write.

Started the morning with the most delightful WEEK-END IN HAVANA! I don't know how I managed to miss this movie all of these years but I am very grateful to DR JRand for gifting it to me! It was hilarious, and that 1940s Latin music was out of this world good! And the gowns were Wow!

Just a fun, fun movie...reminded me a bit of BLONDIE GOES LATIN which was made at about the same time.

And of course John Payne is certainly one of the most attractive actors of the 1940s...he and Dennis Morgan are my two faves from that era!

Would have a tough time choosing between the two!

There is just something about them...

TOD:  Hurricane Gloria in September 1985 .  I was working weekends  in a restaurant on teh water on the South Shore of Long Island, working as a real estate agent with all of my listings ina flood zone and going to school at NYU while living in a basement apartment with no windows.

We lost electricity for a week, the restaurant fell into the Great South Bay, and all my real estate listings  were full of water and fallen trees.

I ended up moving into my then boyfriend's house along with his family (they all had their own homes but only he had gas, we all had electric.) We all brought the contents of our freezers and cooked everything and we were able to even have hot showers because of the gas water heater.

At night we played board games and cards by the light of a lantern.  When I went into NYU for classes everyone was pooh poohing the weathermen for making sucha big deal when nothing happened

I told them to look 30 miles east that's where all the action was!

I remember that ice storm DAW, it was in '77 I believe.  I was attending the local community college at the time.  We kept all the food outside in a cooler and cooked over the barbeque

My then boyfriend's Dad took some wonderful close up pictures of the tree branches encased in ice.  Some where I still have some of those shots.

VixMom, I admit I was one of the poo-poohers about Hurricane Gloria in 1985. There was nothing in Manhattan (except for some rain) and we all know that the entire world revolves around Manhattan  ;) Why would we be worried. It rained. As Lotte Lenya says in Cabaret, "So What?" Well, I stand corrected. I didn't know it was that bad away from our little corner of the world. I'll have to ask Anthony if he has memories of it. I didn't know him then (10 years before we met) and he was living on Long Island with his parents.

We've returned from the antique appraisal event.  We decided at the last minute to take different items:  a piece of Roseville pottery that my parents received as a wedding present and the original Herbert Fall oil painting of the Palmer Mill that hangs in our dining room.  The pottery has "intrinsic value" (aka worthless).  The painting, while having some monetary value, is priceless to us and of great interest to the appraiser for the story behind it and the frame (also probably handmade by the artist).

It was a very interesting day - we learned a lot and laughed a lot.

Vienna is all of a zither but we have survived the night..  Unfortunately some people have not.  Many many homes have been destroyed.  Fires are still burning our of control - we have some rain here at the moment - thunder and lightning as well!    Fires can create their own mini storm systems and the lightning feeds back into the fires.

Yes Walzing Matilda was inded used for On The Beach.  It was of course filmed in Melbourne and at Black Rock. (about 45 minutes drive from here).

I think it was Ava who said Melbourne was as good a place as any to film the end of the world.  That was interpreted by many as an insult.

Frank Sinatra's line (years later) about Australian female journalists being the hookers of the press was received less well.

My ancestors were from Scotland and Wales Dear Reader Laura.  Free settlers.

Colin's great great grandfather was transported for sheep stealing.  The mother of his many children came to Tasmania on the first ship of free women settlers - probably from the work houses etc of England.

Colin's sheep stealing ancestor was a skilled stone mason whose labours were much appreciated.  One of the small towns north of Hobart has much of his work classified as historically important etc.  There is even a room in a local Inn named for him - the John King room.

I doubt "pride" is relevant in either case DR Jane.

The "fallen" sons of the aristocracy were sent to New Zealand to start afresh, Australian settlers were usually from backgrounds of poverty - many of course from Ireland.

Two leprochans have a bet. To settle their bet, they take it to a convent. Mother Suprior answers the door, and says "Oh my goodness! Its a leprochan!"

The firt Leprochan replies, "Take it easy sister, I only wanna ask you a qustion. Are there any nuns in your convent that are my size?"

"No, little man, there is no nuns in my convent that are your size."

"Alright then. Are there any nuns in all of Ireland, that are my size?"

"No, little man, there are no nuns in all of Ireland that are your size."

"Alright then. One more question: Are there any nuns in all of the world, that are my size?"

"No, little man, I am quite sure there are no nuns in all of the word that are your size!"

"Okay then." The second leprochan starts laughing his ass off. But through the laughter, he manages to say "You see, I told you slept with a penguin!"

I watched a couple more episodes of FRIDAY THE 13th. One was the best one in the set thus far, a time travel story featuring one of the old magic lantern slide machines. Very unusual and engrossing.

And the best episoide in the set was followed by one of the worst, a sequel to a first season episode about an enchanted compact who could transform the ugly into the beautiful as long as you killed to give it power. Ugh!

I noticed Buckley has a good amount of white on his face which is more common with a blue eyed Berner.  Often they have more white than he does.  I can't tell but his markings look symmetrical or is there more white on the right side of his face?  Would you even notice these things? ;)

I'm back :)

The photo is darling.  Thank you.  I just wish his blue eye wasn't in the shadows.  How light is it? I noticed Buckley has a good amount of white on his face which is more common with a blue eyed Berner.  Often they have more white than he does.  I can't tell but his markings look symmetrical or is there more white on the right side of his face?  Would you even notice these things? ;)

No, but his owner told me that Buckley's mom is going to be in the Westminter dog show in the next few days.
His eye is very light and because of the blue eye they were able to get him at a good price. He is indeed playmates with Otis, the golden doodle next door, who's allowed free reign of our fenced in yard, so I hope onbe day they'll both come over and play.

A huge Bernese Mountain Dog named Otis used to live in town.  Now they have a double blue eyed pup I have yet to see.

I keep hearing about these great deals people purchase their blue eyed pups for.  We certainly didn't get a deal, maybe because we were already hooked.

If Buckley plays at your house I'm sure you will have more photos to share. :)  Of course they will all be shared with Keith.  If you can find out Buckley's Mom, & the kennel name, I will look her up.

I like my sprouts with a dash of Balsamic and lots of cracked black pepper.

I doubt if we could taste a difference between NZ and OZ lamb by the time it travels to the Eastern US.

The local fresh spring lamb is really good.

When we lived in Long Beach CA, there was a "visiting chef" that would set up a charcoal fire pit on your front lawn and roast a whole lamb on a spit. (He showed up early in the morning and dinner was served in late afternoon - the aroma of the fat dripping on the coals made everyboy famished! It was as tasty as the whole pit-baked pig you could order from the Filipino caterers.

Unlike the suckling pig, the lamb was sans head, so you were not subjected to accusing stares.

I may as well reveal that this new novel is the third Adriana Hofstetter mystery.  I was going to do something else this year, but I'm a firm believe in threes and I'm still not sure if my other idea is a novel or novella or just a short story.  Plus, and most importantly, I'd thought of this idea before Murder At The Grove, but it didn't feel like it should be the second book in the series, for reasons that will become clear when you've read it.  So, I had the bones of the story already, and the title, the setting and a few of the characters.  So, that's what I went with and I'm really glad I did.

I watched a BUNCH of episodes tonight, but I stopped trying to count how many. All I know is that I only got about 1/3 of the way through the one I was watching and decided to finish it tomorrow.

After I finish it tomorrow, I will have two more to watch, so I will finished with the set by the end of the afternoon tomorrow. That means I'll be able to use tomorrow night to play catch-up with shows on the DVR before DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES comes on. Should be able to clear a fair number of them off.

Of the episodes I watched tonight, the only one that had a guest star of any repute was one called "The Maestro" featuring Colm Feore as a dance master who drove his dancers to their deaths with his demands.

Tomorrow I'll watch Wednesday night's DAMAGES as I eat lunch. Then I'll finish the remaining FRIDAY episodes. If there's any time left in the afternoon, I'll do THE OFFICE and/or 30 ROCK.

That means Monday I'll be working on HOBSON'S CHOICE and Tuesday will be the Blu-ray of HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3. Wednesday I'll begin the ninth season of MURDER SHE WROTE.

Hmmm another station says they are switching over on Feb 17th too.  So does the delay mean anything if the stations don't delay?

TOD: When I was working in TV in the mid 80's, we worked in a big concrete building with a parking deck. During a flash flood, I drove home, not realizing that it had been raining for hours because you had no sense of the weather outside while you were in the studio. When I left, I hit a large puddle that kept getting deeper...and deeper...

By the time I realized that it was too deep to drive through, and the engine (literally) flooded, I drowned it and escaped through my rolled-down window. Other cars got stuck too, and opened their doors letting the water rush in. (This is when I decided I would never buy a car with electric windows.) I swam up to a liquor store and met a semi-drunk guy who was willing to help tow my car out of the water. When we returned to the car, it was floating and had turned completely around, so we pushed it until the wheels were on the road and then towed it out. It was my first new car and I thought I had destroyed it!

It turned out that the only mishap was a blown engine fuse. But for months, whenever it got hot and the windows were up, it turned into a terrarium.

MattH - Did you get the sense from the Betsy Palmer interview you saw that in retrospect she's happy to have done Friday the 13th, or embarrassed to have done it, or some other kind of feeling towards it?

Almost all of my local stations except one of the PBS affiliates are going to switch on February 17th and have been running banners alerting folks that they're going ahead with the switch. Good decision on their parts.

I think she's very happy to have done it. It let her play something other than the lady next door sweethearts she had played and gave her an acting role after decades of being known as a game show panelist.

She goes to horror conventions dressed in the sweater she wore as Mrs. Vorhees. I think it's a claim to fame for her. She's a major presence in the bonus features on the disc, and in every one of them, she seems enthusiastic about her role in the movie. (She disliked the first sequel intensely and said she never got a script to see what they were doing. She wouldn't have done her few little bits in it if she had known how they were going to be used.)

Good night!

Thanks for that info, Matt.

I remember being startled to see her in that role (I saw the movie its first weekend) and so glad she's having fun with having done it.

Good Evening!

Well... I'm done playing callbacks.. -Nothing like asking an actress who's (also) been up since 7:30 this morning to belt a high-G at 10:00 at night.  But they did it!

I was going to head to bed, but then remembered that Bradley Cooper is hosting SNL tonight, so...

DR MattH - Is this the season of "Friday the 13th" that has the multi-episode arc with the demonic possession? -Some of the episodes take place in a French hospital/asylum? Maybe that was season three (if there was a third season). In any case, I remember those being full of some good scares.

Unless it's in the final two episodes, that must not be this season. It ran five or six years as I recall.

Now that I think of it, it probably was in a later season. -And I think there were only three seasons. *I just checked the IMDB and it says the series ran from 1987-1990, 70 episodes.

And I'm now faintly remembering that the possession arc was also how John D. LeMay (Ryan) was written off the show.  I think. -And he was replaced by the hunky Steve Monarque.  *Of course, one of the main reasons I followed the show originally was John D. LeMay.  ;)  -And I was fascinated by the lead actress' name, "Robey".  In any case...

In Richmond, the show was carried by the NBC affiliate, and came on after "SNL".  However, when I would go home to Fairfax, it was carried by the ABC affiliate, but it seemed to float on their schedule.  And sometimes, they would repeat an episode from one week to the next.  ???

OK... I'm babbling... Next post...

I know.  -Which is why I don't feel too bad about staying up late(r) tonight.  ;)

-Not a bad show so far.  And Bradley Cooper sure is dreamy.  ::)

Back from one-act musicals and one-act play.  The play, which ran about thirty-five minutes and seemed like thirty-five hours, was possibly the worst thing I've ever seen.  About Vincent and Theo - how original.  Awful.  The two one-act musicals were sort of head scratchers - not bad but no real reason to be musicals.

Thanks for the congrats.  I tell you, the last day of writing every book I've done is such a feeling of elation and exhaustion and craziness - and I always do it like this, a huge number of pages on the last day.

I am soooooooooo pissed off at myself.  I gave the worst performance I have given in I-can't-even-remember number of years.  Naturally, it was the night that the two critics were there.  It was like a self-fulfilling prophecy.  I know that this one critic does not like my work, so what do I do?  I give him a performance not to like.  Damn it to Hell!

Wow, that was fast!  Cogratulations to BK (or is it 8K?).

Good morning.  When i read in my yahoo headlines about the Aussie fires, I came straight here to make sure Tom and Colin were safe.  VIBES to them and all their friends and neighbors that there are no more deaths reported and the fires are under control soon.  How awfully scary.

~~~CONTINUED VIBES FOR TOMOVOZ AND COLIN AND ALL DOWN UNDER!!~~~
The worst weather was about 10 or 15 years ago (I can't remember exactly when).  We had an ice storm like I'd never seen before, nor have I experienced anything like it since!  There was ice on EVERYTHING!  I didn't lose power for very long, but I was on the same grid as a retirement community and the local hospital, so I was VERY lucky.  My sister lost power for about a week!  My parents only lost power for a couple of days (and they have a wood-burning stove...very warm and toasty), so my sister and niece went to my parents' house.
