Well, you've read the notes, the notes had momentum, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they currently have MOOmentum.
-
And the word of the day is: CONTUMACIOUS!
-
Welcome five GUESTS.
-
I have caught up with yestereday's posts.
And now, at this improbable hour...
WORKIES!
::)
-
what a great topic of the day!
now if i only had something to contribute!

Sure is quiet this morning. Everyone must be off dusting his/her Oscar.

TOD:
The Titanic.
I bought A Night To Remember for 25 cents from the Scholastic Book Club in the 4th grade.....and I have been interested ever since, reading and watching everything that came along. i may even go to the Titanic Museum in Branson and look around.
-
TOD:
The Titanic. My grandmother read A NIGHT TO REMEMBER to me while baby sitting me. It left a lasting impression.
The historicity of The Bible. Many excellent books have been written on the subject.
The birth of "Talking Pictures."

TOD:

GRRRRRRRRRRRR.......I want to ask a question at Amazon.com but it is not related to any of their topics and if I try to send an email I have to include an order number. GRRRRRRR and it isn't about an order.
-
DR JRand58, I have used the Amazon customer service phone option many times very successfully. You type your phone number in a box, and they call you instantly - you are connected to a service rep, no waiting - and no toll charge.

Tuesday morning greetings! I'm having a bit of trouble waking up today, even though I've been up since shortly after 7am. Maybe it's because it's my 4th day of seeing the world "through a glass darkly." Hope my new glasses are ready soon!
-
Good morning, all! I slept poorly last night and decided to sleep as late as I wanted. I've got seven numbers left to do for the Babes, not all of which I will get to today, more of Mr Loesser, and I have to find the missing score for the Moross Suite from THE CARDINAL so I can begin it. It arrived about 3 weeks ago and I set it aside. The question is where that may be.
TOD:
The storming of the Bastille

I've belonged to Classmates.com for about 5 years, and never hear from anyone. And i've never been able to locate anyone, either. This year, instead of the 45th next year, my high school graduating class is having its 44th year reunion and suddenly former classmates are showing up like crazy. It turns out that one of the people I haven't seen in 44 years is living at 86th Street and West End, four blocks from me! I'm having dinner tonight with him and his wife and I'm looking forward to it very much.
Now to find that Moross score.
-
My Irish and English ancestors
-
Found it!

Thanks to DRs Jane, Laura, dan the man, DR jose and Cillaliz for their burn advice.
Btw, i did not try the toothpaste thing. But i was curious. There were a few comments from people who tried it who said it works.
I just did the cold water, cold compress thing. I ended up going to bed with the cold compress. And i took pain medication like it said. And when i woke up the pain was gone. But there is a big red patch (1 inch by 1.5 inches). No blistering.
It was very stupid. And i had oven mitts on. But someone walked behind me when i was opening the oven yesterday. And i only opened it 3/4 of the way. I had a long sleeve shirt on but it was rolled up at the sleeves. :(
I will put some ointment on it today.
And btw, no i don't have any aloe. :(

Tonight is the finale of PRIVILEGED. :(
I know not that many people watch this show. But it is my favorite new show of this year. Very likeable cast. I really hope this gets renewed.
-
DR Jose i just read your ice comments from last night.
I really did not know that ice was supposed to be bad.
The thing was i was just getting ready to eat dinner. So i couldn't keep my arm under the cold water for 15 minutes like i did later.
I never use ice. But like i said yesterday i have this cold compress that you put in the freezer. It gets very cold. I'm not sure if they would consider that ice, since it unfreezes quite quickly. But it helped a lot.
-
I agree with DR MattH. Last night's MEDIUM was very good. And next week's preview looks great too! I love this show!
-
I have been on both sides of meetings like MR BK describes in the notes. Neither side is fun.
DR DAW I saw that phone option.....but I hate talking on the phone.....
-
I am back on my PC today.
-
Good morning!
Still cold. That warming trend they forecast doesn't actually happen until tomorrow, so today is another frigid affair: 17 this morning and only rising into the 40s by mid-afternoon. Much better the rest of the week, though.

On TV Tonight!™
Due to the Presidential address at 9 p.m., tonight's TV sked is in flux. However, here's what's new:
NBC - THE BIGGEST LOSER
CBS - NCIS
ABC - HOMELAND SECURITY USA
FOX - BONES is on, but it's a rerun
CW - PRIVILEGED
FX - NIP/TUCK (Richard Burgi guests)
TNT - LEVERAGE (season finale)

I'll be working on BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA on Blu-ray today. There are a fair number of bonus featurettes on this, so I may not be able to get it all watched this afternoon (depending on how long the featurettes are).

It's 10:44 and we are still on page one? Skammen!

I've been up since six-thirty. I got Mr. Willison's Anya notes, which, as I knew they would be, were way too long. I don't think he'll be thrilled with the cuts I'm asking him to make, but one way or the other he has to make them. He had seven and a half pages of single-spaced Word text - which is almost three pages too many. He's also used to using tiny type in booklets to have more words - I will not do tiny type - people like our booklets because you can actually read them. And since I know exactly the page count that I write when I do the notes, and how that translates to booklet pages, i know exactly how many pages he has to cut. I sent him back a version in which I cut one page and had suggestions as to how to get the other two out (one lift would take care of one and a half of the two pages).
-
I'm going to try and do the long jog about twenty minutes from now.

TOD:
I've always had a strange affinity for the 1930's. It started with my interest in horror movies of that era, then to movies in general and then to the stage. But it goes beyond all that--I love seeing pictures of how people lived their everyday lives back then. While I've never collected it, anything made of Bakelite fascinates me. I enjoy seeing newspapers and magazines from that time, too. I truly believe that I was living during that era.

$3000.00 per day? Hardly worth quitting your job for, is it?
-
Last night DR Jose asked:
DR Dan (the Man) - It sounded like an alternator problem to me. I went through the same thing with each of the three cars I had. And, like yours, they always seemed to die in the midst of traffic instead of just not starting up in the driveway. -Did they also check your distributor cap and fuel injectors?
They probably will--I asked them to give everything a once over, even though I knew that could leave me open for a mugging. But other than changing my the car's various fluids and replacing a signal bulb, they found no additional problems.
(knock wood)

So, DR JRand, did you watch TAR yet? Did anybody?

DR JMK - I bid for that crazy Playhouse 90 pic of Frances and Charles Drake, and got it for the asking price of $9.99!

I didn't see that one--I keep missing stuff on eBay with their "new, improved" search. I have one of her with him--she's standing behind him. Is it that one? Let's trade scans if not.

Ya know, there might be a TV show there--a lawyer in Nigeria who really does have money to give away--but no one will take it!!!
Reality show or sitcom or a dramedy like ALY McBEAL--I haven't decided yet...

I would certainly love to read Walter's full text on the show, but I certainly understand bk's necessity to have booklets that don't strain one's eyesight. I think DR JMK's suggestion is a good one.
-
DR Jennifer I have had burns hurt for days, weeks. I would begin using an antibiotic ointment today. I find aloe ointment bothers my skin so I often avoid products with it.
-
Hmmm...DEAR LOVED ONE (my Nigerian Lawyer idea) might make a good movie. I need to have my people call Queen Latifah's people. If she's not interested, I'll have my people call Mo'Nique's people (though, in that case, we might be back to doing a sitcom again.)

LOL....prolly the same pic, DR JMK.
PM me DR DtM.....I don't need a DVD but thanks.....unless of course somebody nice looking was doing a road block in his undies.

The period I simply cannot comprehend is the Holocaust. I don't understand the hatred, and I certainly don't understand the systematic annihilation of a race of people with (seemingly) no second thoughts about it and certainly no guilt or shame. No matter how many books I read on the period, I can't wrap my mind around how this happened and was allowed to happen.
-
Now I must head downstairs. Because I slept so late this morning (the best night's sleep I've had in weeks), I didn't have time to clean the living room before coming upstairs for my workout and morning internet surf, so I must do that. Then, it's into the kitchen to start preparing meat loaf which will be the main dish in my lunch for today.

DR Matt--I was going to write about the time I had become slightly obsessed with the Holocaust for precisely the reasons you mentioned. It started when I was still in sixth grade with my scanning through Time Magazine's Yearbooks of the late '40s and seeing pictures of mostly German POW camps. But when I saw the TV moive version of QBVII I was stunned and began to read and research more and more about it, trying to discover some kind of answer about this horror for myself. At some point, when I was in my early 20's, I stopped. Today, I almost completely shy away from the subject. I still haven't seen SCHINDLER'S LIST.

So, there I was, doing the long jog, approaching the halfway point (two miles), when what do I hear? Well, I'll tell you what I hear, loud and clear, being shouted from a VW bug - "Hey, fag!" Yes, in the year 2009, in Los Angeles (or Studio City), someone leaned out the window of a VW bug and yelled, "Hey, fag!" Now, perhaps seeing a sixty-one year old Jew in cutoff jeans with great legs stirred something deep inside him that was disturbing and this was his way of combatting it. Or maybe he's just another intolerant teenage asshole with a brain the size of a barbecued almond. Or maybe his parents taught him well. Whatever it is, I found it astonishing, and not in a good way. We think we've come a long way, baby, and yet people prove time and again we have a long way to go. I wish for this person a cataclysmic event in his life that will shake him to his very foundation, so that he perhaps learns what tolerance and good manners mean, and that creating positive energy brings good things and yelling, "Hey, fag" makes the world more of a cesspool than it already is. Yes, a nice, cataclysmic event for that young man is just the ticket.

Other than the German efficiency, I fail to see how the Holocaust differs from any other genocide in history. Are the Nazi's more incomprehensible than todays Palestinian culture that supports suicide bombers? And to the issue of "allowed to happen" just look at the relative ease with which we dismissed Rwanda and are dismissing Darfur and you'll see how convenient it was to turn away from the Holocaust.

I'm still somewhat obsessed about it. Keith is very aware of it when he attempts to do genealogy research. There is so much information missing, and of course the number of people missing is even greater.
My grandmother came from a large family in Vilna. As far as we know all of her siblings were lost during the Holocaust.

DR Jennifer I have had burns hurt for days, weeks. I would begin using an antibiotic ointment today. I find aloe ointment bothers my skin so I often avoid products with it.
Thankfully when i woke up it was not hurting. I have never had a burn hurt for more than an hour.
It is very odd looking. It is a big red square. But it is on the underneath side of my arm (between hand and elbow).
I have antibiotic ointment and a light wrap around it.

Thanks to DR DtM for the TAR update - the mentioned results pleased me. I am not saying I am happy a team left....effort counts for a lot - but I don't MIND that the team that left was the team it was.....

DR JENNIFER I didn't see TAR, but was informed of the results as requested.
I think a trip to the doctor or Immediate Care might be in order for you.

I am shaking my head at MR BK's experience.....imagine such a sentiment being shouted from someone driving a VW BUG!!

Wouldn't be a bad idea to have a doctor look at it, Jennifer, if it's large. My son had a scald burn, and we went to the doctor every other day so he could see it and make sure it didn't get infected.

TAR SPOILER ALERT!!!! TAR SPOILER ALERT!!!! TAR SPOILER ALERT!!!! TAR SPOILER ALERT!!!!
TAR SPOILER ALERT!!!! TAR SPOILER ALERT!!!! TAR SPOILER ALERT!!!! TAR SPOILER ALERT!!!!
It was a fun episode but am I glad that the hillbillies are gone! Too much time has been spent on their dramas and it was more then clear that they would never hack it. The blonds also have to go--jeeze! what a couple of chowderheads! My favorite team is definitely Maggie and Luke. I loved the faces Luke was making during the cake throwing challenge. I also like the older couple, particularly how the wife quickly assessed the paragliding situation and made the decision to hike down the mountain. I felt bad for the winning team because of the crappy prize they got, considering how how quickly and how far ahead they won this race.

Oh indeed. I didn't mean to imply otherwise.
It's just that when it happens, even if you laugh it off at the time, it can leave a lasting unsettled and uncomfortable feeling.
And it doesn't even have to be personal. The other day, after my car accident, while I was waiting for the police to arrive, someone passing by took the trouble to roll down their window and yell, "Pull your f****ing cars off the road!!" Now, I knew enough not to do that, as I needed the scene preserved for the police report and insurance consequences. But that idiot and their actions still rankled me, hours later, almost even more than those of the poor guy who bashed into me.

Thanks for the concern DRs Laura, JRand and Jane but i don't think it's that bad. I guess my other burns have been so minor.
It is a red square (but not that big, maybe 1 inch by 1.5 inches). And it's red. But it doesn't hurt. Not even when i touch it. I don't think it's too serious, definitely 1st degree burn. I'm using the ointment. And i will watch it. But i'm sure it will be fine.

I also was not upset to see that team go. They were really bad at the race. And
that was pretty clear from the first episode. I did feel really bad for the wife when
she got lost. I wonder if they would have been penalized since she got lost and
went down the hill the wrong way. I was really glad her husband did yet yell at
her after that. He actually seemed supportive. But my gosh she did not seem very
bright. I also agree about the flight attendants (blondes). Not crazy about them at
all. Not sure my exact favorites yet. But i am very fond of the red heads (although
they are not my typical team, since they have not shown that much strength so
far). I also like the asian brother/sister team. They are very strong. I am not sure
about the mom and deaf son yet. I like them so far. And i hope they stay for a
longwhile. Because i am very curious to see how they approach challenges where
the son will have to talk to others, especially locals. I am not too crazy about the
black sisters either. They don't seem strong or very interesting. One team i do
like, which they barely showed in ep 1 was the dating team (blonde and cute
guy). They seem really nice and strong.jkldfsjkldfjkldfsjklkjllkjkkfadifp[poipoi iooioiui ioupoipoipoipoipoipoipopo uoiafduoifdsoiudfsoiudfsoiuoiuoiuoiufdsoiudsfaoiu dsoifouoiuoiui

The internment of Americans of Japanese ancestry during World War 2.
For a while when I was in high school, I was too. I wrote a term paper on this subject (got an A) and even reused it in college for my English 101 class...but I only got a B. :P

And since I know exactly the page count that I write when I do the notes, and how that translates to booklet pages, i know exactly how many pages he has to cut. I sent him back a version in which I cut one page and had suggestions as to how to get the other two out (one lift would take care of one and a half of the two pages).
Something you might consider is "additional notes available at Kritzerland.com."
That would be a great idea.

I am sorry you had to experience that, bk.
It brings up disturbing and unhappy memories from grade school all the way through high school for me. :(
I hope you have some very good memories to offset these.
WHY CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG??

LensCrafters is advertising a $99.99 special this week -- exam, lenses and frames!
*But does that include bi-focals? tri-focals? astigmatism? plastic lenses? glass lenses? indexed? non-scratch coatings? non-glare coatings? all frames in the store or just a "special selection"? Does the eye exam also cover contacts or just for glasses?
I always tried to take advantage of some of those specials, however, due to my prescription* and the "size" of my glasses, I was never able to find a pair of frames that would work with the lenses that I required. I need long "temples", and I still remember being told one time that I would not find a proper fitting set of frames among those included in the "special selection". *Thankfully(?), my prescription is just "strong" - and hasn't changed over the past 15 years. No astigmatism or other conditions to worry about - and pay for.

As for the Topic of the Day...
I still remember being fascinated with the whole pioneer, Westward expansion movement when I was in fifth grade. We participated in a semester-long project where we broken into teams, and each team was a "wagon", a family. We "traveled" through the desert, through the mountains, through rain, through snow, etc., and learned what it took to survive in and under each of those conditions. The game would even kill off family members, horses and livestock due to sickness, accidents, even an attack by an animal or other enemy. Circle the wagons!

I watched the season finale of THE CLOSER WHILE I ate lunch. What a fabulous episode to end the season with. The case was merely OK, but everything else surrounding the story was just aces.
-
I spent most of my afternoon on BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA on Blu-ray. I have to admit, I wasn't enthusiastic about this one. After UNDERDOG and SPACE BUDDIES, both of which featured talking dogs, I thought the premise sounded rather tired and silly.
But darned if Disney didn't pull it off. Not high on wit (only a couple of good laughs), but the adventure does get you involved, and the voice cast (Drew Barrymore, George Lopez, Andy Garcia, Edward James Olmos, Michael Urie, others) is excellent and the dogs, especially Popi (played by Lopez) is just precious. Those of you who love dogs will want to see it just for these precious and very talented dogs going through their paces.
Oh, and DR Jane, there is one sequence at a Mexican dog fight, but nothing really happens despite its dark, threatening tone, and it's actually played for a momentary laugh so kids in the auudience wouldn't get too scared at the Doberman who was threatening to tear apart the movie's heroine.
-
I also watched all of the bonus features: deleted scenes, bloopers with dog and human cast members, interviews with the voice cast, behind-the-scenes views on how they worked with the dogs to get them to "act." Some fun stuff, but it does take the magic away to watch these behind the scenes shots. The director's commentary also explains many of the tricks used to piece the film together.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to have a doctor look at it, Jennifer, if it's large. My son had a scald burn, and we went to the doctor every other day so he could see it and make sure it didn't get infected.
I'm sure it will be. The only burn that got infected was also a small one, the reason I didn't bother with the antibiotic ointment. As soon as I saw the red line I rushed over to a walk in clinic.

You could, of course, have a web address included in the booklet, so that anyone interested can read the entire, "un-Bowdlerized" version. I'm amazed more people don't do this sort of thing.
...Hmmm, JMK already suggested this. Great idea, wish I'd come up with it. ;D

Consider yourself lucky, BK. You could have been physically attacked. Anything from a thrown object, a can or bottle, to having a group jump out of the car with malice in mind.
Yeah, sure, Matthew Shepard comes to mind, but he's just the guy who got all the attention. It was going on long before, and is still happening. Exact numbers are not available. Sorry.
My turn was 28 years ago, in the building where I was living. I was jumped by a gang of six or seven, and managed to escape with just a broken nose and an impacted shoulder. Back then, we didn't have the phrase "hate crime" to cover what had happened. It was called a queer bashing, the implication being that it was my own fault somehow, because I wouldn't have been attacked if I weren't queer.
I hid the truth for a while, calling it a mugging. And then I got angry. And then I learned how to turn that anger into a different kind of strength.
Hate is a peculiar thing. What we too often forget is how good it feels, how empowering and superior, to deny those whom we hate their very humanity. And it is a terrifying thing to witness, because how does one stand up to hatred, to something so primal and lacking concern? It is so much easier to simply stand by and let it happen, to not stand up in defiance, because if one stands up to hatred one can become the target of that hatred. Did someone mention the Holocaust?
What was that different kind of strength I mentioned? I like to think of it as compassion. But would I be strong enough to step up and side with those being attacked, if I were to witness it again? I do not know.
I've said before that I avoid using the word "hate" to simply mean "dislike." We have so many other words to define aversion, distaste, or mere boredom. I reserve hate for the fearsome phenomenon that people use to justify their attacks on others.
And I wish, back in Biblical times, someone had included another commandment: Thou Shalt Not Hate.
Bows politely, steps down from soapbox, and quietly walks away.

I've had the most extraordinary day. Someone from my 1970s past has found me on Facebook and has opened a great flood of good memories, whole names and contact e-mail addresses for folks we know in common.
My cup runneth over, so to speak.
It's been a "bit-by-bit" correspondence through the day, each new message opening up another door...for me and for my friend.
I'm really happy about this. I've googled some of these names dozens of times and sought them on Facebook and Classmates.com and Reunion.com. And now a nice bit of paydirt.
I'm totally psyched!

Thanks! Today was insane, I had SOOO much to do at work before leaving and somehow I managed to get most of it done and the rest of it successfully put off until next week. I really can't believe everything fell into place. For the first time in weeks I really feel healthy and great.
I do have one immigration hearing in the morning. I'll go to the court in Omaha for that. (I fly out of Omaha in the afternoon) The judge appears on a video screen from Chicago. So, when I appear via telephone, which I usually do, the government attorney is in the courtroom, the judge is on the video screen and I am on the speakers in the courtroom. It's really pretty bizarre

DR Jennifer I have had burns hurt for days, weeks. I would begin using an antibiotic ointment today. I find aloe ointment bothers my skin so I often avoid products with it.
Thankfully when i woke up it was not hurting. I have never had a burn hurt for more than an hour.

I have antibiotic ointment and a light wrap around it.

Other than the German efficiency, I fail to see how the Holocaust differs from any other genocide in history. Are the Nazi's more incomprehensible than todays Palestinian culture that supports suicide bombers? And to the issue of "allowed to happen" just look at the relative ease with which we dismissed Rwanda and are dismissing Darfur and you'll see how convenient it was to turn away from the Holocaust.
der Brucer
What's this dismissing Darfur? I think we're at a point now where we expect other countries to not let these genocides happen. We're always criticized as trying to be the "policemen of the world" and yet when we go in and try to help (Somalia) they turn on us. There's a lot of racism in Rwanda and Darfur... no one talks about *that* though, since it's not white racists...

I can't say that i loved it. Although i did love the last 45 minutes. I thought the first hour was just okay for me. I wish we could have seen less kids and more of the adults. I loved every part of them as adults. Maybe part of what i didn't like of them as kids is i don't like violence.
But overall i'm glad i saw it. And the technique of telling the story was very interesting!

Keith has discovered a new person in my family tree:
Philo Taylor Farnsworth (August 19, 1906 – March 11, 1971) was an American inventor. He is best known for inventing the first completely electronic television. In particular, he was the first to make a working electronic image pickup device (video camera tube), and the first to demonstrate an all-electronic television system to the public.
In his later life, Farnsworth also invented a small nuclear fusion device known as a fusor.
I believe he is my 6th cousin 3x removed.
This is my consolation prize, Keith was pursuing a link to Jane Austin. Now that would have been something-darn!

Because I enjoyed last night's THE CLOSER so much, I pulled the third season box set off the shelf and watched the very funny "angry bride" episode on disc one. I hadn't watched that one in awhile, and I really enjoyed seeing it again (and laughing through it.)
-
As I was putting THE CLOSER back on the shelf, my eye happened to catch the box for THE JAZZ SINGER. I didn't want to see the movie again tonight, but I did want to watch that documentary on the dawn of sound that was on disc 2, so I watched that. Very enjoyable documentary.
-
Interesting thing about hate, I know so many gay people who have suffered from the hate of others and turn around and do the same thing to Arabs, Muslims, and those who "appear" to be from Mexico. I call them on it, and it makes no difference and it absolutely drives me crazy.
My friend Ron goes livid when he hears people not speaking English.
-
Next, I watched tonight's new NCIS episode. Very easy to detect killer in this episode with a much too obvious clue very early. The Tony inheritance subplot was also very enjoyable.
-
I have been frustrated lately over the fact that FX is the one remaining network I watch regularly that doesn't have a comparable HD broadcast on my cable system. Tonight, after I finished NCIS, I went flipping around the dial and got to the free HD Showcase channel.
And what did my eyes spy but the last three broadcast episodes of DAMAGES and NIP/TUCK buried in that generic sounding channel. So, looks like I'll be able to watch DAMAGES in HD a few days after broadcast on THAT channel rather than recording the SD broadcast. I couldn't be more delighted!
-
Looks like I will have to put my April Los Angeles trip on hold as budgetary cuts in State govt. are in the works, and it looks to be massive.
Our agency may end up being open only 3 days a week and if that happens I won't be able to afford to visit the other side of town let alone to Hollywood.
-
I got another late afternoon UPS delivery. The next Criterion/Eclipse box: TRAVELS WITH HIROSHI SHIMIZU. There are four films in the box, none of which I've ever seen. I'll likely start on the single Kurosawa/Criterion disc tomorrow and then start on this box set after that. The movies themselves aren't very long, but there are four of them.
-
Guess I can head downstairs to bed a little earlier than usual.
Good night!

Philo was a Utahn, I'll have you know, and there is a statue of him in the State Capitol. Someone may even have started a musical about him (as the NYC cognoscenti know, there was a play about him last season, IIRC). ;)

As Jane mentioned, it has been pretty much raining here nonstop. Drip, drip, drip. Oy, oy, oy.

What's this dismissing Darfur? I think we're at a point now where we expect other countries to not let these genocides happen.
Right - just like we did in 1939; the Holocaust was a European problem and should have been solved by Europeans. How does that play out today?
I seems we only take a principled position when it's convenient.

How is he on people who do not speak it with perfect clarity (Penelope Cruz).

PS Don't ever let Ron ride a New York subway.

Well, that was bound to happen.
I guess if Al Gore can invent the Internet, Barack Obama can credit America for inventing the automobile.

I"m just about done packing. I never know what to take when I'm going to these things. I was going to try to just do a carry on, but decided what the heck and am packing a real suitcase so I can take a variety of clothes. I never know what we are going to do and I will be comfortable while I sit in a classroom all day

One thing i will say is that subsidies to the large corporate farms probably killed the family farm. But it's dead and many of the farm houses are long gone. Sort of like shutting the barn door after the cattle are already out.

I had a hard time deciding what to wear because so many of my clothes are way too big. I may have to do some shopping while I'm there...oh no, not that ;)

~~~~~SAFE TRAVEL VIBES TO DR CILLALIZ~~~~~
Thanks.
I really need this trip and am feeling good. Pam, who is room sharing with me has also had a long haul recently including a jury trial with a very difficult client. She is very excited and will be leaving on a jet plane early in the morning. We've shared rooms to cut costs at a lot of meetings, including NYC. We usually go our separate ways most of the time, but this time I'm not on any committees and neither of us really have friends that live there, so we may just spend more time being touristy together. That would be fun. She's a good friend from the lake and I don't see her that often.
-
Well, I believe I'm going to head to the land where the Wussburgers go. Today was sort of a total bust for me. I felt foggy-headed for a good chunk of the day, as well as still a little "bus-sick". I'm feeling much better now, and I think I just need a good night's sleep at the proper time, so...
Goodnight.
On another note, I'm a judge for the Siouxland Film Festival. It's short films and there are two categories, grad students and locals . I'm a judge for the locals. I was told that there were only 4 local entries a week ago and that they weren't sure what to do. Today I was given 2 DVDs and about 30 -40 evaluation sheets to help narrow the field. Yikes!!!
I think I'll watch them on my computer while I'm waiting at the airport etc. I know the small screen won't give me the whole experience, but it will help me weed out some of them and will give me something to do while I'm waiting.
-
I'm signing off too. I've got to get this packing finished and get some sleep. Tomorrow will be a long day and I can't wait for it to get here!!!
-
The day is finally done and I'm not doing any more days like this for a LONG LONG time.
And I do hope we have some hainsies/kimlets show up for a late-night frenzy or three.
Like the world's first operating steam engine - but they thought of it only as a toy - so like the Greeks! If only the Roman engineers had been able to latch onto some of that Greek science!
Both. I always start out as Atticus, but sometimes have to end up as Dirty Harry - one of the authors is very loud and very stubborn and he interrupts and I must say he met his match in me and finally knew it - because every time he interrupted or tried to talk over me I was louder, faster, and more bombastic. It was funny. At one point I called him a human flyswatter.
I'm soooo tired. And I just ate about four of those little bite-sized dark chocolate things from Hershey's - they've been in my freezer since last summer, but I figured they'd be okay.
The library system where I work has to cut $2.5 million out of next year's budget because of the failed levy lid lift (http://www.trlib.org/trlnews09/pr-levy-results-0209.htm). They're going to have a series of meetings with the public to decide what programs/hours, etc., to cut. It won't be pretty. :-\
TRL is committed more than ever to aiding economic development in each community by helping people in their search for jobs, by assisting entrepreneurs to start small businesses, and by doing its part to make communities more attractive to large employers.
Other than the last item. it would seem that the other items are not part of a Public Library's core function - they should be first on the chopping block. (maybe they should be moved to the Community College system).
The meeting will be a waste of time - the folks showing up will be overwhelming those who voted for the levy lid lift and will just be there to argue to save their favorite program(s).
How much would be saved by reducing all library operating hours by one day per week?
How much saved by reducing acquisitions by 25%?
Awake due to restlessness.
My division of the company I work for is being "divested" from the main company. Sold/spun off to become its own company. We've already had major layoffs in each regional office over the past few weeks. We will go from being part of a company with 25,000 employees worldwide to a tiny company of about 120 people. I will be the only person remaining from the small group that I work with, and I will be reporting to a new boss located in Dallas. I met her by phone yesterday. We will have a new and completely different benefits package, and will be moving our office within the next 6 to 9 months. Lots of change! But I do feel fortunate, for now, to still have a job. Oh, yes, I do feel fortunate.
I don't doubt that what you say is true (the "core functions" and preaching to the choir meetings). We had already reduced the acquisitions materials budget by $300,000+ for the 2009 budget. Not every library is open every day...and no library is open on Sunday. Here (http://www.outdoorslc.com/story.php?subaction=showfull&id=1235499820&archive=&start_from=&ucat=5&) is an article in one of the Lewis County newspapers.
Now you know why folks who want voter initiatives to pass go to Political Consulting companies (like the ones I used to work for) to get campaign assistance. Even the best of initiatives need smart campaigns to pass - and one that appears to raise taxes always does! It sounds like you needed Billboards, TV spots, letters-to-the editors, and a direct mailing effort (and some fundraising to pay for it!).
