Well, you've read the notes, the notes had relish on them, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - their currently putting condiments on their cud.

And the word of the day is: SLUMGULLION!

Last night, I went to see the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical revue, A Grand Night for Singing, and let me tell you, it was. I have worked with all the actors (four of them were in Side Show last year) and it was a total delight. They're all good singers. The costumes were simple and clean and the set was lovely. The staging was quite good. Everyone moved well and nothing seemed forced or awkward. I was able to see the cast and chat a bit afterwards and they said that they've been having quite full houses the entire run. They got a partial standing ovation. Not everyone stood, but the applause was genuine and deserved. A Grand time for everyone. ;D

A few years ago, I downloaded a whole bunch of recipes, but have never made any. Here's one that sounds very good:
Hearty Rice Skillet
Total time to prepare: 25 min
Servings: 4

re: American Idol last night.
Funny thing happened. My 3 year old niece was sleeping over. And she watched for the first time. She kept saying that she did not like it. But she also kept commenting in the cutest way.
After the first sing-off all i could hear was her mumbling, "alex made it, cody didn't, why didn't cody make it?"
Then one of her favorite people, jen korbee from the kid's group hi-5 had her sing-off. And my niece kept saying, "they don't like jen". "What's the guy's name who liked jen? (simon)". "Jen didn't make it". She kept repeating this over and over. And then "why didn't jen make it?". Interesting how simon wanted to keep her. That was close!
I actually liked last night's show better. The sing-off concept was interesting (to watch). Although it looked torturous for the contestants since they pitted friends.
One person who i was shocked didn't make it was danny's best friend (danny is the guy whose wife died). I think his bf's name was jamal. I was really surprised considering some of the guys they let through. And i actually think that kid cody would have been very popular with the young girls. He had the right look!

From Mark Rothman:
Okay, I guess I feel the need to defend myself.
First, I never asked Bruce to link his website to my blog, merely to check it out for himself.
I wouldn't, in a million years, have expected him to give me a link. That would require a magnanimity that I never thought he was capable of.
I sent PM's to all of you because I felt I had a right to, as none of you are owned outright by Bruce, and I had what I considered to be a well earned access to you through all the time I spent playing the Initials game with you. I do not consider it poaching.
Bruce has reminded me many times of how many hits he gets here all the time. I can't imagine I'd make a dent in his stats.
I know that many of you liked the game, and might welcome the opportunity to play it again on a fairly regular basis. And I extend that invitation to Bruce as well.
I thought if I posted my invitation here, it wouldn't stay up for long.
Through some key endorsements, (Leonard Maltin, Mark Evanier Ken Levine),my hit numbers have become quite impressive. Getting the twelve or so extra people I'd get from here really doesn't make much difference. I thought you had the right to find me, and play Initials if you have missed it.
As far as ego, I plead guilty. Very guilty. And my ego has grown exponentially with the growing success of my blog. As has Bruce's. The kind of mail and comments I've been getting would turn anybody's head. Yes, my ego has become more and more unbridled. But I'm much more of a specialist than Bruce. My ego is all about my work. I admit it. I'm far more egotistical about my work than he is. I think he is much more egotistical in general, although, at the rate I'm going, I might get there too. At the moment, if there were an Ego Olympics, I would definitely take the Gold in one event. And Bruce would at least medal in the Decathlon.
Until now, I have never tried to trash Bruce in public, and wouldn't do it now, if he didn't take public umbrage at me. In fact one of the posts on my blog praises him and "Planet X", because he deserves it. And he neglected to mention that I'm a big fan of his books. I wasn't going after him on that score. I was actually alluding to someone else. The only thing I needled him about, without referring to him by name, was the notes on his blog. I've tried to keep all this private, and would have been happy if it stayed that way. I didn't out him. He outed himself. Bruce and I are friends, but sometimes it's been a rocky road. One reader mentioned that he thought I was being unfair to Ira Gershwin. If he'd read more thoroughly, he'd have realized that it was a joke.
If this post doesn't survive very long, so be it.
If necessary, it will surface somewhere else. I don't know if you heard, but I have a pretty successful blog.
-
DR Jose, i'm just catching up on yesterday's posts.
re: your comment that i was yelling at my tv. Well i do know what you're referring to. But i actually already knew she didn't make it to top 36. So i was okay (i'm talking about jen korbee). Although i had not realized how close it actually was. It was nice to finally get to see her. Wow i wish we had gotten to see her husband. That was an interesting angle they could have shown.
The worse part is that my niece who never watched was a bit upset. She was actually very happy for those who made it (she clapped). But she was upset that they "didn't like jen" (as she put it).

Miss Fond is very good in 33 Variations. I saw the third performance last night. Moises Kaufman, the writer and director, came out just before the show began to say that it's still a work in progress and, in fact, the actors had gotten new pages about an hour before.
While it's a good and interesting piece I don't think it's as strong as Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde or The Laramie Project. I'm not exactly sure what he's trying to say here. Is it about the choices we make and the way we treat people in our lives after we make those choices? Is it about obsession and how it can drive our lives even in the midst of "problems" (if you don't know what happens I won't reveal any plot points). Fonda gets better as the show progresses and does an excellent job of transforming (if you see the show you'll understand). Colin Hanks (Tom's son) is also very good. The man playing Beethoven is excellent portraying a tortured genius in his last months. Susan Kellerman as a librarian at the Beethoven archives in Bonn is wonderful. The cast is all around very strong. My main complaint is length (or feeling of length). It's about 2 1/2 hours including a 15 minute intermission but, especially in the second act, it feels long. Perhaps it's the new pages but there were times when I felt they were feeling their way. If the show continues to be on TDF I will try to see it again once it's closer to frozen. As I said, Miss Fonda acquits herself well for someone who hasn't been on a Broadway stage in 46 years. She looks great, she knows how to speak and project and she doesn't seem like a film or television star trying to gain respectability by appearing on Broadway.
Tonight I see The Story of My Life which is at The Booth, one of my favorite theatres on Broadway (actually 45th Street).

TOD:
I don't really have any recipes of my own, but I will tell of the time I first made my somewhat popular Christmas Garlic Dip.
The recipe I decided to make it from called for two packages of Philadelphia Cream Cheese and four cloves of garlic. So when I went food shopping, I bought two packages of Philadelphia Cream Cheese and four cloves of garlic. And when I prepared it, I peeled and mashed all four cloves of garlic and added it all to the cream cheese.
I thought that the dip turned out to be a trifle strong and judging by the bug-eye and teary reactions of my guests who tasted it, they thought so too. It wasn't until later, when someone explained to me the difference between a clove and a bulb, did I realize where I went wrong.
I now make one batch of the dip with just four cloves of garlic but I also make another using one whole bulb--some people actually like it that way.

And the word of the day is: SLUMGULLION!
And The Song Of The Day Is: ROCK AND ROLL STEW

Thanks for the report, DR Ben.
Hmmm...while this play doesn't exactly tickle my fancy, I think it would be fascinating to see Ms. Fonda on stage.

From Mark Rothman
For the record, I was not lurking on the website yesterday when it was implied that I was.
If I was, I would have responded immediately.
I checked yesterday's posts early this morning, to see if there was any comments about it. That's when I posted.
I reiterate: I never asked Bruce to link my URL.
This is what I wrote to him, in part:
"I should alert you that in the first post, at the bottom of the page, I essentially trash you pretty good, although not by name. (I would NEVER do that, and this is not why I started the blog). If you can get past that, and still think of me as a friend, I think you will enjoy it very much, and maybe even spread the word about it.. "
I never really thought he'd get past it.
I concluded with:
"If you can keep your sense of humor, and a sense of magnanimity, we should remain friends, and you can take what I wrote as constructive criticism.
If you don't think the shoe fits, then don't wear it. Maybe nobody else will think so either. Then maybe I didn't trash you."
JoseSPiano, I didn't send you a message because you expressed dissatisfaction with the way the Initials game was going towards the end. I didn't think you'd want to play.
See, that's all it was about in the first place.
For those who'd like to reach me about that, or anything else, my email is macchus999@aol.com
Bruce, if after all this, you still think I'm out of line, then maybe you shouldn't like me.

Good morning, all! I did sleep late, till 8:30, and I'm cautiously puttering about the apartment. I've got to do a lot of BABES edits and get further into the SPRING IS HERE score today.
I just had a call from Susanna Moross Tarjan, one of my favorite ladies, who's going through hell with the printing company that just returned to her too many badly printed vocal scores for THE GOLDEN APPLE. I'm getting her dad's BALLET BALLADS to begin proofing, another copyist is sending me the Suite from the film THE CARDINAL to proof,so I suspect March will be a big Moross and Loesser month for me.
One or these days - I don't have the time today - on a recipe day, i will drag out my favorite fruitcake recipe which is quite spectacular and wonderful, leaving all commercial fruitcakes by the side of the road.

DR Ben - Thanks for the theatre report.
I'm interested in seeing 33 Variations mainly because I was almost a part of one of the first readings of the show down in DC. Arena Stage and Georgetown University had a one-week workshop about three years ago. Arena Stage subsequently produced a full-fledged mainstage production a year later as part of their season. -I believe it was also further workshopped at Sundance. In any case...
Since the play does feature the music of Beethoven, "The Diabelli Variations" - which are the "33" of the title - they needed a pianist for the workshop. I was put on stand-by to play for the workshop due to a scheduling conflict with the originally contracted pianist. It was an interesting script then, and I'm sure it's still an interesting script now.

Nothing terribly interesting happened but to perhaps tie in to the rather strange GUYS & DOLLS billboard pic that DR Jose posted last night...CRAIG'S WIFE opened on this date in 1947 at the Playhouse Theatre.
Of further interest, the interior and exterior of Playhouse Theatre are seen in the original THE PRODUCERS movie. It was demollished in 1969.

Yes, in the midst of all that theatre reporting I forgot to mention that piano playing is a big part of the show. We don't hear all 33 variations but we hear many of them and some of Anton Diabelli's waltz, which is a major thrust of the whole play.
The pianist gets her own applause. That's nice.
-
...And between "Lost" and "Damages", it really is best just not to think too much about either show's twists and turns, otherwise, major headaches will ensue. -Or something like that.

As for the Topic of the Day...
Here's one of my favorite cake recipes. It's a bit "fussy", but worth the effort.
Dark Chocolate Brown Sugar Pound Cake with Chocolate Glaze
From the April 1998 issue of "Gourmet"
Yield: Makes 16 to 20 servings
2 1/4 cups cake flour
3/4 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup sour cream (8 1/2 ounces)
2 1/4 sticks (1 cup plus 2 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups packed dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon chocolate extract (optional)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
6 large eggs
3 ounces fine-quality bittersweet chocolate (not unsweetened)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Accompaniments:brown sugar sour cream
strawberries
Do not preheat oven. Butter and flour a 12-cup bundt pan, knocking out any excess flour.
Into a small bowl sift together flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, and salt. In another small bowl stir together baking soda and sour cream.
In a large bowl with an electric mixer (preferably a standing electric mixer) beat together butter and sugars until light and fluffy, about 10 minutes. Beat in extracts and add eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. With mixer at low speed, add flour mixture and sour cream mixture alternately in batches, beating until just combined.
Pour batter into bundt pan and put in middle of cold oven. Set oven to 350°F and bake cake 1 hour and 25 minutes, or until a tester comes out clean. Cool cake in pan on a rack 15 minutes and turn out onto rack to cool completely. Pound cake keeps, wrapped in plastic wrap, at room temperature 1 week. Alternatively, pound cake may be frozen, wrapped well in plastic wrap and foil, 3 months.
Chop bittersweet chocolate and in a double boiler or a metal bowl set over a saucepan of barely simmering water melt chocolate with butter, stirring until smooth. Transfer glaze to a pastry bag fitted with a #3 plain tip (slightly smaller than 1/8 inch). (Alternatively, transfer glaze to a small heavy-duty sealable plastic bag and press out excess air. Snip off 1 corner, making a small hole.) Pipe glaze back and forth over top of cake, letting it drip down sides. Let glaze set 30 minutes at room temperature.
Serve cake with dollops of sour cream and strawberries.
**It's best to double the amount glaze. :)

Good morning!
Beautiful day here, and the highs should be in the mid-to-upper 60s. A gorgeous February day.

...And between "Lost" and "Damages", it really is best just not to think too much about either show's twists and turns, otherwise, major headaches will ensue. -Or something like that.
Haven't gotten to last night's DAMAGES yet, and I probably won't until Sunday. Just too much stuff to watch, and most of it exceptional!

Re: John McGiver. Does anyone remember his short-lived series MANY HAPPY RETURNS? It's one of my earliest TeeVee memories, I think mostly due to Mr. McGiver's very distinctive ideolect.
I remember it. I also remember how surprised I was that it didn't last long. Back in those days with almost no access to ratings, when shows went off after a brief run, it was always surprising.

More semi-random musing:
I can't stand the woman who is eating at the Chinese(?) restaurant in the Geico commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMoLzKBMJ38). What the heck is she playing? First she sits there smiling at the money-pack and then acts shocked when told it's the money she could have saved blah blah blah and then she is suddenly all smiles and says "I know..." like she's the cat that just swallowed the canary. What the--?!?
Ooooh! Let's talk about commercials we hate. I cannot stand the car insurence commercials with the obnoxious chunky actress with the black hair blowing a kazoo and trying to be funny. She isn't.

And here's a recipe for something to have before you have the chocolate pond cake...
Turkey Meatloaf with Cranberry Glaze
Ľ cup Brown sugar
˝ cup Mashed cranberry sauce
2 pounds Ground turkey
ľ cup Milk
ľ cup Bread crumbs
3 Eggs; lightly beaten
1˝ teaspoon Salt
⅛ teaspoon Pepper
Ľ cup Diced red onions
˝ cup Chicken broth (just enough to moisten)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
For the glaze, spread the brown sugar over the bottom of a greased loaf pan and spread the cranberry sauce over the sugar.
In a large bowl mix all the remaining ingredients until well incorporated. Form the meat mixture into the loaf pan, laying out over the cranberry glaze.
Bake in 350 degree oven for 1 hour.
Serve with green beans (almondine) and potatoes of your choosing.

Words with a K are funny. Kazoos are funny, not if you blow them but if you SAY them.

I really liked David Pogue's article about Twitter.
"Twitter, in other words, is precisely what you want it to be. It can be a business tool, a teenage time-killer, a research assistant, a news source — whatever. There are no rules, or at least none that apply equally well to everyone."
For myself, it's truly become a strange and wonderful "addiction". For better or worse. ;)

Oh, my. Canned Corned Beef!!! I used to love that. I haven't had it since before I moved away from Minnesota. I don't know what it is about that stuff but I'm salivating just thinking of canned Argentinian corned beef (the can always said it was from Argentina).

I make a chicken pie which Vixdad loves. I made it up and I I don't have exact measurements. I admit I cheat on the pie crust. I find the Pillsbury refrigerated piecrust an acceptable substitute for home made - for the truly good cooks amongst you feel free to make the pie crust from scratch
Pillsbury Pie Crust
4 lbs boneless chicken breast
1/2 stick butter
1 small Vidalia (or other sweet white) onion
1 package (10 oz I think) fresh white mushrooms
1/2 package fingerling carrots
1 can sweet peas (another short cut I take - purists feel free to shell your own)
1 cup white cooking wine
some flour for thickening purposes
salt and pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F
put bottom layer of pie crust in deep dish pie plate
Clean and thickly slice the mushrooms
peel and thinly slice the onion
melt 1/4 stick of butter in heavy skillet and sautee onions and mushroom until onions are translucent - remove from pan
Clean and cut the chicken breasts into bite size cubes
Melt remainder of butter in skillet add chicken and keep turning until pieces are golden brown on all sides.
remove from pan
add wine to pan drippings and cook over low heat till reduced add flour (or corn starch if you prefer) until desired thickness (sometimes I add a drop of Gravy Master in here for color)
Put chicken, onion mushroom mixture and cleaned carrots back in skillet and stir until nicely mixed
Pour the whole thing into bottom pie crust
Stir in drained peas stir gently taking are not to squish peas
put top layer on pie and seal put a couple of decorative steam holes witha fork
bake at 375 until crust is brown and flakey (about 30 minutes)
Serves 6 - 8

I forgot to mention AS THE WORLD TURNS last night. I did get a chance to watch the episode. While I'm glad the mystery story is now underway, I absolutely HATED that it was Reg who was the murder victim. I always liked him, and I think the boneheaded writers underused a potentially fascinating character. Why not have a love triangle with Luke-Noah-Reg? Luke and Reg always seemed to have a connection (and judging by his reaction to Reg's death, maybe something happened we never got to see on-screen), and it's a waste of a good character.

From some of the gossip I've heard lately, the show is in such danger of being pulled that they have no money for extras - which explains why there were no police in the kidnapping or anybody in the bar - and I guess they're weeding the cast ASAP.

I will, of course, let this post speak for itself, which I feel it does very well. A couple of corrections, however...
I was absolutely asked to mention the blog here - maybe the word "link" wasn't used.
There are two mentions in this post about posts being removed. I have, in all these years, removed, I think, two posts, and I removed them because they were made by an obvious troublemaker and stalker - everyone knew it. So, would I have removed a post if Mr. Rothman had come and plugged his blog - no. Will I remove the post above, even though it fairly drips with attitude? No. The End.

Miss Piggy was just interviewed on The View - apparently "she" has just "written" a book
Tomovoz may know this, but Miss Piggy made her professional debut on a skit which introduced Miss Lani Hall singing the incredible Dave Frishberg piece "Wheelers and Dealers" on an early 1970s Herb Alpert special. You can find it on YouTube. Lani and band are performing live, BTW--it's not a lip synch, to her lasting credit.

It feels so very raw. Vixdad tried giving me some cough medicine last night before bed (doctor said it was OK to use some Robatussin) but I didn;t notice any improvement.

Obviously your endorsement didn't matter to me that much, or I wouldn't have told you or written it. Check the e-mail. I could print it in it's entirety. There was no "asking". No mention of linking. You admit that yourself. I know you think your website is that important. That's one of the Decathlon events. If "Dripping with attitude" was the criteria, you'd have to take out almost all the posts you've ever written about me.

The comments: The cake part was dry and dense. The chocolate ganache icing was a little grainy. And the sea salt caramel glaze seemed to be missing the sea salt. However, it was "all organic". :-\
Is this from a web report, or from personal experience?
From personal experience. Yesterday. :-\
*And, then, to add insult to injury, I had hoped to have a cup of Hot Chocolate from 'wichcraft in Bryant Park, but they weren't selling hot chocolate yesterday?!?!?!??!

*And, then, to add insult to injury, I had hoped to have a cup of Hot Chocolate from 'wichcraft in Bryant Park, but they weren't selling hot chocolate yesterday?!?!?!??!
However, I could tell that the cupcake had potential. I could taste the pinot noir, and it complemented the chocolate. A good balance of flavors. It was the texture that turned me off. Maybe it would have been better had I come earlier in the day when the cupcake was fresher - and hadn't been sitting out on a display tray for a couple of hours.

It didn't take long to figure where this was going ;D ;D

First, I never asked Bruce to link his website to my blog, merely to check it out for himself.
I wouldn't, in a million years, have expected him to give me a link. That would require a magnanimity that I never thought he was capable of.
...
If this post doesn't survive very long, so be it.
A. Considering that this site is filled with folks hawking their own endeavors, I would be amazed to see bk pull a post that linked to something he didn't like.
B. If bk pulled all the posts that took issue with him, his ideas or his opinions, my post count would be in single digits.
C. Your use of PM/Email rather than an upfront post with a "join me on my blog" link does suggest, perhaps unfairly, a certain guilt.

Another of my ex-wife's favorite things to make was London Broil, wherein you'd take a slab of beef, put a packet's worth of Lipton Onion Soup over it and then stick that in the oven and somehow it came out okay. She also made a really good chicken and rice dish that was baked in the oven and involved rice. It was good, too.

Portland Public Schools has just announced their "plan" to make up the many lost snow days. In addition to cancelling one "teacher development" day (where the kids wouldn't have been in school), and extending the school year by one day, they are now starting school 10 minutes early for the duration of the year. I hope their "plan" includes a special attendant who can come and drag Zach out of bed each morning. ;)

It is VERY windy here in Manhattan. I went to Trader Joe's at lunch to get some things for the home environment. I bought lettuce, carrots, grape tomatoes, milk, some
Port Salut Cheese (http://bonjourlafrance.net/french-food/french-cheese/port-salut.htm)
a pack of Dark Chocolate bars and some smoked turkey. I LOVE Port Salut. I had it first in France when I spent a summer there in 1988. Anthony doesn't like it much so I get it when he's away. He prefers Muenster.
As I was walking home with my Marks and Spencers bag the wind came up so strongly that I had to stop walking. Winds are predicted to be over 50mphs. I may not walk to the theatre tonight. We will see how it is at 6:30pm

Der Brucer,
Bruce seemed highly insulted by my original e-mail.
Not being a groupie who attends this sight religiously, I couldn't tell you what Bruce's policy is about pulling posts.
I thought making an upfront post would be flaunting it in Bruce's face, and I thought that would be "unseemly".
No guilt is involved here. If you feel I didn't have the right to send you a message, that's unfortunate.
I think I deserve better than this. Be better than this.

Phoenix, kidnap-for-ransom capital
…
It was Phoenix, after all: More ransom kidnappings happen here than in any other town in America, according to local and federal law enforcement authorities. Most every victim and suspect is connected to the drug-smuggling world, usually tracing back to the western Mexican state of Sinaloa, Phoenix police report.
Arizona has become the new drug gateway into the United States. Roughly half of all marijuana seized along the U.S.-Mexico border was taken on the state's 370-mile border with Mexico.

Do you have problems with mud slides caused by rainfall in burned out areas, or is the terrain mostly flat?
der Brucer
It is hilly to mountainous area where nearly all the fires are or have been. The valleys of course funnel the fires. Eucalpyts "explode" with fire and this of course increases the heat. Much of vegetation regeneration relies on bush fires. The problem is of course that we like to live in the areas!
Mud slides are not a big issue - more of an issue is the impingment on our water catchments. We have so little water as it is. I thought the Califonia Hills north of LA were simialr to many of the areas here - but of course here they are covered in eucalypt forest and scrub. Now to check on today's Fire reports.

LATIMES (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/season/2009/02/can-wall-e-make.html)
Can 'Wall-E' make Oscar history?
...
Because of its unusual pedigree, "Wall-E" now has the opportunity to make Oscar history and be the first animated feature to win BIG outside the best animated film and music categories (plus one win for "The Incredibles" in 2004 for Sound Editing when there were only three nominees in the category and two were animated). Sure, three of its six nods come for the usual areas (music score, song, animated film)), but it has a real shot in the other three categories in which it's competing: sound editing, sound mixing and, particularly, best original screenplay. It has a decent chance to rack up at least four wins if the Oscar gods are on its side but Original Screenplay is the nomination co-writer/director Andrew Stanton told me he is happiest about.
"I am prouder to be in writing more than anything else. At Pixar we say 'story, story, story.' It's the root of everything," he says. "It's the biggest pat on the back I can think of. We put ourselves fully into every aspect but it's all in service of the story."
It could be a tough sell to the overall academy (every branch votes on the final screenplay award) as a lot of members just don't understand how a virtually silent movie, in which the main characters speak their own language, could possibly have been "written." But Stanton says it's no different than the process any other writer would go through.
"How you tell a story is just as important as what the story is. In my mind these characters were gonna speak. They just weren't gonna speak in a language you and I knew. When they spoke and why they spoke was just as important as if you could understand their language," he says.
Key to all this was the contribution by the sound team led by Ben Burtt whom Stanton calls his most important cast member.
"I needed someone who could make language out of sound and convey intention and emotion through sound," he says. The sound branch must agree since it has awarded Burtt and company two nominations , and it certainly is the most unique work in a category where the winner usually is the loudest movie (again, all branches get to vote for the final winner here, and they often don't get subtlety).
…
Like "Milk" and its uncanny timeliness in regard to Proposition 8, "Wall-E" is being celebrated for its social consciousness and environmental concerns, but Stanton is blatantly honest in his original intention.
"I am very honored it is being associated with issues of the planet, but I would be lying if I said that was my agenda. It wasn't. It's not about global warming. I wanted to show the last robot on earth, and I wanted to show the loneliness so I could have the most potent love story imaginable," he says. "Anything I chose environment-wise was a selfish choice in order to make the love story work."
So can this lovestruck "Hello Dolly"-loving tin 'toon actually turn the tide and make Oscar history by prevailing in some categories, primarily in Writing, where animated films are strangers to the winners circle? Certainly it would be a popular win with the audience, but the academy may be just too set in its ways to go for the unexpected.
For Andrew Stanton, what counts is the experience of getting to make this very different concept come to life; everything else is gravy.
"I made 'Wall-E' out of an exclusive love of cinema and thought that might make it an odd man out. But I guess that was the right thing to do," he says now. "It gives me a lot of confidence to follow that voice again."

I love cupcakes. I don't get to eat them any more. Dr. Radakrishnan has seen to that.
Good for him! Are you feeling better?
Actually I am feeling tons better now that I have cut down a lot on carbs/sugars. And I don't feel constantly hungry either.
PS: Dr. Radakrishnan is a she.
I must have missed the she part. I'm glad you are feeling better.:)

Back from the tour of the faboo conference facilities at our local hospital and a fun afternoon with my mom. We went to lunch and then grocery shopping. When she goes to the grocery on the bus from the retirement home, she feels rushed. Today, I did my small shopping then waited at the Starbuck's kiosk while she savored the Kroger Marketplace. She's probably taking a nap now.

DR Ginny, my brother-in-law retired. He had been looking forward to it for months and had plans to do absolutely nothing for the first few weeks. On his first day, the office called and insisted he come in, because they couldn't figure anything out at all without him.
My workplace did the unprecedented and brought my replacement in for my last week. It was helpful to her AND to me - I walked away from there knowing that the job was in very capable hands and have not lost a wink of sleep worrying about what's happening there.

Usually, there is the hope that there's a period of time when that salary is not being paid to anyone and that the replacement will come in much lower on the pay scale than the predecessor.

Third-treatment vibes for DR Laura's sister!

We hear about kidnappings rather frequently here. I don't mean to seem racist (a terrible crime here), but they are usually Mexican males.

It is difficult for me to imagine any workplace would not have a qualified employee train the new person before leaving.
Well, there are two occasions when this happens.
A. Retirement - the time frame for planning on a replacement is too long - so management forgets about it 'til it's too late.
B. Employee quits (gives two weeks notice) - and two weeks is rarely time enough to hire a replacement (even if the replaceement is an in-house transfer, you usually have to "advertize the positon" and do interviews and evaluations).
Also, today's workplace seems adverse to succession planning - no matter how often they get burned.
It's even more fun when a worker is a "one man show" - Woody is the only billing clerk at his market; there are no comprehensive written procedures for the job; if he should be absent for more than a day, they would be required to call in someone from out-of-town and hope they could help (of course all of the out-of-town candidates are in "one man show" jobs of their own. The store has no provision for Woody to ever be able to use his vaction time.

MAY THIS ROUND BE EASIER THAN THE LAST ONE!

All this time I thought the new movie THE UNINVITED was to be a remake of the 1944 Ray Milland film. To my relief, I now realize it is a remake of the 2003 Korean Horror film JANGHWA, HONGRYEON.

I kinda got excited about a remake since it may be the only way the original film will get released on DVD, and I was both grateful and sorry that ithe new UNINVITED was not what I hoped/feared. The old film, 9 guess, is too subtle for today's obvious school of horror.

Someone just had the really bad form to send me someone's private PM to them - and I have to say I'm a little nauseous from what I read. There are times when I just don't understand things and I'm afraid this is one of them. Ah, well.

It's too warm here. I can't get enough cool air into the apartment and the heat from the radiators, even though they're turned off, is irking me.

I think I will call Harrriet's Kitchen and get myself some chicken, not fried, and some mac&cheese. And some green beans and carrots. Or do I want a burger?

Good Evening!
WHEW!!! IT'S W-I-N-D-Y out there!
I was down by Columbia University a little while ago, and as soon as I turned onto 122nd street... YOWZA!!!! There was a group of us, and we all really had to stop and plant ourselves in order not to be blown over. One gust was so strong that I was able to lean into it and not fall down. Cool, funny and a little dangerous all at the same time.
*And since tomorrow is trash day, there was lots of stuff blowing down the street and in the air.

I think that's probably a fair assessment, and he's very good at it. But the thought of all this e-mailing behind backs is just anathema to me. It happened once before on this site, when a former dear reader caused all sorts of problems by doing the exact same sort of thing - e-mailing behind backs, causing people to leave the site and take sides - awful and disgusting. Most people finally realized what it was all about, that it was some personal crap going on, but still some people didn't even bother to hear the other side of the story or even care that there WAS another side to the story - a side, I may add, that explained everything.
I have told the person involved, who has sent me a barrage (well, three) of the most disturbing and nauseating e-mails, that I am done. Finis. No more.
Whether others have e-mailed him supportive e-mails while taking the time to insult me, I don't know. Certainly he is saying it's so, and certainly, in the case of the PM that he forwarded, it IS so, although he didn't forward me any more, so maybe he's just BSing. In any case, it's really put a damper on my day. I shouldn't let it, but I think if you put yourself in my shoes, you'll understand why. But, as elmore says, he's probably reveling in me thinking about shutting down the site. One of the things he said was "There's dissension in the ranks." And here I thought I'd graduated high school.

When there are "issues," especially when I'm not directly involved, I prefer not to take sides.
On that note (B-flat), I think we need some Angela Lansbury and Jerry Herman:
If music is no longer lovely,
If laughter is no longer lilting,
If lovers are no longer loving,
Then I don't want to know.
If summer is no longer carefree,
If children are no longer singing,
If people are no longer happy,
Then I don't want to know.
Let me hide ev'ry truth from my eyes with the back of my hand,
Let me live in a world full of lies with my head in the sand.
For my memories all are exciting.
My memories all are enchanted,
My memories burn in my head with a steady glow;
So if, my friends, if love is dead,
I don't want to know.

TODAY IN THEATRE HISTORY...
Today in Non-Theatre History...
It's Abraham Lincoln's birthday...exactly 200 years ago today. Also, the NAACP was founded in 1909...exactly 100 years ago today. :)

Well, I must now leave and go downtown to usher for a new play, Israel Horovitz's "Sins of the Mother (http://www.harlequinproductions.org/seasonpages/09/sins.html)," put on by Harlequin Productions. Here's what it says on Harlequin's website:
We're thrilled to be working with world-renowned playwright Israel Horovitz on his new play before it opens in New York. When a young man returns to the small fishing town he grew up in, he is drawn into a mystery that threatens to reveal his own past. A powerful and compelling drama about revenge, forgiveness, and the comically human struggle to decipher which is which.
This sounds very good!

This crap still goes on - I am now being told by the person (I think you can guess who it is, but if you can't, it's the person who was posting here earlier) that not only did the person who's PM he sent me have some unkind things to say about me, but apparently he's received several e-mails defending him and dissing me. I think you all know me well enough that I grow weary of this crap and, as has been the case several times in the past, it just makes me want to shut the site down. I'm really quite upset by all this childishness, frankly. I'm going to eat now and decide what I want to do.
Mr. Rothman has a very strange way of trying to get converts to his new blog. He apparently believes that we will go running from this site to his, if he insults us by referring to us as groupies.
What Mr. Rothman doesn't grasp is that we do not gather here, day in and day out, hour after hour; because we are groupies, crazed fans, or fanatics of any kind. We gather here at HHW because we are friends. We are friends with BK and we are friends with each other. And even when we squabble with each other, we never attempt to tear down or destroy each other.
I guess some lessons just can't be learned.

MR BK - I think the best thing you can do this evening is watch ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN - with it's stunning visuals and rousing Ronald Stein score.
Remember that the two major motivations for any human behavior are LOVE or JEALOUSY.
One of them makes the world go 'round - the other is completely useless and never accomplishes anything constructive.
I know which one motivates me to come to HHW every day - many times a day.
In a way, for me, it's kind of like those kids that go see RENT or SPRING AWAKENING time after time...a feeling of being connected to the wonderful world of entertainment - sharing time and words with those who actually make their living in that wacky world - and hearing about the lives of all the other people gathered here from all over the U.S. and beyond - being part of the larger world.
HHW is a unique place on the web. I don't even think "blog" is the proper term for it. It is a community. The nice thing is - anyone can be a part of it...I don't like it when there is a disturbance...
And if nothing else....just start singing the song that plays at the beginning of the radio show.

Good evening all. Well, I caught up on three days worth of posts, and I'm tired out! We went through another round of illness with Tobes, thankfully just a cold, but it's left me desperately sleep deprived. Glad to be back where I belong, on HHW
-
Years & years ago we had two very, very very good friends. They were best friends with each other. Friend #1 was frustrated with friend #2 & kept telling us stuff about friend #2 we didn’t need to hear, much of what were negative comments about us. Some of it was pretty bad.
I am very pleased to say we did not let it ruin our friendships. They are still best friends while we are still in touch with friend #1, & still very, very good friends with #2.
I will admit this was so long ago I’m the only one that remembers the details.

Welcome back, DR Ann. I hope you and DR Jed and "Tobes" are able to get some good, well-deserved rest this weekend.

I had fried chicken for dinner - from Popeye's. Haven't done that in ages and ages and I just felt I needed it. Happily, they screwed up and only gave me one biscuit, so I didn't overdo that. I had two chicken breasts, one of which was really tiny, so that's good, too. So, now I'm thinking about a sweet - I'll toddle over to Gelson's and take a gander at what they've got. Maybe some fruit, maybe some biscotti, maybe something wholly other.
-
Because I now would not put anything past him, if anyone receives a copy of any e-mail I sent IN RESPONSE to the awful e-mails I was receiving, in other words OUT OF CONTEXT, please let me know. I will then post each and every e-mail here so you can see what I was dealing with today. I hope I don't have to do that, but anyone who would forward a private PM is not to be trusted.

She's always wonderful. She was great on OZ and she's currently sensational on DEXTER. And a wonderful match for Ignacio on UGLY BETTY.
And is it just me or have the makeup folks been using some hair dye and more makeup on Tony Plana so the difference in their ages wouldn't look SO pronounced.

I watched three (or four) more episodes of MURDER SHE WROTE. (They all kind of start to meld together in my head after awhile.) I think I have six more to do.
-
Next, I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Yep, the boys were there, but the progress on their murder investigation is going to be slow going (typical of soaps).
-
The haters and naysayers will never win in the end.
And what of the "whozzits" and "whatzits"? Surely they cannot win, either!
I've received two e-mails today as, I assume, has everyone here.
As soon as I realized who it was from and what it was about, I was more over it than I was over the concept of President George Bush in January 2001.
What the hell do I have to do with any of this, I asked myself. Myself answered rather vigorously that something was awry, amiss and askew.
All that BK has written, thus far, has led me to the conclusion that myself was accurate.
-
Next, I enjoyed UGLY BETTY. I just love Judith Light, and the woman looked dazzling in that white gown at the end of the show. Just stunning. Glad to see some chinks in Whilamina's armor starting to show, too. Makes it much easier to root for her romance.
-
GREY'S ANATOMY came next.
Nice way to write Melissa George off the show, and that's fine with me. I hated her on ALIAS and I didn't like her here. I thought the Izzy-contest storyline was kind of silly, but it was entertaining.

I ended my evening watching last night's LAW & ORDER. It was a mess of a case and trial but an intriguing conclusion.

Really? That's very funny. Back in the mid-1970s, Janis and Dory could make me suicidal before one side of an LP was over. I still love 'em both. I always liked Janis Ian. She and Dory previn could always perk me up in the 70s!
I've noted that IMDb says that Dory and Andre were married from 1959 to 1970, yet she went by "Dory Langdon" in the early 60s (born, according to IMDb, Dory "Langan" in 1925). Any idea when she changed her name professionally? Two of her Oscar nominations ("Pepe" and "Two for the Seesaw") were under "Dory Langdon" and a third, in 1966, was under "Dory Previn".
I first sat up and took notice of her with her work on "Inside Daisy Clover".

From the "Things I Learned When I Used To Run A Sheet Music Store"...
She started going by Dory Previn in 1965, shortly after her nervous breakdown. -Which was brought on in part due to her severe fear of flying. By that time André Previn's conducting career had kicked into high gear, and due to her fear of flying, she did not join him on his travels.

I thought that it was very well done except that there too many close-ups...not enough shots of the whole stage (or just a little further away) so that you get more of a sense of what's going on on the whole stage. I think some moments were lost because of this, but not so many that the show was ruined.
