Today (after I get some sleep), I have absolutely no plans...except to watch the last three episodes of "Battlestar Galactica."  It's the final season and I can't miss any episodes.  Later tonight (at 7:00 pm), I'm going to a friend's house for a play reading.  The theater group that put on Reefer Madness! The Musical! wants to have their next couple of seasons sketched out and one show that they're very strongly considering is something I've never heard of (which is not surprising...it's not a musical ;)):  "Poona the F*ckdog and Other Plays for Children (http://www.jeffgoode.com/pgpoo.htm)" :o

We'll see what this is all about. :D

To quote myself from a bout a year ago or so:

"Loved loved loved Bridget Hanley in SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY in L.A. about six years ago!"

Interesting that Bridget Hanley was alternating in that production with Lee Meriwether, and some people in the lobby were openly disappointed not to see Lee Meriwether, who was in the pictures in reviews, so they hadn't known about the alternation - but Bridget Hanley totally won these folks over.  A few people who had seen both several times (the show had a cult following to an extent, it seemed) said both were equally superb.

Good morning, all! I slept quite poorly with very peculiar dreams and it was a relief when the alarm went off to drag myself out of bed. My Finale lesson has been moved to tomorrow morning so I think I'll take my walk and settle in for a long day of edits. I still need to defros the refrigerator and I may do that later in the afternoon.

I am very much looking forward to the next Adriana mystery. Has anyone read any of the "Aunt Dimity" series of mysteries? I just heard about them and they sound very strange.

Before my walk, I have to make the bed and tidy up the apartment.

We have our monthly board meeting today, so maybe I can push the director of ARSENIC AND OLD LACE to give me his director's comments so we can finish that section of the website.

Also taking some of my Goodwill treasures down to the costume co-ordinator, and hoping that we get a size six Bianca in KISS ME KATE....or even a size six Lilli.....

If any DR would like to follow the latest reports from Australia...

-Go to http://search.Twitter.com
-In the search field, enter either "#vicfires" or "#bushfires". -The # denotes a "hashtag".
-The search results should include some news links, as well as some "tweets", reports from people close to the fires.

Bridget is one of the most charming, delightful people that I know.  She's a fine actress, who has always put family over career.

We were at the University of Washington Drama Department together, and when she came to Los Angeles, I became her publicist.

I know two more episodes of THE STARTER WIFE recorded off Universal-HD this morning. I will watch DAMAGES at lunchtime and possibly 30 ROCK or THE OFFICE at the end of the afternoon if there is time before I come up to finish the review and get it posted.

Yes, it is quite lovely outside today. My walk up Riverside Drive was quite delightful and the view of the Hudson was clear and bright and beautiful. I walked up to 100th Street and down West End Avenue. I stopped at the market, came back, defrosted the fridge, and began chicken soup.  Everything's boiling away, and the apartment smells wonderful, like a Jewish grandmother's kitchen.

Ive been listening to the 1986 premiere performance of my restoration of JUBILEE and I wish Encores! would do it. The role of Karen O'Kane, based on Ginger Rogers, who sings "Begin the Beguine" and "Just One Of Those Things" is a perfect role for Kristen Chenowith. And, if encores! did it, perhaps we'd finally get a commercial recording of the show.

Vixdad drove me to the Sunken Meadow Beach on the north shore of Long Island.  We walked down to the boardwalk and looked at the sea for a while.  Very beautiful but windy so back in the car we went,

Then we just drove through some of the nicer neighbohoods on the north shore of Long Island for a littel bit.   It was nice to get out of the house

It is a beautiful sunny day.  All the snow and ice on our lawn has melted. I hear the temps are due to go back down again tonight and all next week.  Oh well.

And, who knows? Maybe you actually ended up "fooling" the reviewer this time. ;)

Triple sorry.

The reviewers I have stopped caring about, but there were people last night who flew in from Texas to see the show, as well as a lot of Tacoma friends; so I was just very disappointed in myself.

Back from the store.  Weather can't make up it's mind.  It was clearing up when I started the long jog - it was totally gray when I got the the three and a half mile mark and it drizzled the rest of the way.  Then the sun came out, then it was gray, now it's half and half.

DR DRUXY was Miss Frances Farmer a topic of conversation in the theatre department at the University of Washington?

Never.  I was there in the late 1950s-early 1960s.  She was long gone.

Glenn Hughes was still head of the Drama Dept. while I was there.

Did he still stand around with one hand in his suit jacket pocket?   ;D

I, not being a Jew, only know about Jewish grandmother's kitchens from what I read. And in BK's Benjamin Kritzer books, the Jewish grandmother's kitchen smelled of canned salmon and something else -- vinegar?

Well, don't beat yourself up too much, DR TCB. It happens to us all at one time or another. On the night when the greatest number of friends I ever had come see me in a show, I had the HARDEST time with my lines when I did TWELVE ANGRY MEN. I loved the show so much and my part was perfect for me. Every OTHER performance was smooth as silk, but NOT that night.

Then, I finished the 2 1/2 episodes I had left to watch. DR Jose, the episode about occult possession of Ryan was the season finale. I don't think there is a story arc because I think when the next season starts, Ryan is gone.

My favorite of the episodes today was one concerning a leather bomber jacket owned by a Japanese kamikaze pilot. If the wearer smeared blood from a fresh kill on it, it would make the person invisible. I prisoner was using it to enter and leave prison. A really interesting episode, not scary so much as suspenseful.

I ended my afternoon watching Thursday night's 30 ROCK. It was the best episode of the season. Jon Hamm guest starred as Liz's neighbor who she tries to trick to fall for her. He's SO adorable. The "b" story had to do with Alec Baldwin played dual roles: as Jack and as the star (gay in real life) of a Spanish telenovella series. It too was very funny. And the "c" story was OK with Tracy hanging out with some Wall Street types hired by NBC as assistants because they can't get jobs on Wall Street any more.

DR Tomovoz, if you get an evacuation order, you and Colin please get out of there. Please don't stay and try to fight the fire with a garden hose (people here try to do that).

Evacuation orders are not likely to arrive Dear Reader Laura.  There is just no-one to give them.  We have to leave well before the fire hits - fortunately radio communications are excellent. (if you have power and are awake).

It is way too dangerous to leave in a vehicle when the fires are near.  We do have basic fire evacuation plans etc but the Fire itself plays no heed to rules and patterns of behavior.  No doubt many of the people lost did what "rules" would recommend.

I was just feeding the birds this morning and my thought went to the wild life out there.

We have a large wild life sanctuary zoo in the Yarra Valley - Many of the "residents" have been shifted to the Melbourne Zoo.  So many of the species at the Healsville sanctuary are on the endangered list.  They have even rescued "eggs".

I think the area is "Safe" for the moment.

Is that why so many people have lost their lives in this?  The numbers are mind boggling.  Do you have escape routes planned?  Don't get trapped in a car either.  When we moved here the fire marshall came up & told us to stay put if a fast moving fire comes up towards us.  He said since our only way out is down it is safer in the house.

To the NYC area DR's - or any DR who may know otherwise...

I've been browsing my CD collection over the past couple of weeks, and I've realized that I have a whole bunch of CDs that deserve a "better home".  There are a slew that I bought just for "reference purposes" when I was doing more Classical accompanying, and I know that I have not listened to them in years(!).  Is there a place in NYC that buys CDs?  I'm not looking to make a profit or anything like that.  I just want to free up some shelf space and get rid of some "clutter".  I'd say I'd have at least 150-200 that I know I could easily part with at this time.

*I know I could do the e-Bay and Craigslist thing, but I rather take a whole box of them someplace and drop them off, rather than have to list everything on a website.

If you want to drag them down to Academy, they buy things. Since you have so many you may want to call before hand

Academy Records and CDs (http://www.academy-records.com/)

and give them an idea of what you have, classical, show, film, vocals, etc.

They may not buy everything and they will look at each CD to check for scratches, etc, unless they are still shrinkwrapped but it's worth a try.

Not to be rude, but if I did know of a source, I would have answered you on your original inquiry. There used to be several OP magazine shops around 43rd Street and 8th, now long gone, but I've never seen a source for newspapers.

DR DRUXY was Miss Frances Farmer a topic of conversation in the theatre department at the University of Washington?

Never.  I was there in the late 1950s-early 1960s.  She was long gone.

Glenn Hughes was still head of the Drama Dept. while I was there.

Did he still stand around with one hand in his suit jacket pocket?   ;D

Do you expect me to remember that after 50 years?

I do remember that he was a bit of a grouch.

DR Jose, I think Bradley Cooper is dreamy, too. I thought so when he co-starred on ALIAS and was crushed when his Fox sitcom got canceled during its first season.
Yeah, well, bad writing will do that to a series.

The only reason I know is because of archived video from TIYL--he stood there in quite the continental fashion describing Frances' epic sized shoulder chip.  :)

Today I saw METAMORPHOSES at The Pittsburgh Public Theater.
Before the show, I went to Eides, a great comic book, music and dvd store where I picked up GOODBYE MR. CHIPS and THE YELLOW ROLLS ROYCE for a pittance.  Their prices are great, but, I usually trade there, these were mere purchases.
Being about forty minutes early to meet my friends, I roamed the streets of downtown with my camera in hand.

Then we saw the show, and what a show it was!  Beautifully realized retelling of some of Ovid's classic myths.
A Facebook friend, whom I met on facebook through Donna Lynne Champlin, was featured in this production:  J. T. Arbogast.
We had agreed earlier to meet in the lobby following the performance and so we did.  What a charmer.  And we had more in common than just Donna Lynne!

My best friend Coni, whom I attended the show with is a playwright in her own right - I've done several of her plays  - and it would seem that J. T. did one of Coni's plays eight years ago!  Ironic since Coni whispered to me during the show that J. T. would be the one cast member she would like to meet, not realizing that he was my Facebook friend or that she had already met him several years ago.

Following the show, Coni, her husband and I went to The Spaghetti Warehouse for a marvelous dinner, where dirt was dished and marvelous dishes were consumed.  We had a very, very good server who was energetic and efficient, and good for a laugh or two.  When I ordered my "Turin Trio" (15 layer lasagna, fettucini al fredo and chicken parmesan) it only took a moment for her to realize what I meant when I said I was ordering "The Shroud."  (NO groaning on HHW).

On my way home, I stopped briefly to get some photos printed, they can be seen on the public Facebook photo link I posted above. . .

Virtually all the fires are in areas where Volunteer Fire Fighting is the norm (Country Fire Authority CFA).

I'm not sure that this is 100% accuate (since they are only supposed to be revealing this tonight). But here are the 13 contestants for this March's DANCING WITH THE STARS:

BELINDA CARLISLE - Belinda Carlisle is not only known as the lead singer of the Go-Go's, the most successful all-female band of all time, but also as one of the late 80's most glamorous adult pop soloists. The Go-Gos' 1981 multi-platinum hit debut, "Beauty and the Beat," spawned mega hits "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat" and made the Go-Go's the first all-female band (who wrote their own music and played their own instruments) to achieve a #1 album.  The following years saw continued success for the girls with hits "Vacation," "Head Over Heels," and "Turn To You."  Belinda led off her solo career with the gold debut "Belinda," and followed with huge mainstream hits "Mad About You," "Heaven Is A Place On Earth" and "I Get Weak," to name a few.  Since then, Belinda has released 5 more albums, including 2007's French pop collection, "Voila," and continues to tour internationally, both with her Go-Go's sisters and as a solo artist.

DAVID ALAN GRIER -- Grier is often recognized for his work in television and film - in TV he is known from roles in "In Living Color," "Life with Bonnie" with Bonnie Hunt, "DAG," and most recently, "Chocolate News" for Comedy Central. In the feature film world, Grier has played memorable characters in numerous feature film roles, including "Baadassss!", "The Woodsman" opposite Kevin Bacon and Mos Def, "15 Minutes," "Boomerang," "Bewitched," Jumanji," and Robert Altman's "Streamers."   A multi-talented and Yale School of Drama trained actor, Grier began his professional career on Broadway as Jackie Robinson in "The First," for which he earned a Tony nomination. He then joined the cast of "Dreamgirls," went on to star opposite Denzel Washington in "A Soldier's Play;" both actors continued their roles in the film version, "A Soldier's Story."

JEWEL -- She grew up on a remote ranch in Alaska where her family were original pioneers.   From poverty and teen homelessness, to the triumph of international stardom, the three-time Grammy nominee has enjoyed career longevity rare among her generation of artists and has sold twenty-seven million albums worldwide.  Her debut album Pieces of You, became one of the best selling debut albums of all time, going platinum twelve times.  Last year, singer/songwriter Jewel released her first country record Perfectly Clear which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart.  In May 2009, she will release an album of original and traditional lullabies.  Jewel lives on a working ranch in Stephenville, Texas with her husband, World Champion bull-riding superstar, Ty Murray.

SHAWN JOHNSON - The youngest ever competitor on "Dancing with the Stars," 17 year-old Olympian Shawn Johnson was the gold medalist in balance beam at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing where she also earned 3 silver medals in the team, floor exercise and individual all-around categories. The current two-time National Champion and high-school Junior Johnson appeared on a limited edition Cheerios box in early 2009, led the pledge of allegiance at last year's Democratic National Convention in Denver, was a headliner of last fall's Tour of Gymnastics Superstars and was named Choice Female Athlete at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards.  Her debut biography Shawn Johnson: Olympic Champion: Stories Behind the Smile was released in December.

LIL' KIM - Born Kimberly Denise Jones, Lil' Kim, is a Grammy Award winning multi-platinum rapper, singer, actress, and fashion icon.  She is one of three female rappers to have a #1 Billboard Hot 100 hit with 2001's Lady Marmalade, featuring Christina Aguilera, Pink, & M_a. As an actress, she appeared on television shows such as "Moesha" and "The Game," and on her own reality series "Countdown to Lockdown," which has the hightest-rated premiere in BET's history. On film, she has appeared in "Zoolander," "She's All That," "Juwanna Man," and "You Got Served." She is currently working on her 5th studio album is expected to be released in 2009.

GILLES MARINI -- Gilles Marini exploded onto the scene as Dante, the Casanova living in the beach house next door to Kim Cattrall's Samantha in the "Sex and the City" movie, a role which has earned him international recognition. Born and raised in France, Gilles joined the French army and was stationed in Paris, where he acted as a fireman for the famous Brigade des Sapeurs Pompiers de Paris. After fulfilling his military duties, Gilles decided to go to the United States to learn English while working as a model. Gilles, who has appeared in series such as "Ugly Betty," "Dirty Sexy Money," and "Criminal Minds," will next be seen as Vanessa Redgrave's husband on FX's "Nip/Tuck."  Gilles currently resides in California with his wife Carole, son Georges, and daughter Juliana.

TY MURRAY -- Ty Murray has been labeled the most accomplished rodeo athlete in the century-long history of the sport.  With a record-setting seven All-Around World Championship titles and two bull riding world titles under his belt, Murray has truly earned his nickname as "King of the Cowboys." Now retired from competition, Murray spends his time with his singer-songwriter wife, Jewel, on their 2,100-acre private ranch in Stephenville, Texas.   Murray may have retired in the arena but he hasn't slowed down as a cowboy.  In 2004, Murray helped shepherd National Day of the Horse unanimously through the U.S. Senate, encouraging Americans "to be mindful of the contribution of horses to economy, history and character of the United States." He runs his working cattle ranch and trains horses throughout the year. Additionally, he remains active with the Professional Bull Riders, Inc. (PBR), an organization he and 19 other elite bull riders founded in 1992. Murray serves as a board advisor, promotes a top level bull riding event in his hometown, and provides TV commentary for PBR events on NBC and VERSUS.

STEVE-O -- Determined to build a career in television and film, Steve-O, a.k.a. Stephen Glover, sent his self-produced videos to anyone he thought might watch them including Jeff Tremiane (MTV's "Jackass" creator/director/producer). Steve-O wrote himself a "mile of work" to do for Tremaine and "Jackass." When MTV rejected his more dangerous ideas, Steve-O produced his own "too hot for TV" video series and stage show with the "Don't Try This At Home Tour". Steve-O also starred in his own show for MTV - "Wildboyz."

NANCY O'DELL - The co-Anchor of Access Hollywood, O'Dell has contributed reports to NBC's Today Show and Dateline NBC.  Beyond covering events such as The Oscars, The Emmys, The Grammys and The Golden Globe Awards, O'Dell has been chosen by NBC for the last eight years to host two of their big annual network broadcasts, The Golden Globes Arrivals Special and The Tournament of Roses Parade.  Not only is O'Dell one of the country's most respected and leading entertainment journalists, she has also appeared in numerous films including: Thank You For Smoking, Scream 2, Scream 3, Martin Lawrence Live: Runteldat, and television series: 30 Rock, Project Runway, Charmed, Joey, Third Watch, Beverly Hills, 90210, Days of Our Lives, Melrose Place, General Hospital, Just Shoot Me and Ally McBeal among others. Although O'Dell maintains a busy work schedule, she regularly makes time for philanthropic endeavors. The Muscular Dystrophy Association, American Red Cross, the March of Dimes, Best Buddies, Best Buddies, and Childhelp USA have all benefited from her time and efforts. She resides in Los Angeles with her husband Keith, their daughter, Ashby, and two stepsons, Tyler and Carson.

DENISE RICHARDS -- Known for her roles in films such as "Wild Things" and "Starship Troopers," Denise Richards got her start as a fashion model before making her way into television and movies.  She was cast as Bond girl and geo-physicist "Christmas Jones" in the 1999 James Bond film The World Is Not Enough as well as appearing in films such as "Drop Dead Gorgeous," "Undercover Brother," and :Scary Movie 3."  In addition to her film work, Richards has made regular appearances in comedies Spin City, Two and a Half Men, Friends and Seinfeld.  She is currently working on her second season of her own reality television show, Denise Richards: It's Complicated airing on E! Entertainment Television.

LAWRENCE TAYLOR - Widely regarded as the greatest defensive player in the history of the National Football League, Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor rewrote the record book and built a legendary following during one of the most storied careers in the history of American sport. Taylor spent his entire career with the New York Giants, leading them to two Super Bowl titles. Taylor was the first player in the history to be selected to the Pro Bowl in ten consecutive seasons. He was also an unanimous selection to the NFL's 75th Anniversary team, which honored the top players in the history of the game, was the NFL's Rookie of the Year in 1981, Most Valuable Player in 1986 and was the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year. "LT" has written two best selling books ("Living on the Edge" and "Over The Edge"), has appeared in feature films (including "Any Given Sunday," "The Waterboy" and "Shaft") and is an avid golfer and philanthropist.

CHUCK WICKS - A gifted songwriter and vocalist, Chuck Wicks made a compelling impression with his Top 5 smash, "Stealing Cinderella," the fastest-rising single by a debut country act in 2007.   By the time his first album, Starting Now (RCA Nashville), was released in January 2008, he had begun a year-long 750,000 fan-packed tour opening for superstar Brad Paisley.  Chuck Wicks co-penned 10 of the 11 songs on his debut CD, including his 2nd hit, "All I Ever Wanted," and the new single, "Man of the House," a touching story-song about a boy taking on beyond-his-years responsibilities as his father is on military assignment. Also re: DWTS, here are two interesting points the article states:

1.In addition, couples will once again take part in a team dance, group dance and face off as well as perform the Argentine Tango and East Coast Swing; a first in the series.

2. And in an exciting new twist, the bottom two couples facing elimination will "Dance Off" to determine who is dismissed in the first weeks of competition.

I have had a very long day, good but long.  I started at Lowe's and bought almost all the supplies I will need to finish the trim, window framing, doors etc. Then I had to go to 3 more stores to find a curtain rod and rings that will work with the width of the window and the insulated curtains my mother gave me.   They aren't my favorite curtains, but they blend in ok and are insulated.  I can always get new curtains later, but in the meantime, these will really keep it warm when I want to be down there at night.

It took forever to get the curtains hung and man are they heavy to do alone.  But I did it. Whew!  I had to do the trim around the sliding glass door and the trim around the top of the room near the door before I could do the curtains.   I finally finished about 8:00.  Man, am I sore from working over my head!

Yes, it is quite lovely outside today. My walk up Riverside Drive was quite delightful and the view of the Hudson was clear and bright and beautiful. I walked up to 100th Street and down West End Avenue.

You walked right past my partner Peter's apartment!

Just checked. I leave SUX (Sioux City) at 1:06 PM and get to Minneapolis at 2:30 PM.  I think that will be fine.   I've been trying to reach my cat sitter to verify she'll be here tomorrow, and she hasn't called back.  That's unusual for her. Hopefully I'll hear from her tonight.  If not I'll be calling early in the morning!

"I just wanted to Thank You for being so supportive of us.  I don't sing, but you make me want to sing because I know you'll take care of me."

I was truly touched. :)

DR Jose, I think Bradley Cooper is dreamy, too. I thought so when he co-starred on ALIAS and was crushed when his Fox sitcom got canceled during its first season.
Yeah, well, bad writing will do that to a series.

Sometimes it will and sometimes it will get you a nine year run like ACCORDING TO JIM.

I watched another episode of THE STARTER WIFE. I'm assuming this was the season finale of the show. Joan eluded the police, Molly broke up with her boy friend. Rodney's action film star lover came out of the closet. All of these sound like end of season situations.

And then I came home to the best phone message and then phone call I could have asked for, from muse Margaret, who read the last pages and absolutely went bonkers for them.  I cannot tell you how happy that made me.  She was quoting line after line (which always amazes me) and she said the last sequence made her squirm (in a good way) - so happy right now.  She only had one tiny little thing for me to adjust and that was an article of clothing, which I've already done.  So, book will be Xeroxed in the morning and I'll start proofing.

Did you know that Johnny Mercer was originally supposed to write the lyric for the Johnny Mandel tune that, eventually, became "The Shadow of Your Smile"?

I think he was ill at the time, and the assignment went to Paul Francis Webster, who won the Oscar.

I just took a break from my Bollywood movie MISSION ISTANBUL (2008), an action flick about hunky guys fighting terrorists. They had me at "hunky."

For an action film likely aimed at men, there is certainly a  LOT of beefcake on display.

I'm home (and have been for about an hour.  Well, it turns out that it wasn't a play reading.  It was a meeting of the (very small) committee that reads plays for TAO (three people didn't show up and three did...like I said, very small) and the other two people discussed other plays that they'd read and liked and things like that.  They always do a Shakespeare or a classical piece and they always do something different, so I suggested "All the World's a Grave (http://www.amazon.com/All-Worlds-Grave-William-Shakespeare/dp/0452289866/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234162898&sr=8-1)," a New Play by William Shakespeare.  I got a copy from the library and Pug, the director of Nite of the Living Dead! The Musical! that I did last year read it and loved it.  I also suggested a couple other things, so we'll see how it all pans out. :)
