Re Indian food - I was traveling in London in 1989 with a friend's family, and we discovered how tough it was to get used to the UK version of burgers and such, so we played it safe and had Indian food almost every night.

Before my next trip there (in 1995), we did research and located some reasonably priced places that the guidebooks suggested would be appealing to Americans.

Good morning, all!

I was in bed by 9 last night and slept till 5:15 am, but I refused to get out of bed. I must have dozed back off because it was suddenly 6:30. I decided the time had come to get out of bed. I'm off to Toyland in another 10 minutes or so  and I have a rather long day there.

I'm now at Toyland and it should be quiet here today, which is fine with me. My first goal is to find the copies of the Gavotte parts from the Victor Herbert Concert Orchestra books and enter the violin bowings.

After that, i've got a bunch of notes to write up.

re: the hives on my neck.

I don't know that you'd call them hives. But that was the best description i could come up with (red and sort of like a rash).

No i was not wearing a scarf.

And i don't think i ate anything i haven't eaten a million times.

I did have on my winter jacket that zips up quite high covering my neck. And i did (the day before) wash it with soap because my make-up had left a mark. I wonder if this soap could have irritated my neck?

I can't say for sure which teams will be my favorites. But interestingly i looked at all the teams closely a few days ago. So i already had some opinions.  Teams that i like are similar to the teams i thought i would like. I really like the asain brother/sister team. They seem smart and nice.  I also like the red heads. I don't know why. Not sure yet if they are smart. But there was just something about them ... even from their pics. They are stunning. And i didn't find them at all annoying last night. I really would like to have a fantastic all-women team. One team i hate is the hick husband/wife team. Granted he did amazing in the physical challenge. But they seem so dumb. After doing so well in that physical challenge they let 3 teams pass them because they could not find their way to the pitstop.
The team i am most interested/curious about is the mother and deaf son. I was shocked they ended up first. That is amazing. I just wonder how they will progress. There are so many challenges where teammates are separated. And often they have to communicate with locales. I am just curious if the mom will take any challenge that seems like it will involve talking or asking directions. Or the allowances they will make for this. Will they allow the mom to help? Very curious about this.  I was happy the flight attendants were not eliminated. That was quite surprising. Cool that they made finding the pit stop a bit difficult. Wow that bungee jump looked horrible.dfasjlk dfskljdfsjkl dfsjkllkjfjlkdfjlklkjdfslkjlkjkjljlklkjjklkjlkjll kjlkjkl
I'm not sure what to make about the other dating couple (they didn't show them much). Although the team that came last that woman would not have lasted long. She didn't carry the cheese or walk to the pit stop. Why the heck was he carrying her??? The stuntmen look interesting? How tall are they? At least they are not afraid of any of the scary tasks. the  older husband/wife seem interesting. I like that they are very physically fit and seem well travelled. I don't care about the black sister team. I don't see them going far. I do like the gay father/son team. They seem fun and funny. And OMG watching them roll down the hill was too funny!
All in all great premiere. Although interesting they did not show them driving to the airport.  Or how they chose their flights. dsoiudsfouidfsoiudfoiupdfoiuoiuoiuoiu

Monday morning greetings!  I was up early to see Rob and Mary Linda off to Cincinnati and then went back to sleep on my Cleopatra couch.

I thought that the librarians amongst us might find this (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/16/books/16libr.html?th&emc=th) article interesting...

Thanks for posting this DR DAW!  The job I had before going to work for Dayton Metro Library was as an adjunct instructor in the teacher education department at Miami University.  I taught every prospective teacher, pre-K through high school, an information skills module in which I tried to teach them how to work with a library media specialist like Ms. Rosalia.  Unfortulately, most of them would end up teaching in districts that had cut the LMS position and downsized or eliminated their school libraries.  Didn't stop me from feeling a great sense of mission.  If Miami had been willing to make that a permanent position I'd probably have retired from there instead of from the public library in Dayton.

Well, the stump was ground up in record time--it took the guy a little over an hour to do the job.  I was worried last week that this would not get accomplished at all--when public services came by last week to mark out where the underground lines layed, they marked a blue line across the stump, indicating the water line.  I had to go back and forth on the phone a number of times during the week to find out how deep the line was beneath the ground and that the service valve was out of the way before convincing the stump grinder guy that it would be okay to do his work.  But the job is now done and I have to figure out what to do with the pile of wood chips.  I dont like using this stuff for mulch--it's really not a good quality.  My brother-in-law might come by later today to see if he wants to use it around his swimming pool.

I don't have a busy day, actually. I will be seeing Doubt this afternoon at 1pm with a friend. I've seen the stage production but didn't have much desire to see the film, just because I saw the stage version and liked it so much but my friend is a big MS fan and since I'm not busy I will indulge and see the movie. We will then have an early dinner and I will return home and think about the fact that I have to return to work tomorrow.

That is my day.

Der Brucer has no objections to my keeping some tzatziki in the refridgerator.  It's a great condiment for his sandwiches (and I'm not talking of peanut butter and jelly kind).

Take a container of plain yogurt (non-fat is fine, just don't get a flavored variety), and dump it into a strainer that has been lined with cheesecloth or paper towels and is sitting above a medium sized bowl.  Let as much of the excess liquid drain out as you can.  This can take a couple of hours.  Just let it sit.  Be patient.  This means you, BK.

Dump out the whey, and put the strained yogurt into the bowl.  Peel and seed a small cucumber, grate it on a box grater, and squeeze out as much water from the gratings as you can.  Add that to the yogurt.  Chop two to four cloves of garlic with some salt (from a half to a full teaspoon), mashing it up, and add that to the yogurt as well.  Finally, add a tablespoon of minced mint (or dill), a couple of grindings of fresh pepper, and a tablespoon of red wine vinegar.  mix this all together, pop it into the refridgerator so the flavors can blend, and you've got a great sauce for sandwiches, or to be added to soups, or even make your french fries tastier.

Today my work project will be the original HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL on Blu-ray. (So, it's being shown in 1.78:1 instead of 1.33:1 as it was originally broadcast in 2006). Should look more like a real movie with the widescreen framing, and the sound will be a definite step-up from the way I originally heard it (through TV speakers at my friend John's house one evening.)

If bk does not wish to wait, he could always buy a container of Greek(-style) yogurt - which is already pre-strained.  The thick stuff does cost a few extra pennies - well, maybe nickels and dimes - but it's worth the investment.  Fage (http://www.fageusa.com/)* seems to be the brand carried by most markets, but there are many other brands out there right now.  Just check your grocer's shelves.

*Fage's website has a "cute" opening screen.

bk - I forget: What exactly is it about Indian and Greek foods that you are "afraid" of?  Is it the spicing? The cooking methods? The textures?

For both cuisines, start off with the grilled items.  Greek: pork or chicken souvlaki - which is just cubes of marinated meat that have been skewered and grilled.  -You can get them served in a pita, or with rice.  Grilled lamb is also very traditional in Greek cuisine.

I do have some friends who don't prefer Greek cuisine either, but that's because they don't like feta cheese.  Well, there are lots of Greek dishes out there that don't contain feta cheese. *There's a Greek fast food chain in L.A., Daphne's Greek Cafe (http://www.daphnesgreekcafe.com/).  There's a location in the West Hollywood Gateway - where the "Tar-Gay" is.  It could be a good starter place for you.

There are various kebobs/kabobs in Indian cuisine too which are traditionally cooked in a tandoor oven.  Again, whether it's chicken or lamb, it's usually served with some sort of bread - naan or poori - or with basmati rice.

I loooooove Greek food.  As I mentioned before, DH Jed and I have a Greek place in town that we enjoy, where we ate on Friday before Glorious.  Our all time favorite place is the Greek Cusina in Portland.  We are both fond of all things involving feta, warm pita bread, spanikopita, souvlaki, tzatziki...mmm, all delicious.

Indian food I enjoy some of the basic dishes. I love basmati rice, and I've enjoyed it with a good chicken tikka or a curry thing on top.  As a kid I couldn't stand curry, but I don't mind it now, in small quantities.  I also love the naan bread.

BK, I love both Indian and Greek food, so if you can wait to sample them I will happily take you to both upon my visit to LA in April.

If you can't wait, I recommend finding a good Indian place that serves buffet style for lunch, this way you can sample each item and decide what you like and don't like and then you can go back for more of what you do like. Some Indian food is spicy but not all...Butter Chicken is a good choice...it is more on the sweet side. Some Indian foods will taste totally different then what they look like they will taste...so sample away!

Greek food: Some of my friends think Greek food is bland. I love it. Stuffed grape leaves are very tasty. Again the flavors can vary...some you may love, and some you may not.

Again, I would love to treat you to lunches at both types of restaurants, so don't hate it before I get there!

My favorite team so far is the deaf kid and his mom but it's always hard to go by just the first episode.  I am glad we are rid of the snippy couple (though we lost some eye candy there.)  And I'm not crazy about the hillbillies because they remind me too much of the last hillbilly couple we had.  The blondies are too full of themselves for me to pull for them at this stage.  Other than that, I'm going to wait until the next episode to make any sure judgement calls.

I thought about that but there's so much of it and it's almost as fine as sawdust.  I would be afraid to use it as mulch cause it could wind up choking the ground.  Maybe I'll do a little more research on line to see how long it would take to decompose.

Greek: I really haven't had a lot of Greek food, partly because I found what I did have to be rather ho-hum. Do any DRs know of great Greek restaurants in LA to recommend?

Indian: Well now, that's a different story! I adore Indian food.  I used to frequent a little Indian eatery called Dhaba in Santa Monica--very informal, but very good food. I went often enough to sample different entrees and it was cheap enough that if I didn't like something it wasn't a big deal.

I second what Mike said. Bruce, I'd be happy to help you learn about Indian cuisine. Yes, the buffets are a good way to sample various dishes. Just stay clear of Vindaloo. There are always mild dishes to choose from. Butter Chicken is a big favorite among novices and there's usually a shish kabob that's pretty tame. Different flavors, yes, to be sure, but very good ones.

JMK- If you mean that box 3 or box 5 on the W-2 (social security and Medicare wages) are greater than box 1, then on the 1040, you still report the amount that's in box 1 on the wages line.

I don't know the local rules, but in some states the 125 plan can be an addback on the state return.  State (box 16) wages can often be a different (higher than Federal) number entirely.

What is Butter Chicken?

Most of experiences with Greek and Indian foods have been less than stellar.  I'm not fond of lamb, but I do like Feta Cheese.

A little over an hour!  I admire your endurance.

I'm simply relieved that the process being described wasn't a "euphemism".

I love Greek food.  But, as with all things, some Greek restaurants do it right and some don't.  I love feta cheese on salads and in special dishes.  I love lamb cooked on a spit and shaved for serving in souvlaki.  I never had lamb chops until a few years ago, but I knew "mutton".  Mutton is vomit-inducing (to me).  The lamb chops prepared  at Angela's Restaurant in Alameda are molto delicioso!

I'm quite fond of Indian foods as well.  One of my co-workers is Indian and she's a good cook.  She brings in stuff from time to time. We've yet to find a local restaurant that does Indian food that meets her standards, however.  She knows  some near her home, but that is too far for us to go for a staff luncheon.

I rather enjoyed "Desperate Housewives" last night.  I can understand why others might not, though.  Every story had some ugliness in it....Susan's insane jealousy (and a rather inexplicable ugliness toward her friend, Katherine); Tom's near-insane meltdown that left what will be a lifetime scar on his relationship with his son's; and Gaby's semi-blackmail of Carlos' boss and the insincerity of their relationship with the boss' wife and future baby; and Orson's pathetic hacking of Brie's computer to learn what Andrew's salary is...very disturbing and unsettling.

Still....it opens up quite a nest of future conflict that can lead practically anywhere.

I HATED "Brothers and Sisters".  Hated it,  hated it, hated it.   These people are NUTZ!

I watched "Rome Adventure" last night.  Overall, this film looks wonderful.  The scenery is gorgeous as is Max Steiner's score.  The colors look bright and natural on my TV setup.  I wish there were more of a "tour of Rome" than we got just because my first trip to Rome was 13 years after this film was made and I'd have loved seeing what was considered "touristy" back then.

The story isn't bad, but some of the lines and acting are.

Some of the more intimate scenes were banal.

But I still love the bit with the brass candlestick (!).  I'd call that a candelabra because it held three candles.  But to port it across and Italy and back to the U.S. because it's a mark of "Don Porter's" (Troy Donahue's) "integrity" is gleeful fun for me.

Who else here remembers Don Porter, the actor?  My fondest memories of him are from his stint on "Private Secretary" with Ann Sothern and as Gidget's father on the TV series.

I spent all afternoon with HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL on Blu-ray. I hadn't watched it in several years, and a couple of things jumped out at me. There is much less music and dance in the first one than in the second and third entries. In an effort to top the first, there are more production numbers, and many of the characters get solo moments in the second and third films. In the first, only Vanessa Hutchens gets a real solo. There are only about seven songs in the first one.

But the one thing that all three movies have in common is combining song and dance with athletics, and the productions numbers that do that in all three movies are certainly highlights.

He was a featured guest at one of our Log Cabin National Conventions. Since he graduated from a Portland University, he was destined to have a bizarre future.

The visuals were wonderful on the Blu-ray, but the sound reflected the lower budget of the first film. It's basically a stereo mix with a couple of surround sequences (the basketball game and the final callbacks).

Still, glad now to have all three HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL films on Blu-ray with their widescreen pictures and lossless audio tracks.

Avgolemono (Egg-Lemon Soup)
Spanakopita (Spinach-Feta Pie)
Horiatiki Salata (Village salad - cucumber, onion, tomato, olive, feta)

Lamb - any way

While in a local eatery in Athens I tried my "I'll have what he's having"  (pointing to another diner) ordering technique. The result was a delicious slab of warm-from-the-oven bread and a teaming bowl of curdled goat's mild.

Communication also paid a role while order game in a Berlin establishment -
I thougth I was getting roast stag (venison hart), of course I ended up with roast heart from a deer.

On my first tour in Italy (1973-75), I tried this approach one evening in a favorite ristorante when I opted to try something other than tortellini with meat sauce.  I pointed to what looked like meat loaf at another table and was told it was coniglio.  The waiter recommended it, too, and offered his compliments to  my choice.

It tasted a bit strange.  It had peas and potato pieces mixed into it.  Possibly carrots, too.

It wasn't the best meat loaf I'd ever tasted and thought it must be a cultural thing -- perhaps different spices were used in ground beef in Italy.

As it turns out, it was rabbit (loaf).

And it didn't taste just like chicken.

Back from a long and profitable day at Toyland: all the Act Two final edits are done and the libretto is up-to-date and looking spiffy.

Tonight at 7:30 I'm having dinner with John McGlinn's suster Lorin. It was she who identified the body on Saturday. It must have been unpleasant because the body had been found 3-4 days after his death and the police had to batter down the door to get to it. Lorin tells me that there is a will and the next thing to discover is who may be the executor.

Shades of Leonard Cohen
...
When Leonard Cohen famously turned his back on the music industry in 1994, he retreated to a Zen monastery more than 6,000 feet above sea level on Mt. Baldy, in the San Gabriel Mountains near Claremont McKenna College. The musician took the name Jikan — meaning “the Silent One” — and devoted himself to an ascetic lifestyle and to the study of Rinzai Zen philosophy.

His five years in seclusion left a gaping lacuna in the musician’s eclectic career. Few people know why Cohen, born to a Jewish family in Montreal, ensconced himself in the monastery’s regimen of meditation and reflection. But “Drawing From the Heart,” a new exhibition of Cohen’s art at Claremont McKenna, throws light on that chapter of his life.

With more than 50 prints of Cohen’s paintings and drawings, the show is a broad survey of his work during the last 40 years. Recurring motifs include the female nude and self-portraits of the artist’s wizened face. But there are also cryptic, slyly comic references to his time on Mt. Baldy.

Concurrent with the exhibition is the Southern California premiere of Philip Glass’ song cycle “Book of Longing,” based on Cohen’s 2006 volume of poetry. Glass will perform on keyboard with eight musicians and four singers. (The Feb. 25 through March 1 concerts are at the Garrison Theater, a few blocks from the art show at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum.)

Glass said the idea for the song cycle originated in a long conversation he had at Cohen’s L.A. home. The project was put on hold when Cohen entered the monastery but was revived after the publication of his book. “People don’t read poetry books chronologically, and I wanted to replicate that experience, as if the listener was subjected to random shuffling,” said Glass. The song cycle takes 22 poems and arranges them into thematic chapters dealing with love, Dharma, ballads and Cohen’s biography.
...

A random shuffling of a Glass work - how could you tell?

Have you read Seth Rudetsky's book Broadway Nights?

I really wish he could have just written a non-fiction real account of his life.  But i am curious. Some of the names he uses are real. But most are made up (although they seem like broadway people i recognize like the Weisslers). I was just wondering how many of the stories are true (if you know).

I'm almost done the book. But the fact vs fiction part is confusing me a bit.

DR JMK - Congrats on the new wheels!  Did you do a trade-in? or was this an outright(?) purchase?

We traded in the 1993 Subaru I had inherited when my parents died.  It had been a great little car, but at 16 or so years old it was starting to show its age.

I just "activated" OnStar and now have a car with its own phone number.  Oy.  :)

Most the time I tolerate Greek food.  Once I had great food at a Greek restaurant & now I'm more open to trying it again.

So, does this mean you have headache? knee-ache? back-ache? itchy nose?

My ankle knows something is afoot.  I thought it was just the many walks with Sugar today, but it's little more than that.  Quite livable, though.  (well, I guesss it has to be).  We'll see how tonight goes.

I am having to get back my stick shift mojo again, especially since we're in such a hilly neighborhood.

And, yes, I was completely anal about parking the car away from all others when I just went to the store.  ;)  I was mortified when I came out and saw that some idiot had parked right next to me.  I want to make it through a week or so before I get any door dings.  :)

Good evening.  DH Jed and I have just returned from a lovely meal with our DCF (Dear Cyber Father) Tom.  We ate at a delicious pizza and salad buffet.  The salad bar only had paper plates, which was odd, but we attributed it to a "parents night out" event that seemed to be taking place there, which involved lots of kids and moms and dads running around.  Perhaps they thought paper plates were safest.
DS Toby was on great behavior, thankfully, and a wonderful time was had by all.  We talked and laughed and laughed and talked.  Always wonderful to see Tom.

Now to load the dishwasher and get Toby to bed, then to bed myself.

I think I shall go wireless. I went to Best Buy today to look at printers/scanners since mine seems to not like to work. A clerk offered his assistance and we got to talking about wireless...I asked him if Comcast offered wireless, and he informed me what the internet provider does not provied the wireless but that I just needed to get a wireless router...well who knew?

He showed the contraptions to me and helped me pick one out.

So how many here at HHW use wireless? Was it painless to hook up?

I also gave them 5 of the 10 hockey tickets I got at the fundraiser a couple weeks ago.  The idea of a group going was an ok one, but the idea of a family outting and their kids going with them just seems better.   They told me they had been talking about going, so this is really great.  I still have enough tickets to go enjoy a match or two and we may all go together.

I've been wireless for some time now.  It's a snap to set up, but it gets a little complicated when you add security such as WEP encryption and MAC address filtering.  But don't let that freak you out--once you learn about it, adding security is easy.

I've been using Linksys products for no reason in particular.  I currently have a combo modem/router unit that they don't seem to make anymore.  I think you are safe going with either Linksys or Netgear--just go with whichever is on sale this week at Best Buy.

I'm back from a wonderful dinner with Lorin McGlinn Reiter, who's absolutley fantastic and completely bewildered by the eccentricities of her late brother John, estrangement from and hostility to his three siblings, and his death.  While we were at O'Neal's, Ron and Dona Raines showed up and it was great to introduce her to other acquaintances of her brother who had similar conflicted feelings of anger and ruined friendship. I think she and I consder ourselves great new friends and I look forward to meeting her family. Given the trauman for her of the past days, I think it was quite a lovely time. I really enjoyed myself.

I would suggest it.  I had shocks many times and it didn't hurt the thermostat, but the last time, I reset it, changed the batteries and did all the stuff that was recommended.  The repairman checked everything out and couldn't get the display to work, so...I got a new one.

Cable works great with wireless.  Your cable modem will connect to your router instead of your computer. Your router may have connections on the back where you can plug in your desk top so you won't need a wireless card for the desk top.   You'll love it once you get it set up

She thinks the film is too deep. . .I think it is shallow (c'mon it is a simple soap opera), meticulously directed and absolutely beautiful to watch and listen to.  Although I think I like Maurice Jarre's score better when he re-worked it for A PASSAGE TO INDIA.

Oh!  The DVD Savant altered his review of HOBSON'S CHOICE because of my email to him. . .
Glen originally wrote that Brenda De Banzie was familiar to American audiences through THE PINK PANTHER (and the Gregory Pack flick THE PURPLE PLAIN).
I alerted him that MOST viewers would associate her with Hitchcock's latter THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH.

I may keep my PC hooked up to the cable modem, however. Just as a secondary.

It's always good to have one computer directly connected to your modem/internet connection.

As for a "wireless printer", there are two issues here.  Some printers use Bluetooth so that you can print wirelessly directly from your computer, laptop and/or camera.*  However, with a wireless router you can set up a network that will allow you to print wirelessly.

*My Canon printer does have a Bluetooth option, but I would have to buy a separate Bluetooth "card" (that plugs into the printer) in order to use it, to print wirelessly.  I have my printer hooked into my Apple Airport Extreme (which is a router, and that's how I access my printer wirelessly.

Not to wreak any kind of havoc or anything, but Jarre's score to "A Passage to India" was no more a reworking of his score to "Ryan's Daughter" than was the latter (and last) David Lean film a reworking of the former David Lean film.  There are no repeated themes of any kind from one film to the other.  The sound is uniquely Jarre's, however, and there is no mistaking a score of his when compared to scores of other composers.

If you would like another example of a composer whose scores bear a similarity, listen to John Barry's score to "Out of Africa" and compare it to "Dances With Wolves."  They are far more similar, IMO, than anything Jarre ever wrote for movies, and yet they are quite different from one another, too.

Are the Oscars really this coming Sunday already?   Will there be a big HHW bash?

Do bears, porcupines, o'possums, squirrels, skunks, deer, rabbits and all manner of vermin and fowl poop in the woods?

I enjoyed all my NBC primetime lineup this evening.

"Chuck" was really,  really good.  To comment on DR MAttH's frustrations about the secondary characters in Buy More, I think that as long as Chuck is able to maintain the appearance of a normal life, he will need to remain at Buy More and he will need to interact with his fellow employees there.  I've enjoyed many of the Buy More segments.  I do wonder, though, why Chuck is never seemingly at odds with Big Mike over absences from the store.

"Heroes" was all right.  I think the show is moving in a right direction, but it's too damned slow getting anywhere.  And I'm really hating Claire's makeup.  She seems to apply it in layers and she looks far too hard and crass the way she's been made up to look this year.  She's a pretty girl, and I'm not sure why they're working against that beauty.  I understand that Bryan Fuller, who wrote some of the best shows of its first season -- and who later created "Dead Like Me" and "Pushing Daisies" -- is returning to the show.   I hope it's not too late.

"Medium" -- lots of fun, I think, with Allison having waking visions.  Interesting episode.  I like for Joe to be more involved, and there was "just" enough of the three daughters to maintain a familial balance.
