Well, you've read the notes, the notes were filled with lovely love and Cupid's arrows, and now it is time for you to post until the love-filled cows come home.

DR vixmom:  My lunch yesterday was a smoked turkey sandwich on dark rye, made at home with my own hands.

I am "over" my cold.  Side effects continue to linger -- I tire more easily than I like, for instance.  And in the evenings, I'm ready for bed way earlier than normal.  But these things shall pass.

Topic of the Day:  just about anything by Donna Summer. :D
Title: Re: MY FUNNY VALENTINE
Post by: George on February 14, 2009, 12:35:23 AM
My favorite album of hers was her double-LP (and I got it new on vinyl back in the late 70s), "Donna Summer:  Live and More (http://www.amazon.com/Live-More-Donna-summer/dp/B000M6CEY2/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1234599859&sr=1-8)."  It was a live concert with a bonus studio recording of the medley, "MacArthur Park Suite" at the end.  When it was eventually released on CD (http://www.amazon.com/Live-More-Donna-Summer/dp/B000001F3A/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1234599859&sr=1-2), they had to use a different song ["Theme From The Deep (Down Deep Inside)"] because "MacArthur Park Suite" was too long for the single CD.  I MUCH prefer the "MacArthur Park Suite" over "Theme From The Deep (Down Deep Inside)."  But I love that album.  When I was in college, I sold some of my vinyl albums, this one included, but I did eventually get it on CD and the Dance Collection (http://www.amazon.com/Dance-Collection-Donna-Summer/dp/B000001FKP/ref=pd_sim_m_2) CD that had the almost 18-minute "MacArthur Park Suite." :)

Runners-up for me are

Vicki Sue Robinson's "Turn the Beat Around"

Laura Branigan's recording of "Gloria"

- and if it counts as disco:

Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine's recording of "1-2-3"

I would probably agree that it wasn't the best episode this season. And i also wonder why melinda would "lie". Although that said, it wasn't a full out lie. I mean she was actually working on the same case. And i think jim/sam can see that. I guess he just probably wonders why she would need to lie. I think she could have just said she was going to help with the search with eli and left it at that.
As for why she didn't use her intuitions to know she was being televised. I'm sure she knew she was being televised. But she probably had no idea jim/sam would see it the exact second they filmed her. Also re: intuition they never really show her as being that intuitive. To me not in her general life. Good morning, all! I dreamed that a whole group of friends from the Kern-Herbert project and I went to a horror film and this dream became intertwined with a dream about a group of 1917 Kern musicals I was touring with as the musical supervisor. I remember little now of this megillah: talking on the phone to Sargent Aborn of Tams-Witmark about the production, riding in a car to the horror film and going to the balcony to look for better seats, talking to a young lady at the box office who was seeing the shows when the tour got to Egypt or wherever, trying to wash my hair with a shampoo that would lighten it because there was no other in the bathroom and wonderng why a friend had left it behind, and waking up because of mass murder in the theatre. Oy.

I suppose it was last night's PSYCH that brought this on; it certainly wasn't the bio I'm currently reading.

I have a Finale lesson at 11 and this evening, dinner and a visit with DR Ben.

I think I will take my walk, wander about the Upper West Side for a bit, pick up a treat for DR Ben's visit, and then come back and do a little Finale work before my lesson. I'm getting worried about this Finale 2006 program possibly expiring before too long, and if Josh doesn't take care of registering it, I'll lose it and have to find a used or program for 2006 sitting on a shelf somewhere. Does anyone know of a possible source if I need to handle this myself?

I am in that minority than does not love or obsess over granite countertops. Some are lovely, yes, and one friend who has them says they're indestructible, but I had Corian in my last kitchen and was really very happy with it. I did a lot of Indian cooking at one time and some tumeric stained the Corian. Matt did a little research and learned that Soft Scrub is a bit abrasive and took the stain right out, without any shadow.

I agree that lighter floors show less dirt than darker ones. In one house I installed a lovely dark cobalt blue tile in the kitchen, thinking it wouldn't show the dirt. It did. But the white tile I installed in the bathroom did not. Live and learn.

Oh, yes, I got an on-line Valentine from Anthony. I sent him a card and an on-line card as well.

Hi Ben.

Post by: Jeanne on February 14, 2009, 07:09:54 AM
When you're working with small spaces, as I was in my last house, you can often use pricier materials, because you need so little of them. When I remodeled the bathroom in my last house I used marble tiles for the countertop. Since Matt did all the work we were able to achieve a posh look at a budget price. In fact, the whole remodel was the price of the first cabinet estimate, ie cabinet ONLY.

I have a friend in my old neighborhood who buys house that really need work. He guts them, then does much of the work himself, assisted by a handyman who works very cheaply. Bart's houses always turn out very nicely. He is VERY budget-conscious, but he is also extremely talented artistically. You can indeed achieve a lot without paying a lot.

Since I watched SHADOWS last night (but didn't write much of it up since I was working on finshing up the MURDER SHE WROTE review), I will work on the remaining bonus features on that Criterion disc before moving on.

It's obvious this is a simple reprint of an earlier Criterion release (2004?) of SHADOWS. There don't appear to be any new bonuses or a newly remastered transfer. The film is always going to look raw and grainy so I guess they just didn't bother trying to make it look any better.

Speaking of Miss Linda Purl, I meant to mention the other night after I watched it that Linda Purl did guest star on one of the episodes I watched in this 9th season set. As it turned out, she was the murderer. Funny because she guest starred in an earlier season episode (one set in the South with Barry Nelson as a Tennessee Williams-like playwright), and she was the murderer on that one, too. Though MURDER SHE WROTE recycled guest stars many times during its 12 season run, it's rare when the same guest star would be the murderer more than once. Sometimes they'd be the murderer in one episode and years later be the victim in another episode.

RE: GHOST WHISPERER:

Melinda isn't particularly intuitive at all about her own life; that's not her talent. She sees ghosts and can communicate with them. But she's not psychic; she doesn't have visions about the future. So, it didn't surprise me at all that she got caught on camera. As I said, I just saw no reason for her to be lying about being at the firehouse. It's a small town and an easy lie to refute. It was just dumb, and I think clunky writing on the part of the show's writers just to add some conflict between Melinda and Sam/Jim so he'd doubt whether he could get serious about a girl who'd lie so easily. Bah! I guess they have to stretch out Melinda's revelation to Sam about his true identity until the end of the season for the cliffhanger.

I'm excited to see it, and am SO happy that now MONK, PSYCH, BURN NOTICE, and LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT will be available to me in HD after such a long period of waiting.

Three disco or semi-disco songs that I bet no one other than Tomovoz might know, though 2 of them did chart:

I'll Tell You
Lonely Woman
The Real Thing

All three recorded by Sergio, of course, the last one written by and featuring Stevie Wonder (it's the least discofied of the three, but got a lot of dance airplay.  The first two were off of Sergio's one "real" disco album, a pretty lamentable affair that nonetheless featured incredible horn charts by Tower of Power).

There's also a great OCR on that other Bruce's label.

The original release on the short lived IBR (?) was mastered incorrectly. In sounded as if it was recorded in an echo chamber.

They also release another version of The Secret Garden and Sugar Babies.

They were release on LP, CD & Cassette. Each version was different. (The cassette version having the most music)

I believe when BL re-released them on cd Secret Garden had all the music that was featured on the CD and Sugar Babies had everything with one the exception of one cut: Ronn Lucas did a musica/comedy #.

Sugar Babies couldn't be called a true Original Cast album even though it was recorded during the run. It featured songs that were cut before the show opened, songs cut during the run, songs added during the run. Featured performers who were replacement cast members and others who appeared on the Sugar Babies tour.

Dance A Little Closer has some lovely numbers and some bad numbers and poor Len Cariou's voice was, unfortunately, fairly trashed by that point.

Good morning all.  I'm up, as is Toby.  I "slept in" this morning until almost 7.  Since my usual waking time is 5 or earlier, this felt wonderful.  Toby is getting over his cold, and I am slowly getting over mine.  Thank god for Afrin.
Last night, DH Jed and I let a dear friend of ours take care of Toby, and we went out for a night on the town.  We had some fabulously fabulous Greek food, including souvlaki (I had chicken, Jed had lamb) on noodles in garlic sauce, and some tzatziki with a radish base instead of cucumber, which was delicious.
Then we went to see our own DR TCB in the production of Glorious.  Well, I wish the reviewer of last week could have been at this performance, because it was just marvelous.  DH Jed and I both agreed that our TCB has such perfect comedic timing and delivery, and he was so very funny.  The show itself was very enjoyable too, and the woman playing Florence Foster Jenkins was absolutely hysterical!  It takes a great singer to be able to deliberately sing that badly.  All in all, we really enjoyed it, and it was great to have a night out, just the two of us, to relax a bit.  It's been a very long week.
When we got home, we had about 20 minutes of peace before Toby woke up and the usual nighttime hell of trying to sleep with a stuffy nose began.  Today I'm going shopping for remedies that might possibly help.  I've already got the humidifier and the bulb aspirator, but there must be something else.

Oh yes, Happy Valentines Day to one and all, and also all and one.

The Secret Garden had some beautiful ballads: Something Special being the standout.

It had a great studio cast

Barbara Cook
Judy Kaye
John Cullum
George Rose
Max Showalter.

The major problem in my opinion was the varying quality of the lyrics. There were three credited lyricists. Some of them were stronger writers than others.

The "tone" of the score was less dark than the Simon/Norman version that played Broadway.

  1. Overture
   2. Any Minute Now
   3. I Will Do Nothing
   4. Just Like Me
   5. Wings
   6. Dickon Is My Name
   7. Somewhere In the Past
   8. Wishful Thinking
   9. My Mother
  10. Before You Know It's Summer
  11. I've Got a Secret
  12. No One Needs Me
      A Secret Place
  13. Something Special
  14. Entr'acte
  15. The Likes of You and Me
  16. Traditions
  17. I Don't Want to Be an Angel
  18. One Patch of Blue
  19. How We Love Children
  20. My Favorite Song
      Wings (Reprise)
  21. Weave a Spell
  22. Your Best Foot
  23. I Shall Live Forever
  24. The Secret Garden (Right Before Our Eyes)
  25. The Finale

The cd that BK re-release did not have tracks  # 12, 17, 23 which were all I think Collin's songs

some trivia posted on IMDB site re: Can't Stop the Music

    *  The first draft of this movie was written by Bruce Vilanch.

    * This film was promoted with a nationally syndicated one-hour TV special entitled Magic Night (1980) (TV) also directed by Nancy Walker and featuring a roller-skating Cher, a pajama-clad Hugh M. Hefner and a The Village People song cut from the film ("Ready for the '80s!").

    * Glenn Hughes actually did work as a tollbooth operator when he was discovered by the Village People and invited to join the group.

    * $10 million of the film's $20 million budget was spent on a lavish world-wide publicity campaign that included spectacular openings across the United States and Europe.

    * The leading role was originally offered to Olivia Newton-John who turned it down to do Xanadu (1980). She was replaced by Valerie Perrine.

    * Bruce Jenner turned down the titular role in Superman (1978) to appear in this film.

    * Was the film that "won" the very first RAZZIE award for Worst Picture.

    * Playing on a 99-cent double bill with Olivia Newton-John in Xanadu (1980), this film "inspired" John Wilson to create the Golden Raspberry (RAZZIE) Awards in 1980.

    * This film is listed among the 100 Most Enjoyably Bad Movies Ever Made in Golden Raspberry Award founder John WIlson's book THE OFFICIAL RAZZIEŽ MOVIE GUIDE.

I don't really care about granite countertops and I think that stainless steel appliances look cold and have no desire to have them in my kitchen.

There are a lot of good appliances you can get for less than $7000

It isn’t just about peanut butter, it is about all the other products that might contain a peanut product shipped from the contaminated source.  Most major peanut butter brands are ok.  Even knowing this I went directly to a few of the websites & they all stated their peanut butter was safe.  I suggest doing the same before purchasing any new jars of peanut butter.

When I left the U.S. in 1973 for a tour of duty in Italy, folks slow-danced, holding one another closely.

When I returned to the U.S. in 1977, folks weren't touching at all when they danced...and dancing had become an endurance event.

Hmmm...

Sounds like someone needs a Chocolatine and/or Morning Bun from La Farine.

Someone GOT a Chocolatine from La Farine!!  Also, he got a ham and cheese puff pastry that was "to die for."  The pastry is history.  I went next door to Peet's and got a particularly strong large latte.

The latte is currently working on the puff pastry...the chocolatine can wait.

So...

-One can describe which "pretty cupcake/fat-inducing/heart-attack-causing sugary treats" they are eating, but they just shouldn't post pics of them?

-Does "latte + puff pastry = POOH"?  If so, I look forward to the resultant pictures.  ;D  ::)

Thank you DDIL Ann for the kind words.  Last night's audience was with us from the start.  A wonderful crowd.  Ole!  Our leading lady Sharry, who BK, Jose, and Michael Shayne met at WHAT IF?, was very sick last night.  Still she gave a wonderful performance.

I changed the color. Pink is hard to read

I think one of the things I like least about HainesHisWay,  lately, is this  tendency on the part of others to correct someone's spelling or word usage.  Now we can  add to that "color" usage.

I suggest folks use the colors and words THEY wish to...and  others might reconsider their tendencies to "correct".  It comes off rather badly, in translation,I think.

I chose pink for my Valentine's Dayt greeting because I wanted it to be pink.  I had a blue background.  The red looked crass to me.

If it's hard to read, do one of YOUR OWN rather than correcting mine and calling attention to it.

I took it as a slap....and I did not appreciate it one bit.

I was up early, and at the store by six AM.  When I arrived, there was already a customer, waiting for the store to open.

From six to seven, there was a regular stream of customers, all male.

And it stayed like for the rest of the day, plus the usual customers.

A steady stream of men.

A steady stream of heterosexual men.

A steady stream of poor, poor, pussywhipped heterosexual men.

In fact, the stream was building in momentum as the morning came to a close.

Very few of the men were smiling, by the way.  Many of them looked downright grim.

Gina, who runs the Florist's department, is going to have phenomenal sales once again this year.

There were a few women buying flowers and other gifties, but not nearly as much as the men, and they usually had their girlfriends with them.

Occasionally, there was the guessably gay fellow getting something for his sweetie.

There were no straight women getting gifties for their fellows, as far as I could tell.

Nope, for the most part Valentine's Day is men giving gifties to their ladies fair, but not vice versa.

At least, gifties that involve spending money.

And that is the supermarket report for today.

It is not where your peanut butter is made, Jennifer, that you have to worry about.  The problem is where they purchased the peanuts to make the butter.

I read the list DR Jane posted for Canada. I did not recognized 90% of the brands. And the ones i did recognize i don't buy.

There hasn't been much news of the recalls here. It doesn't seem like they are recalling any main brands.

I tried to go to the mall and do some errands.  As soon as I got outside and headed toward town I realized that I have a headache a bit of a sore throat and am a little dizzy.  I started to feel a cold coming on last night, but was hoping it wouldn't really happen.

So, I went to the grocery store - where I saw a number of men and women buying the $9.99 per dozen roses - and got my weekend supplies.  MAN has steak gone up in price.  I was going to make a nice steak dinner, but not for these prices.  Anyway, after getting groceries and a quick trip to Petco, I am in for the weekend.  I did bring home the work I want to do and the info I need to do my taxes, so I may do that here at home.

What a doll!! I'm so glad kitty has found humans who will take care of her

I'm glad too.  And I'm really glad that both Faith and Jim realized that it would be impractical and totally unfair to Kitty if they had decided to keep Kitty here.  All of us here have very non-regular schedules, and it would have been nearly impossible to make sure that Kitty got fed regularly and was given the attention and petting and cuddling that he deserves.

They're also still trying to figure out if Kitty was a real stray or if someone just abandoned Kitty.  Kitty seemed very clean (healthy paw pads, etc.) and well-behaved, and responded to "Come here", "Don't go there", "Go outside".  But Kitty was not spayed - that will happen next week. So... ???  But there have been no signs up in the neighborhood about a missing cat - well, at least one matching Kitty's description.  And Faith also checked craiglist over the past week and a half looking for notices.

It's not the gaining of weight...it's rubbing folks' nose in things they might be trying to avoid.

It's called "common courtesy" or "respect" for folks trying to eliminate a lifetime of bad habits and impulse eating.

For Valentine's I took myself to Star India for lunch after my grocery shopping. It was yummy, and I read the latest issue of FILMFARE magazine while I ate.

Dog Bosco and Freddy got me several vintage Bollywood movie press books which I have enjoyed adding to my collection. That was sweet of them.

Now I need a nap.

Hey, I like seeing sugar laden and fattening. I don't gain weight by looking at them.

Oh, have I mentioned I'm now half way to my goal. I've lost 35 pounds!

Here part of those pounds are...probably all derived from sugary treats:

I think many of mine were from lots of meat and potatoes and butter and sour cream and.....

I think this is a little like a spoiler, if you don't want to look at the photos, don't look at them.  DR Jose is truly a gifted food photographer and I truly enjoy looking at the composition of the photos.  I'm not trying to be snarky about it, but I'd really miss seeing the photos

Looking a photos of delicous treats will not bother me while I am trying to lose a few pounds.

However looking at photos of pooh will make me vomit on the ground.

Hey, I like seeing sugar laden and fattening. I don't gain weight by looking at them.

Exactly!

It's not the gaining of weight...it's rubbing folks' nose in things they might be trying to avoid.

It's called "common courtesy" or "respect" for folks trying to eliminate a lifetime of bad habits and impulse eating.

But DO  continue to "enable" and "facilitate" with all that free time you have to visit all those bakeries.

Don't forget the burger joints, the hot dog stands, the candy stores, the street carts...

Speaking for myself - With the very recent health scares and concerns that both of my parents have been dealing with, I am very aware of the pitfalls of some of the foods I eat and enjoy.  But just because I take a picture of a macaron, Levain cookie or a cupcake from Magnolia, does not necessarily mean I've eaten said treat.  Or eaten them on the day I posted the picture.  -BK mentioned cupcakes the other day, and I just happened to have taken a pic of cupcakes a few months ago... -FYI - There were four cupcakes in that picture, in that box - one was for me, and the remainder were for my roommates.

I know I have a tendency to indulge.  However, I've made a very conscious effort over the past year to make sure I balance that out with additional physical activity.  Do I go to the gym regularly? No.  However, I usually walk anywhere from four to eight miles a day.  I do eat and enjoy "healthy food" too.  I just tend not to take pictures of those items.  In fact, I lost 15 pounds and two inches off my waist last year in spite of and despite my Enabling.

Food is primarily nourishment - it's what keeps us alive.  Food should also taste good. Food should be savored and enjoyed - whether it's meat, fish, vegetable, fruit, flour-based, sugar-sweetened or cream-laden.  If pictures and descriptions of food are making you "uncomfortable", well...

Put down the Morning Bun and the Chocolatine!

There are a lot of good appliances you can get for less than $7000
Yes, if you want a Happy Days kitchen. If you want a professional high-powered 6@ 14" burner cook top with the necessary 1200cpm venting system and a pair of 30" bake/convection ovens, freezer, refrigerator and dishwasher - the tab goes up! And when you are preparing a holiday feast for 14 you are happy to have six burners and two ovens.

Does anyone know of a possible source if I need to handle this myself?

We get the new upgrade every year, DR elmore3003.  But the software is registered and can't be re-installed on another machine.

I know this probably further aligns me with the luddites, but I hate, hate, hate Finale.  It is the most non-intuitive music notation program I have ever encountered.  For everyday SATB charts I still use Encore.  So sue me.

I have no choice because it's the program everyone who's anyone uses in the NY theatre and it's program we're using on the Kern-Herbert project.

I also spent the rest of the afternoon watching the rest of the bonus features on the SHADOWS DVD. One feature called "restoration comparison" was a bit of a misnomer. It was actually a documentary on how UCLA restored the film from the horrifying shambles it was in so that it could be watched. Only 11 1/2 minutes long, but every second of it was really fascinating.

Thanks for the info DR Jane. I will take a look at it. Although the peanut butter i buy is made in canada.

The contaminated "peanut product" is mainly used by food processors (cookies, candy, etc.) and also packaged in bulk for institutional users - hospitals, schools, prisons, hotel kitchens, etc.)

der Brucer

My Mother used to pick-up some extra bucks working for a local "snack" distributor. She would sit in the back room of a store front moving peanut butter from 5 gallon "buckets" onto a variety of crackers and then rolling the finished product in cellophane and sealing the packages on a hot plate. I had to check in every day after school before I went about my business. It was piece work - so Mom could run home and check on a simmering pot roast if she wanted. When Mom combined her cracker earnings with my delivery boy/gardening funds, we had enough to pay for a two week family vacation in Sarasota Florida.

It was sort of a "Farewell Kitty" pic.  Faith had been trying to find a shelter that would take Kitty, but it turned out that her boyfriend - who lives in Brooklyn - decided to keep and take care of Kitty.  -Which would allow Faith to keep seeing Kitty.  ;)

Sweet photo with a happy ending :)

Last night on the news they reported that home values here increased 5% over the past year and foreclosures are at the lowest in 5 years. I was on the phone about this with Ron Raines; I doubt McGlinn had a will or an executor and I wonder if any of his family who end up cleaning out his mess will know what to do with all of his "borrowed" items and return them to the proper places, like the original scores for NO NO NANETTE, or the stuff he was supposed to send to the Library of Congress when they bought his collection and found a lot of what he supposedly sent wasn't sent.

I seldom -- SELDOM -- have a morning bun OR a chocolatine.  Do remember that it was YOU who brought them up, not me.

I love it when we have pictures of favorite foods.

But when one person posts cupcake photos, does it then require several people doing it,  too?

What is cute the first time one reads or sees it becomes VERY tired the 4th,  6th or 7th time it's repeated.

Interesting story, and sweet you combined your part time earning for a vacation.

And mine was the larger portion.  This blue-eyed bond-headed pre-teen could charm the bucks right out of the old ladies purses; just sit and be interested in tales about "when I was young". Actually, it wasn't hard to "be interested". A lot of the stories were about life in late nineteenth century rural America, and other's were tales on immigrating from Europe or Russia. (And the scrap book pictures were amazing!)

Back from the Hollywood Show.  Yes that's the new name because after all these years, Ray Courts has sold the show to someone else.  I don't know how much they paid him or what the deal is, but he's on for the next two years as a "consultant."  I will say that today's show was pretty jammed - all you need is Tony Curtis, Debbie Reynolds, Malcolm MacDowell and a few more heavyweights.  But the thing that really did it, I have to tell you, is Joan Collins.  For the first time ever, they put her in another room all by herself, and for the first time ever you have to pay to even get IN the room - that's on top of the twenty bucks to get into the show AND whatever she's charging for her pix and autograph.  And yes, huge lines for her, MacDowell, Curtis (who looks TERRIBLE and is in a wheel chair), Debbie, and Debbie's daughter, Carrie Fisher, who doesn't even resemble what she used to look like.

It was very hard to see who was there, because there were people everywhere, but I spied usual suspects such as Dwayne Hickman, Warren Berlinger, Jon Provost, but also newer folks like Yaphet Kotto and Bruce Davison.  People seemed to be spending a LOT of money, too.  I also saw our very own Druxy.  Grant and I had a good time - he bought one magazine for $5.00.   There were more dealers, too.  I did hear the ominous rumblings that the new owners will try to bring in a younger crowd - I do hope that doesn't mean they'll only want current people signing - that would be the kiss of death for this show.  But, if they can get the kind of lineup they had today - well, they'll be back on their feet, I think.

Grant and I went to the Daily Grill next door to the show - I had the salad wedge - they've changed the way they do it - it used to be a wedge with bleu cheese crumbles, bacon, diced tomatoes, and a very good and light vinaigrette.  The latter has been replaced by a creamy bleu cheese dressing.  But they were kind enough to do it the old way for me.

The Jim that's in Jose's photos with the kitty is the very same Jim who, along with the wonderful people at his company, is responsible for the visual aspects of the videos I've been posting on youtube and linking here, like the "Fish" parody with its fabulous and inventive photo selections and timing.

Definitely not disco, but here are a couple of the most recent ones, which I don't think I've linked here before.  These two are wedding-related, one a "traditional" ceremony song as written in the show it was written for, the other a same-sex ceremony song:

"I Look Into Those Eyes"  - In the show, it's a ballad in which the character celebrates being accepted into a new family.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HcENPH12UU

"A Perfect Day" - same-sex wedding vows - vocals on the demo are performed by Janie Smulyan and Maureen Silliman

When I saw Druxy, his whole aisle was fairly empty, but I'm sure that changed as the day went by.  His ever-lovin' Sandy was with him.  I honestly don't know if I'll have time to get there tomorrow.  I wouldn't be able to be there before three-thirty, and I know that on Sunday a lot of people pack up early if it's not busy - and do I need to spend another twenty bucks to hang out for an hour - I would like to say hey to Linda Purl and my pal Nick will be there so I'd get to meet Malcolm MacDowell, but, you know, I'm thinking not.

Finished watching the Bollywood movie I started last weekend, MISSION ISTANBUL (2008), an action film with the heros fighting a terrorist cell.

Every action film cliche ever is in this film and it was driving me crazy. Although I do think Nikitin Dheer might be a new favorite actor.

And there were a couple of amusing scenes featuring an actor playing George W. Bush not knowing where/what Turkey (the country) is, and that the US can't attack India because we would lose all the call centers and our economy would collapse. I guess India is not too fond of GWB.

Did you know that the title song for that film, written by Paul Francis Webster and Sammy Fain, was almost thrown out of the picture?

No major recording artist wanted to record it.  Not Tony Martin.  Not Doris Day.  Not Nat "King" Cole.  Nobody!

Finally, Fox got The Four Aces to record it, but in order to do that, they had to cover the cost of an entire album.

Of course, the tune went on to win the Oscar and become one of the greatest love songs of all time.

Good Evening!

I'm back from Chinatown which was quite crowded and busy, surprisingly so.  -Although, I chatted briefly with a friend before his show tonight, and he said that Times Square was filled to the brim with tourists. "Recession? What recession?"

I did not end up having dumplings for dinner.  Instead I had an amazingly delicious Vietnamese sandwich, banh mi. It was my first time checking out Banh Mi Saigon (http://www.yelp.com/biz/banh-mi-saigon-new-york), and I'm sure it won't be my last.  The sandwich was very good, but the most interesting part of the dining experience was sitting down on the makeshift table-seats and "making friends" with my fellow diners - very close quarters.  Oh, and the sandwich counter is in the back of a jewelry store!

For dessert, I tried to search out the famed "Tofu Man", but he did not seem to be out on the streets tonight.  However, I believe I found his wife's store.  For an amazingly reasonable $1.50 she ladled me out some fresh, still warm, tofu - Dou Hua - from a huge stock pot into a quart container, and then placed two small containers of ginger-infused simple syrup into the bag.  I then hightailed it to the nearest park bench, opened the container, splashed some ginger syrup on top, and... :)  I just hope my leftovers are even half as good tomorrow.

Next I watched SAVE ME, a film about an ex-gay organization in New Mexico. It's a fictional film with super performances by Chad Allen, Robert Gant and especially Judith Light. Stephen Lang is also in it. It's not a hysterical film about the subject, but rather a more reasoned and quiet look at one such organization. The Allen-Gant pairing showed some early chemistry but by the end, it seemed more tentative and I wasn't quite buying it. Still, a very enjoyable movie.

believe all reports on McGlinn's death have stemmed from the original emails I sent out to everyone I could think of whose email I had and who had worked with him, been burned by him, or knew him between 1984 and 2002.  I also poasted it on the Cast Recording List so the news would travel fast from all that.

He was found dead in his apartment and it's believed he was dead 3 or 4 days.  The detective in the apartment must have used his address book to call Russell Warner and others looking for a next of kin.

The detective told my friends he called that he suspected heart attack, but nothing would be certain till the coroner's report. Around 6:20, Kim Criswell called me from London, and she believes, since she spoke to him last month, it was a suicide. DR Ben arrived while I was on the phone with her.

After that, DR Ben and I went to Artie's for dinner, came back and watched the Bristol Old Vic production of Sheridan's THE RIVALS, a complete delight. It was a very lovely evening and nice to have a laugh after the shock of McGlinn's death.

I went to Broadwayworld.com and Allthatchat and posted correctionsto a lot of the errors: one post said he died in London and someone put a whole article that could be better on wikipedia. Also, he did not die on 2/14/09.

The weirdest thing is that I had two friends named john, one McGlinn and one Schneidler, both dead now, whose birthdays were Sept. 18 and 20. My birthday is Sept 19.

I just borrow them and return them.

Are you charged a fine if they are overdue?

I had a wonderful evening at Chez Moore. Artie's is a great place for dinner and the waitress just let us gab and gab. Mushroom Barley soup and cheese blintzes. Yummy!

Watching "SNL"...

Alec Baldwin as a "CouGay": :)

The Jonas Brothers: ??? I swear I can't understand a single word that they are "singing".  -And I wonder if "America" knows that most of the instrumental sound they are hearing is coming from their "backup band".  ::)

It was great seeing a solid production of The Rivals. I read the play in college and did scenes from it in various classes. I also used a piece for auditions early in my "career". This was a well cast and all around well done production.

Next up on our "Classical" Theatre agenda, She Stoops to Conquer.

Oh, yes, I forgot, after Artie's, at Intermission of The Rivals, there was pecan pie from Magnolia Bakery and Hagen Daz ice cream. Mmm, mmm, mmm.

When I left I walked to 79th Street and got on the downtown train which was just pulling into the station as I swiped through the turnstile. It was a crowded train. What are all these people doing out on a Saturday night ;)

I got home in a very short while and now I'm up past my bedtime because I had pecan pie, ice cream and Constant Comment tea.

I suspect the the lead-singer Jonas brother - Joe? - will be branching off to a solo career.  -His two brothers are growing out of their "cute phase".

Finished with my viewing.  A peculiar Valentine's Day, but, you know, it is what it is.  I'm listening to CDs now.  I went to Staples to Xerox the new Nudie script so I could proof a hard copy before Xeroxing 15 copies for Wednesday, but apparently they close early on Saturdays (I was there at seven-thirty).  The good news is that I'm laying down the demo tracks on Tuesday and we'll do the vocals on Friday.

Happy Valentine's Day to all at HainesHisWay.com

It was not meant to be that. I apologize, I was just trying to be helpful. Believe me Mr. Pullium there was no bad intention on my part and I hope you can see that.

I made the mistake of switching to TCM and finding LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING.....one of my favorite romantic/tragic movies.....

And such beautiful music...and lovely CinemaScope photography....

Of course, the tune went on to win the Oscar and become one of the greatest love songs of all time.

but didn't Frank Sinatra sing it in the film uncredited?

I only met Mr. McGlinn once - had lunch with him at some restaurant on Broadway on the Upper West Side.  He wanted to talk about us doing a project together - I told him quite honestly that I didn't think he'd be happy with a hands on producer who was involved in every aspect of a project.  I think he knew I was right.

I, of course, knew nothing about Mr. McGlinn personally (except DR Elmore's bits and pieces the bulk of which are being saved for his memoirs). But I do know that his CDs of SHOW BOAT and BRIGADOON are often played and hugely enjoyed.

I think the SHOWBOAT and the BRIGADOON are the best things he recorded.

If I may I would like to add

Anything Goes (Original Broadway version with dropped songs)
Kiss Me Kate (Complete recording although I am not crazy about all the singers on it)
Annie Get Your Gun (Original Broadway version with Kim Criswell)
Sitting Pretty (A great studio cast Judy Blazer, Davis Gaines, Jason Graae, Paige O'Hara, Roberta Peters, Paula Laurence,  Beverly Lambert)

He made an attempt to record original complete scores that had never been done before

add: Broadway Showstoppers

However his big mistakes were

Lambert Wilson's musical album
Kiri Sings Gershwin (Kiri Te Kanawa)
Cole: Night and Day (Thomas Hampson)
My Funny Valentine (Von Staade)

Classic artist doing Broadway never did anything for me. Although Mr. lambert was not a classical artist.

I can reveal now that he was indeed the Fat Conductor of Limited Talent and Limitless Ego. This is not the place or time to be his critic and I, as one who worked with him for nearly 20 years, am most likely his largest critic. I think his SHOW BOAT is a great achievement, but I'm also aware of his failings as scholar, researcher, musician and friend. I believe I am most saddened by the fact that the breach in our friendship is now irreparable and that his inner demons, of which there were many ugly ones, prevented him from having the helluva career his ego craved and the financial security his extravagance required.

Danny Burstein just emailed me and I know he and Rebecca are very sad, as are many of the talented performers John worked with.

I'm back from seeing our very own TCB and my friend Josh in Glorious!  In a word:  delightful!  Sharry O'Hare played Florence and Tom played her boyfriend, St Clair (that's his name).  Josh played Cosme (that's how it's spelled...it's pronounced COZ-may), Florence's accompanist.  And he really played the piano.  Everyone was very good.  The house was more than three-quarters full and everyone seemed to have a great time.  If I hadn't been able to usher and see the show for free, I definitely would not have minding paying for a ticket! ;D

Hi, Larry!

Hey, George! Do they mention in the play that Cosme McMoon later ran a gay whorehouse?

I can't sleep and I keep getting emails from folk who worked with John. I just heard from the wonderful and adorable Donna Lynne Champlin; her first job in New York, I think, was the lead in McGlinn's VERY WARM FOR MAY at Carnegie Recital Hall. I've had a couple of mails from George Dvorsky, Danny Burstein, Jeanne Lehman. Ron Raines . . .

No, the show ends when Florence dies.  They don't hide the fact (to the audience) that Cosme is gay, although Florence never suspects...or it's not in the show that she knows.
