Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a trip, and now it is time for you to post until the trippy cows come tripping home.
-
And the word of the day is: LIMBATE!
-
Welcome five GUESTS. GUESTS are stuck in the years 2007 and 2006.
-
Laura DR - loved loved loved your art photos. Intentional and not. :)
-
Did DR Sandra delete a post? I'm confused... :-\
-
Well I'm up. I would rather be sleeping but I am up. I stayed awake all day yesterday I was really hoping I woud be able to sleep through the night, but noooooooooooooo,
I have to keep trying to choke myself to death.
-
Well at least I made Vixdad a nice suprise lunch for him to bring to work today. Whne my Mom took me to teh store I picked up all sorts of nice sandwich makings.
He now has a turkey & swiss with lettuce & tomato on whole wheat bread with a little mayo, some "light" Pringles potato chips and an apple waiting for him in the fridge.
I put the lettuce next to the bread and the mayo on the lettuce, and the tomato in the middle so the bread won't get soggy.
-
What an exciting post that was. Shall I next tell you how I stacked the cutting board and knives in the dishwasher?
-
Wow, DR vixmom - I'm sorry your sleeping cycle is so disruptive. :(
-
Maybe I can more myself to sleep with this drivel
-
Good morning DAW, you are up bright and early!
-
Time to take the dog for a walk. As DR SWW might say: Walkies! :)
-
I hope everything is going well for you. What ever happened with your wisdom tooth?
-
Have a good day, DR vixmom!
-
Oh - the tooth seems to have settled down - no further news, either way. Thanks for asking, though!
-
Have alovely walk, I hope it's not too cold out there!
-
BTW, I dont remember if I ever thanked you for the lovely cards you sent. When I am feeling low I sit here and read over all the cards I received, it is very comforting. Thank you!
-
Well since DAW went for a walk I shall catch up on yesterday
-
All caught up to yesterday. Let's see what I remember
-
Laura, I loved the pictures! Thank you ! I too am confused, I see DR's thanking Sandra for her explanations but saw no posts from Sandra!
-
Jose if you do go to Pal Joey look for the Vixter and her drama class! They'll be impressed if a real Broadway musician comes by to say hello to her!
-
Just don't call her Vixter in front of the class!
-
Congratulations to BK on a successful meeting

Good Morning Deb.
The bowl is washed and I'm almost ready to head out. I have a meeting this morning at 9:30. Certain people feel this meeting (with some outside people) is very, very, very important so I must be prepared.
-
~~~VIBES TO BEN FOR A SUCCESSFUL MEETING~~~
-
Well the Vixter will be getting up in 10 minutes to get ready for school - guess I'll go get some breakfast stuff ready for her.
-
Have a lovely day, everyone!
-
Good morning, all! Another bad night of sleep but I'm up early to be on the bus by 8:15 for my barber appointment. After that, I'm beack here fro a bit before having coffee with one of my favorite musical directors David Chase. Then it's back to more edits.
My, everyone sure rushed to the defense of INTO THE WOODS last night! I think in the Sondheim canon it's neither a good show nor one of his best scores. With the Sondheim cult elevating his used tollet tissue to the status of valuable musical manuscript I know that what I write is sacrilegious but INTO THE WOODS has a wonderfully funny first act that falls apart in Act Two. The logic and dramaturgy of Act Two is poor and the theme of getting what you wish for and finding maybe it ain't what you wanted is better and more simply told in THE FANTASTICKS. I think there's about half of a good score in the show, but no more than that.
Don't even get me started on PASSION!
-
ASK BK
What is your favorite musical, play, film, that got trashed by the critics and bombed at the box office and add tv show to the list
-
I'm awake - and I'm thinking that a whole lot of coffee will be in order today.
-
I'm awake - and I'm thinking that a whole lot of coffee will be in order today.
Have a great day, DR Matthew! You're up awfully early.
-
We are having a "light breakfast" i.e. coffee, muffins, fresh fruit and juice before our big meeting
-
The Old Maid and the Thief and La Vie Parisienne are on CD
Never mind Elmore, it would be a boring old world if we all liked the same stuff. I never saw Passions so I cannot offer an opinion on that one way or the other
Enjoy your haircutting experience and your coffee meeting!
thank you dear DAW!
-
I am going to try and geta can in - see you all later!
-
I believe Sandra was being thanked for her video explanation of "to and fro, hither, thither and yon," which DR Laura had posted (temporarily?).
-
I came to discover just last week that THE YELLOW ROLLES ROYCE and THE SOLID GOLD CADILLAC are two different movies.
-
I liked the "art" pictures of the row of THINKERS and the the group dressed in cowboy shirts.
-
I once heard Stephen Hawking give an explanation of to, fro, hither and yon and I had no idea what the hell he was talking about. Now thanks to DR Sandra, I understand the concept.
-
It is raining and raining here.
-
I am waiting for DR JOSE to tell us what Grecian Dance Underwear could possibly be - even if it turned out to be boxer briefs.
-
I am waiting for DR JOSE to tell us what Grecian Dance Underwear could possibly be - even if it turned out to be boxer briefs.
Yes, I've been intrigued about that, too. I hope the explanation won't be disappointing like when I found out what Grecian Formula actually was.
TODAY IN THEATRE HISTORY...
Another 50th anniversary: Lorraine Hansberry's A RAISIN IN THE SUN opened tonight in 1959 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
It did not star Ethel Barrymore, however.
-
Nor were raisins served at intermission.
-
Page Two Joan Collins swinging dance.
She is going to be at the Hollywood Collector's Show along with DR DRUXY, John Saxon, Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher, Erik Estrada, and many many more!
-
Now thanks to DR Sandra, I understand the concept.
Where is this infamous video to be found, praytell?
And the word of the day is: LIMBATE!
And The Song Of The Day Is: HURRY! IT'S LOVELY UP HERE
-
Back from the barber and I'm bummed to learn from TIMEOUT that CORNBURY, one of my favorite comedies, just closed at the hudson Guild Theatre and i didn't know there was a production going on! Rats.
Oh, I see Ron Raines is on GUIDING LIGHT this morning. My upstairs neighbor, who's now a director for ALL MY CHILDREn, worked for a while with THE GUIDING LIGHT.
-
Wednesday morning greetings! We must have some weather moving in, because my sinuses are killing me.
This afternoon I'm going to sort & price books again and give one of my friends a check for her 2 tickets for the touring production of Frost/Nixon. We'll see it Feb. 28 at the Aronoff in Cincinnati.
-
What an exciting post that was. Shall I next tell you how I stacked the cutting board and knives in the dishwasher?
LOL! Sounds kind of like retirement...
Perhaps DR LAURA will post the link again.
-
I love INTO THE WOODS!
-
There is a lot on tv tonight:
8pm: Lost pop-up show, American Idol (2 hours)
9pm: Lost, Life
10pm: Top Chef NYC!
-
DRs JRand and Dan (The Man) et al - "Grecian Underwear" - at least according to my high school English/Drama teacher - are tights that have had their legs "trimmed" - cut off at the top of the thigh. I don't believe the "classic" Greeks ever wore them, however, when wearing a toga on stage in a classic Greek drama, they are an appropriate and ideal(?) undergarment. Nowadays, with things like square-cut briefs and sports briefs, there's probably no more need to cut up a pair of fraying tights.
RE: last night's AMERICAN IDOL.
I just wanna say how frustrated i was.
They spent so much time showing the judges shuffling their papers trying to decide who to pick. I"m sorry but that is just wasting time to me. If they want to show that they then should tell us what they are talking about.
There are SO MANY contestants who've made the top 50 who we've never even seen. And if i have to see that whiny tatiana again i will scream. How did she make it to top 50????
It's just crazy. There are certain people (who granted are very good) like the guy who lost his wife. They have shown him a ridiculous amount of times. And then there are people like jen (from the hi-5 group) who they have never shown one second of (well they showed her face a lot last night since she was in the front row of room 4).
I'm sure there are many more people in top 50 we have never seen. Why can't they just show
us all the contestants instead of showing the shuffling of papers!
-
DR Jane i hope Craig feels better. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
Good morning!
It was overcast when I got up, but the sun is peeking through now and there are glimmers of blue sky and the promise of a warm day ahead (71 for a high). This is February?
-
I'm not even going to watch AMERICAN IDOL tonight. I don't need to see two hours of people walking that long walk to the chair in front of the judges, having the judges plays with the person's brain, and then get the news of yes or no.
I'll see the 36 they pick when the semifinals start next week.
-
BK, Wish I could be with you at the Hollywood Collectors Show. Loos like an interesting and different round-up this time. I see Mr. Kevin Sorbo is there. This does not surprise me as I saw him in a bad spoof of 300, MEET THE SPARTANS, on HBO the other day. I think he was third-billed after Carmen Electra. Perhaps, if he had done KULL the way I had written it, instead of insisting it be dumbed down for his 12-year old HERCULES fans, his career might have a little more punch.
-
On TV Tonight!™
ABC - LOST, LIFE ON MARS
CBS - comedies, CRIMINAL MINDS, CSI: NY
NBC - KNIGHT RIDER, LIFE, LAW & ORDER
FOX - AMERICAN IDOL (two hours)
FX - DAMAGES
-
DR Jennifer - As for "American Idol"... I suggest that you stop watching the prelims and just start watching once the actual "live" competition starts.
As for Tatiana and some of the others, you know why they're there: Manufactured Drama. That's part of the program - always has been, always will be. There's no need to get "frustrated" about all the "paper shuffling".
-
DR vixmom - I do have to be in midtown this afternoon, and, if it turns out that I can get over to Studio 54 before or after the matinee, I shall try my best to look for
the vixter your daughter. ;)
-
I'm very enthusiastic (finally) about a TV box set I'm going to review: MURDER SHE WROTE - Season 9. There may even be some episodes I didn't get a chance to see in this season. By the ninth season, my partner had left me, and I had gotten back heavily into doing theater, so I missed some Sunday nights due to rehearsals and (occasionally) shows.
Anyway, I start on the box set this afternoon. Of course, I'll watch last night's LEVERAGE while I eat lunch.
-
My upstairs neighbor, who's now a director for ALL MY CHILDREN
So that was storyline research they were doing the other night, that kept you awake at 1:00 AM?? ;)
-
Or you can just read the list (it's already been released). But i glanced at it without pictures a while back. And 99% of the names at the time meant nothing.
Actually i am looking forward to tonight's show. The reason being that because it is 2 hours i am pretty sure that they will go back and show us a lot of their auditions (the people we have not seen).
I remember they did this in the past. So i'm hoping to see some of the people i have not seen before.
-
I can answer DR Michael Shayne's BK question from page 1.
Play that got bad reviews that I loved: the 1974 revival of THE WOMEN.
TV show that got bad reviews that I loved: JOURNEYMAN
Musical that got bad reviews that I loved: THE RINK
Movie that got bad reviews that I loved: MAKING LOVE
Actually hollywood is my favorite round. So i would not miss it. I really like seeing how people progress and then who makes it.
It's just frustrating that they are focusing so much on the drama.
And no i don't get it (i'm serious). I get why they focus on the drama up until they get to top 50. But i cannot understand why they would keep someone like tatiana (who is obnoxious and comes across extremely poorly in her attitude and singing). They just want to give her a nervous breakdown when she doesn't make it on the show (i'm assuming/hoping).
As I said, I'll see them when they perform an entire song with the band during the semifinals. The names mean absolutely nothing to me anyway. I'll learn their names when they make an impression on me (good or bad) during the semifinal round.
And I have to say that the judges have been impressed with some people I thought were mediocre or worse, so I'm decidedly unenthusiastic that THEY get to have wild card choices again this season.
DR MattH - If you don't watch tonight's episode, you won't get to see the new "Judge's Mansion"!!! -I guess they're not using the old Pasadena Town Hall this year.
But, more importantly, you won't get to see the other new "twist" this year: people "Singing For Their Life" - or whatever they're calling it - if they are given a "No" by the judges.
;D
*Like any last minute singing-plea is truly going to change the mind of the judges and producers. ::)
So that was storyline research they were doing the other night, that kept you awake at 1:00 AM?? ;)
No, the upstairs neighbor who works for ALL MY CHILDREN is not the neighbor directly above me in 4C. That's the real estate student with the barking dog and the squeaky bed.
The ex-boyfriend of the soap director on the fourth floor was a dresser on THE SOPRANOS.
Off to meet David Chase.
Thanks for the alert! Now I KNOW I won't be watching!
I like THE YELLOW ROLLS-ROYCE more than bk. No, it's pretty sudsy especially that first section. But I love the stars, and I got interested in all three stories.
It also helps that my first experience with the movie was at Radio City Music Hall, so the presentation was first class. Big stars, mammoth theater, showy MGM production. Sheer heaven!
-
I'm heading down now to check the mail, straighten up a few things, and then start on preparing some lunch.
WBBL.
-
DR vixmom - I do have to be in midtown this afternoon, and, if it turns out that I can get over to Studio 54 before or after the matinee, I shall try my best to look for the vixter your daughter. ;)
I told her there was a "slight possibility" of you being there. She was very excited to hear that. Since this is an advanced class for college credits it seems most of the students are upperclassmen and she is one of the few (or possibly only) 10th grader.
She thought it would be "fun" to casually introduce to her classmates her friend the Broadway musician
-
So I did get a can in and managed to get a little nap in as well, about 2 hours. So that was something!
-
Ask BK:
Have you looked into the possibility of releasing CDs of music from poverty row films of the 40s? Since most, if not all are now in public domain you might not have any trouble with rights, perhaps.
-
Ooo, I hope we get a picture!
-
RATS! I was just going to make Vixdad a Valentine's Card and I discovered the printer is out of ink.
-
Hi Ginny - I meant to tell you Vixter had a wonderful time on Saturday picking and downlaoding songs for her IPOD. She was excited to see that the charge was 99 cents and there was no tax, she had expected to pay tax so she only picked about 10 songs.
So now she still has some money left to buy more at a later date.
Thank you again for your generosity.
Oy--I've had a mad burst of activity this morning. My office was once again awash in umpteen piles of paper, so I have plowed through all of those, gotten my business expenses logged in my handy-dandy Excel spreadsheet, taken out the garbage and recycling, and, most importantly, finally listened to Laurette/Prince Jack. ;)
-
It looks like a beautifil sunny day outside and I beleive the temperature is due to be in the 50's. Nice day for a field trip!
-
DR Vixmom - you're welcome - she's such a special girl, I thought she deserved a treat!
-
DS Betsy thought that Laurette was unreleased music from To Kill a Mockingbird, which indeed it could have been.
Vixdad was most suprised when he came back from dropping the Vixter off for school to find his lunch all packed and ready for him.
There is so little I can do around here. Because of the stomach tube I have been forbidden to lift things over 10 lbs, vaccuum etc, anything that might strain the stomach muscles.
Hmmm... The folks over at Acqua Panna and San Pellegrino want to feature some of my food photos on their websites. Hmmm.... No money involved, but a nice acknowledgment. Hmmm...
:)
Good Afternoon!
And I need to get ready to head out for the afternoon.
Did DR Sandra delete a post? I'm confused... :-\
Well, it's not like it's the first time....and it certainly won't be the last! :-* ;D
I heard that! >:(
Gadzooks, Jennifer. I find it hard enough reconciling that this show is STILL on the air and you're wanting more of what had to be horrible auditons?
Life IS way too short...trust me.
-
Re: All the "Into the Woods" hoo-haw.
I find the score flat-out brilliant and engaging. I feel the same way about "A Little Night Music" and "Follies" and, more than any of them, "Sweeney Todd." They are among a precious few scores I can listen to over and over, straight through and with many repeats! :)
The Sondheim score I struggle the most with is "Sunday in the Park With George". Some of it is wonderful and some is downright disengaging. I'm not particularly fond of "Pacific Overtures", either. Perhaps, in both cases, it would help to see the shows.
I've not investigated "Passion" or "Bounce."
Hello, everyone.
It's a lovely day here in the hinterlands.
Does DR Jose have another career in the bud?? I can't imagine anyone better qualified to photograph food. And then there's the Monkey at MOMA (and elsewhere).
"The Yellow Rolls-Royce" has been a guilty pleasure of mine for 40-plus years. The score by Ortolani is a treasure. I think BK said it was "syrupy", but I likes me my syrup on occasion.
Hello, everyone.
It's a lovely day here in the hinterlands.
I'm never entirely sure where you are at any given moment, DR Jeanne, so please forgive me when I ask if by hinterlands you are referencing someplace in Southern California.
-
I, too, enjoyed DR Laura's photos. I'm quite fond of public art.
No, Ron, I am currently in the hinterlands of northern Florida. I am having some medical treatments done here, then will mosey out west to SoCal.
-
I haven't been entirely sure where I am lately, either, so Ron's confusion is quite understandable.
Ron's confusion is quite understandable.
For more reasons than one might initially suspect.
-
After having watched previous seasons of "American Idol", I have given it up completely.
It was never great in the first season (and Kelly Clarkson does not register with me as a singing talent I care to indulge in).
I'll never believe that Clay Aiken received fewer votes than Ruben Studdard (Ruben "who?" you may well be asking) in Season 2.
And when the two best, and truly gifted, singers EVER to appear on "American Idol" -- Eliot Yamin and Melinda Doolittle -- could finish only as high as 3rd place to the likes of Taylor "Goober Hicks", Katherine "McPitchy" McPhee, Jordin "Where is she now?" Sparks and that beat boxer whose name I have mercifully forgotten...well.....it's time to smell the coffee for me.
It's been fun picking on Paula and poo-poohing Simon for being a British a**hole, but I'll say again: LIFE IS TOO SHORT!
-
Ron's confusion is quite understandable.
Well look at what I have to contend with! :D
Time to scoot. TTFN.
Hmmm... The folks over at Acqua Panna and San Pellegrino want to feature some of my food photos on their websites. Hmmm.... No money involved, but a nice acknowledgment. Hmmm...
:)
That['s our Jose!! Soon you willbe the most known man in NYC in every field!!
I bet you could easily sell a book of your eating and walking tours of New York complete with Monkey pictures! In fact in could be a whole series for different types of food or different parts of the city
Tour the Theatre District with Jose and Monkey, SoHO, Harlem, etc
Vixdad was most suprised when he came back from dropping the Vixter off for school to find his lunch all packed and ready for him.
There is so little I can do around here. Because of the stomach tube I have been forbidden to lift things over 10 lbs, vaccuum etc, anything that might strain the stomach muscles.
What happens when you sneeze?
Unfortunately it often starts a vomiting attack - even blowing my nose can do that
One of the reasons I have been so careful to stay away from people. Yesterday when my Mom brought me to the store I wore my gloves the whole time to try and prevent picking up any germs from the shopping cart etc.
Re: All the "Into the Woods" hoo-haw.
I find the score flat-out brilliant and engaging. I feel the same way about "A Little Night Music" and "Follies" and, more than any of them, "Sweeney Todd." They are among a precious few scores I can listen to over and over, straight through and with many repeats! :)
The Sondheim score I struggle the most with is "Sunday in the Park With George". Some of it is wonderful and some is downright disengaging. I'm not particularly fond of "Pacific Overtures", either. Perhaps, in both cases, it would help to see the shows.
I've not investigated "Passion" or "Bounce."
DR Ron, I felt the same way about Pacific Overtures until Theaterworks in Palo Alto mounted the show in 2001. It was of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. It's one of those shows that sometimes the CD just isn't enough to grab your interest in the material. Kinda the same with Sunday......although when I finally saw it, I slept through part of it. It's on my list of shows I'd like to delve into one day, because there are some great moments.
Jordin "Where is she now?" Sparks
She is home in the Phoenix area. She sang at the opening of the Cardinals home play-off game vs. the Eagles. I think she is also going to sing at the NBA All-Star game (but I'm not positive on that one).
It looks like a beautifil sunny day outside and I beleive the temperature is due to be in the 50's. Nice day for a field trip!
According to New York One it's 64 degrees. Too warm for the light leather jacket I wore when I left the house at 6am.
My meeting is over and it went very well. The Ford Foundation people were impressed.
I left and went to the Greenmarket where I purchased some apples and pears, some juice from
Red Jacket Orchards (http://www.redjacketorchards.com/)
some baked goods (a spinach quiche, a stromboli, some rugelach, and a Valentine's Day chocolate heart) from
Baker's Bounty (http://www.bakersbounty.net/)
and a bunch of tulips from my flower man. My scone person was not there today so I don't have a scone for Sunday breakfast but Anthony isn't here to enjoy it with me anyway so all the better I skip the scone.
I came home, put away my goods and had a salad for lunch and I just finished a banana.
I will be seeing Miss Jane Fonda in
33 Variations
this evening.
That's it from Chelsea.
Yes, I did delete the link, as I said I was going to. I don't want anyone but HHW folks viewing my kid being silly. I'll delete it a bit later.
I'm still after her to get those dollar bills with witty sayings in the mail to you. She is a procrastinator!
I'm not even going to watch AMERICAN IDOL tonight. I don't need to see two hours of people walking that long walk to the chair in front of the judges, having the judges plays with the person's brain, and then get the news of yes or no.
I'll see the 36 they pick when the semifinals start next week.
Or you can just read the list (it's already been released). But i glanced at it without pictures a while back. And 99% of the names at the time meant nothing.
Actually i am looking forward to tonight's show. The reason being that because it is 2 hours i am pretty sure that they will go back and show us a lot of their auditions (the people we have not seen).
I remember they did this in the past. So i'm hoping to see some of the people i have not seen before.
As I said, I'll see them when they perform an entire song with the band during the semifinals. The names mean absolutely nothing to me anyway. I'll learn their names when they make an impression on me (good or bad) during the semifinal round.
And I have to say that the judges have been impressed with some people I thought were mediocre or worse, so I'm decidedly unenthusiastic that THEY get to have wild card choices again this season.
DR MattH - If you don't watch tonight's episode, you won't get to see the new "Judge's Mansion"!!! -I guess they're not using the old Pasadena Town Hall this year.
But, more importantly, you won't get to see the other new "twist" this year: people "Singing For Their Life" - or whatever they're calling it - if they are given a "No" by the judges.
;D
*Like any last minute singing-plea is truly going to change the mind of the judges and producers. ::)
I saw on the preview that they showed the "singing for your life" concept. Is that only this round?
I think that there are some contestants that certain judges my not like (but the others may like them). So all you have to do is do great at your sing-off and hope that the judge who disliked you changes their mind.
Really though since the top 36 have already been announced it won't really be that riveting. Although like i said i decided not to really study the list. So there is only one person i know who is in for sure. although there are a few i would be stunned if they didn't get in.
One person i was surprised that we did not get to see at all was jason castro's brother. They made such a big deal about him in the auditions. And he obviously made it to top 70. But i don't recall seeing him at all during hollywood week.
And what ever happened to that girl they showed on The View. She was a blonde jazz singer. They loved her during auditions. But i don't recall seeing her these past 2 weeks. I don't even know if she is still around.
I have never heard of 33 Variations, I look forward to hearing DR Ben's theatre report tomorrow!!
It's a new play by Moises Kaufmann, the man who wrote The Laramie Project and Gross Indecencies (the play about the trial of Oscar Wilde). It's about a musicologist (played by Jane Fonda) who is researching Beethoven.
ASK BK
What is your favorite musical, play, film, that got trashed by the critics and bombed at the box office and add tv show to the list
That's a hard one - Seconds pretty much got trashed by the critics (who now proclaim it a masterpiece - they forget so quickly) and the same with The Swimmer and Marnie - all three of which I love. Play-wise is more difficult as most plays I've seen were hits or not trashed by the critics. Have to think on that one. Musical - Not sure if it was trashed, but it did bomb at the box-office - The Happy Time, which, for whatever reasons, I really enjoyed. There are a lot of musicals that were flops and trashed whose scores I love, but I didn't see the shows themselves so shouldn't list them. TV - don't care for TV - but I liked Roald Dahl's Way Out and another show called Panic, both of which were one or two season wonders that no one cared about.
-
Ask BK:
Have you looked into the possibility of releasing CDs of music from poverty row films of the 40s? Since most, if not all are now in public domain you might not have any trouble with rights, perhaps.
a) it would have to be a composer that sells
and, more importantly b) there would have to be tapes or acetates available and there usually aren't.
-
I slept till nine-thirty and have been catching up and must do the long jog in about thirty minutes. Just got the new CD booklet to proof and will be doing that today. Plus I'm told the half of the CD that I haven't heard will be available today so I'll be listening to that online.
I was having such a good time visiting and catching up with David Chase that I forgot I need to go to the bank! Lunch was great; David had eggs and I had a BLT and a loverly salad. I got lots of gossip on BILLY ELLIOT, which he's conducting, and I have to pick a date and get his house seats.
So . . . I guess I'm off to the bank.
I am glad you had a nice lunch. Let me know what you think of Billy Elliot when you get to see it. I am hoping to take the Vixter to see it once I recover.
I didn't know that you knew the conductor - very cool!
-
I am actually feeling a little dozy so I am going to see if I can catch a nap
-
DRs JRand and Dan (The Man) et al - "Grecian Underwear" - at least according to my high school English/Drama teacher - are tights that have had their legs "trimmed" - cut off at the top of the thigh. I don't believe the "classic" Greeks ever wore them, however, when wearing a toga on stage in a classic Greek drama, they are an appropriate and ideal(?) undergarment. Nowadays, with things like square-cut briefs and sports briefs, there's probably no more need to cut up a pair of fraying tights.
I'll have to look for these in the next International Male catalog...
And were they appropriately in awe of an actual working Broadway musician?? :)
DR vixmom - Your daughter says, "Hi!"
OH cool! Thank you! Were her classmates suitably impressed?
Guess I will have to wait for the Vixter to come home to find out!
-
No one was impressed. Except for me.
From what I could tell, it looks like DR the vixter has some good friends and good teachers who are not only her friends and teachers, but also part of her "support group". :)
Jose - what does "auditing" a show mean?
-
BBC America picked up a new musical theater reality series featuring the
actor John Barrowman who plays Captain Jack in the series Torchwood. Any
Dream Will Do, with eleven 90 minute episodes, searches for a new male talent
to play Joseph in the West End revival of Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat. Graham Norton hosts the series which also
showcases Andrew Lloyd Webber. Any Dream Will Do makes its U.S. premiere
on March 29 at 8p and is followed by a one-hour special The Making of
Me: John Barrowman. The series is produced by a Really Useful Group and
BBC and distributed by BBC Worldwide; the special is an Impossible
Pictures production for ITV and is distributed by BBC Worldwide
Jose - what does "auditing" a show mean?
Auditing means sitting in the pit of a show during a show. It's a good time to gossip, compare iPhone apps, read magazines, try to make the other musicians laugh, eat cookies and other sweets, etc. Oh, and it's also a good time to observe the keyboards and start learning the book/keyboard part. ;)
-
OK - Time to turn off the iPhone for a bit. I have some walking and exploring to do.
Laters...
According to UPS the package I mailed on Monday is now in Wisconsin on schedule for delivery tomorrow. Shhh, don't tell Anthony.
Back from the long jog, during which I finally and I mean FINALLY fixed a lyric in a Nudie song that's been bothering me since I wrote it - it's the Eunice song, the song that has gone through many versions - I really like it now, but it seemed to me that one of the laugh lines came way too late AND it was worded awkwardly and never got the point across - I finally figured out how to make it the fourth line of the song and I figured out the perfect wording to sock the laugh home - happy!
-
bk, how did you ever write books and songs before you started jogging and showering?
-
Exactly!
-
BK's post reminded me that I also loved THE HAPPY TIME (really loved it!) and my Hitchcock of choice which got trashed was TORN CURTAIN.
-
DR MattH, the boys are on today! I think there will be a lot of them, Casey, Allison, and Matt(???) the cellmate.
Thanks for the notice, DR Elmore. I'll skim through it later this evening. I got so involved with the adventures of Jessica Fletcher that I didn't stop to watch it before I came upstairs.
~~~Alligator hide Vibes for DR MBarnum~~~
-
I thoroughly enjoyed last night's LEVERAGE except, of course, it featured one of my genuinely most despised actresses currently working: Lauren Holly. And she was just as stilted and robotic last night in her line deliveries as she almost always is. One of my happiest moments was the murder of her character on NCIS last season.
(To be fair, she played the shrewish wife Dennis Quaid in ANY GIVEN SUNDAY that I reviewed a week or two ago, and she was actually good. I was quite surprised she had that kind of performance in her.)
-
~~~Alligator hide Vibes for DR MBarnum~~~
LOL! Gave me my biggest laugh of the day thus far. Thanks, DR Ron.
~~~'Paddy-Paws, Paddy-Paws! Claws in!' Vibes for DR Elmore3003!~~~

I had time to watch the first four episodes in the MURDER SHE WROTE box set. So far, Jessica has been in Milan, Cabot Cove, New York, and Ireland.
-
Among the guest stars I've seen thus far: Cesar Romero, Herb Edelman, Joseph Bologna, Susan Blakeley, George Hearn, Ken Howard, and, of course, Ron Masak and William Windom in the Cabot Cove-set mystery.
-
We watched "The Yellow Rolls Royce" last night.
It was "Fluff" in 1964 and it certainly still is. But it is an enjoyable piece of fluff.
-
Smoke is in the air. The wind has been from the East. At this stage of the morning no town is under threat but the fires are far from "controlled".
-
I listened to THE GLORIOUS ONES for the first time yesterday.
What a lovey score.
It has been a long long time since a first hearing of a musical impressed so much.

The Sondheim score I struggle the most with is "Sunday in the Park With George". Some of it is wonderful and some is downright disengaging. I'm not particularly fond of "Pacific Overtures", either. Perhaps, in both cases, it would help to see the shows.
I enjoyed Sunday without seeing it, but enjoy it much more having seen productions.
I didn't like Pacific Overtures at all until Woody dragged me kicking and screaming to see the English National Opera production in London - and I've loved the score ever since.
For Follies, I enjoy listening to the score more than watching a production.

Great photos, derBrucer. If only I had my camera with me this afternoon when I stood up from weeding and a lesser goldfinch chirped at me from a nearby tree with a perfect blue sky background.

I am about to be buried with an onslaught of review discs, some of which I've been waiting for for weeks (Goodbye, Mr. Chips, for example). But that means I have to get the SIDEWAYS BD written up by tomorrow, and I must say I am finding it hard to write about. I think it was one of those films I just didn't "get." Betsy had seen it previously, and actually liked it better this time 'round, so maybe I need to go watch it again. The horror.
-
No one was impressed. Except for me.
From what I could tell, it looks like DR the vixter has some good friends and good teachers who are not only her friends and teachers, but also part of her "support group". :)
That is heartwarming to read. I'm so happy you were able to stop and see her.
-
I must say I am continually encouraged by the kindnesses HHW-ers show each other.
Yes, when I think about some of the things DR elmore3003 has posted about DR MBarnum, it brings tears to my eyes! ;)

Thanks for the notice, DR Elmore. I'll skim through it later this evening. I got so involved with the adventures of Jessica Fletcher that I didn't stop to watch it before I came upstairs.
The murder mystery has begun!
I bet Jessie Brewer will be accused and tried.

Well I have WORN grecian underwear, I just didn't know what they were!
MR BK - where did you find the Superman Television acetates or tape masters for the CD that was released some years ago?

Or is that answered in the liner notes? I haven't read them since I played the CD for the first time.

I listened to THE GLORIOUS ONES for the first time yesterday.
What a lovey score.
It has been a long long time since a first hearing of a musical impressed so much.
I love this recording, also! I first heard the song, "I Was Here" about two years ago on a YouTube clip sung by Patti LuPone (she's your favorite, right?? ;)) and instantly fell in love with it. It wasn't until later that I found out that it was from a show and a show written by Ahrens and Flaherty...AND I'd had the song in their songbook for several years! ;D

Maybe you need to be thick skinned to cope with the warmth and caring nature of DR Elmore.
AH!!! I was thinking of a "Hidden alligator" !!
As Tomovoz correctly sussed out, it was meant to wish MBarnum a "thick skin" to avert the slings and arrows flung his way by a certain resident grumpus.

Thank you ! I had several cat naps during the day and I am feeling quite strong and cheerful - of course this probably means another sleepless night. I should get Stve to get me a pair of headphones I can connect to the TV. Since I have also lost some of my hearing due to the selling in my ears from the radiation I need to keep the TV tooloud for the rest of the house to sleep while I am watching it
I suppose I could mute it and read the captions..... duh

Back from the Studio Cafe - had ham and eggs and a little side salad. Moving the lyric up in the song means I have to come up with two new lines for the other place. I also decided that Rosie's first song was/is missing a verse and I'm struggling with that now - almost have it but am still missing about six lines. Hopefully, they'll come soon, or when I shower, or when I jog.

We have two roofers coming over to give estimates tomorrow, so time will tell. The "good news" in all of this (if there is any) is that Betsy has been hot to trot to do a solar installation here--our site is perfect for it. But you need to have a new roof before they'll put on solar panels, so we may be paving the way for some green energy around here.

Since the Vixter is known to be a "hugger" she did say her drama teacher was a bit startled at first to see her hugging "some stranger on the street" but she had previously mentioned to her chorus teacher (who was the other chaperone) that she might possibly run into you there so that teacher managed to calm the drama teacher before she could step in and "save" the Vixter.
A couple of the other students thought she was being abducted!
About a month ago (last semester) when she was in the "intro to drama" class (which had a lot of the same kids in it) Vixter did a monologue about nearly being abducted in Radio City Music Hall when she was a little girl
(I hasten to add this was a monlogue from a book, not a true story)
Apparently she did a really good job with it, getting very teary and emotional and some of the kids thought it was true. They had passed Radio City Music Hall on their way to Studio 54 today and some of the kids pointed out the place where "Vixter was nearly kidnapped" So the thought was fresh in their minds when they saw her hugging Jose!!
:D

Speaking of roofs...I came across this article on Comcast.net:
Clever dog uses snow bank to climb up on roof (http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-odd/20090211/ODD.Roof.Dog/).
There's even a picture:

This is pretty darn cute too :) Keith also enjoyed the photo & story.
But how did he get down? That's what I want to know

BK, Wish I could be with you at the Hollywood Collectors Show. Loos like an interesting and different round-up this time. I see Mr. Kevin Sorbo is there. This does not surprise me as I saw him in a bad spoof of 300, MEET THE SPARTANS, on HBO the other day. I think he was third-billed after Carmen Electra. Perhaps, if he had done KULL the way I had written it, instead of insisting it be dumbed down for his 12-year old HERCULES fans, his career might have a little more punch.
Kevin Sorbo is going to be at the Collectors Show in Hollywood; and I have to do some dumb play in Tacoma!!!

Two hungry children were knocking at my door this evening.
Well I certainly hope that you fed them some pancakes.

Well I think I am going to toddle off, my cough is starting to bother me! Good night all!!

He is distantly related to my DH; shall I arrange to get you his phone number?

May you have a better night, DR vixmom!!!!!

It didn't specifically say how, but it did say this:
[Animal control officer Dick] Schnell tossed some treats and tempted the dog to the roof's lower level, but the dog would not come down until the owners got home.
Schnell said they were "very cooperative, very nice people," who were "very surprised" their dog was on the roof.
So there was a happy ending.
-
Who's watching LIFE tonight? It's really a hoot, so far.
-
I think it was nice people watched out for him until the owners arrived home.

Back from the barber and I'm bummed to learn from TIMEOUT that CORNBURY, one of my favorite comedies, just closed at the hudson Guild Theatre and i didn't know there was a production going on! Rats.
Oh, I see Ron Raines is on GUIDING LIGHT this morning. My upstairs neighbor, who's now a director for ALL MY CHILDREn, worked for a while with THE GUIDING LIGHT.
I have been enjoying Ron Raines on GL.. I see Grant Aleksandr is back. His character is one of my favorite sidewinders... and I am being nice... More than once I wanted to throttle Grant's character.
It will be intersting to how your neighbor does on AMC.
and per your earlier comment... Some of hte actors from Passions are now on Days including the directing staff. I think I will stick with my tapes from when DOOL was well written. I have watched OLTL from time to time. Phil Carey is a true loss, he was a fine actor.

A couple of weeks ago Mr. Rothman wrote me, telling me about his "blog" and asking if I'd post about it here. He then proceeded to let me know that he'd dissed me pretty badly in one of the early entries - not by name - and he didn't want me to hear about it from anyone else first. I looked at what he'd written - some twaddle about how he would never have the ego to write books about himself (yeah, right, that's why he's BLOGGING), or talk about what he ate for lunch or dinner, you know, a little slam against what I do here. His contention was that he used to love reading the notes because it was all about musical theater. I told him that this here site has been amazingly consistent in the writing and it was never specifically about anything other than what I felt like writing about. He thinks I have unbridled ego (I had to point out to him that I wrote three books about my childhood and that they are pretty loved by those who've read them - but one chooses to write about what one chooses to write about - he thought THAT response was filled with unbridled ego), but I have to say that my unbridled ego is not a patch on the butt cheeks of his, but I don't really care about any of that - I have as much ego as anyone, but I do keep it in check and never flaunt it EVER.
In any case, I like Mark, but I thought what he wrote was just foolish and therefore I saw no reason to post a URL here, as I tend not to want to promote those who feel the need to dis me, and why would I? Tonight, Druxy told me he'd gotten the e-mail and my only question is how did he harvest these e-mails? I suppose he searched them here (how else would he get them, unless I'm missing something somewhere or unless they were PMs here) - I'm not thrilled that he did it, frankly. And that's the story.
-
vixmom - not sure when this one will be out, although I'm thinking sooner than later, maybe June or July.

One more....I love that Stump came out of retirement a week before and went on to win. You go boy!

Welcome seven GUESTS, one of whom I presume is Mr. Rothman, seeing if people are talking about his blog - unbridled ego, eh?

Does DR Jose have another career in the bud?? I can't imagine anyone better qualified to photograph food. And then there's the Monkey at MOMA (and elsewhere).
That['s our Jose!! Soon you willbe the most known man in NYC in every field!!
I bet you could easily sell a book of your eating and walking tours of New York complete with Monkey pictures! In fact in could be a whole series for different types of food or different parts of the city
Tour the Theatre District with Jose and Monkey, SoHO, Harlem, etc
Well...
First of all... Thank You.
Secondly... I've had some people inquire if I was planning on putting together a Blurb Book (http://www.blurb.com/), and after checking out what a Blurb Book is, well it's a possibility. However, there is another possibility or two out there too. :)
-
Ah, the GUEST who was viewing this thread has left the room. You tell me.
-
Beautiful photograph of the vixter and Jose.
-
Well, I'm off. Tonight (in about 45 minutes, actually), I'm going to see Capital Playhouse (http://www.capitalplayhouse.com/)'s production of A Grand Night for Singing. I've worked with everyone in the show (all five of them) and really want to see the performers more than the show itself. But it should all be very good. :D
Until later!

DR MattH, the boys are on today! I think there will be a lot of them, Casey, Allison, and Matt(???) the cellmate.
Thanks for the notice, DR Elmore. I'll skim through it later this evening. I got so involved with the adventures of Jessica Fletcher that I didn't stop to watch it before I came upstairs.
The murder mystery has begun!
I bet Jessie Brewer will be accused and tried.
From GENERAL HOSPITAL?
Why her?

G'night!

Vixmom, have your DH get you some headphones and go to www.hulu.com There are lots of tv shows there -- some very old ones.
Does anyone else find it funny our DR Laura is giving out advice on tv viewing? ;)
i think everything DR Laura posts is pretty funny.
Except for her glorious photography, which is stunning.
I also enjoy her posts...

My thoughts are also with the Aussies...

Getting ready for a new TOP CHEF episode.

I am shocked SHOCKED at the poster of Mr Craig Bierko.....oh my!
But of course I would also like to be on the Dish List.

Sorry, I obviously had no idea about the bad blood--the PM said to tell people, so I did. I've always had very good dealings with Mark, going back to when we were trying to solve the "Janis Hansen" mystery.

Same barber, well at least the same barber shop, Chelsea Barber. And it's almost two weeks "old".

Sorry, I obviously had no idea about the bad blood--the PM said to tell people, so I did. I've always had very good dealings with Mark, going back to when we were trying to solve the "Janis Hansen" mystery.
There's no bad blood at all. As I've now said twice, I like Mark and I assume he likes me. I explained my reasons for not linking to his "blog" already and they are quite simple. I just find it odd that someone would come in here and PM everyone like that - it's a little off-putting to me, but that's just me and it's no big deal.
-
I want to hear the dish on GUYS AND DOLLS.

SMOKE FREE, FIRE FREE VIBES FOR DR TOM & DP COLIN-
AND EVERYONE ELSE IN THE LAND OF OZ!
-
I love LOST.
-
It's been a quieter day here. No urgent threat messages for any communities which is wonderful.
Control lines seem to be working.. Winds are always a problem. Fire spotting can start two miles ahead of the fire front. We still hope for rain but then so often that means lighning strikes. There is still a possbility of the major fires joining.
Kangaroos are being seen seeking refuge in outer suburban areas. Wombats and Echidnas are more likely to survive. It will be the tree dwellers that will have been lost.
Once again DRs thank you for the prayers and messages of support for this tragedy still unfolding.
-
I didn't think anything of the PM. In retrospect a post first would have been nice, followed by the PM in case people missed the post. The tell other HHW members was really about emailing him if they want to play the name game. That is how I read it anyway.
LOL-Bruce you got me curious to find the blog. When I didn't easily do so I gave up, I'm not that curious.

We ALL love Elmore!

OH!
My "Brighten Beach" pic also got picked up by Gothamist (http://gothamist.com/2009/02/11/new_express_train_to_brighten_beach.php)!

Yes, they both requested permission.

Both LIFE and LIFE ON MARS were really wonderful and very similarly themed, although I found the end of LIFE ON MARS very sad and moving. It was nice to see my old friend Wallace Shawn in it.

On TV Tonight!
ABC - LOST, LIFE ON MARS
CBS - comedies, CRIMINAL MINDS, CSI: NY
NBC - KNIGHT RIDER, LIFE, LAW & ORDER
FOX - AMERICAN IDOL (two hours)
FX - DAMAGES
Good thing I got the DVR for the bedroom, so I can survive 9PM
Idol (second Hour) and Lost on Living Room DVR
Criminal Minds and Life on the bedroom DVR
der Brucer
I eliminated several shows this season which I used to watch regularly, and some have been canceled (ELI STONE), but despite this, I still have three or four hours during the week when there is just too much on to watch and record everything at that hour and have to make alternate plans.
-
I am about to be buried with an onslaught of review discs, some of which I've been waiting for for weeks (Goodbye, Mr. The horror.
Interesting. I liked SIDEWAYS the first time I saw it. Very much.
-
Who's watching LIFE tonight? It's really a hoot, so far.
I watched it off the DVR an hour after it aired. Wonderful show; wonderful actor. Why isn't this a smash hit? If it were on CBS, I think it would be.
-
I want to hear the dish on GUYS AND DOLLS.
Me, too, and on BILLY ELIOTT and any other show biz dish that's UNFIT to print.
-
I watched 3 1/2 more mysteries with Jessica Fletcher. One took place in New Mexico, one in San Francisco, and one and a half in New York.
So far that's 7 1/2 episodes and only one took place in Cabot Cove so far.
-
Some good guest stars as always: Len Cariou (playing Michael Hagerty again), John Rubenstein, Michael E. Knight.
-
LOST continues on its winning way, another mesmerizing episode. Previews for next week looked quite wonderful, too.
-
And, as I said earlier, LIFE was just excellent. Interesting case, a killer that fooled me completely, and lots of great lines.
-
So I must have a get together with Jose and Larry so I can hear the dish first (really second or third) hand. Not that I need a reason but I do have CDs to deliver to Mr. Moore so we perhaps will get together over this long President's Day weekend.
I walked into midtown to go to the theater since it was such a beautiful evening and I stopped by the Nederlander to see the ticket prices for Guys and Dolls. I judge the cheapest seats against the Playbill discount and the half-price booth (the show has not been on TDF at all even though it's on TKTS). The last two rows of the balcony are $51.50. There is something terribly wrong about that. Oh, well. I then checked out the cheap seats for Blithe Spirit. Granted it's the last couple of rows of the balcony in the Shubert but those tickets are only $36.50. The cheap seats for West Side Story are $46.50.
And no, that doesn't look like Craig Bierko.
I'll talk about 33 Variations tomorrow. I'm too tired now and I have to go to bed.

Ohmigod, that was Cheyenne Jackson playing the rock star on LIFE ON MARS! I would never have recognized him.

I got neither an email or a PM either.
Or is it neither?

Or is it nor rather than or?

I got the blog notice via e-mail.

Probably because you are too good at the initials game and you would be too much competition.

I recorded the show and will look forward to watching it at some point this weekend. I didn't get to it until Sunday last week.

So, who is that in the Guys and Dolls poster? That's not the guy who starred in Music Man a few years ago.
-
I'm going to head to the bedroom now for some much needed rest.
Good night!
-
So, who is that in the Guys and Dolls poster? That's not the guy who starred in Music Man a few years ago.
It's SUPPOSED to be he, but it doesn't look much like the Craig Bierko from THE MUSIC MAN, DISASTER MOVIE, BOSTON LEGAL, and CINDERELLA MAN.
-
We ALL love Elmore!
And yet, strangely, we all also love INTO THE WOODS.

I got neither an email or a PM either.

More sad news...my interviewee and former Our Gang member Shirley Jean Rickert passed away in a Saratoga Springs, NY nursing home on Friday after a long illness, She was 82.
After she left the Our Gang series she worked in the Mickey McGuire series in 1933 and 1934. After outgrowing juvenile roles she worked in films as a dancer, then later worked in burlesque as a stripper under the name Gilda and Her Crowning Glory. Later she worked as a travelling saleswoman selling industrial hardware.
She was on oxygen when I interviewed her, so I had a feeling she would not make it long enough to see her interview in print. I was right.

I am trying to decide where to stay on my Los Angeles trip...should I stay at The Hollywood Orchid off of Franklin in Hollywood or should I stay at The 777 Motor Inn in Studio City on Ventura.
Part of me wants to stay at the Sportsman's Lodge...but they only have internet access in the really expensive rooms >:(
I've walked past The Hollywood Orchid a few times during my past visits to L.A. It's always scared me.
Have you stayed there before?
Scared you?
It is a very nice clean place on a quite street off of Franklin, right behind Grauman's Chinese. I stayed there when I went down to see THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X. The room was huge and had a full kitchen...it was more like an apartment...and only $89.00 a night. An actor from BLOOD DIAMOND was staying there at the same time and we made our acquaintence.

Yep, the ticket prices for Guys & Dolls are quite interesting in comparison to other shows, other theaters. -Although, since they spent a ton of money refurbishing the Nederlander after Rent finished its run, that is supposedly the reason for the not-so-cheap seats. And, if I'm remember correctly, the back row of the Nederlander is not as from the stage as some other back rows.

I've been conforming the Nudie script all night. Finished the new lyrics, which I'm happy with, and had to revise a couple of the newer scenes, which are now good, and one of which will make Pogue smile. I've been putting together a group of actors for our REALLY informal reading next Wednesday - so far we have Matt Ashford for Harry, Cason for John, Jenna Romano for Susie, and I'm waiting to hear from other good folks.
