Title: THE DAMN NOTES
Post by: bk on February 15, 2009, 12:32:10 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were damn notes, and now it is time for you to post until the damn cows come home - they're currently starring in a production of Damn Yankees.

And a happy haineshisway.com birthday to former dear reader steveg.  And to Geof, whoever that is.  I can now pretty much see that the sender of the PM that was forwarded to me will now also be a former dear reader.  Very sad indeed, and I happen to know for a fact that this person hasn't even had the courtesy to even open the PM I sent explaining how I felt about it (it was a very even-keeled PM - nothing bad in it).  And life goes on here at haineshisway.com - as it always does.  And I think we can thank something that happened long ago for planting the specious seeds that poisoned several dear readers against both me and the site.  We shall never forget said specious seeds EVER.

BK, it's possible that this person has actually read the message.  When one sends a PM, an e-mail with the message is also sent to the recipient if said recipient has his or her e-mail address in his or her profile.  So one does not have to actually log into HHW to read the PMs.

Did you know that the title song for that film, written by Paul Francis Webster and Sammy Fain, was almost thrown out of the picture?

No major recording artist wanted to record it.  Not Tony Martin.  Not Doris Day.  Not Nat "King" Cole.  Nobody!

Finally, Fox got The Four Aces to record it, but in order to do that, they had to cover the cost of an entire album.

Of course, the tune went on to win the Oscar and become one of the greatest love songs of all time.
_________________________________________________ _________________________________________

but didn't Frank Sinatra sing it in the film uncredited?

No, its lyric was introduced in the film by the 20th Century-Fox chorus at the end of the film.

Sinatra sang "Three Coins in the Fountain", uncredited, the year before, but it was The Four Aces who made a commercial hit with it first.

I know that Fox introduced the song prior to the film's release by getting it out to radio stations and the fact that it was recorded by The Four Aces instead of a single artist may be where this allegation about no one wanting to record it came from.

I would imagine the reverse is more likely true.  Since The Four Aces had scored so big with "Three Coins...", it would have been strange for Fox to have had any reservations about the song or that the studio would have gone with anyone else.  The Four Aces were huge in the early 1950s and made hits of songs like "Secret Love" and "Mr. Sandman."   With the previous year's mega-hit "Three Coins in the Fountain" and the succeeding year's "Love is a Many-Splendored Thing" and the title tune to Fox's "(It's A) Woman's World,"  Fox and The Four Aces were HUGE on the radio waves.

Also, at the time the song began playing on radio, it had already been integrated into Alfred Newman's score because he felt it set the right tone throughout the film.  It would have taken a serious misfire during  previews for the song to have been taken out.

Has any program drama, comedy or music program won six emmys for best program?

Bonnie, Buster, Mikey and Fletcher are surprisingly calm this morning.

What is surprising is that they are calm while we are out of doggy kibble.

Good Morning. I am waiting for an exterminator that seems to have decided not to come this morning. We have a once a month service and it seems very spotty. He wasn't here two months ago. Last month he was early and this month he seems not to have shown up again.

Oh, well. I will now eat my breakfast. I put it off because I didn't want to be interrupted by a buy sprayer. Too bad for him.

I don't have to go to work tomorrow!!! Hooray!!!

All the rain we were supposed to get yesterday was something of a pipe dream. We got .06 inches and that's all! It was basically clear by 10 a.m. Today is partly cloudy, but it doesn't appear that there will be any rain. Highs in the low 50s.

You said you saw Glorious! last night. I assume it is about Florence Foster Jenkins.

Is this the same play Souvenir under another name or different play?

I saw Souvenir with Judy Kaye on Broadway and there was no mention of the gay whorehouse.

My favorite moment is actually at the end of the play is when Cosmo muses what Florences heard in head when she sang. Judy Kaye then sang a beautiful rendition of Ava Maria

SOUVENIR and GLORIOUS! are two different plays about Mrs Jenkins. The info on Cosme McMoon's later career as a brothel keep is in one of the CDs of Florence Foster Jenkins.

GLORIOUS is a different show than SOUVENIR, although both shows are about Florence Foster Jenkins.  GLORIOUS originally played in London and then toured in Canada.  Whereas SOUVENIR is more of a musical, GLORIOUS is a comedy, although the lead does sing three numbers during the course of the play.  No mention is made in the play about Cosme's gay whorehouse, although we did discuss it at the start of rehearsals.  As George mentioned, Cosme's sexuality is an accepted part of the play.

One obviously cannot argue with one of the writers.   Whatever the case about what the studio might have done, it all worked out extremely well in the end.  And my facts above are correct about the success of The Four Aces and those songs.  After "Three Coins...", it should not have been hard to accept when the group was offered "Love is a Many-Splendored Thing."  If audiences adored it upon first hearing, one might presume a singing group would recognize its considerable value.

I feel like doing nothing but snuggling up on the couch with Cat Freddy and watching movies....right now I have SOUTH PACIFIC in the dvd player. I have not seen this film all the way through since I was a kid. It was never a favorite of mine. I always preferred musicals that took place in the city, rather then in the jungles...but this film does have it good points, and I image that Josh Logan had a lot of fun casting it  8)

Still, Ray Walston makes my skin crawl every time he is in a scene.

This DVD is not anamorphic. There must be a newer release that is.

Sucking on a Coldeez and sipping some hot EmergenC.  Sippin' and Suckin' - isn't that a Bacharach and David song?

Huggin' and Chalkin' is a Johnny Mercer song...

...and I happen to know for a fact that this person hasn't even had the courtesy to even open the PM I sent explaining how I felt about it (it was a very even-keeled PM - nothing bad in it).

BK, it's possible that this person has actually read the message.  When one sends a PM, an e-mail with the message is also sent to the recipient if said recipient has his or her e-mail address in his or her profile.  So one does not have to actually log into HHW to read the PMs.

I don't, other people do.  It must be how it is set up.  I guess Keith fixed it so I could.  Good thing too or I would miss at least half of my PMs.

Mike:  A splendid 2-disc edition was issued in October 2007...it has the cut version of the film, which is what I presume you are watching (it was cut shortly after its roadshow premier to facilitate more showings each day) and the "roadshow" version.  Some of the footage restored to the roadshow version was not color-corrected and can be a bit disconcerting at first, but it's a far superior experience than the version we had been getting all those years before.  And Walston's performance is more fully palatable in this longer version....in the cut version he's all ham...over-the-top in all respects.  In the roadshow version he seems like a wholly different character.

I am up; it is freezing, and I had to take Sugar out to do her thing.  Lovely having her here, but I'll admit, the days when I cold just open the door and let her out loose in her own big fenced yard were easier on cold mornings.  She is cutely curled on the couch now.  And yes, walking 20 miles in the snow so she can pee is worth it.   Thank God we live in the desert!

Freezing! Oh, Mary, get off my dress :)

You're from Arizona. Freezing to you is 65 degrees ;)

It was no more than 52 degrees, but i think it was actually officially 47 degrees at the time.

You know I was kidding, right? I'll give you 47. You can't just run out with the dog in sweatpants and a t-shirt. Even if she just stands on the porch and pees.

Recording Session #1 of 3 today went very well. It was just me, the Actor/Singer and the recording engineer. I was just asked to supervise the vocal sessions since the instrumental tracks were already recorded. The engineer was very "smart" and started recording the "scratch vocal" during the first run-through. After that we just had to punch in a few spots and we recorded some alternate takes too for some sections.  We ended up finishing ten minutes early which gave the actor plenty of time to rest up before his matinée. *Which was doubly good since his show opens this week, and they're in the middle of press performances.

DR Michael S - Post-mortem criticisms should be reserved for those who actually worked with and knew the deceased. To point out someone's "failures" which, in this case, are just your opinions, is just simply crass - especially since there has yet to be an official pronouncement of his death. A shared handshake does not make one a friend or even an acquaintance.

Regardless of what sort of personal "dirt" you may have heard from another source or two, someone's passing should still require a degree of respect and reserve for not only the deceased but also the deceased's family, friends and "inner circle".

No one is perfect.

So far the only thing about SOUTH PACIFIC I like are the brief glimpses of Ken Clark and some guy who somebody on IMDB has confused with Ed Fury, and watching Mr. Brazzi, who I would marry in a minute.

After an hour I went and tried to nap, but never fell asleep. Now I just can't bring myself to wander to the couch to watch more.

I think I will shower and take Bosco for a walk instead.

The thought of seeing even more of Ray Walston on the roadshow version is making me sort of queasy.

Hmmm...but is there more Ken Clark in that version (his singing  voice supplied by Tony the Tiger, BTW).

I also am liking Floyd Simmons as Cmdr. Harbison. If he hadn't passed away last year I would by trying to interview him.

Sinatra sang -- with no screen credit -- the title song to "Three Coins in the Fountain" over the film's main titles.

I know how upset you are.  I'm just saying you may have come to conclusions too quickly, and have stating them they will come true.  Not everyone reads PM's right away, or even sees them.  It depends how they are set up.  Mine come directly to our main email address.  I have considered changing it to a different address.  I haven't because I might not see them for a day or two.  Actually I have had that happen with my main email as well.  I gather you didn't have this person's email address to write them directly instead of using a PM.  Even so I would have given this person a couple of days, time to receive & time to think about a response.  Not knowing the details, nor am I asking for them, I'm not sure what sort of response a person could make.

I began my afternoon watching DAMAGES, and another mind-blowing twist and turn scenario it was once again. Thank goodness this only runs a half-season. I'd be crazy trying to keep all the maneuvers backward and forward in time straight. In its own way, it's more convoluted than LOST since there are many fewer characters and a time line much more concentrated than LOST's.

Next, I started on my work project for the day: OUT AT THE WEDDING. It's a screwball romantic comedy: one little lie snowballing into incredible complications for all concerned.

While there were some adequate performances and some of it was kind of cute (gay man finds different ways to help his boy friend lose weight without his knowing), the story is SO contrived, and the lies begin to pile up into such a towering mountain of falsehoods that it collapses under the weight of them. And when all the people who have been lied to show up at the door of the main person who's been lying, well, it just insults the intelligence.

I finished watching SOUTH PACIFIC, and I must say that tha last hour and a half was much better then the first hour, for me. I was not expecting to get emotional at the end of the film and was reduced to  slobbering, teary eyed goof by the final scene.

If I could find my own Rosanno Brazzi I would consider giving up bachelorhood.

And it was fun to see some actors I know like John Gabriel, Richard Harrison, and Linc Foster....and some in the cast were models from those 1950s beefcake magazines...not that I would have recognized any of them or anything.

I spent my afternoon listening to some McGlinn recordings - KISS ME KATE, BRIGADOON, and ANYTHING GOES - speaking to friends and McGlinn family members and sleepwalking about the apartment. I suspect that in about another two hours or less I will be out like a light for the rest of the evening.

Right now I'm so tired that it's hard to focus, so I guess I'll contemplate some dinner and organize tomorrow.

I just got home from the Hollywood Collector's Show.

Had a great day.  Did twice the sales that I did yesterday, which is very unusual for a Sunday.

Joan Collins did not get her own room today.  She was out where Carrie Fisher was yesterday.

Today's "Special Attractions" were Nancy Olson, who looks terrific, and Bobby Sherman, who came wearing his police uniform.

Hank Garrett, who was next to me, told a very funny story about Mel Brooks' directing the original movie version of THE PRODUCERS.  According to Hank, when Mel gave directions to Zero Mostel, it was all in Yiddish.  None of the rest of the cast could understand what they were saying to each other.

I guess without the character who was Tallis' lover, they didn't care to keep him around. There's also no historical evidence, as I recall, that Tallis was actually gay. I believe he was married and had a family. They have a new gay couple the second season!

Freezing! Oh, Mary, get off my dress :)

It was no more than 52 degrees, but i think it was actually officially 47 degrees at the time.

Sucking on a Coldeez and sipping some hot EmergenC.  Sippin' and Suckin' - isn't that a Bacharach and David song?

Huggin' and Chalkin' is a Johnny Mercer song...

I love his song "If You've Never Had a College Education" from "College Rhythm"  (where they used the Hotel Set from "Gay Divorcee" as the college.  It warped me for years thinking of all these great deco collleges with glass block, revolving doors and bakelite floors!

I spent part of the afternoon at a Winter Carnival with my mom and my niece. Oy!

It was packed. And i carried this sled around and my niece would not sit on it. All the other kids were being pulled by their parents. But she would not sit on it.

Nor would she go on the horse drawn carriage ride.  Nor the inflatable play areas they had set up.

I was surprised that there was a skating rink set up before the inflatable rides. And one had to cross ON THE SKATING RINK to get to the rides. That was scary! My mom would not even attempt it.

In fact the whole park was full of ice. But they poured gravel over it. So it was very walkable.

The only things my niece would do were: taffy on the snow. Which she loved. And playing in the park. Surprisingly the swings and slides were still functioning. And a lot of kids were playing there.

Then after when we were leaving she decided she would like to try the tobogan. I had asked her to try it when we arrived (because you don't always know what you like until you try it). Anyhow she decided she loved it and it was great. So i had to pull her all the way back to the car. The whole excurstion was tiring!

Good Evening!

The recording sessions went well.  I think. I hope.  Again, I was just asked to come in and plunk some notes and basically lend another set of ears once we started recording.  Thankfully, the recording engineer was really on top of things, and was able to fix a couple of "spots" right then and there.  -Gotta love that digital technology!  Of course, as I kept listening to the takes, I started hearing other "spots".  After everyone had finished their takes, I went ahead and left - I really could not and did not want to "think" anymore.  But one of the writers stayed behind to go back through the takes with the engineer for the almost-final mix-down.  Thankfully(?), they just needed a basic track for tomorrow, and still have two months for any other post-production that may or may not be needed.

In any case... I had to walk around Chelsea for a while just to decompress my brain before hopping on the train back uptown.  Whew!

Agreed!  -Which is one of the reasons I watch "Top Chef" at 10:00pm instead of "Damages".  Having to keep track of all the twists and turns back-to-back with "Lost" would give me a headache.

So... A "half season"?  Does that mean they'll be splitting the season in two? Or that this season is just a short season - with the mystery - well, at least one of them - solved in a couple more weeks?

Now time to watch DARLING with Miss Julie Christie, Mr Dirk Bogarde, AND Mr Laurence Harvey.

I hope MR BK has decided to watch SUSAN SLADE from the Troy Donahue Box.

No I simply meant that it only does half the number of episodes that a regular network series does. 13 instead of 22-24.

DR MattH - Are you watching those four-minute wrap-ups of "Damages" that FX seems to be running at semi-random times?  We noticed that our DVR picked them up, and they're actually a very good refresher before viewing the new episode.

No, I didn't know they were doing these.

I started my evening of viewing watching Alice Faye, John Payne, Jack Oakie, and Cesar Romero in THE GREAT AMERICAN BROADCAST. I loved the score, and John Payne has never looked dreamier. I had never seen this before, and it was very enjoyable. (Well, except for the Wiere Brothers who wear out their welcome very fast with me.)

Jane, don't be confused - on Saturday it had been two days, now it's three.

Finished watching Susan Slade around seven.  David had sent me the script back with some final little tweaks and grammar fixes, which I spent almost two hours entering into our master script.  That's done - he'll call me when he gets home tonight and we'll go over a couple of other little notes he wanted to talk about - I think we can do those in about ten minutes, then I'll Xerox the script tomorrow, so I can highlight everyone's parts on Tuesday and Wednesday.

I also watched the making of documentary on the DVD. Among the participants was the multi-talented Dr. Drew Casper. Always a delight to see him. Michael Fienstein and Miles Kreuger were also around to make comments.

I watched last week's THE OFFICE. A funny, endearing episode.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. I didn't like a single one of the plotlines tonight. Unusual for me not to like any of them but I didn't.

I did enjoy BROTHERS & SISTERS. The Ryan storyline was really touching and involving. Looks like Ken Olin is going to rejoin the company.

I was not putting him down or his failures. I do not think they were failures.

I do not know any "personal dirt" about him.

RE: The recordings
I do not like opera singers doing broadway (not just his but West Side Story, South Pacific etc etc) and that was three out of 19 other albums I have conducted by Mr. McGlinn. I think he did a great service by recording the albums he did. he helped preserve many great scores that over the years have been changed, reimagined etc by others and were a disservice to the scores.  Whatever may have been said about has not colored my opinion of his work. He left behind an important body of work.

AND LET'S PUT AN END TO THIS.
I WILL NOT TALK ABOUT THIS ANYMORE.

DtM-  Re crying unexpectedly, I did not expect to cry while watching UNDERDOG (the movie), and I did.

Perhaps UNDERDOG is one of those movies that plays better on the small screen, like [ducking before saying this] BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES.

Sweet Polly Purebred sat in the grass
Turned her eyes heavenward sighing
Where oh where has my Underdog gone
He's gone far yon
To Canterbury

'Tis a bow-wow-piddle-dog-day
'Tis a bow-wow-kibble-dog-dee

(almost a Sweeney Todd reference, the song by Beagle Bamford)

Finished final notes on Nudie, and I'll proof one last time tomorrow.  Listening to Anya right now - I must say it sounds very good.  One confusing thing that I'll have to point out in the booklet because some anal twit on castrecl will cry foul is that the album jacket song list has two songs listed that aren't actually on the album.  If you look at the label copy on the LP they're not there - there are seventeen tracks - but in the song list it's nineteen tracks - go know.

DR George

You said you saw Glorious! last night. I assume it is about Florence Foster Jenkins.

Is this the same play Souvenir under another name or different play?

I saw Souvenir with Judy Kaye on Broadway and there was no mention of the gay whorehouse.

My favorite moment is actually at the end of the play is when Cosmo muses what Florences heard in head when she sang. Judy Kaye then sang a beautiful rendition of Ava Maria

Yes, that's what it was...and this play has Cosme and the same moment at the end, except that she doesn't sing anything at all.  I asked Josh about it and he said something about the author having a specific reason for not having her sing beautifully, but I don't remember what Josh said. :-\

Today, a bunch of TAO (http://www.olytheater.com/) actors and friends read "Poona the F*ckdog."  It went well and most people really enjoyed it.  I don't have any problem with the title or the language but the play itself just doesn't do anything for me.  I didn't find it bad in any way...I just didn't find a lot of it funny.  Some of it was, but not enough of it to think that I would want to do it.

Horseracing. :)
