TOD

My favorite rep houses no longer exist

The Seville opened on March 22 1929 closed in 1984 and left to crumble. It is literally just a shell. The owner let it fall apart .As of 2001 or so, the east wall collapsed. Interior gutted and marquee removed. Heavily braced against further collapse. The Seville used to be a great theater. It not only should films but there were live performances. My father told me in the 40's and 50's that Harry Belafonte, Liberace, Tony Bennett,  Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Johnnie Ray, The Four Aces, Sarah Vaughan, and Connie Francis. performed there. The Sound of Music played there for almost 3 years!! Actually 2 years and 5o weeks.

It was replaced by Half a Sixpence which opened 41 years ago yesterday.  here it is before it fell apart. The whole block is boarded up

The other theater was the Monkland opened March 7 1930 which prior being a rep house it was a twofer. It showed double bills (remember them) whenever a major film finished its first run it would go to the Monkland with a film that didn't do as well at the box office.

I remember I saw the last film to ever play the Monkland. The theater closed never again to be a cinema. It eventually was converted into stores. The last film was Blue Thunder. It closed in 1981 and was gutted in March 1985 to make stores

Here is the Monkland theater as it looks today

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.....I live in Mooresville Indiana.  It takes movies so long to get there that every theater is a revival house.

Actually our movie theatre closed late last year.  So now we have to go 10 miles to Plainfield to see a new movie.  :P

I am back on the PC since I have to work this weekend and will not make the complete changeover until next week.

Thanks for the suggestions, DR JOSE and MR BK.  I did use the "help" function.  They both suggested I use the "eject" button - but helpfully did not include an image of said icon - and no button said "Eject".....after a few searches in help, etc.....I did finally find a button with a little triangle on it at the top right.....voila....the drawer opened.

DR JOSE - I have a tray not a slot....I only have a G4 with OS X Tiger 10.4.....so we shall see.

Re the notes:  Wasn't Tony Curtis a memorable singer of songs in Spartacus?

I wonder if Theodore Bikel's singer of songs in My Side of the Mountain was an homage to Mr. Curtis in Spartacus.
Title: Re: THAI A YELLOW RIBBON ROUND THE OLD OAK TREE
Post by: FJL on February 21, 2009, 04:47:22 AM
Interestingly, and i use the term loosely, I saw both Bikel and Curtis (in different musicals) at the fabled New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark.  The shows were Fiddler on the Roof and Some Like It Hot, respectively.  So does NJPAC count as a "revival house?"  :)

Indeed and in fact, dear friend (and Last-Starfighter-NYMF-presentation-co-star-of-bk) Maureen Silliman was Golde to Theodore Bikel's Tevye the very first time I went to see a show at NJPAC.

Signing on from Toyland, Ron Raines just called me to tell me I was mentioned on WQXR this morning; they're playing McGlinn recordings. I'm not sure when my colleagiue asnd Jonathan Larson Grant winner Curtis Moore ("let America come!") is showing up, so I'm writing up all of my edits and I have to dig around for a missing score. First I have to figure out which number it is I need to hunt for in the storage cartons.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very Happy Birthday Wishes to our DR Matthew !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pardon me while I pull a der Brucer and pull something from the news.

This is from the NYTimes: Reading the Tea Leaves, Snapple Refreshes Itself
 (http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/02/19/reading-the-tea-leaves-snapple-refreshes-itself/)

It seems, that in addition to changing their lable and bottle dimentions, they're changing the formula for their tea, with surprising results:

Quote
Real sugar is replacing the corn syrup. (Sugar vs. corn syrup, by the way, is the difference between Mexican and American Coca-Cola.) In some cases, that has actually resulted in a decrease in calories.

The old ingredient list for Lemon Snapple Iced Tea: “water, high fructose corn syrup, citric acid, tea, natural flavors.” Calories: 200. The new ingredient list: “filtered water, sugar, citric acid, tea, natural flavors.” Calories: 160.

So, the lesson to be learned here that High Fructose Corn Syrup isn't necessarily as good for you as plain old sugar!  No matter what the HFCS ads on television say!

(Der B, of course, had to wonder how much more Snapple is paying for the sugar, as opposed to the HFCS.)

Saturday morning greetings!  The Miami University All-Choir Bicentennial Spectacular was - well - spectacular.  We had 3 numbers each from the Chamber Singers, the Choraliers, the Collegiate Chorale, and the Men's Glee Club, then they combined to do "the loud parts" of Carmina Burana and John Rutter's Gloria.

TOD:

I mentioned yesterday that our local revival theater was The Visulite. Now for the most notable films I saw there.

The local TV stations would never shell out the big bucks to rent MGM movie packages, so I grew up never having seen EASTER PARADE, THE PIRATE, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, ON THE TOWN, MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS or any of those classics. So, whenever there was an MGM double feature, I was there. They'd usually do double features with the same star: Fred Astaire in ROYAL WEDDING and THE BAND WAGON or Gene Kelly in AN AMERICAN IN PARIS and LES GIRLS. So, before I saw them on VHS, I saw many MGM musicals at the Visulite.

I also saw all of the Marx Brothers' MGM movies there in usually triple features but always coupled with A NIGHT AT THE OPERA as the major drawing card. (So I saw it two or three times for only one time for AT THE CIRCUS or GO WEST.) They never got THE BIG STORE, so I only saw it a few years ago for the first time. Amazing!

Thanks for the tip, DR Vixmom.  I think I'll ask for a written prescription from my optometrist's office to have a spare pair made.  This will be a long week, wearing my sunglasses.  Fortunately, they're not too dark and are lighter in the reading portion.  Night driving is out, though.

Congratulations on your good sleep!

Also at the Visulite, I saw a double feature of CABARET and SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. Of course, I had seen CABARET when it first came out, but had never seen SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE (paired due to Michael York).

Another famous pairing: THE BOYS IN THE BAND with THE DAMNED.

Another famous pairing: FELLINI SATYRICON with FELLINI'S ROMA

I forgot to mention that also in yesterday's review copies was a new release of PRIMAL FEAR. I have never bought this on DVD; I only had the laserdisc, so I'm glad to have it to review and glad to add a DVD to my collection. This is the movie in which Edward Norton first came bursting into the "cinema firmament," and he was stunning in this part (earned an Oscar nomination, too). But it didn't come with a press release, so I'm not sure when it's coming out. I'll have to check at Amazon.

My father, towards the end of his life, lived in either that same building or a similar one nearby on San Vicente.  Also in my father's building was character actor John Fiedler.  The buildings (those type of apartments) were very popular in the 70s, all newly-built at that time, and very nice inside.  And they were not cheap - well, compared to today they were cheap, but then they were sort of top of the line, price-wise.

the TOD:

I have to give credit where credit is due since the amazing Richard Raugh ran The Pittsburgh Playhouse Film Repertory for years and years; every night a different film from the classics to the contemporary.   All with the best possible prints available.  OH, the wonders of a truly beautiful home to film, complete with a balcony.   The Playhouse was where I spent a majority of my evenings when it was up and running.
Favorite films seen there for the first time were the uncut STAR!, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (I missed it in first run), LAST TANGO IN PARIS, GIANT, A STAR IS BORN (1954), JEAN DE FLORETTE/MANON OF THE SPRING, taking a staunch Catholic to see ROSEMARY'S BABY (he clutched my arm practically the entire time), IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER, MILDRED PIERCE, NOW, VOYAGER, FANTASIA, FREAKS.

Another neighborhood offered The Guild, which after ending its existence as a first-run house, became a repertory house with weekly features.  My favorite experience there was seeing PSYCHO and THE BIRDS on a double bill. (I remember it well, because that same night was a triple feature for me, I followed the Hitchcock with my first trip to see THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW).

As for the Topic of the Day...

I've mentioned the beloved Byrd Theatre (http://www.byrdtheatre.com/) in Richmond, VA, before.  It's primarily a second-run house, but they regularly show classic movies as well as play host to some of the local film festivals.  I don't think I "discovered" anything new there, but seeing any movie there, more or less, made it a classic and memorable.  It was the perfect place to "re-see" "The Birds", "Casablanca" or even "The Princess Bride".  -They will even run "The Wizard of Oz" with "Dark Side of the Moon" as part of the Midnight Movies series.

And after seeing "The Searchers" for the first time this week at MoMA, I'll definitely be taking better advantage of the free (for members) screenings. -Especially the ones in their Still Moving (http://www.moma.org/exhibitions/film_exhibitions.php?id=2462&ref=calendar#screenings) Series.

I'm up...and now I'm off.  I have to go to work, then go to my sister's for a little bit (maybe for an early dinner) before I usher for the Ed Sullivan-inspired A Really Big Shoe 3 (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/calendar/calendar_detail.asp?event_id=1072)!  "This 3rd Annual Fundraiser will raise money for the homeless kids in our community."

A couple of friends of mine are in this and it should be a lot of fun! ;D

TOD:  The best revival theatre (and one of the few with a loyal and dedicated group) was and still is the Valley Art Theatre in Tempe.  The Valley Art was restored a few years ago, but it is still a teeny place that shows independent films, odd festivals, and revivals (although the ages of the revival movies are not quite as old as they were.  Ah well....).

Most, if not all, of the other movie palaces (as in not not AMC or UA) have been torn down.  Blockbuster and Netflix have pretty much ruined seeing a classic film on the big screen.   Luckily,  I had the interest and got quite an education when it was still possible to attend the screenings

I got caught with egg on my face at Toyland: I got two numbers in the appendix reversed and got hell over it from Jonathan Larson Grant winner Curtis Moore. I got home about 30 minutes ago and all is corrected. I also stopped at the market, got some things for the week and now I'm back to the Happiest Fella in the Napa Valley. I'm very sleepy, so maybe a nap first.

I then watched some episodes of RICK & STEVE. They can be funny, and the lines fly by very quickly so one must really pay attention. The first one had the (long) birth of the baby. The second was a very funny parody of THE WIZARD OF OZ.

Both were thoroughly enjoyable.

I saw that in the theatre when it was released.  Thank God, my Mother treated us like adults when it came to movies and art and literature.(partially, I think so that she wouldn't have to get a child-sitter).  Had we lived in a big city (and not the cowboy town Phoenix was then and still tries to be at times), I know she would have taken me to wonderful plays.  My two other siblings were clueless and bored through all the films we saw that weren't made for less than an adult age group (Disney, Beach party movies, etc.).  However, I took it all in-- "Darling," "Patch of Blue," "Fanny,"  "Miracle Worker," "The Slender Thread," and so many more.  I think I lived all my adult years from about the age of 4 to 24!

Last night I watched the Emmy Awards.....yes THE EMMY AWARDS....the 11th Annual Emmy Awards courtesy of DR MBARNUM.  The writing was just as bad as it is today....the presenters look ridiculous saying the things they are being made to say.

Dinah Shore presented Ann B. Davis with the Best Supporting Actress in a Continuing Role in a Comedy Series Award for The Bob Cummings Show.

Art Carney presented Tom Poston with the Best Supporting Actor in a Variety Series One Hour or More for The Steve Allen Show.

Raymond Burr presented Dennis Weaver with the Best Supporting Actor in a Continuing Role Drama Half Hour for Gunsmoke.

Barbara Hale won for Perry Mason, but I forget who announced it - might have been Dinah Shore again.

I also got many episodes of M SQUAD, many Bollywood movies, a lovely photo I had never seen of Mr Raymond Burr and Miss Allison Hayes AND a great Bollywood calendar!!!

Thanks to DR MBARNUM!!

...I'm also wondering how DR Danise and her house and her DD Sheena are doing.

...And DR DakotaCelt.

...And where for art thou, DR Ron Pulliam?  -I'm guessing he's currently in the midst of an "Interview With A Vampire or "Inside Daily Clover".

DR JOSE that WII sketch was very funny....very funny.  But not funny enough to ever make me tune into SNL again on purpose.

I've noticed that NBC and "SNL" only seem to post the "best" skits on their website.  -There are no full episodes available on NBC.com.  (I haven't checked if they have different offerings on Hulu.com.)

Speaking of the best moments from memorable shows, i love this version of "Turn the Beat Around" as performed by the Brady Bunch.

Hope that link works.  Especially fun is the way the audience applauds the first line of the song as if it's The Brady Bunch's signature song.  :)

I hope no news is good news!

Would DR DAW be more likely to complain if he hurt than to forget to mention he is feeling fine?

DR Dakota hasn't been gone long for her, and she was on Facebook a few days ago.

I hope DR Danise has a minute to stop in before the weekend is up.  If she doesn't I hope it is because she is busy moving into her beautiful newly remodeled home.

Is that the original Brady Bunch?  Who is the lead singer?

I believe that is Geri Reischl, known to this day affectionately as "Fake Jan" since she took over for Eve Plumb in the variety series.  Per the imdb:

I wonder if that was the period when Eve Plumb was making such a splash as a dramatic actress with Dawn: Portrait of a teenage Runaway and its sequel about Dawn's boyfriend Alexander: The Other Side of Dawn.

Per the imdb, Eve Plumb did go back to do The Brady Brides series a few years later.

Could have been.  I seem to remember that Eve Plumb tried to separate herself from her "Jan Brady" persona and all other things "Brady Bunch".  -And wasn't there another "fake Jan" when they had their series in the 80s?

Oy, we just gave Toby and Dylan a little bit of pizza crust, and now Toby's hanging out under the table smiling, as if expecting some more pizza crust to magically come his way.

You're lucky! In our house on pizza night all the tribe sit at patient attention. If one of us dares to eat a piece of crust, the looks would slay Medusa. They know what is theirs!

Another famous pairing:  THE VIKINGS and TRAPEZE.
At the valley Art, I saw "Something for Everyone," and "Fortune and men's Eyes."   Quite an education fo a 16 year old!  Although I was already quite educated in some ways.

I had a pretty good evening of entertainment. I began by watching the remaining episodes of RICK & STEVE. There was one hilarious one set on Mother's Day with the mothers of Rick and Steve having a smackdown about their son's relationship. (Steve's mom is completely homophobic.)

I still think that WIZARD OF OZ episode (#2) was the best one of the season. I was laughing from beginning to end.

RICK & STEVE had a great line-up of guest stars this season, too, doing voice roles. Just look:

Margaret Cho (who's really a regular), Lance Bass, Jennifer Coolidge, Andy Dick, Bruce Vilanch, Coco Peru, George Takei, Laraine Newman, Kimberly Locke, Perez Hilton, Alec Mapa, RuPaul, Robert Gant, Jason Lewis, Tori Spelling, and Mark Hamill.

And I ended my evening early (I had to get back upstairs and finish writing up my work project for the day) by watching Wednesday night's LAW & ORDER. An interesting episode as always, but why they waste time having Sam Waterston supposedly in the race of his life for D.A., I don't know. It's not like they're going to write him out of the show.

I not only dislike them, I loathe and abominate them. They suck all the life out of an organization. People become obsessed with the mission statements and value statments and vision and forget what the f*** they set out to do. It's all about how it sounds on the page (Web or otherwise).

DR Kerry, I had to laugh at your post yesterday about singing to Sugar.  If only people could hear me around the house.   The cats favorites are "I See Kitties" (to the tune of I Feel Pretty) and "If There's a Kitty in the House"  a little ditty I make up as I go along.  Then there's always the "Mommy's Home Tune" and well....I sing to them about everything.

I have done "if your happy and you know it say meow" and Boo does Meow to that one

Part of an article from MSNBC.com

Quote
But lest cloaks and daggers become this year's hot red carpet couture, here are the details about the show that — whether by design, or loose lips — have come to light over the past week:

SONG-AND-DANCE (JACK)MAN: "Hugh (Jackman, the host) is going to come out and say a few things, but he's not going to do a 10-minute monologue ... He's going to be doing a lot of musical stuff, so that will have a different feel to it." — Vilanch, in an interview with The Associated Press.

NEED A MONTAGE: The original song nominees will be presented together in a medley-style performance, rather than sprinkled throughout the show and played in their entirety. — Nominee Peter Gabriel, who announced in a video blog on his Web site that he was declining to perform "Down To Earth" from "WALL-E" to protest the one-minute limit for his part.

I'M WITH THE BAND!: The band will be onstage for at least part of the show, rather than in the orchestra pit. A circular ministage juts into the audience. The set is surrounded by a glittering circle of white lights and crystals, and is flanked by enormous chandeliers. — Seen in renderings released by the firm of architect and first-time Oscars set designer David Rockwell.

NIGHTCLUB JITTERS: "The look of the theater is very different. It's more like the nightclub of your dreams. It's very intimate. ... It's got to be a lot closer." — Jackman, in an AP interview.

NEVERENDING STORY: "The show's got a narrative line this year, so all the awards are grouped around that. The sequence in which they're given is dictated by this narrative." — Vilanch.

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE: Five LED flat-screens will move in and out of the set to help carry out the show's "narrative." The entire sets will change and evolve, "powered by a visual narrative that will unfold through 12 transforming sets throughout the night." — The Rockwell renderings.

PRESENTING ... PRESENTERS! "There are different people doing groups of awards instead of a different set for each one." And at least some of the presenters who'd been lined up have backed out, emboldened by the anonymity they were afforded by the producers. — Vilanch, who didn't name names.

MUSIC, MAKES THE PEOPLE, COME TOGETHER: The original-song medley will have a vibrant, world-music theme driven by nominee "Slumdog Millionaire," and includes a drum line made up of Indian, African, Japanese and Chinese percussionists. The "giant extravaganza" also has a full orchestra and choir. — DJ Ravi Drums, the leader of the drum line for the number.
